We study the capability of future measurements of the galaxy clustering power spectrum to probe departures from a power-law spectrum for primordial fluctuations. On considering the information from the galaxy clustering power spectrum up to quasi-linear scales, i.e. $k<0.1$ h Mpc$^{-1}$, we present forecasts for DESI, Euclid and SPHEREx in combination with CMB measurements. As examples of departures in the primordial power spectrum from a simple power-law, we consider four $Planck$ 2015 best-fits motivated by inflationary models with different breaking of the slow-roll approximation. These four representative models provide an improved fit to CMB temperature anisotropies, although not at statistical significant level. As for other extensions in the matter content of the simplest $\Lambda$CDM model, the complementarity of the information in the resulting matter power spectrum expected from these galaxy surveys and in the primordial power spectrum from CMB anisotropies can be effective in constraining cosmological models. We study the characteristics of the galaxy cluster samples expected from the European Space Agency's Euclid satellite and forecast constraints on cosmological parameters describing a variety of cosmological models. The method used in this paper, based on the Fisher Matrix approach, is the same one used to provide the constraints presented in the Euclid Red Book (Laureijs et al.2011). We describe the analytical approach to compute the selection function of the photometric and spectroscopic cluster surveys. Based on the photometric selection function, we forecast the constraints on a number of cosmological parameter sets corresponding to different extensions of the standard LambdaCDM model. The dynamical evolution of dark energy will be constrained to Delta w_0=0.03 and Delta w_a=0.2 with free curvature Omega_k, resulting in a (w_0,w_a) Figure of Merit (FoM) of 291. Including the Planck CMB covariance matrix improves the constraints to Delta w_0=0.02, Delta w_a=0.07 and a FoM=802. The amplitude of primordial non-Gaussianity, parametrised by f_NL, will be constrained to \Delta f_NL ~ 6.6 for the local shape scenario, from Euclid clusters alone. Using only Euclid clusters, the growth factor parameter \gamma, which signals deviations from GR, will be constrained to Delta \gamma=0.02, and the neutrino density parameter to Delta Omega_\nu=0.0013 (or Delta \sum m_\nu=0.01). We emphasise that knowledge of the observable--mass scaling relation will be crucial to constrain cosmological parameters from a cluster catalogue. The Euclid mission will have a clear advantage in this respect, thanks to its imaging and spectroscopic capabilities that will enable internal mass calibration from weak lensing and the dynamics of cluster galaxies. Recent N-body simulations have shown that Einasto radial profiles provide the most accurate description of dark matter halos. Predictions based on the traditional NFW functional form may fail to describe the structural properties of cosmic objects at the percent level required by precision cosmology. We computed the systematic errors expected for weak lensing analyses of clusters of galaxies if one wrongly models the lens density profile. Even though the NFW fits of observed tangential shear profiles can be excellent, viral masses and concentrations of very massive halos (>~ 10^{15}M_Sun/h) can be over- and underestimated by ~10 per cent, respectively. Misfitting effects also steepen the observed mass-concentration relation, as observed in multi-wavelength observations of galaxy groups and clusters. Future galaxy redshift surveys aim at probing the clustering of the cosmic large-scale structure with unprecedented accuracy, thus complementing cosmic microwave background experiments in the quest to deliver the most precise and accurate picture ever of our Universe. Analyses of such measurements are usually performed within the context of the so-called vanilla LCDM model - the six-parameter phenomenological model which, for instance, emerges from best fits against the recent data obtained by the Planck satellite. Here, we show that such an approach is prone to subtle systematics when the Gaussianity of primordial fluctuations is concerned. In particular, we demonstrate that, if we neglect even a tiny amount of primordial non-Gaussianity - fully consistent with current limits - we shall introduce spurious biases in the reconstruction of cosmological parameters. We recently developed a generalization of the halo model in order to describe the spatial clustering properties of each mass component in the Universe, including hot gas and stars. In this work we discuss the complementarity of the model with respect to a set of cosmological simulations including hydrodynamics of different kinds. We find that the mass fractions and density profiles measured in the simulations do not always succeed in reproducing the simulated matter power spectra, the reason being that the latter encode information from a much larger range in masses than that accessible to individually resolved structures. In other words, this halo model allows one to extract information on the growth of structures from the spatial clustering of matter, that is complementary with the information coming from the study of individual objects. We also find a number of directions for improvement of the present implementation of the model, depending on the specific application one has in mind. The most relevant one is the necessity for a scale dependence of the bias of the diffuse gas component, which will be interesting to test with future detections of the Warm-Hot Intergalactic Medium. This investigation confirms the possibility to gain information on the physics of galaxy and cluster formation by studying the clustering of mass, and our next work will consist of applying the halo model to use future high-precision cosmic shear surveys to this end., Comment: 20 pages, 9 figures. In this paper I generalize the halo model for the clustering of dark matter in order to produce the power spectra of the two main baryonic matter components in the Universe: stars and hot gas. As a natural extension, this can be also used to describe the clustering of all mass. According to the design of the halo model, the large-scale power spectra of the various matter components are physically connected with the distribution of each component within bound structures and thus, ultimately, with the complete set of physical processes that drive the formation of galaxies and galaxy clusters. Besides being practical for cosmological and parametric studies, the semi-analytic model presented here has also other advantages. Most importantly, it allows one to understand on physical ground what is the relative contribution of each matter component to the total clustering of mass as a function of scale, and thus it opens an interesting new window to infer the distribution of baryons through high precision cosmic shear measurements. This is particularly relevant for future wide-field photometric surveys such as Euclid. The scatter in the apparent magnitude of type Ia supernovae induced by stochastic gravitational lensing is highly dependent on the nonlinear growth of cosmological structure. In this paper, we show that such a dependence can potentially be employed to gain significant information about the mass clustering at small scales. While the mass clustering ultimately hinges on cosmology, here we demonstrate that, upon obtaining more precise observational measurements through future cosmological surveys, the lensing dispersion can very effectively be used to gain information on the poorly understood astrophysical aspects of structure formation, such as the clumpiness of dark matter halos and the importance of gas physics and star formation into shaping the large-scale structure. In order to illustrate this point we verify that even the tentative current measurements of the lensing dispersion performed on the Supernova Legacy Survey sample favor a scenario where virialized structures are somewhat less compact than predicted by $n-$body cosmological simulations. Moreover, we are also able to put lower limits on the slope of the concentration-mass relation. By artificially reducing the statistical observational error we argue that with forthcoming data the stochastic lensing dispersion will allow one to importantly improve constraints on the baryonic physics at work during the assembly of cosmological structure., Comment: 13 pages, 6 figures. I adopt a formalism previously developed by Catelan and Theuns (CT) in order to estimate the impact of primordial non-Gaussianity on the quasi-linear spin growth of cold dark matter protostructures. A variety of bispectrum shapes are considered, spanning the currently most popular early Universe models for the occurrence of non-Gaussian density fluctuations. In their original work, CT considered several other shapes, and suggested that only for one of those does the impact of non-Gaussianity seem to be perturbatively tractable. For that model, and on galactic scales, the next-to-linear non-Gaussian contribution to the angular momentum variance has an upper limit of $\sim 10%$ with respect to the linear one. I find that all the new models considered in this work can also be seemingly described via perturbation theory. Considering current bounds on $f_\mathrm{NL}$ for inflationary non-Gaussianity leads to the quasi-linear contribution being $\sim 10-20%$ of the linear one. This result motivates the systematic study of higher-order non-Gaussian corrections, in order to attain a comprehensive picture of how structure gravitational dynamics descends from the physics of the primordial Universe., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures. The origin of astrophysical magnetic fields observed in galaxies and clusters of galaxies is still unclear. One possibility is that primordial magnetic fields generated in the early Universe provide seeds that grow through compression and turbulence during structure formation. A cosmological magnetic field present prior to recombination would produce substantial matter clustering at intermediate/small scales, on top of the standard inflationary power spectrum. In this work we study the effect of this alteration on one particular cosmological observable, cosmic shear. We adopt the semi-analytic halo model in order to describe the non-linear clustering of matter, and feed it with the altered mass variance induced by primordial magnetic fields. We find that the convergence power spectrum is, as expected, substantially enhanced at intermediate/small angular scales, with the exact amplitude of the enhancement depending on the magnitude and power-law index of the magnetic field power spectrum. We use the predicted statistical errors for a future wide-field cosmic shear survey, on the model of the ESA Cosmic Vision mission \emph{Euclid}, in order to forecast constraints on the amplitude of primordial magnetic fields as a function of the spectral index. We find that the amplitude will be constrained at the level of $\sim 0.1$ nG for $n_B\sim -3$, and at the level of $\sim 10^{-7}$ nG for $n_B\sim 3$. The latter is at the same level of lower bounds coming from the secondary emission of gamma-ray sources, implying that for high spectral indices \emph{Euclid} will certainly be able to detect primordial magnetic fields, if they exist. The present study shows how large-scale structure surveys can be used for both understanding the origins of astrophysical magnetic fields and shedding new light on the physics of the pre-recombination Universe. We report 31 GHz CARMA observations of IDCS J1426.5+3508, an infrared-selected galaxy cluster at z = 1.75. A Sunyaev-Zel'dovich decrement is detected towards this cluster, indicating a total mass of M200 = (4.3 +/- 1.1) x 10^{14} Msun in agreement with the approximate X-ray mass of ~5 x 10^{14} Msun. IDCS J1426.5+3508 is by far the most distant cluster yet detected via the Sunyaev-Zel'dovich effect, and the most massive z >= 1.4 galaxy cluster found to date. Despite the mere ~1% probability of finding it in the 8.82 deg^2 IRAC Distant Cluster Survey, IDCS J1426.5+3508 is not completely unexpected in LCDM once the area of large, existing surveys is considered. IDCS J1426.5+3508 is, however, among the rarest, most extreme clusters ever discovered, and indeed is an evolutionary precursor to the most massive known clusters at all redshifts. We discuss how imminent, highly sensitive Sunyaev-Zel'dovich experiments will complement infrared techniques for statistical studies of the formation of the most massive galaxy clusters in the z > 1.5 Universe, including potential precursors to IDCS J1426.5+3508., Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures, Accepted to the Astrophysical Journal

The galaxy cluster IDCS J1426.5+3508 at z = 1.75 is the most massive galaxy cluster yet discovered at z > 1.4 and the first cluster at this epoch for which the Sunyaev-Zel'Dovich effect has been observed. In this paper we report on the discovery with HST imaging of a giant arc associated with this cluster. The curvature of the arc suggests that the lensing mass is nearly coincident with the brightest cluster galaxy, and the color is consistent with the arc being a star-forming galaxy. We compare the constraint on M200 based upon strong lensing with Sunyaev-Zel'Dovich results, finding that the two are consistent if the redshift of the arc is z > 3. Finally, we explore the cosmological implications of this system, considering the likelihood of the existence of a strongly lensing galaxy cluster at this epoch in an LCDM universe. While the existence of the cluster itself can potentially be accomodated if one considers the entire volume covered at this redshift by all current high-redshift cluster surveys, the existence of this strongly lensed galaxy greatly exacerbates the long-standing giant arc problem. For standard LCDM structure formation and observed background field galaxy counts this lens system should not exist. Specifically, there should be no giant arcs in the entire sky as bright in F814W as the observed arc for clusters at z \geq 1.75, and only \sim 0.3 as bright in F160W as the observed arc. If we relax the redshift constraint to consider all clusters at z \geq 1.5, the expected number of giant arcs rises to \sim15 in F160W, but the number of giant arcs of this brightness in F814W remains zero. These arc statistic results are independent of the mass of IDCS J1426.5+3508. We examine the cosmological constraining power of future large-scale weak lensing surveys on the model of \emph{Euclid}, with particular reference to primordial non-Gaussianity. Our analysis considers several different estimators of the projected matter power spectrum, based on both shear and flexion, for which we review the covariances and Fisher matrices. The bounds provided by cosmic shear alone for the local bispectrum shape, marginalized over $\sigma_8$, are at the level of $\Delta f_\mathrm{NL} \sim 100$. We consider three additional bispectrum shapes, for which the cosmic shear constraints range from $\Delta f_\mathrm{NL}\sim 340$ (equilateral shape) up to $\Delta f_\mathrm{NL}\sim 500$ (orthogonal shape). The competitiveness of cosmic flexion constraints against cosmic shear ones depends on the galaxy intrinsic flexion noise, that is still virtually unconstrained. Adopting the very high value that has been occasionally used in the literature results in the flexion contribution being basically negligible with respect to the shear one, and for realistic configurations the former does not improve significantly the constraining power of the latter. Since the flexion noise decreases with decreasing scale, by extending the analysis up to $\ell_\mathrm{max} = 20,000$ cosmic flexion, while being still subdominant, improves the shear constraints by $\sim 10%$ when added. However on such small scales the highly non-linear clustering of matter and the impact of baryonic physics make any error estimation uncertain. By considering lower, and possibly more realistic, values of the flexion intrinsic shape noise results in flexion constraining power being a factor of $\sim 2$ better than that of shear, and the bounds on $\sigma_8$ and $f_\mathrm{NL}$ being improved by a factor of $\sim 3$ upon their combination. I re-examine the relation between virial mass and concentration for groups and clusters of galaxies as measured in a number of recent works. As previously noted by several authors, low-mass clusters and groups of galaxies display systematically larger concentrations than simple prescriptions based on pure $n$-body simulations would predict. This implies an observed concentration-mass relation with a substantially larger slope/normalization than expected from theoretical investigations. Additionally, this conclusion seems to be quite independent on selection effects, holding for both lensing based and X-ray based cluster samples. In order to shed new light on this issue I employ a simple spherical halo model containing, in addition to dark matter, also stars and hot diffuse gas in proportions and with distributions in agreement with the most recent observations. Moreover, I include the contraction effect experienced by dark matter due to the cooling of baryons in the very central part of the structure itself. The resulting modified concentration-mass relation is steeper than the theoretical input one, because star formation is fractionally more efficient in low-mass objects. However, the effect is non-vanishing at all masses, thus resulting also in a larger normalization. Overall the new relation provides a better representation of the observed one for almost all catalogs considered in this work, although the specific details depend quite significantly on the baryon fraction prescription adopted. Anyhow, the same effect could also be produced by a redistribution of baryons within the structure. Finally I use this simple model to show how the estimated concentration of cosmic structures is expected to be overestimated as a function of the radial range covered by the analysis. {abridged} We study the imprints on the formation and evolution of cosmic structures of dynamical dark energy models, characterized by an oscillating equation of state. The redshift evolution of the equation of state parameter w(z) for dark energy is characterized by two parameters, describing the amplitude and the frequency of the oscillations. We consider six different oscillating dark energy models, each characterized by a different set of parameter values. Under the common assumption that dark energy is not clustering on the scales of interest, we study different aspects of cosmic structure formation. In particular, we self-consistently solve the spherical collapse problem. We then estimate the behavior of several cosmological observables, such as the linear growth factor, the Integrated Sachs-Wolfe (ISW) effect, the number counts of massive structures, and the matter and cosmic shear power spectra. We show that, independently of the amplitude and the frequency of the dark energy oscillations, none of the aforementioned observables show an oscillating behavior as a function of redshift. This is a consequence of the said observables' being integrals over some functions of the expansion rate over cosmic history. We also notice that deviations with respect to the expectations for a fiducial LambdaCDM cosmology are generically small, and in the majority of the cases distinguishing an oscillating dark energy model would be difficult. Exceptions to this conclusion are provided by the cosmic shear power spectrum, which for some of the models shows a difference at the level of \sim 10% over a wide range of angular scales, and the abundance of galaxy clusters, which is modified at the $\sim 10-20%$ level at $z \gtrsim 0.6$ for future wide weak lensing surveys., Comment: 18 pages, 15 figures, published on MNRAS

(abridged) We used a suite of numerical cosmological simulations in order to investigate the effect of gas cooling and star formation on the large scale matter distribution. The simulations follow the formation of cosmic structures in five different Dark Energy models: the fiducial $\Lambda$CDM cosmology and four models where the Dark Energy density is allowed to have a non-trivial redshift evolution. For each cosmology we have a control run with dark matter only, in order to allow a direct assessment of the impact of baryonic processes. We found that the power spectra of gas and stars, as well as the total matter power spectrum, are in qualitative agreement with the results of previous works in the framework of the fiducial model, although several quantitative differences exist. We used the halo model in order to investigate the backreaction of gas and stars on the dark matter distribution, finding that it is very well reproduced by increasing the average dark matter halo concentration by 17%, irrespective of the mass. Moving to model universes dominated by dynamical Dark Energy, it turns out that they introduce a specific signature on the power spectra of the various matter components, that is qualitatively independent of the exact cosmology considered. This generic shape is well captured by the halo model, however the finer details of the dark matter power spectrum can be precisely captured only at the cost of a few slight modifications to the ingredients entering the model. The backreaction of baryons onto the dark matter distribution works pretty much in the same way as in the reference $\Lambda$CDM model. Nonetheless, the increment in average concentration is less pronounced than in the fiducial model (only $\sim 10%$), in agreement with a series of other clues pointing toward the fact that star formation is less efficient when Dark Energy displays a dynamical evolution., Comment: 15 pages, 8 figures. (abridged) We explore the imprints of deviations from Gaussian primordial density fluctuations on the skeleton of the large-scale matter distribution as mapped through cosmological weak lensing. We computed the skeleton length of simulated effective convergence maps covering $\sim 35$ sq. deg each, extracted from a suite of cosmological $n-$body runs with different levels of local primordial non-Gaussianity. The latter is expected to alter the structure formation process with respect to the fiducial Gaussian scenario, and thus to leave a signature on the cosmic web. We found that alterations of the initial conditions consistently modify both the cumulative and the differential skeleton length, although the effect is generically smaller than the cosmic variance and depends on the smoothing of the map prior to the skeleton computation. Nevertheless, the qualitative shape of these deviations is rather similar to their primordial counterparts, implying that skeleton statistics retain good memory of the initial conditions. We performed a statistical analysis in order to find out at what Confidence Level primordial non-Gaussianity could be constrained by the skeleton test on cosmic shear maps of the size we adopted. At 68.3% Confidence Level we found an error on the measured level of primordial non-Gaussianity of $\Delta f_\mathrm{NL}\sim 300$, while at 90% Confidence Level it is of $\Delta f_\mathrm{NL}\sim 500$. While these values by themselves are not competitive with the current constraints, weak lensing maps larger than those used here would have a smaller field-to-field variance, and thus would likely lead to tighter constraints. A rough estimate indicates $\Delta f_\mathrm{NL} \sim$ a few tens at 68.3% Confidence Level for an all-sky weak lensing survey., Comment: 11 pages, 9 figures. Accepted for publication on MNRAS

A long-standing problem of strong lensing by galaxy clusters regards the observed high rate of giant gravitational arcs as compared to the predictions in the framework of the "standard" cosmological model. Recently, few other inconsistencies between theoretical expectations and observations have been claimed which regard the large size of the Einstein rings and the high concentrations of few clusters with strong lensing features. All of these problems consistently indicate that observed galaxy clusters may be gravitational lenses stronger than expected. We use clusters extracted from the MareNostrum Universe to build up mock catalogs of galaxy clusters selected through their X-ray flux. We use these objects to estimate the probability distributions of lensing cross sections, Einstein rings, and concentrations for the sample of 12 MACS clusters at $z>0.5$ presented in Ebeling et al. (2007) and discussed in Zitrin et al. (2010). We find that simulated clusters produce $\sim 50%$ less arcs than observed clusters do. The medians of the distributions of the Einstein ring sizes differ by $\sim 25%$ between simulations and observations. We estimate that, due to cluster triaxiality and orientation biases affecting the lenses with the largest cross sections, the concentrations of the individual MACS clusters inferred from the lensing analysis should be up to a factor of $\sim 2$ larger than expected from the $\Lambda$CDM model. The arc statistics, the Einstein ring, and the concentration problems in strong lensing clusters are mitigated but not solved on the basis of our analysis. Nevertheless, due to the lack of redshifts for most of the multiple image systems used for modeling the MACS clusters, the results of this work will need to be verified with additional data. We studied the effect of primordial non-Gaussianity with varied bispectrum shapes on the number counts of signal-to-noise peaks in wide field cosmic shear maps. The two cosmological contributions to this particular weak lensing statistic, namely the chance projection of Large Scale Structure and the occurrence of real, cluster-sized dark matter halos, have been modeled semi-analytically, thus allowing to easily introduce the effect of non-Gaussian initial conditions. We performed a Fisher matrix analysis by taking into account the full covariance of the peak counts in order to forecast the joint constraints on the level of primordial non-Gaussianity and the amplitude of the matter power spectrum that are expected by future wide field imaging surveys. We find that positive-skewed non-Gaussianity increases the number counts of cosmic shear peaks, more so at high signal-to-noise values, where the signal is mostly dominated by massive clusters as expected. The increment is at the level of ~1 for f_NL=10 and ~10 for f_NL=100 for a local shape of the primordial bispectrum, while different bispectrum shapes give generically a smaller effect. For a future survey on the model of the proposed ESA space mission Euclid and by avoiding the strong assumption of being capable to distinguish the weak lensing signal of galaxy clusters from chance projection of Large Scale Structures we forecasted a 1-sigma error on the level of non-Gaussianity of ~30-40 for the local and equilateral models, and of ~100-200 for the less explored enfolded and orthogonal bispectrum shapes., Comment: 13 pages, 8 figures, 1 table. We investigate the constraints on primordial non-Gaussianity with varied bispectrum shapes that can be derived from the power spectrum of galaxies and clusters of galaxies detected in future wide field optical/near-infrared surveys. Having in mind the proposed ESA space mission \emph{Euclid} as a specific example, we combine the spatial distribution of spectroscopically selected galaxies with that of weak lensing selected clusters. We use the physically motivated halo model in order to represent the correlation function of arbitrary tracers of the Large Scale Structure in the Universe. As naively expected, we find that galaxies are much more effective in jointly constrain the level of primordial non-Gaussianity $f_\mathrm{NL}$ and the amplitude of the matter power spectrum $\sigma_8$ than clusters of galaxies, due to the much lower abundance of the latter that is not adequately compensated by the larger effect on the power spectrum. Nevertheless, combination of the galaxy power spectrum with the cluster-galaxy cross spectrum can decrease the error on the determination of $f_\mathrm{NL}$ by up to a factor of $\sim 2$. This decrement is particularly evident for the less studied non-Gaussian bispectrum shapes, the so-called enfolded and the orthogonal ones. Setting constraints on these models can shed new light on various aspects of the physics of the early Universe, and it is hence of extreme importance. By combining the power spectra of clusters and galaxies with the cluster-galaxy cross spectrum we find constraints on primordial non-Gaussianity of the order $\Delta f_\mathrm{NL} \sim $ a few, competitive and possibly superior to future CMB experiments., Comment: 16 pages, 10 figures, 4 tables. Certain covariant theories of the modified Newtonian dynamics paradigm seem to require an additional hot dark matter (HDM) component - in the form of either heavy ordinary neutrinos or more recently light sterile neutrinos (SNs) with a mass around 11eV - to be relieved of problems ranging from cosmological scales down to intermediate ones relevant for galaxy clusters. Here we suggest using gravitational lensing by galaxy clusters to test such a marriage of neutrino HDM and modified gravity, adopting the framework of tensor-vector-scalar theory (TeVeS). Unlike conventional cold dark matter (CDM), such HDM is subject to strong phase-space constraints, which allows one to check cluster lens models inferred within the modified framework for consistency. Since the considered HDM particles cannot collapse into arbitrarily dense clumps and only form structures well above the galactic scale, systems which indicate the need for dark substructure are of particular interest. As a first example, we study the cluster lens Abell 2390 and its impressive straight arc with the help of numerical simulations. Based on our results, we outline a general and systematic approach to model cluster lenses in TeVeS which significantly reduces the calculation complexity. We further consider a simple bimodal lens configuration, capable of producing the straight arc, to demonstrate our approach. We find that such a model is marginally consistent with the hypothesis of 11eV SNs. Future work including more detailed and realistic lens models may further constrain the necessary SN distribution and help to conclusively assess this point. The strong lensing events that are observed in compact clusters of galaxies can, both statistically and individually, return important clues about the structural properties of the most massive structures in the Universe. Substantial work is ongoing in order to understand the degree of similarity between the lensing cluster population and the population of clusters as a whole, with members of the former being likely more massive, compact, and substructured than members of the latter. In this work we exploit synthetic clusters extracted from the {\sc MareNostrum Universe} cosmological simulation in order to estimate the correlation between the strong lensing efficiency and other bulk properties of lensing clusters, such as the virial mass and the bolometric X-ray luminosity. We found that a positive correlation exist between all these quantities, with the substantial scatter being smaller for the luminosity-cross section relation. We additionally used the relation between the lensing efficiency and the virial mass in order to construct a synthetic optical depth that agrees well with the true one, while being extremely faster to be evaluated. We finally estimated what fraction of the total giant arc abundance is recovered when galaxy clusters are selected according to their dynamical activity or their X-ray luminosity. Our results show that there is a high probability for high-redshift strong lensing clusters to be substantially far away from dynamical equilibrium, and that $30-40\%$ of the total amount of giant arcs are lost if looking only at very X-ray luminous objects., Comment: 15 pages, 10 figures. Strong lensing is one of the most direct probes of the mass distribution in the inner regions of galaxy clusters. It can be used to constrain the density profiles and to measure the mass of the lenses. Moreover, the abundance of strong lensing events can be used to constrain the structure formation and the cosmological parameters through the so-called "arc-statistics" approach. However, several issues related to the usage of strong lensing clusters in cosmological applications are still controversial, leading to the suspect that several biases may affect this very peculiar class of objects. With this study we aim at better understanding the properties of galaxy clusters which can potentially act as strong lenses. We do so by investigating the properties of a large sample of galaxy clusters extracted from the N-body/hydrodynamical simulation MareNostrum Universe. We explore the correlation between the cross section for lensing and many properties of clusters, like the mass, the three-dimensional and projected shapes, their concentrations, the X-ray luminosity and the dynamical activity. We find that the probability of strong alignments between the major axes of the lenses and the line of sight is a growing function of the lensing cross section. In projection, the strong lenses appear rounder within R200, but we find that their cores tend to be more elliptical as the lensing cross section increases. We also find that the cluster concentrations estimated from the projected density profiles tend to be biased high. The X-ray luminosity of strong lensing clusters is higher than that of normal lenses of similar mass and redshift. This is particular significant for the least massive lenses. Finally, we find that the strongest lenses generally exhibit an excess of kinetic energy within the virial radius, indicating that they are more dynamically active than usual clusters., Comment: 22 pages, 18 figures, accepted for publication on A&A

We present forecasts for constraints on deviations from Gaussian distribution of primordial density perturbations from future X-ray surveys of galaxy clusters. Our analysis is based on computing the Fisher-Matrix for number counts and large-scale power spectrum of clusters. We consider a survey with high-sensitivity and wide-area to detect about 2.5 x 10^5 extended sources. Based on the self-calibration approach, and including Planck priors in our analysis, we constrain 9 cosmological parameters and 4 nuisance parameters, which define the relation between cluster mass and X-ray flux. Because of the scale dependence of large-scale bias induced by local-shape non-Gaussianity, we find that the power spectrum provides strong constraints on the non-Gaussianity f_nl parameter, which complement the stringent constraints on the power spectrum normalization, \sigma_8, from the number counts. To quantify the joint constraints on theese two parameters, that specify the timing of structure formation for a fixed background expansion, we define the figure-of-merit FoM_SFT = (det[Cov(sigma_8,f_nl)])^{-1/2}. We find that our surveys constrain deviations from Gaussianity with a precision of \Delta f_nl~10 at 1 \sigma confidence level, with FoM_SFT~39. We point out that constraints on f_nl are weakly sensitive to the uncertainties in the knowledge of nuisance parameters. As an application of non-Gaussian constraints from available data, we analyse the impact of positive skewness on the occurrence of XMMU-J2235, a massive distant cluster discovered at z~1.4. We confirm that in a WMAP-7 Gaussian Lambda CDM cosmology, within the survey volume, ~5x10^{-3} objects like this are expected to be found: to increase this probability by a factor of at least 10, one needs to evade either the available constraints on f_nl or sigma_8., Comment: 16 pages, 13 figures, MNRAS (Accepted)

(abridged) We explore the statistical properties of non-linear cosmic structures in a flat $\Lambda$CDM cosmology in which the index of the primordial power spectrum for scalar perturbations is allowed to depend on the scale. Within the inflationary paradigm, the running of the scalar spectral index can be related to the properties of the inflaton potential, and it is hence of critical importance to test it with all kinds of observations, which cover the linear and non-linear regime of gravitational instability. We focus on the amount of running $\alpha_{\mathrm{S},0}$ allowed by an updated combination of CMB anisotropy data and the 2dF Galaxy Redshift Survey. Our analysis constrains $\alpha_{\mathrm{S},0} = -0.051^{+0.047}_{-0.053}$ $(-0.034^{+0.039}_{-0.040})$ at 95% Confidence Level when (not) taking into account primordial gravitational waves in a ratio as predicted by canonical single field inflation, in agreement with other works. For the cosmological models best fitting the data both with and without running we studied the abundance of galaxy clusters and of rare objects, the halo bias, the concentration of dark matter halos, the Baryon Acoustic Oscillation, the power spectrum of cosmic shear, and the Integrated Sachs-Wolfe effect. We find that counting galaxy clusters in future X-ray and Sunyaev-Zel'dovich surveys could discriminate between the two models, more so if broad redshift information about the cluster samples will be available. Likewise, measurements of the power spectrum of cosmological weak lensing as performed by planned all-sky optical surveys such as EUCLID could detect a running of the primordial spectral index, provided the uncertainties about the source redshift distribution and the underlying matter power spectrum are well under control., Comment: 17 pages, 14 figures, 4 tables. We computed the power spectrum of weak cosmic shear in models with non-Gaussian primordial density fluctuations. Cosmological initial conditions deviating from Gaussianity have recently attracted much attention in the literature, especially with respect to their effect on the formation of non-linear structures and because of the bounds that they can put on the inflationary epoch. The fully non-linear matter power spectrum was evaluated with the use of the physically motivated, semi-analytic halo model, where the mass function and linear halo bias were suitably corrected for non-Gaussian cosmologies. In agreement with previous work, we found that a level of non-Gaussianity compatible with CMB bounds and with positive skewness produces an increase in power of the order of a few percent at intermediate scales. We then used the matter power spectrum, together with observationally motivated background source redshift distributions in order to compute the cosmological weak lensing power spectrum. We found that the degree of deviation from the power spectrum of the reference Gaussian model is small compared to the statistical error expected from even future weak lensing surveys. However, summing the signal over a large range of multipoles can beat down the noise, bringing to a significant detection of non-Gaussianity at the level of $|f_\mathrm{NL}| \simeq $ few tens, when all other cosmological parameters are held fixed. Finally, we have shown that the constraints on the level of non-Gaussianity can be improved by $\sim 20%$ with the use of weak lensing tomography., Comment: 15 pages, 10 figures. Accepted by MNRAS

We predict the abundance of giant gravitational arcs produced by submillimeter galaxies (SMGs) lensed by foreground galaxy clusters, both at radio and submm wavelengths. The galaxy cluster population is modeled in a realistic way with the use of semi-analytic merger trees, while the density profiles of individual deflectors take into account ellipticity and substructures. The adopted typical size of the radio and submm emitting regions of SMGs is based on current radio/CO observations and the FIR-radio correlation. The source redshift distribution has been modeled using three different functions (based on spectroscopic/photometric redshift measurements and a simple evolutionary model) to quantify the effect of a high redshift tail on the number of arcs. The source number counts are compatible with currently available observations, and were suitably distorted to take into account the lensing magnification bias. We present tables and plots for the numbers of radio and submm arcs produced by SMGs as a function of surface brightness, useful for the planning of future surveys aimed at arc statistics studies. They show that e.g., the detection of several hundred submm arcs on the whole sky with a signal-to-noise ratio of at least 5 requires a sensitivity of 1 mJy arcsec$^{-2}$ at $850 \mu$m. Approximately the same number of radio arcs should be detected with the same signal-to-noise ratio with a surface brightness threshold of $20 \mu$Jy arcsec$^{-2}$ at 1.4 GHz.
