The worktops in both chemical and microbiological laboratories are the surfaces most vulnerable to damage and exposure to contamination by indoor pollutants. The rate at which particles are deposited on indoor surfaces is an important parameter to determine human exposure to airborne biological particles. In contrast to what has been established for inorganic pollutants, no limit has been set by law for microbial contamination in indoor air. To our knowledge, a comparative study on the effect of surfaces on the deposition of microbes has not been carried out. An evaluation of the microbial contamination of worktop materials could be of crucial importance, both for safety reasons and for the reliability of tests and experiments that need to be carried out in non-contaminated environments. The aim of this study was to evaluate the overall microbial contamination (fungi, mesophilic and psychrophilic bacteria, staphylococci) on six widely used worktop materials in laboratories (glass, stainless steel, fine porcelain stoneware, post-forming laminate, high-performing laminate and enamel steel) and to correlate it with the characteristics of the surfaces. After cleaning, the kinetics of microbial re-contamination were also evaluated for all surfaces.

Ports and marinas are central nodes in transport network and play a strategic role in coastal development. They receive pollution from land-based sources, marine traffic and port infrastructures on one side and constitute a potential pollution source for the adjacent coastal areas on the other. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effects of organic and inorganic co-contamination on the prokaryotic communities in sediments from three Mediterranean ports. The structure and composition of the bacterial and archaeal communities were assessed by targeted metagenomic analysis of the 16S rRNA gene, and the links of prokaryotic communities with environmental and pollution variables were investigated. The harbors presented pronounced site-specificity in the environmental properties and pollution status. Consistently, the structure of archaeal and bacterial communities in surface sediments exhibited a strong spatial variation among the three investigated ports. On the contrary, a wide overlap in composition of prokaryotic assemblages among sites was found, but local variation in the community composition and loss of prokaryotic diversity was highlighted in a heavily impacted port sector near a shipyard. We provided evidences that organic matter, metals and PAHs as well as temperature and salinity play a strong role in structuring benthic bacterial communities significantly contributing to the understanding of their responses to anthropogenic perturbations in marine coastal areas. Among metals, copper was recognized as strongly associated with the observed changes in bacterial assemblages. Overall, this study provides the first assessment of the effects exerted by multiple organic and inorganic contaminations on benthic prokaryotes in ports over a large spatial scale and designates bacterial community as a candidate tool for the monitoring of the sediment quality status in harbors. Retting is the major limitation to an efficient production of textile hemp fibres. Traditional retting has been carried out by autochthonous bacterial community. Aerobic and anaerobic pectinolytic strains were isolated from hemp or flax sources and characterised. Anaerobic pectinolytic strains had a wide range of acid polygalacturonase (PG) activity, whereas aerobic isolates did not produce any acid PG activity, but only an alkalophylic one, suggesting they could play a minor role in the retting process, except in the early stages. Analysis of 16S rDNA sequences assigned anaerobic strains to theClostridiumgenus and aerobic isolates to theBacillusandPaenibacillusgenus.C. felsineumandC. acetobutylicumwere confirmed as the main anaerobic agents. Nevertheless, a high proportion of anaerobic and aerobic pectinolytic strains was assigned toC. saccharobutylicumandB. pumilus, respectively, both species never being described as involved in water retting. Anaerobic and aerobic strains with high PG activity were selected and characterized. PG activity is well correlated with the strain retting efficiency and improvement of the process was obtained by inoculating the retting water with spores of selected aerobic and anaerobic bacteria. An advisable feature of retting strains is the absence of cellulosolytic activity. An aerobic strain with no cellulosolytic activity was identified. In contrast, all the anaerobic isolates showed cellulosolytic activity. Mutagenesis was ineffective for selection of Cel-Pec+ mutants. Abstract: Bacteria able to produce surface active compounds (SACs) were isolated from hydrocarbon-contaminated environments. The phylogenetic diversity of the isolates was evaluated by 16S rRNA gene analysis. The production of bioemulsifiers and biosurfactants was determined on strains representative of 18 different bacterial genera. Cupriavidus sp. BSNC28C produced extracellular biosurfactants which reduce the surface tension into the culture medium up to 37.1 mN m−1. Sixteen strains, belonging to 11 different genera, released extracellular emulsifiers able to stabilise oil–water emulsions. Among them, the strains Bradyrhizobium sp. BSNC30A and Bosea sp. BSNC5B showed emulsification activities comparable to those of synthetic surfactants. Overall, the novel SAC-producing strains characterised in this work display promising features for the future development of economically efficient industrial-scale biotechnological processes.
