Abstract: Plasmonic effects of various sized Al nanospheres non-embedded on Ta2O5 antireflective–coated single-junction GaAs solar cells are analyzed by finite difference time domain (FDTD) simulations. The impact of optimized plasmonic nanoparticles is further analyzed for embedded Al nanospheres in GaAs and compared with nanoparticles at back contact. It is found that the nanoparticles of radius 30 nm show superior spectral response in comparison with other radii for non-embedded design. Further, non-embedded optimized nanoparticles show better spectral response when embedded in GaAs layer 10 nm below the Ta2O5 antireflection layer, which yields a maximum current density of 28.17 mA/cm2. Moreover, photovoltaic current–voltage characteristics were studied to confirm the performance enhancement induced by Al nanoparticle plasmons. The power conversion efficiency enhancement of 5.4, 11.5, and 2.3% for optimized radius of 30 nm in non-embedded, embedded (at optimized depth of 10 nm), and at rear surface, respectively, were found compared to Ta2O5-coated single-junction GaAs solar cells. Abstract: Light trapping is a crucial factor to improve the photocurrent response in thin film solar cells. In this paper, a light trapping scheme is demonstrated by placing Ag nanocylinders on the rear surface of thin film GaAs solar cells. Finite difference time domain (FDTD) numerical simulations were used for parametric optimization of rear-located Ag nanocylinders. The results reveal that the radius, height and period of nanocylinders play crucial role in photocurrent enhancement. The maximum photocurrent of 19.47mA/cm2 is obtained for nanocylinders with radius 30nm, height 90nm and period 80nm. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: It is believed that the effectual scattering by earth-abundant Al nanoparticles in combination with photoelectric conversion-efficient GaAs material may help for cost-effective solar cells. Al nanoparticles of various radii embedded at different depths in a Ta2O5-coated GaAs semiconductor have been studied by finite-difference time-domain method for their influence towards spectral absorption rate and photocurrent in GaAs solar cells. The calculated spectral absorption rate and photocurrent show a significant enhancement at the optimal depth for a particular radius of Al nanoparticles, which is explained on the basis of surface plasmon resonance. Al nanoparticles of radius 80 nm embedded just below the antireflection layer of Ta2O5 result a maximum spectral absorption rate of 0.95 that leads to a photocurrent of 30.43 mA/cm2. Abstract: The effects of single and double layer antireflection coatings on the performance of thin film GaAs solar cells are investigated by finite difference time domain (FDTD) numerical simulation method. The reflection and short circuit current density of thin film GaAs solar cells are calculated over the wavelength range from 400 to 900nm. Results show that the reflectivity can be greatly reduced using single and double layer antireflection coatings. The current density attains a maximum value of 25.25mA/cm² for double layer antireflection coatings of MgF2 / TiO2 while for single layer antireflection coating of Ta2O5 it attains a value of 23.85mA/cm². Abstract: In this paper, a structure is proposed consisting of Al nanoparticle array, thin GaAs layer and silicon dioxide as back reflector. The finite difference time domain (FDTD) numerical simulation method was used to calculate optical absorption and current density of thin film GaAs solar cells having Al nanoparticle array. By optimizing the radius and period of Al nanoparticles to maximize plasmonic scattering effect, a significant enhancement in optical absorption and current density is achieved. Simulation results show that average absorption was enhanced by 28% and current density integrated over solar spectrum by 29% as compared to bare GaAs solar cells at optimized radius of 80nm and period 300nm.
