Passenger car equivalency ( PCE ) of heavy trucks is often studied using filed observation and microscopic simulation models, especially for signalized intersections. While the Highway Capacity Manual recommends a single value regardless of the percentage of those heavy vehicles, literatures have shown that this equivalency is affected by different factors, including the trucks percentage. This research aims to examine the PCE under different level of traffic and heavy trucks demands. First, field measurements were collected and used to examine the characteristics of heavy vehicle and passenger car headways in oversaturated interrupted flow conditions. Field observations were then used to calibrate a microscopic simulation model. The model was then used to evaluate impact on headways of different levels of congestion and heavy vehicle percentages. Field results show that truck headways are about 2.3 those of passenger cars. The results also show that trucks are 1.5 more likely to be first in a queue when compared to passenger cars and 1.7 times more likely to be in first four vehicles in a standing queue. Passenger cars immediately behind trucks had longer than average headway. The simulation results suggest that PCE increases nonlinearly with increase in congestion level and with percentage of trucks; P C E ' s increase becomes less marked once sever congestion (stop-and-go with increasing queue lengths) conditions set in.

Although there have been assorted car-following (CF) models for connected vehicles (CVs), studying their impacts in mixed traffic flow of human-driven vehicles (HVs) and CVs remains a challenge. Considering the multiple front vehicles' optimal speed changes with memory, this study proposed a new CF model (MVCM model) implemented through vehicle-to-everything (V2X) technology in CVs environment in terms of OVCM (Optimal Velocity Changes with Driving Memory) model. The stability condition of MVCM model was derived through linear stability analysis. Then, the disturbance propagation of MVCM model was compared with that of both classical FVD (Full Velocity Difference) model and MHOVA (Multiple Headway Optimal Velocity and Acceleration) model. Finally, a case study was conducted in VISSIM to analyze the impact of CV (with MVCM model) rates on traffic characteristics, including the average speed, delay time and travel time. Results show that 1) considering more front vehicles' optimal speed strengthens the stability of traffic flow and the optimal considered vehicle number is 4; 2) MVCM model shows better resistance to disturbance than FVD model; 3) and obtain the same stability with MHOVA model, but with fewer front vehicles considered (only 3); 4) larger rate of CVs leads to higher average speed, smaller average travel time and the delay time of CVs and HVs; and 5) CVs' positive effects reaches stable when CV rate approaches 0.6.

In vehicular networks, the instantaneous connectivity between any two consecutive vehicles is a function of both the headway distance between them and the communication channel characteristics. We derive a generalized analytic expression for vehicle-to-vehicle link connectivity probability in highway vehicular networks that considers the change in vehicle headway distribution under different traffic conditions. The introduced formulation is derived under the Nakagami-m small-scale fading model which captures a wide range of small-scale fading conditions in freeway vehicular networks and was shown to well fit the empirical data. This formulation is of interest in analyzing and simulating vehicular communication systems.

This study proposes an exact model for timetable recovery after disturbances in the context of high-frequency public transport services. The objective of our model is the minimization of the deviation between the actual headway and the respective planned value. The resulting mathematical program for the rescheduling problem is nonlinear and non-smooth; thus, it cannot be solved to optimality. To rectify this, we reformulate the model using slack variables. The reformulated model can be solved to global optimality in real-time with quadratic programming. We apply the model to real data from the red metro line in Washington D.C. in a series of experiments. In our experiments, we investigate how many upstream trips should be rescheduled to respond to a service disturbance. Our findings demonstrate an improvement potential of service regularity of up to 30% if we reschedule the five upstream trips of a disturbed train.

This paper proposes an onboard advance warning system based on a probabilistic prediction model that advises vehicles on when to change lanes for an upcoming lane drop. Using several traffic- and driver-related parameters such as the distribution of inter-vehicle headway distances, the prediction model calculates the likelihood of utilizing one or multiple lane changes to successfully reach a target position on the road. When approaching a lane drop, the onboard system projects current vehicle conditions into the future and uses the model to continuously estimate the success probability of changing lanes before reaching the lane-end, and advises the driver or autonomous vehicle to start a lane changing maneuver when that probability drops below a certain threshold. In a simulation case study, the proposed system was used on a segment of the I-81 interstate highway with two lane drops - transitioning from four lanes to two lanes - to advise vehicles on avoiding the lane drops. The results indicate that the proposed system can reduce average delay by up to 50% and maximum delay by up to 33%, depending on traffic flow and the ratio of vehicles equipped with the advance warning system., Manuscript accepted for publication in the International Journal of Transportation Science and Technology. The installation of a ground energy storage system (ESS) in the substation can improve the recovery and utilization of regenerative braking energy. This paper proposes an energy management strategy (EMS) of adaptive threshold adjustment for ground ESS. In this regard, this paper analyzes the energy flow in traction power supply system (TPSS) with different headways and no-load voltage. According to the influence of charge and discharge threshold on the energy flow in TPSS, the laws of energy flow are formulated. Subsequently, an EMS based on fuzzy logic control (FLC) is designed. The proposed EMS is adaptive to the variation of headway and no-load voltage. By monitoring the charge-discharge effect of ESS and the variation of substation output energy within two adjacent periods, the charge-discharge threshold is adjusted adaptively to guarantee the recovery effect of regenerative braking energy. Finally, the simulation and field experiment of proposed EMS are carried out with ground energy storage device and actual line conditions of Beijing Batong line. The experiment results indicate the good performance of proposed EMS in terms of energy saving.

Introduction A small body of research on the real-world use of commercially available partial driving automation suggests that drivers may struggle with or otherwise lapse in adequately monitoring the system and highway environment, and little is known about key issues such as how behavior associated with system use changes over time. The current study assessed how driver disengagement, defined as visual-manual interaction with electronics or removal of hands from the wheel, differed as drivers became more accustomed to partial automation over a 4-week trial. Methods Ten volunteers drove a Volvo S90 with adaptive cruise control (ACC), which automates speed and headway, and Pilot Assist, which combines ACC and continuous lane centering. Instrumentation captured automation use, secondary task activity, hands-on-wheel status, vehicle speed, and GPS location during all trips. Results The longer drivers used the Pilot Assist partial automation system, the more likely they were to become disengaged, with a significant increase in the odds of observing participants with both hands off the steering wheel or manipulating a cell phone relative to manual control. Results associated with use of ACC found comparable or lower levels of disengagement compared to manual driving as the study progressed. Discussion This study highlights concerns about vehicle control and the degree to which drivers remain actively in the loop when using automation. Calls for implementing more robust driver monitoring with partial automation appear warranted—particularly those that track head or eye position.

Energy feedback systems (EFSs) have been widely applied in urban rail transit, and a power flow algorithm and energy-saving evaluation of urban rail power supply systems with EFSs are studied in this paper. First, trains, the reflux system, and traction substations with EFSs are modeled, and the multimode transitions are analyzed, including the maximum power state of the EFS. Then, a modified AC/DC unified power flow algorithm for the DC power supply system, which simplified the DC reflux system is proposed, and a field case study based on a multiple train scenario is presented to validate the algorithm. Furthermore, system-level energy-saving evaluation indexes are applied according to system power flow analysis. When the headway time decreases, the proposed indexes decrease in general mainly as there is more regenerative braking energy absorbed by adjacent trains. The higher the load rates of the step-down substations are, the more daily feedback energy is utilized. When the start voltage of the EFS ranges from 1650 V to 1770 V, the maximum energy-saving rate reaches 11.9%, which occurs when the start voltage is 1670 V. When the no-load voltage is relatively high, the start voltage should not be higher than 1750 V to keep the system running in high efficiency. These results can provide advice for the design and operation of traction power supply systems with EFSs.

In this research, an optimal control-based Cooperative Adaptive Cruise Control (CACC) system is proposed. The proposed system is able to enforce a target time gap between platoon members and is formulated in the space domain instead of the time domain which is adopted by most optimal control-based CACC systems in the past. By having this change, its robustness against communication failure is greatly improved and thus minimum safety headway buffer is reduced which leads to better mobility. In addition, third-order vehicle dynamics are modeled into the proposed control in order to improve control precision when implemented in the field. Local stability and string stability are theoretically proven. The proposed system is evaluated by simulation. Results reveal that the proposed CACC system outperforms the state-of-the-art $\mathcal {H}_\infty $ synthesis-based controller and linear feedback-based controller. The benefit of fuel consumption reduction ranges from 0.35% to 16.11%, while the benefit of CO2 emission ranges from 0.48% to 12.40%. Furthermore, the proposed CACC improves local stability from 11.03% to 25.90%, and string stability by up to 23.82%. The computation speed of the proposed method is 1.26 ms (with prediction horizon as 1.5 s and resolution as 0.1 s) on a regular laptop which indicates the proposed system’s potential to be applied in real-time.

Although the implementation of a new Automatic Train Protection (ATP) system increases the safety level, it also exerts some impact on the blocking time in block sections, and consequently, on the headway between trains. At the same time, ATP systems introduce a train positioning system based on odometry calculation and reporting back to the trackside system. This paper describes the concept of using virtual blocks based on train position reporting in the ATP system for purposes of non-occupancy determination. Virtual blocks can be used to reduce headways on railway lines without increasing the number of trackside signalling devices. Preliminary capacity assessment was performed to calculate the average headway depending on the signalling system with reference to a case study.

The rationality of the spacing strategy directly affects automated vehicle safety and road utilization. It is necessary to consider practical actuator constraints in vehicle platoon control systems to ensure the security and driving comfort. In this paper, an important actuator constraint and a more effective spacing strategy are embedded into the connected automated vehicle platoon control. A new consensus-based control approach with the input saturation and variable time headway (VTH) spacing strategy is proposed. The homogeneous time-varying communication delays are included into the consensus algorithm. By employing the Lyapunov-Krasovskii theorem and the Lyapunov-Razumikhin theorem, the global asymptotic stability conditions of the system under fixed topology and switching topology are derived, respectively. Numerical simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach and the necessity of introducing the input saturation and VTH spacing strategy.

Vehicle platooning is a perspective technique for intelligent transportation systems (ITS). Connected and automated vehicles (CAVs) use dedicated short-range communication (DSRC) to form a convoy, in which the following vehicles can receive the information from their preceding vehicles to achieve safe automated driving and maintain a short headway. Consequently, a vehicle platoon can improve traffic safety and efficiency, further reducing fuel consumption. However, emergency braking inevitably occurs when the platoon meets an accident or a sudden mechanical failure. It is more critical when the wireless communication got delays. Therefore, “how to predefine a minimum safe distance (MSD) considering communication delay” is a challenging issue. To this end, a series of field tests were carried out to measure the communication delay of IEEE 802.11p that is the underlying protocol of DSRC. Subsequently, MSD is modeled and analyzed when the platoon travels at accelerating, cruising, and decelerating states. More importantly, the results of field tests are applied in the models to investigate the impact of communication delay on MSD in practice. The simulation results verify that the proposed model can effectively maintain the platooning vehicles’ safety even if emergency braking happens with certain communication delays.

The high proportion of motorcycles and lack of lane discipline at signalized intersections under mixed traffic conditions are the motivation to conduct this study. The discharge headway models are constructed at three (3) signalized intersections in the SARBAGITA urban area in Bali. The result shows that motorcycles affect saturation flow due to their shorter headway than light vehicles while increasing discharge headway of other vehicles. The discharge headway between pairs of heavy vehicles is longer than these of motorcycles due to their slower acceleration at signalized intersections. This study also found that the discharge headway plays a significant role in determining the saturation flow and capacity of a signalized intersection. If a heavy vehicle is one of the pairs, then it has the potential to have a headway exceeding the other vehicle pairs. This indicates, however, that the higher proportion of motorcycles at the signalized intersection approach does not necessarily mean shorter discharge headway. There may be other influencing factors, such as the riding behavior of motorcyclists. The dominance of motorcycles can affect the value of the saturated flow, but an increase in the proportion of heavy vehicles may reduce the effect of motorcycles on the saturation flows.

The advent of Connected and Autonomous Vehicles (CAVs) and Mobile Internet technologies is reshaping the public transport sector. Autonomous buses are equipped with varying advanced sensors, and hold great promises to enhancing the responsiveness and flexibility of public transit system. In the context of CAVs, transit operators can not only optimize service headway but also adjust bus capacity to meet the time-varying passenger demand. Anticipated benefits of introducing autonomous buses to the existing transit systems include safety improvement, driver cost reduction, and optimal routing. Bus electrification is another global trend to replace traditional diesel buses for energy savings. Electric buses are advantageous to both operators and passengers due to low greenhouse gas emission, maintenance cost, as well as noise pollution. In recent years, demand responsive public transport (DRPT) services (e.g. customized bus, microtransit) receive huge success thanks to the development of Mobile Internet. Unlike traditional bus services or the fixed-route transit service that relies on passive recipients, fixed stops, and schedules, DRPT can provide personalized service for specific clients through interactive information platform (Internet or smartphone). The aforementioned new types of public transit services significantly improve service quality, reduce energy consumption, and ultimately attract more ridership. To fully explore the benefits of personalized, electric and autonomous transit systems, new analytical models and data-driven methods for transit planning and operation are needed. The authors have selected 15 articles for review in this special issue. A summary of these articles is outlined below.

Intraindividual variability is a fundamental behavioural characteristic of aging but has been examined to a very limited extent in driving. This study investigated intraindividual variability in driving simulator measures in healthy drivers of different ages using the coefficient of variation (COV) as a variability measure. Participants were healthy volunteers who were regular drivers, who were divided into a “young” group, a “middle-aged” group, and an “old” group. They drove in two environments (rural, 72 drivers; urban, 60 drivers), under conditions of moderate and high traffic load, without and with distraction (conversation). Significant differences in COV were observed in the rural condition for headway distance and lateral position as a function of traffic load, with high traffic (without and with distraction) resulting in increased COV of headway and decreased COV of lateral position. Significant differences in COV were observed in the urban condition for headway distance only, with high traffic (without and with distraction) resulting in increased COV of headway. No age effects were found for any of the driving conditions. The results indicate that traffic load affected headway distance and lateral position in opposite directions in all three age groups: high traffic resulted in increased variability of headway in both rural and urban conditions but in decreased variability of lateral position in the rural conditions compared to moderate traffic irrespective of distraction. The study indicates that driving conditions affect the intraindividual variability of driving measures in selective ways, which may be linked to the extent of automatization of the driving variables and to adaptive changes to traffic condition challenges.

Headway is a safety measure commonly used to investigate driving behaviour and driver performance. Its purpose is to reflect the following distance or time between a leading and following vehicle in traffic. It is therefore associated with drivers’ response time, such as in braking or swerving, during safety critical events. In the literature, distance and time headway are defined in different ways, despite standard definitions in the traffic engineering literature, which prompted this systematic review of headway definitions across a range of study designs, in order to recommend approaches to improve the accuracy and reproducibility of headway definitions used in road safety contexts. PRISMA guidelines were followed to search four databases (EMBASE, COMPENDEX, SCOPUS and MEDLINE) for studies that reported on headways or discussed methodological approaches. The search and filtering of abstracts identified 110 articles for a qualitative synthesis. Four broad approaches to measuring headways were detected: studies using simulation, roadside external features, on-road features, and on-vehicle features. Studies were coded as to whether they included written explanation, mathematical statements, or pictorial depictions of headway. Only 49.6% of studies contextualised headway sufficiently for reproducibility. Reproducibility is crucial for accurate interpretation of research findings and comparisons across studies. It is recommended that headway definitions should a) exclude vehicle or parts of vehicle lengths, b) include reference points (e.g., bumper/axle/rear), c) have a consistent terminology, and d) include the accuracy of headway measuring devices to report the precision of a study’s findings.

The modeling complexity of the traction power system and variation of traffic conditions bring challenges for the optimization of energy management strategy for supercapacitor energy storage systems in urban rail transit. Therefore, in this paper a deep-reinforcement-learning-based energy management strategy is proposed: the energy management system is modeled as an intelligent agent, the reward function is formulated comprehensively considering the energy-saving and voltage-stabilizing effects of supercapacitor, a traction power system simulator is developed to emulate the environment, and the agent’s behavior is improved in each headway through the deep Q-learning algorithm, and converges to the nearly-optimal policy. The proposed strategy is verified through simulation based on the Beijing Subway Batong Line. The study results show that it dynamically adjusts the voltage thresholds so as to better allocate the supercapacitor capacity along the time horizon. The energy-saving and voltage-stabilizing effects are significantly improved compared with the fixed-threshold strategy and genetic optimization, and demonstrating to be in close proximity to the optimal benchmark deduced from dynamic programming.

Managed lanes, such as a dedicated lane for connected and automated vehicles (CAVs), can provide not only technological accommodation but also desired market incentives for road users to adopt CAVs in the near future. In this paper, we investigate traffic flow characteristics with two configurations of the managed lane across different market penetration rates and quantify the benefits from the perspectives of lane-level headway distribution, fuel consumption, communication density, and overall network performance. The results highlight the benefits of implementing managed lane strategies for CAVs: (1) A dedicated CAV lane significantly extends the stable region of the speed-flow diagram and yields a greater road capacity. As the result shows, the highest flow rate is 3400 vehicles per hour per lane at 90% market penetration rate with one CAV lane. (2) The concentration of CAVs in one lane results in a narrower headway distribution (with smaller standard deviation) even with partial market penetration. (3) A dedicated CAV lane is also able to eliminate duel-bell-shape distribution that is caused by the heterogeneous traffic flow. (4) A dedicated CAV lane creates a more consistent CAV density, which facilitates communication activity and decreases the probability of packet dropping.

In the upcoming decades, connected vehicles will join regular vehicles on the road, and the characteristics of traffic flows will change accordingly. To better understand mixed traffic flow (regular vehicles and connected vehicles) characteristics, a generic car-following modeling framework for this new mixed traffic flow on an urban road under a connected vehicle environment is proposed in this paper. Considering a vehicle’s speed, which is affected by the speed of the preceding vehicle, an improved intelligent driver model (IDM) is used as the car-following model for regular vehicles. An extended cooperative adaptive cruise control (CACC) based on the nonlinear dynamic headway strategy was established as the car-following model for connected vehicles. The fundamental diagram model of mixed traffic flow under different market penetration rates of CACC vehicles is investigated, and the traffic flow operation mechanism of connected vehicles is analyzed to improve the capacity. In addition, simulation experiments on urban roads are designed to evaluate the queue time and length of vehicles passing through congested sections under different market penetration rates of CACC vehicles. The results demonstrate that the proposed model can effectively describe the current situation of traffic flow on urban roads under different market penetration rates of CACC vehicles. The increase in the market penetration rates of CACC vehicles can significantly improve the traffic flow efficiency. When CACC vehicles reach 100% of all vehicles, the queue length on congested roads can be shortened by 64.6%, and the total travel time on congested roads can be reduced by 48.3%.

Drivers' phone use during the red traffic signal and queue discharge activity were investigated at five signalized intersections in Hangzhou, China, with the aims to explore factors influencing phone use behavior while drivers are waiting for a red traffic signal and the impact on the queue discharge. Observations were conducted by recording videos at each intersection during different times of the day and on different days of the week. Of the 2596 drivers observed while waiting at red traffic signals, 36.7% used their phone for some purpose and 20.8% used it until-green. It was found that phone use was not even restricted to within the red-phase of the traffic signal. About 7% continued the use of their phone beyond the redphase while moving off. Logistic regression analyses with phone use as the dependent variable showed that red countdown timer, waiting time, the fact whether the driver was on its own or with a passenger, and the type of vehicle were significant covariates. Start-up delays for queues, with queue leaders whether using their phone or not, were compared using t-test of difference between means. The driving performance, with reference to vehicle headway, was also analyzed against driver phone use. Results reveal that while phone use that was ceased before the change to green has an insignificant effect on the start-up delay, until-green phone use, especially phone use that was continued after-red while moving off, significantly affected the start-up delay and driving performance negatively.

Although converting an intersection into a roundabout has been shown to result in fewer injury accidents for both motor vehicle drivers and pedestrians, the effect on bicyclists’ safety is unclear or even negative. This study focuses on roundabouts without bicycle facilities (i.e., mixed traffic conditions) and makes use of semi-automated video observation software with the aim of analysing bicyclists’ behaviour and safety on roundabouts with different diameter. Four urban roundabouts in Belgium are observed. Interactions between bicyclists and other vehicles are analysed using speed, lateral position and five indicators to describe the closeness of interactions (TTCmin, PET, T2 min, lateral overtaking proximity and minimum distance headway). Additionally, the lateral position and riding speed of bicyclists that are in interaction with other vehicles is compared with the behaviour of bicyclists that are not in interaction with other vehicles. The behavioural analysis revealed that regardless of the type of condition (free-flow bicyclists or different interactions bicyclist-car), bicyclists always ride faster on roundabouts with big diameter and slower on roundabouts with small diameter. Moreover, bicyclists ride closer to the central island on roundabouts with big diameter compared to roundabouts with small diameter for all the conditions analysed. The analysis of surrogate safety indicators (TTCmin, PET, T2 min) revealed that close interactions between bicyclists and cars are relatively frequent at both small and big roundabouts. The percentages of close interactions are more or less equal for roundabouts with big diameter (7.86% of observed interactions) and roundabouts with small diameter (8.24%). The analysis of the indicators to describe the closeness of interactions also showed that the closest interactions at roundabouts are all situations where the bicyclist has a leading role. The analysis of the most common types of close interactions revealed indeed that the most common close interactions are interactions where the bicyclist is entering the roundabout. The analysis of lateral overtaking proximity showed that bicyclists who overtake a car take smaller lateral overtaking proximities compared to cars overtaking a bicyclist. The analysis of minimum distance headway finally revealed that bicyclists who ride behind a car take smaller distance headways compared to cars driving behind a bicyclist.

This paper proposes an improved intelligent driver model (IDM) by considering the information of multiple front and rear vehicles to describe the car-following behaviour of CAVs (Connected and autonomous vehicles). The model involves the velocity and acceleration of multiple front and rear vehicles as well as the velocity difference and headway between the host vehicle and its surrounding vehicles. By introducing location-related parameters, the model quantitatively expresses the change in influence degree of a surrounding vehicle with its location to the host vehicle. To maximize traffic stability, we obtain the optimal value of the parameters in the model and the effect of specific time delays on the stability of traffic flow with numerical simulation. The results indicate that for a single vehicle control, the proposed model provides a much quicker and smoother acceleration and deceleration process to the desired speed than the IDM and multi-front IDM. And for fleet control, the proposed multi-front and rear IDM is superior to the other two models in decreasing the starting and braking time and increasing the stability of speed and acceleration. With effective car-following behaviour control, it is helpful to improve the operation efficiency of CAVs and enhance the stability of traffic flow. In addition to the car-following behaviour control, the model can be utilized for fleet control in the case of CAVs’ homogeneous flow. This model can also serve as an effective tool to simulate car-following behaviour, which is beneficial for road traffic management and infrastructure layout in connected environments.

In major metropolitan cities, metro and intercity rail services usually share stations or have stations in close proximity to facilitate smooth connections for passengers. A large number of passengers may arrive on metro platforms within a short period of time upon the arrivals of intercity trains, while the number may drop significantly afterward. This injected passenger demand is not coped well by the metro timetable with the commonly adopted regular train headway. Focusing on metro lines connecting to intercity railways, this study puts forward a timetable model to optimize train headways at each station, assuming all passengers board the first train available. The objective is to minimize the total waiting time of passengers at platforms throughout the metro line, without changing the number of vehicle trips. To calculate the passenger waiting time accurately, a mathematical model is proposed to obtain the number of transfer passengers arriving at metro platform in each time interval, based on arrivals of intercity trains and transfer facilities at the station. A genetic algorithm, combined with interior-point algorithm, is developed to obtain the solution of the proposed timetable model. Real-life case studies show that the optimized timetable reduces the total passenger waiting time when compared with the current timetable and the solution of another model optimizing train departure times at the first station only. In addition, the peak number of passengers congregating at metro platforms drops significantly, which relieves passenger crowding on the platform.

This paper investigates the robust distributed cruise control problem of multiple high-speed trains under external disturbances. First, by modeling each train as a cascade of point masses connected by spring-like couplers, the longitudinal interaction between adjacent cars are represented by the connected topological graph. Then, under the framework of the communication-based train control technology, the interaction of desirable speed information among trains and the wayside control center is described by the directed topological graph. Next, a distributed cruise controller is designed by taking advantages of the graphic theory such that the multiple trains track different target speeds, and both the distance of neighboring cars and the headway of successive trains are kept in appropriate ranges. Finally, to eliminate the influence of external disturbances, we adopt the disturbance observer to approximate the perturbations, and present a sufficient condition for the existence of the distributed control strategy and the observer gain parameter in form of the linear matrix inequality (LMI). Numerical experiments illustrate that the composite control law is effective in inhibiting the external disturbances, and guaranteeing the safety, efficiency and comfort of high-speed trains’ movement.

This paper presents an optimization algorithm for energy-efficient driving of electric vehicles. The algorithm is based on Pontryagin's Minimum Principle by considering the driving mission as an optimal control problem. On a planned route, diverse application cases may occur due to various physical traits such as powertrain (e.g., switching between motor and generator operation), environmental variations (e.g., terrain grade change), traffic laws (e.g., speed limits), and safety concerns (e.g., headway to the leading vehicle). The proposed algorithm handles these real-world challenges by considering the perturbation to the system dynamics and the constraints to the control and state variables.

Advanced Driver Assistance Systems in heavy commercial road vehicles (HCRVs) have become necessary with the increasing contribution of HCRVs to road accident fatalities, where human factors form the major contributor. Collision avoidance systems can help in reducing fatalities through automated braking when required. This study focused on the development of a framework for the computation of the minimum time headway, for a Vehicle-to-Vehicle (V2V) communication-based collision avoidance system for HCRVs, that must be maintained through automated braking to avoid a collision. The framework, as well as the developed Collision Avoidance Algorithm (CAA), considers critical attributes of an HCRV such as significant load variations and brake actuator dynamics. Further, the time headway formulation varies with the initial longitudinal speed and considers communication latency. Experiments were conducted in a Hardware-in-Loop test setup to evaluate the efficacy of the proposed formulations. It was observed that the incorporation of communication latency and initial longitudinal speed explicitly in the time headway formulation maintained the desired final spacing between the vehicles, over a range of communication latencies and various host vehicle longitudinal speeds, which was not the case when the above factors were not considered.

The problem of optimizing the operation of Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) lines that share a common corridor is analyzed. The goal is to minimize passengers travel time, including waiting at stations. In the common corridor, stations are shared by several bus lines which present riding alternatives for passengers with origins and destinations within the corridor. Since buses from different lines interact in the corridor, optimal multi-line headways that consider headways across all lines can alter single-line headways so as to maximize user benefit. We develop the system model in a mathematical programming fashion, embedded with the control strategy as bus holding decision variables. The method, named Multi-line Integrated Holding Control Strategy (M-IHCS), implements the required bus headway regulation for multiple lines in an integrated and simultaneous manner. Numerical tests of the optimization approach developed for the system model show the distinctive features of the solutions, indicating the superiority of multi-line headway control over its single-line counterpart.

Travel time is a variable that varies over both time and space. Hence, an ideal formulation should be able to capture its evolution over time and space. A mathematical representation capturing such variations was formulated from first principles, using the concept of conservation of vehicles. The availability of position and speed data obtained from GPS enabled buses provide motivation to rewrite the conservation equation in terms of speed alone. As the number of vehicles is discrete, the speed-based equation was discretized using Godunov scheme and used in the prediction scheme that was based on the Kalman filter. With a limited fleet size having an average headway of 30 min, availability of travel time data at small interval that satisfy the requirement of stability of numerical solution possess a big challenge. To address this issue, a continuous speed fill matrix spatially and temporally was developed with the help of historic data and used in this study. The performance of the proposed Advanced Time-Space Discterization (AdTSD) method was evaluated with real field data and compared with existing approaches. Results show that AdTSD approach was able to perform better than historical average approach with an advantage up to 11% and 5% compared to Base Time Space Discretization (BTSD) approach. Also, from the results it was observed that the maximum deviation in prediction was in the range of 2–3 min when it is predicted 10 km ahead and the error is close to zero when it is predicted a section ahead i.e. when the bus is close to a bus stop, indicating that the prediction accuracy achieved is suitable for real field implementation.

Vehicle heterogeneity, lack of lane discipline, lack of infrastructure facilities, and weak enforcement of traffic rules are all characteristics of Indian traffic. These characteristics make Indian roads difficult for non-motorized road users, especially pedestrians. Most intersections in urban areas in India are unsignalized, which results in complex interactions between pedestrians and motorists. This study aims to understand pedestrian gap acceptance behavior at unsignalized intersections in India under heterogeneous traffic conditions. Pedestrian data were collected from six unsignalized intersections in the city of Kanpur. The critical gap was estimated using Wu’s (2006) macroscopic model, and then the effects of several variables on the critical gap were studied. A discrete choice model (binary logit model) was developed to understand the choice of accepted and rejected vehicular gaps depending on traffic, road, and peer pedestrian characteristics. The mean critical headway was 3.76 s using Wu’s model. The behavioral analysis revealed that pedestrians accept rolling gaps to cross unsignalized intersections, resulting in a reduction of the size of the critical gap. The adoption of rolling gap behavior can be attributed to the unyielding behavior of motorists, which forces pedestrians to accept short vehicular gaps in the traffic stream.

Energy-efficient train operation is regarded as an effective way to reduce the operational cost and carbon emissions in metro systems. Reduction of the traction energy and increasing of the regenerative energy are two important ways for saving energy, which is closely related to the train timetable and driving strategy. To minimize the systematic net energy consumption, i.e., the difference between the traction energy consumption and the reused regenerative energy, this paper proposes an integrated train operation approach by jointly optimizing the train timetable and driving strategy. A precise train driving strategy is presented and the timetable model considers the headway between successive trains, the distribution of the trip time, and passenger demand in this paper. In addition, a distributed regenerative braking energy model is proposed, based on which the integrated optimization model is formulated. Then, a two-level approach is proposed to solve the problem. At the driving strategy level, the train control problem is transferred into a multi-step decision problem and the Dynamic Programming method is introduced to calculate the energy-efficient driving strategy with the given trip time. As for the timetable level, the trip times and headway of trains are optimized by using the Simulated Annealing algorithm based on the results of dynamic programming method. The timetable optimization level balances the mechanical traction energy of multi-interstations and the amount of the reused regenerative energy such that the net mechanical energy consumption of the metro system is minimized. Furthermore, two numerical examples are conducted for train operations in the peak and off-peak hours separately based on the real-world data of a metro line. The simulation results illustrate that the proposed approach can produce a good performance on energy-saving.

Virtual coupling is a promising innovation aimed at increasing railway capacity. Compared to current railway signaling systems, it allows two or more trains to run with reduced headway between them. However, such reduced headways are a challenge to safety. In this work we consider this challenge by formally describing and verifying an approach to virtual coupling. We propose a general modeling method based on topological manifolds to describe the protection logic for virtual coupling train control systems. We also describe the basic train control elements in topological terms and analyze the line condition of our virtual coupling logic. We establish that the line condition safety requirements and its representation as a manifold are equivalent and further provide a formal definition of the concept of a movement authority with manifold notations. This allows us to consider the dynamic behavior of trains and a series of theorems that establish the correctness of our protection logic for virtual coupling. Finally, we apply the presented methods to a case study. The results show that the proposed method provides a suitable way to realize a virtual coupling logic safely.

Purpose This study aims to propose a speed guidance model of the CV environment to alleviate traffic congestion at intersections and improve traffic efficiency. By introducing the theory of moving block section for high-speed train control, a speed guidance model based on the quasi-moving block speed guidance (QMBSG) is proposed to direct platoon including human-driven vehicles and connected vehicles (CV) through the intersection coordinately. Design/methodology/approach In this model, the green time of the intersection is divided into multiple block intervals according to the minimal safety headway. Connected vehicles can pass through the intersection by following the block interval using the QMBSG model. The block interval is assigned dynamically according to the traveling relation of HV and CV, when entering the communication range of the intersection. To validate the comprehensive guidance effect of the proposed model, a general evaluation function (GEF) is established. Compared to CVs without speed guidance, the simulation results show that the GEF of QMBSG model has an obvious improvement. Findings Compared to CVs without speed guidance, the simulation results show that the GEF of QMBSG model has an obvious improvement. Also, compared to the single intersection speed guidance model, the GEF value of the QMBSG model improves over 17.1%. To further explore the guidance effect, the impact of sensitivity factors of the CVs’ environment, such as intersection environment, communication range and penetration rate (PR) is analyzed. When the PR reaches 75.0%, the GEF value will change suddenly and the model guidance effect will be significantly improved. This paper also analyzes the impact of the length of block interval under different PR and traffic demands. It is found that the proposed model has a better guidance effect when the length of the block section is 2 s, which facilitates traffic congestion alleviation of the intersection in practice. Originality/value Based on the aforementioned discussion, the contributions of this paper are three-fold. Based on the traveling information of HV/CV and the signal phase and timing plans, the QMBSG model is proposed to direct platoon consisting of HV and CV through the intersection coordinately, by following the block interval assigned dynamically. Considering comprehensively the indexes of mobility, safety and environment, a GEF is provided to evaluate the guidance effect of vehicles through the intersection. Sensitivity analysis is carried out on the QMBSG model. The key communication and traffic parameters of the CV environment are analyzed, such as path attenuation, PR, etc. Finally, the effect of the length of block interval is explored.

Optimal velocity (OV)-based car-following model can be easily applied to the transportation system composed of intelligent connected vehicle (ICV) via vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communication, since this model only requires space headway and velocity differences of preceding vehicles. However, the sudden velocity changes of the leading vehicle will decrease the control performance of following vehicles. Particularly, the farther the distance between the following vehicle and the leading vehicle is, the worse the control performance of the following vehicle is. Besides this problem, the nonlinear information of OV-based car-following models is often not fully utilized due to the linearization for the convenience of stability analysis and controller design. To address these problems, the factors related to velocity sudden changes are taken into account for each ICV simultaneously and compensated by the proposed feedforward compensator. Based on the compensator, a finite-time traffic flow controller is designed for each ICV to smooth the space headway in traffic flow subject to sudden velocity changes and make full use of the nonlinear information of OV-based model. Finally, the theoretical analysis via Lyapunov approach and the numerical simulations are carried out to verify the effectiveness of the proposed method.

With the rising energy prices and increasing environmental awareness, the energy efficiency of metro transit system has attracted much attention in recent years. This study proposes a two-step optimisation method to optimise speed profile and timetable, aiming to reduce the operational energy consumption of metro transit system. First, a coasting point searching algorithm is designed to reduce tractive energy consumption by optimising speed profile and running time distribution scheme. Then, a mixed-integer linear programming model is constructed to maximise the overlap time between the accelerating and braking phases by optimising headway and dwell time, in order to improve the utilisation of regenerative braking energy (RBE). Furthermore, numerical simulations are presented based on the data from a Guangzhou Metro Line. The results show that the tractive energy consumption can be reduced by 8.46% and the utilisation of RBE can be improved by 11.6%.

The headway-based control method is usually used to regulate the bus headways and improve reliability of public transit. In general, the holding control strategy is applied at the control point, because enough space for dwell longer at the control point is required, while the stop-skipping control strategy can be used at any bus stop. However, in the headway-based control method, too much stop-skipping will bring longer waiting time and make the passengers impatient. The number and distribution of control points for stop-skipping are not considered in previous self-equalizing bus headway control works. Therefore, in this paper, the control points selection rules for stop-skipping involving their number and distribution on the bus route are discussed. A second by second discrete system is formulated to describe the bus operation. In the proposed control method, the threshold value for activating stop-skipping strategy is raised, avoiding provoking much additional waiting time because of boarding rejected. In the numerical analysis, a set of cases are conducted to evaluate the performance of control method under different number and distribution of control points for stop-skipping. The numerical results show that distribution of control points for stop-skipping has a greater influence on the public transit than the number.

Aiming at solving a typical problem of past research using accident experience statistics of being unable to adapt to changing traffic flows, this paper provides an evaluation method of the risk of vehicle rear-end collisions at red-light-camera (RLC) intersections based on theoretical probabilities. Taking advantage of trajectory data of vehicles at the two similar intersections, which are Cao’an Road and Lvyuan Road with RLCs and Cao’an Road and Anhong Road without RLCs in Shanghai, a binary logit (BL) model of stop-and-go decision-making is established. Using the model and adjusting the headway and potential travel time, we can perform simulation and analysis of rear-end collisions. The result shows that this method is feasible to analyse the influence of RLCs on rear-end collisions. The analysis indicates that RLCs can cause higher speeds for vehicles passing the RLC intersection and more abnormal driving behaviors, which increase the difficulty of stop-and-go decision-making. RLCs do not always lead to an increase of rear-end collisions. For vehicles close to or far from intersection at the decision-making time, RLCs will significantly reduce the possibility of rear-end collisions; however, for vehicles in the potential travel time of 2 s∼3 s, RLCs will increase the probability of rear-end collisions.

Driving simulation is an efficient, safe, and data-collection-friendly method to examine driving behavior in a controlled environment. However, the validity of a driving simulator is inconsistent when the type of the driving simulator or the driving scenario is different. The purpose of this research is to verify driving simulator validity in driving behavior research in work zones. A field experiment and a corresponding simulation experiment were conducted to collect behavioral data. Indicators such as speed, car-following distance, and reaction delay time were chosen to examine the absolute and relative validity of the driving simulator. In particular, a survival analysis method was proposed in this research to examine the validity of reaction delay time. The result indicates the following: (1) most indicators are valid in driving behavior research in the work zone. For example, spot speed, car-following distance, headway, and reaction delay time show absolute validity. (2) Standard deviation of the car-following distance shows relative validity. Consistent with previous researches, some driving behaviors appear to be more aggressive in the simulation environment.

This study estimated composite headway distributions consisting of follower and non-follower headway elements and used the follower percentage obtained as the estimated parameters of those distributions to evaluate the quality of service (QOS) of traffic flow on Japanese intercity expressways under uncongested conditions. Analysis of pulse data obtained by vehicle detectors at multiple points with differing geometric structures showed that follower percentage is influenced by lane traffic volume, vehicle pair, and lane operation. Use of follower percentage also enabled clear and quantitative comparison and evaluation of the QOS of traffic flow for different lane operation formats, which could not be adequately expressed by such conventional macroscopic indices as average speed and traffic density. This indicates that follower percentage is a suitable performance measure for evaluating the QOS of traffic flow.

Recently, simulation models have been widely used around the world to evaluate the performance of different traffic facilities and management strategies for efficient and sustainable transportation systems. One of the keys factors for ensuring the reliability of the models in reflecting local conditions is the calibration and validation of microsimulation models. The majority of the existing calibration efforts focus is on the experimental designs of driver behaviour and lane-changing parameters. Towards this end, this paper describes the necessary procedure for the calibration and validation of a microscopic model using the VISSIM software, during peak hours. The procedure is applied on Muscat Expressway in the Sultanate of Oman. The calibration parameters and the measure-of-effectiveness are identified by using multi-parameter sensitivity analysis. The optimum values for these parameters are obtained by minimising errors between simulated data and field data. In our proposed model, we used traffic volume and travel speed for model calibration, as well as average travel time for validation of the calibrated model. The achieved results showed that driving characteristics significantly impacted the merging/diverging traffic flow ratio in the merging area, the link length and the distance between on-ramps and off-ramps, as well as the percentage of heavy vehicles. The results also showed that having both the advanced merging and cooperative lane-change settings active, along with safety distance reduction factor, necessary lane change, minimum headway (front/rear), and emergency stop, had a significant influence on simulation precision, especially at on-ramps and off-ramps. Finally, our proposed model can be utilized as a base for future traffic strategy analysis and intelligent transportation systems evaluation to help decision makers with long-term and sustainable development decisions.

It is a common practice for transit lines with fluctuating passenger demands to use demand-driven bus scheduling to reduce passenger waiting time and avoid bus overcrowding. However, current literature on the demand-driven bus scheduling generally assumes fixed bus capacity and exclusively optimizes bus dispatch headways. With the advent of connected and autonomous vehicle technology and the introduction of autonomous minibus/shuttle, the joint design of bus capacity and dispatch headway holds promises to further improving the system efficiency while reducing operating and passenger costs. This paper formulates this problem as an integer nonlinear programming model for transit systems operating with mixed human-driven and autonomous buses. In such mixed operating environment, the model simultaneously considers: (1) dynamic capacity design of autonomous bus, i.e., autonomous buses with varying capacity can be obtained by assembling and/or dissembling multiple autonomous minibuses; (2) trajectory control of autonomous bus, i.e., autonomous bus can dynamically adjust its running time as a function of its forward and backward headways; and (3) stop-level passenger boarding and alighting behavior. The objective of the model is designed to balance the trade-off between the operating costs of dispatching different types of bus and the costs of increased passenger waiting time due to inadequate bus dispatching. The model is solved using a dynamic programming approach. We show that the proposed model is effective in reducing passenger waiting time and total operating cost. Sensitivity analysis is further conducted to explore the impact of miscellaneous factors on optimal dispatching decisions, such as penetration rate of autonomous bus, bus running time variation, and passenger demand level.

Randomness affecting the operation of public transport systems generates significant increments in waiting times. A strategy to deal with this randomness is bus injection, in which buses are kept in specific points along the route ready to be dispatched when an event such as an extremely long headway occurs. In this work, a stochastic model based on the second moment of the headways distribution is developed to determine if one or more buses are worth reserving for injection in a public transport service. A single stop approach is initially used to determine an expression for the optimal headway threshold triggering the injection. Then, a model for the complete service is developed and used to determine when the empty bus should be injected within the headway once the decision to inject it has been taken. We show that the bus should be injected approximately when 57% of the headway has passed. Simulations with real data are used to test the proposed model, proving its accuracy in terms of measuring the impact on waiting times. The results show that reserving a bus to be injected can be better than operating the entire fleet continuously.

In this paper, an adaptive neuro-fuzzy predictor-based control (ANFPC) approach with integrated automotive radar and vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communication for the design of the cooperative adaptive cruise control (CACC) system is presented, which concerns not only the safety and riding comfort of a vehicle but also enhances its fuel efficiency. This paper consists of two main parts: preceding vehicle state estimation and following vehicle controller. First, the prospective information of the preceding vehicle, such as position, velocity, and acceleration, can be derived through radar sensor, and the control force of the preceding vehicle can be transmitted to the following vehicles through V2V communication. A Takagi–Sugeno fuzzy model is then utilized to estimate the preceding vehicle model, and the predicted state sequence of the preceding vehicle can be obtained. Second, based on these predicted data, the following vehicle is controlled by the proposed ANFPC scheme to maintain each vehicle within the desired distance headway and thus achieve string stability of vehicle platooning and fuel efficiency. The experimental results on the CarSim environment show that the proposed control strategy for the CACC system can significantly reduce the fuel consumption while ensuring driving comfort and safety.

Within the headway distance constraints, the potential for reduction of energy consumption by hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) with connectivity could be achieved by optimizing the ego vehicle motion. This paper proposes a look-ahead traffic information-based real-time model predictive control scheme to minimize total monetary cost of HEVs. A chain Gaussian process approach is employed to estimate the probability distribution of future increments of vehicle number over a look-ahead horizon from vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-infrastructure information. The future motion of preceding vehicles could be predicted by the evolution of the traffic density model and velocity tracking model. The above problem is formulated as a nonlinear optimal control problem with predicted disturbance input and dynamic constraints. Optimal solutions are derived through Pontryagin's maximum principle. The effectiveness of the proposed control scheme is evaluated on a traffic-in-the-loop powertrain simulation platform by integrating a commercial traffic platform and an enterprise-level powertrain simulator.

In order to improve the safety, stability, and efficiency of lane change operating, this paper proposes a multivehicle-coordinated strategy under the vehicle network environment. The feasibility of collaborative lane change operation is established by establishing a gain function based on the incentive model. By comparing lane change gain with lane keeping gain, whether it is feasible to perform the collaboration under current conditions can be judged. Based on the model predictive control (MPC), a multiobjective optimization control function for cooperative lane change is established to realize the distributed control. A novel two-stage cooperative lane change framework is proposed, which divides the lane change process into the lane change phase and the longitudinal headway adjustment phase. It is significant to solve the difficult numerical problem caused by the dimension of collision-avoidance constraints and the nonlinearity of vehicle kinematics. In the first stage, the subject vehicle completes lane change operation. Both longitudinal and lateral movements of the vehicle are considered to optimize the acceleration and the error of following distance at this stage; in the second stage, the operation of adjusting longitudinal headway between vehicles in the target lane is completed, and at this period, only the longitudinal motion of the vehicle is considered to optimize the vehicle acceleration error. The rolling optimization time domain algorithm is used to solve the optimization control problem step by step. Finally, based on the US NGSIM open-source traffic flow database, the accuracy and feasibility of the proposed strategy are verified.
