This essay reflects on the history of the origins of atheism in the late sixteenth century through an analysis of the Inquisition proceedings against Flaminio Fabrizi, which began in Siena in 1587 and ended in Rome in 1591 with the accused being sentenced to death at the stake. This is a very intriguing case because Fabrizi, not a learned man, mixed different forms of heterodoxy and unbelief that surprised and disturbed the judges of the Holy Office. This essay aims to contribute to the history of religious nonconformism in Counter-reformation Italy and in Europe during the so-called "confessional era". [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In the present article we shall focus on the early radicalization in Italy of Luther’s and the Reformed world’s stereotypical image, quite distant from an actual knowledge of the doctrine. Luther was associated with Niccolò Machiavelli and machiavellism. The Florentine secretary was referred to, and sometimes only hinted at, for the historiographical notion which attributed Italy’s backwardness in the processs of modernization to the decadence of its religion and coincidentally of its mores and morals. At first Machiavelli and Luther, sons of Satan both of them, were indicated as the main actors of the corruption of customs and, during the 18th century, the analysis was developed with examples supplied by the economic, social and political comparison with the countries where Reformation was adopted. In the context of the Roman Church, the «Lutheran monster» will occasionally be pointed at as the source and origin of all kinds of disasters, of decadence of customs and doctrine. In different moments and situations therefore, the figure of Luther — and Calvin — became the causes of the doctrinal corruption effected by the Society of Jesus, the origin of Jansenism, of any policy opposing the papal power and hostile to religious institutions, and at last as the germ from which the worst modern doctrines were born: from atheims to libertinism and the Enlightenment.

This paper argues that Marquis de Sade is a more original and relevant Enlightenment philosopher than it is commonly thought. We argue that de Sade is a notable author and a noteworthy naturalist thinker in contemporary times as well, concerning modern science, organized religion, (homo)sexuality, political violence and prevalent sociocultural norms. In order to demonstrate these claims, we thoroughly analyse de Sadeʼs philosophies of naturalism and materialism, i.e., his metaphysics and his radical ethics of “immorality”, based on viewing (human) Nature as a sole organizing, creative and destructive principle. Furthermore, we detail his atheist and anti-theistic arguments, which he consistently uses to reject the possibility of a God and all supernatural beings, coupled with his social and political criticism of a faith-based society. Thus, we outline the philosophical arguments that made him a controversial, infamous and denounced thinker, and which socially distanced him from the prevailing philosophical milieu. We also argue for the possibility that he deserves a more prominent place in the history of philosophy which is not congruent with the various “rehabilitative” and “revisionist” narratives regarding de Sade as an early champion of the Counter-Enlightenment, anti-science and postmodernism., U ovom se članku argumentira da je Marquis de Sade izvorniji i važniji filozof Prosvjetiteljstva no što se inače smatra.

ATHEISM , *ANTHROPOLOGY , *ENLIGHTENMENT , *CHINESE rites , *LIBERTINISM - Abstract
In the first decades of the eighteenth century, the Society of Jesus was busy changing its interpretation of the Chinese world and denying the possible existence of a society of atheists. To safeguard the Chinese mission, the Jesuit Antonio Provana claimed that European cultural models could not be used in order to interpret China, and that the voices and purported beliefs of the Chinese should be reported on their own terms. The same refusal to interpret Chinese culture through the interpretative schemes that European cultures had inherited (largely from the ancient Greeks or Romans) also filled the pages of the Jesuit journal Mémoires de Trévoux between 1701 and 1719, the period analyzed in this contribution. My article in this special issue argues that, due to the extreme rhetorical caution necessary to the Jesuits in France during the third phase (1700) of the Chinese rites controversy, the Mémoires de Trévoux pursued a cultural policy intended to deny the existence of any atheism whether in a single individual or in a whole nation. This departure from a Eurocentric perspective, as well as the denial of atheism in any form, became themes that forcefully reappeared during the Enlightenment. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Le dossier thématique de La Lettre clandestine se propose d’explorer la diversité des formes que peut prendre cette problématique entre les XVIe et XVIIIe siècles., Studies of clandestine philosophical manuscripts have significantly contributed to renewing research into religious disbelief; they have also led to rethinking the question of how atheism is defined. The thematic dossier La Lettre clandestine explores the diverse approaches to this issue between the sixteenth and eighteenth centuries.

- Abstract
Among the main topics discussed by Sarpi scholarship, the question of the Servite's religious attitude is undoubtedly the most popular. No other topic attracted more interest and produced such deep disagreement, especially since the rediscovering of his manuscript Pensieri (whose first trustable edition dates only to 1996). In this essay, I will analyse the most important interpretations of Sarpi's attitude towards religion and theology that have emerged so far. This analysis will open the way for a more direct examination of some of Sarpi's texts that have been used to support the different readings of his thoughts. Finally, I will propose some considerations regarding the possibility to include Sarpi in the history of early modern atheism. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Composed of excerpts from ancient and Renaissance sources, it offers the first known example of a manifestly atheistic philosophy, and its authorship has always been a mystery. A massive body of bibliographical and textual comparisons seems to point to Guy Patin, one of the most famous scholarly libertines of the time, as being the author (or compiler) of the treatise.

- Abstract
THE MORTALITY OF THE SOUL About the same time others arose in Arabia, putting forward a doctrine foreign to the truth. They said that during the present time the human soul dies and perishes with the body, but that at the time of resurrection they will be renewed together. In 1646, Edmund Calamy the Elder discerned two radical views among the sectarians of his time. ‘Some believe’, he wrote, ‘that the Soul dyeth with the Body, and that both shall rise again at the Last Day. Others begin to say, they believe that the Soul is mortal, as well as the Body, and that there is no resurrection neither of Soul nor Body.’ Such views were certainly radical, but they were not new. On the contrary, mortalist views — particularly of the sort which affirmed that the soul slept or died — were widespread in the Reformation period. George Williams has shown how prevalent mortalism was among the Reformation radicals. The early writings of Luther strongly supported it. He was firmly committed to a dualism between body and soul and therefore to the continued existence of the soul between death and the resurrection of the body. Nevertheless, for Luther, all the emphasis was on the final day of judgement when bodies would rise from the dead, as did Christ's on Easter morning, and be reunited with their souls. International audience; It may reasonably be claimed that, in the early modern period, the Bible constituted a reference equally important and inescapable for irreligious authors as for pious ones.1 By ‘irreligious authors’, I refer to all those who criticised, in part or globally, the established religions, in a way that exceeded confessional controversies. These critics and despisers of religion – in particular Christianity, omnipresent as it was – constantly used the Bible not only to shield themselves from accusations of impiety – all attacks on religion and the Scripture being highly suspect – but also against the Bible itself; that is, that which the Church considered as the essential vehicle of its message and teachings.

We are questioning the notion of libertinism, not by denying its unity and its philosophical content but on the contrary, by underlining the fundamental role of atheism. It doesn’t go without difficulty: first, the term “atheist” is being rejected by the so-called libertine authors themselves; second, specialists typically give libertines a double characterization: on the one hand, on the theoretical level, as anti-dogmatism, and on the other hand, on the political level, as conservatism through the thesis of religion as a necessary imposture. We propose, on the contrary, to characterize the libertines by their fundamental atheism, conscious or not, and their humanism, which is not to be restricted to the moral sphere but translates, in the politic sphere, into the idea of tolerance and “freedom of conscience”. Consequently, neither the idea of “natural right” is restricted to Christian thought nor is free thought a mere secularisation of religious thought. Nonetheless, the link between atheism and Enlightenment in the next century is debatable, as much on the political as on the scientific level. Does this mean that the concept of Enlightenment applied to the libertines is anachronistic?

This paper dedicated to Jacques Vallée Des Barreaux is a case study in order to emphasize the heuristic virtue of the notion of acceptability in social sciences and humanities. We take into account two levels of analysis : the first is a clandestine poetic production, where an original and radical philosophical posture is adopted, but which is also composed by more innocuous verses; the second is the public character of Des Barreaux, famous for his scandalous and outrageous behavior. We suggest the formula of restricted acceptability in order to deal with these two levels and their relationships. Texts whose publication in the author's name would be unacceptable are accepted and meet an audience in a relative clandestinity. Des Barreaux’s character, whose behavior is considered scandalous, is fully integrated into the social life of the court and the high society in Paris and escapes public condemnation ; he is deemed acceptable in his familiar social places. Using the notion of limited acceptability allows us to highlight that the limits of what is acceptable in the same years of the hardening of the Catholic order in France was much looser and resilient than one might imagine.

LIBERTINISM in literature - Abstract
This paper argues for a 'libertine Marvell' as heir to a line of intellectual and poetic influence stretching from the atheist philosopher Lucilio Vanini, through the poets Théophile de Viau and Marc-Antoine Gérard de Saint-Amant, via their English translators Charles Cotton, Thomas Stanley, and Thomas Fairfax, to Marvell's poem Upon Appleton House. It argues that Upon Appleton House captures the libertine spirit of Théophile more faithfully than Stanley and Cotton's largely sanitised versions. Conversely, French libertine poetry and thought of the 1610s and 1620s are seen to provide the best context for understanding the 'vitalism' of Marvell's garden poems, as well as their unusually divagating observational style.
