The purpose of this study was to compare efficacy of kinesio taping (K-taping) and joint mobilization as immediate interventions for treating athletes with glenohumeral internal rotation deficit (GIRD). Thirty-two asymptomatic players were recruited from basketball, volleyball and handball who had a loss of shoulder internal rotation range of motion (IR ROM) of 10 degrees or more on their dominant compared to non-dominant side. They were randomly assigned to 1 of 2 groups: K-taping (n = 16) or joint mobilization (n = 16). Participants in taping group were treated with K-tape for inhibition of external rotators of shoulder and participants in joint mobilization group were treated with grade four Maitland's mobilization technique for increasing glenohumeral internal rotation. Shoulder internal and external ROM were measured before and after the intervention with a universal goniometer. Both the methods produced significant improvement in IR ROM. The unpaired t-test showed significant change in IR ROM within both the groups (p = 0.003). No significant change was found on comparing both the groups (p = 0.373). There were no significant differences between results of the three sports (p = 0.592). K-taping and joint mobilization both are equally effective in improving the IR ROM in over-head players with GIRD. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The aim of the study was to analyze the effectiveness of proprioceptive exercises on joint position sense, balance and COP (centre of pressure) in athletes with functional ankle instability. Material and Method. 80 injured athletes (20 females, 60 males, age =18-25years) with a history of functional ankle instability volunteered to participate in this study. Athletes were randomly assigned to the experimental or control group. The experimental group participated in a 6-week proprioceptive-training protocol consisting of various proprioceptive exercises using rubber tube 3 times a week. The control group did not participate in the strength-training protocol. Wobble board balance test was performed to measure the balance and stability of athletes. Proprioception (Joint Position Sense) was measured using gravity inclinometer and center of pressure was analyzed by using force platform. Conclusion: The study concluded that six weeks of proprioceptive training had a significant effect on proprioception and balance measures in subjects with self reported unilateral functional instability. The purpose of this study was to establish the relationship between the aerobic, anaerobic dry land performances to the swimming performance in professional swimmers. 60 healthy National level swimmers aged 16 to 35 (mean=20.3±3.10) years were recruited for the study. Swimming performance was measured for the endurance and speed (i.e. 50×6 m & 25 ×2 m) after a standard warm up and, the aerobic capacity was measured using VO2 Max Treadmill Machine. 6 Repetitive Maximum (6 RM) was used as the baseline method for the measurement of strength. Upper limb and lower limb strength was evaluated by bench press (BP) and leg extension (LE) using the free weight barbell respectively. Results indicated that there was a strong association between the performance of professional swimmers and that of aerobic dry land performance, where the VO2 max was found to be positively correlated to the swimming performance(r300 =.343 and r50 =.426). However the results also indicated that anaerobic dry land performance does not contribute significantly to swimming performance (r300(LE)=0.149, r50(BP)=0.018 and r300(BP)=0.081, r50(LE)=0.105). Therefore we conclude that with a higher aerobic dry land performance will arguably, display superior swimming performance. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Athletes have been found to endure more pain than nonathletes. This may be due to more frequent use of adaptive pain responses by athletes. In this study, we aimed to identify the pain responses, which are most frequently employed by athletes and compare them with a non-athletic control group. Ninety male athletes from different sports categories (contact, limited-contact and non-contact) and thirty healthy male non-athletes were selected for this study. Results showed that athletes used adaptive pain responses (social support, activity) more frequently (0.001, 0.004 respectively) and maladaptive pain responses (avoidance), less frequently (0.001) than non-athletes. Further studies are required to investigate optimal timing and methods for these techniques to better understand the influence of these pain responses on pain control. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The purpose of this study is to compare and investigate the relationship between the training logs, Mental and Physical State Scales (MAPSS), Athletic Burnout Questionnaire (ABQ), CSAI-2 and the eye hand coordination as assessed by the Double Labyrinthine Test on Vienna Test System (VTS). Total of 100 athletes (65 males, 35 females) were grouped in three risk groups (high risk group, moderate risk group and low risk group) according to MAPSS scores. One way ANOVA analysis indicated a significant intergroup difference among the three groups for all the parameters at a significance level of p < 0.001. Pearson product moment analysed correlations between various parameters. The study concludes that as the training distress and training load among athletes' increases, the burnout risk and anxiety level increases, however the self confidence level reduces which proves to be detrimental to the psychomotor performance as measured by eye hand coordination test. BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Reaction time is one of the important methods used to study a person's central information processing speed and fast coordinated peripheral movement response. The purpose of this study was to compare the reaction time performances in controls, athletes, and patients of type 1 diabetes mellitus and to find out any gender differences. METHODOLOGY: 120 subjects aged 20-30 years were distributed into three groups. Group I - Healthy controls, Group II - Athletes, Group III - Patients of type 1 diabetes mellitus. Equal number of males and females were taken. The reaction time was recorded for auditory and visual stimuli in seconds, by reaction time device. RESULTS: Assessed by using unpaired 't' test. The athletes performed better than the controls and in the patients of Type 1 diabetes mellitus; there was a significant prolongation of the visual as well as auditory reaction times. However, gender differences were not observed. CONCLUSION: It can be concluded that the reaction time is a good indicator of performance in sports, which suggests that diabetics participating in quick action sports should be careful about the injuries that may occur as a result of increased reaction time. Foot impact force during running has been suggested as one of the important causes of haemolysis in runners. However, intravascular haemolysis has also been reported among athletes involved in sports in which foot impact does not occur. The purpose of our study was to analyse intravascular haemolysis in athletes during running and compare it with cycling. Twenty male long- and middle-distance runners volunteered to participate in this study. They were divided into two groups (group 1: running and group 2: cycling), with 10 participants in each group. Each athlete completed 1 h of running or cycling at their calculated target heart rate (60–70%). Venous blood samples were collected before and immediately after the running and cycling protocols. Unconjugated bilirubin (UBR; P < 0.01) and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH; P <0.05) levels were increased significantly after running, indicating the occurrence of haemolysis in this group of athletes. A significant variation was observed in the mean values of haematological variables between post-run (UBR: 1.40 ± 0.29, LDH: 225 ± 69.13, haemoglobin (Hb): 11 ± 1.09) and pre-run (UBR: 0.88 ± 0.31, LDH: 183 ± 40.42, Hb: 12.10 ± 1.19) during the running protocol. No significant differences in haematological variables were found between athletes who did cycling and non-exercising group participants. Our results indicate that intravascular haemolysis occurred significantly during running when compared with cycling. Hence, we conclude that the mechanical trauma due to footstrike is the major cause of intravascular haemolysis during running. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
