Search

Imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes (IACTs) are used to observe very high-energy photons from the ground. Gamma rays are indirectly detected through the Cherenkov light emitted by the air showers they induce. The new generation of experiments, in particular the Cherenkov Telescope Array Observatory (CTAO), sets ambitious goals for discoveries of new gamma-ray sources and precise measurements of the already discovered ones. To achieve these goals, both hardware and data analysis must employ cutting-edge techniques. This also applies to the LST-1, the first IACT built for the CTAO, which is currently taking data on the Canary island of La Palma. This paper introduces a new event reconstruction technique for IACT data, aiming to improve the image reconstruction quality and the discrimination between the signal and the background from misidentified hadrons and electrons. The technique models the development of the extensive air shower signal, recorded as a waveform per pixel, seen by CTAO telescopes' cameras. Model parameters are subsequently passed to random forest regressors and classifiers to extract information on the primary particle. The new reconstruction was applied to simulated data and to data from observations of the Crab Nebula performed by the LST-1. The event reconstruction method presented here shows promising performance improvements. The angular and energy resolution, and the sensitivity, are improved by 10 to 20% over most of the energy range. At low energy, improvements reach up to 22%, 47%, and 50%, respectively. Context: There are currently three pulsars firmly detected by imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes (IACTs), two of them reaching TeV energies, challenging models of very-high-energy (VHE) emission in pulsars. More precise observations are needed to better characterize pulsar emission at these energies. The LST-1 is the prototype of the Large-Sized Telescope, that will be part of the Cherenkov Telescope Array Observatory (CTAO). Its improved performance over previous IACTs makes it well suited for studying pulsars. Aims: To study the Crab pulsar emission with the LST-1, improving and complementing the results from other telescopes. These observations can also be used to characterize the potential of the LST-1 to study other pulsars and detect new ones. Methods: We analyzed a total of $\sim$103 hours of gamma-ray observations of the Crab pulsar conducted with the LST-1 in the period from September 2020 to January 2023. The observations were carried out at zenith angles less than 50 degrees. A new analysis of the Fermi-LAT data was also performed, including $\sim$14 years of observations. Results: The Crab pulsar phaseogram, long-term light-curve, and phase-resolved spectra are reconstructed with the LST-1 from 20 GeV to 450 GeV for P1 and up to 700 GeV for P2. The pulsed emission is detected with a significance of 15.2$\sigma$. The two characteristic emission peaks of the Crab pulsar are clearly detected (>10$\sigma$), as well as the so-called bridge emission (5.7$\sigma$). We find that both peaks are well described by power laws, with spectral indices of $\sim$3.44 and $\sim$3.03 respectively. The joint analysis of Fermi-LAT and LST-1 data shows a good agreement between both instruments in the overlapping energy range. Aims. LST-1, the prototype of the Large-Sized Telescope for the upcoming Cherenkov Telescope Array Observatory, is concluding its commissioning in Observatorio del Roque de los Muchachos on the island of La Palma. The proximity of LST-1 (Large-Sized Telescope 1) to the two MAGIC (Major Atmospheric Gamma Imaging Cherenkov) telescopes permits observations of the same gamma-ray events with both systems. Methods. We describe the joint LST-1+MAGIC analysis pipeline and use simultaneous Crab Nebula observations and Monte Carlo simulations to assess the performance of the three-telescope system. The addition of the LST-1 telescope allows the recovery of events in which one of the MAGIC images is too dim to survive analysis quality cuts. Results. Thanks to the resulting increase in the collection area and stronger background rejection, we find a significant improvement in sensitivity, allowing the detection of 30% weaker fluxes in the energy range between 200 GeV and 3 TeV. By comparing the physical properties of pulsars hosted by core-collapsed (CCed) and non-core-collapsed (Non-CCed) globular clusters (GCs), we find that pulsars in CCed GCs rotate significantly slower than their counterparts in Non-CCed GCs. Additionally, radio luminosities at 1.4 GHz in CCed GCs are higher. These findings are consistent with the scenario that dynamical interactions in GCs can interrupt angular momentum transfer processes and surface magnetic field decay during the recycling phase. Our results suggest that such effects in CCed GCs are stronger due to more frequent disruptions of compact binaries. CTA (Cherenkov Telescope Array) is the next generation ground-based observatory for gamma-ray astronomy at very-high energies. The Large-Sized Telescope prototype (LST-1) is located at the Northern site of CTA, on the Canary Island of La Palma. LSTs are designed to provide optimal performance in the lowest part of the energy range covered by CTA, down to $\simeq 20$ GeV. LST-1 started performing astronomical observations in November 2019, during its commissioning phase, and it has been taking data since then. We present the first LST-1 observations of the Crab Nebula, the standard candle of very-high energy gamma-ray astronomy, and use them, together with simulations, to assess the basic performance parameters of the telescope. The data sample consists of around 36 hours of observations at low zenith angles collected between November 2020 and March 2022. LST-1 has reached the expected performance during its commissioning period - only a minor adjustment of the preexisting simulations was needed to match the telescope behavior. The energy threshold at trigger level is estimated to be around 20 GeV, rising to $\simeq 30$ GeV after data analysis. Performance parameters depend strongly on energy, and on the strength of the gamma-ray selection cuts in the analysis: angular resolution ranges from 0.12 to 0.40 degrees, and energy resolution from 15 to 50%. Flux sensitivity is around 1.1% of the Crab Nebula flux above 250 GeV for a 50-h observation (12% for 30 minutes). The spectral energy distribution (in the 0.03 - 30 TeV range) and the light curve obtained for the Crab Nebula agree with previous measurements, considering statistical and systematic uncertainties. We have performed a systematic study of the rotational, orbital and X-ray properties of millisecond pulsars (MSPs) in globular clusters (GCs) and compared their nature with those of the MSPs in the Galactic field (GF). We found that GC MSPs generally rotate slower than their counterparts in the GF. Different from the expectation of a simple recycling scenario, no evidence for the correlation between the orbital period and the rotation period can be found from the MSP binaries in GCs. There is also an indication that the surface magnetic field of GC MSPs are stronger than those in the GF. All these suggest dynamical interactions in GCs can alter the evolution of MSPs/their progenitors which can leave an imprint on their X-ray emission properties. While the MSPs in both GF and GCs have similar distributions of X-ray luminosity and hardness, our sample supports the notion that these two populations follow different relation between the X-ray luminosity and spin-down power. LHAASO J2108+5157 is one of the few known unidentified Ultra-High-Energy (UHE) gamma-ray sources with no Very-High-Energy (VHE) counterpart, recently discovered by the LHAASO collaboration. We observed LHAASO J2108+5157 in the X-ray band with XMM-Newton in 2021 for a total of 3.8 hours and at TeV energies with the Large-Sized Telescope prototype (LST-1), yielding 49 hours of good quality data. In addition, we analyzed 12 years of Fermi-LAT data, to better constrain emission of its High-Energy (HE) counterpart 4FGL J2108.0+5155. We found an excess (3.7 sigma) in the LST-1 data at energies E > 3 TeV. Further analysis in the whole LST-1 energy range assuming a point-like source, resulted in a hint (2.2 sigma) of hard emission which can be described with a single power law with photon index Gamma = 1.6 +- 0.2 between 0.3 - 100 TeV. We did not find any significant extended emission which could be related to a Supernova Remnant (SNR) or Pulsar Wind Nebula (PWN) in the XMM-Newton data, which puts strong constraints on possible synchrotron emission of relativistic electrons. The LST-1 and LHAASO observations can be explained as inverse Compton-dominated leptonic emission of relativistic electrons with a cutoff energy of $100^{+70}_{-30}$ TeV. The low magnetic field in the source imposed by the X-ray upper limits on synchrotron emission is compatible with a hypothesis of a PWN or a TeV halo. The lack of a pulsar in the neighborhood of the UHE source is a challenge to the PWN/TeV-halo scenario. The UHE gamma rays can also be explained as $\pi^0$ decay-dominated hadronic emission due to interaction of relativistic protons with one of the two known molecular clouds in the direction of the source. Fast radio bursts (FRBs) are cosmic sources emitting millisecond-duration radio bursts. Although several hundreds FRBs have been discovered, their physical nature and central engine remain unclear. The variations of Faraday rotation measure and dispersion measure, due to local environment, are crucial clues to understanding their physical nature. The recent observations on the rotation measure of FRB 20201124A show a significant variation on a day time scale. Intriguingly, the oscillation of rotation measure supports that the local contribution can change sign, which indicates the magnetic field reversal along the line of sight. Here we present a physical model that explains observed characteristics of FRB 20201124A and proposes that repeating signal comes from a binary system containing a magnetar and a Be star with a decretion disk. When the magnetar approaches the periastron, the propagation of radio waves through the disk of the Be star naturally leads to the observed varying rotation measure, depolarization, large scattering timescale, and Faraday conversion. The afterglow of GRB 170817A has been detected for more than three years, but the origin of the multi-band afterglow light curves remains under debate. A classical top-hat jet model is faced with difficulties in producing a shallow rise of the afterglow light curves as observed $(F_{\nu} \propto T^{0.8})$. Here we reconsider the model of stratified ejecta with energy profile of $E(>\Gamma \beta)=E_0(\Gamma \beta)^{-k}$ as the origin of the afterglow light curves of the burst, where $\Gamma$ and $\beta$ are the Lorentz factor and speed of the ejecta, respectively. $k$ is the power-law slope of the energy profile. We consider the ejecta are collimated into jets. Two kinds of jet evolutions are investigated, including a lateral-spreading jet and a non-lateral-spreading jet. We fit the multi-band afterglow light curves, including the X-ray data at one thousand days post-burst, and find that both the models of the spreading and non-spreading jets can fit the light curves well, but the observed angular size of the source and the apparent velocity of the flux centroid for the spreading jet model are beyond the observation limits, while the non-spreading jet model meets the observation limits. Some of the best-fit parameters for the non-spreading jet model, such as the number density of the circumburst medium $\sim10^{-2}$ cm$^{-3}$ and the total jet kinetic energy $E \sim 4.8\times 10^{51}$ erg, also appear plausible. The best-fit slope of the jet energy profile is $k \sim 7.1$. Our results suggest that the afterglow of GRB 170817A may arise from the stratified jet and that the lateral spreading of the jet is not significant., Comment: 16 pages, 5 figures, 1 table. Polarization can serve as a probe of the radiation mechanism and magnetic field (MF) configuration in gamma-ray bursts (GRBs). In the case of constant MF, the synchrotron polarization in the prompt phase of GRBs has been widely studied. In this paper, we consider the case of the decaying MF. We calculate the time-averaged and instantaneous synchrotron polarizations in a pulse for different viewing angles and for the large-scale decaying MF model, which can explain the so-called Band spectrum. We find that the on-axis time-averaged polarization degree (PD) in the energy band of 50-500 keV for the decaying large-scale MF model ($\sim 0.6$ for typical parameters) is higher than that in the constant MF model ($\sim 0.5$). An interesting result is the instantaneous PD in the off-axis case will experience a turnover, i.e., the PD will evolve from a positive value to a negative one. This suggests the polarization angle (PA) change by an angle of $90^\circ$. Such a result is roughly consistent with the discovery of the PA evolution within a pulse in some bursts, such as GRB 170114A and GRB 160821A. We report the results of searching pulsar-like candidates from the unidentified objects in the $3^{\rm rd}$ Catalog of Hard Fermi-LAT sources (3FHL). Using a machine-learning based classification scheme with a nominal accuracy of $\sim98\%$, we have selected 27 pulsar-like objects from 200 unidentified 3FHL sources for an identification campaign. Using archival data, X-ray sources are found within the $\gamma-$ray error ellipses of 10 3FHL pulsar-like candidates. Within the error circles of the much better constrained X-ray positions, we have also searched for the optical/infrared counterparts and examined their spectral energy distributions. Among our short-listed candidates, the most secure identification is the association of 3FHL J1823.3-1339 and its X-ray counterpart with the globular cluster Mercer 5. The $\gamma-$rays from the source can be contributed by a population of millisecond pulsars residing in the cluster. This makes Mercer 5 as one of the slowly growing hard $\gamma-$ray population of globular clusters with emission $>10$ GeV. Very recently, another candidate picked by our classification scheme, 3FHL J1405.1-6118, has been identified as a new $\gamma-$ray binary with an orbital period of $13.7$ days. Our X-ray analysis with a short Chandra observation has found a possible periodic signal candidate of $\sim1.4$ hrs and a putative extended X-ray tail of $\sim20$ arcsec long. Spectral energy distribution of its optical/infrared counterpart conforms with a blackbody of $T_{\rm bb}\sim40000$ K and $R_{\rm bb}\sim12R_{\odot}$ at a distance of 7.7 kpc. PSR J2021+4026 is a radio-quiet gamma-ray pulsar and the first pulsar that shows state change of the gamma-ray emission and spin-down rate. The state change of PSR J2021+4026 was first observed at 2011 October, at which the pulsar changes the state from high gamma-ray flux/low spin-down rate state to low gamma-ray flux/high spin-down rate st\ ate. In December 2014, PSR J2021+4026 recovered the state before the 2011 state change over a timescale of a few months. We report that the long term evolution of the gamma-ray flux and timing behavior suggests that PSR J2021+4026 changed the state near 2018 February 1st and entered a new low gamma-ray flux/high spin-down rate state. At the 2018 state change, the averaged flux dropped from $(1.29\pm 0.01)\times 10^{-6} {\rm cts~cm^{-2}s^{-1}}$ to $(1.12\pm 0.01)\times 10^{-6} {\rm cts~cm^{-2}s^{-1\ }}$, which has the similar behavior to the case of 2011 event. The spin-down rate has increased by $\sim 3\%$ in the new state since the 2018 state change. The shapes of pulse profile and spectrum in GeV bands also changed at the 2018 event, and they are consistent with behavior at the 2011 state change. Our results probably suggest that PSR J2021+4026 is switching between different states with a timescale of several years, like some radio pulsars (e.g. PSR~B1828-11). Four significant events of rapid $^{14}$C increase have taken place within the past several thousand years. The physical origin of these rapid increases is still a mystery but must be associated with extremely energetic cosmic processes. Pulsars are highly magnetized neutron stars that emit a beam of electromagnetic radiations. Any sudden release of the energy stored in the magnetic multipole field will trigger outbursts similar to the giant flares of magnetars. Here we show that the relativistic outflow from the outbursts of a nearby pulsar interacting with the interstellar medium generates a shock, which accelerates electrons to trillions of electron volts. The high-energy photons from synchrotron emission of the shock interact with Earth's atmosphere, producing the cosmogenic nuclide $^{14}$C, which can cause the rapid $^{14}$C increases discovered in tree rings. These same relativistic electrons can account for a significant fraction of the cosmic electron spectrum in the trillion electron volts energy range, as observed by space-borne satellites. Multi-messenger astronomy combining Gravitational Wave (GW) and Electromagnetic Wave (EM) observation brings huge impact on physics, astrophysics and cosmology. However, the majority of sources to be detected with currently running ground-based GW observatories are binary black hole (BBH) mergers, which are expected disappointedly to have no EM counterparts. In this letter, we propose that if the BBH merger happens in a gaseous disk around a supermassive black hole, the merger can be accompanied by a transient radio flare alike a fast radio burst (FRB). We argue that the total mass and the effective spin derived from GW detection can be used to distinguish such a source from other channels of BBH mergers. If the prediction is confirmed with future observation, multi-messenger astronomy can be brought to a distance which is one order of magnitude farther than present. PSR B1259-63/LS 2883 is an elliptical pulsar/Be star binary and emits broadband emissions from radio to TeV $\gamma$-rays. The massive star possesses an equatorial disc, which is inclined with the orbital plane of the pulsar. The non-thermal emission from the system is believed to be produced by the pulsar wind shock and the double-peak profiles in the X-ray and TeV $\gamma$-ray light curves are related to the phases of the pulsar passing through the disc region of the star. In this paper, we investigate the interactions between the pulsar wind and stellar outflows, especially with the presence of the disc, and present a multi-wavelength modelling of the emission from this system. We show that the double-peak profiles of X-ray and TeV $\gamma$-ray light curves are caused by the enhancements of the magnetic field and the soft photons at the shock during the disc passages. As the pulsar is passing through the equatorial disc, the additional pressure of the disc pushes the shock surface closer to the pulsar, which causes the enhancement of magnetic field in the shock, and thus increases the synchrotron luminosity. The TeV $\gamma$-rays due to the inverse-Compton (IC) scattering of shocked electrons with seed photons from the star is expected to peak around periastron which is inconsistent with observations. However, the shock heating of the stellar disc could provide additional seed photons for IC scattering during the disc passages, and thus produces the double-peak profiles as observed in the TeV $\gamma$-ray light curve. We study linear polarization of optical emission from white dwarf (WD) binary system AR~Scorpii. The optical emission from this binary is modulating with the beat frequency of the system, and it is highly polarized, with the degree of the polarization reaching $\sim 40$\%. The angle of the polarization monotonically increases with the spin phase, and the total swing angle can reach $360^{\circ}$ over one spin phase. It is also observed that the morphology of the pulse profile and the degree of linear polarization evolve with the orbital phase. These polarization properties can constrain the scenario for nonthermal emission from AR Scorpii. In this paper, we study the polarization properties predicted by the emission model, in which (i) the pulsed optical emission is produced by the synchrotron emission from relativistic electrons trapped by magnetic field lines of the WD and (ii) the emission is mainly produced at magnetic mirror points of the electron motion. We find that this model can reproduce the large swing of the polarization angle, provided that the distribution of the initial pitch angle of the electrons that are leaving the M-type star is biased to a smaller angle rather than a uniform distribution. The observed direction of the swing suggests that the Earth viewing angle is less than $90^{\circ}$ measured from the WD spin axis. The current model prefers an Earth viewing angle of $50^{\circ}-60^{\circ}$ and a magnetic inclination angle of $50^{\circ}-60^{\circ}$ (or $120^{\circ}-130^{\circ}$). We propose a new model of Fast Radio Bursts (FRBs) based on stellar mass black hole-massive star binaries. We argue that the inhomogeneity of the circumstellar materials or/and the time varying wind activities of the stellar companion will cause the black hole to accrete at a transient super-Eddington rate. The collision among the clumpy ejecta in the resulted jet could trigger plasma instability. As a result, the plasma in the jet will emit coherent curvature radiation. When the jet cone aims toward the observer, the apparent luminosity can be $10^{41}-10^{42}$\,erg/s. The duration of the resulted flare is $\sim$ millisecond. The high event rate of the observed non-repeating FRBs can be explained. A similar scenario in the vicinity of a supermassive black hole can be used to explain the interval distribution of the repeating source FRB121102 qualitatively., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS

We analyze the processes governing cosmic-ray (CR) penetration into molecular clouds and the resulting generation of gamma-ray emission. The density of CRs inside a cloud is depleted at lower energies due to the self-excited MHD turbulence. The depletion depends on the effective gas column density ("size") of the cloud. We consider two different environments where the depletion effect is expected to be observed. For the Central Molecular Zone, the expected range of CR energy depletion is $E\lesssim 10$ GeV, leading to the depletion of gamma-ray flux below $E_\gamma\approx 2$ GeV. This effect can be important for the interpretation of the GeV gamma-ray excess in the Galactic Center, which has been revealed from the standard model of CR propagation (assuming the CR spectrum inside a cloud to be equal to the interstellar spectrum). Furthermore, recent observations of some local molecular clouds suggest the depletion of the gamma-ray emission, indicating possible self-modulation of the penetrating low-energy CRs., Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

We have conducted a systematic survey for the X-ray properties of millisecond pulsars (MSPs). Currently, there are 47 MSPs with confirmed X-ray detections. We have also placed the upper limits for the X-ray emission from the other 36 MSPs by using the archival data. We have normalized their X-ray luminosities $L_{x}$ and their effective photon indices $\Gamma$ into a homogeneous data set, which enable us to carry out a detailed statistical analysis. Based on our censored sample, we report a relation of $L_{x}\simeq10^{31.05}\left(\dot{E}/10^{35}\right)^{1.31}$ erg/s (2-10 keV) for the MSPs. The inferred X-ray conversion efficiency is found to be lower than previously reported estimate that could be affected by selection bias. $L_{x}$ also correlates/anti-correlates with the magnetic field strength at the light cylinder $B_{LC}$/characteristic age $\tau$. On the other hand, there is no correlation between $L_{x}$ and their surface magnetic field strength $B_{s}$. We have further divided the sample into four classes: (i) black-widows, (ii) redbacks, (iii) isolated MSPs and (iv) other MSP binaries, and compare the properties among them. We noted that while the rotational parameters and the orbital periods of redbacks and black-widow are similar, $L_{x}$ of redbacks are significantly higher than those of black-widows in the 2-10 keV band. Also the $\Gamma$ of redbacks are apparently smaller than those of black-widows, which indicates the X-ray emission of redbacks are harder than that of black-widows. This can be explained by the different contribution of intrabinary shocks in the X-ray emission of these two classes., Comment: 19 pages, 12 figures, 4 tables, accepted for publication in ApJ

We present a multi-wavelength study of the unassociated Fermi-LAT source, 3FGL J0954.8-3948, which is likely the gamma-ray counterpart of a 9.3-hour binary in the field. With more than 9 years of Pass 8 LAT data, we updated the gamma-ray spectral properties and the LAT localization of the gamma-ray source. While the binary lies outside the cataloged 95% error ellipse, the optimized LAT ellipse is 0.1 degrees closer and encloses the binary. The system is likely spectrally hard in X-rays (photon index ~ 1.4) with orbital modulations detected in optical, UV, and possibly X-rays. A steep spectrum radio counterpart (spectral index ~ -1.6) is also found in the TIFR GMRT Sky Survey (TGSS), implying that it is a pulsar system. We obtained a series of SOAR and Gemini spectroscopic observations in 2017/2018, which show a low-mass secondary orbiting in a close circular orbit with K2 = 272 km/s under strong irradiation by the primary compact object. All the observations as well as the modelling of the X/gamma-ray high-energy emission suggest that 3FGL J0954.8-3948 is a redback millisecond pulsar in a rotation-powered state., Comment: 10 pages, including 5 figures and 3 tables. Molecular gas in Arches cloud located near the Arches cluster is one of the emitters of K-$\alpha$ line of neutral iron and X-ray continuum in the Galactic center (GC). Similarly to the cloud Sgr B2, another well-known emitter of the iron line in the GC, the Arches cloud demonstrates temporal decline of the X-ray emission. The most natural origin of this emission is irradiation of primary photons of an X-ray flare from a distant source, most likely Sgr A*. However, recent observations of the Arches cloud discovered variations of equivalent width of the 6.4 keV iron line, which indicated that the X-ray emission from the cloud is a combination of two components with different origin and different equivalent width, one of which is time-variable, while the other is stationary during the period of observations. We considered two different scenarios: a) this emission is formed by reflection from two clouds, which are at some distance from each other, when they are irradiated by two different flares; and b) the other scenario assumes a combination of X-ray fluxes produced in the same cloud by reflection of primary photons and by subrelativistic cosmic rays. We present restrictions for both model and conditions at which these scenarios can be realized. Although none of the models can be completely ruled out, we find that the X-ray reflection model requires less assumption and therefore is the most viable., Comment: 15 pages, 3 figures. accepted for publication in ApJ

Among the four black hole binary merger events detected by LIGO, six progenitor black holes have masses greater than 20\,$M_\odot$. The existence of such massive BHs calls for extreme metal-poor stars as the progenitors. An alternative possibility that a pair of stellar mass black holes each with mass $\sim7\,M_\odot$ increases to $>20\,M_\odot$ via accretion from a disk surrounding a super massive black hole in an active galactic nucleus is considered. The growth of mass of the binary and the transfer of orbital angular momentum to the disk accelerates the merger. Based on the recent numerical work of Tang et al. (2017), it is found that, in the disk of a low mass AGN with mass $\sim10^6\,M_\odot$ and Eddington ratio $>0.01$, the mass of an individual BH in the binary can grow to $>20\,M_\odot$ before coalescence provided that accretion takes place at a rate more than 10 times the Eddington value. The mechanism predicts a new class of gravitational wave sources involving the merger of two extreme Kerr black holes associated with active galactic nuclei and a possible electromagnetic wave counterpart., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJL

Type Ic supernovae (SNe) can be classified as: normal SNe Ic, type Ic super-luminous SNe (SLSNe Ic), X-ray flash (XRF) connected SNe, broad-line SNe Ic (SN Ic-BL), and gamma-ray burst (GRB) connected SNe. Here we suggest an inner connection for all kinds of SNe Ic based on a pair of jets being successfully launched: a normal SN Ic is a normal core collapsar without jets launched; a GRB associated SN Ic is a core collapsar with relativistic jets launched and successfully breaking out the envelope of the progenitor; an XRF associated SN Ic is a core collapsar with jets launched but can only develop a relativistic shock breakout; an SN Ic-BL is an off-axis GRB or XRF associated supernova; and an SLSN Ic is close to the XRF-SN Ic but the shock breakout is not relativistic and most of the jet energy is deposited into the supernova component. Based on the luminosity-distance diagram, we derived the luminosity function of all different types of SNe Ic as a whole. We also show that the normal SNe Ic and GRB connected SNe Ic have similar accumulative distributions.

We present the Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory (Swift), Fermi Large Area Telescope (Fermi-LAT), and Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (VLA) observations of the gamma-ray binary PSR J2032+4127/MT91 213, of which the periastron passage has just occurred in November 2017. In the Swift X-ray light curve, the flux was steadily increasing before mid-October 2017, however, a sharp X-ray dip on a weekly time-scale is seen during the periastron passage, followed by a post-periastron X-ray flare lasting for ~20 days. We suggest that the X-ray dip is caused by (i) an increase of the magnetization parameter at the shock, and (ii) the suppression due to the Doppler boosting effect. The 20-day post-periastron flare could be a consequence of the Be stellar disk passage by the pulsar. An orbital GeV modulation is also expected in our model, however, no significant variability is seen in the Fermi-LAT light curve. We suspect that the GeV emission resulted from the interaction between the binary's members is hidden behind the bright magnetospheric emission of the pulsar. Pulsar gating technique would be useful to remove the magnetospheric emission and recover the predicted GeV modulation, if an accurate radio timing solution over the periastron passage is provided in the future., Comment: 6 pages, including 2 figures. The $\gamma$-ray pulsar binary system PSR B1259-63 flares in GeV after each periastron. The origin of those flares is still under debate. Recently, [2017ApJ...844..114Y] proposed a mechanism that might explain the GeV flares. In that model, a transient accretion disc is expected to be formed from the matter which was gravity-captured by the neutron star from the main sequence companion's circumstellar disc. The transient accretion disc exerts a spin down torque on the neutron star (propeller effect), which might be traceable via pulsar timing observation of PSR B1259-63. In this paper, we phenomenologically consider the propeller effect with a parameter $\chi$, which describes the coupling between the disc matter and the neutron star. Comparing the expected timing residuals against the recent observation in [2014MNRAS.437.3255S], we conclude that the angular momentum transfer is very weak (with the coupling parameter $\chi\le10^{-4}$)., Comment: 5 Pages, 7 Figures,accepted for publication in MNRAS

A flux of cosmic rays (CRs) propagating through a diffuse ionized gas can excite MHD waves, thus generating magnetic disturbances. We propose a generic model of CR penetration into molecular clouds through their diffuse envelopes, and identify the leading physical processes controlling their transport on the way from a highly ionized interstellar medium to a dense interior of the cloud. The model allows us to describe a transition between a free streaming of CRs and their diffusive propagation, determined by the scattering on the self-generated disturbances. A self consistent set of equations, governing the diffusive transport regime in an envelope and the MHD turbulence generated by the modulated CR flux, is essentially characterized by two dimensionless numbers. We demonstrate a remarkable mutual complementarity of different mechanisms leading to the onset of the diffusive regime, which results in a universal energy spectrum of the modulated CRs. In conclusion, we briefly discuss implications of our results for several fundamental astrophysical problems, such as the spatial distribution of CRs in the Galaxy as well as the ionization, heating, and chemistry in dense molecular clouds., Comment: The manuscript is accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal

We report the analysis result of UV/X-ray emission from AR~Scorpii, which is an intermediate polar (IP) composed of a magnetic white dwarf and a M-type star, with the XMM-Newton data. The X-ray/UV emission clearly shows a large variation over the orbit, and their intensity maximum (or minimum) is located at the superior conjunction (or inferior conjunction) of the M-type star orbit. The hardness ratio of the X-ray emission shows a small variation over the orbital phase, and shows no indication of the absorption by an accretion column. These properties are naturally explained by the emission from the M-type star surface rather than from the accretion column on the WD's star similar to the usual IPs. Beside, the observed X-ray emission also modulates with WD's spin with a pulse fraction of $\sim 14\%$. The peak position is aligned in the optical/UV/X-ray band. This supports the hypothesis that the electrons in AR~Scorpii are accelerated to a relativistic speed, and emit non-thermal photons via the synchrotron radiation. In the X-ray bands, the evidence of the power-law spectrum is found in the pulsed component, although the observed emission is dominated by the optically thin thermal plasma emissions with several different temperatures. It is considered that the magnetic dissipation/reconnection process on the M-type star surface heats up the plasma to a temperature of several keV, and also accelerates the electrons to the relativistic speed. The relativistic electrons are trapped in the WD's closed magnetic field lines by the magnetic mirror effect. AR~Scorpii is an intermediate polar system composed of a magnetic white dwarf (WD) and an M-type star, and shows non-thermal, pulsed, and highly linearly polarized emission. The radio/optical emission modulates with the WD's spin and show the double peak structure in the light curves. In this paper, we discuss a possible scenario for the radiation mechanism of AR~Scorpii. The magnetic interaction on the surface of the companion star produces an outflow from the companion star, the heating of the companion star surface, and the acceleration of electrons to a relativistic energy. The accelerated electrons, whose typical Lorentz factor is $\sim 50-100$, from the companion star move along the magnetic field lines toward the WD surface. The electrons injected with the pitch angle of $\sin\theta_{p,0}>0.05$ are subject to the magnetic mirror effect and are trapped in the closed magnetic field line region.We find that the emission from the first magnetic mirror points mainly contributes to the observed pulsed emission and the formation of the double-peak structure in the light curve. For the inclined rotator, the pulse peak in the calculated light curve shifts the position in the spin phase, and a Fourier analysis exhibits a beat frequency feature, which are consistent with the optical/UV observations. The pulse profile also evolves with the orbital phase owing to the effect of the viewing geometry. The model also interprets the global features of the observed spectral energy distribution in radio to X-ray energy bands. Cosmic rays interact with the Earth's atmosphere to produce $^{14}$C, which can be absorbed by trees. Therefore, rapid increases of $^{14}$C in tree rings can be used to probe previous cosmic-ray events. By this method, three $^{14}$C rapidly increasing events have been found. Plausible causes of these events include large solar proton events, supernovae or short gamma-ray bursts. However, due to the lack of measurements of $^{14}$C by year, the occurrence frequency of such $^{14}$C rapidly increasing events is poorly known. In addition, rapid increases may be hidden in the IntCal13 data with five-year resolution. Here we report the result of $^{14}$C measurements using an ancient buried tree during the period between BC 3388 and 3358. We find a rapid increase of about 9\textperthousand~ in the $^{14}$C content from BC 3372 to BC 3371. The velocity and density distribution of $e^\pm$ in the pulsar wind are crucial distinction among magnetosphere models, and contains key parameters determining the high energy emission of pulsar binaries. In this work, a direct method is proposed, which might probe the properties of the wind from one pulsar in a double-pulsar binary. When the radio signals from the first-formed pulsar travel through the relativistic $e^\pm$ flow in the pulsar wind from the younger companion, the components of different radio frequencies will be dispersed. It will introduce an additional frequency-dependent time-of-arrival delay of pulses, which is function of the orbital phase. In this paper, we formulate the above-mentioned dispersive delay with the properties of the pulsar wind. As examples, we apply the formula to the double pulsar system PSR J0737-3039A/B and the pulsar-neutron star binary PSR B1913+16. For PSR J0737-3039A/B, the time delay in 300\,MHz is $\lesssim10\mu$s near the superior-conjunction, under the optimal pulsar wind parameters, which is $\sim$ half of the current timing accuracy. For PSR B1913+16, with the assumption that the neutron star companion has a typical spin down luminosity of $10^{33}$\,ergs/s, the time delay is as large as $10\sim20\mu$s in 300\,MHz. The best timing precision of this pulsar is $\sim5\mu$s in 1400\,MHz. Therefore, it is possible that we can find this signal in archival data. Otherwise, we can set an upper-limit on the spin down luminosity. A recent study by Posselt et al. (2017) reported the deepest X-ray investigation of the Geminga pulsar wind nebula (PWN) by using \emph{Chandra X-ray Observatory}. In comparison with previous studies of this system, a number of new findings have been reported and we found these suggest the possible variabilities in various components of this PWN. This motivates us to carry out a dedicated search for the morphological and spectral variations of this complex nebula. We have discovered variabilities on timescales from a few days to a few months from different components of the nebula. The fastest change occurred in the circumstellar environment at a rate of 80 per cent of the speed of light. One of the most spectacular results is the wiggling of a half light-year long tail as an extension of the jet, which is significantly bent by the ram pressure. The jet wiggling occurred at a rate of about 20 per cent of the speed of light. This twisted structure can possibly be a result of a propagating torsional Alf\`{v}en wave. HESS J0632+057 is the only gamma-ray binary that has been detected at TeV energies, but not at GeV energies yet. Based on nearly nine years of Fermi Large Area Telescope (LAT) Pass 8 data, we report here on a deep search for the gamma-ray emission from HESS J0632+057 in the 0.1-300 GeV energy range. We find a previously unknown gamma-ray source, Fermi J0632.6+0548, spatially coincident with HESS J0632+057. The measured flux of Fermi J0632.6+0548 is consistent with the previous flux upper limit on HESS J0632+057 and shows variability that can be related to the HESS J0632+057 orbital phase. We propose that Fermi J0632.6+0548 is the GeV counterpart of HESS J0632+057. Considering the Very High Energy (VHE) spectrum of HESS J0632+057, a possible spectral turnover above 10 GeV may exist in Fermi J0632.6+0548, as appears to be common in other established gamma-ray binaries., Comment: 17 pages, 4 figures, 1 table; Accepted for publication in ApJ

PSR B1259-63/LS2883 is a binary system composed of a pulsar and a Be star. The Be star has an equatorial circumstellar disk (CD). The {\it Fermi} satellite discovered unexpected gamma-ray flares around 30 days after the last two periastron passages. The origin of the flares remain puzzling. In this work, we explore the possibility that, the GeV flares are consequences of inverse Compton-scattering of soft photons by the pulsar wind. The soft photons are from an accretion disk around the pulsar, which is composed by the matter from CD captured by the pulsar's gravity at disk-crossing before the periastron. At the other disk-crossing after the periastron, the density of the CD is not high enough so that accretion is prevented by the pulsar wind shock. A glitch of a pulsar is known as a sudden increase in the spin frequency and spin-down rate (frequency time derivative), and it can be caused by a sudden rel\ ease of the stress built up in the solid crust of the star or pinned vortices in the superfluid interior. PSR J2021+4026 is the first pulsar that shows a significant change in the gamma-ray flux and pulse profile at the glitch that occurred around 2011 October 16. We report the results of timing and spectral analysis of PSR~J2021+4026 using $\sim$ 8~yr Fermi-LAT data. We find that the pulsar stayed at a high spin-down rate ($\sim 4\%$ higher than the pre-glitch value) and a low gamma-ray state ($\sim 18\%$ lower) for about 3~yr after the glitch. Around 2014 December, the spin-down rate and gamma-ray flux gradually returned to pre-glitch values within a time scale of a few months. The phase-resolved spectra and pulse profiles after the relaxation are also consistent with those before the glitch. The observed long-term evolution of the spin-down rate and the gamma-ray flux indicates that the glitch triggered a mode change in the global magnetosphere. We speculate that the glitch changed the local magnetic field structure around the polar cap and/or the inclination angle of the dipole axis, leading to a change in the electric current circulating in the magnetosphere., Comment: 23 pages, 6 figures. PSR J2032+4127 is a radio-loud gamma-ray-emitting pulsar; it is orbiting around a high-mass Be type star with a very long orbital period of 25-50years, and is approaching periastron, which will occur in late 2017/early 2018. This system comprises with a young pulsar and a Be type star, which is similar to the so-called gamma-ray binary PSR~B1259-63/LS2883. It is expected therefore that PSR J2032+4127 shows an enhancement of high-energy emission caused by the interaction between the pulsar wind and Be wind/disk around periastron. Ho et al. recently reported a rapid increase in the X-ray flux from this system. In this paper, we also confirm a rapid increase in the X-ray flux along the orbit, while the GeV flux shows no significant change. We discuss the high-energy emissions from the shock caused by the pulsar wind and stellar wind interaction and examine the properties of the pulsar wind in this binary system. We argue that the rate of increase of the X-ray flux observed by Swift indicates (1) a variation of the momentum ratio of the two-wind interaction region along the orbit, or (2) an evolution of the magnetization parameter of the pulsar wind with the radial distance from the pulsar. We also discuss the pulsar wind/Be disk interaction at the periastron passage, and propose the possibility of formation of an accretion disk around the pulsar. The supernova remnant Kes 73 and/or the magnetar 1E 1841-045 at its center can deposit a large amount of energy to the surroundings and is potentially responsible for particle acceleration. Using the data taken with the Fermi Large Area Telescope (LAT), we confirmed the presence of an extended source whose centroid position is highly consistent with this magnetar/supernova-remnant pair. Its emission is intense from 100 MeV to $>$100 GeV. Its LAT spectrum can be decoupled into two components which are respectively governed by two different mechanisms. According to the young age of this system, the magnetar is seemingly a necessary and sufficient source for the downward-curved spectrum below 10 GeV, as the observed $<$10 GeV flux is too high for the supernova remnant to account for. On the other hand, the supernova remnant is reasonably responsible for the hard spectrum above 10 GeV. Further studies of this region in the TeV regime is required, so that we can perform physically meaningful comparisons of the $>$10 GeV spectrum and the TeV spectrum., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ

We give a short review of processes of stochastic acceleration in the Galaxy. We discuss: how to estimate correctly the number of accelerated particles, and at which condition the stochastic mechanism is able to generate power-law nonthermal spectra. We present an analysis of stochastic acceleration in the Galactic halo and discuss whether this mechanism can be responsible for production of high energy electrons there, which emit gamma-ray and microwave emission from the giant Fermi bubbles. We study a possible connection between different non-thermal emissions from the inner few parsecs of the Galaxy. We analyze the origin of the gamma-ray source 2FGL J1745.6-2858 (or 3FGL J1745.6-2859c) in the Galactic Center and the diffuse hard X-ray component recently found by NuSTAR, as well as the radio emission and processes of hydrogen ionization from this area. We assume that a source in the GC injected energetic particles with power-law spectrum into the surrounding medium in the past or continues to inject until now. The energetic particles may be protons, electrons or a combination of both. These particles diffuse to the surrounding medium and interact with gas, magnetic field and background photons to produce non-thermal emissions. We study the spectral and spatial features of the hard X-ray emission and gamma-ray emission by the particles from the central source. Our goal is to examine whether the hard X-ray and gamma-ray emissions have a common origin. Our estimations show that in the case of pure hadronic models the expected flux of hard X-ray emission is too low. Despite protons can produce a non-zero contribution in gamma-ray emission, it is unlikely that they and their secondary electrons can make a significant contribution in hard X-ray flux. In the case of pure leptonic models it is possible to reproduce both X-ray and gamma-ray emissions for both transient and continuous supply models. However, in the case of continuous supply model the ionization rate of molecular hydrogen may significantly exceed the observed value., Comment: 22 pages, 10 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

We discuss X-ray and gamma-ray emissions from Crab-like pulsars, PSRs~J0537-6910 and~J0540-6919, in Large Magellanic Cloud. Fermi-LAT observations have resolved the gamma-ray emissions from these two pulsars and found the pulsed emissions from PSR~J0540-6919. The total pulsed radiation in the X-ray/gamma-ray energy bands of PSR~J0540-6919 is observed with the efficiency $\eta_{J0540}\sim 0.06$ (in 4$\pi$ sr), which is about a factor of ten larger than $\eta_{Crab}\sim 0.006$ of the Crab pulsar. Although PSR~J0537-6910 has the highest spin-down power among currently known pulsars, the efficiency of the observed X-ray emissions is about two orders of magnitude smaller than that of PSR~J0540-6919. This paper mainly discusses what causes the difference in the radiation efficiencies of these three energetic Crab-like pulsars. We discuss electron/positron acceleration and high-energy emission processes within the outer gap model. By solving the outer gap structure with the dipole magnetic field, we show that the radiation efficiency decreases as the inclination angle between the magnetic axis and the rotation axis increases. To explain the difference in the pulse profile and in the radiation efficiency, our model suggests that PSR~J0540-6919 has an inclination angle much smaller than the that of Crab pulsar (here we assume the inclination angles of both pulsars are $\alpha<90^{\circ}$). On the other hand, we speculate that the difference in the radiation efficiencies between PSRs~J0537-6910 and J0549-6919 is mainly caused by the difference in the Earth viewing angle, and that we see PSR~J0537-6910 with an Earth viewing angle $\zeta>>90^{\circ}$ (or $<<90^{\circ}$) measured from the spin axis, while we see PSR~J0540-6919 with $\zeta\sim 90^{\circ}$., Comment: 23 pages, 7 figures, ApJ in press

By comparing the properties of non-recycled radio-loud $\gamma-$ray pulsars and radio-quiet $\gamma-$ray pulsars, we have searched for the differences between these two populations. We found that the $\gamma-$ray spectral curvature of radio-quiet pulsars can be larger than that of radio-loud pulsars. Based on the full sample of non-recycled $\gamma-$ray pulsars, their distributions of the magnetic field strength at the light cylinder are also found to be different. We notice that this might be resulted from the observational bias. In re-examining the previously reported difference of $\gamma-$ray-to-X-ray flux ratios, we found the significance can be hampered by their statistical uncertainties. The region around SGR 1806-20 and its host stellar cluster Cl* 1806-20 is a potentially important site of particle acceleration. The soft $\gamma-$ray repeater and Cl* 1806-20, which also contains several very massive stars including a luminous blue variable hypergiant LBV 1806-20, are capable of depositing a large amount of energy to the surroundings. Using the data taken with the \emph{Fermi} Large Area Telescope (LAT), we identified an extended LAT source to the south-west of Cl* 1806-20. The centroid of the 1-50~GeV emission is consistent with that of HESS J1808-204 (until now unidentified). The LAT spectrum is best-fit by a broken power-law with the break energy $E_\mathrm{b}=297\pm15$ MeV. The index above $E_\mathrm{b}$ is $2.60\pm0.04$, and is consistent with the flux and spectral index above 100 GeV for HESS J1808-204, suggesting an association between the two sources. Meanwhile, the interacting supernova remnant SNR G9.7-0.0 is also a potential contributor to the LAT flux. A tentative flux enhancement at the MeV band during a 45-day interval (2011 Jan 21 - 2011 Mar 7) is also reported. Pulsars are rapidly spinning and highly magnetized neutron stars, with highly stable rotational period and gradual spin-down over a long timescale due to the loss of radiation. Glitches refer to the events that suddenly increase the rotational speed of a pulsar. The exact causes of glitches and the resulting processes are not fully understood. It is generally believed that couplings between the normal matter and the superfluid components, and the starquakes, are the common causes of glitches. In this study, one famous glitching pulsar, PSR~J2021+4026, is investigated. PSR~J2021+4026 is the first variable gamma-ray pulsar observed by Fermi. From the gamma-ray observations, it is found that the pulsar experienced a significant flux drop, an increase in the spin-down rate, a change in the pulse profile and a shift in the spectral cut-off to a lower energy, simultaneously around 2011 October 16. To explain these effects on the high-energy emissions by the glitch of PSR~J2021+4026, we hypothesized the glitch to be caused by the rearrangement of the surface magnetic field due to the crustal plate tectonic activities on the pulsar which is triggered by a starquake. In this glitch event, the inclination angle of the magnetic dipole axis is slightly shifted. This proposition is then tested by numerical modeling using a three-dimensional two-layer outer gap model. The simulation results indicate that a modification of the inclination angle can affect the pulse profile and the spectral properties, which can explain the observation changes after the glitch., Comment: 20 pages, 6 figures. We report the results from a detailed $\gamma-$ray investigation in the field of two "dark accelerators", HESS J1745-303 and HESS J1741-302, with $6.9$ years of data obtained by the Fermi Large Area Telescope. For HESS J1745-303, we found that its MeV-GeV emission is mainly originated from the "Region A" of the TeV feature. Its $\gamma-$ray spectrum can be modeled with a single power-law with a photon index of $\Gamma\sim2.5$ from few hundreds MeV to TeV. Moreover, an elongated feature, which extends from "Region A" toward northwest for $\sim1.3^{\circ}$, is discovered for the first time. The orientation of this feature is similar to that of a large scale atomic/molecular gas distribution. For HESS J1741-302, our analysis does not yield any MeV-GeV counterpart for this unidentified TeV source. On the other hand, we have detected a new point source, Fermi J1740.1-3013, serendipitously. Its spectrum is apparently curved which resembles that of a $\gamma-$ray pulsar. Swift, Chandra and XMM have found a weak but nearly constant X-ray component from Swift J1644+57 that appeared at ~500 days and was visible at least until ~ 1400 days after the stellar capture, which cannot be explained by standard tidal disruption theories. We suggest that this X-ray afterglow component may result from Thomson scattering between the primary X-rays and its surrounding plasma, i.e. the Compton echo effect. Similar phenomena has also been observed from molecular clouds in our Galactic Center, which were caused by the past activity of Srg A*. If this interpretation of Swift J1644+57 afterglow is correct, this is the first Compton Echo effect observed in the cosmological distances., Comment: To be published in ApJL, accepted

We explore a non-stationary outer gap scenario for gamma-ray emission process in pulsar magnetosphere. Electrons/positrons that migrate along the magnetic field line and enter the outer gap from the outer/inner boundaries activate the pair-creation cascade and high-energy emission process. In our model, the rate of the particle injection at the gap boundaries is key physical quantity to control the gap structure and properties of the gamma-ray spectrum. Our model assumes that the injection rate is time variable and the observed gamma-ray spectrum are superposition of the emissions from different gap structures with different injection rates at the gap boundaries. The calculated spectrum superposed by assuming power law distribution of the particle injection rate can reproduce sub-exponential cut-off feature in the gamma-ray spectrum observed by Fermi-LAT. We fit the phase-averaged spectra for 43 young/middle-age pulsars and 14 millisecond pulsars with the model. Our results imply that (1) a larger particle injection at the gap boundaries is more frequent for the pulsar with a larger spin down power and (2) outer gap with an injection rate much smaller than the Goldreich-Julian value produces observe $>10$GeV emissions. Fermi-LAT gamma-ray pulsars show that (i) the observed gamma-ray spectrum below cut-off energy tends to be softer for the pulsar with a higher spin down rate and (ii) the second peak is more prominent in higher energy bands. Based on the results of the fitting, we describe possible theoretical interpretations for these observational properties. In this paper, we use two model-independent methods to standardize long gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) using the $E_{\rm iso}-E_{\rm p}$ correlation, where $E_{\rm iso}$ is the isotropic-equivalent gamma-ray energy and $E_{\rm p}$ is the spectral peak energy. We update 42 long GRBs and try to make constraint on cosmological parameters. The full sample contains 151 long GRBs with redshifts from 0.0331 to 8.2. The first method is the simultaneous fitting method. The extrinsic scatter $\sigma_{\rm ext}$ is taken into account and assigned to the parameter $E_{\rm iso}$. The best-fitting values are $a=49.15\pm0.26$, $b=1.42\pm0.11$, $\sigma_{\rm ext}=0.34\pm0.03$ and $\Omega_m=0.79$ in the flat $\Lambda$CDM model. The constraint on $\Omega_m$ is $0.55<\Omega_m<1$ at the 1$\sigma$ confidence level. If reduced $\chi^2$ method is used, the best-fit results are $a=48.96\pm0.18$, $b=1.52\pm0.08$ and $\Omega_m=0.50\pm0.12$. The second method is using type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) to calibrate the $E_{\rm iso}-E_{\rm p}$ correlation. We calibrate 90 high-redshift GRBs in the redshift range from 1.44 to 8.1. The cosmological constraints from these 90 GRBs are $\Omega_m=0.23^{+0.06}_{-0.04}$ for flat $\Lambda$CDM, and $\Omega_m=0.18\pm0.11$ and $\Omega_{\Lambda}=0.46\pm0.51$ for non-flat $\Lambda$CDM. For the combination of GRB and SNe Ia sample, we obtain $\Omega_m=0.271\pm0.019$ and $h=0.701\pm0.002$ for the flat $\Lambda$CDM, and for the non-flat $\Lambda$CDM, the results are $\Omega_m=0.225\pm0.044$, $\Omega_{\Lambda}=0.640\pm0.082$ and $h=0.698\pm0.004$. These results from calibrated GRBs are consistent with that of SNe Ia. Meanwhile, the combined data can improve cosmological constraints significantly, comparing to SNe Ia alone. Here we report the results of searching millisecond pulsar (MSP) candidates from the Fermi LAT second source catalog (2FGL). Seven unassociated $\gamma-$ray sources in this catalog are identified as promising MSP candidates based on their $\gamma$-ray properties. Through the X-ray analysis, we have detected possible X-ray counterparts, localized to an arcsecond accuracy. We have systematically estimated their X-ray fluxes and compared with the corresponding $\gamma$-ray fluxes. The X-ray to $\gamma$-ray flux ratios for 2FGL J1653.6-0159 and 2FGL J1946.4-5402 are comparable with the typical value for pulsars. For 2FGL J1625.2-0020, 2FGL J1653.6-0159 and 2FGL J1946.4-5402, their candidate X-ray counterparts are bright enough for performing a detailed spectral and temporal analysis to discriminate their thermal/non thermal nature and search for the periodic signal. We have also searched for possible optical/IR counterparts at the X-ray positions. For the optical/IR source coincident with the brightest X-ray object that associated with 2FGL J1120.0-2204, its spectral energy distribution is comparable with a late-type star. Evidence for the variability has also been found by examining its optical light curve. All the aforementioned 2FGL sources resemble a pulsar in one or more aspects, which make them as the promising targets for follow-up investigations., Comment: 37 pages, 12 figures, 6 tables, accepted for publication in ApJ

From the rate of hydrogen ionization and the gamma ray flux, we derived the spectrum of relativistic and subrelativistic cosmic rays (CRs) nearby and inside the molecular cloud Sgr B2 near the Galactic Center (GC). We studied two cases of CR propagation in molecular clouds: free propagation and scattering of particles by magnetic fluctuations excited by the neutral gas turbulence. We showed that in the latter case CR propagation inside the cloud can be described as diffusion with the coefficient $\sim 3\times 10^{27}$ cm$^2$ s$^{-1}$. For the case of hydrogen ionization by subrelativistic protons, we showed that their spectrum outside the cloud is quite hard with the spectral index $\delta>-1$. The energy density of subrelativistic protons ($>50$ eV cm$^{-3}$) is one order of magnitude higher than that of relativistic CRs. These protons generate the 6.4 keV emission from Sgr B2, which was about 30\% of the flux observed by Suzaku in 2013. Future observations for the period after 2013 may discover the background flux generated by subrelativistic CRs in Sgr B2. Alternatively hydrogen ionization of the molecular gas in Sgr B2 may be caused by high energy electrons. We showed that the spectrum of electron bremsstrahlung is harder than the observed continuum from Sgr B2, and in principle this X-ray component provided by electrons could be seen from the INTEGRAL data as a stationary high energy excess above the observed spectrum $E_x^{-2}$., Comment: 42 pages, 6 figures, accepted by ApJ
