Stocks of banks in the midwestern states have been suffering price drops. However, the speculation about the negative effect of narrower interest margins seems exaggerated. Earnings for this group should improve in 1994 and 1995, though not at the pace they did in 1992 and 1993. The strength of fundamentals in the industry mean that the issues could appreciate significantly. Small banks are an attractive option for more risky investors.
