Abstract

We present results of barrier distribution measurements for $^{24}\mathrm{Mg}+^{90,92}\mathrm{Zr}$ systems by the backscattering method. The measurements were done at near-barrier beam energies of 68--88.5 MeV (in the laboratory frame) at six angles. A strong discrepancy between experimental results and the predictions of the standard coupled channels calculations was observed. To test the hypothesis that this discrepancy may be due to partial energy dissipation caused by coupling to many target noncollective levels, we performed calculations using the coupled channels plus random matrix theory ($\mathrm{CC}+\mathrm{RMT}$) model. The comparison of calculations with experimental results gives qualitative support of the hypothesis; however, quantitatively the agreement is not as good as in the case of the $^{20}\mathrm{Ne}$ projectile.

Abstract

International audience; The emission probability of Intermediate Mass Fragments (IMFs) in non-central reactions has been investigated in collisions of heavy $^{124}\hbox {Xe}$ projectiles with the two different medium-mass targets of $^{64}\hbox {Ni}$ and $^{64}\hbox {Zn}$ at the laboratory energy of 35 A MeV. The two colliding systems differ only for the target atomic number Z and, consequently, for the isospin N/Z ratio. The probability of IMFs emission from the projectile-like fragment has been measured, showing an enhancement of the IMFs emission for the neutron rich $^{64}\hbox {Ni}$ target. Most of the observed projectile break-up yield is associated with the production of only one IMF, that is, a quasi-binary splitting of projectile in two fragments in a broad range of charge asymmetry. For the events with one IMF, the relative contributions of the dynamical and statistical emissions have been evaluated. We find an enhancement of dynamical break-up probability for the neutron rich target with respect to the neutron poor one. The analysis suggests influence of the target isospin in inducing the dynamical break-up of projectile-like fragments. The new data have been also compared with previous published results of $^{112,124}\hbox {Sn}$ + $^{58,64}\hbox {Ni}$ systems, in order to disentangle between isospin effects against system-size effects on the emission probability. The comparisons between previous and new data suggest that the dynamical break-up is determined by the N/Z content of both projectile and target; for the cases here investigated, the influence of the system size on the dynamical emission probability can be excluded.

Abstract

The 0 2 + Hoyle state and few other excited levels of 12C are fundamental for the production of carbon in the universe. In particular, the γ decay branching ratio is of utmost importance, being the only way to produce a carbon at the ground state. For the purpose to precisely investigate the decay mechanism of such states we conducted an experiment, at Laboratori Nazionali del Sud-Istituto Nazionale di Fisica Nucleare (INFN-LNS), using the reaction α + 12 C at 64 MeV. We used the 4π CHIMERA detector to detect both α and γ 12 C decay channels. Details of the experiment and preliminary results are discussed in the paper.

Abstract

International audience; The study of cluster states in neutron-rich Be and C isotopes is a subject of interest in Nuclear Physics. These states should be characterized by high deformation where α-clusters are bounded by valence neutrons. We performed a spectroscopic study of 10Be and 16C isotopes via projectile break-up reactions, by using radioactive beams produced at the INFN-LNS FRIBs facility and the Chimera 4π array. The possible evidence of a new 10Be state at 13.5 MeV excitation energy was found in the 6He+4He disintegration channel. The spectroscopy of 16C was studied via the 6He+10Be break-up channel; in this case we found the indication of a possible new state at about 20.6 MeV.

International audience; At Laboratori Nazionali del Sud of Catania an experiment has been carried out in order to investigate the correlations between particles produced in 12C+24Mg reaction at 35 AMeV incident energy. Two α correlation has been explored because provide information about temperature of 8Be nuclei produced in the reaction, while three α correaltion has been studied in order to evaluate the competition between sequential and direct decay mode of resonances produced in 12C quasi-projectiles.

Abstract

A new method to extract high resolution angular distributions from kinematical coincidence measurements in binary reactions is presented. Kinematic is used to extract the center of mass angular distribution from the measured energy spectrum of light particles. Results obtained in the case of 10Be+p-->9Be+d reaction measured with the CHIMERA detector are shown. Abstract

The kinematical coincidence method is used to extract angular distribution of elastic scattering and transfer reactions. The detected light particle energy spectra are used to extract the angular distribution with around 1° resolution in the Center of Mass (CM) system. Examples with 10Be beam are presented. In the case of proton scattering, γ-ray coincidences are used to discriminate excited levels population from elastic scattering. © Owned by the authors, published by EDP Sciences, 2014.

Abstract

Semi-peripheral collisions of ^{64}Ni + ^{124}Sn in direct and inverse kinematics, at 35 A MeV incident energy, are studied to characterize the dynamical origin and align-ments properties of fragments emission at midrapidity. This emission is partly due to the fragmentation of a transient neck joining the projectile and target in the early stages of the reaction. Recently we exploited observable from neck fragmentation to constraint the density dependence of the symmetry energy. In this contribution we focus on the density evolution of the mid-rapidity source. An experimental survey is suggested to check if data are consistent with the formation of neck fragments in a dilute density region in contact with the projectile-like and target-like spectators at normal saturation density.

Abstract

International audience; The nuclear reaction (40)Ca+(12)C at 25 MeV per nucleon incident energy was used to produce excited alpha-conjugate fragments from projectile fragmentation mechanism. From a careful selection provided by a complete detection and from comparisons with models of sequential and simultaneous decays, evidence in favor of α-particle clustering from excited light alpha-conjugate nuclei is reported.

Abstract

International audience; Nuclear reactions between medium-mass nuclei at low energy are characterized by the competition between binary and evaporation process in the compound nucleus de-excitation. A study of the influence of the neutron richness of the entrance channel on the decay paths of the compound nuclei formed in the (78) Kr +(40) Ca and (86) Kr +(48) Ca at 10 MeV/A is presented. The experiment has been performed at Laboratori Nazionali del Sud by using the CHIMERA 4π multidetector for charged particles. The Kinematical characteristics of the two reactions support the conclusion of a production via long lived system. Besides the results relative to the n-poor system are compared to those obtained at GANIL, performed at 5.5 AMeV, in order to study the energy influence.

Abstract

Within the dinuclear system model the charge, mass, and isotopic distributions of the products in the reactions $^{78}\mathrm{Kr}+^{40}\mathrm{Ca}$ and $^{86}\mathrm{Kr}+^{48}\mathrm{Ca}$ are predicted at bombarding energy 10 MeV/nucleon. The heavy-ion phase-space exploration code is applied to take into consideration the pre-equilibrium emission of light particles. The competition is treated between complete fusion followed by the decay of compound nucleus and quasifission channels. The possible explanation of the odd-even staggering in the yield of the final reaction products at high excitation energies is discussed.

Abstract

Be10 and C16 spectroscopy has been investigated by analyzing their breakup events on CH2 and CD2 targets. Breakup fragments have been detected by means of the CHIMERA detector. In particular, we investigated cluster decays of Be10 in He4+He6 and of C16 in He6+Be10 and He4+He6+He6. From the relative energy analysis of breakup fragments, we investigate the spectroscopy of excited states of projectile nuclei. In the Be10 case we observe known states at 9.51, 10.16, 10.6, and 11.8 MeV. Further, we suggest the existence of a new state at 13.5 MeV, possibly 6+ as indicated from angular correlation analysis. The relative energy (Erel+Eth) spectrum of C16, reconstructed starting from He6+Be10 correlations, shows a peak at about 20.6 MeV, probably related to the existence of an high-lying excited state. Non-vanishing yields are also seen in the triple coincidences He4+He6+He6.

Abstract

The binary break-up of projectile-like fragments in non central heavy-ion collisions follows different decay patterns, from equilibrated emission towards dynamical (prompt) fission. Recently, comparing two systems with different N/Z in the entrance channel, it has been shown that the dynamical emission cross-section is enhanced for the most neutron rich system while the statistical emission cross-section is independent from the isotopic composition. In order to understand this dependence and disentangle it from the initial size of the nuclei, we have studied the two isobaric systems 124 Xe +64 Zn and 124 Xe +64 Ni at 35 A MeV (InKiIsSy experiment), in comparison with the previous studied reactions (124 Sn +64 Ni and 112 Sn +58 Ni ) at the same bombarding energy. We present the first results evidencing a striking similar effect in the dynamical decay as a function of the N/Z of the target for equal size systems.

Abstract

International audience; The elliptic-flow ratio of neutrons with respect to protons or light complex particles in reactions of heavy ions at pre-relativistic energies has been proposed as an observable sensitive to the strength of the symmetry term of the nuclear equation of state at supra-saturation densities. In the ASY-EOS experiment at the GSI laboratory, flows of neutrons and light charged particles were measured for ^197Au+^197Au collisions at 400 MeV/nucleon. Flow results obtained for the Au+Au system, in comparison with predictions of the UrQMD transport model, confirm the moderately soft to linear density dependence of the symmetry energy deduced from the earlier FOPI-LAND data.

Abstract

International audience; The results of the analysis of the reactions 78,86Kr +40,48 Ca at 10 AMeV are presented. The experiment was performed at the INFN Laboratori Nazionali del Sud (LNS) in Catania by using the 4π multidetector CHIMERA, with beams delivered by the Superconductive Cyclotron. The competition among the various disintegration paths and in particular the isospin effects on the decay modes of the produced composite systems are investigated; this provides information about fundamental nuclear quantities such as level density, fission barrier and viscosity. Different isotopic composition and relative richness are observed among the reaction products of the two systems. An odd-even staggering effect is present in the charge distributions, in particular for the light fragments produced by the neutron-poor system. The kinematical characteristics of the IMF seem to indicate a high degree of the relaxation of the formed system. Besides, global features analysis seems to show some differences in the contribution arising from the various reaction mechanisms for the two reactions.

Abstract

The dependence of the CsI(Tl) scintillation time constants and intensities on the particle ionization profile is at the basis of the Charge and Mass identification technique for Light Charged Products in Intermediate Energy Nuclear Physics multi-detector arrays. The possibility of storing the digitized waveforms in true beam experiments allows performing further offline analyses and makes available a data set related to the interaction of different particle types in a wide energy range.

Abstract

Matière Nucléaire NIM; Semiperipheral collisions in the $^{124}$Sn+${64}Ni reaction at 35 MeV/nucleon were studied using the forward part of the Charged Heavy Ion Mass and Energy Resolving Array. Nearly completely determined ternary events involving projectilelike fragments (PLF), targetlike fragments (TLF), and intermediate mass fragments (IMF) were selected. A new method of studying the reaction mechanism, focusing on the analysis of the correlations between relative velocities in the IMF+PLF and IMF+TLF subsystems, is proposed. The relative velocity correlations provide information on the time sequence and time scale of the neck fragmentation processes leading to production of IMFs. It is shown that the majority of light IMFs are produced within 40–80 fm/c after the system starts to reseparate. Heavy IMFs are formed at times of about 120 fm/c or later and can be viewed as resulting from two-step (sequential) neck rupture processes.

Abstract

In past experiments, mass asymmetric projectile-target combinations 124Sn+64Ni and 112Sn+58Ni were investigated at ELab(112,124Sn)=35 A.MeV beam energy by using the 4π multi-detector CHIMERA. From a quantitative comparison of cross sections associated to Statistical and Dynamical Fission of the Projectile-Like Fragments, it resulted that Dynamical Fission process is about two times more probable in the neutron rich 124Sn+64Ni system than in the 112Sn +58 Ni neutron poor one. In contrast, no sizable difference was found for Statistical Fission mechanism. The observed difference in the strength of the Dynamical effects could arise from the difference in entrance channel Isospin (N/Z) content. In order to disentangle Isospin effects from effects due to the different masses of the two systems, a new experiment 124Xe+64Zn at 35 A.MeV beam energy has been recently carried out.

Abstract

De-excitation modes of compound systems 118Ba and 134Ba, produced respectively in the 78Kr+40Ca and 86Kr+48Ca collisions at 10 A.MeV, are investigated. In particular, the competition between the various disintegration decay paths of medium mass compound nuclei, formed by fusion processes and the isospin (related to N/Z) of the entrance channel influence on the decay process, are studied. Data were taken at the INFN-Laboratori Nazionali del Sud (LNS) in ISODEC experiment, by using the CHIMERA array. The experiment complements and improves the previous experiment performed at GANIL where the same mechanisms were studied at lower excitation energies. The results show the presence of a relaxed component in the reaction mechanism, evident staggering effects in the Z distributions, as well as different isotopic composition and neutron enrichment for the reaction products in the two systems.

In particular, the competition between the various disintegration path of medium mass compound nuclei, formed by fusion processes, the production of the so referred Intermediate Mass Fragments (IMF), and the isospin dependence of the decay process are studied. Data were taken at the INFN-Laboratori Nazionali del Sud (LNS) by using the CHIMERA array. Data analysis is in progress; a first indication on the average-energy angular distributions suggests pre-equilibrium effects affecting the data and the presence of isotopical effects.

Abstract

International audience; The study of the decay modes competition of the compound systems produced in thecollisions 78Kr+40Ca and 86Kr+48Ca at 10AMeV is presented. In particular, the N/Z entrance channelinfluence on the decay paths of the compound systems, directly connected to the isospin influence, isinvestigated. The experiment was performed at the INFN Laboratori Nazionali del Sud (LNS) inCatania by using the 4π multi-detector CHIMERA. Charge, mass, angular distributions andkinematical features of the reaction products were studied. The analysis shows some differences in thecontribution arising from the various reaction mechanisms for the neutron poor and neutron richsystems. Comparison with theoretical statistical and dynamical models are presented for the twosystems. Besides a study of the influence of the energy on the entrance channel is performed for the78Kr+40Ca reaction, by comparing the results of this experiment to those obtained for the same systemat 5.5 AMeV with the INDRA device at GANIL.

Abstract

International audience; Projectile break-up reactions induced on polyethylene (CH_2) target are used in order to study the spectroscopy of ^10Be and ^16C nuclei. For the present experiment we used ^10Be and ^16C beams delivered by the FRIBs facility at INFN-LNS, and the CHIMERA 4pi multi-detector. ^10Be and ^16C structures are studied via a relative energy analysis of break-up fragments. The ^4He+^6He break-up channel allowed us to study the spectroscopy of ^10Be; in particular we find evidence of a new state in ^10Be at 13.5 MeV excitation energy. The ^16C nucleus is studied via ^6He-^10Be correlation; we find the fingerprint of a possiblestate at about 20.6 MeV

Abstract

We discuss experimental data concerning 40,48Ca+ 40,48Ca reactions at 25 MeV/nucleon; the 4π multi-detector Chimera has been used as detection device. Effects that can be attributed to the neutron to proton ratios (N/Z) degree of freedom have been investigated. From the analysis of experimental data it seems that the neutron richness of the interacting system plays an important role on the evolution of fusion-like sources formed in semi-central collisions. In particular, it is observed that the larger is the neutron content and the larger is the emission of heavy residues. Experimental data have been compared with CoMD-II model calculations; a moderately stiff symmetry energy should be used to reproduce satisfactorily the data. A thermodynamical analysis on fusion-like sources has been also performed. In semi-peripheral collisions, isospin diffusion signals have been found. They have been investigated by analyzing isobaric emission ( 7Li/7Be) of quasi-projectile sources. Experimental data indicate that an incomplete N/Z mixing is reached during the interaction phase.

Abstract

Background: In heavy-ion collisions at intermediate energies the production of light charged particles and intermediate mass fragments (IMFs) is due to different reaction mechanisms and different time scales, ranging from fast dynamical processes to statistical emission from the equilibrated system.Purpose: We compare the IMF statistical and dynamical emission probabilities in collisions of a neutron-rich $^{124}\mathrm{Sn}+^{64}\mathrm{Ni}$ system and a neutron-poor $^{112}\mathrm{Sn}+^{58}\mathrm{Ni}$ system at the laboratory energy of 35 $A$ MeV.Method: The IMFs production mechanism in semiperipheral reactions has been investigated in our previous works. In this paper, the analysis is expanded for the same set of data and production cross sections have been evaluated for dynamical and statistical emission in a coherent way for light and heavy fragments.Results: The data analysis has evidenced a strong competition between dynamical and statistical emission mechanisms. Probability of the dynamical emission of IMFs is strongly influenced by the ($N/Z$) ratio of the colliding system.Conclusions: It is demonstrated that the statistical emission is equally probable for the two systems, while the dynamical emission is enhanced for the neutron-rich system, especially for heavy fragments ($Z\ensuremath{\ge}6$). The observed effect points at a high sensitivity of the prompt-dynamical emission to the ($N/Z$) ratio of a given system.

Abstract

Background: In heavy ion collision at the Fermi energies Isospin equilibration processes occur- ring when nuclei with different charge/mass asymmetries interacts have been investigated to get information on the nucleon-nucleon Iso-vectorial effective interaction. Purpose: In this paper, for the system 48Ca +27 Al at 40 MeV/nucleon, we investigate on this process by means of an observable tightly linked to isospin equilibration processes and sensitive in exclusive way to the dynamical stage of the collision. From the comparison with dynamical model calculations we want also to obtain information on the Iso-vectorial effective microscopic interaction. Method: The average time derivative of the total dipole associated to the relative motion of all emitted charged particles and fragments has been determined from the measured charges and velocities by using the 4? multi-detector CHIMERA. The average has been determined for semi- peripheral collisions and for different charges Zb of the biggest produced fragment. Experimental evidences collected for the systems 27Al+48Ca and 27Al+40Ca at 40 MeV/nucleon used to support this novel method of investigation are also discussed., Submitted for publication on Phys. Abstract

The gamma decay of the first excited 4.44 MeV 2+level of 12C, populated by inelastic scattering of proton and 16O beams at various energies was studied in order to test γ-ray detection efficiency and the quality of angular distribution information given by the CsI(Tl) detectors of the 4π CHIMERA array. The γ-decay was measured in coincidence with ejectile scattered particles in an approximately 4π geometry allowing to extract the angular distribution in the reference frame of recoiling 12C target. The typical sin2 (2θ) behavior of angular distribution was observed in the case of 16O beam. Besides that, for the proton beam, in order to explain the observed distribution, the addition of an incoherent flat contribution was required. This latter is the effect of proton spin flip events allowing the population of M=±1 magnetic substates, that is not possible in reactions induced by 16O beam. A comparison with previously collected data, obtained measuring only in and out of plane proton-γ-ray coincidences, confirms the good quality of the angular distribution information given by the apparatus. Possible applications with radioactive beams are outlined. © 2015 Elsevier B.V.

Abstract

Two-particle correlation functions, involving protons, deuterons, tritons, and α -particles, have been measured at very forward angles ( 0.7 ° ⩽ θ lab ⩽ 7 ° ), in order to study projectile-like fragment (PLF) emission in E / A = 44 and 77 MeV 40 Ar + 27 Al collisions. The observed correlations are similar for the two reactions at E / A = 44 and 77 MeV, except for peaks originating from resonance decays, which are larger at the lower bombarding energy. Particle-velocity gated correlation functions are presented, and possible implications on the time sequence of the light charged particles, emitted from the PLF, are discussed.

Abstract

At the Laboratori Nazionali del Sud (LNS) in Catania (Italy), light radioactive ion beams have been produced through the In Flight Fragmentation method, using 18O and 13C at 55 MeV/A as primary beams impinging on a 9Be production target. Elastic scattering angular distributions of 16C+p and 16C+d at 50 MeV/A, 10Be+p at 56 MeV/A and 13B+d at 52 MeV/A systems were measured by using the CHIMERA (Charge Heavy Ion Mass and Energy Resolving Array) multidetector and kinematical coincidence technique. Abstract

International audience; Preliminary outcome of ISODEC experiment, performed at INFNLNS with the CHIMERA array, are presented. Disintegration path dependence on the entrance-channel N/Z ratios (isospin asymmetries) for the reactions 78Kr+40Ca and 86Kr+48Ca at 10 A*MeV, which give origin to the intermediate systems 118Ba and 134Ba, is being investigated. Staggering effects seem to be present as it was the case of a complementary measurement performed at GANIL at lower energy, i.e. 78,82Kr+40Ca at 5.5 A*MeV.

Abstract

International audience; We present the first results of the ISODEC experiment, performed at the INFN-LNS with the CHIMERA device, in order to study the competition between the various disintegration modes of 118,134Ba compound nuclei produced by bombarding 40,48Ca targets with beams of 78,86Kr at 10 AMeV. This work aims thus to explore the isospin dependence of the decay modes of medium mass compound nuclei formed by fusion processes. The experiment complements data already obtained at 5.5 MeV/A for 78,82Kr+40Ca reactions, studied by Ademard et al. with beams delivered by GANIL facility and by using the INDRA detector.

Abstract

Expérience GANIL; Current pulses induced in a silicon detector by 10 different heavy ion species at known energies around 10 AMeV have been sampled in time at high frequency. Their individual average shapes are quite well reproduced by a fit procedure based on our recent charge carrier collection treatment which considers the progressive extraction of the electrons and holes from the high carrier density zone along the ionizing particle track. This region is assumed to present a supplementary dielectric polarization and consequently a disturbe delectric field.The influence of the nature of the heavy ion on the values of the three fit parameters is analyzed.

Abstract

CORRELATION experiment has been performed at INFN-LNS of Catania, using the 4pi multi-detector CHIMERA, with the aim of exploring correlations between two and multi light particle produced in 12C+24Mg collisions at 35 AMeV. Particular attention has been paid to the decay mechanisms of Hoyle state, an excited resonant state of 12C produced via the triple- alfa process and characterized by a pronounced molecular like structure with three-alfa particles. The study of the Hoyle state is essential for nucleosynthesis, but it also represents a clearly isolated state that can be studied as a three-alfa cluster system.

Abstract

Ternary partitions of the ^{197}Au+^{197}Au system in collisions at 23 A MeV beam energy have been studied. It is observed that the mass number distribution of the lightest fragments, called intermediate mass fragments (IMF), extends up to mass numbers corresponding to partitions into three comparable fragments. The lightest IMFs of A_{IFM} < 20 show well known features of prompt emission originating from the interaction zone (neck) during reseparation. Heavier IMFs (of A_{IFM} > 30) definitely originate from sequential (but not equilibrated) decay of the primary projectile-like fragments (PLF*) (or target-like fragments (TLF*)). The decaying system evidently keeps memory of the neck configuration and consequently the IMFs are emitted collinearly either from the neck side or from the opposite side along the separation axis (polar emission). The new intriguing process of the polar emission dominates for IMFs of A_{IMF} > 50.

Abstract

This contribution presents some recent results relative to the studies of isospin- asymmetric nuclear matter in experiments using the 4π detector CHIMERA and the beams delivered by the Superconductive Cyclotron at INFN-Laboratori Nazionali del Sud in Catania. In particular, we report the results of the experiments named Reverse and Isodec, both included in the EXOCHIM activity supported by the CNSIII of INFN. In the Isodec experiment, the two systems 78Kr+40Ca (neutron poor) and 86Kr+48Ca (neutron rich) at 10A MeV were studied, looking at the competition between the various disintegration decay paths of medium mass compound nuclei, formed by fusion processes and at the isospin influence on the decay process. The results show the presence of a relaxed component in the reaction mechanism, the evidence of staggering effects in the Z distributions, as well as different isotopic composition and neutron enrichment for the reaction products in the two systems. In the Reverse experiment, mass asymmetric projectile-target combinations 124Sn+64Ni and 112Sn+58Ni were investigated at 35A MeV. We provide evidence that the Dynamical Fission process is about two times more probable than the equilibrated (statistical) Fission one in the neutron rich 124Sn+64Ni system with respect to the 112Sn+58Ni neutron poor one. The observed difference in the strength of the dynamical effects could arise from the difference in the entrance channel Isospin (N/Z) content.

Abstract

Mass measurements of the N = Z nuclei 80Zr, 76Sr, 68Se were performed for the first time and a new measurement was obtained for 80Y, using the second cyclotron CSS2 of GANIL as a high-resolution spectrometer. Ions around N = Z were produced by fusion-evaporation in the inverse 58Ni (4.32 MeV A) + 24Mg and 12C reactions. New masses were measured by a time-of-flight method, with a precision of 2 · 10-6, by using well-known masses as references. Study of the double binding energy difference δV np is then performed leading to a strong N = Z Wigner effect around N = Z = 40. Knowledge of new masses in this region also plays a crucial role in the modelling of the astrophysical rp process.

Abstract

Fast electron velocity spectra have been measured by means of the multidetector ARGOS (actually located at Laboratorio Nazionale del Sud, Catania) in a large angular range for atomic collisions induced by a $77A\ensuremath{-}\mathrm{MeV}$ ${}^{40}\mathrm{Ar}$ beam on an Al target. The results are in a fair agreement with a recently proposed relativistic billiard ball model and quasielastic scattering approximation calculations. However, the experimental binary-encounter peak velocities are found to be significantly lower than theoretically predicted. The data also show evidence for an excess of fast electrons in the backward direction.

Abstract

124 Sn+ 64 Ni and 112 Sn+ 58 Ni reactions at 35 A MeV incident energy were studied by using the 688 Si–CsI telescopes of the forward part (1°⩽ θ lab ⩽30°) of CHIMERA multi-detector. The most central part, 1% of the total measured cross section was selected by means of a multidimensional analysis of the experimental observables. The detected isotopes of light fragments (3⩽ Z ⩽8) provided information on breakup temperatures of the emitting sources. The space–time structure of these sources was deduced from fragment correlations. An odd–even effect in the fragment production, enhanced by the isospin of the entrance channel, was observed. Freeze-out unbound neutron-to-proton relative densities for both studied reactions have been deduced, indicating for a possible isospin distillation mechanism related to a phenomenon of the liquid–gas phase transition in asymmetric systems.

Abstract

We report on the first results of in-beam tests performed with the MINIT detection technique. Its modular structure of multilayer ionization chamber with proportional avalanche multiplication allows to detect and identify heavy ions with a very low energy threshold. Its simple mechanical structure, based on a glass microstrip plate, should allow the realization of cheap large-area arrays of similar detectors, in view of the next generation of experiments with radioactive ion beams.

Abstract

Secondary ions of100Ag,100Cd,100In and100Sn were produced via the fusion-evaporation reaction50Cr+58Ni at an energy of 5.1 MeV/nucleon. TheA=100 secondary ions were accelerated in the second cyclotron of GANIL, which was used as a high-resolution mass spectrometer. The masses of the three latter isobars were measured with respect to the abundantly produced100Ag. The known mass of100Cd was very well reproduced and the masses of100In and100Sn were determined for the first time with precisions of 3×10−6 and 10−5, respectively.

Abstract

Velocity spectra of evaporation residues produced in the {sup 35}Cl+{sup 12}C reaction have been measured at bombarding energies of 125, 140, and 154 MeV using time-of-flight techniques. These distributions were used to identify evaporation residues and to separate complete fusion and incomplete fusion components. The results show the presence of small contributions of incomplete fusion components which appear to be due to a cluster transfer reaction mechanism. Angular distributions and total and complete fusion evaporation residue cross sections were extracted at 70, 90, 110, 125, 140, and 154 MeV. The complete fusion cross sections and the deduced critical angular momenta are compared with other experimental data and the predictions of existing models. {copyright} {ital 1997} {ital The American Physical Society}

Abstract

The response of the EJ 299-33 plastic scintillator to energetic charged nuclear particles ranging from isotopes of hydrogen to isotopes of carbon has been determined over a wide energy range using a complex experimental setup and nuclear reactions induced by a 20 AMeV carbon beam on an aluminum target. A strong pulse-shape dependence of the generated light bursts on the impinging particle specie is observed, which makes this scintillator suitable, among other things, for neutron vs. γ - ray identification. Fit formulas are proposed for the normalized light output as a function of particle energy for eleven isotopes of elements ranging from hydrogen to carbon.

Abstract

The production mechanism of intermediate-mass fragments (IMFs) with atomic numbers Z = 3 - 7 is explored in the intermediate energy regime, studying dissipative 48Ca+112Sn and 48Ca+124Sn reactions at E/A = 45MeV. Various aspects of IMF emission patterns point to an inelastic break-up type production mechanism involving excited projectile-like fragment from dissipative interactions. Isotopic yield ratios of identical IMFs from the above two dissipative reactions have been analysed using the "isoscaling" method. Observed trends are correlated with ground-state binding energy systematics and their relevance for an evaluation of the symmetry energy is discussed.

Abstract

The de-excitation of medium mass nuclei 118,134Ba produced in fusion process of 78,86Kr on 40,48Ca targets at 10 AMeV is studied, in order to investigate the isospin dependence of the decay modes; the neutron enrichment of the compound nuclei is in fact expected to play an important role on the emission mechanisms, providing crucial information on fundamental nuclear quantities such as level density, fission barrier, viscosity and symmetry energy. The experiment was performed at INFN-LNS with the 4π multidetector for charged particles CHIMERA, used for the first time in this low energy regime, thanks to a suitable Pulse Shape Discrimination method for charge identification applied to the silicon detectors. The coexistence of deep inelastic collision (DIC) and incomplete fusion (IF) mechanisms has been observed. The shape of the energy spectra and their behavior with angle allowed us to identify two components: The less dissipative one was dominating near the grazing angle. For both components experimental optimum {ital Q} values were derived. Two approaches based on the sum rule (SR) model of Wilczy{acute n}ski were used to calculate DIC and IF contributions to the complex fragment cross sections. Both prescriptions fit reasonably well experimental ejectile cross sections and {ital Q} optimum values. Results of the present investigation support the idea that the DIC can be treated on the same footing as IF in the SR model once the first process is confined in an inner angular momentum window, starting from the maximum fusion angular momentum, with respect to quasielastic processes. {copyright} {ital 1996 The American Physical Society.}

Abstract

Sideward flow values have been determined with the INDRA multidetector for Ar+Ni, Ni+Ni and Xe+Sn systems studied at GANIL in the 30 to 100 A.MeV incident energy range. The balance energies found for Ar+Ni and Ni+Ni systems are in agreement with previous experimental results and theoretical calculations. Negative sideward flow values have been measured. The possible origins of such negative values are discussed. They could result from a more important contribution of evaporated particles with respect to the contribution of promptly emitted particles at mid-rapidity. But effects induced by the methods used to reconstruct the reaction plane cannot be totally excluded. Complete tests of these methods are presented and the origins of the ``auto-correlation'' effect have been traced back. For heavy fragments, the observed negative flow values seem to be mainly due to the reaction plane reconstruction methods. For light charged particles, these negative values could result from the dynamics of the collisions and from the reaction plane reconstruction methods as well. Abstract

We have recently evaluated the quality of γ -ray angular distributions that can be extracted in particle-gamma coincidence measurements using the CHIMERA detector at LNS. γ -rays have been detected using the CsI(Tl) detectors of the spherical part of the CHIMERA array. Very clean γ -rays angular distributions were extracted in reactions induced by different stable beams impinging on 12 C thin targets. The results evidenced an effect of projectile spin flip on the γ -rays angular distributions. γ -particle coincidence measurements were also performed in reactions induced by neutron rich exotic beams produced through in-flight fragmentation at LNS. In recent experiments also the Farcos array was used to improve energy and angular resolution measurements of the detected charged particles. Results obtained with both stable and radioactive beams are reported.

Abstract

We present a new experimental method to correlate the isotopic composition of intermediate mass fragments (IMF) emitted at midrapidity in semiperipheral collisions with the emission timescale: IMFs emitted in the early stage of the reaction show larger values of $\ensuremath{\langle}N/Z\ensuremath{\rangle}$ isospin asymmetry, stronger angular anisotropies, and reduced odd-even staggering effects in neutron to proton ratio $\ensuremath{\langle}N/Z\ensuremath{\rangle}$ distributions than those produced in sequential statistical emission. All these effects support the concept of isospin ``migration'', that is sensitive to the density gradient between participant and quasispectator nuclear matter, in the so called neck fragmentation mechanism. By comparing the data to a stochastic mean field (SMF) simulation we show that this method gives valuable constraints on the symmetry energy term of nuclear equation of state at subsaturation densities. An indication emerges for a linear density dependence of the symmetry energy.

Abstract

Effects related to the neutron to proton ratio (N/Z) degree of freedom in nuclear collisions 40Ca + 40Ca, 40Ca + 48Ca and 48Ca + 48Ca at 25 MeV per nucleon, analyzed by means of the Chimera multi-detector, have been investigated. Strong isotopic effects are found in mass distributions of light isotopes. Moreover, the competition between various reaction mechanisms at semi-central impact parameters seems to be influenced by the neutron richness of the total system formed.
