We present a rich, multiwavelength, multiscale database built around the PHANGS-ALMA CO$\,$(2-1) survey and ancillary data. We use this database to present the distributions of molecular cloud populations and sub-galactic environments in 80 PHANGS galaxies, to characterize the relationship between population-averaged cloud properties and host galaxy properties, and to assess key timescales relevant to molecular cloud evolution and star formation. We show that PHANGS probes a wide range of kpc-scale gas, stellar, and star formation rate (SFR) surface densities, as well as orbital velocities and shear. The population-averaged cloud properties in each aperture correlate strongly with both local environmental properties and host galaxy global properties. Leveraging a variable selection analysis, we find that the kpc-scale surface densities of molecular gas and SFR tend to possess the most predictive power for the population-averaged cloud properties. Once their variations are controlled for, galaxy global properties contain little additional information, which implies that the apparent galaxy-to-galaxy variations in cloud populations are likely mediated by kpc-scale environmental conditions. We further estimate a suite of important timescales from our multiwavelength measurements. The cloud-scale free-fall time and turbulence crossing time are ${\sim}5{-}20$ Myr, comparable to previous cloud lifetime estimates. The timescales for orbital motion, shearing, and cloud-cloud collisions are longer, ${\sim}100$ Myr. The molecular gas depletion time is $1{-}3$ Gyr and shows weak to no correlations with the other timescales in our data. We use spectral stacking to measure the contribution of galaxies of different masses and in different hierarchies to the cosmic atomic hydrogen (HI) mass density in the local Universe. Our sample includes 1793 galaxies at $z < 0.11$ observed with the Westerbork Synthesis Radio Telescope, for which Sloan Digital Sky Survey spectroscopy and hierarchy information are also available. We find a cosmic HI mass density of $\Omega_{\rm HI} = (3.99 \pm 0.54)\times 10^{-4} h_{70}^{-1}$ at $\langle z\rangle = 0.065$. For the central and satellite galaxies, we obtain $\Omega_{\rm HI}$ of $(3.51 \pm 0.49)\times 10^{-4} h_{70}^{-1}$ and $(0.90 \pm 0.16)\times 10^{-4} h_{70}^{-1}$, respectively. We show that galaxies above and below stellar masses of $\sim$10$^{9.3}$ M$_{\odot}$ contribute in roughly equal measure to the global value of $\Omega_{\rm HI}$. While consistent with estimates based on targeted HI surveys, our results are in tension with previous theoretical work. We show that these differences are, at least partly, due to the empirical recipe used to set the partition between atomic and molecular hydrogen in semi-analytical models. Moreover, comparing our measurements with the cosmological semi-analytic models of galaxy formation {\sc Shark} and GALFORM reveals gradual stripping of gas via ram pressure works better to fully reproduce the properties of satellite galaxies in our sample, than strangulation. Galaxies have different morphology, gas content and star formation rate (SFR) in dense environments like galaxy clusters. The impact of environmental density extends to several virial radii, and galaxies are pre-processed in filaments and groups, before falling into the cluster. Our goal is to quantify this pre-processing, in terms of gas content and SFR, as a function of density in cosmic filaments. We have observed the two first CO transitions in 163 galaxies with the IRAM-30m telescope, and added 82 more measurements from the literature, for a sample of 245 galaxies in the filaments around Virgo. We gathered HI-21cm measurements from the literature, and observed 69 galaxies with the Nan\c{c}ay telescope, to complete our sample. We compare our filament galaxies with comparable samples from the Virgo cluster and with the isolated galaxies of the AMIGA sample. We find a progression from field galaxies to filament and cluster ones for decreasing SFR, increasing fraction of galaxies in the quenching phase, increasing proportion of early-type galaxies and decreasing gas content. Galaxies in the quenching phase, defined as having SFR below 1/3 of the main sequence rate, are only between 0-20\% in the isolated sample, while they are 20-60\% in the filaments and 30-80\% in the Virgo cluster. Processes that lead to star formation quenching are already at play in filaments. They depend mostly on the local galaxy density, while the distance to the filament spine is a secondary parameter. While the HI to stellar mass ratio decreases with local density by ~1 dex in the filaments, and ~2 dex in Virgo with respect to the field, the decrease is much less for the H$_2$ to stellar mass ratio. As the environmental density increases, the gas depletion time decreases, since the gas content decreases faster than the SFR. We present the CO isotopologue Line Atlas within the Whirpool galaxy Survey (CLAWS) based on an IRAM 30-m large programme which provides a benchmark study of numerous, faint CO isotopologues in the mm-wavelength regime across the full disc of M51 (NGC 5194). The survey's core goal is to use the low-J CO isotopologue lines to constrain CO excitation and chemistry, and therefrom the local physical conditions of the gas. In this survey paper, we describe the CLAWS observing and data reduction strategies. We map the J=1-0 and 2-1 transitions of the CO isotopologues $^{12}$CO,$^{13}$CO, C$^{18}$O and C$^{17}$O, as well as several supplementary lines within the 1 mm and 3 mm window (CN(1-0), CS(2-1), CH$_3$OH(2-1), N$_2$H$^+$(1-0), HC$_3$N(10-9)) at ~1 kpc resolution. A total observation time of 149 h offers unprecedented sensitivity. We use these data to explore several CO isotopologue line ratios in detail, study their radial (and azimuthal) trends and investigate whether changes in line ratios stem from changes in ISM properties such as gas temperatures, densities or chemical abundances. For example, we find negative radial trends for the $^{13}$CO}/$^{12}$CO, C$^{18}$O/$^{12}$CO and C$^{18}$O/$^{13}$CO line ratios in their J=1-0 transitions. We also find variations with local environment, such as higher $^{12}$CO(2-1)/(1-0) or $^{13}$CO/$^{12}$CO(1-0) line ratios in interarm regions compared to spiral arm regions. We propose that these aforementioned variations of CO line ratios are most likely due to a variation of the optical depth, while abundance variations due to selective nucleosynthesis on a galaxy-wide scale could also play a role. We also study the CO spectral line energy distribution (SLED) using archival JCMT $^{12}$CO(3-2) data and find a variation of the SLED shape with local environmental parameters further underlying changes in optical depth, gas temperatures or densities., 29 pages, 22 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

The feedback from young stars (i.e. pre-supernova) is thought to play a crucial role in molecular cloud destruction. In this paper, we assess the feedback mechanisms acting within a sample of 5810 HII regions identified from the PHANGS-MUSE survey of 19 nearby ($ 1$, and expanding, yet there is a small sample of compact HII regions with $P_\mathrm{tot,max}/P_\mathrm{de} < 1$ ($\sim$1% of the sample). These mostly reside in galaxy centres ($R_\mathrm{gal}, Comment: 28 pages total, 16+3 figures, and 3 tables. Accepted for publication in MNRAS

Context. Investigating the dust heating mechanisms in galaxies provides a deeper understanding of how the internal energy balance drives their evolution. Over the last decade radiative transfer simulations based on the Monte Carlo method have emphasised the role of the various stellar populations heating the diffuse dust. Beyond the expected heating through ongoing star formation, older stellar populations (≥8 Gyr) and even active galactic nuclei can both contribute energy to the infrared emission of diffuse dust. Aims. In this particular study we examine how the radiation of an external heating source, such as the less massive galaxy NGC 5195 in the M 51 interacting system, could affect the heating of the diffuse dust of its parent galaxy NGC 5194, and vice versa. Our goal is to quantify the exchange of energy between the two galaxies by mapping the 3D distribution of their radiation field. Methods. We used SKIRT, a state-of-the-art 3D Monte Carlo radiative transfer code, to construct the 3D model of the radiation field of M 51, following the methodology defined in the DustPedia framework. In the interest of modelling, the assumed centre-to-centre distance separation between the two galaxies is ∼10 kpc. Results. Our model is able to reproduce the global spectral energy distribution of the system, and it matches the resolved optical and infrared images fairly well. In total, 40.7% of the intrinsic stellar radiation of the combined system is absorbed by dust. Furthermore, we quantify the contribution of the various dust heating sources in the system, and find that the young stellar population of NGC 5194 is the predominant dust-heating agent, with a global heating fraction of 71.2%. Another 23% is provided by the older stellar population of the same galaxy, while the remaining 5.8% has its origin in NGC 5195. Locally, we find that the regions of NGC 5194 closer to NGC 5195 are significantly affected by the radiation field of the latter, with the absorbed energy fraction rising up to 38%. The contribution of NGC 5195 remains under the percentage level in the outskirts of the disc of NGC 5194. This is the first time that the heating of the diffuse dust by a companion galaxy is quantified in a nearby interacting system.

We measure the velocity dispersion, $\sigma$, and surface density, $\Sigma$, of the molecular gas in nearby galaxies from CO spectral line cubes with spatial resolution $45$-$120$ pc, matched to the size of individual giant molecular clouds. Combining $11$ galaxies from the PHANGS-ALMA survey with $4$ targets from the literature, we characterize ${\sim}30,000$ independent sightlines where CO is detected at good significance. $\Sigma$ and $\sigma$ show a strong positive correlation, with the best-fit power law slope close to the expected value for resolved, self-gravitating clouds. This indicates only weak variation in the virial parameter $\alpha_\mathrm{vir}\propto\sigma^2/\Sigma$, which is ${\sim}1.5$-$3.0$ for most galaxies. We do, however, observe enormous variation in the internal turbulent pressure $P_\mathrm{turb}\propto\Sigma\,\sigma^2$, which spans ${\sim}5\rm\;dex$ across our sample. We find $\Sigma$, $\sigma$, and $P_\mathrm{turb}$ to be systematically larger in more massive galaxies. The same quantities appear enhanced in the central kpc of strongly barred galaxies relative to their disks. Based on sensitive maps of M31 and M33, the slope of the $\sigma$-$\Sigma$ relation flattens at $\Sigma\lesssim10\rm\;M_\odot\,pc^{-2}$, leading to high $\sigma$ for a given $\Sigma$ and high apparent $\alpha_\mathrm{vir}$. This echoes results found in the Milky Way, and likely originates from a combination of lower beam filling factors and a stronger influence of local environment on the dynamical state of molecular gas in the low density regime., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ. 45 pages, 11 figures, 8 tables, 4 Appendices; key results summarized in Figure 10. We compare observed far infra-red/sub-millimetre (FIR/sub-mm) galaxy spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of massive galaxies ($M_{\star}\gtrsim10^{10}$ $h^{-1}$M$_{\odot}$) derived through a stacking analysis with predictions from a new model of galaxy formation. The FIR SEDs of the model galaxies are calculated using a self-consistent model for the absorption and re-emission of radiation by interstellar dust based on radiative transfer calculations and global energy balance arguments. Galaxies are selected based on their position on the specific star formation rate (sSFR) - stellar mass ($M_{\star}$) plane. We identify a main sequence of star-forming galaxies in the model, i.e. a well defined relationship between sSFR and $M_\star$, up to redshift $z\sim6$. The scatter of this relationship evolves such that it is generally larger at higher stellar masses and higher redshifts. There is remarkable agreement between the predicted and observed average SEDs across a broad range of redshifts ($0.5\lesssim z\lesssim4$) for galaxies on the main sequence. However, the agreement is less good for starburst galaxies at $z\gtrsim2$, selected here to have elevated sSFRs$>10\times$ the main sequence value. We find that the predicted average SEDs are robust to changing the parameters of our dust model within physically plausible values. We also show that the dust temperature evolution of main sequence galaxies in the model is driven by star formation on the main sequence being more burst-dominated at higher redshifts., 20 pages, 13 figures. We present observations of the dense molecular gas tracers HCN, HNC, and HCO+ in the J=1-0 transition using ALMA. We supplement our datasets with previous observations of CO J=1-0, which traces the total molecular gas content. We separate the Antennae into 7 bright regions in which we detect emission from all three molecules, including the nuclei of NGC 4038 and NGC 4039, 5 super giant molecular complexes in the overlap region and 2 additional bright clouds. We find that the ratio of L(HCN)/L(CO), which traces the dense molecular gas fraction, is greater in the two nuclei (L(HCN)/L(CO) ~ 0.07 - 0.08) than in the overlap region (L(HCN)/L(CO) = 5% - 10% of the PDR surface heating to the total heating budget. Finally, the ratio of L(HCN)/L(HCO+) varies from ~1 in the nucleus of NGC 4038 down to ~0.5 in the overlap region. The lower ratio in the overlap region may be due to an increase in the cosmic ray rate from the increased supernova rate within this region., Accepted to ApJ; 12 pages
