Using the N2-N2 interaction potential of van der Avoird et al. (1986) rotationally inelastic collision cross sections have been computed within the infinite order sudden (IOS) approximation, assuming the molecules are distinguishable. Methods for enforcing detailed balance and correcting for effects of inelasticity, which are ignored in the IOS approximation, are considered, including the energy corrected sudden (ECS) method. Suitably averaged cross sections are compared with experimental Raman Q-branch linewidths for temperatures from 295 to 1500 K and with recently measured room temperature state-to-state rates. Agreement is rather good, especially if ECS corrections are applied.

Earlier theoretical descriptions of interaction forces and collision dynamics in the H2O-He system (Palma et al., 1988; Green et al., 1991) are improved by calculating the interaction at additional orientations and by including diffuse functions in the molecular orbital expansion basis set. The improvements make substantial changes to the potential energy surface, but make only small changes in predicted microwave pressure broadening coefficients. The qualitative temperature dependence and relative widths of different lines appear to be converged with respect to successive improvements to the theoretical description of this system. Remaining discrepancies with available data must reflect problems with the experimental values.

An interaction potential for H2O-Ar that was recently determined from spectra of the van der Waals complex by Cohen and Saykally (1990) is used with accurate molecular scattering calculations to predict line broadening parameters for the 183 and 380 GHz transitions of water vapor. Theoretical values are about 15 percent higher than experiment. A comparison of experimental and theoretical pressure broadening cross sections for water in argon is presented.

Theoretical computations of broadening parameters are reported for three microwave lines of H2O in a bath of He atoms. The potential-energy surfaces employed are corrected for basis-set superposition error, and their reliability is checked by repeating the calculations with a different basis set for orbital expansion. The results are presented in extensive tables and discussed in detail. The corrections applied are shown to have a significant impact on the accuracy of the room-temperature broadenings determined: 8.9 sq A for the 22.2-GHz line, 11.8 sq A for the 183,3-GHz line, and 10.0 sq A for the 380.2-GHz line, in good agreement with published experimental data. The importance of collisional broadening for the atmospheric transmission of radiation and for remote-sensing applications is indicated.

The line-shape cross sections of vibrational Raman Q-branch spectra are determined theoretically for D2 and H2 in Ar. The calculations are based on accurate close-coupling matrices and the intermolecular potential obtained by Le Roy and Hutson (1987) from spectra of van der Waals complexes. The calculation techniques applied are explained, and the results are presented in tables and graphs and discussed in detail with reference to published experimental data. Agreement to within about 25 percent is obtained for the line widths, but the line shifts are found to be a factor of two smaller than the measured values, and a temperature dependence of line-width cross sections is predicted which is not observed experimentally.

An interaction potential for HCl-Ar recently derived from spectra of van der Waals complexes (Hutson,1988) has been used to obtain converged close-coupling scattering S matrices from which pressure broadening (linewidth, line shift, and line coupling) cross sections have been computed within the Fano-Ben-Reuven formalism. Linewidths agree well with experimental data with the exception of the 0-1 line at low temperatures (an error of about 15 percent at 125 K). Line shifts, especially the largest, for the 0-1 line, are also in reasonable accord with experimental data. Line coupling is predicted to be quite small. The coupled-states molecular scattering approximation is found to be accurate except at very low collision energies. The infinite-order sudden approximations, on the other hand, is not reliable for this system. Inelastic scattering out of the spectroscopic levels accounts for only a fraction of the linewidth at thermal energies, especially in the lower rotational levels.

Results are presented from calculations of several Stokes-Raman Q branch line shapes of the v = 0-1 transition of D2 in He in the low pressure regime where Dicke narrowing is observed. Consideration is given to five different approximations: a form of the generalized Hess theory (Monchick and Hunter, 1987), two high pressure asymptotes of Hess's method, the moment method of Corey and McCourt (1984), and a collision kernel method. It is found that the generalized Hess and the collision kernel methods have the best agreement with experiments.

Collision-induced widths and shifts for Raman Q-branch transitions of D2 in He were calculated from S matrices obtained with converged close coupling scattering calculations on an accurate theoretical interaction potential. Results agree well with experimental values. Discrepancies between experimental line shifts and theoretical values from an earlier study (Blackmore et al., 1988) are traced to a computational error in that work. The effects of vibrational inelasticity and of centrifugal distortion on energy levels and on potential matrix elements, all of which were ignored in the earlier study, are explicitly considered here and found to be small.

The pressure broadening and line coupling cross sections in the Fano-Ben Reuven theory of line shapes are calculated for bending bands of CO2 in a bath of He atoms. Molecular collision dynamics are simplified by invoking the infinite order sudden (IOS) approximation for molecular rotational and vibrational angular momentum in a manner similar to but not identical with the method developed by Clary and shown to be accurate for CO2-He. Numerical values are obtained using a pairwise additive interaction potential developed by Clary. Predictions are in good accord with data for various infrared bands and pure rotational Raman spectra. It is found that all pressure broadening and state-to-state cross sections depend on only a few dynamical factors (generalized IOS cross sections) and are therefore closely interrelated. Results are used to assess models developed previously to analyze line shapes in this and similar systems.

Theoretical potentials for rotational excitation of H2O by He were constructed via several methods, all of which start with a large basis set SCF interaction. The semiempirical Hartree-Fock with damped dispersion model adds a damped long-range attraction with parameters adjusted to fit experimental total differential cross sections. Purely ab initio potentials add correlation energies obtained via perturbation theory (MP2 and MP4) or a variational method (ICF1). Scattering calculations were performed on all surfaces to compare wih available beam scattering and pressure broadening data and to assess sensitivity of state-to-state rates to uncertainties in the potential. From comparison with the limited experimental data, the ICF1 surface appears to be marginally better than the MP4 surface. Thermal rates calculated from this surface should be accurate to better than 50 percent, at least for the larger, more important rates.

Numerical calculations are presented for the high-pressure dependence of the linewidths of the D2 polarized Q branch of the Stokes Raman nu = 0-1 transition. A comparison is made with the experimental linewidths. The relationship between the line shape and S matrices is reviewed as well as the calculation of the latter for the D2-He system.

The first accurate theoretical values for off-diagonal (i.e., line-coupling) pressure-broadening cross sections are presented. Calculations were done for CO perturbed by He at thermal collision energies using an accurate ab initio potential energy surface. Converged close coupling, i.e., numerically exact values, were obtained for coupling to the R(0) and R(2) lines. These were used to test the coupled states (CS) and infinite order sudden (IOS) approximate scattering methods. CS was found to be of quantitative accuracy (a few percent) and has been used to obtain coupling values for lines to R(10). IOS values are less accurate, but, owing to their simplicity, may nonetheless prove useful as has been recently demonstrated.

Rotational excitation rates have been computed for the asymmetric top molecule SiC2 in collisions with low-energy He atoms. The intermolecular forces were obtained from an electron gas model, and collision dynamics were treated within the infinite-order sudden approximation. Total excitation rates, i.e., summed over final levels, are expected to be accurate to about 50 percent, and the larger state-to-state rates are likely to be within a factor of about 2 of the correct values, although some of the smaller (and less important) rates may be less accurate. These rates are also thought to reflect, within this level of accuracy, rates for excitation by collisions with H2 molecules.
