Despite the recent success of CdS/Sb2Se3 heterojunction devices, cadmium toxicity, parasitic absorption from the relatively narrow CdS band gap (2.4 eV) and multiple reports of inter‐diffusion at the interface forming Cd(S,Se) and Sb2(S,Se)3 phases, present significant limitations to this device architecture. Among the options for alternative partner layers in antimony chalcogenide solar cells, the wide band gap, non‐toxic titanium dioxide (TiO2) has demonstrated the most promise. It is generally accepted that the anatase phase of the polymorphic TiO2 is preferred, although there is currently an absence of analysis with regard to phase influence on device performance. This work reports approaches to distinguish between TiO2 phases using both surface and bulk characterization methods. A device fabricated with a radio frequency (RF) magnetron sputtered rutile‐TiO2 window layer (FTO/TiO2/Sb2Se3/P3HT/Au) achieved an efficiency of 6.88% and near‐record short–circuit current density (Jsc) of 32.44 mA cm−2, which is comparable to established solution based TiO2 fabrication methods that produced a highly anatase‐TiO2 partner layer and a 6.91% efficiency device. The sputtered method introduces reproducibility challenges via the enhancement of interfacial charge barriers in multi‐phase TiO2 films with a rutile surface and anatase bulk. We demonstrate that the optical absorption of the vacancy-ordered triple perovskite, Cs3Bi2Br9, can be significantly red-shifted by substituting Br with I while maintaining the layered structural topology. We also present evidence that Br ions prefer to occupy the bridging halide position within the layers in order to minimize strain within the lattice that results from the incorporation of the significantly larger iodide anions into the lattice. The temperature-dependence of the band gap of the proposed photovoltaic absorber copper antimony sulphide (CuSbS2) has been studied by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy. The direct gap rises from 1.608 to 1.694 eV between 300 and 4.2 K. Below 200 K an exciton-like feature develops above the absorption edge at 1.82 eV. First-principles calculations evaluate band structure, band symmetries, and dipole selection rules, suggesting distinctly enhanced absorption for certain excitonic optical transitions. Striking consistency is seen between predicted dielectric and absorption spectra and those determined by ellipsometry, which reveal rapidly strengthening absorption passing 105 cm−1 at 2.2 eV. These results suggest beneficial photovoltaic performance due to strong optical absorption arising from unusually strong electron–hole interactions in polycrystalline CuSbS2 material. Efficient modulation of the bandgap of In2O3 will open up a route to improved electronic properties. We demonstrate using ab initio calculations that Tl incorporation into In2O3 reduces the band gap and confirm that narrowing of the gap is observed by X-ray photoemission spectroscopy on ceramic surfaces. Incorporation of Tl does not break the symmetry of the allowed optical transitions, meaning that the doped thin films should retain optical transparency in the visible region, in combination with a lowering of the conduction band effective mass. We propose that Tl-doping may be an efficient way to increase the dopability and carrier mobility of In2O3. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Recent revisions of defect formation energy calculations based on bandgap corrected hybrid functionals have raised concerns about the validity of earlier results based on standard density functionals and about the reliability of the theoretical prediction of electrical properties in semiconductor materials in general. We show here that a close agreement between the two types of functionals can be achieved by determining appropriate values for the electronic and atomic reference energies, thereby mitigating uncertainties associated with the choice of the underlying functional. Lead dioxide has been used for over a century in the lead-acid battery. Many fundamental questions concerning PbO2 remain unanswered, principally: (i) is the bulk material a metal or a semiconductor, and (ii) what is the source of the high levels of conductivity? We calculate the electronic structure and defect physics of PbO2, using a hybrid density functional, and show that it is an n-type semiconductor with a small indirect band gap of ~0.2 eV. The origin of electron carders in the undoped material is found to be oxygen vacancies, which forms a donor state resonant in the conduction band. A dipole-forbidden band gap combined with a large carrier induced Moss-Burstein shift results in a large effective optical band gap. The model is supported by neutron diffraction, which reveals that the oxygen sublattice is only 98.4% occupied, thus confirming oxygen substoichiometry as the electron source. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

ZnSnP2, an absorber material for solar cells, transitions from an ordered chalcopyrite to a disordered sphalerite structure at high temperatures. We investigate the electronic structure of both phases, combining a screened hybrid density functional with the special quasi-random structure method. We predict a bandgap reduction of 0.95 eV between the ordered and fully disordered materials. Experimental reports are consistent with partial disorder. Tuning of the order parameter would lead to a family of ZnSnP2 phases with bandgaps ranging from 0.75 eV to 1.70 eV, thus providing graded solar cell absorbers from a single material system. Abstract: In this study, density functional theory is used to evaluate the electronic structure of the antimony chalcogenide series. Analysis of the electronic density of states and charge density shows that asymmetric density, or ‘lone pairs’, forms on the SbIII cations in the distorted oxide, sulphide and selenide materials. The asymmetric density progressively weakens down the series, due to the increase in energy of valence p states from O to Te, and is absent for Sb2Te3. The fundamental and optical band gaps were calculated and Sb2O3, Sb2S3 and Sb2Se3 have indirect band gaps, while Sb2Te3 was calculated to have a direct band gap at Γ. The band gaps are also seen to reduce from Sb2O3 to Sb2Te3. The optical band gap for Sb2O3 makes it a candidate as a transparent conducting oxide, while Sb2S3 and Sb2Se3 have suitable band gaps for thin film solar cell absorbers. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Bismuth-based solar absorbers have recently garnered attention due to their promise as cheap, nontoxic, and efficient photovoltaics. To date, however, most show poor efficiencies far below those seen in commercial technologies. In this work, we investigate two such promising materials, BiSI and BiSeI, using relativistic first-principles methods with the aim of identifying their suitability for photovoltaic applications. Both compounds show excellent optoelectronic properties with ideal band gaps and strong optical absorption, leading to high predicted device performance. Using defect analysis, we reveal the electronic and structural effects that can lead to the presence of deep trap states, which may help explain the prior poor performance of these materials. Crucially, detailed mapping of the range of experimentally accessible synthesis conditions allows us to provide strategies to avoid the formation of killer defects in the future. The temperature-dependence of the direct band gap and thermal expansion in the metastable anti-ReO3 semiconductor Cu3N are investigated between 4.2 and 300 K by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy and x-ray diffraction. Complementary refractive index spectra are determined by spectroscopic ellipsometry at 300K. A direct gap of 1.68eV is associated with the absorption onset at 300K, which strengthens continuously and reaches a magnitude of 3.5×105cm-1 at 2.7eV, suggesting potential for photovoltaic applications. Notably, the direct gap redshifts by just 24meV between 4.2 and 300K, giving an atypically small band-gap temperature coefficient dEg/dT of -0.082meV/K. Additionally, the band structure, dielectric function, phonon dispersion, linear expansion, and heat capacity are calculated using density functional theory; remarkable similarities between the experimental and calculated refractive index spectra support the accuracy of these calculations, which indicate beneficially low hole effective masses and potential negative thermal expansion below 50K. To assess the lattice expansion contribution to the band-gap temperature-dependence, a quasiharmonic model fit to the observed lattice contraction finds a monotonically decreasing linear expansion (descending past 10-6K-1 below 80K), while estimating the Debye temperature, lattice heat capacity, and Grüneisen parameter. Accounting for lattice and electron-phonon contributions to the observed band-gap evolution suggests average phonon energies that are qualitatively consistent with predicted maxima in the phonon density of states. As band-edge temperature-dependence has significant consequences for device performance, copper nitride should be well suited for applications that require a largely temperature-invariant band gap.
