Search

Lietuvoje yra išskirti keturi etnokultūriniai regionai, t. y. Žemaitija, Aukštaitija, Dzūkija ir Suvalkija. Regioninės tapatybės klausimai nėra naujiena. Šiuo metu itin aktualūs tokio pobūdžio klausimai vėl pradėjo reikštis XX a. pabaigoje atsikuriant Lietuvos valstybei. Vis dėlto dabartinę prieštaringai vertinamą tapatybės išraiškos formą jie įgavo po transformacijos, įvykusios Lietuvai pasukus Vakarų keliu. Straipsnyje analizuojami su regioniniu identitetu susiję iššūkiai, su kuriais tenka susidurti Lietuvos valstybei. Vienos iš Lietuvos etninių grupių, t. y. žemaičių savo tapatybės paieškos sąlygojo reikalavimus laikyti žemaičius kaip autochtoninę tautą, o žemaičių tarmę pripažinti kaip atskirą kalbą su visomis jai prideramomis teisėmis. Naujausia ir plačiausiai eskaluojama tokių idėjų išraiška yra žemaičių noras turėti savo valdomą regioną tokiu būdu rekonstruojant ir apsaugant savo identitetą. Lietuvos įstojimas į Europos sąjungą neretai traktuojamas kaip pavojus kultūrinei tapatybei. Dėl šios priežasties ir kitų etnokultūrinių grupių atstovai palaiko savivaldžių regionų idėją. Siekiama skatinti visų keturių savivaldžių etnokultūrinių regionų sukūrimą Lietuvoje. Tokių pasiūlymų autoriai dėl įvairių istorinių, politinių ir socialinių priežasčių neturi įtakingų rėmėjų aukščiausiose valstybės valdžios institucijose bei nesulaukia daug pasekėjų pačiose vietinėse bendruomenėse, nors Žemaitijoje tokią idėją palaikančių visuomenės veikėjų ir kitų asmenų skaičius yra didesnis. The article examines how a search for identity attempted by Žemaitians (Samogitians), a Lithuanian local cultural group, eventually evolves into the demand that Žemaitian community should be recognised as an autochthonous nation, and Žemaitian dialect – as a separate language, with all implicit rights. Attempts to implement the idea of a self-governed region as a guarantee of reconstruction and protection of Žemaitian identity is the most recent and vivid representation of such proceedings. Since Lithuania’s accession to EU is increasingly perceived as a threat to cultural identity, other local cultural groups also tend to support the idea of self-governed regions. A suggestion that four (4) self-governed regions covering respective local culture distribution areas should be created in Lithuania is promoted. The authors of such demands, due to a multitude of historical, political, and social reasons, still do not have many supporters in central government bodies, and even in local communities, although in Žemaitija their number is greater.

Referring to the questionnaire surveys of the residents of various regions of Žemaitija, including the Skuodas district, the author of the article aims to distinguish certain sociocultural features of the residents of Žemaitija in the Skuodas district and show their specific differences in comparison to the residents of other districts of Žemaitija. The data of the questionnaire survey shows that a certain specific feature of the residents of the Skuodas district is their their sub-ethnic self-perception and the stable understanding of their language as a special Lithuanian dialect: they did not demonstrate any efforts to turn their dialect into a mixture of dialect and standard language or to raise it to the status of a distinct Baltic language. The Žemaitians in the Skuodas district are also characterized by a much freer usage of their dialect in public situations. During the research, individuals who did not consider themselves Žemaitians or to whom the Žemaitian dialect was not the language spoken at home were not found in this district, unlike in the border districts of Žemaitija and Aukštaitija. Analysing the self-stereotypes of Žemaitians, one can see that the residents of Skuodas, on the one hand, quite openly and critically articulate their negative features, and on the other, do not avoid emphasizing the positive features of Žemaitians. From the standpoint of the understanding of Žemaitian ethnicity and ethno-political views, the residents of the Skuodas district were markedly distinguished from those of other districts of Žemaitija in their attitude to consider themselves an integral but unique part of the ethnic Lithuanian nation. The residents of this district, in comparison to Žemaitians of other districts, are characterized by an exceptionally strong attachment to the folk tradition, Žemaitian conservatism, and the efforts to hold on to their unchangeable identity of Žemaitians as different Lithuanians. Alongside, the survey showed that the Žemaitians of the Skuodas district do not share the moods of exceptionality and particularism. Researchers of customs and traditional lifestyle have also recorded certain specific features of the Žemaitians of this district.

Straipsnyje gilinamasi į lietuvių rašytojo Mariaus Katiliškio kūryboje gausiai aptinkamus lietuvių tradicinės materialinės buities daiktų ir dvasinės kultūros reiškinių pavadinimus, rašytojo pastebėtus ir užfiksuotus prieškario Lietuvos kaimo gyvenime. Konstatuojama, kad M. Katiliškio grožinėje kūryboje aptinkami tradicinė kaimo kultūros daiktų ir reiškinių pavadinimai reprezentuoja Katiliškių – rašytojo gimtojo kaimo, kuriame prabėgo jo vaikystė ir jaunystė, kaimiečių buitį ir papročius. Remiantis daugeliu etnografinių ir lingvistinių šaltinių, galima teigti, kad M. Katiliškio kūrybos etnografinė leksika nėra vien tik jo gimtojo kaimo ypatybė: ji neabejotinai būdinga platesniam geografiniam plotui – Žagarės apylinkėms. Tiek Katiliškių kaimas, tiek Žagarės apylinkės yra etnografinės Aukštaitijos ir etnografinės Žemaitijos sandūroje, todėl čia paritetiškai susipynusi aukštaitiška ir žemaitiška leksika, sprendžiant pagal M. Katiliškio kūryboje aptinkamus pavadinimus, pastaroji netgi šiek tiek nusveria aukštaitiškąją. This article delves into Lithuanian writer Marius Katiliškis’ names of spiritual culture phenomena and material things in traditional Lithuanian household found abundantly in his works about the pre-war Lithuanian village life. In Katiliškis’ fiction works the names of traditional rural culture objects and phenomena represent Katiliškiai, the writer’s native village, in which he spent his childhood and youth, villagers’ way of life and customs. Basing on a number of ethnographic and linguistic sources, it can be said that Katiliškis’ ethnographic vocabulary is not just a feature of his native village: it is certainly typical of a wider geographical area – Žagarė environs. Both the village of Katiliškiai and Žagarė are on the boundary of ethnographic Aukštaitija (Highlands) and Žemaitija (Lowlands) regions, so here Aukštaitija and Žemaitija vocabulary intertwines on a parity basis, and judging by the names found in Marius Katiliškis’ works, the latter even slightly outweighs the Aukštaitija one.

Analizuojant žemaičių, gyvenančių etnografinės Žemaitijos teritorijoje, masinės apklausos duomenis paaiškėjo, kad žemaičiams bendraujant su kitais lietuviais už Žemaitijos regiono ribų tenka didesnis negu kitiems psichologinės adaptacijos krūvis. Tokia nevienareikšmė žemaičių padėtis pirmiausia atsiranda dėl objektyvių priežasčių: visos trys žemaičių tarmės kur kas labiau negu aukštaičių tarmės yra nutolusios nuo bendrinės lietuvių kalbos. Tai lemia žemaičių tarmių grupės, lietuvių kalboje sudarančios atskirą – žemaičių – dialektą, palyginti gana didelis skirtumas su aukštaičių tarmėmis. Žemaičių kalbinis ir tradicinės kultūros savitumas daug lemia ir „etninių“ žemaičių mąstymą bei jų pastangas kurti rašomąją kalbą žemaičių tarme. Ne tik XIX, bet ir XX a. du kartus buvo iškeltas klausimas dėl reikmės žemaičių tarmę paversti rašto kalba. Vykstant lietuvių regioninių grupių integracijos procesui pastebime ilgalaikius žemaičių kalbinio prisitaikymo poslinkius. XX a. ir dabar jie reiškiasi kalbiniu nužemaitėjimu, laipsnišku jaunesniųjų kartų žemaičių perėjimu prie bendrinės kalbos arba prie aukštaičių tarmės. Žemaičių kalbinis konformizmas pastebimas ne tik Žemaitijos paribiuose, bet ypač kai kuriuose žemaitišką veidą prarandančiuose Žemaitijos miestuose. Kontroversiška žemaičių tarmės padėtis lietuvių nacijos kontekste turėjo reikšmės ir aktualizuojant žemaičių klausimą jau atkurtoje Lietuvos valstybėje XX a. pabaigoje. Article was written based on field research1 collected by the author and his assistants. The object – the current ethnographic Samogitian community. The goal – to find out the reasons, process, stimulating factors and personal motivations of the socio-cultural phenomenon that can be conditionally called the Samogitian people’s “abandoning” of their cultural heritage, the disappearance of their distinct dialect. Analysis of Samogitians, living in the ethnographic territory of Samogitia, through a mass survey, showed that for Samogitians, when communicating with other Lithuanians outside of the region of Samogitia, there is a bigger burden of psychological adaptation than for anyone else. This ambiguous situation of the Samogitians is due to objective reasons: the three Samogitian dialects, much more than the Highlander (Aukštaičiai) dialect, are further from the standard Lithuanian language. This is due to the Samogitian dialect groups’, which form a separate – Samogitian – dialect of the Lithuanian language, relatively large difference from the Highlander dialects. The Samogitian language’s and traditional culture’s singularity determines also the thinking of “ethnic” Samogitians and their efforts to develop a written language in the Samogitian dialect. Not only in the 19th c., but also in the 20th c., the issue of the Samogitian dialect’s need for a written language was raised. In the Lithuanian regional group integration process, long-term Samogitian language adaptation shifts can be seen. In the 20th c. and now they are manifested in linguistic de-samogitianisation (nužemaitėjimas), the gradual transition of younger generation Samogitians to the standard language or the dialect of the Highlanders. Samogitian linguistic conformism can be observed not only in the margins of Samogitia, but especially in some of the cities that are losing their Samogitian features. The controversial situation of the Samogitian dialect in the context of the Lithuanian nation was important in the actualization of the Samogitian question in the restored Lithuanian State at the end of the 20th c.

Jau XIX a. pirmojoje pusėje žemaičiai, prasidėjus jų kultūriniam sąjūdžiui, nesitenkino svetimųjų primesta žemaičių bendruomenės etniškumo samprata - savo esmės klausimą jie ėmė nagrinėti patys. Nors XIX a. viduryje, kaip ir vėlesniais XIX a. dešimtmečiais, esama labai įvairių žemaičių ir aukštaičių samprotavimų apie žemaičių bendruomenę ir jų kalbą (tarmę), tačiau net tarp žemaičių absoliučiai vyravo samprata, kad žemaičiai su kitais lietuviais yra „viena giminė“; vėliau, XIX a. pabaigoje, žemaičiai pradedami įvardyti kaip viena tauta. Artėjant XX a. žemaičio sąvoka vis siaurėjo ir konkretėjo, kol XX a. pradžioje kalbininkų jie buvo pripažinti tik kaip dialektinė lietuvių grupė, o etnologų - kaip viena iš lietuvių etnografinių grupių ir savita regioninė bendruomenė. Į etnografinės grupės suvokimą jie galutinai „nužeminti“ XX a. [...] Žemaičių, kaip ir apskritai lietuvių, samprata pamažu kitėjo ir oficialiuosiuose rusų administracijos raštuose. Jau XIX a. devintojo dešimtmečio pradžioje toliau pripažįstant, kad egzistuoja minėtos lietuvių genties lietuvių, latvių ir žemaičių tautybės, vis dažniau pavartojamas terminas „lietuvių žemaičių kalba“, pamažu pereinama prie naujų terminų. Paskutiniame XIX a. dešimtmetyje bei pirmaisiais XX a. metais, lietuviškos spaudos draudimo panaikinimo išvakarėse ir carinės administracijos raštijoje vis labiau įsivyravo terminai „litovskij narod“ arba „Vilniaus ir Kauno gubernijų lietuviai“, jų kalba - „litovskij jazyk“. Apibūdinant Lietuvos gyventojų etniškumą, vis rečiau bešmėžuoja su žemaitiškumu susiję reikšminiai žodžiai. As early as the beginning of the 19th century, with the start of the Samogitian cultural movement, Samogitians stopped contenting themselves with ethnic definitions of Samogitians imposed by others and started tackling their ethnic essence themselves. Despite varying mid and late 19t h century interpretations of Samogitian ethnicity and their language (dialect) by both Samogitians and inhabitants of Higher Lithuania (Aukštaitija), the prevailing concept (evenamong Samogitians) was that Samogitians and Lithuanians "belonged to the same tribe", which later, at the end of the 19t h century, was defined as one nation. Nearing the 20t h century, the concept of Samogitians grew narrower and more specific. Eventually, at the beginning of the 20t h century linguists recognised Samogitians as a Lithuanian dialect group and ethnologists as one ofthe Lithuanian ethnographic groups and a distictive regional community. Samogitians were finally "downgraded" to an ethnographic group in the 20t h century. However, the process of "downgrading" started at the end ofthe 19t h century, with the swing ofthe Lithuanian national movement. The process of defining Samogitian ethnicity was a mere continuation of the new interpretation of Samogitians in the 19t h century and its final consolidation. The concept of Samogitians, as Lithuanians on the whole, gradually changed in official Russian administrative documents. While recognising the existence of different nationalities ofthe Lithuanian tribe - Lithuanian, Latvian and Samogitian - the term "Lithuanian-Samogitian language" emerges as of early 1880s. In the 1890s and at the very beginning of the 20t h century, on the threshold of abolishing the prohibition ofthe Lithuanian script, the term "litovskij narod" (Lithuanian people) or "Lithuanians of Vilniaus and Kaunas Guberniyas" and their language "litovskij jazyk" start dominating Tsarist administrative documents. Words to do with Samogitia and Samogitians grew rarer whilst defining the ethnicity of the people of Lithuania.

Straipsnio autorius, bando išsiaiškinti, kokį šalies plotą užima gyventojai, turintys žemaičių savimonę; kur yra žemaičiais save identifikuojančiųjų rytinė riba; ar ji sutampa su kalbininkų nustatytąja žemaičių ir aukštaičių dialektų skiriamąja riba. Straipsnyje remiamasi etnografinėse ekspedicijose surinktais duomenimis: 2002-2003 m. penkiasdešimtyje aukštaičių ir žemaičių tarmių paribio vietovių autorius interviu metodu apklausė apie 300 asmenų. Žemaičių saviidentifikacijoje dažniausiai minimas kriterijus – kitokia kalba. Žemaičių tarmės plotas per XX a. sumažėjo, o tai daro įtaką ir jų savimonei: daugėja vietinių gyventojų, gyvenančių etnografinės Žemaitijos teritorijoje, bet nelaikančių savęs žemaičiais. Aukštaitijos ir Žemaitijos regionų paribyje neretai vieno ir to paties kaimo gyventojai save identifikuoja skirtingai: vieni save laiko aukštaičiais, kiti žemaičiais, dar kiti nelaiko savęs nei vienais, nei kitais, o tik lietuviais. Gyventojų, save identifikuojančių žemaičiais, apgyventas plotas nesutampa su kartografuotu žemaičių tradicinės materialinės kultūros arealu, ir tik iš dalies sutampa su žemaičių tarmės plotu. Vyksta žemaičių asimiliacija, aukštaitėjimas arba „lietuvėjimas” atsisakant žemaitiškos savimonės. The author of the article tries to find out the answers to these questions: what area of the country do the residents with the consciousness of Lower Lithuanian cover; where is the eastern borderline of people who identifies themselves as Samogitians; does this borderline coincides the dividing line, defined by the linguists, between dialects of Lower and Upper Lithuanian. The article uses the data collected during the ethnographical expedition. During the year 2002-2003 the author interweaved about 300 people in fifty parts of the periphery of Upper and Lower Lithuanian dialects. Different language is a commonly-used criterion of Lower Lithuanians’ self-identification. The territory of Lower Lithuanian dialect decreased in the 20th century. This influences their consciousness: increases the number of local residents who live in the ethnographic territory of Lower Lithuania, but do not identifies themselves as Lower Lithuanians. Often residents of the same village in the periphery of Upper and Lower Lithuania identifies themselves differently: some identifies themselves as Upper Lithuanians; others believe that they are Lower Lithuanians. Moreover, there are people who do not attribute themselves neither to Upper nor Lower Lithuanians; they identify themselves just as Lithuanians. The territory of the residents, who identify themselves as Lower Lithuanians, does not coincide with the cartographic area of traditional material culture of Lower Lithuanians, and coincides with the territory of the Lower Lithuanian dialect only partly. The Lower Lithuanians deny their consciousness. The assimilation and becoming Upper Lithuanian or real Lithuanian proceeds.

Straipsnyje nagrinėjama, kuriai Lietuvos etnografinei sričiai (etnografiniam regionui) priskirtinas Vilnius ir jį supančios artimiausios teritorijos, turint galvoje etnologų aprobuotą, visuomenėje priimtą ir nusistovėjusį Lietuvos suskirstymą į keturias etnografines sritis (regionus): Aukštaitiją, Žemaitiją, Suvalkiją, Dzūkiją. Klausimas "Kuriems iš jų aš priklausau?" tapo aktualus ne tik žemaičiams, bet ir kitų etnografinių regionų bei didžiųjų Lietuvos miestų gyventojams, ypač regionų paribių gyventojams. Susidomėjimas regioninio identiteto tema plačiuosiuose visuomenės sluoksniuose yra aplenkęs tyrinėtojus, kurie turėtų duoti aiškesnį atsakymą į daugelį regioninės temos kontroversijų. Straipsnyje daroma išvada: Vilnius ir jo apylinkės yra dviejų etnografinių Lietuvos regionų - Aukštaitijos ir Dzūkijos - sandūroje. In the article the author analyses to which of the four Lithuanian ethnographic regions the Vilnius agglomeration and the surrounding vicinity can be assigned. There is no unanimous opinion in Lithuania on this question although interest in the boundaries of the regions has increased in society. Even in scientific linguistic and ethnographic literature, Vilnius is handled in two different ways: some assign this city to Aukštaitija, which is located to the north of Vilnius, while others to Dzūkija, which is located to the south of it. The difference in opinions arises due to the different criteria possible for the classification. The article attempts to explain the question by summarising the arguments of the linguists, ethnologists, historians, and geographers. The author comes to the conclusion that there are no grounds to extend ethnographic Dzūkija from Poland to Ignalina. After analysing a great deal of ethnographic and linguistic information and by taking into consideration the population's regional consciousness, it is revealed that Vilnius falls to the Aukštaitija ethnographic region but its southern suburbs can also be assigned to the Dzūkija ethnographic region. Nevertheless, while taking into consideration the fact that a mixed transitional zone, where we see a combination of ethnographic phenomena, has formed on the periphery of the aforementioned two regions, the author thinks that it is truer to uphold the opinion that Vilnius, the capital of Lithuania, is on the divide between the Aukštaitija and Dzūkija ethnographic regions. When a resolve eventually arises in Lithuania to establish regions within the boundaries of the ethnographic areas, the possibility of the city of Vilnius being declared a separate region would become irrejectable.

Straipsnyje analizuojamas aukštaitiškumas lietuviškosios tapatybės kontekste. Aptarus termino tapatybė suvokimą, keliamas pagrindinis straipsnio klausimas, kaip savo tapatybę suvokia patys aukštaičiai. Straipsnyje aiškinamasi, ar dabartiniai aukštaičiai (kaip ir žemaičiai, dzūkai ar suvalkiečiai) laikytini tik krašto gyventojais pagal gyvenamąją vietą, ar jie turi kultūrinę savimonę; ar ir senovėje aukštaičiai buvo tik geografinė sąvoka, ar egzistavo tam tikros tradicinės kultūros aukštaičių bendruomenė, kurios užimamas plotas su aukštaičių geografine prasme gyvenama teritorija galėjo ir nesutapti; ar egzistuoja ,,žemaitiškoji Aukštaitija“ ir t. t. The article looks into the features of Upper Lithuanian character in the context of Lithuanian identity. The discussion of the concept of identity is followed by the main issue of the article, namely, how the proper Upper Lithuanians perceive their identity. The article deals with whether modern Upper Lithuanians (similarly to Samogitians, dzūkai and suvalkiečiai) should be considered only inhabitants of the region or they possess cultural consciousness; whether in the old times the Upper Lithuanians also were only a geographical concept or a community of Upper Lithuanians of a certain traditional culture existed, the area of which did not necessarily coincide with the territory geographically inhabited by the Upper Lithuanians; whether the Samogitian Upper Lithuania exists etc.

Straipsnyje autorius svarsto, ar esama neotribalizmo apraiškų Lietuvoje? Kai kurie Lietuvos autoriai neotribalizmo skatinimo apraiškas įžvelgia „Žiemgalos“ draugijos veikloje. Autorius laikosi nuomonės, kad gryna forma tokių reiškinių nėra, tad ir neotribalizmo kaip reiškinio konstatavimas čia yra pritemptas. Nors šiaurės vakarų aukštaičiai pagal tam tikrus atsekamus požymius yra patyrę senovės žiemgalių, išnykusių viduramžiais, įtaką, dabartiniai Žiemgalos regiono gyventojai save laiko aukštaičių tarme kalbančiais lietuviais. Žiemgalos ir žiemgalių klausimas šiandien aktualinamas tik kaip senovėje čia gyvenusios genties istorijos ir kultūros gerbimas, tyrinėjimas, archeologinio paveldo vertės pripažinimas ir tos vertės apmąstymas. „Žiemgalos“ draugija ir pavieniai jos nariai veikia kaip jaučiantys priedermę ir turintys moralinę teisę savo gimtojo krašto istoriją gerbti, žiemgalių kultūrinį paveldą vertinti ir propaguoti, saugoti jų kultūros ženklus. „Žiemgalos“ draugija, skirtingai negu kai kurios kitos panašios draugijos Lietuvoje, nekelia reikalavimų žymėti senovės Žiemgalos etnografines ribas, ir tuo naudojantis pradėti šalies administraciniame centre kelti bylą dėl jų savivaldos regionų sukūrimo. Kartu autorius mano, kad senovės žiemgalių kultūros paveldo palikimas nesukuria jokių prielaidų šios Lietuvos dalies aukštaičiams vadintis nei žiemgaliais, nei „žiemgalininkais“. The article discusses are there any manifestations of neotribalism in Lithuania. Some of the Lithuanian authors see manifestations of incentive of neotribalism in the activity of association “Žiemgala” (Semegallia). The author thinks that there are no such phenomena which would have all features of neotribalism, therefore, the statement of neotribalism as a phenomenon is appropriate just in few aspects. Current residents of Semegallia believe themselves to be Lithuanians who speak Upper Lithuanian dialect though north-western Upper Lithuanians had experienced the impact of ancient Semegallians, extinct in the Middle Ages. The problem of Semegallia and Semegallians recently is up-to-dated just as homage and research of the history and culture of the ancient tribe which lived here, as well as the recognition of the archaeological heritage value and the contemplation of this value. The association “Žiemgala” and individual members of it act like if they are under the obligation to respect the history of the native land, to appreciate and propagate the cultural heritage of the Semegallians, to protect the cultural symbols of this tribe. They feel like they have moral right for that. The association “Žiemgala” does not raise the claims to mark the ethnographic borderlines of ancient Semegallia, and under this to start to bring a suit for the composition of their autonomy regions in the country’s administrative centre. Moreover, the author believes that cultural heritage of ancient Semegallians does not generate any assumptions for the Upper Lithuanians in this part of the country to be called neither Semegallians, nor žiemgalinikai.

Straipsnyje autorius analizuoja pastaraisiais metais Lietuvoje aktyviai keltas ir formuluotas idėjas, kaip apsaugoti lietuvių etnografinių grupių (žemaičių, aukštaičių, dzūkų, suvalkiečių ir lietuvininkų) tradicinę kultūrą. Tyrimo objektu pasirinkti moksliniuose straipsniuose, periodinėje spaudoje skelbti dokumentai, kultūrinių organizacijų, tyrinėtojų, politikų pasisakymai, kuriuose kalbama apie būtinumą arba galimybes lokalinių kultūrų apsaugą susieti su radikalia Lietuvos teritorine administracine reforma, kurios esmė – valstybės federalizavimas. Suinteresuotos grupės Lietuvos regionų bendruomenes pradėjo traktuoti kaip atskirus etninius vienetus. Straipsnyje daroma išvada, kad savivaldos regionai etnografinių sričių ribose neteiktini dėl Lietuvos valdymo unitarinės tradicijos, jos dabartinės geopolitinės padėties, lietuvių etnografinių grupių tamprios konsolidacijos į lietuvių naciją, ir dėl to, kad Lietuvos valstybė į savo teritoriją nėra inkorporavusi jokių autochtoninių tautinių mažumų. Etnografinių regionų savitumą autorius siūlo apsaugoti plėtojant bei reformuojant kultūros politiką ir užtikrinant tradicinių subkultūrų pliuralizmą, į kasdieninio gyvenimo apyvartą įtraukiant etnografinių regionų tradicinę kultūrą The author of the article analyses ideas that have recently been actively raised up and formulated in Lithuania on how to protect the traditional culture of Lithuanian ethnographic groups (dwellers of Žemaitija, Aukštaitija, Dzūkija, Suvalkija and Prussia). The author chose as an object of research documents published in scientific publications and periodical press and speeches of representatives of cultural organizations, researchers, and politicians that focus on the necessity or possibilities of the connection of the protection of local culture with a radical Lithuanian territorial administrative reform based on state federalization. Interested groups started to treat Lithuanian regional communities as independent ethnic units. The article comes to the conclusion that self-governing regions within the limits of ethnographic spheres are not acceptable due to the unitary management tradition of Lithuania, its current geopolitical situation, strong consolidation of Lithuanian ethnographic groups into the Lithuanian nation, and due to the fact that the Lithuanian state has not incorporated any autochthon national minorities in its territory. The author offers to protect the individuality of ethnographic regions with the help of the development and reformation of cultural politics and ensuring the pluralism of traditional sub-cultures as well as involving the traditional culture of ethnographic regions into the circulation of everyday life.

Straipsnyje autorius nagrinėja keturių Lietuvos etnografinių regionų (Aukštaitijos, Žemaitijos, Dzūkijos, Suvalkijos) gyventojų, išsiskiriančių savo tarmėmis ir turinčių savitų liaudiškosios kultūros bruožų, autostereotipus ir heterostereotipus. Naudojamasi istorinių šaltinių, literatūros, ilgamečio asmeninio stebėjimo, anketinės apklausos duomenimis bei lietuvių liaudies folklore aptinkamais vieni kitų apibūdinimais. Ryškiausiai stereotipizuojami žemaičiai ir suvalkiečiai. Vertindami labiausiai savo tarme bei tradicinės kultūros bruožais išsiskiriančius žemaičius, gyvenančius vakarinėje Lietuvos dalyje, kitų regionų lietuviai visuotinai priėmė istoriniuose šaltiniuose randamą šios bendruomenės, kaip labai užsispyrusios, konservatyvios stereotipą. Iš šios žemaičiams pripažįstamos ypatybės yra suformuluoti tokie jų stereotipai kaip drąsa, narsumas, didesnis siekimas ginti savo tapatybę. Kitų regionų lietuviai, visuotinai pripažindami Suvalkijos gyventojų perdėtą šykštumą, kartu mano, jog kartu tai yra ir gana teigiamas jų bruožas, ekonomiškumas gerąja prasme ir manoma, kad šis bruožas nulemia didesnį suvalkiečių racionalesnį ūkininkavimą, tvarkingumą ir darbštumą. Labai svarbų vaidmenį apibrėžiant „savųjų” ratą vaidina tarmės ypatybės. Dabartinėse Lietuvoje regioninėse grupėse funkcionuojantys stereotipai nerodo tarp jų esančio kokio nors antagonizmo. Tačiau pastaruoju metu tarp žemaičių kultūrinio elito ima ryškėti atskiros nuomonės, jog žemaičių bendruomenė nėra lygiateisėje padėtyje su kitais. Tai daro tam tikrą įtaką ir dabartinių Lietuvos regioninių grupių tarpusavio vertinimui. In the article the author analyses the autostereotypes and heterostereotypes of residents from four ethnographic areas of Lithuania (Aukštaitija, Samogitia, Dzūkija, Sudovia) distinctive by their dialects, and having specific features of folk culture. Data from historical sources, literature, long-term personal monitoring, questionnaires and surveys, and descriptions about each other found in Lithuanian folklore are used. The most distinctive stereotypes were noted for Samogitians and Sudovians. By assessing Samogitians living in the western part of the country whose dialect and cultural features are the most different, Lithuanians from other areas have universally adopted the stereotype of this community found in historical sources as a very stubborn and conservative community. This feature attributed to Samogitians is a source of their other stereotypes such as courage, brave spirit, stronger strives for defending their identity. Lithuanians from other areas, admitting the excessive avarice of Sudovians, also consider this to be a rather positive feature, the cost saving in a good sense. It is considered that this feature determines the advanced economic skills of Sudovians, their orderliness and diligence. Very important role by defining the circle of “us” is played by a dialect. Stereotypes functioning in the current regional groups of Lithuania do not indicate any antagonism between the dialects. But recently individual opinions have emerged among the cultural elite of Samogitians maintaining that the Samogitian community does not enjoy equal rights with others. This certainly affects the mutual assessment of other regional groups of Lithuania.
