Freeze events govern the distribution and structure of mangrove ecosystems, especially in tropical‐temperate transitional zones. Understanding mangrove responses to freezing is crucial for predicting their poleward expansion under climate change. However, there is a need for field‐based measurements of mangrove freeze resistance and resilience. After an extreme winter storm in December 2022, we measured mangrove post‐freeze damage and recovery (January and November 2023), building on a pre‐freeze baseline assessment conducted in July 2022 across 12 sites along the temperature gradient of Florida's Gulf of Mexico coast (USA). Low‐temperature thresholds for leaf damage to Avicennia germinans, Rhizophora mangle and Laguncularia racemosa were quantified near −6, −4 and − 4°C, respectively. Thresholds for mortality were found to be near −6 to −7°C for A. germinans and −4 to −5°C for R. mangle. A threshold for loss of reproductivity in A. germinans was identified near −6 to −7°C. Resprouting was observed in all three species but limited to just one individual for R. mangle. Surviving A. germinans resprouted vigorously and had the greatest number of resprout branches, which was proportional to leaf damage. Tall A. germinans had a higher resprout percentage than short trees. Strata‐specific differences in freeze damage were most pronounced for R. mangle, with higher damage in tall versus short trees, while no difference was found between A. germinans strata. These results suggest that R. mangle population recovery may depend on the growth of short trees, while A. germinans can recover from all strata. Minimum air temperature was strongly correlated with mangrove height and above‐ground biomass. Projections of future minimum temperature and species‐specific freeze degree days predict warming winters, suggesting further mangrove development and range expansion under climate change. Determining the factors that set species' range limits is of critical importance in an era of rapid climate and biotic change. Mangroves dominate global tropical coastlines, but their subtropical range limits are thought to be mainly constrained by cold air. However, several tropical mangrove range limits are conspicuously warm, arid, and dominated by cold water countercurrents. Despite speculation that the combination of cold water and aridity controls these range limits, investigations of this phenomenon are rare.Here, we conducted an experimental study examining the separate and interactive effects of cold water and aridity on survival, growth, and ecophysiological traits of three mangrove species from the arid, countercurrent range limit in Baja California, Mexico. It is one of the few range edges worldwide where red and white mangroves (Rhizophora mangle and Laguncularia racemosa, respectively), not the putatively stress‐tolerant black mangroves (Avicennia germinans), are the most poleward distributed mangroves, providing further opportunity to examine how mangrove ecophysiological traits affect species‐specific range limits.Black mangroves were surprisingly intolerant of cold water regardless of aridity, with no seedlings surviving in the lowest water temperature (13°C) after 8 months. In contrast, both white and red mangrove seedlings were able to survive at 13°C when humidity was 65% (but not 40%).In cold water and arid conditions, leaf stomatal conductance was consistently lowest for white mangroves, intermediate for red mangroves, and highest for black mangroves, suggesting that white mangroves were the most resistant to transpiration water loss in the arid conditions typical of Baja.Similarly, when exposed to drought after the eight‐month experiment, white mangroves grown in cold water survived longer than red and black mangroves.Synthesis: Ultimately, our results suggest that the species‐specific range limits of mangroves in Baja California reflects their species‐specific adaptations (or lack thereof) to cold water and aridity, with white and red mangroves surprisingly outperforming black mangroves. Further, the difference in our results compared to the same species in other ranges underscores the need to incorporate species and range‐specific traits when conducting distribution modelling to predict the effects of climate change on organism range limits. Mangroves are unique coastal ecosystems, which have many important ecological functions, as they are a reservoir of many marine species well adapted to saline conditions and are fundamental as sites of carbon storage. Although the microbial contribution to nutrient cycling in these ecosystems has been well recognized, there is a lack of information regarding the microbial composition and structure of different ecological types of mangrove forests. In this study, we characterized the microbial community (Bacteria and Archaea) in sediments associated with five ecological types of mangrove forests in a coastal lagoon dominated by Avicennia germinans and Rhizophora mangle, through 16S rRNA-V4 gene sequencing. Overall, Proteobacteria (51%), Chloroflexi (12%), Gemmatimonadetes (5%) and Planctomycetes (6%) were the most abundant bacterial phyla, while Thaumarchaeota (30%), Bathyarchaeota (21%) and Nanoarchaeaeota (18%) were the dominant archaeal phyla. The microbial composition associated with basin mangroves dominated by Avicennia germinans was significantly different from the other ecological types, which becomes relevant for restoration strategies. Predictions of climate-related shifts in species ranges have largely been based on correlative models. Due to limitations of these models, there is a need for more integration of experimental approaches when studying impacts of climate change on species distributions. Here, we used controlled experiments to identify physiological thresholds that control poleward range limits of three species of mangroves found in North America. We found that all three species exhibited a threshold response to extreme cold, but freeze tolerance thresholds varied among species. From these experiments, we developed a climate metric, freeze degree days (FDD), which incorporates both the intensity and the frequency of freezes. When included in distribution models, FDD accurately predicted mangrove presence/absence. Using 28 years of satellite imagery, we linked FDD to observed changes in mangrove abundance in Florida, further exemplifying the importance of extreme cold. We then used downscaled climate projections of FDD to project that these range limits will move northward by 2.2-3.2 km yr(-1) over the next 50 years.

Increases in minimum air temperatures have facilitated transitions of salt marshes to mangroves along coastlines in the southeastern United States. Numerous studies have documented mangrove expansion into salt marshes; however, a present‐day conversion of oyster reefs to mangrove islands has not been documented. Using aerial photographs and high‐resolution satellite imagery, we determined percent cover and number of mangrove patches on oyster reefs in Mosquito Lagoon, FL, USA over 74 years (1943–2017) by digitizing oyster reef and "mangrove on oyster reef" areas. Live oyster reefs present in 1943 were tracked through time and the mangrove area on every reef calculated for seven time periods. There was a 103% increase in mangrove cover on live oyster reefs from 1943 (6.6%) to 2017 (13.4%). Between 1943 and 1984, the cover remained consistent (~7%), while between 1984 and 2017, mangrove cover increased rapidly with a 6% year−1 increase in mangrove area on oyster reefs (198% increase). In 1943, 8.7% of individual reefs had at least one mangrove patch on them; by 2017, 21.8% of reefs did. Site visits found at least one mature Avicennia germinans on each tracked mangrove reef, with large numbers of smaller Rhizophora mangle, suggesting the post‐1984 mangrove increases were the result of increased R. mangle recruitment and survival. Escalation in the coverage and number of mangrove stands on oyster reefs coincided with a period that lacked extreme freeze events. The time since a temperature of ≤−6.6°C (A. germinans mortality threshold) and ≤−4°C (R. mangle mortality threshold) were significantly correlated with the increased ratio of mangrove area:oyster area, total mangrove area, and number of mangrove patches, with greater variation explained by time since ≤ −4°C. Ongoing losses to mangrove forests globally have prompted increased interest in restoration programs that seek to restore vital ecosystem functions and services. In many cases, data on local‐scale environmental tolerances of mangrove species used in reforestation efforts is lacking, and failure of restoration projects has been attributed to incorrect species selection in plantations. Here, we assess the impact of soil salinity on the early establishment success of monospecific red mangrove Rhizophora mangle reforestation projects in the Saloum Delta, Senegal, a region where widespread mangrove restoration efforts are ongoing. At soil salinities >60 ppt, stomatal conductance, photosystem II operating efficiency, and growth of planted R. mangle seedlings were severely reduced. Similarly, after 1–3 years, survival of mangrove seedlings decreased in soil salinities of >60 ppt. In contrast, we recorded naturally occurring black mangrove Avicennia germinans growing in exceptionally hypersaline conditions (90 ppt), representing some of the most saline vegetated ecosystems on Earth. The findings reported herein can be used to inform species choice in reforestation projects and help improve success rates of coastal wetland restoration projects in semiarid regions. Key message: Wood density varies among mangrove tree species and diameter size classes, reflecting ontogenetic strategies influenced by environmental conditions, such as the salinity gradient. Wood density is one of the most widely used parameters for the description of the structure of a plant and its production of biomass/carbon, as well as its strategies of growth and survival in the context of varying environmental conditions. Data were compiled on the wood density of the three mangrove tree species [Rhizophora mangle L., Avicennia germinans (L.) L., and Laguncularia racemosa (L.) C. F. Gaertn.] that predominate on the Ajuruteua Peninsula in Bragança on the Amazon coast of the Brazilian state of Pará, focusing on the stem position and diameter classes. The influence of the salinity gradient on the wood density of A. germinans was analyzed based on the definition of the three zones of salinity defined from the mean salinity values ascertained from the principal tidal channels found on the peninsula. Wood density varied significantly among species, diameter classes, and saline zones, but not in relation to the position on the stem. Our findings indicate that the inter- and intra-specific variation found in the wood density of the mangrove trees is the result of the different levels of salinity found in the study area, mediated by the variation in the growth of the plant in response to desiccation and hypersalinity that occur at higher elevation in the intertidal zone. In addition, the A. germinans trees with the highest wood density were found in the most saline zone, where these mangrove trees present a reduced assimilation of carbon, which affects the spatial distribution of this species, its production of biomass, and carbon storage. The objective of this work was characterize the floristic diversity and the phytosociological structure of the mangrove in the São Francisco River estuary in order to contribute to the conservation of this ecosystem. Thirtyfour sampling sites were selected, according to ongoing structural mosaic in the region ranging from 100 to 400 m between themselves, in a total useful area of 0.7625 ha. The evaluated parameters were: density of live and dead trunks; living and dead Basal Area; Absolute Frequency, Relative Frequency and Importance Value. Three typical mangrove species of the São Francisco estuary were found such as Avicennia germinans (L.) Stearn, Rhizophora mangle L. and Laguncularia racemosa (L.) Gaertn. F. Gaertn. The forest height ranged from 2.88 to 15.63 m, the DBH from 3.95 to 19.74 cm, live basal area from 4.22 to 47.83 m² ha-1 and dead basal area from 0.50 to 59.63 m² ha-1. The living trunks density ranged from 375.00 to 9100.00 trunks ha-1 and dead trunk density from 100-2800 trunks ha-1. The described results in this study demonstrated that the mangrove forests presents a structural variability that may be associated with environmental characteristics (marine erosion) and anthropogenic factors. Crown displacement in trees is an adaptive response driven by neighbours that optimizes space use and reduces competition. But it can also be the result of wind force. Although morphological responses to neighbours have been well studied, the interplay between neighbours and wind in driving crown shape, and the implications for plant interactions remain poorly understood. However, it is crucial to predict such changes in vegetation structure and function under the scope of global change. We test the hypothesis that aboveground interactions are reduced with increasing soil stress and that wind becomes the main driver of crown shape in mangrove forests.We investigated the effect of neighbours and wind intensity and direction on crown displacement of mangrove canopy and below canopy trees along a salinity gradient, and assessed crown asymmetry for three mangrove tree species, as well as the contribution of crown displacement on reducing crown‐projected area overlap and thus neighbourhood competition.Results show that crown displacement of canopy trees is strongly influenced by winds at all salinities. At low salinities, competition for space accounted for 48% of crown displacement away from neighbours, compared to 49% found for the synthetized effects of wind and neighbours. While trees below the canopy displace their crowns away from their neighbours, no response to wind could be detected. This can be due to the wind protection conferred by a dense canopy stand related to bigger crowns that effectively reduce wind drag. At higher salinities, there was a reduction in canopy overlap due to crown displacement, which suggests reduced aboveground plant interactions with increasing soil stress.While neighbourhood avoidance is a fundamental strategy for optimal light foraging, this study shows that wind strength and directionality are main drivers of crown shape with increasing stress and highlights their potential influence in plant interactions and forest structure, pointing to an increased susceptibility of trees to disturbances that should be further studied. Los manglares son los principales reservorios de biomasa aérea (BA) y carbono (C) sobre el suelo entre los ecosistemas marino-costeros tropicales. A partir de datos estructurales de campo y de ecuaciones alométricas publicadas, se estiman los reservorios de BA y C en la vegetación de las cuatro áreas de manglar más extensas del golfo de Urabá. Los manglares del delta del río Atrato mostraron los mayores reservorios de BA y C (165 y 83 t/ha, respectivamente) concentrados en árboles de Rhizophora mangle, al igual que los de la ensenada de Rionegro (115 y 58 t/ha, respectivamente). En el costado suroriental del Golfo, los mayores valores se obtuvieron en los manglares de Puerto César-Punta Coquito (85 y 43 t/ha, respectivamente), y por último los de Turbo (76 y 38 t C/ha, respectivamente), ambos dominados por Avicennia germinans. En Turbo predominaron árboles de R. mangle y Laguncularia racemosa de diámetros < 5 cm, reflejo de la fuerte intervención antrópica y los reservorios de BA y C son menores que los de Puerto César-Punta Coquito, más alejado de la cabecera urbana. Los reservorios de biomasa de los manglares del Golfo se encuentran dentro del rango observado en todo el mundo, pero los del delta del río Atrato se acercan más al límite superior registrado. Los manglares mejor conservados del golfo de Urabá son reservorios importantes de C en la BA. La magnitud del reservorio está inversamente relacionada con la distancia a los dos principales centros poblados.

Colombia has approximately 379,954 hectares of mangrove forests distributed along the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea coasts. Such forests are experiencing the highest annual rate of loss recorded in South America and, in the last three decades, approximately 40,000 hectares have been greatly affected by natural and, especially, human impacts. This study determined, by the use of Landsat multispectral satellite images, the evolution of three mangrove forests located in the Colombian Caribbean Sea: Malloquín, Totumo, and La Virgen swamps. Mangrove forest at Mallorquín Swamp recorded a loss of 15 ha in the period of 1985–2018, associated with alterations in forest hydrology, illegal logging, urban growth, and coastal erosion. Totumo Swamp lost 301 ha in the period 1985–2018 associated with changes in hydrological conditions, illegal logging, and increased agricultural and livestock uses. La Virgen Swamp presented a loss of 31 ha in the period of 2013–2018 that was linked to the construction of a roadway, alterations of hydrological conditions, illegal logging, and soil urbanization, mainly for tourist purposes. Although Colombian legislation has made efforts to protect mangrove ecosystems, human activities are the main cause of mangrove degradation, and thus it is mandatory for the local population to understand the value of the ecosystem services provided by mangroves.

Spectral discrimination of mangrove leaves is the first step in classifying remotely sensed imagery of mangrove forests. The objective of this study was to analyze spectroscopic data on leaves from the upper and lower parts of mangrove canopies to discriminate species and physiognomic types. Leaf samples from the upper and lower parts of the canopies of 3 mangrove species (Avicennia germinans, Laguncularia racemosa, and Rhizophora mangle) in 2 physiognomic types (basin and fringe) were collected during 2 seasons (dry and rainy). Probability distribution and first-derivative plots were generated for every wavelength (450-1,000 nm) detected in all samples. With the plots, optimal wavelengths were selected and subsequently verified with a canonical discriminant analysis. Results indicated that all species in basin mangrove forests showed a unique distinction between the upper and lower leaves during the dry season. By contrast, species in fringe mangrove forests did not show this difference during both seasons. Optimal wavelengths for species discrimination were located between 540-560 nm and 700-720 nm, which correspond to the green and red-edge wavebands, respectively. Future studies using remote sensing data with the aforementioned wavebands can be conducted to discriminate physiognomic mangrove forest types and to increase accuracy in the classification of mangroves at the canopy level on the Pacific coast of Mexico. Pore-water hypersaline conditions are common in semiarid coastlines where freshwater availability is limited. Hence, hydroperiod (or flood regime), contributes to the regular supply of new water enhancing mangrove survival and growth. The purpose of this investigation was to assess pore-water salinity and hydroperiod variability of basin mangrove distribution by installing three underground PVC (polyvinyl chloride) pipes connected to the main tidal channel. All pipes were placed perpendicular to the main channel for an annual cycle. Results indicated hydroperiod enhancement at the location of the underground pipes, compared to control stations. Overall, spring tides and rainy season played a key role in temporal hydroperiod variability. Indeed, the interior structure of the pipes allows rapid and continuous intrusion of new water into the saltpan during flood and ebb currents. After three months, pore-water salinity of 170 in the saltpan area was reduced to 80 at a distance of 2 m from the underground pipes. This study shows the applicability of underground pipes for the efficient removal of hypersaline conditions by enhancing tidal flow for possible recruitment of mangrove propagules in semiarid coastlines. Phytosociological analysis was used to quantify the structure of a disturbed mangrove next to a tidal creek of the Rio Igaraçu, Piauí, northeast Brazil, and comparison was made with a survey made fourteen years earlier. Thirty 10×10 m plots were demarcated in three areas of ten plots each. Height and circumference of trees of circumference at breast height ≥ 15 cm were measured in 285 individuals of Avicennia germinans (L.) L., Laguncularia racemosa (L.) C.F.Gaertn. and Rhizophora mangle L. Height ranged from 1.5−15 m (mean 4.4 m) and diameter from 4.8−28.7 cm (mean 7.2 cm). Avicennia and Laguncularia showed the highest parameter values (importance values 52% and 44%, respectively). Furthest from the creek and subject to less frequent tidal flooding, only Avicennia occurred, shorter (mean height 3.8 m) and fewer (density 130 ind ha−1) than elsewhere. In the central area (density 1240 ind ha−1) Avicennia dominated Laguncularia (importance values 53% vs. 47%). All species occurred nearest the creek (density 1480 ind ha−1, importance values Laguncularia 47%, Avicennia 46%, Rhizophora 7%), and heights and diameters were lower. Changes from a previous study suggest selective logging of larger individuals nearer the creek, especially Rhizophora, favouring regeneration of Laguncularia. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Recent climate warming has led to asynchronous species migrations, with major consequences for ecosystems worldwide. In woody communities, localized microclimates have the potential to create feedback mechanisms that can alter the rate of species range shifts attributed to macroclimate drivers alone. Mangrove encroachment into saltmarsh in many areas is driven by a reduction in freeze events, and this encroachment can further modify local climate, but the subsequent impacts on mangrove seedling dynamics are unknown. We monitored microclimate conditions beneath mangrove canopies and adjacent open saltmarsh at a freeze-sensitive mangrove-saltmarsh ecotone and assessed survival of experimentally transplanted mangrove seedlings. Mangrove canopies buffered night time cooling during the winter, leading to interspecific differences in freeze damage on mangrove seedlings. However, mangrove canopies also altered biotic interactions. Herbivore damage was higher under canopies, leading to greater mangrove seedling mortality beneath canopies relative to saltmarsh. While warming-induced expansion of mangroves can lead to positive microclimate feedbacks, simultaneous fluctuations in biotic drivers can also alter seedling dynamics. Thus, climate change can drive divergent feedback mechanisms through both abiotic and biotic channels, highlighting the importance of vegetation-microclimate interactions as important moderators of climate driven range shifts. Global climate change is driving the expansion of mangroves into salt-marsh habitats around the world, and the ability of mangroves to displace salt marsh is attributable to a combination of factors. Early life history is critical to initial establishment; the mangroves' hydrochorous propagules allow for long-distance dispersal, and plasticity allows for establishment in varying environmental conditions. To examine differences in propagule flotation duration and the influence of light availability on seedling establishment and growth, the growth dynamics of Avicennia germinans (black mangrove) and Rhizophora mangle (red mangrove) seedlings were documented in a manipulative laboratory experiment. Propagules were collected on the Atlantic coast of Florida and were grown under two light levels (sun and shade) after being floated in full-strength seawater for varying lengths of time (0, 1, 2, 3, and 4 weeks). Seedling establishment was best after 1 week of flotation, and seedling productivity decreased the longer the propagule floated. Total biomass (g) and root:shoot ratio were significantly higher in the sun than in the shade for both species, whereas seedlings in the shade were significantly taller, with larger and more nitrogen-rich leaves. Total biomass was shaped by a two-way interaction between light and flotation duration; seedlings grew more in the sun, and growth decreased over time. This study suggests that mangroves will do best after short distance-dispersal events and that the plastic nature of mangrove biomass partitioning is highly advantageous to establishment in the salt marsh because of the varying canopy conditions that seedlings may encounter. O objetivo do estudo foi avaliar a influência de diferentes níveis de sombreamento sobre o desenvolvimento de mudas das espécies arbóreas de mangue Avicennia germinans (L.) Stearn., Rhizophora mangle L. e Laguncularia racemosa (L.) Gaertn. f. O experimento foi conduzido na comunidade de Tamatateua, na península de Ajuruteua, município de Bragança. Para a produção das mudas, os propágulos das espécies arbóreas de mangue foram semeados em embalagens de polietileno (17 x 27 cm), preenchidas com substrato típico de manguezal. As mudas das três espécies foram testadas a pleno sol, 30% e 60% de sombreamento em delineamento experimental inteiramente casualizado em esquema fatorial (3 x 3) x 3 (3 espécies arbóreas e 3 níveis de sombreamento). Após as plantas atingirem a idade de nove meses, retiraram-se amostras de oito mudas por repetição de cada tratamento. As variáveis avaliadas foram: altura da parte aérea, diâmetro do coleto, massa da parte aérea, massa seca do caule, matéria seca das raízes e matéria seca total e índices morfológicos. O crescimento das mudas de R. mangle ocorreu em todos os níveis de luminosidade. As mudas de A. germinans apresentaram maior crescimento a pleno sol e a 30% de sombreamento. Já as mudas de L. racemosa foram tolerantes a 30% e 60% de sombra, mas se desenvolveram melhor a pleno sol.The purpose of this study was to evaluate the influence of different levels of shading on the development of seedlings of three mangrove species (Avicennia germinans (L.) Stearn., Rhizophora mangle L. and Laguncularia racemosa (L.) Gaertn. f.). The experiment was conducted at the community of Tamatateua, Ajuruteua peninsula, Bragança, PA, Brazil. For seedling production, the propagules and seeds of the mangrove species were planted in polyethylene bags (17 x 27 cm), filled with a typical mangrove substrate. The seedlings of the three species were grown under full sun (0), 30% and 60% shading, in a completely randomized design, a 3 x 3 factorial (three species and three shading levels), with eight seedlings per replication. After nine months under shading, plant samples were taken. The variables evaluated were: the shoot/height ratio, stem diameter, shoot dry matter, stem mass, root dry matter, total dry mass matter and morphological indices. Growth of seedlings of R. mangle occurred at all light levels. Seedlings of A. germinans grew faster at full sun and at 30% shading. Whereas, seedlings of L. racemosa were able to grow at 30 and 60% shading, but they also grew faster at full sunlight.

En los bosques de mangle, tanto factores biológicos como físicos, afectan el establecimiento y los estados tempranos de desarrollo de los árboles y determinan la distribución espacial de las especies. Se evaluó la respuesta de la regeneración natural de los manglares del delta del río Turbo y la bahía El Uno a la variabilidad ambiental y climática intra-anual. Se cuantificaron la mortalidad, la sobrevivencia y el reclutamiento de las plántulas de tres especies, estacionalmente durante un año. Avicennia germinans dominó la regeneración natural, Rhizophora mangle presentó la mayor la supervivencia y Laguncularia racemosa la mayor mortalidad. Estos procesos se asociaron principalmente con el aporte de sedimentos aluviales, la disponibilidad de luz, la herbivoría, la distancia al río, a las lagunas internas y a la línea de costa, las cuales explicaron el 43% de la variación en la regeneración. La sedimentación fue la variable más importante para el reclutamiento de A. germinans, mientras la luz fue muy representativa para la supervivencia de R. mangle. Con base en registros históricos de precipitación, caudales y carga de sedimentos, se estableció que en la época con mayor precipitación se presenta un descenso en la supervivencia, y en la época seca se favorece el balance entre el reclutamiento y la mortalidad. Los resultados indicaron que la precipitación, el aporte de sedimentos y la luz desempeñan un papel importante en el proceso de la regeneración de las especies evaluadas.

Avicennia and Rhizophora are globally occurring mangrove genera with different traits that place them in different parts of the intertidal zone. It is generally accepted that the oxidizing capacity of Avicennia roots is larger than that of Rhizophora roots, which initiates more reduced conditions in the soil below the latter genus. We hypothesize that the more reduced conditions beneath Rhizophora stands lead to more active sulfate-reducing microbial communities compared to Avicennia stands. To test this hypothesis, we measured sulfate reduction traits in soil samples collected from neighboring Avicennia germinans and Rhizophora mangle stands at three different locations in southern Florida. The traits measured were sulfate reduction rates in flow-through reactors (FTR’s) containing undisturbed soil layers in the absence and presence of easily degradable carbon compounds, copy numbers of the dsrB gene, which is specific for sulfate-reducing microorganisms, and numbers of sulfate-reducing cells that are able to grow in liquid medium on a mixture of acetate, propionate and lactate as electron donors.At the tidal locations Port of the Islands and South Hutchinson Islands, steady state sulfate reduction rates, dsrB gene copy numbers and numbers of culturable cells were significantly higher at the A. germinans than at the R. mangle stands, although not significantly for the numbers at Port of the Islands. At the non-tidal location North Hutchinson Island, results are mixed with respect to these sulfate reduction traits. At all locations, the fraction of culturable cells were significantly higher at the R. mangle than at the A. germinans stands. The dynamics of the initial sulfate reduction rates implied a more in situ active sulfate reducing community at the intertidal R. mangle stands. It was concluded that in agreement with our hypothesis R. mangle stands accommodate a more active sulfate-reducing community than A. germinans stands, but only at the tidal locations. The differences between R. mangle and A. germinans stands were absent at the non-tidal, impounded location.

A hipótese de que a sazonalidade do regime fluvial e pluvial tenha alguma influência na composição físico-química do sedimento e na constituição química foliar em arbóreas do ecossistema manguezal foi testada nesse estudo. Foi investigada a influência do regime hídrico na constituição físico-química do ecossistema manguezal do rio Mucuri, Bahia, Brazil. O estudo foi realizado nos meses de abril (estação chuvosa) e outubro (estação de estiagem) nos sítios de domínio de Avicennia germinans, Laguncularia racemosa e Rhizophora mangle. Foram avaliadas as propriedades físico-químicas de seus sedimentos e a análise dos nutrientes das folhas. De maneira geral, os resultados foram influenciados pelo regime hídrico. A época de maior aporte de águas fluviais e pluviais foi marcada pelos maiores valores de bases trocáveis, capacidade de troca catiônica, pH, salinidade e dos nutrientes Ca, Fe e Mn nos sedimentos. Por outro lado, maiores valores de K, Mg e Zn ocorreram no período de estiagem. O regime hídrico influenciou, também, a constituição química das folhas. Durante a estiagem, a concentração de Ca, Mg, Zn, Fe e Cu foi maior. Diferenças interespecíficas e variação espacial também foram observadas. As folhas de A. germinans se destacaram pelo acúmulo de nutrientes e R. mangle, pela menor concentração de nutrientes. A região do bosque de bacia se caracterizou pelos maiores valores de matéria orgânica, pH e K. Esses fatores pouco influenciaram na concentração dos nutrientes foliares. A falta de um padrão sazonal claro na geomorfologia, geoquímica e na constituição química das folhas demonstra a complexidade na interpretação de dados em ecossistema costeiro, onde os fatores ambientais interagem de forma sinérgica e antagônica.The hypothesis that the seasonality of rainfall and the river regime have some influence on the physical and chemical sediment and chemical composition of tree leaves of the mangrove ecosystem was tested. In this study, the influence of the hydric regime on the physicochemical characteristics of the Mucuri River mangrove ecosystem, in Bahia, Brazil, was evaluated. The study was carried out during the months of April (rainy season) and October (dry season) in sites that were predominantly comprised of Avicennia germinans, Laguncularia racemosa and Rhizophora mangle. We evaluated the physicochemical properties of the sediments and nutrient leaf composition. Overall, the results were influenced by the hydric regime. The period of higher river levels and rainwater intake was marked by high values of exchangeable bases, cation exchange capacity, pH, salinity and Ca, Fe and Mn in the sediments. In contrast, higher values of K, Mg and Zn occurred during the dry season. The hydric regime also influenced the chemical composition of leaves. During the dry season, the concentrations of Ca, Mg, Zn, Fe and Cu were higher. Spatial variation and interspecific differences were also observed. Leaves of A. germinans showed a higher accumulation of nutrients, while lower concentration of nutrients were observed in R. mangle. The basin forest region (interior of forest) was characterized by high values of organic matter, pH and K. These factors had little influence on the concentration of nutrients in the leaves. The lack of a clear seasonal pattern in geomorphology, geochemistry and in the chemical composition of the leaves shows the complexity of interpreting data of a coastal ecosystem where environmental factors interact synergistically and antagonistically.

A estrutura da vegetação no manguezal do estuário do rio Itabapoana, ES-RJ foi analisada pelo método de parcelas em 13 sítios de estudo. Considerando-se todos os indivíduos >1m dentro das parcelas, a altura média das florestas variou de 4,0 a 10,1m, o DAP (diâmetro à altura do peito) médio de 3,7 a 13,5cm, a área basal viva de 13,5 a 48,3m2.ha-1 e a densidade de troncos de 1.475 a 21.000 troncos.ha-1. No geral, houve maior contribuição em área basal viva na classe de diâmetro >10,0cm (59%). Florestas com melhor desenvolvimento estrutural exibiram dominância de A. germinans (L.) Stearn., enquanto que Laguncularia racemosa (L.) Gaertn. f. foi dominante em florestas menos desenvolvidas. Os resultados mostraram que aspectos abióticos e fatores bióticos contribuem para a diferenciação entre os sítios. Tais diferenças destacam as peculiaridades de cada manguezal e ressaltam a importância de planos de manejo específicos para a manutenção do ecossistema.

We analyzed the structure of 13 sites of mangrove vegetation in the Itabapoana estuary by use of the methodology of permanent plots. Considering all individuals >1m within the plots, the average height of forests ranged from 4.0 to 10.1m, the average DBH (diameter at breast height) ranged from 3.7 to 13.5cm, the basal area of living individuals was 13.5 to 48.3m2.ha-1, and the density of trunks was 1,475 to 21,000 trunks.ha-1. Overall, there was a greater contribution of the live basal area in relation to diameter >10.0cm (59%). Forests with better structural development exhibited a dominance of Avicennia germinans (L.) Stearn, while Laguncularia racemosa (L.) Gaertn. f. was dominant in less-developed forests. Our results showed that environmental features and biotic factors contribute to mangrove differentiation among sites. Such differences highlight the peculiarities of each mangrove and emphasize the need of specific management plans for ecosystem maintenance.

El propósito del presente estudio fue generar información en torno a la posibilidad de estabilizar isletas de dragado mediante la plantación de halófitas, particularmente con la creación de nuevas áreas de manglar. Para esto, fue construido un vivero para producir plantas de Avicennia germinans y Rhizophora mangle, a la vez que se obtuvieron individuos del medio natural para ambas especies. Para su plantación se consideró el intervalo de mareas, áreas de baja energía, salinidad, zonación de cada especie y un diseño experimental de bloques completos al azar. Los resultados indicaron una mayor supervivencia y crecimiento de las plantas de vivero que las extraídas del medio natural. La supervivencia de plantas de A. germinans (78% con contenedor, 72% sin contenedor, 34% medio natural) fue mayor que la de R. mangle (43% con contenedor, 34% sin contenedor, 2% medio natural). De igual manera, el crecimiento en altura de las plantas de A. germinans, tanto de las producidas en vivero (3.2 cm mes-1), como las extraídas del medio natural (1.5 cm mes-1), fue mayor que las de R. mangle (producidas en vivero: 1.4 cm mes-1; extraídas del medio natural: 0.8 cm mes-1). No se presentó colonización natural durante el periodo de estudio, por lo que son recomendables las plantas de vivero para iniciar la forestación de isletas artificiales, considerando las mareas, la zonación natural local, áreas de baja energía y sobre todo, el hidroperiodo.
