Coastal El Niño is an extreme situation of El Niño‐Southern Oscillation (ENSO) with sea surface temperature warming confined in the far‐eastern equatorial Pacific. Some coastal El Niños evolve into a basin scale El Niño, and some don't, implying a diversity in ENSO evolutions after a coastal El Niño event. In this study, the coastal El Niños in 2017 and 2023 are selected to examine their subsequent evolution. Both coastal El Niños developed after a La Niña, with the former followed by a La Niña and the latter by a basin‐scale El Niño. The cold (warm) subsurface temperatures in 2017 (2023) were key factors leading to the divergent ENSO evolution. Convection over the western tropical Pacific and the atmospheric circulation anomalies across the equatorial Pacific also contributed to the differences. Model predictions suggest that differences in ENSO evolution after a coastal El Niño are associated with differences in ENSO predictability. They are less studied, especially, in terms of temporal evolution and longer‐term development. Here, we examine the divergent evolution of ENSO conditions in the tropical Pacific after the coastal El Niños in 2017 and 2023. This subsequent divergent evolution of these events was associated with both preceding subsurface ocean heat content levels, convection over the western tropical Pacific, and concurrent atmospheric circulation. Specifically, preceding subsurface ocean cooling combined with low‐level easterly wind anomalies led to the growth of La Niña after the coastal El Niño in 2017, while strong preceding subsurface ocean warming led to the growth of El Niño after the coastal El Niño in 2023. These differences in the evolution of tropical Pacific Ocean conditions after a coastal El Niño were associated with different levels of ENSO predictability. The rainy season typically terminates over the area of central northern China (CNC) in late August with the rapid retreat of the East Asian summer monsoon (EASM). However, the CNC suffered continuous heavy rainfall in September 2021. The monthly accumulative precipitation amount broke its historical record since 1961 and caused severe floods. The present study ascribes this extreme rainfall event to the westward inland intrusion of the western North Pacific subtropical high (WNPSH). Both case study and statistical analysis indicate that westward extension of the WNPSH is significantly positively correlated with convection over the Maritime Continent (MC) and northern Indian Peninsula (NIP) under the influence of sea surface temperature anomalies (SSTAs). Atmospheric general circulation model (AGCM) experiments validate the individual and combined effects of SSTAs in the tropical Indo-Pacific–Atlantic Oceans on WNPSH and CNC rainfall. In particular, the warm SSTAs in the Indo-Pacific warm pool increase the probability of extremely westward extension of the WNPSH and above-normal rainfall over the CNC. The cold SSTAs in the equatorial central-eastern Pacific enlarge the zonal SSTA gradient, strengthen the anomalous convection over the MC and NIP, and intensify the WNPSH and CNC rainfall anomalies. Meanwhile, the warmer tropical Atlantic anchors the anomalous WNPSH and CNC rainfall in their observed positions. A statistical model based on the tropical SSTAs in August can skillfully predict the westward extension of the WNPSH in September 2021, suggesting that the combined effects of tropical Indo-Pacific–Atlantic SSTAs in late summer possibly tend to prolong rainy season of the EASM until early autumn. In sharp contrast to rapid global warming, the surface air temperature (SAT) in Northeast Asia (NEA) has exhibited strong cooling in June since 2010. Our results show that this cooling is a possible response to declining Bering Sea sea ice concentrations (BSICs) in March. A physical process analysis shows that decreasing BSICs provoke a south‐eastward‐propagating Rossby wave train and induce a strong anomalous anticyclone over the midlatitude Northwest Atlantic, resulting in tripolar anomalous sea surface temperature (SST) pattern with warm anomalies in the midlatitude Northwest Atlantic. These persistent tripolar SST anomalies generate a new Rossby wave across Eurasia in June, which enhances the cyclonic atmosphere circulation anomaly over NEA and leads to the cold SAT anomalies observed in this area. Correspondingly, in response to the sharp decline in BSIC in March, the NEA has exhibited an unprecedented cooling trend in June over the most recent decade. Declining BSICs in March excite a Rossby wave train that propagates eastward, causing a strong anomalous anticyclone (cyclone) over the midlatitude North Atlantic (subpolar Atlantic) and a tripolar anomalous sea surface temperature (SST) pattern by modifying the surface heat flux. The tripolar SST pattern in the North Atlantic develops in April and May due to the downstream development of the wave train; it persists in June mainly due to the ocean memory effect and subsequently generates a new Rossby wave across Eurasia via eddy‐mediated processes, provoking a cyclonic atmospheric circulation anomaly over NEA and leading to the observed cold SAT anomalies. Accompanying the significant BSIC decline in March since 2010, the atmospheric regime and SST variations over the North Atlantic in association with the cold SAT anomalies observed in NEA in June have strengthened and thus induced strong cooling over NEA. Temperature whiplash events, which are characterized by a rapid transition between persistent and extreme warm and cold conditions, usually damage natural systems and human communities and can even have catastrophic impacts. To more deeply understand the severe winter temperature whiplash events in North China, in this study, the atmospheric circulation regime that is primarily responsible for such events is investigated based on Japanese 55‐year reanalysis data. The results show that the drastic temperature shifts during winter temperature whiplash events are closely correlated with the southeastward propagation of the dipolar anomalous temperature in the middle and lower troposphere over the Eurasian continent. The dipolar structure of the temperature signals features an initial cold anomaly over the West Siberian Plain and a warm anomaly over East Asia during negative (extremely warm to extremely cold) events and the opposite pattern during positive (extremely cold to extremely warm) events. This dipolar temperature anomaly is tightly coupled with the southeastward development of an upper‐level wave‐like anomalous circulation pattern over the Eurasian continent, which is associated with a Rossby wave originating near the Kara Sea during negative events and in northern Europe during positive events. Based on the calculation of the temperature budget, the drastic temperature drop during negative events is mainly dominated by anomalous meridional temperature advection, and adiabatic heating due to vertical motion is negligible. In contrast, adiabatic heating due to sinking plays a dominant role in the drastic temperature increase during positive events, while anomalous meridional temperature advection also makes a substantial contribution to the temperature increase. The amplitude of El Niño, measured by the Nino3.4 sea surface temperature anomaly (SSTA) index, has exhibited an interdecadal change with a weakening trend since the late 1990s, characterized by the distinct Bjerknes stability index between 1980–1998 and 1999–2014. Statistical results suggest that this was primarily induced by the attenuation of the zonal wind stress and low‐level wind anomalies in response to the zonal equatorial SSTA gradient. The weakened atmospheric responses to the zonal equatorial SSTA gradient were associated with the obvious westward extension of the negative sea level pressure anomalies (SLPA) over the tropics. This was mainly attributed to the transition of the dominant atmospheric circulation over the North Pacific, where the Aleutian Low (AL) mode was replaced by the North Pacific Oscillation (NPO) mode after the late 1990s. Numerical experiments from the long‐term historical simulations of the GFDL‐CM3 model indicate that both of the AL and NPO were dominant over the North Pacific and alternated on the interdecadal time‐scale. When the NPO mode was dominant, it became more effective at playing a role in triggering an El Niño in the central Pacific via the seasonal footprinting mechanism over the subtropical northeastern Pacific. Such a change might cause the westward shift of the tropical SLPA and the attenuated atmospheric responses to the zonal SSTA gradient, ultimately resulting in the weakening of the El Niño amplitude. This study investigates the impacts of the autumn sea surface temperature anomalies (SSTAs) on the following winter (December-January-February, DJF) 2-m air temperature anomalies (TSAs) in China and discusses the potential predictability of the DJF TSAs based on the intimate link between the DJF TSAs and autumn global SSTAs. The empirical orthogonal function (EOF) analysis suggests that the three leading EOF modes jointly account for 80% of the total TSA variances and are characterized by homogeneous spatial, north-south seesaw, and cross-structure patterns. These EOFs are temporally stable and suggest the potential predictability of the DJF TSAs. The EOF1 mode is influenced by changes in the intensities of the Siberian high, East Asian winter monsoon (EAWM), and East Asian trough related to a Eurasian teleconnection pattern, which can be tracked back to the autumn (September-October-November, SON) SSTAs. The Arctic oscillation (AO) exerts a strong influence on the EOF2 mode. The configuration of the global SON SSTAs induces the AO signal and causes a TSA oscillation between the northern and southern parts of China. The EOF3 mode is associated with the western pathway of the EAWM and the westward shift of the Siberian high, which are attributed to two SON SSTA patterns. The multiple correlation coefficients between the SSTA indices and winter atmospheric circulations suggest the cooperative contribution of the autumn global SSTAs to the DJF TSAs. Therefore, a physically motivated statistical model is established based on the autumn SSTA indices. It is argued that anthropogenic global warming may decrease the global occurrence of cold waves. However, a historical record-extreme cold wave, popularly called the "boss level" cold wave, attacked East Asia in January 2016, which gives rise to the discussion of why this boss-level cold wave occurred during the winter with the warmest recorded global mean surface air temperature (SAT). To explore the impacts of human-induced global warming and natural internal atmosphere variability, we investigated the cold-wave-related circulation regime (i.e., the large-scale atmospheric circulation pattern) and compared the observation with the large ensemble simulations of the MIROC5 model. Our results showed that this East Asian extreme cold-wave-related atmospheric circulation regime mainly exhibited an extremely strong anomaly of the Ural blocking high (UBH) and a record-breaking anomaly of the surface Siberian high (SH), and it largely originated from the natural internal atmosphere variability. However, because of the dynamic effect of Arctic amplification, anthropogenic global warming may increase the likelihood of extreme cold waves through shifting the responsible natural atmospheric circulation regime toward a stronger amplitude. The probability of occurrence of extreme anomalies of UBH, SH, and the East Asia area mean SAT have been increased by 58%, 57%, and 32%, respectively, as a consequence of anthropogenic global warming. Therefore, extreme cold waves in East Asia, such as the one in January 2016, may be an enhanced response to the larger internal atmospheric variability modulated by human-induced global warming. It has been argued that fewer cold extremes will be expected to occur over most midlatitude areas, because of anthropogenic-induced global warming. However, East Asia repeatedly suffered from unexpected cold spells during the winter of 2015/16, and the low surface air temperature (SAT) during 21–25 January 2016 broke the previous calendar record from 1961. We hypothesize that cold extremes such as these occur because of Arctic amplification (AA) of global warming. To test this hypothesis, we analyzed the changes of SAT variability in the winter season over East Asia. Our results show that the SAT variability (measured by the standard deviation of the winter season daily mean SAT) over East Asia has significantly increased in the era of AA during 1988/89–2015/16 and exhibits a polarization between warm and cold extremes, popularly dubbed as “weather whiplash.” This phenomenon is driven by both the thermodynamic effects of global warming and the dynamic effects of AA. Global warming favors a rising SAT and more frequent warm extremes. The AA phenomenon strengthens the wavy components of midlatitude circulation, leading to more frequent blockings over the Ural region and a stronger Siberian high in north Asia. This dynamic effect of AA enhances the intrusion of cold air from Siberia into East Asia and causes cold extremes. Because there is a comparable increase of frequency of both warm and cold extremes, the SAT variability significantly increases in unison with AA, but little change is observed in the seasonal mean SAT of East Asia. The boreal summer monsoon (BSM), which includes the monsoons over India (IND), the western North Pacific (WNP), East Asia (EA), North America (NAM), and North Africa (NAF), shows prominent interannual variation (IAV) in summer precipitation and affects the areas with the largest populations in the world. In the present, the EOF analysis is used to extract the BSM dominant covariation mode during 1979-2014. This mode is featured by the out-of-phase rainfall IAV over the WNP compared with the other BSM members. The BSM covariation mode is closely associated with the upper- and lower-level coupled circulations, which are characterized by two anomalous zonal circulations over the tropical oceans coupled near the date line and an abnormal meridional cell over the WNP and EA regions, respectively. Furthermore, the strength of this mode depends on the phase relationship of rainfall IAV between the WNP and NAM monsoon regions, which is modulated by the seasonal evolution of ENSO events and the resultant SST anomalies (SSTAs) in the tropical Indian Ocean (TIO). The weaker mode is accompanied by the in-phase rainfall IAV between these two regions, along with the persisting ENSO events and stronger SSTAs in the TIO from winter to summer. In the years with fast-decaying ENSO events and the related weaker TIO SSTA, the out-of-phase rainfall IAV between the WNP and NAMregion takes place to enhance this mode.A series of AGCM sensitivity experiments could reproduce the anomalies of atmospheric circulation related to the distinct seasonal evolution of ENSO events. The present study used harmonic and multivariate empirical orthogonal function (MV-EOF) analyses to identify the existence of climatological intraseasonal oscillation (CISO) in the diabatic heating, precipitation, and circulation of the East Asian summer monsoon (EASM). The strongest CISO signals are found in the north of the western North Pacific, possibly because of the horizontal gradient of diabatic heating induced by the seasonal land-sea thermal contrast. Further, the phase relationship between the diabatic heating components maintains the EASM CISO. The first two coupling modes of EASM CISO in the circulation are robust during May through August, with a period of 40-80 days, and exhibit phase locking to the stepwise establishment of the EASM, which reveals the coaction of the Mongolian cyclone (MC) around Lake Baikal at 850 hPa, the western North Pacific subtropical high (WNPSH) at 500 hPa, and the South Asian high (SAH) over the Tibetan Plateau (TP) at 200 hPa. The first mode shows that the jointly enhanced MC, WNPSH, and SAH correspond to a tripole rainfall anomaly with strong mei-yu and baiu fronts over East Asia. The second mode, however, indicates the eastward and northwestward propagation of MC and WNPSH, respectively, with suppressed SAH, as well as a dipole rainfall anomaly over East Asia. Both the observations and numerical simulation verify the importance of daily diabatic heating and SST in maintaining the CISO modes over the WNP, where the condensation heating related to atmospheric forcing determines the local intraseasonal air-sea interaction. The contrast between the eastern and central Pacific (EP- and CP-) El Niño is observed in the different responses of zonal and vertical circulation in the tropics. To measure the different responses of the atmospheric circulation to the two types of El Niño, an eastern and a central Pacific southern oscillation index (EP- and CP-SOI) are defined based on the air-sea coupled relationship between eddy sea level pressure and sea surface temperature. Analyses suggest that while the EP-SOI exhibits variability on an interannual (2-7-yr) time scale, decadal (10-15-yr) variations in the CP-SOI are more dominant; both are strongly coupled with their respective EP- and CP-El Niño patterns. Composite analysis suggests that, during EP-ENSO, the Walker circulation exhibits a dipole structure in the lower-level (850 hPa) and upper-level (200 hPa) velocity potential anomalies and exhibits a signal cell over the Pacific. In the case of CP-ENSO, however, the Walker circulation shows a tripole structure and exhibits double cells over the Pacific. In addition, the two types of ENSO events show opposite impacts on global land precipitation in the boreal winter and spring seasons. For example, seasonal precipitation across mainland China exhibits an opposite relationship with the EP- and CP-ENSO during winter and spring, but the rainfall over the lower reaches of the Yangtze River and South China shows an opposite relationship during the rest of the seasons. Therefore, the different relationships between rainfall and EP- and CP-ENSO should be carefully considered when predicting seasonal rainfall in the East Asian monsoon regions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
