• Effects of heating and cooling thermal shock on thermally induced vibration (TIV) are explored. • Influence of geometric nonlinearity under heating/cooling thermal shock forms is revealed. • The TIV characteristics of sandwich beams with auxetic honeycomb cores are discussed and compared with traditional honeycomb. • The instability conditions of the clamped beam with immovable ends under heating thermal shock are given. The nonlinear thermally induced vibration (TIV) characteristics of sandwich beams with auxetic honeycomb cores under general boundary conditions are studied. Based on first-order shear deformation theory, the dynamic governing equations are obtained through Hamilton principle, in which geometric nonlinearity and temperature dependence are considered. The temperature field along the thickness is calculated by finite element method and nonlinear TIV responses are solved via Newton-Raphson-Newmark method. The effects of temperature dependency, thermal shock forms, geometric nonlinearity, thicknesses of beam and face-sheet, boundaries and honeycomb geometrical parameters are studied. Results show that the reduction of the absolute inclined angle of the auxetic honeycomb can weaken the TIV responses. The influence of geometric nonlinearity on quasi-static and dynamic responses depends on the thermal shock form. Thermal buckling is the necessary condition for the occurrence of the TIV in clamped beams with immovable ends. In this paper, an analytical investigation is presented on the natural frequency analysis of sandwich plate resting on Winkler-Pasternak type elastic foundations in thermal environment. The sandwich plate consists of an auxetic honeycomb core with negative Poisson's ratio, which is assumed to perfectly bond to two carbon nanotube reinforced composite (CNTRC) face sheets to ignore potential interface effects or imperfections in bonding. The material properties of CNTRC are assumed to be temperature dependent. The volume fraction of carbon nanotube (CNT) varies through the thickness dimension according to linear functions with five different distribution patterns of CNT including UD, FG-O, FG-V, FG-Λ and FG-X. The governing equations of motion are derived based on the Reddy's first order shear deformation plate theory and Hamilton's principle, and the expression of the natural frequency is performed via Galerkin method. Artificial neural network (ANN) model is established to accurately predict the natural frequency of the sandwich plate on the basis of 1450 data points collected from analytical results. In this paper, a new design of auxetic honeycomb is proposed for mechanical performance enhancement by combining the arc-shaped wall and the normal double-arrowed auxetic configuration. On basis of Mohr's 2nd theorem and Castigliano 2nd theorem, an analytical model considering strut bending and stretching is developed to modulate the in-plane mechanical properties of the proposed honeycomb with the geometric parameters. Further, an integrated experimental, simulation and theoretical approach is carried out to investigate its elastic properties and Poisson's ratios in a wide range. The comparison shows that the theoretical results are in good agreement with the experimental and simulation results, verifying the established analytical model. The results reveal that both the in-plane modulus and the Poisson's ratio of the proposed auxetic honeycomb are simultaneously improved compared to the typical double-arrowed and the re-entrant hexagonal designs, and show high and diverse dependencies on the geometric parameters. Additionally, the honeycomb features a stiffer modulus and stronger auxeticity along y direction than that along x direction when the arc angle of "bone", θ 1 , not exceeding a "turning point". Due to the negative Poisson's ratio (NPR) effect, auxetic structures such as re-entrant honeycombs show excellent energy absorption and force mitigation capabilities under crushing load. Compared with two-dimensional (2D) auxetic structure, three-dimensional (3D) ones are expected to have better performance, but they are more difficult to fabricate. In this study, a hierarchical fabrication method for metallic 3D re-entrant honeycomb (3D-RH) using traditional manufacturing techniques is proposed. A 3D-RH specimen was crafted and tested under quasi-static crushing condition. The finite element (FE) model was established and verified by the experimental results. The numerical simulation results showed that the friction condition between 3D-RH specimen and loading surfaces has a great influence on the deformation mode of specimen. Moreover, the energy absorption capability of 3D-RH was numerically compared with a similar structure, i.e., the warp and woof periodic auxetic cellular (WWPAC) structure. The results showed that the specific energy absorption (SEA) of 3D-RH is 1.59 times that of WWPAC and the 3D-RH outperformed the latter in lightweight performance. Finally, the blast resistance of 3D-RH sandwich panel was numerically studied. Compared with 2D re-entrant expanded honeycomb (2D-REH) core, 3D-RH core can reduce the maximum deflection of lower face-sheet by 14.6%, and increase SEA by 20.5%, showing better blast resistance. • A hierarchical fabrication method of metallic 3D-RH has been proposed. • The method uses traditional manufacturing techniques to reduce fabrication cost. • The friction coefficient can alter the deformation mode of 3D-RH under crushing. • The energy absorption per unit mass of 3D-RH is greater than that of the WWPAC. • The 3D-RH shows better anti-blast performance than the 2D-REH. An analytical framework has been developed for predicting the equivalent in-plane elastic moduli (longitudinal and transverse Young’s modulus, shear modulus, Poisson’s ratios) of irregular auxetic honeycombs with spatially random variations in cell angles. Employing a bottom up multi-scale based approach, computationally efficient closed-form expressions have been derived in this article. This study also includes development of a highly generalized finite element code capable of accepting number of cells in two perpendicular directions, random structural geometry and material properties of irregular auxetic honeycomb and thereby obtaining five in-plane elastic moduli of the structure. The elastic moduli obtained for different degree of randomness following the analytical formulae have been compared with the results of direct finite element simulations and they are found to be in good agreement corroborating the validity and accuracy of the proposed approach. The transverse Young’s modulus, shear modulus and Poisson’s ratio for loading in transverse direction (effecting the auxetic property) have been found to be highly influenced by the structural irregularity in auxetic honeycombs. Continuous fiber reinforced thermoplastic composite (CFRTPC) auxetic honeycomb structures were fabricated using the 3D printing technology with a specific printing path planning. For comparison, auxetic honeycombs were also fabricated with pure polylactic acid (PLA). In-plane compression tests were conducted, with corresponding damage types explored using Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) images. A printing path-based finite element (FE) method was developed to mimic both small and large deformations of CFRTPC auxetic honeycombs, while analytical model was proposed to predict their effective stiffness and Poisson ratio. Good agreement was achieved among analytical predictions, FE simulation results and experimental measurements. A systematic parametric study was subsequently carried out to quantify the dependence of in-plane mechanical properties on geometrical parameters. Compared with pure PLA structures, the presence of continuous fibers efficiently prohibited crack propagation in the matrix for each ligament of CFRTPC auxetic honeycombs. Adding continuous fibers increased the mass only by 6%, but led to dramatic increase in compressive stiffness and energy absorption by 86.3% and 100% respectively and smaller Poisson ratios. In this paper, not only the effect of cell-wall thickness on the deformation mode of metallic auxetic reentrant honeycomb was firstly studied, but also the negative Poisson's ratio (NPR) effect on the crushing stress was also clarified by the quasi-static compressive experiments. Firstly, two types of typical reentrant hexagonal honeycombs with thin-walled and thick-walled cells were manufactured and compressive tests were carried out to characterize the deformation modes, negative Poisson's ratio distribution and crushing stress. Experiment results showed that the deformation mode of thin-walled honeycomb was quite different from that of thick-walled honeycomb, which has not been found in the existing reported papers. Secondly, a finite element (FE) model of the reentrant honeycomb was established and the FE results were systematically compared with the experimental results. The effects of honeycomb cell's number on the compressive deformation and the crushing stress of the honeycomb were studied. The results showed that once the honeycomb contained more than four cells in both transverse and horizontal directions, both the compressive deformation and the crushing stress were close to the experimental results. Finally, the energy absorption characteristics of reentrant honeycomb during compression were discussed.
