We propose a high‐resolution autostereoscopic display that has a deep viewing zone based on time‐multiplexed directional backlight using a large aperture Fresnel lens. When the distance of a viewer from the display changes, the depth of light source should be changed to avoid stereoscopic crosstalk. By combining a DMD projector with layered PDLC screens, the depth of the light source is electronically changed to follow the viewer's motion, which expands the viewing zone in the depth direction. A high definition aerial stereoscopic display is realized by combining a convex lens and time-division parallax barrier. The proposed system attains a wide stereoscopic viewing zone and little crosstalk without any moving parts. To show an undistorted aerial image in the proposed system, optical distortion by the lens should be corrected, which is realized by real-time optical simulation and texture mapping. Crosstalk and the effect of distortion correction are evaluated with a prototype system. The frame rate of the system is tested under different conditions using different graphic cards. Reduced resolution per view and limited viewing zone are the two main issues of autostereoscopic systems based on parallax barrier. Our previous system managed to deal with both of the two issues by using time-division quadruplexing and furthermore replacing the generated 4-view conventional image pattern with 2-view image pattern, where the same image is observed from two of the four viewpoints. However, lack of refresh rate leads to emergence of stripe-shaped noise, which occurs during blinks and horizontal saccades. In this paper, we introduce parallax barrier employing RGB (Red-Green-Blue) slits, where the RGB components of each image pixel are time-division multiplexed as well as the image resolution is. Our experiments with different color combinations show that a tradeoff exists between crosstalk and stripe noise. We also find that the barrier pattern RGBK (Red-Green-Blue-Black) provides the most balanced performance among all the tested combinations. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

In this paper the authors attain a flat panel autostereoscopic display with time-division multiplexing directional backlight that can be seen by multiple viewers at the same time. The proposed system realizes thin directional backlight system by combining dot-matrix light source, hexagonal convex lens array with delta alignment, and a directional diffuser.
