In this work, we present SoFT: Solar Feature Tracking, a novel feature-tracking tool developed in Python and designed to detect, identify, and track magnetic elements in the solar atmosphere. It relies on a watershed segmentation algorithm to effectively detect magnetic clumps within magnetograms, which are then associated across successive frames to follow the motion of magnetic structures in the photosphere. Here, we study its reliability in detecting and tracking features under different noise conditions starting with real-world data observed with SDO/HMI and followed with simulation data obtained from the Bifrost numerical code to better replicate the movements and shape of actual magnetic structures observed in the Sun's atmosphere within a controlled noise environment., Comment: Accepted on A&A

It is well known that the dominant frequency of oscillations in the solar photosphere is $\approx$3 mHz, which is the result of global resonant modes pertaining to the whole stellar structure. However, analyses of the horizontal motions of nearly 1 million photospheric magnetic elements spanning the entirety of solar cycle 24 have revealed an unexpected dominant frequency, $\approx$5 mHz, a frequency typically synonymous with the chromosphere. Given the distinctly different physical properties of the magnetic elements examined in our statistical sample, when compared to largely quiescent solar plasma where $\approx$3 mHz frequencies are omnipresent, we argue that the dominant $\approx$5 mHz frequency is not caused by the buffeting of magnetic elements, but instead is due to the nature of the underlying oscillatory driver itself. This novel result was obtained by exploiting the unmatched spatial and temporal coverage of magnetograms acquired by the Helioseismic and Magnetic Imager (HMI) on board NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO). The magnetic geometry of the solar atmosphere, combined with projection effects, makes it difficult to accurately map the propagation of ubiquitous waves in fibrillar structures. These waves are of interest due to their ability to carry energy into the chromosphere and deposit it through damping and dissipation mechanisms. To this end, the Interferometric Bidimensional Spectrometer (IBIS) at the Dunn Solar Telescope was employed to capture high resolution H$\alpha$ spectral scans of a sunspot, with the transverse oscillations of a prominent super-penumbral fibril examined in depth. The oscillations are re-projected from the helioprojective-cartesian frame to a new frame of reference oriented along the average fibril axis through non-linear force-free field extrapolations. The fibril was found to be carrying an elliptically polarised, propagating kink oscillation with a period of $430$ s and a phase velocity of $69\pm4$ km s$^{-1}$. The oscillation is damped as it propagates away from the sunspot with a damping length of approximately $9.2$ Mm, resulting in the energy flux decreasing at a rate on the order of $460$ W m$^{-2}$/Mm. The H$\alpha$ line width is examined and found to increase with distance from the sunspot; a potential sign of a temperature increase. Different linear and non-linear mechanisms are investigated for the damping of the wave energy flux, but a first-order approximation of their combined effects is insufficient to recreate the observed damping length by a factor of at least $3$. Solar pores are intense concentrations of magnetic flux that emerge through the Sun's photosphere. When compared to sunspots, they are much smaller in diameter and hence can be impacted and buffeted by neighbouring granular activity to generate significant magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) wave energy flux within their confines. However, observations of solar pores from ground-based telescope facilities may struggle to capture subtle motions synonymous with higher-order MHD wave signatures due to seeing effects produced in the Earth's atmosphere. Hence, we have exploited timely seeing-free and high-quality observations of four small magnetic pores from the Polarimetric and Helioseismic Imager (PHI) on board the Solar Orbiter spacecraft. Through acquisition of data under stable observing conditions, we have been able to measure the area fluctuations and horizontal displacements of the solar pores. Cross correlations between perturbations in intensity, area, line-of-sight velocity, and magnetic fields, coupled with the first-time application of novel Proper Orthogonal Decomposition (POD) techniques on the boundary oscillations, provide a comprehensive diagnosis of the embedded MHD waves as sausage and kink modes. Additionally, the previously elusive m = 2 fluting mode is identified in the most magnetically isolated of the four pores. An important consideration lies in how the identified wave modes contribute towards the transfer of energy into the upper solar atmosphere. We find that the four pores examined have approximately 56%, 72%, 52%, and 34% of their total wave energy associated with the identified sausage modes, and around 23%, 17%, 39%, and 49% to their kink modes, respectively, while the first pore also has around an 11% contribution linked to the fluting mode. The solar physics community is entering a golden era that is ripe with next-generation ground- and space-based facilities. With ever-increasing resolving power stemming from the newest observational telescopes, it becomes more challenging to obtain (near-)simultaneous measurements at high spatial, temporal and spectral resolutions, while operating at the diffraction limit of these new facilities. Hence, in recent years there has been increased interest in the capabilities integral field units (IFUs) offer towards obtaining the trifecta of high spatial, temporal and spectral resolutions contemporaneously. To date, IFUs developed for solar physics research have focused on mid-optical and infrared measurements. Here, we present an IFU prototype that has been designed for operation within the near-ultraviolet to mid-optical wavelength range, hence providing additional spectral coverage to the instrument suites developed to date. The IFU was constructed as a low-budget proof-of-concept for the upcoming 2m class Indian National Large Solar Telescope and employs circular cross-section fibres to guide light into a Czerny-Turner configuration spectrograph, with the resulting spectra captured using a high quantum efficiency scientific CMOS camera. Mapping of each input fibre allows for the reconstruction of two-dimensional spectral images, with frame rates exceeding 20 per second possible while operating in a non-polarimetric configuration. The science verification data presented here highlights the suitability of fibre-fed IFUs operating at near-ultraviolet wavelengths for solar physics research. Importantly, the successful demonstration of this type of instrument paves the way for further technological developments to make a future variant suitable for upcoming ground-based and space-borne telescope facilities., Comment: 53 pages, 16 figures, accepted for publication by Solar Physics

Previous examinations of fully-convective M-dwarf stars have highlighted enhanced rates of nanoflare activity on these distant stellar sources. However, the specific role the convective boundary, which is believed to be present for spectral types earlier than M2.5V, plays on the observed nanoflare rates is not yet known. Here, we utilize a combination of statistical and Fourier techniques to examine M-dwarf stellar lightcurves that lie on either side of the convective boundary. We find that fully convective M2.5V (and later sub-types) stars have greatly enhanced nanoflare rates compared with their pre-dynamo mode transition counterparts. Specifically, we derive a flaring power-law index in the region of $3.00 \pm 0.20$, alongside a decay timescale of $200 \pm 100$~s for M2.5V and M3V stars, matching those seen in prior observations of similar stellar sub-types. Interestingly, M4V stars exhibit longer decay timescales of $450 \pm 50$~s, along with an increased power-law index of $3.10 \pm 0.18$, suggesting an interplay between the rate of nanoflare occurrence and the intrinsic plasma parameters, for example, the underlying Lundquist number. In contrast, partially convective (i.e., earlier sub-types from M0V to M2V) M-dwarf stars exhibit very weak nanoflare activity, which is not easily identifiable using statistical or Fourier techniques. This suggests that fully convective stellar atmospheres favor small-scale magnetic reconnection, leading to implications for the flare-energy budgets of these stars. We present the first quiet Sun spectropolarimetric observations obtained with the Visible SpectroPolarimeter (ViSP) at the $4-$m Daniel K. Inouye Solar Telescope (DKIST). We recorded observations in a wavelength range that includes the magnetically sensitive Fe I $6301.5/6302.5$ $\AA$ doublet. With an estimated spatial resolution of 0.08'', this represents the highest spatial resolution full-vector spectropolarimetric observations ever obtained of the quiet Sun. We identified $53$ small-scale magnetic elements, including $47$ magnetic loops and $4$ unipolar magnetic patches, with linear and circular polarisation detected in all of them. Of particular interest is a magnetic element in which the polarity of the magnetic vector appears to change three times in only $400$ km and which has linear polarisation signals throughout. We find complex Stokes $V$ profiles at the polarity inversion lines of magnetic loops and discover degenerate solutions, as we are unable to conclusively determine whether these arise due to gradients in the atmospheric parameters or smearing of opposite polarity signals. We analyse a granule which notably has linear and circular polarisation signals throughout, providing an opportunity to explore its magnetic properties. On this small scale we see the magnetic field strength range from $25$ G at the granular boundary to $2$ kG in the intergranular lane (IGL), and sanity check the values with the weak and strong field approximations. Through their lifetime sunspots undergo a change in their area and shape and, as they decay, they fragment into smaller structures. Here, for the first time we analyze the spatial structure of magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) slow body and fast surface modes in observed umbrae as their cross-sectional shape changes. The Proper Orthogonal Decomposition (POD) and Dynamic Mode Decomposition (DMD) techniques were used to analyze 3 and 6 hours SDO/HMI time series of Doppler velocities at the photospheric level of approximately circular and elliptically shaped sunspots. Each time series were divided equally into time intervals, to evidence the change of the sunspots' shape. To identify physical wave modes, the POD/DMD modes were cross-correlated with a slow body mode model using the exact shape of the umbra, whereas the shape obtained by applying a threshold level of the mean intensity for every time interval. Our results show that the spatial structure of MHD modes are affected, even by apparently small changes of the umbral shape, especially in the case of the higher-order modes. For the datasets used in our study, the optimal time intervals to consider the influence of the change in the shape on the observed MHD modes is 37 - 60 minutes. The choice of these intervals is crucial to properly quantify the energy contribution of each wave mode to the power spectrum.

Solar pores are efficient magnetic conduits for propagating magnetohydrodynamic wave energy into the outer regions of the solar atmosphere. Pore observations often contain isolated and/or unconnected structures, preventing the statistical examination of wave activity as a function of atmospheric height. Here, using high resolution observations acquired by the Dunn Solar Telescope, we examine photospheric and chromospheric wave signatures from a unique collection of magnetic pores originating from the same decaying sunspot. Wavelet analysis of high cadence photospheric imaging reveals the ubiquitous presence of slow sausage mode oscillations, coherent across all photospheric pores through comparisons of intensity and area fluctuations, producing statistically significant in-phase relationships. The universal nature of these waves allowed an investigation of whether the wave activity remained coherent as they propagate. Utilizing bi-sector Doppler velocity analysis of the Ca II 8542 {\AA} line, alongside comparisons of the modeled spectral response function, we find fine-scale 5 mHz power amplification as the waves propagate into the chromosphere. Phase angles approaching zero degrees between co-spatial bi-sectors spanning different line depths indicate standing sausage modes following reflection against the transition region boundary. Fourier analysis of chromospheric velocities between neighboring pores reveals the annihilation of the wave coherency observed in the photosphere, with examination of the intensity and velocity signals from individual pores indicating they behave as fractured wave guides, rather than monolithic structures. Importantly, this work highlights that wave morphology with atmospheric height is highly complex, with vast differences observed at chromospheric layers, despite equivalent wave modes being introduced into similar pores in the photosphere., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ

Using high cadence observations from the Hydrogen-alpha Rapid Dynamics camera imaging system on the Dunn Solar Telescope, we present an investigation of the statistical properties of transverse oscillations in spicules captured above the solar limb. At five equally separated atmospheric heights, spanning approximately 4900-7500 km, we have detected a total of 15 959 individual wave events, with a mean displacement amplitude of 151 +/- 124 km, a mean period of 54 +/- 45 s, and a mean projected velocity amplitude of 21 +/- 13 km s^-1. We find that both the displacement and velocity amplitudes increase with height above the solar limb, ranging from 132 +/- 111 km and 17.7 +/- 10.6 km s^-1 at 4900 km, and 168 +/- 125 km and 26.3 +/- 14.1 km s^-1 at 7500 km, respectively. Following the examination of neighboring oscillations in time and space, we find 45% of the waves to be upwardly propagating, 49% to be downwardly propagating, and 6% to be standing, with mean absolute phase velocities for the propagating waves on the order of 75-150 km s^-1. While the energy flux of the waves propagating downwards does not appear to depend on height, we find the energy flux of the upwardly propagating waves decreases with atmospheric height at a rate of -13 200 +/- 6500 W m^-2 /Mm. As a result, this decrease in energy flux as the waves propagate upwards may provide significant thermal input into the local plasma., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ with 15 pages and 9 figures

In this paper we provide clear direct evidence of multiple concurrent higher order magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) modes in circular and elliptical sunspots by applying both Proper Orthogonal Decomposition (POD) and Dynamic Mode Decomposition (DMD) techniques on solar observational data. These techniques are well documented and validated in the areas of fluid mechanics, hydraulics, and granular flows, yet are relatively new to the field of solar physics. While POD identifies modes based on orthogonality in space and it provides a clear ranking of modes in terms of their contribution to the variance of the signal, DMD resolves modes that are orthogonal in time. The clear presence of the fundamental slow sausage and kink body modes, as well as higher order slow sausage and kink body modes have been identified using POD and DMD analysis of the chromospheric H$\alpha$ line at 6562.808~{\AA} for both the circular and elliptical sunspots. Additionally, to the various slow body modes, evidence for the presence of the fast surface kink mode was found in the circular sunspot. All the MHD modes patterns were cross-correlated with their theoretically predicted counterparts and we demonstrated that ellipticity cannot be neglected when interpreting MHD wave modes. The higher-order MHD wave modes are even more sensitive to irregularities in umbral cross-sectional shapes, hence this must be taken into account for more accurate modelling of the modes in sunspots and pores., Comment: Figures 21 and 22 should be presented in the appendix section and then followed by references

In \citet{Stangalini20} and \citet{Deb20}, magnetic oscillations were detected in the chromosphere of a large sunspot and found to be linked to the coronal locations where a First Ionization Potential (FIP) effect was observed. In an attempt to shed light onto the possible excitation mechanisms of these localized waves, we further investigate the same data by focussing on the relation between the spatial distribution of the magnetic wave power and the overall field geometry and plasma parameters obtained from multi-height spectropolarimetric non-local thermodynamic equilibrium (NLTE) inversions of IBIS data. We find that, in correspondence with the locations where the magnetic wave energy is observed at chromospheric heights, the magnetic fields have smaller scale heights, meaning faster expansions of the field lines, which ultimately results in stronger vertical density stratification and wave steepening. In addition, the acoustic spectrum of the oscillations at the locations where magnetic perturbations are observed is broader than that observed at other locations, which suggests an additional forcing driver to the p-modes. Analysis of the photospheric oscillations in the sunspot surroundings also reveals a broader spectrum in between the two opposite polarities of the active region (the leading spot and the trailing opposite polarity plage), and on the same side where magnetic perturbations are observed in the umbra. We suggest that strong photospheric perturbations in between the two polarities are responsible for this broader spectrum of oscillations, with respect to the $p$-mode spectrum, resulting in locally-excited acoustic waves that, after crossing the equipartition layer, located close to the umbra-penumbra boundary at photopheric heights, are converted into magnetic-like waves and steepen due to the strong density gradient., Comment: 9 pages, 7 figures, for publication in A&A

The importance of the chromosphere in the mass and energy transport within the solar atmosphere is now widely recognised. This review discusses the physics of magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) waves and instabilities in large-scale chromospheric structures as well as in magnetic flux tubes. We highlight a number of key observational aspects that have helped our understanding of the role of the solar chromosphere in various dynamic processes and wave phenomena, and the heating scenario of the solar chromosphere is also discussed. The review focuses on the physics of waves and invokes the basics of plasma instabilities in the context of this important layer of the solar atmosphere. The umbral regions of sunspots and pores in the solar photosphere are generally dominated by $3$~mHz oscillations, which are due to $p$-modes penetrating the magnetic region. In these locations, wave power is also significantly reduced with respect to the quiet Sun. However, here we study a pore where the power of the oscillations in the umbra is not only comparable, or even larger than that of the quiet Sun, but the main dominant frequency is not $3$~mHz as expected, but instead $5$~mHz. By combining Doppler velocities and spectropolarimetry and analysing the relationship between magnetic field strength and frequency, the resultant $B-\omega$ diagram reveals distinct ridges which are remarkably clear signatures of resonant MHD oscillations confined within the pore umbra. In addition to velocity oscillations, we demonstrate that these modes are also accompanied by magnetic oscillations, as predicted from MHD theory. The novel technique of $B-\omega$ analysis, proposed in this Letter, opens an exciting new avenue for identifying MHD wave modes in the umbral regions of both pores and sunspots., Comment: Accepted in A&A

In this study, we investigate the spatial distribution of highly varying plasma composition around one of the largest sunspots of solar cycle 24. Observations of the photosphere, chromosphere, and corona are brought together with magnetic field modelling of the sunspot in order to probe the conditions which regulate the degree of plasma fractionation within loop populations of differing connectivities. We find that in the coronal magnetic field above the sunspot umbra, the plasma has photospheric composition. Coronal loops rooted in the penumbra contain fractionated plasma, with the highest levels observed in the loops that connect within the active region. Tracing field lines from regions of fractionated plasma in the corona to locations of Alfvenic fluctuations detected in the chromosphere shows that they are magnetically linked. High resolution solar observations show the complex structure of the magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) wave motion. We apply the techniques of POD and DMD to identify the dominant MHD wave modes in a sunspot using the intensity time series. The POD technique was used to find modes that are spatially orthogonal, whereas the DMD technique identifies temporal orthogonality. Here we show that the combined POD and DMD approaches can successfully identify both sausage and kink modes in a sunspot umbra with an approximately circular cross-sectional shape.

The instrumental advances made in this new era of 4-meter class solar telescopes with unmatched spectropolarimetric accuracy and sensitivity, will enable the study of chromospheric magnetic fields and their dynamics with unprecedented detail. In this regard, spectropolarimetric diagnostics can provide invaluable insight into magneto-hydrodynamic (MHD) wave processes. MHD waves and, in particular, Alfv\'enic fluctuations associated to particular wave modes, were recently recognized as important mechanisms not only for the heating of the outer layers of the Sun's atmosphere and the acceleration of the solar wind, but also for the elemental abundance anomaly observed in the corona of the Sun and other Sun-like stars (also known as first ionisation potential; FIP) effect. Here, we take advantage of state-of-the-art and unique spectropolarimetric IBIS observations to investigate the relation between intensity and circular polarisation (CP) fluctuations in a sunspot chromosphere. Our results show a clear link between the intensity and CP fluctuations in a patch which corresponds to a narrow range of magnetic field inclinations. The formation of shocks within the solar atmosphere remains one of the few observable signatures of energy dissipation arising from the plethora of magnetohydrodynamic waves generated close to the solar surface. Active region observations offer exceptional views of wave behavior and its impact on the surrounding atmosphere. The stratified plasma gradients present in the lower solar atmosphere allow for the potential formation of many theorized shock phenomena. In this study, using chromospheric Ca II 854.2nm spectropolarimetric data of a large sunspot, we examine fluctuations in the plasma parameters in the aftermath of powerful shock events that demonstrate polarimetric reversals during their evolution. Modern inversion techniques are employed to uncover perturbations in the temperatures, line-of-sight velocities, and vector magnetic fields occurring across a range of optical depths synonymous with the shock formation. Classification of these non-linear signatures is carried out by comparing the observationally-derived slow, fast, and Alfv\'en shock solutions to the theoretical Rankine-Hugoniot relations. Employing over 200,000 independent measurements, we reveal that the Alfv\'en (intermediate) shock solution provides the closest match between theory and observations at optical depths of log(tau) = -4, consistent with a geometric height at the boundary between the upper photosphere and lower chromosphere. This work uncovers first-time evidence of the manifestation of chromospheric intermediate shocks in sunspot umbrae, providing a new method for the potential thermalization of wave energy in a range of magnetic structures, including pores, magnetic flux ropes, and magnetic bright points., Comment: 17 pages, 9 figures, accepted by ApJ

The rapid damping of slow magnetoacoustic waves in the solar corona has been extensively studied in previous years. Most studies suggest that thermal conduction is a dominant contributor to this damping, albeit with a few exceptions. Employing extreme-ultraviolet (EUV) imaging data from SDO/AIA, we measure the damping lengths of propagating slow magnetoacoustic waves observed in several fan-like loop structures using two independent methods. The dependence of the damping length on temperature has been studied for the first time. The results do not indicate any apparent decrease in damping length with temperature, which is in contrast to the existing viewpoint. Comparing with the corresponding theoretical values calculated from damping due to thermal conduction, it is inferred that thermal conduction is suppressed in hotter loops. An alternative interpretation that suggests thermal conduction is not the dominant damping mechanism, even for short period waves in warm active region loops, is also presented., Comment: Accepted for publication in Frontiers in Astronomy and Space Sciences

We report on a search for short-period intensity variations in the green-line FeXIV 530.3 nm emission from the solar corona during the 21 August 2017 total eclipse viewed from Idaho in the United States. Our experiment was performed with a much more sensitive detection system, and with better spatial resolution, than on previous occasions (1999 and 2001 eclipses), allowing fine details of quiet coronal loops and an active-region loop system to be seen. A guided 200-mm-aperture Schmidt-Cassegrain telescope was used with a state-of-the-art CCD camera having 16-bit intensity discrimination and a field-of-view 0.43 degree x 0.43 degree that encompassed approximately one third of the visible corona. The camera pixel size was 1.55 arcseconds, while the seeing during the eclipse enabled features of approx. 2 arcseconds (1450 km on the Sun) to be resolved. A total of 429 images were recorded during a 122.9 second portion of the totality at a frame rate of 3.49 images per second. In the analysis, we searched particularly for short-period intensity oscillations and travelling waves, since theory predicts fast-mode magneto-hydrodynamic (MHD) waves with short periods may be important in quiet coronal and active-region heating. Allowing first for various instrumental and photometric effects, we used a wavelet technique to search for periodicities in some 404 000 pixels in the frequency range 0.5-1.6 Hz (periods: 2 second to 0.6 second). We also searched for travelling waves along some 65 coronal structures. However, we found no statistically significant evidence in either. This negative result considerably refines the limit that we obtained from our previous analyses, and it indicates that future searches for short-period coronal waves may be better directed towards Doppler shifts as well as intensity oscillations.

We present results derived from the analysis of spectropolarimetric measurements of active region AR12546, which represents one of the largest sunspots to have emerged onto the solar surface over the last $20$ years. The region was observed with full-Stokes scans of the Fe I 617.3 nm and Ca II 854.2 nm lines with the Interferometric BIdimensional Spectrometer (IBIS) instrument at the Dunn Solar Telescope over an uncommon, extremely long time interval exceeding three hours. Clear circular polarization (CP) oscillations localized at the umbra-penumbra boundary of the observed region were detected. Furthermore, the multi-height data allowed us to detect the downward propagation of both CP and intensity disturbances at $2.5-3$~mHz, which was identified by a phase delay between these two quantities. Observations of slow magneto-acoustic waves have been demonstrated to possess a number of applications in coronal seismology. Determination of the polytropic index ($\gamma$) is one such important application. Analysing the amplitudes of oscillations in temperature and density corresponding to a slow magneto-acoustic wave, the polytropic index in the solar corona has been calculated and based on the obtained value it has been inferred that thermal conduction is highly suppressed in a very hot loop in contrast to an earlier report of high thermal conduction in a relatively colder loop. In this study, using SDO/AIA data, we analysed slow magneto-acoustic waves propagating along sunspot fan loops from 30 different active regions and computed polytropic indices for several loops at multiple spatial positions. The obtained $\gamma$ values vary from 1.04$\pm$0.01 to 1.58$\pm$0.12 and most importantly display a temperature dependence indicating higher $\gamma$ at hotter temperatures. This behaviour brings both the previous studies to agreement and perhaps implies a gradual suppression of thermal conduction with increase in temperature of the loop. The observed phase shifts between temperature and density oscillations, however, are substantially larger than that expected from a classical thermal conduction and appear to be influenced by a line-of-sight integration effect on the emission measure., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ

Magneto-hydrodynamic (MHD) Alfv\'en waves have been a focus of laboratory plasma physics and astrophysics for over half a century. Their unique nature makes them ideal energy transporters, and while the solar atmosphere provides preferential conditions for their existence, direct detection has proved difficult as a result of their evolving and dynamic observational signatures. The viability of Alfv\'en waves as a heating mechanism relies upon the efficient dissipation and thermalization of the wave energy, with direct evidence remaining elusive until now. Here we provide the first observational evidence of Alfv\'en waves heating chromospheric plasma in a sunspot umbra through the formation of shock fronts. The magnetic field configuration of the shock environment, alongside the tangential velocity signatures, distinguish them from conventional umbral flashes. Observed local temperature enhancements of 5% are consistent with the dissipation of mode-converted Alfv\'en waves driven by upwardly propagating magneto-acoustic oscillations, providing an unprecedented insight into the behaviour of Alfv\'en waves in the solar atmosphere and beyond., Comment: Letter: 7 pages, 4 figures. Chromospheric observations of sunspot umbrae offer an exceptional view of magneto-acoustic shock phenomena and the impact they have on the surrounding magnetically-dominated plasma. We employ simultaneous slit-based spectro-polarimetry and spectral imaging observations of the chromospheric He I 10830{\AA} and Ca II 8542{\AA} lines to examine fluctuations in the umbral magnetic field caused by the steepening of magneto-acoustic waves into umbral flashes. Following the application of modern inversion routines, we find evidence to support the scenario that umbral shock events cause expansion of the embedded magnetic field lines due to the increased adiabatic pressure. The large number statistics employed allow us to calculate the adiabatic index, gamma = 1.12 +/- 0.01, for chromospheric umbral locations. Examination of the vector magnetic field fluctuations perpendicular to the solar normal revealed changes up to ~200 G at the locations of umbral flashes. Such transversal magnetic field fluctuations have not been described before. Through comparisons with non-linear force-free field extrapolations, we find that the perturbations of the transverse field components are orientated in the same direction as the quiescent field geometries. This implies that magnetic field enhancements produced by umbral flashes are directed along the motion path of the developing shock, hence producing relatively small changes, up to a maximum of ~8 degrees, in the inclination and/or azimuthal directions of the magnetic field. High spatial and temporal resolution images of a sunspot, obtained simultaneously in multiple optical and UV wavelengths, are employed to study the propagation and damping characteristics of slow magnetoacoustic waves up to transition region heights. Power spectra are generated from intensity oscillations in sunspot umbra, across multiple atmospheric heights, for frequencies up to a few hundred mHz. It is observed that the power spectra display a power-law dependence over the entire frequency range, with a significant enhancement around 5.5 mHz found for the chromospheric channels. The phase-difference spectra reveal a cutoff frequency near 3 mHz, up to which the oscillations are evanescent, while those with higher frequencies propagate upwards. The power-law index appears to increase with atmospheric height. Also, shorter damping lengths are observed for oscillations with higher frequencies suggesting frequency-dependent damping. Using the relative amplitudes of the 5.5 mHz (3 minute) oscillations, we estimate the energy flux at different heights, which seems to decay gradually from the photosphere, in agreement with recent numerical simulations. Furthermore, a comparison of power spectra across the umbral radius highlights an enhancement of high-frequency waves near the umbral center, which does not seem to be related to magnetic field inclination angle effects., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ

A detailed knowledge of stellar activity is crucial for understanding stellar dynamos, as well as pushing exoplanet radial-velocity detection limits towards Earth analogue confirmation. We directly compare archival HARPS spectra taken at the minimum in $\alpha$ Cen B's activity cycle to a high-activity state when clear rotational modulation of $\log{R'_{HK}}$ is visible. Relative to the inactive spectra, we find a large number of narrow pseudo-emission features in the active spectra with strengths that are rotationally modulated. These features most likely originate from plage, spots, or a combination of both. They also display radial velocity variations of $\sim$300 m s$^{-1}$ - consistent with an active region rotating across the stellar surface. Furthermore, we see evidence that some of the lines originating from the `active immaculate' photosphere appear broader relative to the `inactive immaculate' case. This may be due to enhanced contributions of e.g. magnetic bright points to these lines, which then causes additional line broadening. Coronal loops, constituting the basic building blocks of the active Sun, serve as primary targets to help understand the mechanisms responsible for maintaining multi-million Kelvin temperatures in the solar and stellar coronae. Despite significant advances in observations and theory, our knowledge on the fundamental properties of these structures is limited. Here, we present unprecedented observations of accelerating slow magnetoacoustic waves along a coronal loop that show differential propagation speeds in two distinct temperature channels, revealing the multi-stranded and multi-thermal nature of the loop. Utilizing the observed speeds and employing nonlinear force-free magnetic field extrapolations, we derive the actual temperature variation along the loop in both channels, and thus are able to resolve two individual components of the multi-thermal loop for the first time. The obtained positive temperature gradients indicate uniform heating along the loop, rather than isolated footpoint heating., Comment: accepted for publication in ApJ

We study the temporal evolution of the Na I D1 line profiles in the M3.9 flare SOL2014-06-11T21:03 UT, using high spectral resolution observations obtained with the IBIS instrument on the Dunn Solar Telescope combined with radiative hydrodynamic simulations. Our results show a significant increase in line core and wing intensities during the flare. The analysis of the line profiles from the flare ribbons reveal that the Na I D1 line has a central reversal with excess emission in the blue wing (blue asymmetry). We combine RADYN and RH simulations to synthesise Na I D1 line profiles of the flaring atmosphere and find good agreement with the observations. Heating with a beam of electrons modifies the radiation field in the flaring atmosphere and excites electrons from the ground state $\mathrm{3s~^2S}$ to the first excited state $\mathrm{3p~^2P}$, which in turn modifies relative population of the two states. The change in temperature and the population density of the energy states make the sodium line profile revert from absorption into emission. Analysis of the simulated spectra also reveals that the Na I D1 flare profile asymmetries are produced by the velocity gradients generated %and opacity effects in the lower solar atmosphere., Comment: 7 pages, 8 figures, accepted in ApJ

Sunspots on the surface of the Sun are the observational signatures of intense manifestations of tightly packed magnetic field lines, with near-vertical field strengths exceeding 6,000 G in extreme cases. It is well accepted that both the plasma density and the magnitude of the magnetic field strength decrease rapidly away from the solar surface, making high-cadence coronal measurements through traditional Zeeman and Hanle effects difficult since the observational signatures are fraught with low-amplitude signals that can become swamped with instrumental noise. Magneto-hydrodynamic (MHD) techniques have previously been applied to coronal structures, with single and spatially isolated magnetic field strengths estimated as 9-55 G. A drawback with previous MHD approaches is that they rely on particular wave modes alongside the detectability of harmonic overtones. Here we show, for the first time, how omnipresent magneto-acoustic waves, originating from within the underlying sunspot and propagating radially outwards, allow the spatial variation of the local coronal magnetic field to be mapped with high precision. We find coronal magnetic field strengths of 32 +/- 5 G above the sunspot, which decrease rapidly to values of approximately 1 G over a lateral distance of 7000 km, consistent with previous isolated and unresolved estimations. Oscillation amplitudes are generally smaller within magnetically active regions like sunspots and plage, when compared to their surroundings. Such magnetic features, when viewed in spatially-resolved powermaps, appear as regions of suppressed power due to reductions in the oscillation amplitudes. Employing high spatial- and temporal-resolution observations from the Dunn Solar Telescope (DST) in New Mexico, we study the power suppression in a region of evolving magnetic fields adjacent to a pore. By utilising wavelet analysis, we study for the first time, how the oscillatory properties in this region change as the magnetic field evolves with time. Image sequences taken in the blue continuum, G-band, Ca~\textsc{ii}~K and H$\alpha$ filters were used in this study. It is observed that the suppression found in the chromosphere occupies a relatively larger area confirming previous findings. Also, the suppression is extended to structures directly connected to the magnetic region and is found to get enhanced as the magnetic field strength increased with time. The dependence of the suppression on the magnetic field strength is greater at longer periods and higher formation heights. Recent high-resolution observations of sunspot oscillations using simultaneously operated ground- and space-based telescopes reveal the intrinsic connection between different layers of the solar atmosphere. However, it is not clear whether these oscillations are externally driven or generated in-situ. We address this question by using observations of propagating slow magneto-acoustic waves along a coronal fan loop system. In addition to the generally observed decreases in oscillation amplitudes with distance, the observed wave amplitudes are also found to be modulated with time, with similar variations observed throughout the propagation path of the wavetrain. Employing multi-wavelength and multi-instrument data we study the amplitude variations with time as the waves propagate through different layers of the solar atmosphere. By comparing the amplitude-modulation period in different layers, we find that slow magneto-acoustic waves observed in sunspots are externally driven by photospheric p-modes, which propagate upwards into the corona before becoming dissipated., Comment: accepted for publication in ApJ Letters

We present observational evidence of compressible magnetohydrodynamic wave modes propagating from the solar photosphere through to the base of the transition region in a solar magnetic pore. High cadence images were obtained simultaneously across four wavelength bands using the Dunn Solar Telescope. Employing Fourier and wavelet techniques, sausage-mode oscillations displaying significant power were detected in both intensity and area fluctuations. The intensity and area fluctuations exhibit a range of periods from 181-412s, with an average period ~290s, consistent with the global p-mode spectrum. Intensity and area oscillations present in adjacent bandpasses were found to be out-of-phase with one another, displaying phase angles of 6.12 degrees, 5.82 degrees and 15.97 degrees between 4170 Angstrom continuum - G-band, G-band - Na I D1 and Na I D1 - Ca II K heights, respectively, reiterating the presence of upwardly-propagating sausage-mode waves. A phase relationship of ~0 degrees between same-bandpass emission and area perturbations of the pore best categorises the waves as belonging to the `slow' regime of a dispersion diagram. Theoretical calculations reveal that the waves are surface modes, with initial photospheric energies in excess of 35000 W/m^2. The wave energetics indicate a substantial decrease in energy with atmospheric height, confirming that magnetic pores are able to transport waves that exhibit appreciable energy damping, which may release considerable energy into the local chromospheric plasma., Comment: 14 pages, 5 figures, accepted into ApJ

Within the last decade, due to significant improvements in the spatial and temporal resolution of chromospheric data, magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) wave studies in this fascinating region of the Sun's atmosphere have risen to the forefront of solar physics research. In this review we begin by reviewing the challenges and debates that have manifested in relation to MHD wave mode identification in fine-scale chromospheric magnetic structures, including spicules, fibrils and mottles. Next we go on to discuss how the process of accurately identifying MHD wave modes also has a crucial role to play in estimating their wave energy flux. This is of cardinal importance for estimating what the possible contribution of MHD waves is to solar atmospheric heating. The chromosphere is a thin layer of the solar atmosphere that bridges the relatively cool photosphere and the intensely heated transition region and corona. Compressible and incompressible waves propagating through the chromosphere can supply significant amounts of energy to the interface region and corona. In recent years an abundance of high-resolution observations from state-of-the-art facilities have provided new and exciting ways of disentangling the characteristics of oscillatory phenomena propagating through the dynamic chromosphere. Coupled with rapid advancements in magnetohydrodynamic wave theory, we are now in an ideal position to thoroughly investigate the role waves play in supplying energy to sustain chromospheric and coronal heating. We use ground-based images of high spatial and temporal resolution to search for evidence of nanoflare activity in the solar chromosphere. Through close examination of more than 10^9 pixels in the immediate vicinity of an active region, we show that the distributions of observed intensity fluctuations have subtle asymmetries. A negative excess in the intensity fluctuations indicates that more pixels have fainter-than-average intensities compared with those that appear brighter than average. By employing Monte Carlo simulations, we reveal how the negative excess can be explained by a series of impulsive events, coupled with exponential decays, that are fractionally below the current resolving limits of low-noise equipment on high-resolution ground-based observatories. Importantly, our Monte Carlo simulations provide clear evidence that the intensity asymmetries cannot be explained by photon-counting statistics alone. A comparison to the coronal work of Terzo et al. (2011) suggests that nanoflare activity in the chromosphere is more readily occurring, with an impulsive event occurring every ~360s in a 10,000 km^2 area of the chromosphere, some 50 times more events than a comparably sized region of the corona. As a result, nanoflare activity in the chromosphere is likely to play an important role in providing heat energy to this layer of the solar atmosphere., Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures, accepted into ApJ

We investigate intensity variations and energy deposition in five coronal loops in active region cores. These were selected for their strong variability in the AIA/SDO 94 {\AA} intensity channel. We isolate the hot Fe XVIII and Fe XXI components of the 94 {\AA} and 131 {\AA} by modeling and subtracting the "warm" contributions to the emission. HMI/SDO data allow us to concentrate on "inter-moss" regions in the loops. The detailed evolution of the inter-moss intensity time series reveals loops that are impulsively heated in a mode compatible with a nanoflare storm, with a spike in the hot 131 {\AA} signals leading and the other five EUV emission channels following in progressive cooling order. A sharp increase in electron temperature tends to follow closely after the hot 131 {\AA} signal confirming the impulsive nature of the process. A cooler process of growing emission measure follows more slowly. The Fourier power spectra of the hot 131 {\AA} signals, when averaged over the five loops, present three scaling regimes with break frequencies at (0.1/min) and (0.7/min). The low frequency regime corresponds to 1/f noise; the intermediate indicates a persistent scaling process and the high frequencies show white noise. Very similar results are found for the energy dissipation in a 2-D "hybrid" shell model of loop magneto-turbulence, based on reduced magnetohydrodynamics, which is compatible with nanoflare statistics. We use images of high spatial and temporal resolution, obtained using both ground- and space-based instrumentation, to investigate the role magnetic field inclination angles play in the propagation characteristics of running penumbral waves in the solar chromosphere. Analysis of a near-circular sunspot, close to the center of the solar disk, reveals a smooth rise in oscillatory period as a function of distance from the umbral barycenter. However, in one directional quadrant, corresponding to the north direction, a pronounced kink in the period-distance diagram is found. Utilizing a combination of the inversion of magnetic Stokes vectors and force-free field extrapolations, we attribute this behaviour to the cut-off frequency imposed by the magnetic field geometry in this location. A rapid, localised inclination of the magnetic field lines in the north direction results in a faster increase in the dominant periodicity due to an accelerated reduction in the cut-off frequency. For the first time we reveal how the spatial distribution of dominant wave periods, obtained with one of the highest resolution solar instruments currently available, directly reflects the magnetic geometry of the underlying sunspot, thus opening up a wealth of possibilities in future magneto-hydrodynamic seismology studies. In addition, the intrinsic relationships we find between the underlying magnetic field geometries connecting the photosphere to the chromosphere, and the characteristics of running penumbral waves observed in the upper chromosphere, directly supports the interpretation that running penumbral wave phenomena are the chromospheric signature of upwardly-propagating magneto-acoustic waves generated in the photosphere., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ (11 pages, 5 figures)

Using data obtained by the high temporal and spatial resolution Rapid Oscillations in the Solar Atmosphere (ROSA) instrument on the Dunn Solar Telescope, we investigate at an unprecedented level of detail transverse oscillations in chromospheric fine structures near the solar disk center. The oscillations are interpreted in terms of propagating and standing magnetohydrodynamic kink waves. Wave characteristics including the maximum transverse velocity amplitude and the phase speed are measured as a function of distance along the structure's length. Solar magneto-seismology is applied to these measured parameters to obtain diagnostic information on key plasma parameters (e.g., magnetic field, density, temperature, flow speed) of these localised waveguides. The magnetic field strength of the mottle along the $\sim$2 Mm length is found to decrease by a factor of 12, while the local plasma density scale height is $\sim280\pm$80 km., Comment: 8 pages, 7 figures, accepted in ApJ

The details of the mechanism(s) responsible for the observed heating and dynamics of the solar atmosphere still remain a mystery. Magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) waves are thought to play a vital role in this process. Although it has been shown that incompressible waves are ubiquitous in off-limb solar atmospheric observations their energy cannot be readily dissipated. We provide here, for the first time, on-disk observation and identification of concurrent MHD wave modes, both compressible and incompressible, in the solar chromosphere. The observed ubiquity and estimated energy flux associated with the detected MHD waves suggest the chromosphere is a vast reservoir of wave energy with the potential to meet chromospheric and coronal heating requirements. We are also able to propose an upper bound on the flux of the observed wave energy that is able to reach the corona based on observational constraints, which has important implications for the suggested mechanism(s) for quiescent coronal heating., Comment: Published in Nature Communications, 3, 1315 (2012)

We study the formation and evolution of a failed filament eruption observed in NOAA active region 11121 near the southeast limb on November 6, 2010. We use a time series of SDO/AIA 304, 171, 131, 193, 335, 94 {\AA} images, SDO/HMI magnetograms, plus ROSA and ISOON H\alpha images, to study the erupting active region. We identify coronal loop arcades associated with a quadrupolar magnetic configuration, and show that the expansion and cancelation of the central loop arcade system over the filament is followed by the eruption of the filament. The erupting filament reveals a clear helical twist and develops a same sign of writhe in the form of inverse \gamma-shape. The observations support the "magnetic breakout" process with the eruption been triggered by quadrupolar reconnection in the corona. We suggest that the formation mechanism of the inverse \gamma-shape flux rope may be the MHD helical kink instability. High cadence, multi-wavelength observations and simulations are employed for the analysis of solar photospheric magnetic bright points (MBPs) in the quiet Sun. The observations were obtained with the Rapid Oscillations in the Solar Atmosphere (ROSA) imager and the Interferometric BIdimensional Spectrometer (IBIS) at the Dunn Solar Telescope. Our analysis reveals that photospheric MBPs have an average transverse velocity of approximately 1 km/s, whereas their chromospheric counterparts have a slightly higher average velocity of 1.4 km/s. Additionally, chromospheric MBPs were found to be around 63% larger than the equivalent photospheric MBPs. These velocity values were compared with the output of numerical simulations generated using the MURaM code. The simulated results were similar, but slightly elevated, when compared to the observed data. An average velocity of 1.3 km/s was found in the simulated G-band images and an average of 1.8 km/s seen in the velocity domain at a height of 500 km above the continuum formation layer. Delays in the change of velocities were also analysed. Average delays of ~4 s between layers of the simulated data set were established and values of ~29 s observed between G-band and Ca II K ROSA observations. We use images of high spatial, spectral and temporal resolution, obtained using both ground- and space-based instrumentation, to investigate the coupling between wave phenomena observed at numerous heights in the solar atmosphere. Intensity oscillations of 3 minutes are observed to encompass photospheric umbral dot structures, with power at least three orders-of-magnitude higher than the surrounding umbra. Simultaneous chromospheric velocity and intensity time series reveal an 87 \pm 8 degree out-of-phase behavior, implying the presence of standing modes created as a result of partial wave reflection at the transition region boundary. An average blue-shifted Doppler velocity of ~1.5 km/s, in addition to a time lag between photospheric and chromospheric oscillatory phenomena, confirms the presence of upwardly-propagating slow-mode waves in the lower solar atmosphere. Propagating oscillations in EUV intensity are detected in simultaneous coronal fan structures, with a periodicity of 172 \pm 17 s and a propagation velocity of 45 \pm 7 km/s. Numerical simulations reveal that the damping of the magneto-acoustic wave trains is dominated by thermal conduction. The coronal fans are seen to anchor into the photosphere in locations where large-amplitude umbral dot oscillations manifest. Derived kinetic temperature and emission measure time-series display prominent out-of-phase characteristics, and when combined with the previously established sub-sonic wave speeds, we conclude that the observed EUV waves are the coronal counterparts of the upwardly-propagating magneto-acoustic slow-modes detected in the lower solar atmosphere. A number of recent investigations have revealed that transverse waves are ubiquitous in the solar chromosphere. The vast majority of these have been reported in limb spicules and active region fibrils. We investigate long-lived, quiet Sun, on-disk features such as chromospheric mottles (jet-like features located at the boundaries of supergranular cells) and their transverse motions. The observations were obtained with the Rapid Oscillations in the Solar Atmosphere (ROSA) instrument at the Dunn Solar Telescope. The dataset comprises simultaneous imaging in the H$\alpha$ core, Ca II K, and G band of an on-disk quiet Sun region. Time-distance techniques are used to study the characteristics of the transverse oscillations. We detect over 40 transverse oscillations in both bright and dark mottles, with periods ranging from 70 to 280 s, with the most frequent occurrence at ~ 165 s. The velocity amplitudes and transverse displacements exhibit characteristics similar to limb spicules. Neighbouring mottles oscillating in-phase are also observed. The transverse oscillations of individual mottles are interpreted in terms of magnetohydrodynamic kink waves. We present high-cadence observations and simulations of the solar photosphere, obtained using the Rapid Oscillations in the Solar Atmosphere imaging system and the MuRAM magneto-hydrodynamic code, respectively. Each dataset demonstrates a wealth of magneto-acoustic oscillatory behaviour, visible as periodic intensity fluctuations with periods in the range 110-600 s. Almost no propagating waves with periods less than 140s and 110s are detected in the observational and simulated datasets, respectively. High concentrations of power are found in highly magnetised regions, such as magnetic bright points and intergranular lanes. Radiative diagnostics of the photospheric simulations replicate our observational results, confirming that the current breed of magneto-hydrodynamic simulations are able to accurately represent the lower solar atmosphere. All observed oscillations are generated as a result of naturally occurring magnetoconvective processes, with no specific input driver present. Using contribution functions extracted from our numerical simulations, we estimate minimum G-band and 4170 Angstrom continuum formation heights of 100 km and 25 km, respectively. Detected magneto-acoustic oscillations exhibit a dominant phase delay of -8 degrees between the G-band and 4170 Angstrom continuum observations, suggesting the presence of upwardly propagating waves. We use images of high spatial and temporal resolution, obtained with the Rapid Oscillations in the Solar Atmosphere instrument at the Dunn Solar Telescope, to reveal how the generation of transverse waves in Type I spicules is a direct result of longitudinal oscillations occurring in the photosphere. Here we show how pressure oscillations, with periodicities in the range 130 - 440 s, manifest in small-scale photospheric magnetic bright points, and generate kink waves in the Sun's outer atmosphere with transverse velocities approaching the local sound speed. Through comparison of our observations with advanced two-dimensional magneto-hydrodynamic simulations, we provide evidence for how magnetoacoustic oscillations, generated at the solar surface, funnel upwards along Type I spicule structures, before undergoing longitudinal-to-transverse mode conversion into waves at twice the initial driving frequency. The resulting kink modes are visible in chromospheric plasma, with periodicities of 65 -220 s, and amplitudes often exceeding 400 km. A sausage mode oscillation also arises as a consequence of the photospheric driver, which is visible in both simulated and observational time series. We conclude that the mode conversion and period modification is a direct consequence of the 90 degree phase shift encompassing opposite sides of the photospheric driver. The chromospheric energy flux of these waves are estimated to be approximately 300,000 W/m^2, which indicates that they are sufficiently energetic to accelerate the solar wind and heat the localized corona to its multi-million degree temperatures., Comment: Accepted as an ApJ Letter, 4 figures

The Rapid Oscillations in the Solar Atmosphere (ROSA) instrument reveals solar atmospheric fluctuations at high frequencies. Spectra of variations of the G-band intensity (IG) and CaII K-line intensity (IK) show correlated fluctuations above white noise to frequencies beyond 300 mHz and 50 mHz, respectively. The noise-corrected G-band spectrum for f = 28 - 326 mHz shows a power law with exponent -1.21 \pm, 0.02, consistent with the presence of turbulent motions. G-band spectral power in the 25 - 100 mHz ("UHF") range is concentrated at the locations of magnetic bright points in the intergranular lanes and is highly intermittent in time. The intermittence of the UHF G-band fluctuations, shown by a positive kurtosis {\kappa}, also suggests turbulence. Combining values of IG, IK, UHF power, and {\kappa}, reveals two distinct states of the solar atmosphere. State 1, including almost all the data, is characterized by low IG, IK, and UHF power and {\kappa} \approx 6. State 2, including only a very small fraction of the data, is characterized by high IG, IK, and UHF power and {\kappa} \approx 3. Superposed epoch analysis shows that the UHF power peaks simultaneously with spatio-temporal IG maxima in either state. For State 1, IK shows 3.5 min chromospheric oscillations with maxima occurring 21 s after IG maxima implying a 150 - 210 km effective height difference. Aims: On 13 June 1998, the TRACE satellite was fortuitously well placed to observe the effects of a flare-induced EIT wave in the corona, and its subsequent interaction with coronal magnetic loops. In this study, we use these TRACE observations to corroborate previous theoretical work, as well as estimate the magnetic field strength and the degree of longitudinal inhomogeneity. Methods: Loop edges are tracked, both spatially and temporally, using wavelet modulus maxima algorithms, with corresponding loop displacements from its quiescent state analysed by fitting scaled sinusoidal functions. The physical parameters of the coronal loop are subsequently determined using seismological techniques. RESULTS: The studied coronal loop is found to oscillate with two distinct periods, 501 +/- 5 s and 274 +/- 7 s, which could be interpreted as belonging to the fundamental and first harmonic, or could reflect the stage of an overdriven loop. When assuming the periods belong to the fundamental kink mode and its first harmonic, we obtain a magnetic field strength inside the oscillating coronal loop as 2.0 +/- 0.7 G. In contrast, interpreting the oscillations as a combination of the loop's natural kink frequency and a harmonious EIT wave provides a magnetic field strength of 5.8 +/- 1.5 G. Using the ratio of the two periods, we find that the gravitational scale height in the loop is 73 +/- 3 Mm. Conclusions: We show that the observation of two distinct periods in a coronal loop does not necessarily lead to a unique conclusion. High temporal and spatial resolution observations from the Rapid Oscillations in the Solar Atmosphere (ROSA) multiwavelength imager on the Dunn Solar Telescope are used to study the velocities of small-scale H{\alpha} jets in an emerging solar active region. The dataset comprises of simultaneous imaging in the H{\alpha} core, Ca II K, and G band, together with photo- spheric line-of-sight magnetograms. Time-distance techniques are employed to determine projected plane-of-sky velocities. The H{\alpha} images are highly dynamic in nature, with estimated jet velocities as high as 45 km s^{-1}. These jets are one-directional, with their origin seemingly linked to underlying Ca II K brightenings and G-band magnetic bright points. It is suggested that the siphon flow model of cool coronal loops is suitable for the interpretation of our observations. We present here evidence for the observation of the magneto-hydrodynamic (MHD) sausage modes in magnetic pores in the solar photosphere. Further evidence for the omnipresent nature of acoustic global modes is also found. The empirical decomposition method of wave analysis is used to identify the oscillations detected through a 4170 {\AA} 'blue continuum' filter observed with the Rapid Oscillations in the Solar Atmosphere (ROSA) instrument. Out of phase, periodic behavior in pore size and intensity is used as an indicator of the presence of magneto-acoustic sausage oscillations. Multiple signatures of the magneto-acoustic sausage mode are found in a number of pores. The periods range from as short as 30 s up to 450 s. A number of the magneto-acoustic sausage mode oscillations found have periods of 3 and 5 minutes, similar to the acoustic global modes of the solar interior. Magnetic Bright Points (MBPs) are among the smallest observable objects on the solar photosphere. A combination of G-band observations and numerical simulations is used to determine their area distribution. An automatic detection algorithm, employing 1-dimensional intensity profiling, is utilized to identify these structures in the observed and simulated datasets. Both distributions peak at an area of $\approx$45000 km$^2$, with a sharp decrease towards smaller areas. The distributions conform with log-normal statistics, which suggests that flux fragmentation dominates over flux convergence. Radiative magneto-convection simulations indicate an independence in the MBP area distribution for differing magnetic flux densities.
