We have performed the near-infrared photometric monitoring observations of two TeV gamma-ray binaries with O-stars (LS 5039 and 1FGL J1018.6-5856), using IRSF/SIRIUS at SAAO, in order to study the stellar parameters and their perturbations caused by the binary interactions. The whole orbital phase was observed multiple times and no significant variabilities including orbital modulations are detected for both targets. Assuming that the two systems are colliding wind binaries, we estimate the amplitude of flux variation caused by the difference in the optical depth of O-star wind at inferior conjunction, where the star is seen through the cavity created by pulsar wind, and other orbital phases without pulsar-wind intervention. The derived amplitude is <0.001 mag, which is about two orders of magnitude smaller than the observed upper limit. Also using the upper limits of the near-infrared variability, we for the first time obtain the upper limit of the dust formation rate resulting from wind-wind collision in O-star gamma-ray binaries., Comment: 7 figures, 2 tables, Accepted to publications in PASJ

Gamma Cas analog sources are a subset of Be stars that emit intense and hard X-ray emission. Two competing ideas for their X-ray production mechanism are (a) the magnetic activities of the Be star and its disk and (b) the accretion from the Be star to an unidentified compact object. Among such sources, Pi Aqr plays a pivotal role as it is one of the only two spectroscopic binaries observed for many orbital cycles and one of the three sources with X-ray brightness sufficient for detailed X-ray spectroscopy. Bjorkman et al. (2002) estimated the secondary mass > 2.0 Mo with optical spectroscopy, which would argue against the compact object being a white dwarf (WD). However, their dynamical mass solution is inconsistent with an evolutionary solution and their radial velocity measurement is inconsistent with later work by Naze et al. (2019). We revisit this issue by adding a new data set with the NuSTAR X-ray observatory and the HIDES echelle spectrograph. We found that the radial velocity amplitude is consistent with Naze et al. (2019), which is only a half of that claimed by Bjorkman et al. (2002). Fixing the radial velocity amplitude of the primary, the secondary mass is estimated as < 1.4 Mo over an assumed range of the primary mass and the inclination angle. We further constrained the inclination angle and the secondary mass independently by fitting the X-ray spectra with a non-magnetic or magnetic accreting WD model under the assumption that the secondary is indeed a WD. Optical and near-infrared observations are compiled for the three gamma-ray binaries hosting Be stars: PSR B1259-63, LSI+61 303, and HESS J0632+057. The emissions from the Be disk are considered to vary according to the changes in its structure, some of which are caused by interactions with the compact object (e.g., tidal forces). Due to the high eccentricity and large orbit of these systems, the interactions -- and, hence the resultant observables -- depend on the orbital phase. To explore such variations, multi-band photometry and linear polarization were monitored for the three considered systems, using two 1.5 m-class telescopes: IRSF at the South African Astronomical Observatory and Kanata at the Higashi-Hiroshima Observatory., Comment: accepted to Universe

We report results from X-ray and optical observations of the Galactic black hole candidate MAXI J1828-249, performed with Suzaku and the Kanata telescope around the X-ray flux peak in the 2013 outburst. The time-averaged X-ray spectrum covering 0.6--168 keV was approximately characterized by a strong multi-color disk blackbody component with an inner disk temperature of ~0.6 keV, and a power-law tail with a photon index of ~2.0. We detected an additional structure at 5-10 keV, which can be modelled neither with X-ray reflection on the disk, nor relativistic broadening of the disk emission. Instead, it was successfully reproduced with a Comptonization of disk photons by thermal electrons with a relatively low temperature (<~10 keV). We infer that the source was in the intermediate state, considering its long-term trend in the hardness intensity diagram, the strength of the spectral power-law tail, and its variability properties. The low-temperature Comptonization component could be produced in a boundary region between the truncated standard disk and the hot inner flow, or a Comptonizing region that somehow developed above the disk surface. The multi-wavelength spectral energy distribution suggests that the optical and UV fluxes were dominated by irradiated outer disk emission., Comment: 18 pages, 9 figures and 3 tables, Accepted for publication in PASJ

We present optical and near-infrared observations of the nearby Type Iax supernova (SN) 2014dt from 14 to 410 days after the maximum light. The velocities of the iron absorption lines in the early phase indicated that SN 2014dt showed slower expansion than the well-observed Type Iax SNe 2002cx, 2005hk and 2012Z. In the late phase, the evolution of the light curve and that of the spectra were considerably slower. The spectral energy distribution kept roughly the same shape after ~100 days, and the bolometric light curve flattened during the same period. These observations suggest the existence of an optically thick component that almost fully trapped the {\gamma}-ray energy from 56 Co decay. These findings are consistent with the predictions of the weak deflagration model, leaving a bound white dwarf remnant after the explosion., Comment: 39 pages, 14 figures, accepted for publication in PASJ

We present optical and near-infrared observations of a low-luminosity Type IIP supernova (SN) 2016bkv from the initial rising phase to the plateau phase. Our observations show that the end of the plateau is extended to $\gtrsim 140$ days since the explosion, indicating that this SN takes one of the longest time to finish the plateau phase. among Type IIP SNe (SNe IIP), including low-luminosity (LL) SNe IIP. The line velocities of various ions at the middle of the plateau phase are as low as 1,000--1,500 km s$^{-1}$, which is the lowest even among LL SNe IIP. These measurements imply that the ejecta mass in SN 2016bkv is larger than that of the well-studied LL IIP SN 2003Z. In the early phase, SN 2016bkv shows a strong bump in the light curve. In addition, the optical spectra in this bump phase exhibit a blue continuum accompanied with a narrow H$\alpha$ emission line. These features indicate an interaction between the SN ejecta and the circumstellar matter (CSM) as in SNe IIn. Assuming the ejecta-CSM interaction scenario, the mass loss rate is estimated to be $\sim 1.7 \times 10^{-2} M_{\odot}$ yr$^{-1}$ within a few years before the SN explosion. This is comparable to or even larger than the largest mass loss rate observed for the Galactic red supergiants ($\sim 10^{-3} M_{\odot}$ yr$^{-1}$ for VY CMa). We suggest that the progenitor star of SN 2016bkv experienced a violent mass loss just before the SN explosion., Comment: 9 pages, 12 figures. Accepted for publication in ApJ

High-dispersion spectroscopic monitoring of HESS J0632+057 has been carried out over four orbital cycles in order to search for orbital modulation, covering the entire orbital phase. We have measured radial velocity of H$\alpha$ emission line with the method introduced by Shafter et al. (1986), which has been successfully applied to some Be stars. The velocity is seen to increase much earlier than expected for the orbital period of 315 days, and much more steeply than expected at around "apastron". The period of the H$\alpha$ modulation is found to be as $308^{+26}_{-23}$ days. We have also analyzed Swift/XRT data from 2009 to 2015 to study the orbital modulation, selecting the data with good statistics ($\geq$ 30 counts). With additional two-year data to the previous works, the orbital period has been updated to $313^{+11}_{-8}$ days, which is consistent with the previous X-ray periods and the spectroscopic one. The past XMM-Newton and Chandra observations prefer the period of 313 days. With the new period, assuming that H$\alpha$ velocities accurately trace the motion of the Be star, we have derived a new set of the orbital parameters. In the new orbit, which is less eccentric ($e \sim 0.6$), two outbursts occur after apastron, and just after periastron. Besides, the column density in bright phase ($4.7^{+0.9}_{-08}\times10^{21}\;\mathrm{cm^{-2}}$) is higher than in faint phase ($2.2\pm0.5\times10^{21}\;\mathrm{cm^{-2}}$). These facts suggest that outbursts occur when the compact object passes nearby/through the Be disk. The mass function implies that mass of the compact object is less than 2.5 $\mathrm{M_{sun}}$ assuming that the mass of the Be star is 13.2--18.2 $\mathrm{M_{sun}}$ (Aragona at al. 2010) unless the inclination is extremely small. The photon index indicates that the spectra becomes softer when the system is bright. These suggest that the compact object is a pulsar., Comment: 15 pages, 7 figures, accepted to PASJ

We present the results of the detailed analysis of an optical imaging survey conducted using the Subaru / Hyper Suprime-Cam (HSC), which aims to identify an optical counterpart to the gravitational wave event GW151226. In half a night, the $i$- and $z$-band imaging survey by HSC covers 63.5deg$^2$ of the error region, which contains about 7\% of the LIGO localization probability, and the same field is observed in three different epochs. The detectable magnitude of the candidates in a differenced image is evaluated as $i \sim 23.2$ mag for the requirement of at least two 5$\sigma$ detections, and 1744 candidates are discovered. Assuming a kilonova as an optical counterpart, we compared the optical properties of the candidates with model predictions. A red and rapidly declining light curve condition enables the discrimination of a kilonova from other transients, and a small number of candidates satisfy this condition. The presence of stellar-like counterparts in the reference frame suggests that the surviving candidates are likely to be flare stars. The fact that most of those candidates are in galactic plane, $|b|<5^{\circ}$, supports this interpretation. We also checked whether the candidates are associated with the nearby GLADE galaxies, which reduces the number of contaminants even with a looser color cut. When a better probability map (with localization accuracy of $\sim50{\rm deg}^2$) is available, kilonova searches of up to approximately $200$ Mpc will become feasible by conducting immediate follow-up observations with an interval of 3--6 days., Comment: 13 pages, 10 figures, Submitted to PASJ on 12 Aug 2017

We present monitoring campaign observations at optical and near-infrared (NIR) wavelengths for a radio-loud active galactic nucleus (AGN) at z=0.840, SDSS~J110006.07+442144.3 (hereafter, J1100+4421), which was identified during a flare phase in late February, 2014. The campaigns consist of three intensive observing runs from the discovery to March, 2015, mostly within the scheme of the OISTER collaboration. Optical-NIR light curves and simultaneous spectral energy distributions (SEDs) are obtained. Our measurements show the strongest brightening in March, 2015. We found that the optical-NIR SEDs of J1100+4421 show an almost steady shape despite the large and rapid intranight variability. This constant SED shape is confirmed to extend to $\sim5~\mu$m in the observed frame using the archival WISE data. Given the lack of absorption lines and the steep power-law spectrum of $\alpha_{\nu}\sim-1.4$, where $f_{\nu}\propto\nu^{\alpha_{\nu}}$, synchrotron radiation by a relativistic jet with no or small contributions from the host galaxy and the accretion disk seems most plausible as an optical-NIR emission mechanism. The steep optical-NIR spectral shape and the large amplitude of variability are consistent with this object being a low $\nu_{\rm{peak}}$ jet-dominated AGN. In addition, sub-arcsec resolution optical imaging data taken with Subaru Hyper Suprime-Cam does not show a clear extended component and the spatial scales are significantly smaller than the large extensions detected at radio wavelengths. The optical spectrum of a possible faint companion galaxy does not show any emission lines at the same redshift and hence a merging hypothesis for this AGN-related activity is not supported by our observations., Comment: 22 pages, 7 figures, 2 tables. V404 Cygni is a well-known black hole binary candidate thought to have relativistic jets. It showed extreme outbursts on June 2015, characterized by a large amplitude and short time variation of flux in the radio, optical, and X-ray bands. Not only disk emission, but also synchrotron radiation from the relativistic jets were suggested by radio observations. However, it is difficult to measure the accurate spectral shape in the optical/near infrared band because there are uncertainties of interstellar extinction. To estimate the extinction value for V404 Cygni, we performed photopolarimetric and spectroscopic observations of V404 Cygni and nearby field stars. Here, we estimate the Galactic extinction using interstellar polarization based on the observation that the origin of the optical polarization is the interstellar medium, and investigate the properties of interstellar polarization around V404~Cygni. We found a good correlation between the color excess and polarization degree in the field stars. We also confirmed that the wavelength dependence of the polarization degree in the highly polarized field stars was similar to that of V404~Cygni. Using the highly polarized field stars, we estimated the color excess and the extinction, $E(B-V)=1.2 \pm 0.2$ and $3.0 < A(V) < 3.6$, respectively. A tendency for a bluer peak of polarization ($\lambda_{\rm max}<5500$ \AA) was commonly seen in the highly polarized field stars, suggesting that the dust grains toward this region are generally smaller than the Galactic average. The corrected spectral energy distribution of V404~Cygni in the near infrared (NIR) and optical bands in our results indicated a spectral break between $2.5 \times 10^{14}$ Hz and $3.7 \times 10^{14}$ Hz, which might be originated in the synchrotron self absorption., Comment: 11 pages, 6 figures, 3 tables. We report the results of optical--infrared follow-up observations of the gravitational wave (GW) event GW151226 detected by the Advanced LIGO in the framework of J-GEM (Japanese collaboration for Gravitational wave ElectroMagnetic follow-up). We performed wide-field optical imaging surveys with Kiso Wide Field Camera (KWFC), Hyper Suprime-Cam (HSC), and MOA-cam3. The KWFC survey started at 2.26 days after the GW event and covered 778 deg$^2$ centered at the high Galactic region of the skymap of GW151226. We started the HSC follow-up observations from 12 days after the event and covered an area of 63.5 deg$^2$ of the highest probability region of the northern sky with the limiting magnitudes of 24.6 and 23.8 for i band and z band, respectively. MOA-cam3 covered 145 deg$^2$ of the skymap with MOA-red filter 2.5 months after the GW alert. Total area covered by the wide-field surveys was 986.5 deg$^2$. The integrated detection probability of all the observed area was $\sim$29%. We also performed galaxy-targeted observations with six optical and near-infrared telescopes from 1.61 days after the event. Total of 238 nearby (<100 Mpc) galaxies were observed with the typical I band limiting magnitude of $\sim$19.5. We detected 13 supernova candidates with the KWFC survey, and 60 extragalactic transients with the HSC survey. Two third of the HSC transients were likely supernovae and the remaining one third were possible active galactic nuclei. Blazars are highly variable active galactic nuclei which emit radiation at all wavelengths from radio to gamma-rays. Polarized radiation from blazars is one key piece of evidence for synchrotron radiation at low energies and it also varies dramatically. The polarization of blazars is of interest for understanding the origin, confinement, and propagation of jets. However, even though numerous measurements have been performed, the mechanisms behind jet creation, composition and variability are still debated. We performed simultaneous gamma-ray and optical photopolarimetry observations of 45 blazars between Jul. 2008 and Dec. 2014 to investigate the mechanisms of variability and search for a basic relation between the several subclasses of blazars. We identify a correlation between the maximum degree of optical linear polarization and the gamma-ray luminosity or the ratio of gamma-ray to optical fluxes. Since the maximum polarization degree depends on the condition of the magnetic field (chaotic or ordered), this result implies a systematic difference in the intrinsic alignment of magnetic fields in pc-scale relativistic jets between different types blazars (FSRQs vs. BL Lacs), and consequently between different types of radio galaxies (FR Is vs. FR IIs)., Comment: 17 pages, 30 figures, 6 tables. In the last 10 years, since its last giant outburst in 2006, regular X-ray outbursts (type I) were detected every periastron passage in the Be X-ray binary EXO 2030+375. Recently, however, it was reported that the source started to show a peculiar behavior: its X-ray flux decreased significantly and type I outbursts were missed in several cases. At the same time, the spin frequency of the neutron star, which had been increasing steadily since the end of the 2006 giant outburst, reached a plateau. Very recent observations indicate that the source is now starting to spin down. These observed phenomena have a striking similarity with those which took place 20 years ago, just before the source displayed a sudden orbital phase shift of the outburst peak (1995). This historical event occurred at the time exactly between the two giant outbursts (1985 and 2006). These phenomena suggest the system to have an underlying periodicity of 10.5 years between orbital phase shifts and/or giant outbursts. The suggested periodicity may reflect some long-period dynamics in the circumstellar disk of the Be star, due, e.g., to the Kozai-Lidov effect. A model generating such a periodic change of the Be disk, namely Kozai-Lidov oscillations in the Be disk, is discussed. From 2013 April to 2014 April, we performed an X-ray and optical simultaneous monitoring of the type 1.5 Seyfert galaxy NGC 3516. It employed Suzaku, and 5 Japanese ground-based telescopes, the Pirka, Kiso Schmidt, Nayuta, MITSuME, and the Kanata telescopes. The Suzaku observations were conducted seven times with various intervals ranging from days, weeks, to months, with an exposure of $\sim50$ ksec each. The optical $B$-band observations not only covered those of Suzaku almost simultaneously, but also followed the source as frequently as possible. As a result, NGC 3516 was found in its faint phase with the 2-10 keV flux of $0.21-2.70 \times 10^{-11}$ erg s$^{-1}$ cm$^{-2}$. The 2-45 keV X-ray spectra were composed of a dominant variable hard power-law continuum with a photon index of $\sim1.7$, and a non-relativistic reflection component with a prominent Fe-K$\alpha$ emission line. Producing the $B$-band light curve by differential image photometry, we found that the $B$-band flux changed by $\sim2.7 \times 10^{-11}$ erg s$^{-1}$ cm$^{-2}$, which is comparable to the X-ray variation, and detected a significant flux correlation between the hard power-law component in X-rays and the $B$-band radiation, for the first time in NGC 3516. By examining their correlation, we found that the X-ray flux preceded that of $B$ band by $2.0^{+0.7}_{-0.6}$ days ($1\sigma$ error). Although this result supports the X-ray reprocessing model, the derived lag is too large to be explained by the standard view which assumes a "lamppost"-type X-ray illuminator located near a standard accretion disk. The occurrence of low-amplitude flux variations in blazars on hourly timescales, commonly known as microvariability, is still a widely debated subject in high-energy astrophysics. Several competing scenarios have been proposed to explain such occurrences, including various jet plasma instabilities leading to the formation of shocks, magnetic reconnection sites, and turbulence. In this letter we present the results of our detailed investigation of a prominent, five-hour-long optical microflare detected during recent WEBT campaign in 2014, March 2-6 targeting the blazar 0716+714. After separating the flaring component from the underlying base emission continuum of the blazar, we find that the microflare is highly polarized, with the polarization degree $\sim (40-60)\%$$\pm (2-10)\%$, and the electric vector position angle $\sim (10 - 20)$deg$\pm (1-8)$deg slightly misaligned with respect to the position angle of the radio jet. The microflare evolution in the $(Q,\,U)$ Stokes parameter space exhibits a looping behavior with a counter-clockwise rotation, meaning polarization degree decreasing with the flux (but higher in the flux decaying phase), and approximately stable polarization angle. The overall very high polarization degree of the flare, its symmetric flux rise and decay profiles, and also its structured evolution in the $Q-U$ plane, all imply that the observed flux variation corresponds to a single emission region characterized by a highly ordered magnetic field. As discussed in the paper, a small-scale but strong shock propagating within the outflow, and compressing a disordered magnetic field component, provides a natural, though not unique, interpretation of our findings., Comment: 9 pages, 4 Figures, ApJ Letter accepted

(abridged) We report on multi-wavelength measurements of Swift J1753.5-0127 in the hard state at L=2.7e36 erg/s (assuming d=3 kpc) in 2014. The radio emission is optically thick synchrotron, presumably from a compact jet. We take advantage of the low extinction and model the near-IR to UV emission with a multi-temperature disk model. Assuming a BH mass of M_BH=5 Msun and a system inclination of 40 deg, the fits imply an inner radius for the disk of Rin/Rg>212 d_3 (5Msun/M_BH). The outer radius is R_out/R_g=90,000 d_3 (5Msun/M_BH), which corresponds to 6.6e10 d_3 cm, consistent with the expected size of the disk. The 0.5-240 keV spectrum measured by Swift/XRT, Suzaku, and NuSTAR is relatively well characterized by a power-law with a photon index of Gamma=1.722+/-0.003, but a significant improvement is seen when a second continuum component is added. Reflection is a possibility, but no iron line is detected, implying a low iron abundance. We are able to fit the entire SED with a multi-temperature disk component, a Comptonization component, and a broken power-law, representing the emission from the compact jet. The broken power-law cannot significantly contribute to the soft X-ray emission, and this may be related to why Swift J1753.5-0127 is an outlier in the radio/X-ray correlation. The broken power-law might dominate above 20 keV, which would constrain the break frequency to be between 2.4e10 Hz and 3.6e12 Hz. Although the fits to the full SED do not include significant thermal emission in the X-ray band, previous observations have consistently seen such a component, and we find that there is evidence at the 3.1-sigma level for a disk-blackbody component with a temperature of 150(+30)(-20) eV and an inner radius of 5-14 R_g. If this component is real, it might imply the presence of an inner accretion disk in addition to the strongly truncated (R_in>212 R_g) disk., Comment: 18 pages, 9 figures, accepted by ApJ

We report on monitoring observations of the TeV gamma-ray binary HESS J0632+057, which were carried out to constrain the interaction between the Be circumstellar disk and the compact object of unknown nature, and provide for the first time high-dispersion (R > 50000) optical spectra in the second half of the orbital cycle, from apastron through periastron. The Halpha, Hbeta, and Hgamma line profiles are found to exhibit remarkable short-term variability for ~1 month after the apastron (phase 0.6--0.7), whereas they show little variation near the periastron. These emission lines show "S-shaped" variations with timescale of ~150 days, which is about twice that reported previously. In contrast to the Balmer lines, no profile variability is seen in any FeII emission line. We estimate the radii of emitting regions of the Halpha, Hbeta, Hgamma, and FeII emission lines to be ~30, 11, 7, and 2 stellar radii (R_*), respectively. The amplitudes of the line profile variations in different lines indicate that the interaction with the compact object affects the Be disk down to, at least, the radius of 7 R_* after the apastron. This fact, together with little profile variability near the periastron, rules out the tidal force as the major cause of disk variability. Although this leaves the pulsar wind as the most likely candidate mechanism for disk variations, understanding the details of the interaction, particularly the mechanism for causing a large-scale disk disturbance after the apastron, remains an open question., Comment: 20 pages, 4 figures, accepted to ApJ Letter

We present our discovery of dramatic variability in SDSS J1100+4421 by the high-cadence transient survey Kiso Supernova Survey (KISS). The source brightened in the optical by at least a factor of three within about half a day. Spectroscopic observations suggest that this object is likely a narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxy (NLS1) at z=0.840, however with unusually strong narrow emission lines. The estimated black hole mass of ~ 10^7 Msun implies bolometric nuclear luminosity close to the Eddington limit. SDSS J1100+4421 is also extremely radio-loud, with a radio loudness parameter of R ~ 4 x 10^2 - 3 x 10^3, which implies the presence of relativistic jets. Rapid and large-amplitude optical variability of the target, reminiscent of that found in a few radio- and gamma-ray loud NLS1s, is therefore produced most likely in a blazar-like core. The 1.4 GHz radio image of the source shows an extended structure with a linear size of about 100 kpc. If SDSS J1100+4421 is a genuine NLS1, as suggested here, this radio structure would then be the largest ever discovered in this type of active galaxies., Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ Letters

The Kiso Supernova Survey (KISS) is a high-cadence optical wide-field supernova (SN) survey. The primary goal of the survey is to catch the very early light of a SN, during the shock breakout phase. Detection of SN shock breakouts combined with multi-band photometry obtained with other facilities would provide detailed physical information on the progenitor stars of SNe. The survey is performed using a 2.2x2.2 deg field-of-view instrument on the 1.05-m Kiso Schmidt telescope, the Kiso Wide Field Camera (KWFC). We take a three-minute exposure in g-band once every hour in our survey, reaching magnitude g~20-21. About 100 nights of telescope time per year have been spent on the survey since April 2012. The number of the shock breakout detections is estimated to be of order of 1 during our 3-year project. We report on the results from Suzaku observations of the Galactic black hole X-ray binary H 1743-322 in the low/hard state during its outburst in 2012 October. We appropriately take into account the effects of dust-scattering to accurately analyze the X-ray spectra. The time-averaged spectra in the 1-200 keV band are dominated by a hard power-law component of a photon index of \approx 1.6 with a high-energy cutoff at \approx 60 keV, which is well described with Comptonization of the disk emission by hot corona. We estimate the inner disk radius from the multi-color disk component, and find that it is 1.3-2.3 times larger than the radius in the high/soft state. This suggests that the standard disk was not extended to the innermost stable circular orbit. A reflection component from the disk is detected with R = \Omega/2\pi \approx 0.6 (\Omega is the solid angle). We also successfully estimate the stable disk component in a way independent of the time-averaged spectral modeling, by analyzing short-term spectral variability on the \sim 1-sec timescale. A weak low-frequency quasi-periodic oscillation (LF QPO) at 0.1-0.2 Hz is detected, whose frequency is found to correlate with the X-ray luminosity and photon index. We present results of optical polarimetric and multi-band photometric observations for gamma-ray loud narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxy 1H 0323+342. This object has been monitored by 1.5 m Kanata telescope since 2012 September but following a gamma-ray flux enhancement detected by Fermi-LAT on MJD 56483 (2013 July 10) dense follow-up was performed by ten 0.5-2.0 m telescopes in Japan over one week. The 2-year R_C-band light curve showed clear brightening corresponding to the gamma-ray flux increase and then decayed gradually. The high state as a whole lasted for ~20 days, during which we clearly detected optical polarization from this object. The polarization degree (PD) of the source increased from 0-1% in quiescence to ~3% at maximum and then declined to the quiescent level, with the duration of the enhancement of less than 10 days. The moderate PD around the peak allowed us to precisely measure the daily polarization angle (PA). As a result, we found that the daily PAs were almost constant and aligned to the jet axis, suggesting that the magnetic field direction at the emission region is transverse to the jet. This implies either a presence of helical/toroidal magnetic field or transverse magnetic field compressed by shock(s). We also found small-amplitude intra-night variability during the 2-hour continuous exposure on a single night. We discuss these findings based on the turbulent multi-zone model recently advocated by Marscher (2014). Optical to ultraviolet (UV) spectrum showed a rising shape in the higher frequency and the UV magnitude measured by Swift/UVOT was steady even during the flaring state, suggesting that thermal emission from accretion disk is dominant in that band., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures, 1 table. We report on optical photopolarimetric results of the radio-loud narrow line Seyfert 1 (RL-NLSy1) galaxy PMN J0948+0022 on 2012 December to 2013 February triggered by flux enhancements in near infrared and gamma-ray bands. Thanks to one-shot polarimetry of the HOWPol installed to the Kanata telescope, we have detected very rapid variability in the polarized-flux light curve on MJD 56281 (2012 December 20). The rise and decay times were about 140 sec and 180 sec, respectively. The polarization degree (PD) reached 36 +/- 3% at the peak of the short-duration pulse, while polarization angle (PA) remained almost constant. In addition, temporal profiles of the total flux and PD showed highly variable but well correlated behavior and discrete correlation function analysis revealed that no significant time lag of more than 10 min was present. The high PD and minute-scale variability in polarized flux provides a clear evidence of synchrotron radiation from a very compact emission region of 10^14 cm size with highly ordered magnetic field. Such micro variability of polarization are also observed in several blazar jets, but its complex relation between total flux and PD are explained by multi-zone model in several blazars. CTA 102, classified as a flat spectrum radio quasar at z=1.037, produced exceptionally bright optical flare in 2012 September. Following Fermi-LAT detection of enhanced gamma-ray activity, we densely monitored this source in the optical and near-infrared bands for the subsequent ten nights using twelve telescopes in Japan and South-Africa. On MJD 56197 (2012 September 27, 4-5 days after the peak of bright gamma-ray flare), polarized flux showed a transient increase, while total flux and polarization angle remained almost constant during the "orphan polarized-flux flare". We also detected an intra-night and prominent flare on MJD 56202. The total and polarized fluxes showed quite similar temporal variations, but PA again remained constant during the flare. Interestingly, the polarization angles during the two flares were significantly different from the jet direction. Emergence of a new emission component with high polarization degree (PD) up to 40% would be responsible for the observed two flares, and such a high PD indicates a presence of highly ordered magnetic field at the emission site. We discuss that the well-ordered magnetic field and even the observed directions of polarization angle which is grossly perpendicular to the jet are reasonably accounted for by transverse shock(s) propagating down the jet., Comment: 20 pages, 3 figures, Accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal Letters

We propose the new scenario for X-ray outbursts in Be/X-ray binaries that normal and giant outbursts are respectively caused by radiatively inefficient accretion flows (RIAFs) and Bondi-Hoyle-Lyttleton (BHL) accretion of the material transferred from the outermost part of a Be disk misaligned with the binary orbital plane. Based on simulated mass-transfer rates from misaligned Be disks, together with simplified accretion flow models, we show that mass-accretion rates estimated from the luminosity of the normal X-ray outbursts are consistent with those obtained with advection-dominated accretion flows, not with the standard, radiative-cooling dominated, accretion. Our RIAF scenario for normal X-ray outbursts resolves problems that have challenged the standard disk picture for these outbursts. When a misaligned Be disk crosses the orbit of the neutron star, e.g., by warping, the neutron star can capture a large amount of mass via BHL-type accretion during the disk transit event. We numerically show that such a process can reproduce the X-ray luminosity of giant X-ray outbursts. In the case of very high Be disk density, the accretion flow associated with the disk transit becomes supercritical, giving rise to the luminosity higher than the Eddington luminosity., Comment: 16 pages, 10 figures, accepted for publication in PASJ
