The direct measurement of Poisson ratios via the impulse excitation technique (IET) is based on determining the frequency ratio between the resonant frequencies of flexural and torsional vibrations of circular discs. However, the direct measurement of negative Poisson ratios, which occur in auxetic materials, has been impeded until now by the absence of numerical values of Martinček's solution for frequency ratios smaller than 1.35, because the relevant ASTM standards have not considered the possibility of negative Poisson ratios so far. Here we provide this missing link by reconsidering Martinček's solution and presenting the necessary values in the forms of graphs and fit relations from which the Poisson ratio, including negative ones (down to −0.273), can be determined from frequency ratios down to 1.1 for a wide range of specimen aspect ratios (down to 4). Background: Today, energy harvesting is a hot topic in the scientific community because of the scarcity and insufficiency of energy resources. Piezoelectric systems have been proven by many studies to be very efficient in energy harvesting. In addition, an increase in efficiency has been observed by using auxetic materials in piezoelectric systems due to their extraordinary properties. Because of its capability to sustainably provide wireless sensors and portable electronic devices, a worldwide effort is being made to capture energy using the mechanical vibrations of the environment. Purpose: The main purpose was to understand auxetic materials and piezoelectric systems more clearly by making a comprehensive compilation. Methods: This review article investigated an auxetic piezoelectric energy harvester (APEH) system focusing on the structure of auxetic materials along with their behavior and efficiency in the system. Results: As a result of general examinations, it was seen that structures with negative Poisson ratios were much more efficient in energy harvesting in this type of system compared to conventional structures. Conclusion: Due to APEH's advantages such as simplicity, scalability, and high-power production, piezoelectric energy harvesting has gained more popularity than other vibration-based energy harvesting methods. This study models and analyzes magneto-electro-elastic smart nano-sandwich plates with metamaterial auxetic core layers’ thermomechanical vibrational behavior. This study suggests modeling a five-layer smart sandwich plate with an auxetic core layer using high-order shear theory, smart material thermal characteristics, and nonlocal strain gradient theory, which is difficult. This study generates constitutive equations and analyzes thermomechanically vibrated magneto-electro-elastic smart nano-sandwich plates with a metamaterial auxetic core layer. Constitutive equations result from sandwich structure integration using sinusoidal higher-order shear deformation theory, nonlocal integral elasticity, and strain gradient elasticity. The sandwich nano-plate has a meta-featured auxetic core layer, two transition rim layers between the auxetic and smart layers, and two magneto-electro-elastic surface layers at the edges. The auxetic core and transition rim layers use nickel, whereas the surface layers use electro-elastic barium titanate and magnetostrictive cobalt ferrite. Based on the auxetic core, surface layer materials, magnetic and electrical potentials given to the face layers, and nonlocal parameter dimensions, the sandwich nanoplate’s thermomechanical behavior is explored. By changing the auxetic core’s settings, the smart plate's natural vibration frequency and heat resistance may be controlled. By changing the surface smart layer BaTiO3 and CoFe2O4 material ratios and electric and magnetic potentials, the smart sandwich plate’s thermomechanical vibration behavior may be tuned. Auxetic materials exhibit a negative Poisson's ratio, i.e., they become thicker rather than thinner in at least one dimension when strained. Recently, a nematic liquid crystal elastomer (LCE) was shown to be the first synthetic auxetic material at a molecular level. Understanding the mechanism of the auxetic response in LCEs is clearly important, and it has been suggested through detailed Raman scattering studies that it is related to the reduction of uniaxial order and emergence of biaxial order on strain. In this paper, we demonstrate direct observation of the biaxial order in an auxetic LCE under strain. We fabricated ~100 μm thick LCE strips with complementary geometries, exhibiting either planar or homeotropic alignment, in which the auxetic response is seen in the thickness or width of the sample, respectively. Polarized Raman scattering measurements on the planar sample show directly the reduction in the uniaxial order parameters on strain and suggest the emergence of biaxial order to mediate the auxetic response in the sample thickness. The homeotropic sample is studied via conoscopy, allowing direct observation of both the auxetic response in the width of the sample and increasing biaxiality in the LCE as it is strained. We verified that the mechanism of the auxetic response in auxetic LCEs is due to the emergence of the biaxial order and conclude such materials can be added to the small number of biaxial nematic systems that have been observed. Importantly, we also show that the mechanical Frèedericksz transition seen in some LCEs is consistent with a strain-induced transition from an optically positive to an optically negative biaxial system under strain, rather than a director rotation in a uniaxial system. Textile auxetic materials with negative Poisson's ratio (NPR) have potential applications in protective textile, filtration, and energy absorbance. However, cotton core-spun based auxetic textile is rarely investigated. In this study, cotton core-spun (Lycra)-based helical auxetic yarn (HAY) was developed, and the effects of core filament linear density on the auxetic behavior were studied. Core-spun cotton yarns of 8/1 Nec containing core filament (180, 260, and 420 D) were developed. Then, these core-spun yarns were wrapped with 50 D Dyneema filament at 393 twist/m to make the HAY. The diameter, NPR, and tensile strength of HAY were increased with increasing linear density of Lycra filament. Image analysis of HAY containing 420 D Lycra showed 57% diameter increase with the change in axial strain from 0 to 15 mm. The maximum auxetic behavior with NPR of -3.97 and tensile strength of 26.71 cN/tex was observed in 420 D Lycra-based HAY. An analytical model is formulated for 2-D periodic negative honeycomb thicken strut re-entrant lattice structures and a modified rounded corner negative honeycomb structure that shows negative Poisson's ratios (NPR). Analytical modeling is done using Castigliano's second theorem, where each beam is modeled using Timoshenko beam theory, considering bending, stretching, and transverse shearing. Elastic modulus and Poisson's ratio have been formulated for both structures in the form of non-dimensional geometrical characteristics, such as length ratios, angles of re-entrant arms, shear correction factor, and the material's Young's modulus and Poisson's ratios. Numerical simulations conducted in ABAQUS-CAE explicit solver validate the analytical model. The effect of the non-dimensional parameters on the qualities of the developed structure is demonstrated. It is observed that the structures with a low curvature ratio have a high fluctuation of Poisson's ratio and Elastic constant when plotted against the other parameters. The slenderness ratio has little impact on Poisson's ratio but significantly influences elastic modulus. It is shown that various needs can be satisfied by customizing the Poisson's ratios and elastic constant of both forms of lattice construction over an extensive range by carefully choosing the geometrical parameters and material. Featured Application: In this work the anomalous mechanical behavior of uranyl carbonate mineral rutherfordine is unveiled by performing high-quality theoretical solid-state calculations. This study provides a theoretical framework which may be utilized to study the mechanical behavior of all types of solid materials. In the context of Radioactive Nuclear Waste Disposal, this framework provides in a very detailed, safe, and cheap way, of obtaining these properties which may be applied to the study of the main components of the spent nuclear fuel. The mechanical behavior of the uranyl carbonate mineral, rutherfordine, UO2CO3, was studied by means of theoretical solid-state methods based in Density Functional Theory using plane waves and pseudopotentials. The results of the computations reported in this work show that this mineral exhibits the important negative Poisson ratio (NPR) phenomenon. In order to show that this feature is not an artifact associated to the theoretical treatment employed, additional calculations were carried out using very large calculation parameters. These calculations improved the mechanical description of this mineral and confirmed its auxeticity, i.e., it shows NPR values. Rutherfordine is a highly anisotropic material showing a maximum value of the NPR of the order of −0.3 ± 0.1 for applied stresses directed along the X axis, the transverse direction being the Y axis perpendicular to the structural sheets in rutherfordine structure. The underlying reason for this observation is that under the effect of applied positive pressures, the interlayer space between the sheets of rutherfordine vary in the opposite way to the expected behavior; that is, it decreases instead of increasing. Focusing on planar isotropic petal-shaped auxetics, an isogeometric design framework is presented to achieve tunable effective properties. Specifically, the design framework includes (i) a NURBS-based parametric modelling scheme that characterizes petal-shaped auxetics with a small number of design variables; (ii) a systematic consideration of petal form, component widths and base material properties; (iii) a semi-analytical sensitivity analysis method based on material derivatives; and (iv) constraints for effective stiffness and target Poisson ratio. Three cases are considered: Case A with the same component width, Case B with different component widths, and Case C for composite designs with multiple base materials. For each case, a design limit curve is obtained for the effective Poisson ratio over a range of effective stiffness constraints, to give a quick overview on the properties attainable for each design setting. A continuum-based micromechanical model is employed for the prediction of the elasto-plastic behavior of periodic microstructural arrays that can generate negative values of Poisson's ratios. The combined effects of the negative Poisson's ratio generated by the array microstructure and the elastoplastic behavior of the constituents are studied. Metamaterials are synthetic materials designed to have unique properties like negative Poisson ratio (NPR). NPR metamaterials, also known as auxetics, offer significant value in applications that require high energy absorption, e.g., packing materials, medical knee pads, footwear. However, material uncertainty arising out of manufacturing tolerance, inhomogeneity of material properties, and others could lead to significant variations in the response of the metamaterials. Thus, a SIMP based robust topology optimization (RTO) design for the NPR metamaterials under material uncertainty is investigated. The weighted mean and variance of the deterministic objective function is utilized to form a robust objective function. The variation in effective Poisson's ratio with respect to the lower bound goes from 15.40% to 105% with deterministic topology optimization. In contrast, RTO produces more stable designs and shows the variation of only 1.72% to 2.54%. Several parametric studies are used to demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed RTO methodology. • Uncertainty in base material properties is incorporated by considering them as interval variables. • The robust objective function based on SIMP is solved using the FEniCS python interface. • Reliable results are achieved even with a considerable variation in the input material properties. • Implementation of the robust algorithm does not require significant changes to deterministic code. A novel two-dimensional (2D) semiconducting carbon allotrope is proposed by inserting alkyne into tetrahexcarbon. This new carbon allotrope consists of tetra-rings and acetylenic linkages and is called TAL-carbon. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first 2D carbon allotrope composed of sp - sp 2- sp 3 hybridized carbon atoms. Due to its unique puckered structure, TAL-carbon is the fourth 2D carbon material with an intrinsic in-plane negative Poisson ratio (NPR) reported after graphene, penta-graphene, and tetrahexcarbon. Materials with NPR exhibit a wide range of potential applications in biomedicine, aerospace industries, and precision instruments. TAL-carbon has an indirect band gap of 1.614 eV. At room temperature, it exhibits high in-plane electron mobility of up to ~3.5 × 104 cm2V−1s−1, which is 30 times higher than monolayer black phosphorus and two orders of magnitude higher than monolayer MoS 2. The phonon dispersion curves and in-plane elastic constants indicate that TAL-carbon is dynamically and mechanically stable. Its equibiaxial strain limit reaches 13.7%, similar to that of graphene. An ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) simulation demonstrates that TAL-carbon is thermally stable at 300 K and 1000 K. The results show that TAL-carbon is a promising 2D auxetic material for applications in nanomechanics and nanoelectronics. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
