Interprofessional education (IPE) is vital for preparing a competent health workforce. Despite the proven benefits of interprofessional collaborative practice (IPCP), barriers to its implementation persist. Given the importance of health professionals' perspectives for IPCP success, we investigated the perceptions of IPCP among final-year health science students at Khon Kaen University, Thailand, while they transition into practice. A cross-sectional online survey conducted from February to April 2023 included 989 students across six health science disciplines, with a response rate of 57.8%. Using the SPICE-R2 questionnaire on a five-point Likert-type scale, we assessed perceptions related to interprofessional teamwork, roles and responsibilities, and patient outcomes. Results showed significant diversity in IPCP perceptions and experiences with IPE. Nursing students consistently demonstrated the highest IPCP perceptions, while medical and public health students scored the lowest. Positive perceptions about IPCP were notably associated with nursing students and those satisfied with the learning process. Dentistry students and those with IPE experience also exhibited more favorable views on teamwork. This study suggests the need to address disparities in IPCP perceptions among student groups, which is essential for enhancing interprofessional collaboration in future health professionals.

Objectives: The interruption to clinical professions' instruction due to closures from the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic posed a significant hurdle to clinical education and presented a necessity to shift how instruction was delivered to resume educational activities. This study sought to answer the research question: did the transition from in-person to virtual instruction for interprofessional education (IPE) have an impact on students' perceptions of team attitudes and skills to learn and work in interprofessional groups?, Methods: All participating first-year dental and second-year dental hygiene students enrolled in the campus-wide IPE course were invited to complete the Team Skills Scale (TSS) assessment before and after the course for two academic years 2019-2020 and 2020-2021. Paired t-tests were utilized to assess the change in student attitudes and skills from pre- to post-course assessment, and t-tests were used to assess mean differences between student cohorts 2019-2020 and 2020-2021., Results: Within the student cohort 2019-2020 students reported significant improvement in all TSS items. Within the student cohort, 2020-2021 students reported significant improvement in all but three TSS items. There were only significant differences in mean values for student reported improvement in attitudes and skills for two TSS items between the 2019-2020 and 2020-2021 cohorts., Conclusions: Dental and dental hygiene students report significant improvement in team attitudes and skills after participation in a campus-wide IPE course. Introduction: Interprofessional education is a process designed to facilitate knowledge exchange between healthcare professionals with the aim of improving learning, collaboration, and patient care. It helsps students gain a better understanding of communication, teamwork, and each profession's role. This study aims to examine Saudi undergraduate nursing students' attitudes and readiness for engagement in high-fidelity simulation interprofessional education and practice after training nurse educators in HFS., Methodology: A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted among 311 nursing students. The process of sampling was done by convenience and was not probabilistic. Participants were asked to complete a self-administered questionnaire. The survey included demographic information as well as the Readiness for Interprofessional Learning Scale., Results: There was a positive attitude toward Interprofessional education among nursing students and a reasonable level of readiness. The Readiness for Interprofessional Learning Scale score was significantly associated with academic years (p ≤ 0.05)., Conclusion: Nursing students have a positive attitude towards interprofessional education and are willing to engage in high-fidelity simulation activities. Purpose Health care professionals (HCPs) working collaboratively can improve patient outcomes and also increase their understanding of each other's professional roles. This descriptive study aimed to explore dental hygienists' perceptions of collaboration with dentists and intraprofessional educational (IntraPE) experiences. Methods A convenience sampling method was used to assess DHs perceptions of collaboration with dentists using the Interprofessional Collaboration Scale (ICS), a validated scale that measures perceptions of communication, accommodation, and isolation among HCPs. One open-ended question was added to explore IntraPE. Demographics, work characteristics and responses from the ICS were analyzed using frequency, mean, standard deviation, Pearson's correlation, t-test, ANOVA, and multivariable regression. Responses from the open-ended question were transcribed, organized, and coded. Themes were identified using the Delve Qualitative Analysis Tool. Results Of the 264 participants, the average age was 38.9, and most identified as female (98.9%). Data analysis revealed that DHs had positive perceptions of collaboration with dentists. Significant relationships were found between ICS factor accommodation and the average number of patients treated per day (r s = -0.242, p <0.001), dentists' age (r s = -.145, p <0.05). Isolation showed a significant negative correlation with the average number of patients treated per day (r s = -0.156, p <0.05). Most reported having no opportunities for IntraPE education experiences with dentists. Five categories of themes were identified from the open-ended question: shared academic setting, clinic dentist, externships, desire for more shared learning, and shared patient experiences. Conclusion Dental hygienists in this study had an overall more positive than negative perception of collaboration with dentists. Background: Interprofessional teamwork improves patient care quality, safety, and health outcomes. Interprofessional education (IPE) is crucial in today's medical education to prepare students for the workforce as integral members of a collaborative team. The diversity of IPE learners indicates the importance of exploring the relationship between learning styles and attitudes toward IPE. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between learning styles and attitudes toward IPE., Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted between August 2023 and September 2023 in 49 colleges located in the south-eastern region of China. A convenience sampling approach was employed, selecting 500 students majoring in Clinical Medicine and Nursing. The students completed an online questionnaire, which included sociodemographic characteristics, educational characteristics, interprofessional educational characteristics, learning styles, and the readiness for interprofessional learning scale, and Kolb's learning style inventory. Descriptive statistics, Spearman's correlation, and multiple linear regression analysis were used to analyze the data., Results: The most learners are diverger (93.2%), followed by assimilator (3.4%), accommodator (2.6%), and Converger (0.8%). The total score on the RIPLS was 69.70 (7.42), ranging from 48 to 88. A statistical relationship could be established between learning styles and attitudes toward IPE., Conclusion: Abstract conceptualization and active experimentation learning modes and convergers were closely linked with positive attitudes toward IPE. Gender, age, and study stress can affect attitudes toward IPE. This study highlights the need for medical education curricula to integrate innovative teaching methods such as PBL, role-playing, scenario simulation and clinical early exposure to strengthen professional identity, and improve abilities related to interprofessional learning., (© 2024. The COVID-19 pandemic has posed unprecedented challenges with its impact on patient safety culture and staff well-being. This study was to identify potential changes in safety culture among health care workers from before to during the COVID-19 pandemic, and to determine the differences across occupational groups. The Safety Attitudes Questionnaire (SAQ) was administered electronically in both English and Malay languages using the Google Forms platform in 2018 and was repeated in 2021, during the COVID-19 pandemic. Comparisons were made between 2018 and 2021 to determine changes in patient safety culture for the overall staff population and by occupational groups. A total of 3175 health care workers completed the questionnaire in 2021. Overall, a comparable percentage agreement was found for all SAQ domains in 2018 and 2021 with visible improvements for doctors and support staff. Safety Attitudes Questionnaire domain scores differed in teamwork, safety climate, perception of hospital management, and working condition domains across occupational groups. Self-isolation and COVID-19 were associated with poorer SAQ domain scores, while redeployment was associated with improvements in SAQ domain scores. Introduction: To promote effective interprofessional collaboration (IPC), it is crucial to understand the attitudes of healthcare workers towards IPC and identify any barriers they may face. This is particularly important in the radiography profession where IPC is vital for providing holistic care and ensuring radiation protection and safety. However, there is limited research available on the attitudes and barriers to IPC specifically among radiographers. Therefore, this study aimed to assess the attitudes and barriers to IPC among radiographers from multiple countries., Methods: A quantitative descriptive cross-sectional online survey was conducted using the adapted attitudes toward healthcare teams scale (ATHCT) and barriers scale towards IPC. Data analysis was performed using descriptive statistics, Wilcoxon rank-sum, Kruskal-Wallis tests, and exploratory factor analysis., Results: A total of 233 radiographers across the globe participated in this survey. The study found that the overall mean score on the ATHCT scale was 54.68 (SD = 5.75). Although not statistically significant, radiographers with over 15 years of experience tended to strongly agree with all the statements, indicating a more positive attitude towards IPC. The study also identified three subscales related to IPC: quality of care, team efficiency, and time constraint. The top three barriers to IPC reported by radiographers include i. a lack of clearly defined, shared, and measurable purpose, ii. poor communication, and iii. a lack of commitment from team members., Conclusions: The findings highlight the need for interventions and programs that promote effective communication and establish a shared vision among healthcare team members., (Copyright © 2024. Interprofessional collaboration leads to better health outcomes. Measuring attitudes related to interprofessional collaboration is not a simple task, and in Brazil, there are few instruments for this evaluation. This study aimed to evaluate the evidence of validity and reliability of the Brazilian Portuguese version of the Jefferson Scale of Attitudes Toward Interprofessional Collaboration in a population of undergraduate healthcare students. It included 108 undergraduates from medicine, nursing, physiotherapy, dentistry, pharmacy, psychology, and physical education academic programmes. The median age was 22 (18 and 58) and 75% were females. The scale comprises 20 items divided into two domains: working relationships, consisting of 12 items, and accountability, consisting of 8 items. The instrument showed good reliability (Cronbach's alpha = 0.77, 95% CI 0.71-0.83) and no item was considered inconsistent in improving the scale significantly. The scale demonstrated good evidence of validity and reliability for application among a population of Brazilian healthcare students.

Background: Health policymakers have tried to improve the care pathway for cancer patients by improving collaboration between participating healthcare professionals by involving the general practitioner (GP)., Objective(s): To explore how patients, GPs, oncologists and nurses interacted and how they perceived, in their practice, professional roles, collaboration, and cancer care pathways., Methods: Between January 2018 and December 2021, we conducted a qualitative study that combined phenomenology and a general inductive analysis, based on semi-structured interviews with cancer patients and their GPs, oncologists, and nurses in France., Results: Our analysis of 59 interviews showed that the stakeholders had different perceptions of the cancer care pathway. Task division was implicit and depended on what each health professional thought he/she should be doing; this led to the blurring of certain tasks (announcement of the diagnosis, coordination, and follow-up). The healthcare professionals were stuck in frameworks centred on their own needs and expectations and were unaware of the other health professionals' needs and expectations. Outside the hospital, GPs and nurses worked in isolation; they were not aware of the other stakeholders and did not communicate with them. GPs and nurses justified this attitude by the lack of a perceived need. Interprofessional communication varied as a function of the needs, involvement and knowledge of the other health professionals and was often mediated by the patient., Conclusion: In the cancer management in France, to improve cancer care pathway, there is a need to train healthcare professionals in interprofessional collaboration delivering care tailored to patient needs and preferences.

Background: Interprofessional collaboration involves coordinated efforts by individuals from different professions. Trust is defined as an individual's willingness to be vulnerable within a relationship, while expecting the other party to act in their best interests. This study aimed to assess the attitudes of collaboration and trust among dental and medical professionals in Saudi Arabia., Materials and Methods: This cross-sectional study evaluated the attitudes of collaboration and trust among dental and medical professionals in Saudi Arabia using an online self-reported questionnaire distributed via social media. Data analysis was performed using SPSS., Results: The overall mean score for collaborative attitude was 6.2 (SD  =  1.52), with 69.23% of participants exhibiting a positive attitude about collaboration. Participants rated family medicine (76.67%) and pediatric medicine (76.41%) as the medical specialties most relevant to dentistry, while obstetrics/gynecology was rated the lowest (32.31%). Dental professionals had a significantly higher mean score for collaborative attitude (m  =  6.46, SD  =  1.48) than did medical professionals (m  =  5.93, SD  =  1.51; p < 0.001). The score for dental professionals' trust in medical professionals (DTM) (m  =  36.94, SD  =  8.06) was significantly higher (p < 0.001) than the score for medical professionals' trust in dental professionals (MTD) (m  =  33.81, SD  =  8.20). The collaborative attitude scores among dental and medical professionals were not statistically significant when tested against the MTD score (p  =  0.777) and DTM score (p  =  0.419)., Conclusions: There is a high level of collaborative attitude and trust between dental and medical professionals in Saudi Arabia. Dentists exhibit a higher degree of these attributes than medical professionals. Background: In 2018, the Dutch government initiated the Solid Start program to provide each child with the best start in life. Key program elements are a biopsychosocial perspective on pregnancy and children's development and stimulating local collaborations between social and health domains, with a specific focus on (future) families in vulnerable situations. Two programs for interprofessional collaboration between maternity and social care professionals to optimize care for pregnant women in vulnerable situations were developed and implemented, in Groningen in 2017 and in South Limburg in 2021. This paper describes the extent of implementation of these programs and the perceptions of involved professionals about determinants that influence program implementation., Methods: We conducted a mixed-methods study in 2021 and 2022 in two Dutch regions, Groningen and South Limburg. Questionnaires were sent to primary care midwives, hospital-based midwives, obstetricians (i.e. maternity care professionals), (coordinating) youth health care nurses and social workers (i.e. social care professionals), involved in the execution of the programs. Semi-structured interviews were held with involved professionals to enrich the quantitative data. Quantitative and qualitative data were collected and analyzed using Fleuren's implementation model., Results: The findings of the questionnaire (n = 60) and interviews (n = 28) indicate that professionals in both regions are generally positive about the implemented programs. However, there was limited knowledge and use of the program in Groningen. Promoting factors for implementation were mentioned on the determinants for the innovation and the user. Maternity care professionals prefer a general, conversational way to identify vulnerabilities that connects to midwives' daily practice. Low-threshold, personal contact with clear agreements for referral and consultation between professionals contributes to implementation. Professionals agree that properly identifying vulnerabilities and referring women to appropriate care is an important task and contributes to better care. On the determinants of the organization, professionals indicate some preconditions for successful implementation, such as clearly described roles and responsibilities, interprofessional training, time and financial resources., Conclusions: Areas for improvement for the implementation of interprofessional collaboration between maternity care and social care focus mainly on determinants of the organization, which should be addressed both regionally and nationally. Background: Nurse practitioner (NP) faculty attitudes toward interprofessional education (IPE) can be barriers to the shift in culture and successful implementation of IPE into nursing curricula. A paucity of studies exist comparing faculty attitudes of IPE with different educational modalities., Purpose: The purpose of this research is to compare NP faculty attitudes toward IPE between IPE experiences and educational modalities in NP academic programs., Methodology: A quantitative cross-sectional comparative design was used. An electronic survey was advertised to approximately 3,000 members of the National Organization of NP Faculties by email blasts to assess their attitudes toward IPE in the academic setting., Results: Participating NP faculty ( n = 208) completed the survey, with a response rate of 6.9%. The results showed that NP faculty reported positive attitudes toward IPE ( M = 4.33). Nurse practitioner faculty attitudes toward IPE and participation in IPE experiences were not statistically significant ( p = .126). Nurse practitioner faculty attitudes toward IPE did not differ with the educational modality. Background: Collaboration between physicians and pharmacists facilitates the conduct of medication optimisation efforts. In the context of deprescribing, pharmacists' roles are often described as making deprescribing recommendations to physicians. Little is known about factors associated with pharmacists' willingness to make deprescribing recommendations and their interprofessional collaboration with physicians in Swiss primary care settings., Objective: To explore pharmacists' perspectives on medication optimisation and deprescribing in older adults, and their preferences for interprofessional collaboration in Swiss primary care settings., Methods: In this cross-sectional study, a random sample of 1000 pharmacist members of the Swiss Pharmacists Association pharmaSuisse was invited to participate in a survey on medication optimisation, deprescribing, and interprofessional collaboration. The survey contained three case vignettes of multimorbid patients with polypharmacy aged ≥ 80 years old, with different levels of dependency in activities in daily living (ADL) and cardiovascular disease (CVD). For each case vignette, pharmacists were asked if and which medications they would deprescribe. We calculated proportions of pharmacists' willingness to deprescribe by case vignette and performed a multilevel logistic regression to assess associations between CVD, ADL, and willingness to deprescribe., Results: One hundred thirty-eight (14%) pharmacists responded to the survey: 113 (82%) were female, their mean age was 44 years (SD = 11), and 66% (n = 77) reported having never received any specific training on how to conduct structured medication reviews. Eighty-three (72%) pharmacists reported to be confident in identifying deprescribing opportunities. All pharmacists were willing to deprescribe ≥ 1 medication in all vignettes. Patients with CVD were at lower odds of having medications deprescribed (OR = 0.27, 95%CI 0.21 to 0.36). Willingness to deprescribe was lower with higher dependency in ADL (medium versus low dependency: OR = 0.68, 95%CI 0.54 to 0.87, high versus low dependency: OR = 0.72, 95%CI 0.56 to 0.91). However, the effect of dependency in ADL on willingness to deprescribe was significantly modified by the history of CVD. One hundred five pharmacists (97%) reported to interact with physicians to clarify questions regarding prescriptions at least once a week and 88 (81%) wished to be more involved in deprescribing and medication review., Conclusion: Pharmacists were willing to make deprescribing suggestions for older patients with polypharmacy, but two-thirds reported having received no formal training on how to perform structured medication reviews. Background: Interprofessional education (IPE) is essential to foster collaboration among healthcare professionals for holistic patient care. However, Malaysian dental education remains discipline-centric, hindering multidisciplinary learning approaches. Hence, this study aimed to explore Malaysian undergraduate dental students' perceptions of IPE., Methods: The present cross-sectional study employed convenience sampling to survey undergraduate dental students from four Malaysian institutions using a modified questionnaire with 20 close-ended and 2 open-ended questions. The questionnaire covered three domains (effectiveness, preference, importance) to assess students' perceptions using a five-point Likert scale. Psychometric validation was performed to assure validity and reliability of the modified questionnaire. Quantitative analysis (descriptive and inferential statistics), and qualitative analysis (content analysis) were subsequently performed., Results: 397 students responded, and positive perceptions were generally noted with mean scores ranging from 4.13 to 4.35 across all domains. Questions 2 and 3, assessing the improvement in understanding the roles and responsibilities, and communication among healthcare professionals, received the highest mean scores. Meanwhile, Question 15 concerning the incorporation of IPE into educational goals received the lowest mean score. Regression analysis identified gender and clinical phase as significant factors, with females and preclinical students exhibiting more favourable perceptions. Motivators for IPE included a keen interest in diverse perspectives and recognising the importance of teamwork, while barriers encompassed tightly packed schedules, lack of understanding about IPE, misconceptions regarding dental education, and students' nervousness and fear of participation., Conclusion: This study produced a valid and reliable instrument to measure undergraduate dental students' perceptions towards IPE. Strategic planning, such as overcoming logistical challenges, improving awareness, and creating a supportive learning environment are crucial for successful IPE integration into existing curricula, especially in resource-constrained developing countries like Malaysia., (© 2024. Background: The American Public Health Association defines a community health worker (CHW) as "a trusted member of and/or has an unusually close understanding of the community served." Both CHWs and pharmacists have shown they are well-equipped to produce positive outcomes in chronic disease management, but there is still a gap in the literature regarding the CHW-pharmacist relationship., Objective: The objective of this study was to assess and describe pharmacist perceptions and experiences with CHWs., Methods: An online survey was distributed to pharmacists via state and national pharmacy organizations in the following states: Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Minnesota, Nebraska, and Wisconsin. Descriptive statistics were used to summarize demographics and pharmacist experiences with CHWs., Results: The survey received 241 responses and 212 (88.0%) met inclusion criteria. Of the 212 eligible respondents, the survey was sufficiently completed by 163 (76.9%). These 163 complete responses were included in the data analysis. Fifty-eight (35.6%) respondents reported working with a CHW and 105 (64.4%) reported never working with a CHW. Fifty-two (89.7%) respondents who previously worked with a CHW were strongly interested or interested in continuing to work with a CHW. Sixty-one (58.1%) respondents without experience were strongly interested or interested in working with a CHW. The reported improvements seen with the addition of a CHW to the healthcare team included: improved patient empowerment, improved clinical patient outcomes, decreased workload of other health care professionals, increased healthcare knowledge, increased healthcare utilization, and increased medication and/or treatment plan adherence., Conclusion: Pharmacists recognize the benefit of working with a CHW and their contributions to patient care and want to continue working collaboratively. Authentic patient activities in an interprofessional education (IPE) setting can develop collaborative, practice ready health professionals who have the skills to work within and across teams with patients at the center of their care. In this qualitative study, the student experience of a novel interprofessional case study activity, with lived experience content delivered via an authentic patient video was explored. Transcripts were analyzed using reflexive thematic analysis and identified three major themes: (a) from disease-centered to person-centered care, (b) reflecting on roles in interprofessional collaborative practice, and (c) teamwork and lived experience facilitates learning. When considered within the Interprofessional Education Collaborative (IPEC) framework, the student experience suggested positive change in all four core competencies: interprofessional communication, values and ethics, roles and responsibilities and teamwork. In addition, students highly valued the interprofessional learning experience, and the patient video created a more realistic case study by reducing clinical assumptions. In conclusion, a short, single exposure to a written case followed by an authentic patient video in an IPE setting had an immediate positive impact on entry-level student health professionals. This simple methodology is a viable way of bringing the authentic patient voice into the classroom with additional benefit from the interprofessional format.

Background: Macro and meso level factors that influence the participation by clinical pharmacists in ward rounds include pharmacy management culture, commitment to ward rounds and adequate time for ward rounds being included in workload models. The 'micro' level factors that affect the involvement of clinical pharmacists in ward rounds have not been widely explored., Objective: Explore 'micro' level factors to gain insight into clinical pharmacists' participation in interprofessional ward rounds in inpatient settings through the lens of social cognitive theory., Method: A qualitative focused ethnographic study with five clinical pharmacists, four medical practitioners, one allied health professional and one nurse was conducted in three metropolitan hospitals in Southern Australia. Seven hours of semi-structured interview (n = 11) and 76-h of observations (n = 5) were conducted. A qualitative descriptive analysis was conducted (guided by Spradley) followed by reflexive thematic-analysis (according to Braun and Clarke's technique)., Results: Three micro level factors influencing clinical pharmacist participation in ward rounds are: (1) Cognitive mindset of clinical pharmacists, (2) Behavioural conduct of clinical pharmacists, and (3) Social rules of the ward. Clinical pharmacists that did not participate in ward round reconciled their moral distress by transferring information without clinical judgement or interpretation of the patient scenario to medical practitioners. Clinical pharmacists that did participate in ward rounds demonstrated credibility by making relevant recommendations with a holistic lens. Background: Interprofessional education is vital in oral healthcare education and should be integrated into both theoretical and work-based education. Little research addresses interprofessional education in dental hands-on training in authentic oral healthcare settings. The aim of the study was to examine the readiness and attitudes of dental and oral hygiene students towards interprofessional education during joint paediatric outreach training., Methods: In the spring of 2022, a cross-sectional study was done involving dental and oral hygiene students using the Readiness for Interprofessional Learning Scale (RIPLS) during joint paediatric outreach training. The 19-item tool was answered on a five-point Likert scale (1 = strongly disagree, 2 = disagree, 3 = neutral, 4 = agree, and 5 = strongly agree). Means, standard deviations, minimums, maximums, and medians were calculated for each subscale and overall score. Students grouped according to their categorical variables were compared for statistically significant differences. The Mann-Whitney U-test was used for groups of two and the Kruskal-Wallis one-way analysis for groups of three or more. The internal consistency of the scale was measured with Cronbach's alpha. Statistical level was set at 0.05., Results: The survey included 111 participants, consisting of 51 oral hygiene students and 60 dental students, with a response rate of 93%. The questionnaire yielded a high overall mean score of 4.2. Both oral hygiene (4.3) and dental students (4.2) displayed strong readiness for interprofessional education measured by the RIPLS. The subscale of teamwork and collaboration achieved the highest score of 4.5. Students lacking prior healthcare education or work experience obtained higher RIPLS scores. Oral hygiene students rated overall items (p = 0.019) and the subscales of positive professional identity (p = < 0.001) and roles and responsibilities (p = 0.038) higher than dental students. The Cronbach's alpha represented high internal consistency for overall RIPLS scores on the scale (0.812)., Conclusions: Both oral hygiene and dental students perceived shared learning as beneficial and showcased high readiness for interprofessional education, as evident in their RIPLS scores. Introduction The University of Otago School of Pharmacy Clinic (the Clinic) is a campus-based non-dispensing clinic that offers consultation-based medicines optimisation services to patients. Aim This project aims to understand the experiences and opinions of healthcareproviders who have referred patients to the School of Pharmacy Clinic, specifically: their motivation for referring patients; how the Clinic impacts providers, patients and the wider health system; provider satisfaction; and opportunities for further collaboration. Methods Semi-structured interviews were used to collect data from 15 participants who represented five health professions. An inductive reflexive thematic analysis approach was used to analyse the dataset from which codes and themes were developed. Normalisation Process Theory (NPT) was used to structure the interview guide and as a framework to present themes. Results Seven themes were developed; 'Perceptions of Pharmacists' (Coherence), 'Motivators for Engagement' and 'Barriers to Engagement' (Cognitive Participation), 'Utility of Pharmacist Feedback' and 'Opportunities' (Collective Action) and 'Referrers' Experiences' and 'Patient-centred Care' (Reflexive Action). Discussion Healthcare providers described predominantly positive experiences. Medically complex cases and patients requiring medicines education were most likely to be referred for consultation. Engaging with the Clinic presented valuable opportunities for interprofessional collaborative practice and continuing professional education. Referrers would like more regular contact with Clinic pharmacists to encourage interprofessional collaborative relationships. Patients were thought to benefit from their pharmacist's clinical expertise, time, patient-centred approach and subsequent medication and health optimisation. Integration of Clinic pharmacists into specialist outpatient clinics at Dunedin Hospital may broaden the scope and improve efficiency of their services.

Cette étude a sondé 46 médecins de famille québécois quant à leurs pratiques pour l'évaluation et le dépistage des conducteurs à risque afin 1) de mieux comprendre leur niveau de compétence perçu; 2) de recenser les difficultés rencontrées dans le processus de prise de décision et 3) de documenter leurs besoins et attitudes quant à une collaboration plus étroite avec les ergothérapeutes. Les participants (femmes : 84,8 %; moyenne d'expérience : 15,7 (±12,1) ans) ont répondu à un sondage en ligne de 30 questions. Les résultats de cette étude démontrent que malgré un certain confort à effectuer l'évaluation et le dépistage des conducteurs à risque, les médecins ne se considèrent pas comme les professionnels les mieux qualifiés pour ce faire. Ils reconnaissent également le rôle que jouent les ergothérapeutes dans le dépistage de cette clientèle et l'intervention auprès d'elle. Ils voient ainsi la pertinence d'avoir accès aux services de ces professionnels en soins de première ligne.

Introduction: The 68th World Health Assembly, in 2015, called for surgical and anaesthesia services strengthening. Acknowledging the healthcare staff shortages, they referred to task sharing, among others, as a more effective use of the healthcare workforce. While task sharing has been increasingly proposed as an important strategy to increase the reach and safety of anaesthesia as well as a means of supporting the workforce in low-resource settings, most data on task sharing relate to non-anaesthetic healthcare contexts. The aim of this study was to understand anaesthetic task sharing as currently experienced and/or envisaged by non-physician anaesthesia providers in Zambia and Somaliland., Methods: An exploratory qualitative research methodology was used. Participants were recruited initially via contacts of the research team, then through snowballing using a purposive sampling strategy. There were 13 participants: 7 from Somaliland and 6 from Zambia. Semistructured interviews took place synchronously, then were recorded, anonymised, transcribed and analysed thematically. Triangulation and respondents' validation were used to maximise data validity., Results: Four major themes were identified in relation to task sharing practices: (1) participants recognised variable components of task sharing in their practice; (2) access to task sharing depends both on sources and resources; (3) implicit barriers may inhibit task sharing practices; (4) there is an appetite among participants for amelioration of current task sharing practices., Conclusions: Empowering task sharing practices can be achieved only by understanding how these practices work, by identifying gaps and areas of improvement, and by addressing them. The findings from this exploratory study could help the global community understand how anaesthetic task sharing in low-resource settings works and inspire further research on the field. Background: Musculoskeletal consultations constitute a growing portion of primary care physician (PCP) referrals. Optimizing communication between PCPs and orthopaedists can potentially reduce time spent in the electronic medical record (EMR) as well as physician burnout. Little is known about the preferences of PCPs regarding communication from orthopaedic surgeons. Hence, the present study investigated, across a large health network, the preferences of PCPs regarding communication from orthopaedists., Methods: A total of 175 PCPs across 15 practices within our health network were surveyed. These providers universally utilized Epic as their EMR platform. Five-point, labeled Likert scales were utilized to assess the PCP-perceived importance of communication from orthopaedists in specific clinical scenarios. PCPs were further asked to report their preferred method of communication in each scenario and their overall interest in communication from orthopaedists. Logistic regression analyses were performed to determine whether any PCP characteristics were associated with the preferred method of communication and the overall PCP interest in communication from orthopaedists., Results: A total of 107 PCPs (61.1%) responded to the survey. PCPs most commonly rated communication from orthopaedists as highly important in the scenario of an orthopaedist needing information from the PCP. In this scenario, PCPs preferred to receive an Epic Staff Message. Scenarios involving a recommendation for surgery, hospitalization, or a major clinical change were also rated as highly important. In these scenarios, an Epic CC'd Chart rather than a Staff Message was preferred. Increased after-hours EMR use was associated with diminished odds of having a high interest in communication from orthopaedists (odds ratio, 0.65; 95% confidence interval, 0.48 to 0.88; p = 0.005). Ninety-three PCPs (86.9%) reported spending 1 to 1.5 hours or more per day in Epic after normal clinical hours, and 27 (25.2%) spent >3 hours per day. Forty-six PCPs (43.0%) reported experiencing ≥1 symptom of burnout., Conclusions: There were distinct preferences among PCPs regarding clinical communication from orthopaedic surgeons. There was also evidence of substantial burnout and after-hours work effort by PCPs. Background: Temporomandibular joint disorders (TMDs) are a variety of conditions that affect different parts of the temporomandibular joints (TMJ) and can cause orofacial pain and functional impairment. This study aims to investigate dental practitioners' knowledge and management of Temporomandibular Joint Disorders (TMDs), particularly their knowledge of the role physical therapy plays in TMD treatment., Methods: A mixed-methods approach was adopted to provide a comprehensive view of current knowledge, management practices, and attitudes toward collaboration among dental practitioners in treating TMD. Data were collected from a convenience sample of 335 dentists in Karachi using a detailed questionnaire to assess their knowledge of the role of physical therapy in the treatment of TMD. Twenty dentists were chosen for face-to-face, in-depth interviews to explore their experiences and challenges in managing TMDs based on their responses to the administered questionnaire., Results: The cumulative quantitative and qualitative findings of the study revealed a landscape marked by individualized approaches to referral practices and significant gaps in interdisciplinary collaboration. Most practitioners holding a bachelor's degree predominantly used medication (65.2%) and cause-specific treatment (65.3%) for TMD treatment. Thematic analysis of clinical efficacy and practitioner challenges in managing TMD revealed significant issues faced by dental professionals., Conclusions: The study successfully validated a questionnaire to understand dental practitioners' knowledge regarding physical therapy in TMD treatment. The study identified significant gaps in knowledge and a lack of collaboration between dentists and physiotherapists. Objective: The aim of this study was to explore factors associated with healthcare professionals' subjective perceptions of complex issues in primary care settings in Japan., Design: Cross-sectional survey conducted through a self-administered web-based questionnaire., Setting: Japan, from June to October 2020., Participants: Healthcare professionals recruited via an email list from the Japan Primary Care Association., Measures: The questionnaire assessed subjective perception of satisfaction, confidence and burden regarding complex issues using a 100 mm Visual Analogue Scale (VAS). Explanatory variables included the Japanese version of the Self-assessment Scale of Interprofessional Competency (JASSIC), basic demographic information, administrative experience and an organisational climate scale. This scale comprised the 'Plan, Do, See' (PDS) factor for management and the 'Do' factor in a leader-centred direction for those working under compulsion. Factors associated with subjective perceptions were analysed using binomial logistic regression analysis and Bonferroni analysis (p<0.017)., Results: Data from 593 participants (average age of 41.2 years, including 133 nurses, 128 physicians and 120 social workers) were analysed. Median (quartile) VAS scores for satisfaction, confidence and burden were 50 (36-70), 52 (40-70) and 50 (30-66), respectively. Higher satisfaction group was significantly associated with PDS factor, Do factor and JASSIC Score. Greater confidence group associated with older age, male, Do factor, administrative experience and JASSIC Score. No factors were significantly associated with the higher perceived burden., Conclusion: These findings reveal that interprofessional competency self-assessment influence perceptions of complex issues among healthcare professionals. We aimed to reveal the attitudes and perceptions of a group of nurses toward collaborative work and the barriers to collaborative practice. At the end of the study, we obtained four main themes: leadership in health services, interpersonal interaction factors, cooperation in patient care, standardization. The nurses emphasized the critical elements of respect, relationships and communication as components of effective collaborative practice. As a result, it was stated that the practice of cooperation between doctors and nurses is weak and there are some difficulties and obstacles.

The perception of Primary Health Care (PHC) practitioners about integrating physiotherapy into PHC in Nigeria is still unknown. The aim of this study was to examine the knowledge and attitude of PHC practitioners in Nigeria regarding the integration of physiotherapy into PHC. The participants in this cross-sectional study were 183 PHC practitioners (physicians, nurses, and community health workers). A content-validated, semi-structured questionnaire was used to obtain information about history of exposure to physiotherapy, knowledge, and attitudes toward integrating physiotherapy into PHC. Data was analyzed using Pearson's product moment correlation and Analysis of Variance at α = 0.05. Participants were mostly females (n = 154; 84.2%) and aged 39.97 ± 9.38 years. The mean years of work experience was 14.41 ± 8.68 years. Participants had limited knowledge about the role and scope of physiotherapy but were willing to learn more about physiotherapy. Less than half of the participants however, had favorable attitude toward integrating physiotherapy into PHC. Knowledge differed significantly across healthcare professions (p < .05) and was significantly correlated with attitude (p < .01). Our findings underscore the importance of interprofessional education and teamwork among healthcare providers. This might enhance understanding, modify attitudes and facilitate the inclusion of physiotherapy into PHC in Nigeria. Additionally, this could improve access to physiotherapy services for Nigerians.

Workplace-based learning provides medical students exposure to interprofessional competencies through repeated exposures and active participation in interprofessional learning activities. Using Situated Learning Theory as our theoretical lens, we explored with medical students how interacting with existing interprofessional teams contributes to development of an expanded health care professional identity. An embedded mixed methods study using semi-structured interviews and questionnaires to assess readiness for interprofessional learning was conducted with 14 medical students completing an elective at an interprofessional pain medicine clinic. Within this workplace-based context, a model identifying key themes and supporting factors contributing to the development of an extended professional identity was developed. These findings help describe the processes by which students gain interprofessional collaboration competence.

We aimed to assess the effect of continuing interprofessional education on collaborative self-efficacy, attitude toward the team, and interprofessional learning in workplace-based learning situations. This was a quasi-experimental study conducted in two educational hospitals. Two hundred and ten participants including nursing and medicine from general medicine, internal medicine, and emergency medicine, entered the study and were categorized in the census's intervention group ( n = 97) and control group ( n = 113). Continuing interprofessional education interventions included interprofessional rounds and workshops. Attitudes toward the team and interprofessional learning and collaborative self-efficacy were assessed using the Readiness for Interprofessional Learning, Attitudes Toward Health Care Teams, and Interprofessional Collaborator Assessment. Participants' attitude toward the team ( p -value <.001), attitude toward interprofessional learning ( p -value <.001), and interprofessional collaborative self-efficacy ( p -value <.001) were significantly improved compared to participants' scores in the control group. Integrating the principles of continuing education, interprofessional education, and workplace-based learning provided an effective learning situation through interactive relationships and active collaboration of participants. The findings revealed a significant educational effect of the intervention on attitude toward interprofessional learning and the team, and a small effect on self-efficacy of interprofessional collaboration.

The purpose of this study was to gain insight into change in attitudes held by students in oral healthcare about interprofessional learning and collaboration after one year of work in a student-run dental clinic (SRDC). Third- and fourth-year bachelor of dental hygiene students (n = 221) and first- and second-year master of dentistry students (n = 203) participated in baseline and follow-up measurements and completed 570 questionnaires. The Readiness for Interprofessional Learning Scale (RIPLS) was used to measure changes in attitudes toward Interprofessional Education (IPE) during participation in the SRDC. To validate the questionnaire for the setting, professional groups, and wording of RIPLS, we performed exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses. Two modified subscales remained: "Teamwork & Collaboration" and "Negative Professional Identity." Mixed linear models were used to assess relationships between students' attitudes toward IPE and participation in the SRDC. Overall, the students had positive attitudes toward IPE. At baseline, the attitudes of the dental hygiene and dentistry students were almost equally positive. After one year, dental hygiene students demonstrated a significantly more positive attitude toward collaborative learning and teamwork than the dentistry students. Further research should investigate whether the positive attitudes impact behavior in professional practice.

Introduction: This study explores general practitioners' (GPs') and medical specialists' perceptions of role distribution and collaboration in the care of patients with chronic conditions, exemplified by spinal cord injury., Methods: Semi-structured interviews with GPs and medical specialists caring for individuals with spinal cord injury in Switzerland. The physicians we interviewed were recruited as part of an intervention study. We used a hybrid framework of inductive and deductive coding to analyse the qualitative data., Results: Six GPs and six medical specialists agreed to be interviewed. GPs and specialists perceived the role of specialists similarly, namely as an expert and support role for GPs in the case of specialised questions. Specialists' expectations of GP services and what GPs provide differed. Specialists saw the GPs' role as complementary to their own responsibilities, namely as the first contact for patients and gatekeepers to specialised services. GPs saw themselves as care managers and guides with a holistic view of patients, connecting several healthcare professionals. GPs were looking for relations and recognition by getting to know specialists better. Specialists viewed collaboration as somewhat distant and focused on processes and patient pathways. Challenges in collaboration were related to unclear roles and responsibilities in patient care., Conclusion: The expectations for role distribution and responsibilities differ among physicians. Different goals of GPs and specialists for collaboration may jeopardise shared care models. The role distribution should be aligned according to patients' holistic needs to improve collaboration and provide appropriate patient care.

Digital Interprofessional Learning Client Documentation (D-IPL Client Docs) is an initiative designed to develop student interprofessional communication skills through electronic record writing and a virtual simulation (VS) or live virtual simulation (LVS) case conference. The aims of the study were to (a) identify whether D-IPL Client Docs supports student learning in the affective domain and (b) compare the learning outcomes for students participating in the VS versus the LVS case conference. Data were drawn from 83 Bachelor of Social Work students who had participated with other health professional students in the D-IPL Client Docs activities. The reflective journals submitted by this cohort of social work students were analyzed qualitatively and quantitatively using the Griffith University Affective Learning Scale. Qualitative analyses revealed that the activities enabled students in both groups to learn about themselves, their roles, and the roles of others, and the benefits of interprofessional collaboration in optimizing client outcomes. Quantitatively, the VS mode appeared to be more effective in supporting students to develop higher order affective learning; however, the effect size was small. Future studies should involve a larger sample size and include students from various professions to ascertain the transferability of findings.

Background: Safe, reliable, high-quality critical care delivery depends upon interprofessional teamwork., Objective: To describe perceptions of intensive care unit (ICU) teamwork and healthy work environments and evaluate whether perceptions vary by profession., Methods: In August 2015, Assessment of Interprofessional Team Collaboration Scale (AITCS) and the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses Healthy Work Environment Assessment Tool (HWEAT) surveys were distributed to all interprofessional members at the 68 ICUs participating in the ICU Liberation Collaborative. Overall scores range from 1 (needs improvement) to 5 (excellent)., Results: Most of the 3586 surveys completed were from registered nurses (51.2%), followed by respiratory therapists (17.8%), attending physicians (10.5%), rehabilitation therapists (8.3%), pharmacists (4.9%), nursing assistants (3.1%), and physician trainees (4.1%). Overall, respondents rated teamwork and work environment health favorably (mean [SD] scores: AITCS, 3.92 [0.64]; HWEAT, 3.45 [0.79]). The highest-rated AITCS domain was "partnership/shared decision-making" (mean [SD], 4.00 [0.63); lowest, "coordination" (3.67 [0.80]). The highest-scoring HWEAT standard was "effective decision-making" (mean [SD], 3.60 [0.79]); lowest, "meaningful recognition" (3.30 [0.92]). Compared with attending physicians (mean [SD] scores: AITCS, 3.99 [0.54]; HWEAT, 3.48 [0.70]), AITCS scores were lower for registered nurses (3.91 [0.62]), respiratory therapists (3.86 [0.76]), rehabilitation therapists (3.84 [0.65]), and pharmacists (3.83 [0.55]), and HWEAT scores were lower for respiratory therapists (3.38 [0.86]) (all P ≤ .05)., Conclusions: Teamwork and work environment health were rated by ICU team members as good but not excellent. Background and Objectives: The COVID-19 pandemic required rapid adaptation of multidisciplinary tumor board conferences to a virtual setting; however, there are little data describing the benefits and challenges of using such a platform., Methods: An anonymous quality improvement survey was sent to participants of tumor board meetings at a large academic institution. Participants answered questions pertaining to the relative strengths and weaknesses of in-person and virtual settings., Results: A total of 335 responses (23.3% response rate) were recorded, and 253 met inclusion criteria. Respondents represented 25 different tumor board meetings, with colorectal, breast, and liver (18.6%, 17.0%, and 13.0%, respectively) being the most commonly attended. Virtual tumor boards were equivalent to in-person across 9 of 10 domains queried, while a virtual format was preferred for participation in off-site tumor boards. The lack of networking opportunities was ranked by physicians to be a significant challenge of the virtual format. Consistent leadership and organization, engaged participation of all attendees, and upgrading technology infrastructure were considered critical for success of virtual meetings., Conclusions: The implementation of virtual tumor board meetings has been associated with numerous challenges. Students' attitudes toward interprofessional teamwork can be linked to successful interprofessional education. This points to the importance of identifying a scale that may be useful in keeping track of the change in students' attitudes over time. In response to this, using a combination of within- and between-network approaches to construct validity, we examined the psychometric acceptability of the Interprofessional Attitude Scale (IPAS) involving 274 Chinese healthcare and social care pre-licensure students in Hong Kong. Overall results indicated that IPAS had good internal consistency. Results of the confirmatory factor analysis provided support to the overall five-factor solution although one negatively worded item obtained non-significant factor loading. Results of the between-network analysis suggest that various subscales of IPAS correlated systematically with other theoretically relevant variables: teamwork attitudes, communication, and team effectiveness. The IPAS is a valid measure to examine predominantly Chinese healthcare and social care students' interprofessional attitudes in online interprofessional education.

Objective: Vaccination in pharmacies has been a key component of national vaccination strategies to facilitate vaccination access. Qualitative data on the perspectives of professional stakeholders on vaccination in pharmacies and on the professional relations of pharmacists with physicians regarding increasing immunisation rates is limited. We conducted a qualitative study in Switzerland. The main aim was to gain further insight into professional stakeholders' perspectives on vaccination counselling and administration conducted in pharmacies, and to further understand their views on physicians' and pharmacists' roles in increasing immunisation rates., Design: We conducted semistructured qualitative interviews. We coded and analysed transcripts using thematic analysis., Setting: Face-to-face interviews took place in German-speaking and French-speaking regions of Switzerland., Participants: We interviewed 14 key vaccination stakeholders including health authorities, heads of pharmacy management and professional association boards. All participants had a background in medicine or pharmacy., Results: Three main themes emerged from the qualitative data: (1) Participants viewed pharmacists as competent to provide vaccination counselling and administration based on their university training; (2) interprofessional cooperation between physicians and pharmacists on vaccination topics is limited and should be improved; and (3) pharmacists play an important role in increasing immunisation rates by facilitating vaccination access and through provision of vaccination counselling., Conclusion: By providing vaccination counselling and administering vaccines, pharmacists play an important public health role. Introduction: Asthma affects 2.7 million people in Australia and is predominantly managed by general practitioners (GPs) within primary care. Despite national focus on this condition, asthma control in the population is suboptimal, with many preventable hospitalizations. In the light of robust evidence supporting the role of pharmacists in the management of chronic diseases including asthma, the Australian Medical Association (AMA) proposed a General Practice Pharmacist (GPP) model in 2015. In this proposal, a non-dispensing pharmacist, co-located within the primary care setting and collaborating with GPs and allied health professionals, can make a positive impact on patients' health and minimize costs due to medication misadventure. The aim of this study was to obtain the views of GPs regarding the GPP model for better management of asthma in a qualitative study., Methods: Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 23 GPs, audio-recorded, transcribed verbatim, and later analyzed for emergent themes. The GPs support the idea of a GPP as time and task pressures restrict them in adhering to asthma management guidelines., Results: Support from another health professional in such a pressured environment can positively impact patient's health. Funding, clear role delineation within general practice, training of pharmacists working as GPPs, and effective communication systems were described as the potential catalysts for the success of the model., Conclusion: Sustainable funding and the willingness of practice owners/managers were described as the barriers. The GPs agreed that pharmacists can make a positive difference in patient's asthma management once the barriers were effectively addressed.

The COVID-19 pandemic has negatively impacted the health of people from communities of color and people of limited socioeconomic means in a disproportionate way due to social determinants of health (SDoH). The Centers for Disease Control defines SDoH as the "conditions in the places where people live, learn, work, and play that affect a wide range of health and quality-of life-risks and outcomes." A related construct, social determinants of learning (SDoL), includes contextual conditions and variables that impact students' ability to optimally participate in their education, including academic and clinical development. SDoL directly impact students' ability to participate in the educational process. During the COVID-19 pandemic, students struggling with SDoH and, by extension SDoL, may be more likely to have sick family members, caregiving responsibilities, food and housing insecurity, and obligations to supplement lost family wages. SDoL are also influenced by individual experiences within and outside of the classroom. Beyond bringing this matter to the attention of our profession, especially clinical and academic educators, we must take action to reach and support students who are at higher academic risk due to the SDoL. The purpose of this paper is to (1) define SDoL, (2) explain how SDoL are impacting doctor of physical therapy and physical therapist assistant students, and (3) discuss actions that physical therapists and physical therapist assistants can take to mitigate the effects of SDoL on current doctor of physical therapy and physical therapist assistant students., Impact: This Perspective is one of the first explorations of how SDoL affect physical therapy students during the pandemic and provides concrete suggestions on how educators in both academic and clinical settings can help students succeed when they are negatively affected by SDoL., (© The Author(s) 2021. Background: Failures in teamwork are a common reason for adverse medical events. The goals of this study are to evaluate attitudes toward teamwork among an interprofessional group of health professionals and to analyze the effectiveness of an educational intervention with high-fidelity clinical simulation to improve these attitudes., Method: An educational intervention was developed that used a 6-hour session that included three simulated clinical cases. The Attitudes Toward Health Care Teams Scale was used for assessment. Mean difference before and after the intervention was calculated with the Wilcoxon test., Results: Positive attitude toward teamwork after completion of the training activities was measured. The health care professionals who showed the most positive attitude toward teamwork were physicians (93.92, SD = 6.58) and resident physicians (95.01, SD = 6.33). The greatest increase was observed among orderlies ( p < .001) and nursing assistants ( p < .001)., Conclusion: The use of clinical simulation for interprofessional training of health care professionals showed a positive effect on attitudes toward teamwork. Complex learning strategies, like interprofessional training wards in which students work autonomously in interprofessional collaboration, can support the development of interprofessional competencies in terms of knowledge, abilities and attitudes. To assess the short-term and long-term effects of a three to five weeks placement on such an interprofessional training ward on nursing and medical undergraduates, a study with pre-post-follow-up design was conducted from April 2017 until February 2019. Outcome measures were the University of the West of England Interprofessional Questionnaire (UWE-IP), the Interprofessional Socialization and Valuing Scale (ISVS), and the Assessment of Interprofessional Team Collaboration Scale (AITCS) measuring interprofessional competencies, including teamwork, communication, interprofessional learning, collaboration, and socialization. 60 medical and 63 nursing undergraduates of the first 16 interprofessional student teams that were placed on the Heidelberg interprofessional training ward (HIPSTA) between April 2017 and November 2018 were included in the study. Data was analyzed using the linear mixed model analysis for longitudinal comparisons of scores before, directly after and three months after the placement on the interprofessional training ward. Statistically significant positive short-term effects in interprofessional competencies were found in all three questionnaires, with effect sizes up to d = 1.05. Statistically significant positive long-term effects with effect sizes up to d = 0.60 were found in the ISVS and the AITCS concerning socialization and collaboration. These results indicate that interprofessional education in a clinical setting positively influences the participants' perception of interprofessional socialization and teamwork. This may possibly lead to improved interprofessional collaboration in their further career. Strategies to yield a sustainable improvement of attitudes toward interprofessional interaction are still needed.

Interprofessional Education (IPE) is one approach to improving communication and collaborative practice between professions, which are essential for the optimal delivery of healthcare. Common barriers include negative attitudes, professional stereotypes, professional cultures and power differentials between professional groups. The aim of this qualitative study was to explore how professional hierarchies and power differentials shape interprofessional interactions between preregistration pharmacy and medicine students. Data were gathered via semi-structured interviews and subject to thematic analysis. Four main themes were identified: Reproducing traditional hierarchies; Social norms around respect; Hierarchies in care values and goals; and Challenging the narrative is possible. Students' interactions with and views of the other profession largely reflected traditional stereotypes and power differentials. Hierarchy was evident in how respect was accorded and in how care values and goals were managed. Despite this, students overwhelmingly perceived and reported a sense of agency in changing the status quo. Emerging professional identity and conceptualisation of future roles is heavily influenced by the hierarchical relationship between the professions and can pose a significant barrier to collaborative practice. Greater support for collaborative interprofessional practice is needed at the level of policy and accreditation in health education and healthcare to ensure greater commitment to change., Competing Interests: The authors have declared that no competing interests exist.

Numerous measures have been developed for the assessment of interprofessional attitudes, including the Interprofessional Attitudes Scale (IPAS). The purpose of this study was to assess, and contribute to, the validity evidence for the IPAS. The IPAS was used in a three-year longitudinal study to collect data from first year health professionals. Three forms of assessment were conducted to accrue validity evidence for the IPAS: Exploratory Factor Analysis, Item Analysis, and analysis using Item Response Theory. Data was collected from 337 participants over three years. Separately, and cumulatively, the Exploratory Factor Analysis, Item Analysis and analysis using Item Response Theory identified issues with the content, response process, internal structure, and consequential validity of the IPAS. The outcomes of the present study call into question the use of the IPAS, and other measures, for the assessment of interprofessional attitudes. The present study contributes several pieces of evidence to the validity of the IPAS and the reevaluation of the use of attitude assessment in interprofessional education.

Background: Educational opportunities for health care professional students to learn collaborative communication and the roles and responsibilities of other disciplines are minimal unless faculty are intentional about facilitating this interdisciplinary learning., Objectives: The aim of this study was to determine how a simulation-enhanced interprofessional education (Sim-IPE) teaching strategy fostered communication and interdisciplinary awareness between students from multiple disciplines., Method: This pretest-posttest design surveyed undergraduate students from 5 disciplines. The Student Perceptions of Interprofessional Clinical Education-Revised tool examined students' perceptions of teamwork and roles after an in-depth, multistate critical care simulation experience., Results: All students' perceptions of teamwork increased after the Sim-IPE. More experience in the health care field is associated with an increased perception of teamwork and roles/responsibilities., Discussion: On the basis of these findings, the critical care Sim-IPE was an effective teaching strategy to increase the perception of roles and responsibilities of interprofessional critical care team members with applicability to many other specialty topics., (Copyright © 2021 Wolters Kluwer Health, Inc. Background: Ambulatory surgery presents unique challenges regarding adequate pain management and education. Studies have documented issues with transfer of information and patient comfort. Our objective was to explore perioperative nurses' perspectives of current practices and challenges with pain management and education., Materials and Methods: We used a qualitative descriptive design and conducted four focus group interviews, with 24 total participants from two perioperative areas of an academic medical center, using a standardized script. Using qualitative analysis software, two investigators reviewed the data and coded major themes and subthemes. The consolidated criteria for reporting qualitative studies guidelines were followed for reporting the data., Results: We identified four major themes impacting current perioperative pain management and education practices: communication among the perioperative care team, sources of nurses' frustrations in the perioperative setting, patient expectations for pain, and nurse-driven pain management and education. Nurses highlighted their work became easier with adequate information transfer and trust from physicians. Frustrations stemmed from surgeon, system, and patient factors. Nurses often use their clinical experience and judgment in managing patients throughout the perioperative period. Furthermore, nurses felt patients have limited pain education and stressed education throughout the surgical care pathway could improve overall care., Conclusions: Perioperative pain management, assessment, and education practices are inconsistent, incomplete, and sources of frustrations according to participants. Participant experiences highlight the need for improved and standardized models. Objectives: This pilot study explores how healthcare leaders understand spiritual care and how that understanding informs staffing and resource decisions., Methods: This study is based on interviews with 11 healthcare leaders, representing 18 hospitals in 9 systems, conducted between August 2019 and February 2020., Results: Leaders see the value of chaplains in terms of their work supporting staff in tragic situations and during organizational change. They aim to continue to maintain chaplaincy efforts in the midst of challenging economic realities., Conclusions: Chaplains' interactions with staff alongside patient outcomes are a contributing factor in how resources decisions are made about spiritual care.

Objective: To explore fetal medicine specialists' experiences of caring for parents following a diagnosis of fatal fetal anomaly (FFA) during the implementation of termination of pregnancy (TOP) for FFA for the first time., Design: Qualitative study., Setting: Fetal medicine units in the Republic of Ireland., Population: Ten fetal medicine specialists from five of the six fetal medicine units., Methods: nvivo 12 assisted in the thematic analysis of semi-structured in-depth face-to-face interviews., Main Outcome Measures: Fetal medicine specialists' experiences of prenatal diagnosis and holistic management of pregnancies complicated by FFA., Results: Four themes were identified: 'not fatal enough', 'interactions with colleagues', 'supporting pregnant women' and 'internal conflict and emotional challenges'. Fetal medicine specialists feared getting an FFA diagnosis incorrect because of media scrutiny and criminal liability associated with the TOP for FFA legislation. Challenges with the ambiguous and 'restrictive' legislation were identified that 'ostracised' severe anomalies. Teamwork was essential to facilitate opportunities for learning and peer support; however, conflict with colleagues was experienced regarding the diagnosis of FFA, the provision of feticide and palliative care to infants born alive following TOP for FFA. Participants reported challenges implementing TOP for FFA, including the absence of institutional support and 'stretched' resources. Fetal medicine specialists experienced internal conflict and a psychological burden providing TOP for FFA, but did so to 'provide full care for women'., Conclusions: Our study identified challenges regarding the suitability of the Irish legislation for TOP for FFA and its rapid introduction into clinical practice.
