In British Columbia (BC), there are challenges accessing specialized spinal cord injury care and resources. This paper evaluated the impact of spinal cord injury health educational workshops delivered in regional communities that were informed by persons with lived experience. A community survey was conducted with 44 persons with lived experience in a BC region to identify priority SCI health-related topics. Twenty-five topics were ranked from 1–14, with bowel and bladder management ranked 1 and 4, sexual health ranked 5, and pressure injuries ranked 7. Clinical perspectives on the priorities were collected from 102 clinicians in the BC region, who independently ranked 14 of these SCI topics and considered the former 4 topics to be lower clinical priority (ranked 11–14). These priorities informed a series of SCI clinical education workshops held at healthcare facilities in three regional cities. The goals were to improve clinicians' knowledge and confidence levels when managing spinal cord injury health and to facilitate person-centred care. Positive feedback demonstrated that educational workshops supported by lived experience perspectives effectively enhanced the clinicians' understanding of spinal cord injury and their priorities. Food insecurity is widely documented among people living with HIV (PLWH) worldwide, and it presents significant challenges across the spectrum of HIV care and support. In North America, the prevalence of food insecurity among PLWH exceeds 50%. In the province of British Columbia (BC), it exceeds 65%. It comes as no surprise that food has become an essential tool in supporting and engaging with PLWH. Over the past decade, however, a shift has taken place, and food has become an incentive to boost uptake and outcomes of prevention, testing, treatment, and support. To explore this practice, we drew on a qualitative case study of incentives in the care and support of PLWH. This paper presents the findings of a targeted analysis of interviews (N = 25) that discuss food incentives and explores two main themes that shed light on this practice: (1) Using food to engage versus to incentivize and (2) Food is more beneficial and more ethical. Providers perceived food more positively than other incentives, despite the goal remaining somewhat the same. Incentives, such as cash or gift cards, were considered ethically problematic and less helpful (and potentially harmful), whereas food addressed a basic need and felt more ethical. Introduction: In many jurisdictions internationally, distributed networks of clinical care have emerged as a planning principle to meet the needs of rural communities. Such networks rely on productive relationships between small rural sites and larger regional centres as the mechanism for training and backup and as the pathways for transfer when triage to a higher level of care is required. This paper explores the impact of the Rural Surgical Obstetrical Network (RSON) initiative on regional relationships between networked sites in order to provide data on the efficacy of networked models of healthcare. Implementation of networked care may ultimately lead to better patient care. Methods: This qualitative study involved interviews and focus groups over 4 years with 169 rural healthcare workers and hospital administrators at different RSON sites. Data was analysed inductively using thematic analysis. Results: Findings revealed three primary areas considered in the context of RSON funding: improved relationships (primarily through clinical coaching and the consequent building of reciprocal trust) and increased regional coordination of patient care through more efficient triage pathways and increased involvement of specialists through outreach care in rural communities. Continued lack of engagement with regional specialists was reported by a minority of participants. Discussion: RSON provided a supportive infrastructure that benefitted both rural and regional services namely through funding for clinical coaching and quality improvement initiatives which enabled overall improved provider relationships between sites. Background. Self-awareness is seldom formally assessed by occupational therapists among individuals with traumatic brain injury (TBI). However, impaired self-awareness is prevalent and has a significant impact on rehabilitation outcomes. There is a need to understand clinician perspectives on self-awareness assessments and promote evidence-based practice in clinical settings. Aims. (1) Explore how an education session impacts knowledge and use of self-awareness assessments in occupational therapists working with people with TBI; (2) Understand the barriers that occupational therapists experience when assessing self-awareness in clinical practice. Materials and Methods. A single-group pre-post session design with an integrated knowledge translation approach was used. Occupational therapists working in neurorehabilitation were recruited from two rehabilitation centres through convenience sampling. Participants completed questionnaires before, after, and three months following an education session about the Self-Awareness of Deficits (SADI) assessment. Results. 14 occupational therapists participated in this study. A statistically significant increase in knowledge and confidence in using the SADI was observed both post-session and at 3-month follow-up. Conclusion. Targeted and ongoing education promotes confidence and knowledge retention among occupational therapists. Further research should explore strategies to promote behaviour change. Significance. Background: Care aides (certified nursing assistants, personal support workers) are the largest workforce in long‐term care (LTC) homes (nursing homes). They provide as much as 90% of direct care to residents. Their health and well‐being directly affect both quality of care and quality of life for residents. The aim of this study was to understand the impact of COVID‐19 on care aides working in LTC homes during the first year of the pandemic. Methods: We conducted semi‐structured interviews with a convenience sample of 52 care aides from 8 LTC homes in Alberta and one in British Columbia, Canada, between January and April 2021. Nursing homes were purposively selected across: (1) ownership model and (2) COVID impact (the rate of COVID infections reported from March to December 2020). Interviews were recorded and analyzed using inductive content analysis. Results: Care aides were mainly female (94%) and older (74% aged 40 years or older). Most spoke English as an additional language (76%), 54% worked full‐time in LTC homes, and 37% worked multiple positions before "one worksite policies" were implemented. Two themes emerged from our analysis: (1) Care aides experienced mental and emotional distress from enforcing resident isolation, grief related to resident deaths, fear of contracting and spreading COVID‐19, increased workload combined with staffing shortages, and rapidly changing policies. (2) Care aides' resilience was supported by their strong relationships, faith and community, and capacity to maintain positive attitudes. Conclusions: These findings suggest significant, ongoing adverse effects for care aides in LTC homes from working through the COVID‐19 pandemic. Our data demonstrate the considerable strength of this occupational group. Our results emphasize the urgent need to appropriately and meaningfully support care aides' mental health and well‐being and adequately resource this workforce. Background: 'Syndemic' refers to socially produced, intertwined, and co-occurring epidemics. Syndemic theory is increasingly used to understand the population-level relationships between sexual health (including HIV) and mental health (including problematic substance use) epidemics. Syndemic-informed clinical interventions are rare.Methods: We therefore asked 22 sexual health practitioners from six sexual health clinics in British Columbia, Canada to define the word 'syndemic' and then asked how the theory related to their clinical practice.Results: Responses to syndemic theory ranged widely, with some practitioners providing nuanced and clinically informed definitions, others expressing a vague familiarity with the term, and others still having no prior knowledge of it. Where practitioners acknowledged the relevance of syndemic theory to their practice, they articulated specific ways in which syndemics create moral distress, that is, feeling that the most ethical course of action is different from what they are mandated to do. While some practitioners routinely used open-ended questions to understand the social and economic contexts of patients' sexual health needs, they described an uneasiness at potentially having surfaced concerns that could not be addressed in the sexual health clinic. Many observed persistent social, mental health, and substance use-related needs among their patients, but were unable to find feasible solutions to these issues.Conclusions: We therefore propose that interventions are needed to support sexual health practitioners in addressing psychosocial health needs that extend beyond their scope of practice, thereby reducing 'syndemic moral distress'. INTRODUCTION: Behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD) influence older persons' quality of life (QoL). Non-pharmacological interventions such as individualized music (iM) is promising to mitigate BPSD. PURPOSE: To assess the impact of iM activity on affect, BPSD, QoL and antipsychotics administration of older persons with dementia living in residential care facilities and to understand residents, families and staff experiences in the use of iM activity. METHODS: We conducted a pilot study in one residential care facility in British Columbia, Canada and implemented a predetermined intervention of iM activities for older persons diagnosed with mild to moderate dementia. We collected data at baseline and follow-up via observations, surveys, and interviews. RESULTS: We observed an increase of emotions/ affect during and immediately after the iM intervention. Most participants improved QoL dimensions, while use of medications was mainly unchanged. Participants expressed lasting effects of music on residents' QoL and reduction of BPSD after the iM intervention; they suggested sustainability and continuous use of music activities. CONCLUSION: Individualized music activities may reduce BPSD and positively affect emotions, behavior and well-being of institutionalized older persons with dementia. Awareness of music effects can support continuous use and longer sessions of iM activities for sustainability of results. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
