Abstract

The autonomous vehicle (AV) technology has the potential to significantly improve safety and efficiency of the transportation and logistics industry. Full-scale AV testing is limited by time, space, and cost, while simulation-based testing often lacks the necessary accuracy of AV and environmentalmodeling. In recent years, several initiatives haveemerged to test autonomous software and hardware on scaled vehicles. This systematic literature review provides an overview of the literature surrounding small-scale self-driving cars, summarizing the current autonomous platforms deployed and focusing on the software and hardware developments in this field. The studies published in English-language journals or conference papers that present small-scale testing of self-driving cars were included. Web of Science, Scopus, Springer Link, Wiley, ACM Digital Library, and TRID databases were used for the literature search. The systematic literature search found 38 eligible studies. Research gaps in the reviewed papers were identified to provide guidance for future research. Some key takeaway emerging from thismanuscript are: (i) there is a need to improve themodels and neural network architectures used in autonomous driving systems, as most papers present only preliminary results; (ii) increasing datasets and sharing databases can help in developing more reliable control policies and reducing biasand variance inthe trainingprocess; (iii) small-scaledvehicles to ensure safety is a major benefit, and incorporating data about unsafe driving behaviors and infrastructure problems can improve the accuracy of predictive models. Abstract

International audience; In light of the fast pace of innovations linked to AV technology, the question arises as to the role academic research can play in the overall innovation ecosystem surrounding autonomous vehicles. To explore this question, the authors examined a body of 298 papers presented at the last 5 editions of TRB Annual Meetings (2014 to 2018), and selected using a list of queries related to AV technology (road vehicles only). The review examined the context of the research as well as its contents (including typologies for building blocks of knowledge and for technology readiness levels) and the nature of partnerships involved in the production of knowledge.Main findings are that American contributiors are prominent, followed by contributors from the Netherlands and China. The five more active institutions are four US universities and one Dutch university. As expected, the most productive authors belonged to the most active institutions. Very few contributions from the private sector were identified.Research on the vehicle and on operations still dominate, in most cases involving technologies at the stage of proof of concept. Research on demand is growing but still involves technologies with low levels of maturity. Governance is growing as a research focus (especially as real-life experiments develop) and involves technologies from low and high levels of maturity. National and regional agencies are the major funding partners of AV research.Academic research plays a supporting role in the AV innovation ecosystem, especially with regards to technological and operational developments. More research is needed on demand and governance.

Abstract

Timely and accurate detection and recognition of traffic lights are critical for Autonomous Vehicles (AVs) to avoid crashes due to red light running. This paper integrates a new robust machine learning based solution by combining a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) with computer vision techniques to achieve a real-time traffic light detector. The proposed detection and recognition algorithm is capable of recognizing traffic lights on low-power small-form platforms, which are lightweight, portable, and can be mounted on AVs in daylight scenarios. The LISA open-source dataset is utilized with augmentation methods to increase the accuracy of the solution. The proposed approach achieves 93.42% of accuracy at a speed of 30.01 Frames Per Second (FPS) on an NVIDIA Jetson Xavier platform without using hardware accelerators such as FPGA. This solution is expected to promote the quicker adoption and wider deployment of AVs by increasing the chances of avoiding crashes and ultimately saving lives. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

At present, the topic of automated vehicles is one of the most promising research areas in the field of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS). The use of automated vehicles for public transportation also contributes to reductions in congestion levels and to improvements in traffic flow. Moreover, electrical public autonomous vehicles are environmentally friendly, provide better air quality and contribute to energy conservation. The driverless public transportation systems, which are at present operating in some airports and train stations, are restricted to dedicated roads and exhibit serious trouble dynamically avoiding obstacles in the trajectory. In this paper, an electric autonomous mini-bus is presented. All datasets used in this article were collected during the experiments carried out in the demonstration event of the 2012 IEEE Intelligent Vehicles Symposium that took place in Alcalá de Henares (Spain). The demonstration consisted of a route 725 metres long containing a list of latitude-longitude points (waypoints). The mini-bus was capable of driving autonomously from one waypoint to another using a GPS sensor. Furthermore, the vehicle is provided with a multi-beam Laser Imaging Detection and Ranging (LIDAR) sensor for surrounding reconstruction and obstacle detection. When an obstacle is detected in the planned path, the planned route is modified in order to avoid the obstacle and continue ist way to the end of the mission. On the demonstration day, a total of 196 attendees had the opportunity to get a ride on the vehicles. A total of 28 laps were successfully completed in full autonomous mode in a private circuit located in the National Institute for Aerospace Research (INTA), Spain. In other words, the system completed 20.3 km of driverless navigation and obstacle avoidance.

Abstract

In this paper, we introduce the AAPF* algorithm, an innovative approach that synergistically integrates the A-star search algorithm (A*) with the artificial potential field (APF) method. This algorithm is designed to enhance safety and ensure smoother global path planning for autonomous vehicles, particularly addressing vehicle cornering constraints. Initially, for augmenting the safety of autonomous vehicle, we implement an obstacle expansion strategy with a factor of 2 units, enhancing environmental adaptability. The study then delves into the classical A* algorithm, examining its core principles and characteristics, leading to the development of novel heuristic functions and search strategies that address the limitations inherent in the classic A* algorithm. Subsequently, we explore the APF algorithm, recognized for its excellence in obstacle avoidance in path planning. The paper culminates in the amalgamation of the APF's repulsive field concept with the improved A* algorithm, crafting a comprehensive global planning algorithm tailored for autonomous vehicle path planning schemes. Experiments conducted in a simulated environment model validate the AAPF* algorithm's efficacy in improving both the safety and smoothness, demonstrating its potential for real-world applications. Abstract

This paper proposes an optimal path planning algorithm to make the autonomous vehicle follow the desired path profile while avoiding nearby obstacles safely. Also, it utilizes only readily available sensors equipped with typical autonomous vehicle system. For optimal path planning, an artificial potential field (APF) algorithm to derive both desired vehicle longitudinal velocity and desired vehicle yaw angle in real time is newly designed, which includes both a repulsive field for avoiding road boundaries and nearby obstacles ahead, and an attractive field for following the proper lane. Next, the path tracking control algorithm consists of longitudinal and lateral motion controllers. Especially, a model predictive control (MPC) for vehicle lateral motion causes the yaw angle error between the desired path profile and the vehicle to approach zero. Then, it can derive an optimal front steering angle considering vehicle state and input constraints. Using CarSim and MATLAB/Simulink simulations, the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm in this paper is verified in some driving scenarios. Abstract

There is a growing body of scholarship on the ethics of autonomous vehicles. Yet the ethical discourse has mostly been focusing on the behavior of the vehicle in accident scenarios. This paper offers a different ethical prism: the implications of the autonomous vehicle for human well-being. As such, it contributes to the growing discourse on the wider societal and moral implications of the autonomous vehicle. The paper is premised on the neo-Aristotelian approach which holds that as human beings, our well-being depends on developing and exercising our innate human capacities: to know, understand, love, be sociable, imagine, create and use our bodies and use our willpower. To develop and exercise these capacities, our environments need to provide a range of opportunities which will trigger the development and exercise of the capacities. The main argument advanced in the paper is that one plausible future of the autonomous vehicle—a future of single-rider autonomous vehicles—may effectively reduce the opportunities to develop and exercise our capacities to know, be sociable and use our willpower. Abstract

In this paper, a robust control method is introduced for autonomous vehicle control in different scenarios. Dual controllers have been used in this method to ensure high performance and low errors during the vehicle’s trip. The new control system is called Model Predictive and Stanley based controller (MPS), which is an integration of a model predictive controller and a Stanley controller. Each of these two controllers has its drawbacks and weaknesses. The proposed method tries to overcome these points and come up with a high-performance control system. This hybrid way of combining two of the famous controllers has the benefit of using the best part of each one and trying to enhance the other part. The MPS is tested for both path-following and vehicle control in different scenarios and on both straight and curved roads. This controller has shown high performance and flexibility to deal with different scenarios of autonomous driving.
