The radio interferometric closure phases can be a valuable tool for studying cosmological {H\scriptsize{I}}~from the early Universe. Closure phases have the advantage of being immune to element-based gains and associated calibration errors. Thus, calibration and errors therein, which are often sources of systematics limiting standard visibility-based approaches, can be avoided altogether in closure phase analysis. In this work, we present the first results of the closure phase power spectrum of {H\scriptsize{I}}~21-cm fluctuations using the Murchison Widefield Array (MWA), with $\sim 12$ hours of MWA-phase II observations centered around redshift, $z\approx 6.79$, during the Epoch of Reionisation. On analysing three redundant classes of baselines -- 14~m, 24~m, and 28~m equilateral triads, our estimates of the $2\sigma$ ($95\%$ confidence interval) 21-cm power spectra are $\lesssim (184)^2 pseudo \rm ~mK^2$ at ${k}_{||} = 0.36 $ $pseudo~h {\rm Mpc^{-1}}$ in the EoR1 field for the 14~m baseline triads, and $\lesssim (188)^2 pseudo \rm ~mK^2$ at $k_{||} = 0.18 $ $pseudo~h {\rm Mpc^{-1}}$ in the EoR0 field for the 24~m baseline triads. The ``$pseudo$'' units denote that the length scale and brightness temperature should be interpreted as close approximations. Our best estimates are still 3-4 orders high compared to the fiducial 21-cm power spectrum; however, our approach provides promising estimates of the power spectra even with a small amount of data. These data-limited estimates can be further improved if more datasets are included into the analysis. Observations of the 21 cm signal face significant challenges due to bright astrophysical foregrounds that are several orders of magnitude higher than the brightness of the hydrogen line, along with various systematics. Successful 21 cm experiments require accurate calibration and foreground mitigation. Errors introduced during the calibration process such as systematics, can disrupt the intrinsic frequency smoothness of the foregrounds, leading to power leakage into the Epoch of Reionisation (EoR) window. Therefore, it is essential to develop strategies to effectively address these challenges. In this work, we adopt a stringent approach to identify and address suspected systematics, including malfunctioning antennas, frequency channels corrupted by radio frequency interference (RFI), and other dominant effects. We implement a statistical framework that utilises various data products from the data processing pipeline to derive specific criteria and filters. These criteria and filters are applied at intermediate stages to mitigate systematic propagation from the early stages of data processing. Our analysis focuses on observations from the Murchison Widefield Array (MWA) Phase I configuration. Out of the observations processed by the pipeline, our approach selects 18%, totalling 58 hours, that exhibit fewer systematic effects. We present the first of two papers dedicated to verifying the Australian Epoch of Reionisation pipeline (AusEoRPipe) through simulation. The AusEoRPipe aims to disentangle 21-cm radiation emitted by gas surrounding the very first stars from contaminating foreground astrophysical sources, and has been in development for close to a decade. In this paper, we build an accurate 21-cm sky model that can be used by the WODEN simulation software to create visibilities containing a predictable 21-cm signal. We verify that the power spectrum estimator CHIPS can recover this signal in the absence of foregrounds. We also investigate how measurements in Fourier-space are correlated, and how their gridded density affects the power spectrum. We measure and fit for this effect using Gaussian-noise simulations of the MWA phase I layout. We find a gridding density correction factor of 2.651 appropriate for integrations equal to or greater than 30 minutes of data, which contain observations with multiple primary beam pointings and LSTs. We present the discovery of a unique Lyman-continuum (LyC) emitter at z=3.088. The LyC emission were detected using the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) WFC3/UVIS F336W filter, covering a rest-frame wavelength range of 760-900 Angstrom. The peak signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of LyC emission is 3.9 in a r=0.24'' aperture and is spatially offset by 0.29''+/-0.04'' (~ 2.2+/-0.3 kpc) from the rest-UV emission peak (F606W). By combining imaging and spectroscopic data from the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) JADES, FRESCO and JEMS surveys, along with VLT/MUSE data from the MXDF survey, we estimate that the probability of random alignment with an interloper galaxy causing the LyC emission is less than 6x10^-5. The interstellar medium (ISM) conditions in the galaxy are similar to other LyC emitters at high redshift (12+log(O/H)=7.79+/-0.06, logU =-3.27+/-0.14, O32 = 3.65+/-0.22), although the single-peaked Lyman-alpha profile and lack of rest-UV emission lines suggest an optically thick ISM. We think that LyC photons are leaking through a narrow cone of optically thin neutral ISM, most likely created by a past merger (as evidenced by medium-band F210M and F182M images). Using the escape fraction constraints from individual leakers and a simple model, we estimate that the opening half-angle of ionization cones can be as low as 16^deg (2% ionised fraction) to reproduce some of the theoretical constraints on the average escape fraction for galaxies. The cosmological 21cm signal offers a potential probe of the early Universe and the first ionizing sources. Current experiments probe the spatially-dependent variance (Gaussianity) of the signal through the power spectrum (PS). The signal however is expected to be highly non-Gaussian due to the complex topology of reionization and X-ray heating. We investigate the non-Gaussianities of X-ray heating and reionization, by calculating the skew spectrum (SS) of the 21cm signal using MERAXES, which couples a semi-analytic galaxy population with semi-numerical reionization simulations. The SS is the cross-spectrum of the quadratic temperature brightness field with itself. We generate a set of seven simulations from $z = 30$ to $z = 5$, varying the halo mass threshold for hosting star-formation, the X-ray luminosity per star-formation rate, and the minimum X-ray energy escaping host galaxies. We find the SS is predominantly negative as a function of redshift, transitioning to positive towards the start of reionization, and peaking during the midpoint of reionization. We do not see a negative dip in the SS during reionization, likely due to the specifics of modelling ionization sources. We normalise the SS by the PS during reionization isolating the non-Gaussianities. We find a trough ($k\sim\,0.1\,\textrm{Mpc}^{-1}$) and peak ($k\sim\,0.4-1\,\textrm{Mpc}^{-1}$) in the normalised SS during the mid to late periods of reionization. These correlate to the ionization topology, and neutral islands in the IGM. We calculate the cosmic variance of the normalised SS, and find these features are detectable in the absence of foregrounds with the SKA_LOW., Comment: 19 pages, 14 figures

We present deep upper limits from the 2014 Murchison Widefield Array (MWA) Phase I observing season, with a particular emphasis on identifying the spectral fingerprints of extremely faint radio frequency interference (RFI) contamination in the 21~cm power spectra (PS). After meticulous RFI excision involving a combination of the \textsc{SSINS} RFI flagger and a series of PS-based jackknife tests, our lowest upper limit on the Epoch of Reionization (EoR) 21~cm PS signal is $\Delta^2 \leq 1.61\cdot10^4 \text{ mK}^2$ at $k=0.258\text{ h Mpc}^{-1}$ at a redshift of 7.1 using 14.7 hours of data. By leveraging our understanding of how even fainter RFI is likely to contaminate the EoR PS, we are able to identify ultra-faint RFI signals in the cylindrical PS. Surprisingly this signature is most obvious in PS formed with less than an hour of data, but is potentially subdominant to other systematics in multiple-hour integrations. Since the total RFI budget in a PS detection is quite strict, this nontrivial integration behavior suggests a need to more realistically model coherently integrated ultra-faint RFI in PS measurements so that its potential contribution to a future detection can be diagnosed., Comment: Update acknowledgements, author metadata, and attach journal doi

Radio interferometers can potentially detect the sky-averaged signal from the Cosmic Dawn (CD) and the Epoch of Reionisation (EoR) by studying the Moon as a thermal block to the foreground sky. The first step is to mitigate the Earth-based RFI reflections (Earthshine) from the Moon, which significantly contaminate the FM band $\approx 88-110$ MHz, crucial to CD-EoR science. We analysed MWA phase-I data from $72-180$ MHz at $40$ kHz resolution to understand the nature of Earthshine over three observing nights. We took two approaches to correct the Earthshine component from the Moon. In the first method, we mitigated the Earthshine using the flux density of the two components from the data, while in the second method, we used simulated flux density based on an FM catalogue to mitigate the Earthshine. Using these methods, we were able to recover the expected Galactic foreground temperature of the patch of sky obscured by the Moon. We performed a joint analysis of the Galactic foregrounds and the Moon's intrinsic temperature $(T_{\rm Moon})$ while assuming that the Moon has a constant thermal temperature throughout three epochs. We found $T_{\rm Moon}$ to be at $184.4\pm{2.6}\rm ~K$ and $173.8\pm{2.5}\rm ~K$ using the first and the second methods, respectively, and the best-fit values of the Galactic spectral index $(\alpha)$ to be within the $5\%$ uncertainty level when compared with the global sky models. Compared with our previous work, these results improved constraints on the Galactic spectral index and the Moon's intrinsic temperature. We also simulated the Earthshine at MWA between November and December 2023 to find suitable observing times less affected by the Earthshine. Temporal broadening is a commonly observed property of fast radio bursts (FRBs), associated with turbulent media which cause radiowave scattering. Similarly to dispersion, scattering is an important probe of the media along the line of sight to an FRB source, such as the circum-burst or circum-galactic mediums (CGM). Measurements of characteristic scattering times alone are insufficient to constrain the position of the dominant scattering media along the line of sight. However, where more than one scattering screen exists, Galactic scintillation can be leveraged to form strong constraints. We quantify the scattering and scintillation in 10 FRBs with 1) known host galaxies and redshifts and 2) captured voltage data enabling high-time resolution analysis. We find strong evidence for two screens in three cases. For FRBs 20190608B and 20210320C, we find evidence for scattering screens less than approximately 16.7 and 3000 kpc respectively, from their sources, consistent with the scattering occurring in the circum-burst environment, the host ISM (inter-stellar medium) or the CGM. For FRB 20201124A we find a low modulation index that evolves over the burst's scattering tail, indicating the presence of a scattering screen $\approx9$ kpc from the host, and excluding the circum-burst environment from potential scattering sites. By assuming that pulse broadening is contributed by the host galaxy ISM or circum-burst environment, the lack of observed scintillation in four FRBs in our sample suggests that existing models may be poor estimators of scattering times associated with the Milky Way's ISM, similar to the anomalously low scattering observed for FRB 20201124A., Comment: 13 pages, 9 figures, 1 table. Fast cosmological transients such as fast radio bursts (FRBs) and gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) represent a class of sources more compact than any other cosmological object. As such they are sensitive to significant magnification via gravitational lensing from a class of lenses which are not well-constrained by observations today. Low-mass primordial black holes are one such candidate which may constitute a significant fraction of the Universe's dark matter. Current observations only constrain their density in the nearby Universe, giving fast transients from cosmological distances the potential to form complementary constraints. Motivated by this, we calculate the effect that gravitational lensing from a cosmological distribution of compact objects would have on the observed rates of FRBs and GRBs. For static lensing geometries, we rule out the prospect that all FRBs are gravitationally lensed for a range of lens masses and show that lens masses greater than $10^{-5}M_\odot$ can be constrained with 8000 un-localised high fluence FRBs at 1.4GHz, as might be detected by the next generation of FRB-finding telescopes., Comment: 10 pages (+7 Supplementary). The redshifted cosmological 21 cm signal emitted by neutral hydrogen during the first billion years of the universe is much fainter relative to other galactic and extragalactic radio emissions, posing a great challenge towards detection of the signal. Therefore, precise instrumental calibration is a vital prerequisite for the success of radio interferometers such as the Murchison Widefield Array (MWA), which aim for a 21 cm detection. Over the previous years, novel calibration techniques targeting the power spectrum paradigm of EoR science have been actively researched and where possible implemented. Using recently acquired computation resources for the MWA, we test the full capabilities of the state-of-the-art calibration techniques available for the MWA EoR project, with a focus on both direction dependent and direction independent calibration. Specifically, we investigate improvements that can be made in the vital calibration stages of sky modelling, ionospheric correction, and compact source foreground subtraction as applied in the hybrid foreground mitigation approach (one that combines both foreground subtraction and avoidance). Additionally, we investigate a method of ionospheric correction using interpolated ionospheric phase screens and assess its performance in the power spectrum space. Overall, we identify a refined RTS calibration configuration that leads to an at least 2 factor reduction of the EoR window power contamination at the $0.1 \; \text{hMpc}^{-1}$ scale. Preparing for the first detection of the cosmic 21-cm signal from large-scale interferometer experiments requires rigorous testing of the data analysis and reduction pipelines. To validate that these pipelines do not erroneously remove or add features that can mimic the cosmic signal (e.g. from side-lobes or large-scale power leakage), we require reionisation simulations larger than the experiments primary field of view. For an experiment such as the MWA, with a field of view of $\sim25^{2}$ deg.$^{2}$, this would require a simulation of several Gpcs, which is currently infeasible. To overcome this, we developed a simplified version of the semi-numerical reionisation simulation code 21CMFAST preferencing large volumes over some physical accuracy by assuming linear theory for structure formation. With this, we constructed a 7.5 Gpc comoving volume with voxel resolution of $\sim1.17$ cMpc tailored specifically to the binned spectral resolution of the MWA. This simulation was used for validating the pipelines for the 2020 MWA 21-cm power spectrum (PS) upper limits (Trott et al.). We then use this large-volume simulation to explore: (i) whether smaller volume simulations are biased by the missing large-scale modes, (ii) non-Gaussianity in estimates of the cosmic variance, (iii) biases in the recovered 21-cm PS following foreground wedge removal and (iv) the impact of tiling smaller volume simulations to achieve extremely large volumes. In summary, we find: (i) no biases from missing large-scale power, (ii) significant contribution from non-Gaussianity in the cosmic variance as expected following Mondal et al. (iii) an over-estimate of the 21-cm PS of 10-20 per cent following wedge mode excision for our particular model and (iv) tiling smaller volume simulations under-estimates the large-scale power and also the estimated cosmic variance., Comment: 13 pages, 9 figures and 1 table. We investigate the contribution of extended radio sources such as Centaurus A, and Galactic supernova remnants (SNRs) to our ability to detect the statistical $21\,\rm{cm}$ signal from the Epoch of Reionisation (EoR) with the Murchison Widefield Array (MWA). These sources are typically ignored because they are in highly attenuated parts of the MWA primary beam, however in aggregate these sources have apparent flux densities of $10\,\rm{Jy}$ on angular scales we expect to detect the $21\,\rm{cm}$ signal. We create bespoke multi-component 2D Gaussian models for Galactic SNRs and for Centaurus A, and simulate the visibilities for two MWA snapshot observations. We grid those visibilities and then Fourier transform them with respect to frequency, averaging them both spherically and cylindrically to produce the 1D and 2D power spectra. We compare the simulated 1D power spectra to the expected $21\,\rm{cm}$ power spectrum. We find that although these extended sources are in highly attenuated parts of the MWA primary beam pattern, collectively they have enough power ($\sim10^4-10^5\,\rm{mK^2}\,\it{h^{-3}} \,\rm{Mpc^{3}}$) on EoR significant modes ($|\mathbf{k}| \leq 0.1 h \rm{Mpc}^{-1}$) to prohibit detection of the $21\,\rm{cm}$ signal ($10^4\,\rm{mK^2}\,\it{h^{-3}} \,\rm{Mpc^{3}}$). We find that $50-90\%$ of sources must be removed in order to reduce leakage to a level of $10-20\%$ of the $21\,\rm{cm}$ power spectrum on EoR significant modes. The effects of widefield extended sources will have implications on the detectability of the $21\,\rm{cm}$ signal for the MWA and with the future Square Kilometre Array (SKA)., Comment: 17 pages, 8 png figures

In this paper we will list a few important goals that need to be addressed in the next decade, also taking into account the current discordances between the different cosmological probes, such as the disagreement in the value of the Hubble constant $H_0$, the $\sigma_8$--$S_8$ tension, and other less statistically significant anomalies. While these discordances can still be in part the result of systematic errors, their persistence after several years of accurate analysis strongly hints at cracks in the standard cosmological scenario and the necessity for new physics or generalisations beyond the standard model. In this paper, we focus on the $5.0\,\sigma$ tension between the {\it Planck} CMB estimate of the Hubble constant $H_0$ and the SH0ES collaboration measurements. After showing the $H_0$ evaluations made from different teams using different methods and geometric calibrations, we list a few interesting new physics models that could alleviate this tension and discuss how the next decade's experiments will be crucial. Moreover, we focus on the tension of the {\it Planck} CMB data with weak lensing measurements and redshift surveys, about the value of the matter energy density $\Omega_m$, and the amplitude or rate of the growth of structure ($\sigma_8,f\sigma_8$). We list a few interesting models proposed for alleviating this tension, and we discuss the importance of trying to fit a full array of data with a single model and not just one parameter at a time. Additionally, we present a wide range of other less discussed anomalies at a statistical significance level lower than the $H_0$--$S_8$ tensions which may also constitute hints towards new physics, and we discuss possible generic theoretical approaches that can collectively explain the non-standard nature of these signals.[Abridged], Comment: Contribution to Snowmass 2021. 224 pages, 27 figures. One of the principal systematic constraints on the Epoch of Reionisation (EoR) experiment is the accuracy of the foreground calibration model. Recent results have shown that highly accurate models of extended foreground sources, and including models for sources in both the primary beam and its sidelobes, are necessary for reducing foreground power. To improve the accuracy of the source models for the EoR fields observed by the Murchison Widefield Array (MWA), we conducted the MWA Long Baseline Epoch of Reionisation Survey (LoBES). This survey consists of multi-frequency observations of the main MWA EoR fields and their eight neighbouring fields using the MWA Phase II extended array. We present the results of the first half of this survey centred on the MWA EoR0 observing field (centred at RA(J2000) 0 h, Dec(J2000) -27 deg). This half of the survey covers an area of 3069 degrees$^2$, with an average rms of 2.1 mJy beam$^{-1}$. The resulting catalogue contains a total of 80824 sources, with 16 separate spectral measurements between 100 and 230 MHz, and spectral modelling for 78$\%$ of these sources. Over this region we estimate that the catalogue is 90$\%$ complete at 32 mJy, and 70$\%$ complete at 10.5~mJy. The overall normalised source counts are found to be in good agreement with previous low-frequency surveys at similar sensitivities. Testing the performance of the new source models we measure lower residual rms values for peeled sources, particularly for extended sources, in a set of MWA Phase I data. The 2-dimensional power spectrum of these data residuals also show improvement on small angular scales -- consistent with the better angular resolution of the LoBES catalogue. Current attempts to measure the 21cm Power Spectrum of neutral hydrogen during the Epoch of Reionization are limited by systematics which produce measured upper limits above both the thermal noise and the expected cosmological signal. These systematics arise from a combination of observational, instrumental, and analysis effects. In order to further understand and mitigate these effects, it is instructive to explore different aspects of existing datasets. One such aspect is the choice of observing field. To date, MWA EoR observations have largely focused on the EoR0 field. In this work, we present a new detailed analysis of the EoR1 field. The EoR1 field is one of the coldest regions of the Southern radio sky, but contains the very bright radio galaxy Fornax-A. The presence of this bright extended source in the primary beam of the interferometer makes the calibration and analysis of EoR1 particularly challenging. We demonstrate the effectiveness of a recently developed shapelet model of Fornax-A in improving the results from this field. We also describe and apply a series of data quality metrics which identify and remove systematically contaminated data. With substantially improved source models, upgraded analysis algorithms and enhanced data quality metrics, we determine EoR power spectrum upper limits based on analysis of the best $\sim$14-hours data observed during 2015 and 2014 at redshifts 6.5, 6.8 and 7.1, with the lowest $2\sigma$ upper limit at z=6.5 of $\Delta^2 \leq (73.78 ~\mathrm{mK)^2}$ at $k=0.13~\mathrm{h~ Mpc^{-1}}$, improving on previous EoR1 measurement results., Comment: 18 pages, 17 figures, Accepted for publication in MNRAS

Observations in the lowest MWA band between $75-100$ MHz have the potential to constrain the distribution of neutral hydrogen in the intergalactic medium at redshift $\sim 13-17$. Using 15 hours of MWA data, we analyse systematics in this band such as radio-frequency interference (RFI), ionospheric and wide field effects. By updating the position of point sources, we mitigate the direction independent calibration error due to ionospheric offsets. Our calibration strategy is optimized for the lowest frequency bands by reducing the number of direction dependent calibrators and taking into account radio sources within a wider field of view. We remove data polluted by systematics based on the RFI occupancy and ionospheric conditions, finally selecting 5.5 hours of the cleanest data. Using these data, we obtain two sigma upper limits on the 21 cm power spectrum in the range of $0.1\lessapprox k \lessapprox 1 ~\rm ~h~Mpc^{-1}$ and at $z$=14.2, 15.2 and 16.5, with the lowest limit being $6.3\times 10^6 ~\rm mK^2$ at $\rm k=0.14 \rm ~h~Mpc^{-1}$ and at $z=15.2$ with a possibility of a few \% of signal loss due to direction independent calibration., Comment: 17 pages, 18 figures, accepted to MNRAS

Aiming to fill a crucial gap in our observational knowledge of the early Universe, experiments around the world continue to attempt to verify the claimed detection of the redshifted 21-cm signal from Cosmic Dawn by the EDGES experiment. This sky-averaged or 'global' signal from neutral hydrogen should be detectable at low radio frequencies (50-200 MHz), but is difficult to measure due to bright foreground emission and difficulties in reaching the required levels of instrumental-calibration precision. In this paper we outline our progress toward using a novel new method to measure the global redshifted 21-cm signal. Motivated by the need to use alternative methods with very different systematic errors to EDGES for an independent result, we employ an array of closely-spaced antennas to measure the global sky signal interferometrically, rather than using the conventional approach with a single antenna. We use simulations to demonstrate our newly-developed methods and show that, for an idealised instrument, a 21-cm signal could theoretically be extracted from the visibilities of an array of closely-spaced dipoles. We verify that our signal-extraction methods work on real data using observations made with a Square Kilometre-Array-like prototype; the Engineering Development Array-2. Finally, we use the lessons learned in both our simulations and observations to lay out a clear plan for future work, which will ultimately lead to a new global redshifted 21-cm instrument: the All-Sky SignAl Short-Spacing INterferometer (ASSASSIN)., Comment: 18 pages, 13 figures

We use the latest multi-redshift ($z=6.5-8.7$) upper limits on the 21-cm signal from the Murchison Widefield Array (MWA) to explore astrophysical models which are inconsistent with the data. These upper limits are achieved using 298 h of carefully excised data over four observing seasons. To explore these upper limits in the context of reionisation astrophysics, we use 21CMMC. We then connect the disfavoured regions of parameter space to existing observational constraints on reionisation such as high-$z$ galaxy ultra-violet (UV) luminosity functions, background UV photoionisation rate, intergalactic medium (IGM) neutral fraction, the electron scattering optical depth and the soft-band X-ray emissivity. We find the vast majority of models disfavoured by the MWA limits are already inconsistent with existing observational constraints. These inconsistent models arise from two classes of models: (i) `cold' reionisation and (ii) pure matter density fluctuations (i.e. no reionisation). However, a small subsample of models are consistent implying the existing MWA limits provide unique information in disfavouring models of reionisation, albeit extremely weakly. We also provide the first limits on the soft-band X-ray emissivity from galaxies at high redshifts, finding $1\sigma$ lower limits of $\epsilon_{{\rm X},0.5-2~{\rm keV}}\gtrsim10^{34.5}$ erg s$^{-1}$ Mpc$^{-3}$. Finally, we recover 95 per cent disfavoured limits on the IGM spin temperature of $\bar{T}_{\rm S}\lesssim$ 1.3, 1.4, 1.5, 1.8, 2.1, 2.4 K at $z=6.5, 6.8, 7.1, 7.8, 8.2, 8.7$. With this we infer the IGM must have undergone, at the very least, a small amount of X-ray heating. To make a power spectrum (PS) detection of the 21 cm signal from the Epoch of Reionisation (EoR), one must avoid/subtract bright foreground sources. Sources such as Fornax A present a modelling challenge due to spatial structures spanning from arc seconds up to a degree. We compare modelling with multi-scale (MS) CLEAN components to 'shapelets', an alternative set of basis functions. We introduce a new image-based shapelet modelling package, SHAMFI. We also introduce a new CUDA simulation code (WODEN) to generate point source, Gaussian, and shapelet components into visibilities. We test performance by modelling a simulation of Fornax A, peeling the model from simulated visibilities, and producing a residual PS. We find the shapelet method consistently subtracts large-angular-scale emission well, even when the angular-resolution of the data is changed. We find that when increasing the angular-resolution of the data, the MS CLEAN model worsens at large angular-scales. When testing on real MWA data, the expected improvement is not seen in real data because of the other dominating systematics still present. Through further simulation we find the expected differences to be lower than obtainable through current processing pipelines. Predictions for the ability of 21-cm interferometric experiments to discriminate Epoch of Reionization (EoR) signal models are typically limited by the simplicity of data models, whereby foreground signals and characteristics of the instrument are often simplified or neglected.To move towards more realistic scenarios, we explore the effects of applying more realistic foreground and instrument models to the 21cm signal, and the ability to estimate astrophysical parameters with these additional complexities. We use a highly-optimized version of \textsc{21cmFAST}, integrated into \textsc{21cmMC}, to generate lightcones of the brightness temperature fluctuation for Bayesian parameter estimation. We include a statistical point-source foreground model and an instrument model based on the Murchison Widefield Array (MWA) scaled in observation time to have an effective sensitivity similar to the future Square Kilometre Array (SKA). We also extend the current likelihood prescription to account for the presence of beam convolution and foregrounds, the 2-Dimensional Power Spectrum (PS), and the correlation of PS modes. We use frequency bands between 150 and 180 MHz to constrain the ionizing efficiency ($\zeta$), the minimum virial temperature of halos ($T_{\mathrm{vir}}$), the soft X-ray emissivity per unit Star Formation Rate (SFR) ($L_X/SFR$ ), and the X-ray energy threshold ($E_0$). We find that the inclusion of realistic foregrounds and instrumental components biases the parameter constraints due to unaccounted for cross-power between the EoR signal, foregrounds and thermal noise. This causes estimates of $\zeta$ to be biased by up to $5\sigma$ but the estimates of $T_{vir}$, L$_X$/SFR and E$_0$ remain unaffected and are all within $1\sigma$.

Numerous studies have established the theoretical potential of the 21cm bispectrum to boost our understanding of the Epoch of Reionization (EoR), and therefore early generation of stars and galaxies. In this paper we look at the impact of foregrounds and instrumental effects on the 21cm bispectrum and our ability to measure it. Unlike the power spectrum for which (in the absence of instrumental effects) there is a window clear of smooth-spectrum foregrounds in which the 21cm power spectrum may be detectable, there is no such "EoR window" for the bispectrum. Instead, on smaller scales EoR structure modulates that of the foregrounds (FG) to alter the EoR+FG bispectrum from that of the foregrounds in a complex manner. On larger scales the EoR structures are completely swamped by those of the foregrounds, and the EoR+FG bispectrum is entirely dominated by that of the foregrounds. It is therefore unlikely that the bispectrum will be useful in cases where we are observationally restricted to using foreground avoidance techniques. We also find that there is potential for instrumental effects to seriously corrupt the bispectrum, possibly even rendering the bispectrum useless for parameter estimation. On larger scales, foreground removal using GMCA is found to recover the EoR bispectrum to a reasonable level of accuracy (even better than the power spectrum for certain configurations). Further studies are necessary to understand the error and/or bias associated with foreground removal before the 21cm bispectrum can be practically applied in analysis of future data., Comment: 14 pages, 13 figures + 2 appendix figures. Detecting a signal from the Epoch of Reionisation (EoR) requires an exquisite understanding of galactic and extra-galactic foregrounds, low frequency radio instruments, instrumental calibration, and data analysis pipelines. In this work we build upon existing work that aims to understand the impact of calibration errors on 21-cm power spectrum (PS) measurements. It is well established that calibration errors have the potential to inhibit EoR detections by introducing additional spectral features that mimic the structure of EoR signals. We present a straightforward way to estimate the impact of a wide variety of modelling residuals in EoR PS estimation. We apply this framework to the specific case of broken dipoles in Murchison Widefield Array (MWA) to understand its effect and estimate its impact on PS estimation. Combining an estimate of the percentage of MWA tiles that have at least one broken dipole (15%-40%) with an analytic description of beam errors induced by such dipoles, we compute the residuals of the foregrounds after calibration and source subtraction. We find that that incorrect beam modelling introduces bias in the 2D-PS on the order of $\sim 10^3\, \mathrm{mK}^2 \,h^{-3}\, \mathrm{Mpc}^{3}$. Although this is three orders of magnitude lower than current lowest limits, it is two orders of magnitude higher than the expected signal. Determining the accuracy of both current beam models and direction dependent calibration pipelines is therefore crucial in our search for an EoR signal., Comment: 14 pages, 8 figures. The compact configuration of Phase II of the Murchison Widefield Array (MWA) consists of both a redundant subarray and pseudo-random baselines, offering unique opportunities to perform sky-model and redundant interferometric calibration. The highly redundant hexagonal cores give improved power spectrum sensitivity. In this paper, we present the analysis of nearly 40 hours of data targeting one of the MWA's EoR fields observed in 2016. We use both improved analysis techniques presented in Barry et al. (2019) as well as several additional techniques developed for this work, including data quality control methods and interferometric calibration approaches. We show the EoR power spectrum limits at redshift 6.5, 6.8 and 7.1 based on our deep analysis on this 40-hour data set. These limits span a range in $k$ space of $0.18$ $h$ $\mathrm{Mpc^{-1}}$ $

Measurements of 21 cm Epoch of Reionization (EoR) structure are subject to systematics originating from both the analysis and the observation conditions. Using 2013 data from the Murchison Widefield Array (MWA), we show the importance of mitigating both sources of contamination. A direct comparison between results from Beardsley et al. 2016 and our updated analysis demonstrates new precision techniques, lowering analysis systematics by a factor of 2.8 in power. We then further lower systematics by excising observations contaminated by ultra-faint RFI, reducing by an additional factor of 3.8 in power for the zenith pointing. With this enhanced analysis precision and newly developed RFI mitigation, we calculate a noise-dominated upper limit on the EoR structure of $\Delta^2 \leq 3.9 \times 10^3$ mK$^2$ at $k=0.20$ $\textit{h}$ Mpc$^{-1}$ and $z=7$ using 21 hr of data, improving previous MWA limits by almost an order of magnitude., Comment: 21 pages, 10 figures, published in ApJ, updated title and text

Precise instrument calibration is critical to the success of 21 cm Cosmology experiments. Unmitigated errors in calibration contaminate the Epoch of Reionization (EoR) signal, precluding a detection. Barry et al. 2016 characterizes one class of inherent errors that emerge from calibrating to an incomplete sky model, however it has been unclear if errors in the sky model affect the calibration of redundant arrays. In this paper, we show that redundant calibration is vulnerable to errors from sky model incompleteness even in the limit of perfect antenna positioning and identical beams. These errors are at a level that can overwhelm the EoR signal and prevent a detection. Finally, we suggest error mitigation strategies with implications for the Hydrogen Epoch of Reionization Array (HERA) and the Square Kilometre Array (SKA).

We present early results from a project to measure the sky-averaged (global), redshifted $21\,$cm signal from the Epoch of Reionisation (EoR), using the Murchison Widefield Array (MWA) telescope. Because interferometers are not sensitive to a spatially-invariant global average, they cannot be used to detect this signal using standard techniques. However, lunar occultation of the radio sky imprints a spatial structure on the global signal, allowing us to measure the average brightness temperature of the patch of sky immediately surrounding the Moon. In this paper we present one night of Moon observations with the MWA between 72 - 230 MHz and verify our techniques to extract the background sky temperature from measurements of the Moon's flux density. We improve upon previous work using the lunar occultation technique by using a more sophisticated model for reflected `earthshine' and by employing image differencing to remove imaging artefacts. We leave the Moon's (constant) radio brightness temperature as a free parameter in our fit to the data and as a result, measure $T_{\rm{moon}} = 180 \pm 12 $ K and a Galactic synchrotron spectral index of $-2.64\pm0.14$, at the position of the Moon. Finally, we evaluate the prospects of the lunar occultation technique for a global EoR detection and map out a way forward for future work with the MWA., Comment: 13 pages, 7 figures, accepted in MNRAS

Detections of the cross correlation signal between the 21cm signal during reionization and high-redshift Lyman Alpha emitters (LAEs) are subject to observational uncertainties which mainly include systematics associated with radio interferometers and LAE selection. These uncertainties can be reduced by increasing the survey volume and/or the survey luminosity limit, i.e. the faintest detectable Lyman Alpha (Ly$\alpha$) luminosity. We use our model of high-redshift LAEs and the underlying reionization state to compute the uncertainties of the 21cm-LAE cross correlation function at $z\simeq6.6$ for observations with SKA1-Low and LAE surveys with $\Delta z=0.1$ for three different values of the average IGM ionization state ($\langle\chi_\mathrm{HI}\rangle$=0.1, 0.25, 0.5). At $z\simeq6.6$, we find SILVERRUSH type surveys, with a field of view of 21 deg$^2$ and survey luminosity limits of $L_\alpha\geq7.9\times10^{42}$erg~s$^{-1}$, to be optimal to distinguish between an inter-galactic medium (IGM) that is 50%, 25% and 10% neutral, while surveys with smaller fields of view and lower survey luminosity limits, such as the 5 and 10 deg$^2$ surveys with WFIRST, can only discriminate between a 50% and 10% neutral IGM., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

Observation of the 21cm line signal from neutral hydrogen during the Epoch of Reionization is challenging due to extremely bright Galactic and extragalactic foregrounds and complicated instrumental calibration. A reasonable approach for mitigating these problems is the cross correlation with other observables. In this work, we present the first results of the cross power spectrum (CPS) between radio images observed by the Murchison Widefield Array and the cosmic microwave background (CMB), measured by the Planck experiment. We study the systematics due to the ionospheric activity, the dependence of CPS on group of pointings, and frequency. The resulting CPS is consistent with zero because the error is dominated by the foregrounds in the 21cm observation. Additionally, the variance of the signal indicates the presence of unexpected systematics error at small scales. Furthermore, we reduce the error by one order of magnitude with application of a foreground removal using a polynomial fitting method. Based on the results, we find that the detection of the 21cm-CMB CPS with the MWA Phase I requires more than 99.95% of the foreground signal removed, 2000 hours of deep observation and 50% of the sky fraction coverage., Comment: 15 pages, 16 figures, accepted to MNRAS

We review an improved statistical model of extra-galactic point-source foregrounds first introduced in [Murray 2017], in the context of the Epoch of Reionization. This model extends the instrumentally-convolved foreground covariance used in inverse-covariance foreground mitigation schemes, by considering the cosmological clustering of the sources. In this short work, we show that over scales of $k \sim (0.6, 40.) h {\rm Mpc}^{-1}$, ignoring source clustering is a valid approximation. This is in contrast to [Murray 2017], who found a possibility of false detection if the clustering was ignored. The dominant cause for this change is the introduction of a Galactic synchrotron component which shadows the clustering of sources., Comment: 4 pages, 1 figure. We present a sophisticated statistical point-source foreground model for low-frequency radio Epoch of Reionization (EoR) experiments using the 21 cm neutral hydrogen emission line. Motivated by our understanding of the low-frequency radio sky, we enhance the realism of two model components compared with existing models: the source count distributions as a function of flux density and spatial position (source clustering), extending current formalisms for the foreground covariance of 2D power spectral modes in 21 cm EoR experiments. The former we generalise to an arbitrarily broken power-law, and the latter to an arbitrary isotropically-correlated field. This paper presents expressions for the modified covariance under these extensions, and shows that for a more realistic source spatial distribution, extra covariance arises in the EoR window which was previously unaccounted for. Failure to include this contribution can yield bias in the final power spectrum and under-estimate uncertainties, potentially leading to a false detection of signal. The extent of this effect is uncertain, owing to ignorance of physical model parameters, but we show that it is dependent on the relative abundance of faint sources, to the effect that our extension will become more important for future deep surveys. Finally, we show that under some parameter choices, ignoring source clustering can lead to false detections on large scales, due to both the induced bias and an artificial reduction in the estimated measurement uncertainty., Comment: 18 pages, 10 figures, accepted in ApJ

We investigate the cosmology of the minimal model of neutral naturalness, the mirror Twin Higgs. The softly-broken mirror symmetry relating the Standard Model to its twin counterpart leads to significant dark radiation in tension with BBN and CMB observations. We quantify this tension and illustrate how it can be mitigated in several simple scenarios that alter the relative energy densities of the two sectors while respecting the softly-broken mirror symmetry. In particular, we consider both the out-of-equilibrium decay of a new scalar as well as reheating in a toy model of twinned inflation, Twinflation. In both cases the dilution of energy density in the twin sector does not merely reconcile the existence of a mirror Twin Higgs with cosmological constraints, but predicts contributions to cosmological observables that may be probed in current and future CMB experiments. The Detection of redshifted 21 cm emission from the epoch of reionization (EoR) is a challenging task owing to strong foregrounds that dominate the signal. In this paper, we propose a general method, based on the delay spectrum approach, to extract HI power spectra that is applicable to tracking observations using an imaging radio interferometer (Delay Spectrum with Imaging Arrays (DSIA)). Our method is based on modelling the HI signal taking into account the impact of wide field effects such as the $w$-term which are then used as appropriate weights in cross-correlating the measured visibilities. Our method is applicable to any radio interferometer that tracks a phase center and could be utilized for arrays such as MWA, LOFAR, GMRT, PAPER and HERA. In the literature the delay spectrum approach has been implemented for near-redundant baselines using drift scan observations. In this paper we explore the scheme for non-redundant tracking arrays, and this is the first application of delay spectrum methodology to such data to extract the HI signal. We analyze 3 hours of MWA tracking data on the EoR1 field. We present both 2-dimensional ($k_\parallel,k_\perp$) and 1-dimensional (k) power spectra from the analysis. The Murchison Widefield Array (MWA) has collected hundreds of hours of Epoch of Reionization (EoR) data and now faces the challenge of overcoming foreground and systematic contamination to reduce the data to a cosmological measurement. We introduce several novel analysis techniques such as cable reflection calibration, hyper-resolution gridding kernels, diffuse foreground model subtraction, and quality control methods. Each change to the analysis pipeline is tested against a two dimensional power spectrum figure of merit to demonstrate improvement. We incorporate the new techniques into a deep integration of 32 hours of MWA data. This data set is used to place a systematic-limited upper limit on the cosmological power spectrum of $\Delta^2 \leq 2.7 \times 10^4$ mK$^2$ at $k=0.27$ h~Mpc$^{-1}$ and $z=7.1$, consistent with other published limits, and a modest improvement (factor of 1.4) over previous MWA results. From this deep analysis we have identified a list of improvements to be made to our EoR data analysis strategies. Detection of the Epoch of Reionization HI signal requires a precise understanding of the intervening galaxies and AGN, both for instrumental calibration and foreground removal. We present a catalogue of 7394 extragalactic sources at 182 MHz detected in the RA=0 field of the Murchison Widefield Array Epoch of Reionization observation programme. Motivated by unprecedented requirements for precision and reliability we develop new methods for source finding and selection. We apply machine learning methods to self-consistently classify the relative reliability of 9490 source candidates. A subset of 7466 are selected based on reliability class and signal-to-noise ratio criteria. These are statistically cross-matched to four other radio surveys using both position and flux density information. We find 7369 sources to have confident matches, including 90 partially resolved sources that split into a total of 192 sub-components. An additional 25 unmatched sources are included as new radio detections. The catalogue sources have a median spectral index of -0.85. Spectral flattening is seen toward lower frequencies with a median of -0.71 predicted at 182 MHz. The astrometric error is 7 arcsec. compared to a 2.3 arcmin. beam FWHM. The resulting catalogue covers approximately 1400 sq. deg. and is complete to approximately 80 mJy within half beam power. We present the 21 cm power spectrum analysis approach of the Murchison Widefield Array Epoch of Reionization project. In this paper, we compare the outputs of multiple pipelines for the purpose of validating statistical limits cosmological hydrogen at redshifts between 6 and 12. Multiple, independent, data calibration and reduction pipelines are used to make power spectrum limits on a fiducial night of data. Comparing the outputs of imaging and power spectrum stages highlights differences in calibration, foreground subtraction and power spectrum calculation. The power spectra found using these different methods span a space defined by the various tradeoffs between speed, accuracy, and systematic control. Lessons learned from comparing the pipelines range from the algorithmic to the prosaically mundane; all demonstrate the many pitfalls of neglecting reproducibility. The V-FASTR experiment on the Very Long Baseline Array was designed to detect dispersed pulses of milliseconds duration, such as fast radio bursts (FRBs). We use all V-FASTR data through February 2015 to report V-FASTR's upper limits on the rates of FRBs, and compare these with re-derived rates from Parkes FRB detection experiments. V-FASTR's operation at lambda=20 cm allows direct comparison with the 20 cm Parkes rate, and we derive a power-law limit of \gamma<-0.4 (95% confidence limit) on the index of FRB source counts, N(>S)\propto S^\gamma. Using the previously measured FRB rate and the unprecedented amount of survey time spent searching for FRBs at a large range of wavelengths (0.3 cm > \lambda > 90 cm), we also place frequency-dependent limits on the spectral distribution of FRBs. The most constraining frequencies place two-point spectral index limits of \alpha_{20cm}^{4cm} < 5.8 and \alpha_{90cm}^{20cm} > -7.6, where fluence F \propto f^\alpha if we assume true the burst rate reported by Champion et al. (2016) of R(F~0.6 Jy ms) = 7 x 10^3 sky^{-1} day^{-1} (for bursts of ~3 ms duration). This upper limit on \alpha suggests that if FRBs are extragalactic but non-cosmological, that on average they are not experiencing excessive free-free absorption due to a medium with high optical depth (assuming temperature ~8,000 K), which excessively invert their low-frequency spectrum. This in turn implies that the dispersion of FRBs arises in either or both of the intergalactic medium or the host galaxy, rather than from the source itself., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ

We study the signatures of reionization and ionizing properties of the early galaxies in the cross-correlations between the 21cm emission from the spin-flip transition of neutral hydrogen (HI) and the underlying galaxy population, in particular a sub-population of galaxies visible as Lyman Alpha Emitters (LAEs). With both observables simultaneously derived from a $z\simeq6.6$ hydrodynamical simulation (GADGET-2) snapshot post-processed with a radiative transfer code (pCRASH) and a dust model, we perform a parameter study and aim to constrain both the average intergalactic medium (IGM) ionization state ($1-\langle \chi_{HI} \rangle$) and the reionization topology (outside-in versus inside-out). We find that in our model LAEs occupy the densest and most-ionized regions resulting in a very strong anti-correlation between the LAEs and the 21cm emission. A 1000h SKA-LOW1 - Subaru Hyper Suprime Cam experiment can provide constraints on $\langle \chi_{HI} \rangle$, allowing us to distinguish between IGM ionization levels of 50%, 25%, 10% and fully ionized at scales $r<10$ comoving Mpc (assuming foreground avoidance for SKA). Our results support the inside-out reionization scenario where the densest knots (under-dense voids) are ionized first (last) for $\langle \chi_{HI} \rangle >= 0.1$. Further, 1000h SKA-LOW1 observations should be able to confirm the inside-out scenario by detecting a lower 21cm brightness temperature (by about 2-10 mK) in the densest regions ($> 2$ arcminute scales) hosting LAEs compared to lower-density regions devoid of them., Comment: 20 pages, 9 figures, accepted in ApJ, comments welcome

We present first results from radio observations with the Murchison Widefield Array seeking to constrain the power spectrum of 21 cm brightness temperature fluctuations between the redshifts of 11.6 and 17.9 (113 and 75 MHz). Three hours of observations were conducted over two nights with significantly different levels of ionospheric activity. We use these data to assess the impact of systematic errors at low frequency, including the ionosphere and radio-frequency interference, on a power spectrum measurement. We find that after the 1-3 hours of integration presented here, our measurements at the Murchison Radio Observatory are not limited by RFI, even within the FM band, and that the ionosphere does not appear to affect the level of power in the modes that we expect to be sensitive to cosmology. Power spectrum detections, inconsistent with noise, due to fine spectral structure imprinted on the foregrounds by reflections in the signal-chain, occupy the spatial Fourier modes where we would otherwise be most sensitive to the cosmological signal. We are able to reduce this contamination using calibration solutions derived from autocorrelations so that we achieve an sensitivity of $10^4$ mK on comoving scales $k\lesssim 0.5 h$Mpc$^{-1}$. This represents the first upper limits on the $21$ cm power spectrum fluctuations at redshifts $12\lesssim z \lesssim 18$ but is still limited by calibration systematics. Experiments that pursue detection of signals from the Epoch of Reionization (EoR) are relying on spectral smoothness of source spectra at low frequencies. This article empirically explores the effect of foreground spectra on EoR experiments by measuring high-resolution full-polarization spectra for the 586 brightest unresolved sources in one of the MWA EoR fields using 45 h of observation. A novel peeling scheme is used to subtract 2500 sources from the visibilities with ionospheric and beam corrections, resulting in the deepest, confusion-limited MWA image so far. The resulting spectra are found to be affected by instrumental effects, which limit the constraints that can be set on source-intrinsic spectral structure. The sensitivity and power-spectrum of the spectra are analysed, and it is found that the spectra of residuals are dominated by PSF sidelobes from nearby undeconvolved sources. In this paper we present observations, simulations, and analysis demonstrating the direct connection between the location of foreground emission on the sky and its location in cosmological power spectra from interferometric redshifted 21 cm experiments. We begin with a heuristic formalism for understanding the mapping of sky coordinates into the cylindrically averaged power spectra measurements used by 21 cm experiments, with a focus on the effects of the instrument beam response and the associated sidelobes. We then demonstrate this mapping by analyzing power spectra with both simulated and observed data from the Murchison Widefield Array. We find that removing a foreground model which includes sources in both the main field-of-view and the first sidelobes reduces the contamination in high k_parallel modes by several percent relative to a model which only includes sources in the main field-of-view, with the completeness of the foreground model setting the principal limitation on the amount of power removed. While small, a percent-level amount of foreground power is in itself more than enough to prevent recovery of any EoR signal from these modes. This result demonstrates that foreground subtraction for redshifted 21 cm experiments is truly a wide-field problem, and algorithms and simulations must extend beyond the main instrument field-of-view to potentially recover the full 21 cm power spectrum., Comment: 13 pages, 9 figures, matches version accepted to ApJ

We present the results of a pilot study search for Fast Radio Bursts (FRBs) using the Murchison Widefield Array (MWA) at low frequencies (139 - 170 MHz). We utilised MWA data obtained in a routine imaging mode from observations where the primary target was a field being studied for Epoch of Reionisation detection. We formed images with 2 second time resolution and 1.28~MHz frequency resolution for 10.5 hours of observations, over 400 square degrees of the sky. We de-dispersed the dynamic spectrum in each of 372,100 resolution elements of 2$\times$2 arcmin$^{2}$, between dispersion measures of 170 and 675~pc~cm$^{-3}$. Based on the event rate calculations in Trott, Tingay & Wayth (2013), which assumes a standard candle luminosity of $8\times10^{37}$ Js$^{-1}$, we predict that with this choice of observational parameters, the MWA should detect ($\sim10$,$\sim2$,$\sim0$) FRBs with spectral indices corresponding to ($-$2, $-$1, 0), based on a 7$\sigma$ detection threshold. We find no FRB candidates above this threshold from our search, placing an event rate limit of $<700$ above 700 Jy.ms per day per sky and providing evidence against spectral indices $\alpha<-1.2$ ($S\propto\nu^{\alpha}$). We compare our event rate and spectral index limits with others from the literature. We briefly discuss these limits in light of recent suggestions that supergiant pulses from young neutron stars could explain FRBs. We find that such supergiant pulses would have to have much flatter spectra between 150 and 1400 MHz than have been observed from Crab giant pulses to be consistent with the FRB spectral index limit we derive., Comment: 14 pages, 5 figures

We confirm our recent prediction of the "pitchfork" foreground signature in power spectra of high-redshift 21 cm measurements where the interferometer is sensitive to large-scale structure on all baselines. This is due to the inherent response of a wide-field instrument and is characterized by enhanced power from foreground emission in Fourier modes adjacent to those considered to be the most sensitive to the cosmological H I signal. In our recent paper, many signatures from the simulation that predicted this feature were validated against Murchison Widefield Array (MWA) data, but this key pitchfork signature was close to the noise level. In this paper, we improve the data sensitivity through the coherent averaging of 12 independent snapshots with identical instrument settings and provide the first confirmation of the prediction with a signal-to-noise ratio > 10. This wide-field effect can be mitigated by careful antenna designs that suppress sensitivity near the horizon. Simple models for antenna apertures that have been proposed for future instruments such as the Hydrogen Epoch of Reionization Array and the Square Kilometre Array indicate they should suppress foreground leakage from the pitchfork by ~40 dB relative to the MWA and significantly increase the likelihood of cosmological signal detection in these critical Fourier modes in the three-dimensional power spectrum., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ Letters, 6 pages, 2 figures

The separation of the faint cosmological background signal from bright astrophysical foregrounds remains one of the most daunting challenges of mapping the high-redshift intergalactic medium with the redshifted 21 cm line of neutral hydrogen. Advances in mapping and modeling of diffuse and point source foregrounds have improved subtraction accuracy, but no subtraction scheme is perfect. Precisely quantifying the errors and error correlations due to missubtracted foregrounds allows for both the rigorous analysis of the 21 cm power spectrum and for the maximal isolation of the "EoR window" from foreground contamination. We present a method to infer the covariance of foreground residuals from the data itself in contrast to previous attempts at a priori modeling. We demonstrate our method by setting limits on the power spectrum using a 3 h integration from the 128-tile Murchison Widefield Array. Observing between 167 and 198 MHz, we find at 95% confidence a best limit of Delta^2(k) < 3.7 x 10^4 mK^2 at comoving scale k = 0.18 hMpc^-1 and at z = 6.8, consistent with existing limits., Comment: 18 pages, 9 figures. Concerted effort is currently ongoing to open up the Epoch of Reionization (EoR) ($z\sim$15-6) for studies with IR and radio telescopes. Whereas IR detections have been made of sources (Lyman-$\alpha$ emitters, quasars and drop-outs) in this redshift regime in relatively small fields of view, no direct detection of neutral hydrogen, via the redshifted 21-cm line, has yet been established. Such a direct detection is expected in the coming years, with ongoing surveys, and could open up the entire universe from $z\sim$6-200 for astrophysical and cosmological studies, opening not only the EoR, but also its preceding Cosmic Dawn ($z\sim$30-15) and possibly even the later phases of the Dark Ages ($z\sim$200-30). All currently ongoing experiments attempt statistical detections of the 21-cm signal during the EoR, with limited signal-to-noise. Direct imaging, except maybe on the largest (degree) scales at lower redshifts, as well as higher redshifts will remain out of reach. The Square Kilometre Array(SKA) will revolutionize the field, allowing direct imaging of neutral hydrogen from scales of arc-minutes to degrees over most of the redshift range $z\sim$6-28 with SKA1-LOW, and possibly even higher redshifts with the SKA2-LOW. In this SKA will be unique, and in parallel provide enormous potential of synergy with other upcoming facilities (e.g. JWST). GLEAM, the GaLactic and Extragalactic All-sky MWA survey, is a survey of the entire radio sky south of declination +25 deg at frequencies between 72 and 231 MHz, made with the Murchison Widefield Array (MWA) using a drift scan method that makes efficient use of the MWA's very large field-of-view. We present the observation details, imaging strategies and theoretical sensitivity for GLEAM. The survey ran for two years, the first year using 40 kHz frequency resolution and 0.5 s time resolution; the second year using 10 kHz frequency resolution and 2 s time resolution. The resulting image resolution and sensitivity depends on observing frequency, sky pointing and image weighting scheme. At 154 MHz the image resolution is approximately 2.5 x 2.2/cos(DEC+26.7) arcmin with sensitivity to structures up to ~10 deg in angular size. We provide tables to calculate the expected thermal noise for GLEAM mosaics depending on pointing and frequency and discuss limitations to achieving theoretical noise in Stokes I images. We discuss challenges, and their solutions, that arise for GLEAM including ionospheric effects on source positions and linearly polarised emission, and the instrumental polarisation effects inherent to the MWA's primary beam., Comment: 17 pages, 7 Figures, 4 tables. An excess in gamma-rays emanating from the galactic centre has recently been observed in the Fermi-LAT data. This signal can be interpreted as resulting from WIMP annihilation, with the spectrum well-fit by dark matter annihilating dominantly into either bottom-quark or Higgs pairs. Supersymmetric models provide a well-motivated framework to study the implications of this signal in these channels. With a neutralino dark matter candidate, the gamma-ray excess cannot be easily accommodated in the minimal supersymmetric model, which in any case requires tuning below the percent level to explain the observed Higgs mass. Instead we are naturally led to consider the next-to-minimal model with a singlet superfield. This not only allows for the annihilation channel into bottom-quark pairs to be implemented, but also provides new possibilities for annihilation into Higgs-pseudoscalar pairs. We show that the fit to the gamma-ray excess for the Higgs-pseudoscalar channel can be just as good as for annihilation into bottom-quark pairs. Moreover, in the parameter range of interest, the next-to-minimal supersymmetric model solves the mu-problem and can explain the 125 GeV Higgs mass with improved naturalness. We also consider an extension by adding a right-handed neutrino superfield with the right-handed sneutrino acting as a dark matter candidate. Interestingly, this allows for the annihilation into pseudoscalar pairs which also provide a good fit to the gamma-ray excess. Furthermore, in the case of a neutralino LSP, the late decay of a sneutrino NLSP can non-thermally produce the observed relic abundance. Finally, the WIMP annihilation into scalar pairs allows for the possibility of detecting the Higgs or pseudoscalar decay into two photons, providing a smoking-gun signal of the model., Comment: 45 pages, 18 figures, 5 tables; v2: references added, version published in PRD

Detection of 21~cm emission of HI from the epoch of reionization, at redshifts z>6, is limited primarily by foreground emission. We investigate the signatures of wide-field measurements and an all-sky foreground model using the delay spectrum technique that maps the measurements to foreground object locations through signal delays between antenna pairs. We demonstrate interferometric measurements are inherently sensitive to all scales, including the largest angular scales, owing to the nature of wide-field measurements. These wide-field effects are generic to all observations but antenna shapes impact their amplitudes substantially. A dish-shaped antenna yields the most desirable features from a foreground contamination viewpoint, relative to a dipole or a phased array. Comparing data from recent Murchison Widefield Array observations, we demonstrate that the foreground signatures that have the largest impact on the HI signal arise from power received far away from the primary field of view. We identify diffuse emission near the horizon as a significant contributing factor, even on wide antenna spacings that usually represent structures on small scales. For signals entering through the primary field of view, compact emission dominates the foreground contamination. These two mechanisms imprint a characteristic "pitchfork" signature on the "foreground wedge" in Fourier delay space. Based on these results, we propose that selective down-weighting of data based on antenna spacing and time can mitigate foreground contamination substantially by a factor ~100 with negligible loss of sensitivity., Comment: Published in ApJ

Impulsive radio bursts that are detectable across cosmological distances constitute extremely powerful probes of the ionized Inter-Galactic Medium (IGM), intergalactic magnetic fields, and the properties of space-time itself. Their dispersion measures (DMs) will enable us to detect the "missing" baryons in the low-redshift Universe and make the first measurements of the mean galaxy halo profile, a key parameter in models of galaxy formation and feedback. Impulsive bursts can be used as cosmic rulers at redshifts exceeding 2, and constrain the dark energy equation-of-state parameter, $w(z)$ at redshifts beyond those readily accessible by Type Ia SNe. Both of these goals are realisable with a sample of $\sim 10^4$ fast radio bursts (FRBs) whose positions are localized to within one arcsecond, sufficient to obtain host galaxy redshifts via optical follow-up. It is also hypothesised that gravitational wave events may emit coherent emission at frequencies probed by SKA1-LOW, and the localization of such events at cosmological distances would enable their use as cosmological standard sirens. To perform this science, such bursts must be localized to their specific host galaxies so that their redshifts may be obtained and compared against their dispersion measures, rotation measures, and scattering properties. The detection of six Fast Radio Bursts (FRBs) has recently been reported. FRBs are short duration ($\sim$ 1 ms), highly dispersed radio pulses from astronomical sources. The physical interpretation for the FRBs remains unclear but is thought to involve highly compact objects at cosmological distance. It has been suggested that a fraction of FRBs could be physically associated with gamma-ray bursts (GRBs). Recent radio observations of GRBs have reported the detection of two highly dispersed short duration radio pulses using a 12 m radio telescope at 1.4 GHz. Motivated by this result, we have performed a systematic and sensitive search for FRBs associated with GRBs. We have observed five GRBs at 2.3 GHz using a 26 m radio telescope located at the Mount Pleasant Radio Observatory, Hobart. The radio telescope was automated to rapidly respond to Gamma-ray Coordination Network notifications from the Swift satellite and slew to the GRB position within $\sim$ 140 s. The data were searched for pulses up to 5000 pc $\rm cm^{-3}$ in dispersion measure and pulse widths ranging from 640 $\rm \mu$s to 25.60 ms. We did not detect any events $\rm \geq 6 \sigma$. An in-depth statistical analysis of our data shows that events detected above $\rm 5 \sigma$ are consistent with thermal noise fluctuations only. A joint analysis of our data with previous experiments shows that previously claimed detections of FRBs from GRBs are unlikely to be astrophysical. For there to be a successful measurement of the 21 cm Epoch of Reionization (EoR) power spectrum, it is crucial that strong foreground contaminants be robustly suppressed. These foregrounds come from a variety of sources (such as Galactic synchrotron emission and extragalactic point sources), but almost all share the property of being spectrally smooth, and when viewed through the chromatic response of an interferometer, occupy a signature "wedge" region in cylindrical $k_\perp k_\parallel$ Fourier space. The complement of the foreground wedge is termed the "EoR window", and is expected to be mostly foreground-free, allowing clean measurements of the power spectrum. This paper is a sequel to a previous paper that established a rigorous mathematical framework for describing the foreground wedge and the EoR window. Here, we use our framework to explore statistical methods by which the EoR window can be enlarged, thereby increasing the sensitivity of a power spectrum measurement. We adapt the FKP approximation (commonly used in galaxy surveys) for 21 cm cosmology, and also compare the optimal quadratic estimator to simpler estimators that ignore covariances between different Fourier modes. The optimal quadratic estimator is found to suppress foregrounds by an extra factor of $\sim 10^5$ in power at the peripheries of the EoR window, boosting the detection of the cosmological signal from $12\sigma$ to $50\sigma$ at the midpoint of reionization in our fiducial models. If numerical issues can be finessed, decorrelation techniques allow the EoR window to be further enlarged, enabling measurements to be made deep within the foreground wedge.
