The Bulge Asymmetries and Dynamic Evolution (BAaDE) project attempts to improve our knowledge about the structure and dynamics of the inner Milky Way galaxy by sampling tens of thousands of infrared color-selected evolved stars with circumstellar envelopes (CSEs). The SiO masers in these CSEs yield the object's line-of-sight velocity instantly and accurately, and together provide a sample of point-mass particles that are complementary to high-mass star formation masers typically found in the Galactic Disk as well as to optical samples that cannot reach into the Galactic Plane and Bulge due to extremely high visual extinction. We present a method to estimate distances to AGB stars, utilizing the rich infrared data sets available for these infrared-bright targets. The method is based on the assumption that stars with intrinsically similar properties (metallicity, initial mass, etc.) produce similar spectral energy distributions (SEDs) and similar luminosities. We here discuss the results for AGB stars belonging to the BAaDE survey sample whose distances were calibrated using the template SEDs of stars with their VLBI parallaxes. As VLBI parallaxes are only known for a handful of sources, the resulting templates only cover a small subset of the BAaDE sample. Additional methods to derive suitable templates will therefore also be required. The work on expanding the template set is promising, although more fine tuning is still needed. Radio campaigns using maser stellar beacons have provided crucial information to characterize Galactic stellar populations. Currently, the Bulge Asymmetries and Dynamical Evolution (BAaDE) project is surveying infrared (IR) color-selected targets for SiO masers. This provides a sample of evolved stars that can be used to study the inner, optically obscured Galaxy using line-of-sight velocities and possibly very long baseline interferometry proper motions. In order to use the BAaDE sample for kinematic studies, the stellar population should be characterized. In this study, the BAaDE targets have been cross-matched with IR (2MASS) and optical (Gaia) samples. By exploring the synergies of this cross-match together with Gaia parallaxes and extinction maps, the local (d < 2 kpc) asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars can be characterized. We have defined a BAaDE–Gaia sample of 20,111 sources resulting from cross-matching BAaDE targets with IR and optical surveys. From this sample, a local sample of 1812 evolved stars with accurate parallax measurements, confirmed evolved stellar evolution stage, and within 2 kpc distance around the Sun was selected, for which absolute (bolometric) magnitudes are estimated. The evolved stellar population with Gaia counterparts that are variable seems to be predominantly associated with AGB stars with moderate luminosity () and periods between 250 and 1250 days.
