An attachment of a particle on a bubble is a very complex process due to the surface chemistry of bubbles and particles, and hence it is difficult to describe the bubble–particle attachment mechanism from first principles. This paper focuses on better understanding of the bubble–particle attachment mechanism by predicting induction time from first principles for the glass beads–dodecyl amine hydrochloride (DAH) system. The induction time for the bubble–particle attachment was determined using an optically based attachment timer. The zeta potentials of bubbles and glass particles were measured by the microelectrophoresis method. The contact angle between a bubble and a particle was obtained using atomic force microscopy. In these calculations, the overall disjoining pressure and the overall energy of bubble–particle interactions comprised a sum of the DLVO and non-DLVO contributions. The overall energy of interactions was used to determine the critical film thickness, while the overall disjoining pressure was employed to estimate the wetting film drainage time using the theoretical models. By comparing experimental data and theoretical models for drainage of wetting films, it was found that the attachment of glass particles to air bubbles in the presence of DAH is accelerated due to the mobility of the air–water interface (of the wetting films), which has incorrectly been assumed as rigid (fully immobile) in the classical Stefan–Reynolds theory. The interaction forces between silica surfaces with various degrees of hydrophobicity were measured using colloidal probe atomic force microscopy to clarify the relationship between the hydrophobicity of the surfaces and hydrophobic attraction in detail. The interaction forces between silica surfaces pre-hydrophobised with octadecyltrichlorosilane were measured in aqueous solutions with three different (cationic, anionic, and nonionic) surfactants. Hydrophobic attraction was observed between surfaces from 10 to 15 nm without surfactant, and the range of this attraction decreased when the surface hydrophobicity decreased with increasing surfactant concentration. The hydrophobic attraction disappeared when the surface contact angle was below 80°–90° in the presence of all surfactants used in this study. The range of the hydrophobic attraction was found to depend strongly on the contact angle and not on the surfactant type and concentration. The adhesion force was also highly dependent on the contact angle and comparable to the theoretical capillary force. Here we report a new study on the boundary conditions for the flow of a simple liquid in a confined geometry obtained by measuring hydrodynamic drainage forces with colloid probe atomic force microscopy (AFM). In this work, we provide experimental data obtained using a best practice experimental protocol and fitted with a new theoretical calculation (Zhu, L.; Attard, P.; Neto, C. Langmuir2010, submitted for publication, preceding paper). We investigated the hydrodynamic forces acting on a silica colloid probe approaching a hydrophobized silicon surface in a single-component viscous Newtonian liquid (di-n-octylphthalate), a partially wetting system. The measured average slip lengths were in the range of 24−31 nm at approach velocities of between 10 and 80 μm/s. Using our experimental approach, the presence of nanoparticle contaminants in the system can be indentified, which is important because it has been shown that nanoparticles lead to a large apparent slip length. The adhesion force between the surfaces and various compounds is a fundamental feature that causes formation and modification of compounds and can be used to various applications. Adhesion force performs in several main ways that recognition and monitoring of this force would be very useful in the material study. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) is a powerful tool to investigate interaction forces at the micro and nanoscale. Cantilever stiffness, dimensions and geometry of the tip can be chosen according to the requirements of the specific application, in terms of spatial resolution and force sensitivity. Colloidal probes (CPs), obtained by attaching a spherical particle to a tipless (TL) cantilever, offer several advantages for accurate force measurements: tunable and well‐characterisable radius; higher averaging capabilities (at the expense of spatial resolution) and sensitivity to weak interactions; a well‐defined interaction geometry (sphere on flat), which allows accurate and reliable data fitting by means of analytical models. The dynamics of standard AFM probes has been widely investigated, and protocols have been developed for the calibration of the cantilever spring constant. Nevertheless, the dynamics of CPs, and in particular of large CPs, with radius well above 10 μm and mass comparable, or larger, than the cantilever mass, is at present still poorly characterized. Here we describe the fabrication and calibration of (large) CPs. We present a method by which multi-harmonic signals acquired during a normal tapping mode (amplitude modulated) AFM scan of a sample in air or vacuum with standard microcantilevers can be used to map quantitatively the local mechanical properties of the sample such as elastic modulus, adhesion, and indentation. The approach is based on the observation that during the tapping mode operation in air or vacuum, the 0th and 2nd harmonic signals of microcantilever vibration are encountered under most operating conditions and can be mapped with sufficient signal to noise ratio. By measuring the amplitude and phase of the driven harmonic as well as the 0th and 2nd harmonic observables, we find analytical/semi-analytical formulas that relate these multi-harmonic observables to local mechanical properties for several classical tip-sample interaction models. Least squares estimation of the local mechanical properties is performed pixel by pixel. The worldwide emergence of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in pathogenic microorganisms, including bacteria and viruses due to a plethora of reasons, such as genetic mutation and indiscriminate use of antimicrobials, is a major challenge faced by the healthcare sector today. One of the issues at hand is to effectively screen and isolate resistant strains from sensitive ones. Utilizing the distinct nanomechanical properties (e.g., elasticity, intracellular turgor pressure, and Young's modulus) of microbes can be an intriguing way to achieve this; while atomic force microscopy (AFM), with or without modification of the tips, presents an effective way to investigate such biophysical properties of microbial surfaces or an entire microbial cell. Additionally, advanced AFM instruments, apart from being compatible with aqueous environments—as often is the case for biological samples—can measure the adhesive forces acting between AFM tips/cantilevers (conjugated to bacterium/virion, substrates, and molecules) and target cells/surfaces to develop informative force-distance curves. Moreover, such force spectroscopies provide an idea of the nature of intercellular interactions (e.g., receptor-ligand) or propensity of microbes to aggregate into densely packed layers, that is, the formation of biofilms —a property of resistant strains (e.g., Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa). This mini-review will revisit the use of single-cell force spectroscopy (SCFS) and single-molecule force spectroscopy (SMFS) that are emerging as powerful additions to the arsenal of researchers in the struggle against resistant microbes, identify their strengths and weakness and, finally, prioritize some future directions for research. Measurements of Young’s moduli are mostly evaluated using strong assumptions, such as sample homogeneity and isotropy. At the same time, descriptions of measurement parameters often lack detailed specifications. Many of these assumptions are, for soft hydrogels especially, not completely valid and the complexity of hydrogel microindentation demands more sophisticated experimental procedures in order to describe their elastic properties more accurately. We created an algorithm that automates indentation data analysis as a basis for the evaluation of large data sets with consideration of the influence of indentation depth on the measured Young’s modulus. The algorithm automatically determines the Young’s modulus in indentation regions where it becomes independent of the indentation depth and furthermore minimizes the error from fitting an elastic model to the data. This approach is independent of the chosen elastic fitting model and indentation device. With this, we are able to evaluate large amounts of indentation curves recorded on many different sample positions and can therefore apply statistical methods to overcome deviations due to sample inhomogeneities. To prove the applicability of our algorithm, we carried out a systematic analysis of how the indentation speed, indenter size and sample thickness affect the determination of Young’s modulus from atomic force microscope (AFM) indentation curves on polyacrylamide (PAAm) samples. We chose the Hertz model as the elastic fitting model for this proof of principle of our algorithm and found that all of these parameters influence the measured Young’s moduli to a certain extent. Typically, it is difficult to analyze and design a micro/nanofluid system, and the design process cannot follow the traditional law of hydrodynamics. The boundary condition is very important in the applications of a micro/nanofluid system. The existence of boundary slip can reduce the hydrodynamic resistance and enhance fluid flow. How to accurately determine the dynamic boundary conditions is increasingly concerned by researchers. Atomic force microscope (AFM) is proven to be the most advanced experimental instrument for studying the characteristics of the surface and the interaction interface. Most studies on the application of atomic force microscopy to the measurement of the boundary slip do not describe a systematic standard process, leading to many differences in the measurement results. In this paper, a standard process of measuring slip on smooth and flat surfaces is developed, including the data processing methods that minimize the interference factors in the original data as well as simplify the data expression. The stability of particle suspensions, which is important in numerous industrial processes, is generally dominated by the interaction forces between the suspended particles. Understanding the interaction forces between surfaces in liquids is therefore fundamentally important in order to evaluate and control how particulates, including fluid droplets in emulsions and air bubbles in foams, behave in various systems. The invention of the surface force apparatus (SFA) enabled the direct measurement of interaction forces in liquids with molecular level resolution and it has led to remarkable progress in understanding surface forces in detail. Following the SFA, the application of atomic force microscopy (AFM) to force measurement has further extended the possibility of force measurements to a broad field of research, mainly due to the range of materials that can be employed. This review provides an overview of developments in the investigation of interaction forces between surfaces using AFM. In this work, we present new results of atomic force microscopy (AFM) force curves over pure ice at different temperatures, performed with two different environmental chambers and different kinds of AFM tips. Our results provide insight to resolve the controversy on the interpretation of experimental AFM curves on the ice--air interface for determining the thickness of the quasi-liquid layer (QLL). The use of a Mini Environmental Chamber (mEC) that provides an accurate control of the temperature and humidity of the gases in contact with the sample allowed us for the first time to get force curves over the ice--air interface without jump-in (jump of the tip onto the ice surface, widely observed in previous studies). These results suggest a QLL thickness below 1 nm within the explored temperature range (-2 °). This upper bound is significantly lower than most of the previous AFM results, which suggests that previous authors overestimate the equilibrium QLL thickness, due to temperature gradients, or indentation of ice during the jumpin. Additionally, we proved that the hydrophobicity of AFM tips affects significantly the results of the experiments. Overall, this work shows that, if one chooses the experimental conditions properly, the QLL thicknesses obtained by AFM lie over the lower bound of the highly disperse results reported in the literature. This allows estimating upper boundaries for the QLL thicknesses, which is relevant to validate QLL theories and to improve multiphase atmospheric chemistry models. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

ABSTRACT In this article, a compilation of results on direct force measurements between colloidal particles in monovalent salts carried out with the colloidal probe technique based on Atomic Force Microscopy was presented. The interaction forces between similar and dissimilar particles was studied and it was concluded that, in general, these force profiles may be satisfactorily quantified by the DLVO theory down to distances of few nanometers. However, in the specific case where the charge of one of the involved particle is close to neutral, it was found that the surface potential of this particle may change its sign depending on the sign of charge of the opposite particle. In this respect, the assumption that the surface potential of a particle is a property only related to the particle surface features and the bulk properties is called into question. Microsc. Res. Removable complete and partial dentures are supported by the residual alveolar ridges consisting of mucosa, submucosa, periosteum, and bone. An understanding of the biomechanical behavior of the oral mucosa is essential in order to improve the denture-bearing foundations for complete and partially edentulous patients. The purpose of this paper was to examine the biomechanical behavior of the soft tissues supporting a removable denture and develop a model for that reason. Keratinized oral mucosa blocks with their underlying bone were harvested from the maxillary palatal area adjacent to the edentulous ridges of a cadaver. The compressive response of the oral mucosa was tested by using atomic force microscopy. The specimens were first scanned in order their topography to be obtained. The mechanical properties of the specimens were tested using a single crystal silicon pyramidal tip, which traversed toward the keratinized oral mucosa specimens. Loading-unloading cycles were registered and four mathematical models were tested using MATLAB to note which one approximates the force-displacement curve as close as possible: a. spherical, b. conical, c. third order polynomial, d. Murphy (fourth order polynomial, non-linear Hertzian based). The third order polynomial model showed the best accuracy in representing the force-displacement data of the tested specimens. The thermodynamic properties of gases have been understood primarily through phase diagrams of bulk gases. However, observations of gases confined in a nanometer space have posed a challenge to the principles of classical thermodynamics. Here, we investigated interfacial structures comprising either O2 or N2 between water and a hydrophobic solid surface by using advanced atomic force microscopy techniques. Ordered epitaxial layers and cap-shaped nanostructures were observed. In addition, pancake-shaped disordered layers that had grown on top of the epitaxial base layers were observed in oxygen-supersaturated water. We propose that hydrophobic solid surfaces provide low-chemical-potential sites at which gas molecules dissolved in water can be adsorbed. The structures are further stabilized by interfacial water. Here we show that gas molecules can agglomerate into a condensed form when confined in a sufficiently small space under ambient conditions. The crystalline solid surface may even induce a solid-gas state when the gas-substrate interaction is significantly stronger than the gas-gas interaction. A modified AFM technique was used to measure interactions between graphitic carbon black particles and, hence, compare effectiveness of dispersants for stable dispersions. The carbon black dispersions were prepared in water using three polymeric dispersants Triton X100, Triton X405 and Lugalvan BNO12. The surfactants were selected based on a previous study with PE/F103 without aromatic ring. That surfactant had attractive interactions emphasizing need for aromatic ring in anchoring group. Attractive interactions between surfaces were observed in water and in absence of polymers. Lack of any attractive interactions in the presence of polymers proved that the selected dispersants are effective stabilizers. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Atomic force microscopy (AFM) quantitatively maps viscoelastic parameters of polymers on the nanoscale by several methods. The loss tangent, the ratio between dissipated and stored energy, was measured on a blend of thermoplastic polymer materials by a dynamic contact method, contact resonance, and by a recently developed loss tangent measurement by amplitude modulation AFM. Contact resonance measurements were performed both with dual AC resonance tracking and band excitation (BE), allowing for a reference-free measurement of the loss tangent. Amplitude modulation AFM was performed where a recent interpretation of the phase signal under certain operating conditions allows for the loss tangent to be calculated. The loss tangent measurements were compared with values expected from time–temperature superposed frequency-dependent dynamical mechanical curves of materials and reveal that the loss tangents determined from the BE contact resonance method provide the most accurate values. Silicon dioxide films are extensively used in nano and micro-electromechanical systems. Here we studied the influence of an external electric field on the mechanical properties of a SiO2 film by using nanoindentation technique of atomic force microscopy (AFM) and friction force microscopy (FFM). Agiant augmentation of the relative elastic modulus was observed by increasing the localized electric field. A slight decrease in friction coefficients was also clearly observed by using FFM with the increase of applied tip voltage. The reduction of the friction coefficients is consistent with the great enhancement of sample hardness by considering the indentation-induced deformation during the friction measurements. Present atomic force microscopes are capable of acquiring large data volumes by point using point force–distance spectroscopic measurements. Even if different trade names and different technical implementations are used, for most of these techniques a force–distance curve in every image pixel is measured, this curve is immediately fitted by some theoretical dependence and results are displayed as a mechanical properties channel (Young modulus, adhesion, etc). Results are processed during the measurement directly in the scanning probe microscopy controller or, after it, by manufacturer provided software. In this paper, we present a software tool for independent numerical processing of such data, including more numerical models for the force–distance curve evaluation and including a simple estimate of uncertainties related to the fitting procedure. The so called 'bee phenomenon' in bitumen has been investigated by means of AFM quantitative nanomechanical property mapping. Bees are a phenomenon that can be observed by topography measurements using AFM. The characteristic 'bee' appearance comes from regions with alternating higher and lower bands in the surface topography of bitumen, which are surrounded by a flat area. The proposed mechanism for bee formation is phase separation and differential contraction during cooling from melt temperatures leading to wrinkling due to differences in the elastic modulus of the material phases. Using a laminate wrinkling model, the thickness of the bee laminate was calculated from the wavelengths and Young's moduli of the bee laminate and the matrix. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) has now become a powerful technique for investigating on a molecular level, surface forces, nanomechanical properties of deformable particles, biomolecular interactions, kinetics, and dynamic processes. This paper specifically focuses on the analysis of AFM force curves collected on biological systems, in particular, bacteria. The goal is to provide fully automated tools to achieve theoretical interpretation of force curves on the basis of adequate, available physical models. In this respect, we propose two algorithms, one for the processing of approach force curves and another for the quantitative analysis of retraction force curves. In the former, electrostatic interactions prior to contact between AFM probe and bacterium are accounted for and mechanical interactions operating after contact are described in terms of Hertz- Hooke formalism. Retraction force curves are analyzed on the basis of the Freely Jointed Chain model. For both algorithms, the quantitative reconstruction of force curves is based on the robust detection of critical points (jumps, changes of slope or changes of curvature) which mark the transitions between the various relevant interactions taking place between the AFM tip and the studied sample during approach and retraction. Once the key regions of separation distance and indentation are detected, the physical parameters describing the relevant interactions operating in these regions are extracted making use of regression procedure for fitting experiments to theory. The flexibility, accuracy and strength of the algorithms are illustrated with the processing of two force-volume images, which collect a large set of approach and retraction curves measured on a single biological surface. For each force-volume image, several maps are generated, representing the spatial distribution of the searched physical parameters as estimated for each pixel of the force-volume image. The jump-to-contact phenomenon of atomic force microscopy measurement is investigated. The force-approach relation for the adhesive contact based on the Lennard-Jones potential with the Derjaguin approximation is analyzed. For a small Tabor parameter, the force-approach relation is similar to that with the van der Waals force between two rigid spheres. For a large Tabor parameter, the force-approach relation is similar to that with the van der Waals force between two deformable spheres. Empirical formulas for the approaching part of the force-approach curve are proposed. The jump-to-contact distance can be obtained by using the semi-empirical formulas. Interfiber friction in paper exists in fiber suspensions, fiber flocs, and fiber networks. The interfiber friction force is, therefore, important both in papermaking and in the use of paper. The objective of this research is to develop a methodology using atomic force microscopy (AFM) for the direct measurement of the friction force between pulp fibers. Different factors such as AFM scanning velocity, contact area, and fiber surface roughness were investigated. The results show that AFM is an effective tool for measuring micro-scale interfiber friction forces. Both AFM scanning velocity and fiber surface roughness affect the measured results. A quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation monitoring (QCM-D) was used to study the adsorption of the layer formed by silica nanoparticles (SNP) and cellulose nanofibrils (NFC) together with cationic polyacrylamide (C-PAM) on cellulose surface, accompanied by use of atomic force microscope (AFM) to study the interactions between cellulose surfaces. The purpose was to understand the multilayer buildup compared to complex structure adsorption. The layer thickness and consequently also the repulsion between surfaces increased with each addition step during layer formation in the SNP-C-PAM systems, whereas the second addition of C-PAM decreased the repulsion in the case of NFC-C-PAM multilayer formation. An exceptionally high repulsion between surfaces was observed when nanofibrillar cellulose was added. This together with the extremely high dissipation values recorded with QCM-D indicated that nanofibrillar cellulose formed a loose and thick layer containing a lot of water. The multilayer systems formed fully and uniformly covered the surfaces. Silica nanoparticles were able to penetrate inside the loose C-PAM structure due to their small size. In contrast, NFC formed individual layers between C-PAM layers. The complex of C-PAM and SNP formed only a partly covered surface, leading to long-ranged pull-off force. A novel calibration method is proposed for determining lateral forces in atomic force microscopy (AFM), by introducing an angle conversion factor, which is defined as the ratio of the twist angle of a cantilever to the corresponding lateral signal. This factor greatly simplifies the calibration procedures. Once the angle conversion factor is determined in AFM, the lateral force calibration factors of any rectangular cantilever can be obtained by simple computation without further experiments. To determine the angle conversion factor, this study focuses on the determination of the twist angle of a cantilever during lateral force calibration in AFM. Since the twist angle of a cantilever cannot be directly measured in AFM, the angles are obtained by means of the moment balance equations between a rectangular AFM cantilever and a simple commercially available step grating. To eliminate the effect of the adhesive force, the gradients of the lateral signals and the twist angles as a function of normal force are used in calculating the angle conversion factor. To verify reliability and reproducibility of the method, two step gratings with different heights and two different rectangular cantilevers were used in lateral force calibration in AFM. The way in which common hair care products, such as conditioner, deposit onto and change hair properties is of interest in beauty care science, as these properties are closely tied to product performance. The binding interaction between conditioner and the hair surface is one of the important factors in determining the conditioner thickness distribution and consequently the proper functions of conditioner. In this study, atomic force microscopy was used to obtain the local conditioner thickness distribution, adhesive forces and effective Young's modulus mapping of various hair surfaces. The conditioner thickness was extracted by measuring the forces on the atomic force microscopy tip as it approached, contacted and pushed through the conditioner layer. The effective Young's moduli of various hair surfaces were calculated from the force distance curves using Hertz analysis. The intrinsic binding interactions between different silicones and the hair surface on the microscopic scale, as well as their effect on the effective Young's modulus of the hair, are also discussed. Characterization of the cellular structure and chemical and physical properties of hair are essential to develop better cosmetic products and advance the biological and cosmetic sciences. Although the morphology of the fine cellular structure of human hair has traditionally been investigated using scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy can be used for characterization in ambient conditions without requiring specific sample preparations and surface treatment. In this study, the tapping and torsional resonance modes in an atomic force microscope are compared for measurements of stiffness and viscoelastic properties. The materials were mapped using amplitude and phase angle imaging. The torsional resonance mode showed advantages in resolving the in-plane (lateral) heterogeneity of materials. This mode was used for investigating and characterizing the fine cellular structure of human hair. Various cellular structures (such as the cortex and the cuticle) of human hair and fine sublamellar structures of the cuticle, such as the A-layer, the exocuticle, the endocuticle and the cell membrane complex were easily identified. The distribution and thickness of conditioner on the treated hair surface affects the tribological properties of hair. The potential of phase-sensitive acoustic microscopy (PSAM) for characterizing polymer thin films is reviewed in comparison to atomic force microscopy (AFM). This comparison is based on results from three-dimensional vector contrast imaging and multimodal imaging using PSAM and AFM, respectively. The similarities and differences between the information that can be derived from the AFM topography and phase images, and the PSAM phase and amplitude micrographs are examined. In particular, the significance of the PSAM phase information for qualitative and quantitative characterization of the polymer films is examined for systems that generate surface waves, and those that do not. The formation and application of nanoscale materials is revolutionising many industrial sectors. The unique properties and functionality offered at this length scale are attractive and the demand for new materials and new production routes is high. This challenging field of research incorporates materials science, engineering and advanced characterisation techniques. The range of materials that are produced at the nanoscale is increasing rapidly; this review will focus specifically on the generation of nanoporous materials from anodic electrochemical routes. The method of dealloying as a route to the formation of nanoporous materials in terms of the processing, alteration and potential applications will be discussed. Factors such as alloy composition, electrolyte and applied potential are all seen to be critical factors on the resultant morphology. This method will then be compared with other available electrochemical routes to form nanoporous materials. It is seen that irrespective of the synthesis employed, the manufacturing method plays an important role on the characteristics of the pore formation in terms of the resultant morphologies and the properties they exhibit. This review critically summarizes the recent advances of the microcantilever-based force sensors for atomic force microscope (AFM) applications. They are one the most common mechanical spring–mass systems and are extremely sensitive to changes in the resonant frequency, thus finding numerous applications especially for molecular sensing. Specifically, we comment on the latest progress in research on the deflection detection systems, fabrication, coating and functionalization of the microcantilevers and their application as bio- and chemical sensors. Surface nanobubbles at hydrophobic interfaces now attract much attention in various fields but their role in wetting-related phenomena is still unclear. Herein, we report the effect of a preliminary contact of "hot" solids with cold water previously proposed for generation of surface nanobubbles, on wettability of compact materials and flotation of particulate galena (PbS), sphalerite (ZnS), and Pb-Zn sulfide ore. Atomic force microscopy was applied to visualize the nanobubbles at galena crystals heated in air and contacted with cold water; X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy was used to characterize the surface composition of minerals. Contact angles measured with the sessile drop of cold water were found to increase when enhancing the support temperature from 0 to 80 °C for sphalerite and silica, and to pass a maximum at 40–60 °C for galena and pyrite (FeS2) probably due to oxidation of sulfides. The temperature pretreatment depressed the recovery of sulfides in collectorless schemes and improved the potassium butyl xanthate-assisted flotation both for single minerals and Gorevskoye Pb-Zn ore. The results suggest that the surface nanobubbles prepared using the temperature difference promote flotation if minerals are rather hydrophobic and insignificantly oxidized, so the addition of collector and activator (for sphalerite) is necessary. Fast, accurate, and robust nanomechanical measurements are intensely studied in materials science, applied physics, and molecular biology. Amplitude modulation force microscopy (tapping mode) is the most established nanoscale characterization technique of surfaces for air and liquid environments. However, its quantitative capabilities lag behind its high spatial resolution and robustness. We develop a general method to transform the observables into quantitative force measurements. The force reconstruction algorithm has been deduced on the assumption that the observables (amplitude and phase shift) are slowly varying functions of the tip–surface separation. The accuracy and applicability of the method is validated by numerical simulations and experiments. The method is valid for liquid and air environments, small and large free amplitudes, compliant and rigid materials, and conservative and non-conservative forces. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A method suitable for the calibration of the spring constants of all torsional and lateral eigenmodes of micro- and nanocantilever sensors is described. Such sensors enable nanomechanical measurements and the characterization of nanomaterials, for example with atomic force microscopy. The method presented involves the interaction of a flow of fluid from a microchannel with the cantilever beam. Forces imparted by the flow cause the cantilever to bend and induce a measurable change of the torsional and lateral resonance frequencies. From the frequency shifts the cantilever spring constants can be determined. The method does not involve physical contact between the cantilever or its tip and a hard surface. As such it is non-invasive and does not risk damage to the cantilever. Experimental data is presented for two rectangular microcantilevers with fundamental flexural spring constants of 0.046 and 0.154 N m−1. The experimentally determined torsional stiffness values are compared with those obtained by the Sader method. We demonstrate that the torsional spring constants can be readily calibrated using the method with an accuracy of around 15%. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The size of (nano) particles is a key parameter used in controlling their function. The particle size is also important in order to understand their physical and chemical properties and regulate their number in health and safety issues. In this work, the geometric diameters of polystyrene spheres of nominal diameter 100 nm are measured using atomic force microscopy. The measurements are based on the apex height and on the average distance between neighbouring spheres when they form a close-packed monolayer on a flat mica substrate. The most important influence parameters for the determination of the geometric diameter are the lateral air gaps and deformation of the spheres. The lateral air gaps are caused by significant size variations of the individual spheres, and a correction is calculated based on the simulation of packing of spheres. The deformation of the spheres is caused mainly by capillary forces acting when they are in contact with each other or with the mica substrate. Based on calculated capillary forces and the literature values of the elastic properties of the polystyrene and mica, the deformation is estimated to be 2 nm with a standard uncertainty of 2 nm. The geometric diameter of the polystyrene spheres was measured with a combined standard uncertainty of [?]3 nm. The measured vertical diameter of 92.3 nm and the certified mobility equivalent diameter measured by differential mobility analysis (DMA) are marginally consistent at a confidence level of 95%.
