In order to improve the flame-retardant properties of bamboo scrimber, chitosan (CS) and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) were used as the film-forming substances, and hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) was used as the flame-retardant substance to prepare h-BN flame-retardant coatings, which were coated on the surface of the bamboo scrimber. The effects of the h-BN flame-retardant coatings with different quality concentrations on the flame-retardant properties of the bamboo scrimber, as well as on the morphology of the residual carbon, were investigated using the analytical methods of FTIR, environmental scanning electron microscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, combustion test, and coating adhesion test. The results showed that the h-BN flame-retardant coating could improve the thermal stability of the bamboo scrimber and that the higher the mass concentration, the better the thermal stability of the h-BN. Compared to the control, the time to ignition (TTI) of the 5% h-BN flame-retardant-treated specimens increased by 56%; the peak heat release rate (Pk-HRR), total heat release (THR), and total smoke production (TSP) decreased by 9.92%, 7.54%, and 32.35%, respectively; however, due to the presence of PVA, the peak smoke production rate (Pk-SPR) increased by 17.78%. The 5% h-BN coating had very good adhesion, with an adhesion grade of zero. In conclusion, the h-BN coating could be well-adhered to the surface of the bamboo scrimber, and the 5% h-BN flame-retardant coating had a better flame retardancy compared to other treatments, meaning that it could provide a new strategy for improving the flame-retardant properties of bamboo scrimber for construction use. Bamboo scrimber is acknowledged for its eco-friendly potential as a structural material. Its properties are significantly affected by both its density and resin content, but the effect of resin content on the properties under high density is not yet known. In this study, the microstructure, water resistance, mechanical properties, and thermal stability of bamboo scrimbers with varying resin content at a density of 1.30 g/cm3 were investigated. The results unearthed that phenolic resin assisted in the densification of bamboo cells during hot pressing, and a higher resin content could effectively reduce the cracks in the scrimber. The inherent cellulose I structure remained unaffected, but an increase in resin content led to a noticeable decline in crystallinity. Additionally, an increase in resin content pronouncedly improved the water resistance and dimensional stability of bamboo scrimbers. The water absorption and thickness swelling were as low as 9.67% and 7.62%, respectively. The modulus of rupture (MOR) exhibited a marginal increase with the amount of resin, whereas the compressive strength and short-beam shearing strength first increased and then decreased. Their peak strengths were 327.87 MPa at a resin content of 15 wt.%, and 168.85 MPa and 25.96 MPa at 11 wt.%, respectively. However, phenolic resin accelerated the thermal decomposition of bamboo scrimbers, and more resin worsened the thermal stability. These research outcomes offer a dual advantage, providing both a theoretical foundation and concrete data that can inform the production and practical application of high-density bamboo scrimbers. Bamboo is a fast-growing plant with properties such as low cost, abundant resources, and good carbon sequestration effect. However, the swift growth of bamboo resources generates an immense quantity of processing waste, which is necessary to effectively utilize bamboo processing waste. The leftovers from bamboo processing can be reutilized by fast pyrolysis to prepare renewable bio-oil. In this study, bamboo bio-oil was partially substituted for phenol to synthesize phenolic resin with different substitution rates under the action of an alkaline catalyst, and then to serve as the adhesive to produce bamboo scrimber. Bamboo bundles were impregnated with synthetic bio-oil phenolic resin to create bamboo scrimber, which was subsequently hot-pressed. The research shows that modified phenolic resins with a bio-oil substitution rate of under 30% have good physical and chemical properties, while the free aldehyde content of phenolic resin with 40% bio-oil substitution exceeds the limit value (0.3%) specified in the Chinese National Standard. The thermal stability of phenolic resins was also increased after bio-oil modification, indicated by the movement of the TG curve to higher temperature ranges. It was found that the bamboo scrimber prepared with 20% BPF resin adhesive had the best comprehensive properties of a good mechanical strength, hydrophobicity, and mildew resistance, particularly with an elastic modulus of 9269 MPa and a static bending strength of 143 MPa. The microscopic morphology showed that the BPF resin was well impregnated into the interior of the bamboo bundle and had a compact bonding structure within the bamboo scrimber. The anti-mold performance experiment found that the bio-oil-modified resin increased the anti-mold level of the bamboo scrimber from slightly corrosion-resistant to strong corrosion-resistant. The conclusions obtained from this study have a good reference value for achieving the comprehensive utilization of bamboo, helping to promote the use of all components, reduce the production cost of bamboo scrimber, and improve its mildew resistance performance. Bamboo scrimber is widely used in interior decoration, architecture, and many other fields. However, it has caused huge security risks due to its inherent flammability and easy-to-produce toxic volatiles after combustion. In this work, the bamboo scrimber with superior flame retardant and smoke suppression properties was produced via the coupling of phosphocalcium-aluminum hydrotalcite (PCaAl-LDHs) with bamboo bundles. The results demonstrated that the flame-retardant bamboo scrimber (FRBS) heat release rate (HRR) and total heat release (THR) were, respectively, reduced by 34.46% and 15.86% compared with that of untreated bamboo scrimber. At the same time, the unique multi-layer structure of PCaAl-LDHs effectively slowed down the release rate of flue gas by extending its escape path. Cone calorimetry showed that the total smoke emissions (TSR) and specific extinction area (SEA) of FRBS were, respectively, reduced by 65.97% and 85.96% when the concentration of the flame retardant was 2%, which greatly developed the fire safety of the bamboo scrimber. To improve the flame retardancy of bamboo scrimber, flame-retardant CaAl-PO4-LDHs were synthesized via the coprecipitation method using PO43− as the anion of an intercalated calcium–aluminum hydrotalcite in this work. The fine CaAl-PO4-LDHs were characterized via X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), cold field scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX) and thermogravimetry (TG). Different concentrations (1% and 2%) of CaAl-PO4-LDHs were used as flame retardants for the bamboo scrimber, and the flame retardancy of the bamboo scrimber was characterized via cone calorimetry. The results showed that CaAl-PO4-LDHs with excellent structures were successfully synthesized via the coprecipitation method in 6 h and at 120 °C. Compared with the bamboo scrimber without the flame retardant treatment, the peak heat release rate (HRR) of the bamboo scrimber treated with 1% and 2% concentrations of flame-retardant CaAl-PO4-LDHs decreased by 16.62% and 34.46%, the time taken to reach the exothermic peak was delayed by 103 s and 204 s and the Time to Ignition (TTI) was increased by 30% and 40%, respectively. Furthermore, the residual carbon of the bamboo scrimber did not change significantly, increasing by 0.8% and 2.08%, respectively. CO production decreased by 18.87% and 26.42%, respectively, and CO2 production decreased by 11.11% and 14.46%, respectively. The combined results show that the CaAl-PO4-LDHs synthesized in this work significantly improved the flame retardancy of bamboo scrimber. This work exhibited the great potential of the CaAl-PO4-LDHs, which were successfully synthesized via the coprecipitation method and applied as a flame retardant to improve the fire safety of bamboo scrimber. As a high-strength biomass composite material, the development of bamboo scrimber (BS) was limited by its flammable characteristics. In this study, different immersion orders of ammonium polyphosphate (10 wt%, APP solution) for bamboo bundles were selected in order to evaluate its influence on the interphase behavior, mechanical and combustion properties of BS. The flattened bamboo bundles, phenol-formaldehyde (PF) and APP solution were utilized to fabricate the BSs. The interphase behavior of the treated bamboo bundles was characterized by the contact angle measurement, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) analysis, fluorescence microscope and SEM-EDS measurement. Thermogravimetric analysis, limiting oxygen index (LOI), mechanical properties before and after combustion test were assessed for various BSs. The results showed that significantly increased equilibrium contact angle of PF droplet on the surface of bamboo after immersed in APP solution while the decrement was for APP solution droplet on the surface of bamboo after immersed in PF. Varied intensities of chemical bonds and distribution forms of APP and PF were observed for the treated BSs depending on the immersion orders. These variations have a great effect on the mechanical and combustion properties. No significant decrement of compressive strength and bending strength was observed for APP-treated BSs with different immersion orders compared with the control sample. Higher compressive strength, bending strength, and modulus of elasticity (MOE) were found for the APP-PF-BS with increments of 31.60%, 21.70%, and 29.01%, respectively. Significantly increased thermal stability was observed for bamboo bundles after immersed in APP and PF especially for the temperature over 300 °C. After the combustion test (duration of 40 min), a higher LOI of 35.4, retention rates of mechanical properties of 39.96–78.97%, and lower mass loss of 15.93% were obtained for the PF-APP-BS. Finally, the immersion order of low concentration of APP solution has a great effect on the interphase behavior, mechanical and combustion properties of BSs, which plays a significant role in the optimized fabrication of fire-resistant BSs. • Varied interphase behavior was observed for APP-treated bamboo and BSs. • No obvious decrease of compressive and bending strengths was for APP-treated BSs. • Significantly increased thermal stability was observed for APP-treated bamboo. • Better fire-resistant behavior was obtained for PF-APP-BS with higher LOI and lower mass loss. • Higher retention rates of mechanical properties of 39.96–78.97% were observed for PF-APP-BS.
