We present wide-field mapping at 850 $\mu$m and 450 $\mu$m of the $z$ = 2.85 protocluster in the HS1549$+$19 field using the Submillimetre Common User Bolometer Array 2 (SCUBA-2). Spectroscopic follow-up of 18 bright sources selected at 850 $\mu$m, using the Nothern Extended Millimeter Array (NOEMA) and Atacama Large Millimeter Array (ALMA), confirms the majority lies near $z$ $\sim$ 2.85 and are likely members of the structure. Interpreting the spectroscopic redshifts as distance measurements, we find that the SMGs span 90 Mpc$^2$ in the plane of the sky and demarcate a 4100 Mpc$^3$ "pancake"-shaped structure in three dimensions. We find that the high star-formation rates (SFRs) of these SMGs result in a total SFR of 20,000 M$_\odot$ yr$^{-1}$ only from the brightest galaxies in the protocluster. These rapidly star-forming SMGs can be interpreted as massive galaxies growing rapidly at large cluster-centric distances before collapsing into a virialized structure. We find that the SMGs trace the Lyman-$\alpha$ surface density profile. Comparison with simulations suggests that HS1549$+$19 could be building a structure comparable to the most massive clusters in the present-day Universe.

We present an analysis of the JWST NIRCam and MIRI morphological properties of 80 massive ($\log_{10}(M_\ast[M_{\odot}])$=11.2$\pm$0.1) dusty star-forming galaxies at $z$$=$2.7$^{+1.2}_{-0.7}$, identified as sub-millimetre galaxies (SMGs) by ALMA, that have been observed as part of the JWST PRIMER project. To compare the structure of these massive, active galaxies to more typical star-forming galaxies, we define a sample of 850 field galaxies with matched redshifts and specific star formation rates. We identify 20$\pm$5% of the SMGs as candidate late-stage major mergers, a further 40$\pm$10% as potential minor mergers and 40$\pm$10% which have comparatively undisturbed disk-like morphologies, with no obvious massive neighbours on $\lesssim$20-30kpc (projected) scales. These rates are comparable to those for the field sample and indicate that the majority of the sub-millimetre-detected galaxies are not late-stage major mergers, but have interaction rates similar to the less-active population at $z$$\sim$2-3. Through a multi-wavelength morphological analysis, we establish that SMGs have comparable near-infrared sizes to the less active population, but exhibit lower S\'ersic indices, consistent with bulge-less disks and have more structured morphologies at 2$\mu$m relative to 4$\mu$m. We find evidence for dust reddening as the origin of the morphological differences between the populations, identifying a strong correlation between the F200W$-$F444W pixel colour and the 870$\mu$m surface brightness. We conclude that SMGs and less active galaxies at the same epochs share a common disk-like structure, but the weaker bulge components of the SMGs results in a lower dynamical stability. Consequently, instabilities triggered either secularly or by minor external perturbations result in higher levels of activity (and dust content) in SMGs compared to typical star-forming galaxies. We present 20,567 Ly$\alpha$ emitters (LAEs) at $z=2.2-7.3$ that are photometrically identified by the SILVERRUSH program in a large survey area up to 25 deg$^2$ with deep images of five broadband filters (grizy) and seven narrowband filters targeting Ly$\alpha$ lines at $z=2.2$, $3.3$, $4.9$, $5.7$, $6.6$, $7.0$, and $7.3$ taken by the Hyper Suprime-Cam Subaru Strategic Program (HSC-SSP) and the Cosmic HydrOgen Reionization Unveiled with Subaru (CHORUS) survey. We select secure $>5\sigma$ sources showing narrowband color excesses via Ly$\alpha$ break screening, taking into account the spatial inhomogeneity of limiting magnitudes. After removing spurious sources by careful masking and visual inspection of coadded and multi-epoch images obtained over the 7 yr of the surveys, we construct LAE samples consisting of 6995, 4641, 726, 6124, 2058, 18, and 5 LAEs at $z=2.2$, 3.3, 4.9, 5.7, 6.6, 7.0, and 7.3, respectively, although the $z=7.3$ candidates are tentative. Our LAE catalogs contain 241 spectroscopically confirmed LAEs at the expected redshifts from previous work. We demonstrate that the number counts of our LAEs are consistent with previous studies with similar LAE selection criteria. We present UV and Ly$\alpha$ radial surface brightness (SB) profiles of Ly$\alpha$ emitters (LAEs) at $z=2.84$ detected with the Hyper Suprime-Cam (HSC) on the Subaru Telescope. The depth of our data, together with the wide field coverage including a protocluster, enable us to study the dependence of Ly$\alpha$ halos (LAHs) on various galaxy properties, including Mpc-scale environments. UV and Ly$\alpha$ images of 3490 LAEs are extracted, and stacking the images yields SB sensitivity of $\sim1\times10^{-20}\mathrm{~erg~s^{-1}~cm^{-2}~arcsec^{-2}}$ in Ly$\alpha$, reaching the expected level of optically thick gas illuminated by the UV background at $z\sim3$. Fitting of the two-component exponential function gives the scale-lengths of $1.56\pm0.01$ and $10.4\pm0.3$ pkpc. Dividing the sample according to their photometric properties, we find that while the dependence of halo scale-length on environment outside of the protocluster core is not clear, LAEs in the central regions of protoclusters appear to have very large LAHs which could be caused by combined effects of source overlapping and diffuse Ly$\alpha$ emission from cool intergalactic gas permeating the forming protocluster core irradiated by active members. For the first time, we identify ``UV halos'' around bright LAEs which are probably due to a few lower-mass satellite galaxies. Through comparison with recent numerical simulations, we conclude that, while scattered Ly$\alpha$ photons from the host galaxies are dominant, star formation in satellites evidently contributes to LAHs, and that fluorescent Ly$\alpha$ emission may be boosted within protocluster cores at cosmic noon and/or near bright QSOs., Comment: 29 pages, 20 Figures, Accepted for publication in ApJ

The James Webb Space Telescope Time-Domain Field (JWST-TDF) is an $\sim$14$'$ diameter field near the North Ecliptic Pole that will be targeted by one of the JWST Guaranteed Time Observations programs. Here, we describe our James Clerk Maxwell Telescope SCUBA-2 850 $\mu$m imaging of the JWST-TDF and present the submillimeter source catalog and properties. We also present a catalog of radio sources from Karl J. Jansky Very Large Array 3 GHz observations of the field. These observations were obtained to aid JWST's study of the dust-obscured galaxies that contribute significantly to the cosmic star formation at high redshifts. Our deep 850 $\mu$m map covers the JWST TDF at a noise level of $\sigma_{850}$ = 1.0 mJy beam$^{-1}$, detecting 83/31 sources in the main/supplementary signal-to-noise ratio (S/N $>$ 4 / S/N = 3.5 - 4) sample respectively. The 3 GHz observations cover a 24$'$ diameter field with a 1 $\sigma$ noise of 1$\mu$Jy beam$^{-1}$ at a 0$.\!\!^{\prime\prime}$7 FWHM. We identified eighty-five 3 GHz counterparts to sixty-six 850 $\mu$m sources and then matched these with multiwavelength data from the optical to the mid-infrared wave bands. We performed spectral energy distribution fitting for 61 submillimeter galaxies (SMGs) matched with optical/near-infrared data, and found that SMGs at S/N $>$ 4 have a median value of $z_{phot} = $2.22 $\pm$ 0.12, star formation rates of 300 $\pm$ 40 M$_{\odot}\,{\rm yr^{-1}}$ (Chabrier initial mass function), and typical cold dust masses of 5.9 $\pm$ 0.7 $ \times$ 10$^{8} $M$_{\odot}$, in line with bright SMGs from other surveys. The large cold dust masses indicate correspondingly large cool gas masses, which we suggest are a key factor necessary to drive the high star formation rates seen in this population, Comment: 22 pages, 18 figures (1 extended figure and the full catalog are included), Published in ApJS

We report the detection of an ionized gas outflow from an $X$-ray active galactic nucleus (AGN) hosted in a massive quiescent galaxy in a protocluster at $z=3.09$ (J221737.29+001823.4). It is a type-2 QSO with broad ($W_{80}>1000$ km s$^{-1}$) and strong ($\log (L_{\rm [OIII]}$ / erg s$^{-1})\approx43.4$) [O {\footnotesize III}]$\lambda\lambda$4959,5007 emission lines detected by slit spectroscopy in three-position angles using Multi-Object Infra-Red Camera and Spectrograph (MOIRCS) on the Subaru telescope and the Multi-Object Spectrometer For Infra-Red Exploration (MOSFIRE) on the Keck-I telescope. In the all slit directions, [O {\footnotesize III}] emission is extended to $\sim15$ physical kpc and indicates a powerful outflow spreading over the host galaxy. The inferred ionized gas mass outflow rate is $\rm 22\pm3~M_{\odot}~yr^{-1}$. Although it is a radio source, according to the line diagnostics using H$\beta$, [O {\footnotesize II}], and [O {\footnotesize III}], photoionization by the central QSO is likely the dominant ionization mechanism rather than shocks caused by radio jets. On the other hand, the spectral energy distribution of the host galaxy is well characterized as a quiescent galaxy that has shut down star formation by several hundred Myr ago. Our results suggest a scenario that QSOs are powered after the shut-down of the star formation and help to complete the quenching of massive quiescent galaxies at high redshift., Comment: 18 pages 6 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

We present observations of [NII] 205 $\mu$m, [OIII] 88 $\mu$m and dust emission in a strongly-lensed, submillimeter galaxy (SMG) at $z=6.0$, G09.83808, with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA). Both [NII] and [OIII] line emissions are detected at $>12\sigma$ in the 0.8$"$-resolution maps. Lens modeling indicates that the spatial distribution of the dust continuum emission is well characterized by a compact disk with an effective radius of 0.64$\pm$0.02 kpc and a high infrared surface brightness of $\Sigma_\mathrm{IR}=(1.8\pm0.3)\times10^{12}~L_\odot$ kpc$^{-2}$. This result supports that G09.83808 is the progenitors of compact quiescent galaxies at $z\sim4$, where the majority of its stars are expected to be formed through a strong and short burst of star formation. G09.83808 and other lensed SMGs show a decreasing trend of the [NII] line to infrared luminosity ratio with increasing continuum flux density ratio between 63 $\mu$m and 158 $\mu$m, as seen in local luminous infrared galaxies (LIRGs). The decreasing trend can be reproduced by photoionization models with increasing ionization parameters. Furthermore, by combining the [NII]/[OIII] luminosity ratio with far-infrared continuum flux density ratio in G09.83808, we infer that the gas phase metallicity is already $Z\approx 0.5-0.7~Z_\odot$. We conducted a deep spectroscopic survey, named SSA22-HIT, in the SSA22 field with the DEep Imaging MultiObject Spectrograph (DEIMOS) on the Keck telescope, designed to tomographically map high-z HI gas through analysis of Lya absorption in background galaxies' spectra. In total, 198 galaxies were spectroscopically confirmed at 2.5 < z < 6 with a few low-z exceptions in the 26 x 15 arcmin^2 area, of which 148 were newly determined in this study. Our redshift measurements were merged with previously confirmed redshifts available in the 34 x 27 arcmin^2 area of the SSA22 field. This compiled catalog containing 730 galaxies of various types at z > 2 is useful for various applications, and it is made publicly available. Our SSA22-HIT survey has increased by approximately twice the number of spectroscopic redshifts of sources at z > 3.2 in the observed field. From a comparison with publicly available redshift catalogs, we show that our compiled redshift catalog in the SSA22 field is comparable to those among major extragalactic survey fields in terms of a combination of wide area and high surface number density of objects at z > 2. About 40 % of the spectroscopically confirmed objects in SSA22-HIT show reasonable quality of spectra in the wavelengths shorter than Lya when a sufficient amount of smoothing is adopted. We present observations of a giant Lyman-alpha blob in the SSA22 proto-cluster at z=3.1, SSA22-LAB1, taken with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA). Dust continuum, along with [C II]158um, and CO(4-3) line emission have been detected in LAB1, showing complex morphology and kinematics across a ~100 kpc central region. Seven galaxies at z=3.0987-3.1016 in the surroundings are identified in [C II] and dust continuum emission, with two of them potential companions or tidal structures associated with the most massive galaxies. Spatially resolved [C II] and infrared luminosity ratios for the widely distributed media (L[C II]/LIR~0.01-0.001) suggest that the observed extended interstellar media are likely to have originated from star-formation activity and the contribution from shocked gas is probably not dominant. LAB1 is found to harbour a total molecular gas mass Mmol=(8.7+/-2.0)e+10 Msun, concentrated in the core region of the Ly-alpha-emitting area. While (primarily obscured) star-formation activity in the LAB1 core is one of the most plausible power sources for the Ly-alpha emission, multiple major-mergers found in the core may also play a role in making LAB1 exceptionally bright and extended in Ly-alpha as a result of cooling radiation induced by gravitational interactions., Comment: 23 pages, 11 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

We report a massive quiescent galaxy at $z_{\rm spec}=3.0922^{+0.008}_{-0.004}$ spectroscopically confirmed at a protocluster in the SSA22 field by detecting the Balmer and Ca {\footnotesize II} absorption features with multi-object spectrometer for infrared exploration (MOSFIRE) on the Keck I telescope. This is the most distant quiescent galaxy confirmed in a protocluster to date. We fit the optical to mid-infrared photometry and spectrum simultaneously with spectral energy distribution (SED) models of parametric and nonparametric star formation histories (SFH). Both models fit the observed SED well and confirm that this object is a massive quiescent galaxy with the stellar mass of $\log(\rm M_{\star}/M_{\odot}) = 11.26^{+0.03}_{-0.04}$ and $11.54^{+0.03}_{-0.00}$, and star formation rate of $\rm SFR/M_{\odot}~yr^{-1} <0.3$ and $=0.01^{+0.03}_{-0.01}$ for parametric and nonparametric models, respectively. The SFH from the former modeling is described as an instantaneous starburst while that of the latter modeling is longer-lived but both models agree with a sudden quenching of the star formation at $\sim0.6$ Gyr ago. This massive quiescent galaxy is confirmed in an extremely dense group of galaxies predicted as a progenitor of a brightest cluster galaxy formed via multiple mergers in cosmological numerical simulations. We newly find three plausible [O III]$\lambda$5007 emitters at $3.0791\leq z_{\rm spec}\leq3.0833$ happened to be detected around the target. Two of them just between the target and its nearest massive galaxy are possible evidence of their interactions. We report on a spectroscopic program to search for dual quasars using Subaru Hyper Suprime-Cam (HSC) images of SDSS quasars which represent an important stage during galaxy mergers. Using Subaru/FOCAS and Gemini-N/GMOS, we identify three new physically associated quasar pairs having projected separations less than 20 kpc, out of 26 observed candidates. These include the discovery of the highest redshift ($z=3.1$) quasar pair with a separation $<$ 10 kpc. Based on the sample acquired to date, the success rate of identifying physically associated dual quasars is $19\%$ when excluding stars based on their HSC colors. Using the full sample of six spectroscopically confirmed dual quasars, we find that the black holes in these systems have black hole masses ($M_{BH} \sim 10^{8-9}M_{\odot}$) similar to single SDSS quasars as well as their bolometric luminosities and Eddington ratios. We measure the stellar mass of their host galaxies based on 2D image decomposition of the five-band ($grizy$) optical emission and assess the mass relation between supermassive black holes (SMBHs) and their hosts. Dual SMBHs appear to have elevated masses relative to their host galaxies. Thus mergers may not necessarily align such systems onto the local mass relation, as suggested by the Horizon-AGN simulation. This study suggests that dual luminous quasars are triggered prior to the final coalescence of the two SMBHs, resulting in early mass growth of the black holes relative to their host galaxies., Comment: 36 pages, 21 figures, 4 tables

We present new spectroscopic observations of Lyman-$\alpha$ (Ly$\alpha$) Blob 2 ($z \sim$ 3.1). We observed extended Ly$\alpha$ emission in three distinct regions, where the highest Ly$\alpha$ surface brightness (SB) center is far away from the known continuum sources. We searched through the MOSFIRE slits that cover the high Ly$\alpha$ SB regions, but were unable to detect any significant nebular emission near the highest SB center. We further mapped the flux ratio of the blue peak to the red peak and found it is anti-correlated with Ly$\alpha$ SB with a power-law index of $\sim$ -0.4. We used radiative transfer models with both multiphase, clumpy and shell geometries and successfully reproduced the diverse Ly$\alpha$ morphologies. We found that most spectra suggest outflow-dominated kinematics, while 4/15 spectra imply inflows. A significant correlation exists between parameter pairs, and the multiphase, clumpy model may alleviate previously reported discrepancies. We also modeled Ly$\alpha$ spectra at different positions simultaneously and found that the variation of the inferred clump outflow velocities can be approximately explained by line-of-sight projection effects. Our results support the `central powering + scattering' scenario, i.e. the Ly$\alpha$ photons are generated by a central powering source and then scatter with outflowing, multiphase HI gas while propagating outwards. The infalling of cool gas near the blob outskirts shapes the observed blue-dominated Ly$\alpha$ profiles, but its energy contribution to the total Ly$\alpha$ luminosity is less than 10%, i.e. minor compared to the photo-ionization by star-forming galaxies and/or AGNs., Comment: v1: 13 pages, 6 figures + Appendix. We present results from a new cosmological hydrodynamics simulation campaign of protocluster (PC) regions, FOREVER22: FORmation and EVolution of galaxies in Extremely-overdense Regions motivated by SSA22. The simulations cover a wide range of cosmological scales using three different zoom set-ups in a parent volume of $(714.2~\rm cMpc)^{3}$: PCR (Proto-Cluster Region; $V= (28.6~{\rm cMpc})^{3} $, SPH particle mass, $m_{\rm{SPH}} = 4.1 \times 10^{6}~\rm M_{\odot}$ and final redshift, $z_{\rm end}=2.0$), BCG (Brightest proto-Cluster Galaxy; $V \sim (10~{\rm cMpc})^{3} $, $m_{\rm SPH} = 5.0\times10^{5}~\rm M_{\odot}$ and $z_{\rm end}=4.0$ ), and First ( $V \sim (3~{\rm cMpc})^{3} $, $m_{\rm SPH} = 7.9 \times 10^{3}~\rm M_{\odot}$ and $z_{\rm end}=9.5$) runs, that allow to focus on different aspects of galaxy formation. In the PCR runs, we follow 10 PCs, each harbouring 1 - 4 SMBHs with $M_{\rm BH} \ge 10^{9}~\rm M_{\odot}$. One of the PC cores shows a spatially close arrangement of seven starburst galaxies with ${\rm SFR} \gtrsim 100~\rm M_{\odot}~yr^{-1}$ each, that are dust-obscured and would appear as submillimeter galaxies with flux $\gtrsim 1~$ mJy at $1.1~ \rm mm$ in observations. The BCG runs show that the total SFRs of haloes hosting BCGs are affected by AGN feedback, but exceed $1000~\rm M_{\odot}~yr^{-1}$ at $z \lesssim 6$. The First runs resolve mini-haloes hosting population (Pop) III stars and we show that, in PC regions, the dominant stellar population changes from Pop III to Pop II at $z \gtrsim 20$, and the first galaxies with ${\rm SFR} \gtrsim 18~\rm M_{\odot}~yr^{-1}$ form at $z \sim 10$. These can be prime targets for future observations with the James Webb Space Telescope. We report the discovery of a 10 comoving Mpc-scale structure traced by massive submillimeter galaxies (SMGs) at z~4.6. These galaxies are selected from an emission line search of ALMA Band 7 observations targeting 184 luminous submillimeter sources ($S_{850\mu{\rm m}}\geq$ 6.2 mJy) across 1.6 degrees$^2$ in the COSMOS field. We identify four [CII] emitting SMGs and two probable [CII] emitting SMG candidates at z=4.60-4.64 with velocity-integrated signal-to-noise ratio of SNR>8. Four of the six emitters are near-infrared blank SMGs. After excluding one SMG whose emission line is falling at the edge of the spectral window, all galaxies show clear velocity gradients along the major axes that are consistent with rotating gas disks. The estimated rotation velocities of the disks are 330-550 km s$^{-1}$ and the inferred host dark-matter halo masses are ~2-8 $\times$ 10$^{12}$M$_{\odot}$. From their estimated halo masses and [CII] luminosity function, we suggest that these galaxies have a high (50-100%) duty cycle and high (~0.1) baryon conversion efficiency (SFR relative to baryon accretion rate), and that they contribute $\simeq$2% to the total star-formation rate density at z=4.6. These SMGs are concentrated within just 0.3% of the full survey volume, suggesting they are strongly clustered. The extent of this structure and the individual halo masses suggest that these SMGs will likely evolve into members of a ~10$^{15}$M$_{\odot}$ cluster at z=0. This survey reveals synchronized dusty starburst in massive halos at z>4, which could be driven by mergers or fed by smooth gas accretion.

To determine the dominant sources for cosmic reionization, the evolution history of the global ionizing fraction, and the topology of the ionized regions, we have conducted a deep imaging survey using four narrow-band (NB) and one intermediate-band (IB) filters on the Subaru/Hyper Suprime-Cam (HSC), called Cosmic HydrOgen Reionization Unveiled with Subaru (CHORUS). The central wavelengths and full-widths-at-half-maximum of the CHORUS filters are, respectively, 386.2 nm and 5.5 nm for NB387, 526.0 nm and 7.9 nm for NB527, 717.1 nm and 11.1 nm for NB718, 946.2 nm and 33.0 nm for IB945, and 971.2 nm and 11.2 nm for NB973. This combination, including NB921 (921.5 nm and 13.5 nm) from the Subaru Strategic Program with HSC (HSC SSP), are carefully designed, as if they were playing a chorus, to observe multiple spectral features simultaneously, such as Lyman continuum, Ly$\alpha$, C~{\sc iv}, and He~{\sc ii} for $z=2$--$7$. The observing field is the same as that of the deepest footprint of the HSC SSP in the COSMOS field and its effective area is about 1.6 deg$^2$. Here, we present an overview of the CHORUS project, which includes descriptions of the filter design philosophy, observations and data reduction, multiband photometric catalogs, assessments of the imaging quality, measurements of the number counts, and example use cases of the data. The unique combination of superb spatial resolution, wide-area coverage, and deep depth of the optical imaging from the Hyper Suprime-Cam (HSC) Subaru Strategic Program is utilized to search for dual quasar candidates. Using an automated image analysis routine on 34,476 known SDSS quasars, we identify those with two (or more) distinct optical point sources in HSC images covering 796 deg^2. We find 421 candidates out to a redshift of 4.5 of which one hundred or so are more likely after filtering out contaminating stars. Angular separations of 0.6 - 4.0" correspond to projected separations of 3 - 30 kpc, a range relatively unexplored for population studies of luminous dual quasars. Using Keck-I/LRIS and Gemini-N/NIFS, we spectroscopically confirm three dual quasar systems at z < 1, two of which are previously unknown out of eight observed, based on the presence of characteristic broad emission lines in each component, while highlighting that the continuum of one object in one of the pairs is reddened. In all cases, the [OIII]5007 emission lines have mild velocity offsets, thus the joint [OIII] line profile is not double-peaked. We find a dual quasar fraction of 0.26+/-0.18% and no evidence for evolution. A comparison with the Horizon-AGN simulation seems to support the case of no evolution in the dual quasar fraction when broadly matching the quasar selection. We present the results of CO(1-0) observations of the host galaxy of a Type I superluminous supernova (SLSN-I), SN2017egm, one of the closest SLSNe-I at z = 0.03063, by using the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array. The molecular gas mass of the host galaxy is $M_{\rm gas} = (4.8 \pm 0.3) \times 10^9$ $M_{\odot}$, placing it on the sequence of normal star-forming galaxies in an $M_{\rm gas}$-star-formation rate (SFR) plane. The molecular hydrogen column density at the location of SN2017egm is higher than that of the Type II SN PTF10bgl, which is also located in the same host galaxy, and those of other Type II and Ia SNe located in different galaxies, suggesting that SLSNe-I have a preference for a dense molecular gas environment. On the other hand, the column density at the location of SN2017egm is comparable to those of Type Ibc SNe. The surface densities of molecular gas and the SFR at the location of SN2017egm are consistent with those of spatially resolved local star-forming galaxies and follow the Schmidt-Kennicutt relation. These facts suggest that SLSNe-I can occur in environments with the same star-formation mechanism as in normal star-forming galaxies., Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures, accepted for publication in PASJ

We present our ALMA Band 8 observations of a damped Ly${\alpha}$ absorption (DLA) system at $z$=3.150 observed in the spectrum of the quasar Q2233+131 at $z$=3.295. The optical counterpart of this DLA has been identified and it shows a double-peaked Ly${\alpha}$ emission line. Since one possible origin of DLAs at high redshift is an outflowing gas from star-forming galaxies, DLA2233+131 provides a good laboratory to investigate the nature of high-$z$ DLAs. Motivated by this, we have carried out ALMA band 8 observations to study the [C II] line in this system. However, we do not detect any significant emission line in the observed pass bands. Instead, we have serendipitously found three submm continuum sources in the observed sky area. One appears to be the quasar Q2233+131 itself while the other two sources are newly identified submm galaxies (SMGs), called SMG1 and SMG2 in this paper. They are located at a separation of 400.7 and 800.1 from Q2233+131, respectively. Their 646 ${\mu}$m fluxes are 6.35 mJy and 6.43 mJy, respectively, being higher than that of Q2233+131, 3.62 mJy. Since these two SMGs are not detected in the optical images obtained with the Hubble Space Telescope and the Subaru Telescope, they have a very red spectral energy distribution. It is, therefore,suggested that they are high-redshift galaxies or very dusty galaxies at intermediate redshift although we cannot rule out the possibility that they are optically very faint SMG analogs at low redshift. We report on the detection of the [CII] 157.7 $\mu$m emission from the Lyman break galaxy (LBG) MACS0416_Y1 at z = 8.3113, by using the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA). The luminosity ratio of [OIII] 88 $\mu$m (from previous campaigns) to [CII] is 9.31 $\pm$ 2.6, indicative of hard interstellar radiation fields and/or a low covering fraction of photo-dissociation regions. The emission of [CII] is cospatial to the 850 $\mu$m dust emission (90 $\mu$m rest-frame, from previous campaigns), however the peak [CII] emission does not agree with the peak [OIII] emission, suggesting that the lines originate from different conditions in the interstellar medium. We fail to detect continuum emission at 1.5 mm (160 $\mu$m rest-frame) down to 18 $\mu$Jy (3$\sigma$). This nondetection places a strong limit on the dust spectrum, considering the 137 $\pm$ 26 $\mu$Jy continuum emission at 850 $\mu$m. This suggests an unusually warm dust component (T $>$ 80 K, 90% confidence limit), and/or a steep dust-emissivity index ($\beta_{\rm dust}$ $>$ 2), compared to galaxy-wide dust emission found at lower redshifts (typically T $\sim$ 30 - 50 K, $\beta_{\rm dust}$ $\sim$ 1 - 2). If such temperatures are common, this would reduce the required dust mass and relax the dust production problem at the highest redshifts. We therefore warn against the use of only single-wavelength information to derive physical properties, recommend a more thorough examination of dust temperatures in the early Universe, and stress the need for instrumentation that probes the peak of warm dust in the Epoch of Reionization., Comment: 15 pages, 8 figures, Accepted by MNRAS

We perform a stacking analysis of {\it Planck}, {\it AKARI}, Infrared Astronomical Satellite ($IRAS$), Wide-field Infrared Survey Eplorer ($WISE$), and {\it Herschel} images of the largest number of (candidate) protoclusters at $z\sim3.8$ selected from the Hyper Suprime-Cam Subaru Strategic Program (HSC-SSP). Stacking the images of the $179$ candidate protoclusters, the combined infrared (IR) emission of the protocluster galaxies in the observed $12-850~\mu$m wavelength range is successfully detected with $>5\sigma$ significance (at $Planck$). This is the first time that the average IR spectral energy distribution (SED) of a protocluster has been constrained at $z\sim4$. The observed IR SEDs of the protoclusters exhibit significant excess emission in the mid-IR compared to that expected from typical star-forming galaxies (SFGs). They are reproduced well using SED models of intense starburst galaxies with warm/hot dust heated by young stars, or by a population of active galactic nuclei (AGN)/SFG composites. For the pure star-forming model, a total IR (from 8 to 1000 $\mu$m) luminosity of $19.3_{-4.2}^{+0.6}\times10^{13}~L_{\odot}$ and a star formation rate (SFR) of $16.3_{-7.8}^{+1.0}\times10^3~M_{\odot}$ yr$^{-1}$ are found whereas for the AGN/SFG composite model, $5.1_{-2.5}^{+2.5}\times10^{13}~L_{\odot}$ and $2.1^{+6.3}_{-1.7}\times10^3~M_{\odot}$ yr$^{-1}$ are found. Uncertainty remaining in the total SFRs; however, the IR luminosities of the most massive protoclusters are likely to continue increasing up to $z\sim4$. Meanwhile, no significant IR flux excess is observed around optically selected QSOs at similar redshifts, which confirms previous results. Our results suggest that the $z\sim4$ protoclusters trace dense, intensely star-forming environments that may also host obscured AGNs missed by the selection in the optical., Comment: 26 pages, 12 figures, Accepted for publication in ApJ

We present our new ALMA observations targeting [OIII]88um, [CII]158um, [NII]122um, and dust continuum emission for three Lyman break galaxies at z=6.0293-6.2037 identified in the Subaru/Hyper Suprime-Cam survey. We clearly detect [OIII] and [CII] lines from all of the galaxies at 4.3-11.8sigma levels, and identify multi-band dust continuum emission in two of the three galaxies, allowing us to estimate infrared luminosities and dust temperatures simultaneously. In conjunction with previous ALMA observations for six galaxies at z>6, we confirm that all the nine z=6-9 galaxies have high [OIII]/[CII] ratios of L[OIII]/L[CII]~3-20, ~10 times higher than z~0 galaxies. We also find a positive correlation between the [OIII]/[CII] ratio and the Lya equivalent width (EW) at the ~90% confidence level. We carefully investigate physical origins of the high [OIII]/[CII] ratios at z=6-9 using Cloudy, and find that high density of the interstellar medium, low C/O abundance ratio, and the cosmic microwave background attenuation are responsible to only a part of the z=6-9 galaxies. Instead, the observed high [OIII]/[CII] ratios are explained by 10-100 times higher ionization parameters or low photodissociation region (PDR) covering fractions of 0-10%, both of which are consistent with our [NII] observations. The latter scenario can be reproduced with a density bounded nebula with PDR deficit, which would enhance the Lya, Lyman continuum, and C+ ionizing photons escape from galaxies, consistent with the [OIII]/[CII]-Lya EW correlation we find., Comment: 20 pages, 18 figures, Accepted for publication in ApJ

We present an IGM HI tomography map in a survey volume of $16 \times 19 \times 131 \ h^{-3} {\rm comoving \ Mpc}^{3}$ (cMpc$^3$) centered at MAMMOTH-1 nebula and three neighbouring quasars at $z=2.3$. MAMMOTH-1 nebula is an enormous Ly$\alpha$ nebula (ELAN), hosted by a type-II quasar dubbed MAMMOTH1-QSO, that extends over $1\ h^{-1}$ cMpc with not fully clear physical origin. Here we investigate the HI-gas distribution around MAMMOTH1-QSO with the ELAN and three neighbouring type-I quasars, making the IGM HI tomography map with a spatial resolution of $2.6\ h^{-1}$ cMpc. Our HI tomography map is reconstructed with HI Ly$\alpha$ forest absorption of bright background objects at $z=2.4-2.9$: one eBOSS quasar and 16 Keck/LRIS galaxy spectra. We estimate the radial profile of HI flux overdensity for MAMMOTH1-QSO, and find that MAMMOTH1-QSO resides in a volume with significantly weak HI absorption. This suggests that MAMMOTH1-QSO has a proximity zone where quasar illuminates and photo-ionizes the surrounding HI gas and suppresses HI absorption, and that the ELAN is probably a photo-ionized cloud embedded in the cosmic web. The HI radial profile of MAMMOTH1-QSO is very similar to those of three neighbouring type-I quasars at $z=2.3$, which is compatible with the AGN unification model. We compare the distributions of the HI absorption and star-forming galaxies in our survey volume, and identify a spatial offset between density peaks of star-forming galaxies and HI gas. The CFHT Large Area U-band Deep Survey (CLAUDS) uses data taken with the MegaCam mosaic imager on CFHT to produce images of 18.60 deg2 with median seeing of FWHM=0.92 arcsec and to a median depth of U = 27.1 AB (5 sigma in 2 arcsec apertures), with selected areas that total 1.36 deg2 reaching a median depth of U=27.7 AB. These are the deepest U-band images assembled to date over this large an area. These data are located in four fields also imaged to comparably faint levels in grizy and several narrowband filters as part of the Hyper Suprime-Cam (HSC) Subaru Strategic Program (HSC-SSP). These CFHT and Subaru datasets will remain unmatched in their combination of area and depth until the advent of the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope (LSST). This paper provides an overview of the scientific motivation for CLAUDS and gives details of the observing strategy, observations, data reduction, and data merging with the HSC-SSP. Three early applications of these deep data are used to illustrate the potential of the dataset: deep U-band galaxy number counts, z~3 Lyman break galaxy (LBG) selection, and photometric redshifts improved by adding CLAUDS U to the Subaru HSC grizy photometry., Comment: MNRAS, in press

We report results of a search for galaxies at z>3 with Lyman continuum (LyC) emission using a narrow-band filter NB359 with Subaru / Suprime-Cam in a ~800 arcmin$^2$ blank field around the GOODS-N. We use 103 star-forming galaxies (SFGs) and 8 AGNs with spectroscopic redshifts in a range between 3.06 and 3.5, and 157 photometrically selected z=3.1 Lyman $\alpha$ emitter (LAE) candidates as the targets. After removing galaxies spectroscopically confirmed to be contaminated by foreground sources, we found two SFGs and one AGN as candidate LyC emitting sources among the targets with spectroscopic redshifts. Among LAE candidates, five sources are detected in the NB359 image, and three among them may be contaminated by foreground sources. We compare the sample galaxies in the GOODS-N with those in the SSA22, where a prominent protocluster at z=3.1 is known and the LyC search using the same NB359 filter has been made. Frequency of galaxies with LyC leakage in the SSA22 field may be about two times higher than the galaxies in the GOODS-N with the sample UV magnitude range, although the numbers of LyC detections in these fields are too small to make a statistically significant conclusion. By combining the sample galaxies in these fields, we place the 3$\sigma$ upper limits of the observed LyC-to-UV flux density ratio and LyC escape fraction for galaxies at z=3.1 with absolute UV magnitude $M_{UV} < -18.8$ as ($f_{LyC}/f_{UV})_{obs} < 0.036$ and $f_{esc}^{abs}<8$\%, respectively., Comment: 23 pages, 19 figures. We report Atacama Large Millimetre/submillimeter Array (ALMA) Cycle-5 follow-up observations of two candidate [CII] emitters at z ~ 6 in the ALMA deep field in SSA22 (ADF22). The candidates were detected blindly in a Cycle-2 ALMA survey covering ~ 5 square arcmins, with a single tuning, along with two CO lines associated with galaxies at lower redshifts. Various tests suggested at least one of the two > 6-sigma [CII] candidates should be robust (Hayatsu et al. 2017). Nevertheless, our new, deeper observations recover neither candidate, demonstrating a higher contamination rate than expected. We investigate the molecular gas in, and star-formation properties of, the host galaxy (CGCG 137-068) of a mysterious transient, AT2018cow, at kpc and larger scales, using archival band-3 data from the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA). AT2018cow is the nearest Fast-Evolving Luminous Transient (FELT), and this is the very first study unveiling molecular-gas properties of FELTs. The achieved rms and beam size are 0.21 mJy beam$^{-1}$ at a velocity resolution of $40$ km s$^{-1}$ and $3".66\times2".71$ ($1.1~{\rm kpc} \times 0.8~{\rm kpc}$), respectively. CO($J$=1-0) emission is successfully detected. The total molecular gas mass inferred from the CO data is $(1.85\pm0.04)\times10^8$ M$_\odot$ with the Milky Way CO-to-H$_2$ conversion factor. The H$_2$ column density at the AT2018cow site is estimated to be $8.6\times10^{20}$ cm$^{-2}$. The ALMA data reveal that (1) CGCG 137-068 is a normal star-forming (SF) dwarf galaxy in terms of its molecular gas and star-formation properties and (2) AT2018cow is located between a CO peak and a blue star cluster. These properties suggest on-going star formation and favor the explosion of a massive star as the progenitor of AT2018cow. We also find that CGCG 137-068 has a solar or super-solar metallicity. If the metallicity of the other FELT hosts is not higher than average, then some property of SF dwarf galaxies other than metallicity may be related to FELTs., Comment: 8 pages, 3 figures, 2 tables, accepted for publication in ApJL

We present results of the cross-correlation Ly$\alpha$ intensity mapping with Subaru/Hyper Suprime-Cam (HSC) ultra-deep narrowband images and Ly$\alpha$ emitters (LAEs) at $z=5.7$ and $6.6$ in a total area of $4$ deg$^2$. Although overwhelming amount of data quality controls have been performed for the narrowband images, we further conduct extensive analysis evaluating systematics of large-scale point-spread-function wings, sky subtractions, and unknown errors based on physically uncorrelated signals and sources found in real HSC images and object catalogs, respectively. Removing the systematics, we carefully calculate cross-correlations between Ly$\alpha$ intensity of the narrowband images and the LAEs. We tentatively identify very diffuse Ly$\alpha$ emission with the $\simeq 3\sigma$ ($\simeq 2\sigma$) significance at $\gtrsim$ 100 comoving kpc (ckpc) far from the LAEs at $z=5.7$ ($6.6$), around and probably even beyond a virial radius of star-forming galaxies with $M_\mathrm{h}\sim10^{11}M_\odot$. The diffuse Ly$\alpha$ emission possibly extends up to $1$,$000$ ckpc with the surface brightness of $10^{-20}$-$10^{-19}$ erg s$^{-1}$ cm$^{-2}$ arcsec$^{-2}$. We confirm that the small-scale ($<150$ ckpc) Ly$\alpha$ radial profiles of LAEs are consistent with those obtained by recent MUSE observations. Comparisons with numerical simulations suggest that the large-scale ($\sim150$-$1$,$000$ ckpc) Ly$\alpha$ emission are not explained by unresolved faint neighboring galaxies including satellites, but by a combination of Ly$\alpha$ photons emitted from the central LAE and other unknown sources, such as cold-gas streams and galactic outflow. We find no evolution in the Ly$\alpha$ radial profiles of our LAEs from $z=5.7$ to $6.6$, where theoretical models predict a flattening of the profile slope made by cosmic reionization, albeit with our moderately large observational errors., Comment: 11 pages, 6 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

We report on the results of deep and wide-field (1.1 deg$^2$) narrow-band observations with Subaru/Hyper Suprime-Cam (HSC) of a field around a hyperluminous QSO (HLQSO), HS1549+1919, residing in a protocluster at $z=2.84$, to map the large-scale structure of Ly$\alpha$ emitters (LAEs). One HSC pointing enables us to detect 3490 LAEs and 76 extended Ly$\alpha$ blobs (LABs), probing diverse environments from voids to protoclusters. The HLQSO is found to be near the center of the protocluster, which corresponds to the intersection of $\sim$100 cMpc-scale structures of LAEs. LABs are basically distributed along the large-scale structure, with larger ones particularly clustered around the HLQSO, confirming a previously noted tendency of LABs to prefer denser environments. Moreover, the shapes of LABs near the HLQSO appear to be aligned with the large-scale structure. Finally, a deep Ly$\alpha$ image reveals a diffuse Ly$\alpha$ nebula along a filamentary structure with no luminous UV/sub-mm counterpart. We suggest that the diffuse nebula is due to a cold filament with high clumping factor illuminated by the QSO, with a required high clumpiness provided by unresolved residing halos of mass $\leq 10^{9-10}M_\odot$., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures, submitted to PASJ

We present the results from ALMA observations of [NII]205 micron, [CII]158 micron, and [OII]88 micron lines in an unlensed submillimeter galaxy at z=4.3, COSMOS-AzTEC-1, hosting a compact starburst core with an effective radius of 1 kpc. The [CII] and [NII] emission are spatially-resolved in 0.3 arcsec-resolution (1 kpc in radius). The kinematic properties of the [NII] emission are consistent with those of the CO(4-3) and [CII] emission, suggesting that the ionized gas feels the same gravitational potential as the associated molecular gas and photodissociation regions (PDRs). On the other hand, the spatial extent is different among the lines and dust continuum: the [CII] emitting gas is the most extended and the dust is the most compact, leading to a difference of the physical conditions in the interstellar medium. We derive the incident far-ultraviolet flux and the hydrogen gas density through PDR modeling by properly subtracting the contribution of ionized gas to the total [CII] emission. The observed [CII] emission is likely produced by dense PDRs with nH(PDR)=10^(5.5-5.75) cm^-3 and G0=10^(3.5-3.75) in the central 1 kpc region and nH(PDR)=10^(5.0-5.25) cm^-3 and G0=10^(3.25-3.5) in the central 3 kpc region. We have also successfully measured the line ratio of [OIII/[NII] in the central 3 kpc region of COSMOS-AzTEC-1 at z=4.3, which is the highest redshift where both nitrogen and oxygen lines are detected. Under the most likely physical conditions, the measured luminosity ratio of L([OIII])/L([NII])=6.4+-2.2 indicates a near solar metallicity with Zgas=0.7-1.0 Zsol, suggesting a chemically evolved system at z=4.3., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ

We present the results from ALMA CO(3-2) observations of 66 Halpha-selected galaxies in three protoclusters around radio galaxies, PKS1138-262 (z=2.16) and USS1558-003 (z=2.53), and 4C23.56 (z=2.49). The pointing areas have an overdensity of ~100 compared to a mean surface number density of galaxies in field environments. We detect CO emission line in 16 star-forming galaxies, including previously published six galaxies, to measure the molecular gas mass. In the stellar mass range of 10.511.0 are comparable in mass to the scaling relation, or smaller. Our results suggest that the environmental effects on gas properties are mass-dependent: in high-density environments, gas accretion through cosmic filaments is accelerated in less massive galaxies while this is suppressed in the most massive system., Comment: 11 pages, 5 figures, 2 tables, accepted in Publications of the Astronomical Society of Japan (PASJ)

A primary goal of the SCUBA-2 Web survey is to perform tomography of the early inter-galactic medium by studying systems containing some of the brightest quasi-stellar objects (QSOs; 2.510^14 L_odot) QSOs with previous submillimetre continuum detections were followed up with CO(3-2) observations using the NOEMA interferometer. All but two of the QSOs are detected in CO(3-2); for one non-detection, our observations show a tentative 2sigma line at the expected position and redshift, and for the other non-detection we find only continuum flux density an order of magnitude brighter than the other sources. In three of the fields, a companion potentially suitable for tomography is detected in CO line emission within 25 arcsec of the QSO. We derive gas masses, dynamical masses and far-infrared luminosities, and show that the QSOs in our sample have similar properties as compared to less luminous QSOs and SMGs in the literature, despite the fact that their black-hole masses (which are proportional to L_AGN) are 1-2 orders of magnitude larger. We discuss two interpretations of these observations: this is due to selection effects, such as preferential face-on viewing angles and picking out objects in the tail ends of the scatter in host-galaxy mass and black-hole mass relationships; or the black hole masses have been overestimated because the accretion rates are super-Eddington., Comment: 16 pages, 7 figures. Submillimeter bright galaxies in the early Universe are vigorously forming stars at ~1000 times higher rate than the Milky Way. A large fraction of stars is formed in the central 1 kiloparsec region, that is comparable in size to massive, quiescent galaxies found at the peak of the cosmic star formation history, and eventually the core of giant elliptical galaxies in the present-day Universe. However, the physical and kinematic properties inside a compact starburst core are poorly understood because dissecting it requires angular resolution even higher than the Hubble Space Telescope can offer. Here we report 550 parsec-resolution observations of gas and dust in the brightest unlensed submillimeter galaxy at z=4.3. We map out for the first time the spatial and kinematic structure of molecular gas inside the heavily dust-obscured core. The gas distribution is clumpy while the underlying disk is rotation-supported. Exploiting the high-quality map of molecular gas mass surface density, we find a strong evidence that the starburst disk is gravitationally unstable, implying that the self-gravity of gas overcomes the differential rotation and the internal pressure by stellar radiation feedback. The observed molecular gas would be consumed by star formation in a timescale of 100 million years, that is comparable to those in merging starburst galaxies. We present the survey design, data reduction, construction of images, and source catalog of the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) twenty-six arcmin^2 survey of GOODS-S at one-millimeter (ASAGAO). ASAGAO is a deep (1sigma ~ 61 uJy/beam for a 250 klambda-tapered map with a synthesized beam size of 0.51" x 0.45") and wide area (26 arcmin^2) survey on a contiguous field at 1.2 mm. By combining with ALMA archival data in the GOODS-South field, we obtained a deeper map in the same region (1sigma ~ 30 uJy/beam for a deep region with a 250 klambda-taper, and a synthesized beam size of 0.59" x 0.53"), providing the largest sample of sources (25 sources at >=5.0sigma, 45 sources at >=4.5sigma) among ALMA blank-field surveys to date. The number counts shows that 52(+11 -8)% of the extragalactic background light at 1.2 mm is resolved into discrete sources at S1.2m > 135 uJy. We create infrared (IR) luminosity functions (LFs) in the redshift range of z = 1-3 from the ASAGAO sources with KS-band counterparts, and constrain the faintest luminosity of the LF at 2.0 < z < 3.0. The LFs are consistent with previous results based on other ALMA and SCUBA-2 observations, which suggest a positive luminosity evolution and negative density evolution with increasing redshift. We find that obscured star-formation of sources with IR luminosities of log(L(IR)/Lsun)} ~> 11.8 account for ~~60%-90% of the z ~ 2 cosmic star-formation rate density., Comment: 19 pages, 18 figures, accepted for publication in PASJ

We present CO J=4-3 line and 3 mm dust continuum observations of a 100 kpc-scale filamentary Ly{\alpha} nebula (SSA22 LAB18) at z=3.1 using the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA). We detected the CO J=4-3 line at a systemic z(CO)=3.093 {\pm} 0.001 at 11 {\sigma} from one of the ALMA continuum sources associated with the Ly{\alpha} filament. We estimated the CO J=4-3 luminosity of L'CO(4-3)=(2.3\pm0.2)x10^9 K km s^{-1} pc^2 for this CO source, which is one order of magnitude smaller than those of typical z>1 dusty star-forming galaxies (DSFGs) of similar far-infrared luminosity L(IR)~10^{12} Lsun. We derived a molecular gas mass of Mgas=(4.4^{+0.9}_{-0.6})x10^9 Msun and a star-formation rate of SFR=270\pm160 Msun yr^{-1}. We also estimated a gas depletion time of {\tau}(dep)=17\pm10 Myr, being shorter than those of typical DSFGs. It is suggested that this source is in a transition phase from DSFG to a gas-poor, early-type galaxy. From ALMA to Herschel multi-band dust continuum observations, we measured a dust emissivity index {\beta}=2.3\pm0.2, which is similar to those of local gas-poor, early-type galaxies. Such a high {\beta} can be reproduced by specific chemical compositions for interstellar dust at the submillimeter wavelengths from recent laboratory experiments. ALMA CO and multi-band dust continuum observations can constrain the evolutionary stage of high-redshift galaxies through {\tau}(dep) and {\beta}, and thus we can investigate dust chemical compositions even in the early Universe., Comment: 6 pagers, 3 figures

We present the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) detection of the [O III] 88 $\mu$m line and rest-frame 90 $\mu$m dust continuum emission in a Y-dropout Lyman break galaxy (LBG), MACS0416_Y1, lying behind the Frontier Field cluster MACS J0416.1-2403. This [O III] detection confirms the LBG with a spectroscopic redshift of $z = 8.3118 \pm 0.0003$, making this object one of the furthest galaxies ever identified spectroscopically. The observed 850 $\mu$m flux density of $137 \pm 26$ $\mu$Jy corresponds to a de-lensed total infrared (IR) luminosity of $L_{\rm IR} = (1.7 \pm 0.3) \times 10^{11} L_{\odot}$ if assuming a dust temperature of $T_{\rm dust} = 50$ K and an emissivity index of $\beta = 1.5$, yielding a large dust mass of $4 \times 10^6 M_{\odot}$. The ultraviolet-to-far IR spectral energy distribution modeling where the [O III] emissivity model is incorporated suggests the presence of a young ($\tau_{\rm age} \approx 4$ Myr), star-forming (SFR $\approx 60 M_{\odot}$ yr$^{-1}$), moderately metal-polluted ($Z \approx 0.2 Z_{\odot}$) stellar component with a mass of $M_{\rm star} = 3 \times 10^8 M_{\odot}$. An analytic dust mass evolution model with a single episode of star-formation does not reproduce the metallicity and dust mass in $\tau_{\rm age} \approx 4$ Myr, suggesting a pre-existing evolved stellar component with $M_{\rm star} \sim 3 \times 10^9 M_{\odot}$ and $\tau_{\rm age} \sim 0.3$ Gyr as the origin of the dust mass., Comment: Accepted by ApJ. 18 pages, 10 figures, 5 tables

We present the VIMOS Spectroscopic Survey of a Supercluster in the COSMOS field (VIS3COS) at z~0.84. We use VIMOS high-resolution spectra (GG475 filter) to spectroscopically select 490 galaxies in and around the super-structure and an additional 481 galaxies in the line of sight. We present the redshift distribution, the catalog to be made public and the first results on the properties of individual galaxies and stacked spectra (3500{\AA}<\lambda<4200{\AA} rest-frame). We probe a wide range of densities and environments (from low-density field to clusters and rich groups). We find a decrease in the median star formation rate from low to high density environments in all bins of stellar mass and a sharp rise of the quenched fraction (from ~10% to ~40-60%) of intermediate stellar mass galaxies $(10<\log_{10}\left(M_\star/\mathrm{M_\odot}\right)<10.75)$ from filaments to clusters. The quenched fraction for massive galaxies shows little dependence on the environment being constant at ~30-40%. We find a break in the strength of the [OII] emission, with nearly constant line equivalent widths at lower densities (~-11{\AA}) and then a drop to ~-2.5{\AA} towards higher densities. The break in the [OII] line strength happens at similar densities ($\log_{10}(1+\delta)\sim0.0-0.5$) as the observed rise in the quenched fraction. Our results may provide further clues regarding the different environmental processes affecting galaxies with different stellar masses and highlight the advantages of a single dataset in the COSMOS field probing a wide range of stellar masses and environments. Recent observations with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) detected far-infrared emission lines such as the [OIII] 88 \mu m line from galaxies at $z \sim 7 - 9$. Far-infrared lines can be used to probe the structure and kinematics of such high-redshift galaxies as well as to accurately determine their spectroscopic redshifts. We use a cosmological simulation of galaxy formation to study the physical properties of [OIII] 88 \mu m emitters. In a comoving volume of 50 $h^{-1}$ Mpc on a side, we locate 34 galaxies with stellar masses greater than $10^8\ {\rm M_\odot}$ at $z = 9$, and more than 270 such galaxies at $z = 7$. We calculate the [OIII] 88 \mu m luminosities ($L_{\rm OIII}$) by combining a physical model of HII regions with emission line calculations using the photoionization code CLOUDY. We show that the resulting $L_{\rm OIII}$, for a given star formation rate, is slightly higher than predicted from the empirical relation for local galaxies, and is consistent with recent observations of galaxies at redshifts 7 - 9. Bright [OIII] emitters with $L_{\rm OIII} > 10^8 {\rm L_\odot}$ have stellar masses greater than $10^9\ {\rm M_\odot}$, star formation rates higher than $3\ {\rm M_\odot\ yr}^{-1}$, and the typical metallicity is $\sim 0.1\ {\rm Z_\odot}$. The galaxies are hosted by dark matter halos with masses greater than $10^{10.5}\ {\rm M_\odot}$. Massive galaxies show characteristic structure where the [OIII] emitting gas largely overlaps with young stars, but the emission peak is separated from the main stellar population, suggesting the stochastic and localized nature of star formation in the first galaxies. We propose to use the [OIII] 5007 \AA\ line, to be detected by James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), to study the properties of galaxies whose [OIII] 88 \mu m line emission has been already detected with ALMA., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures. A fundamental quest of modern astronomy is to locate the earliest galaxies and study how they influenced the intergalactic medium a few hundred million years after the Big Bang. The abundance of star-forming galaxies is known to decline from redshifts of about 6 to 10, but a key question is the extent of star formation at even earlier times, corresponding to the period when the first galaxies might have emerged. Here we present spectroscopic observations of MACS1149-JD1, a gravitationally lensed galaxy observed when the Universe was less than four per cent of its present age. We detect an emission line of doubly ionized oxygen at a redshift of $9.1096\pm0.0006$, with an uncertainty of one standard deviation. This precisely determined redshift indicates that the red rest-frame optical colour arises from a dominant stellar component that formed about 250 million years after the Big Bang, corresponding to a redshift of about 15. To search for dust-obscured star-formation activity in the early Universe, it is essential to obtain a deep and wide submillimeter/millimeter map. The advent of the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) has enabled us to obtain such maps at sufficiently high spatial resolution to be free from source confusion. We present a new 1.1mm map obtained by ALMA in the SSA22 field. SSA22 contains a remarkable proto-cluster at z=3.09 and is therefore an ideal region to investigate the role of large-scale cosmic web on dust-obscured star formation. The typical 1sigma depth of our map is 73 uJy/beam at a 0.5 resolution; combined with earlier, archived observations, we map an area of 20 arcmin^2 (71 comoving Mpc^2 at z=3.09). Within the combined survey area we have detected 35 sources at a signal-to-noise ratio (S/N) >5, with flux densities, S1.1mm=0.43--5.6 mJy, equivalent to star-formation rates of >=100--1000 Msun/yr at z=3.09, for a Chabrier initial mass function; of these, 17 are new detections. The cumulative number counts show a factor 3--5x excess compared to blank fields. The excess suggests enhanced dust-enshrouded star-formation activity in the proto-cluster on a 10 comoving Mpc scale, indicating accelerated galaxy evolution in this overdense region., Comment: 15 pages, 7 figures, accepted for publication in PASJ

We conduct a systematic search for galaxy protoclusters at $z\sim3.8$ based on the latest internal data release (S16A) of the Hyper SuprimeCam Subaru strategic program (HSC-SSP). In the Wide layer of the HSC-SSP, we investigate the large-scale projected sky distribution of $g$-dropout galaxies over an area of $121\,\mathrm{deg^2}$, and identify 216 large-scale overdense regions ($>4\sigma$ overdensity significance) that are good protocluster candidates. Of these, 37 are located within $8\,\mathrm{arcmin}$ ($3.4\,\mathrm{physicalMpc}$) from other protocluster candidates of higher overdensity, and are expected to merge into a single massive structure by $z=0$. Therefore, we find 179 unique protocluster candidates in our survey. A cosmological simulation that includes projection effects predicts that more than 76\% of these candidates will evolve into galaxy clusters with halo masses of at least $10^{14}\,M_{\odot}$ by $z=0$. The unprecedented size of our protocluster candidate catalog allowed us to perform, for the first time, an angular clustering analysis of the systematic sample of protocluster candidates. We find a correlation length of $35.0\,h^{-1}\,\mathrm{Mpc}$. The relation between correlation length and number density of $z\sim3.8$ protocluster candidates is consistent with the prediction of the $\Lambda$CDM model, and the correlation length is similar to that of rich clusters in the local universe. This result suggests that our protocluster candidates are tracing similar spatial structures as those expected of the progenitors of rich clusters and enhances the confidence that our method to identify protoclusters at high redshifts is robust. We present the results of a blind millimeter line emitter search using ALMA Band 6 data with a single frequency tuning toward four gravitational lensing clusters (RXJ1347.5-1145, Abell S0592, MACS J0416.1-2403, and Abell 2744). We construct three-dimensional signal-to-noise ratio (S/N) cubes with 60 MHz and 100 MHz binning, and search for millimeter line emitters. We do not detect any line emitters with a peak S/N > 5, although we do find a line emitter candidate with a peak S/N ~ 4.5. These results provide upper limits to the CO(3-2), CO(4-3), CO(5-4), and [CII] luminosity functions at z ~ 0.3, 0.7, 1.2, and 6, respectively. Because of the magnification effect of gravitational lensing clusters, the new data provide the first constraints on the CO and [CII] luminosity functions at unprecedentedly low luminosity levels, i.e., down to $<~ 10^{-3}-10^{-1} $Mpc$^{-3}$ dex$^{-1}$ at $L'_{CO} ~ 10^8-10^{10}$ K km $s^{-1}$ pc$^2$ and $<~ 10^{-3}-10^{-2}$ Mpc$^{-3}$ dex$^{-1}$ at $L_[CII] ~ 10^8-10^{10} L_\odot$, respectively. Although the constraints to date are not stringent yet, we find that the evolution of the CO and [CII] luminosity functions are broadly consistent with the predictions of semi-analytical models. Active galactic nuclei (AGNs) in the high-redshift Universe are thought to reside in overdense environments. However, recent works provide controversial results partly due to the use of different techniques and possible suppression of nearby galaxy formation by AGN feedback. We conducted deep and wide-field imaging observations with the Suprime-Cam on the Subaru telescope and searched for Lyman-alpha emitters (LAEs) around two QSOs (quasi-stellar objects) at $z\sim4.9$ and a radio galaxy at $z\sim4.5$ by using narrow-band filters to address these issues more robustly. In the QSO fields, we obtained additional broad-band images to select Lyman-break galaxies (LBGs) at $z\sim5$ for comparison. We constructed a photometric sample of 301 LAEs and 170 LBGs in total. A wide field of view (34arcmin$\times$27arcmin, corresponding to 80$\times$60 comoving Mpc$^2$) of the Suprime-Cam enabled us to probe galaxies in the immediate vicinities of the AGNs and in the blank fields simultaneously and compare various properties of them in a consistent manner. The two QSOs are located near local density peaks ($<2\sigma$) and one of the QSOs has a close companion LAE with projected separation of 80 physical kpc. The radio galaxy is found to be near a void of LAEs. The number densities of LAEs/LGBs in a larger spatial scale around the AGNs are not significantly different from those in blank fields. No sign of feedback is found down to $L_{Ly\alpha}\sim10^{41.8}\mathrm{~erg~s^{-1}}$. Our results suggest that high-redshift AGNs are not associated with extreme galaxy overdensity and that this cannot be attributed to the effect of AGN feedback., Comment: 16 pages, 9 figures, Accepted for publication in ApJ

We present the SILVERRUSH program strategy and clustering properties investigated with $\sim 2,000$ Ly$\alpha$ emitters at $z=5.7$ and $6.6$ found in the early data of the Hyper Suprime-Cam (HSC) Subaru Strategic Program survey exploiting the carefully designed narrowband filters. We derive angular correlation functions with the unprecedentedly large samples of LAEs at $z=6-7$ over the large total area of $14-21$ deg$^2$ corresponding to $0.3-0.5$ comoving Gpc$^2$. We obtain the average large-scale bias values of $b_{\rm avg}=4.1\pm 0.2$ ($4.5\pm 0.6$) at $z=5.7$ ($z=6.6$) for $\gtrsim L^*$ LAEs, indicating the weak evolution of LAE clustering from $z=5.7$ to $6.6$. We compare the LAE clustering results with two independent theoretical models that suggest an increase of an LAE clustering signal by the patchy ionized bubbles at the epoch of reionization (EoR), and estimate the neutral hydrogen fraction to be $x_{\rm HI}=0.15^{+0.15}_{-0.15}$ at $z=6.6$. Based on the halo occupation distribution models, we find that the $\gtrsim L^*$ LAEs are hosted by the dark-matter halos with the average mass of $\log (\left < M_{\rm h} \right >/M_\odot) =11.1^{+0.2}_{-0.4}$ ($10.8^{+0.3}_{-0.5}$) at $z=5.7$ ($6.6$) with a Ly$\alpha$ duty cycle of 1 % or less, where the results of $z=6.6$ LAEs may be slightly biased, due to the increase of the clustering signal at the EoR. Our clustering analysis reveals the low-mass nature of $\gtrsim L^*$ LAEs at $z=6-7$, and that these LAEs probably evolve into massive super-$L^*$ galaxies in the present-day universe., Comment: 16 pages, 10 figures. We have carried out a panoramic Ly$\alpha$ narrowband imaging with Suprime-Cam on Subaru towards the known protocluster USS1558--003 at $z=2.53$. Our previous narrowband imaging at near-infrared has identified multiple dense groups of H$\alpha$ emitters (HAEs) within the protocluster. We have now identified the large-scale structures across a $\sim$50 comoving Mpc scale traced by Ly$\alpha$ emitters (LAEs) in which the protocluster traced by the HAEs is embedded. On a smaller scale, however, there are remarkably few LAEs in the regions of HAE overdensities. Moreover, the stacking analyses of the images show that HAEs in higher-density regions show systematically lower escape fractions of Ly$\alpha$ photons than those of HAEs in lower-density regions. These phenomena may be driven by the extra depletion of Ly$\alpha$ emission lines along our line of sight by more intervening cold circumgalactic/intergalactic medium and/or dust existing in the dense core. We also caution that all the past high-$z$ protocluster surveys using LAEs as the tracers would have largely missed galaxies in the very dense cores of the protoclusters where we would expect to see any early environmental effects., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS Letter

Using galaxies as background light sources to map intervening Lya absorption is a novel approach to study the interplay among galaxies, the circum-galactic medium (CGM), and the intergalactic medium (IGM). Introducing a new measure of z = 3.1$ HI Lya absorption relative to the cosmic mean, Delta_NB497, estimated from photometric data of star-forming galaxies at 3.3 < z < 3.5, we have made two-dimensional Delta_NB497 maps in the z = 3.1 SSA22 proto-cluster region and two control fields (SXDS and GOODS-N fields) with a spatial resolution of ~ 5 comoving Mpc. The Delta_NB497 measurements in the SSA22 field are systematically larger than those in the control fields, and this HI absorption enhancement extends more than 50 comoving Mpc. The field-averaged (i.e., ~50 comoving Mpc scale) Delta_NB497 and the overdensity of Lya emitters (LAEs) seem to be correlated, while there is no clear dependency of the Delta_NB497 on the local LAE overdensity in a few comoving Mpc scale. These results suggest that diffuse HI gas spreads out in/around the SSA22 proto-cluster. We have also found an enhancement of Delta_NB497 at a projected distance < 100 physical kpc from the nearest z = 3.1 galaxies at least in the SSA22 field, which is probably due to HI gas associated with the CGM of individual galaxies. The HI absorption enhancement in the CGM-scale tends to be weaker around galaxies with stronger Lya emission, which suggests that the Lya escape fraction from galaxies depends on hydrogen neutrality in the CGM., Comment: 13 pages, 11 figures, 1 table, accepted to MNRAS

We report the result from observations conducted with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) to detect [CII] 158 um fine structure line emission from galaxies embedded in one of the most spectacular Lyman-alpha blobs (LABs) at z=3.1, SSA22-LAB1. Of three dusty star-forming galaxies previously discovered by ALMA 860 um dust continuum survey toward SSA22-LAB1, we detected the [CII] line from one, LAB1-ALMA3 at z=3.0993+/-0.0004. No line emission was detected, associated with the other ALMA continuum sources or from three rest-frame UV/optical selected z_spec~3.1 galaxies within the field of view. For LAB1-ALMA3, we find relatively bright [CII] emission compared to the infrared luminosity (L_[CII]/L_[CII]) and an extremely high [CII] 158 um and [NII] 205 um emission line ratio (L_[CII]/L_[NII]>55). The relatively strong [CII] emission may be caused by abundant photodissociation regions and sub-solar metallicity, or by shock heating. The origin of the unusually strong [CII] emission could be causally related to the location within the giant LAB, although the relationship between extended Lyman-alpha emission and ISM conditions of associated galaxies is yet to be understand., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures, 1 table, accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal Letters

We present results from a deep 2'x3' (comoving scale of 3.7 Mpc x 5.5 Mpc at z=3) survey at 1.1 mm taken with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) in the SSA22 field. We observe the core region of a z = 3.09 protocluster, achieving a typical rms sensitivity of 60 micro-Jy/beam at a spatial resolution of 0".7. We detect 18 robust ALMA sources at a signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) > 5. Comparison between the ALMA map and a 1.1 mm map taken with the AzTEC camera on the Atacama Submillimeter Telescope Experiment (ASTE) indicates that three submillimeter sources discovered by the AzTEC/ASTE survey are resolved into eight individual submillimeter galaxies (SMGs) by ALMA. At least ten of our 18 ALMA SMGs have spectroscopic redshifts of z = 3.09, placing them in the protocluster. This shows that a number of dusty starburst galaxies are forming simultaneously in the core of the protocluster. The nine brightest ALMA SMGs with SNR > 10 have a median intrinsic angular size of 0".32+0".13-0".06 (2.4+1.0-0.4 physical kpc at z = 3.09), which is consistent with previous size measurements of SMGs in other fields. As expected the source counts show a possible excess compared to the counts in the general fields at S_1.1mm >= 1.0 mJy due to the protocluster. Lya nebulae, or "Lya blobs", are extended (up to ~100 kpc), bright (L[Lya] > 10^43 erg/s) clouds of Lya emitting gas that tend to lie in overdense regions at z ~ 2--5. The origin of the Lya emission remains unknown, but recent theoretical work suggests that measuring the polarization might discriminate among powering mechanisms. Here we present the first narrowband, imaging polarimetry of a radio-loud Lya nebula, B3 J2330+3927 at z=3.09, with an embedded active galactic nucleus (AGN). The AGN lies near the blob's Lya emission peak and its radio lobes align roughly with the blob's major axis. With the SPOL polarimeter on the 6.5m MMT telescope, we map the total (Lya + continuum) polarization in a grid of circular apertures of radius 0.6" (4.4kpc), detecting a significant (>2sigma) polarization fraction P in nine apertures and achieving strong upper-limits (as low as 2%) elsewhere. P increases from <2% at ~5kpc from the blob center to ~17% at ~15-25kpc. The detections are distributed asymmetrically, roughly along the nebula's major axis. The polarization angles theta are mostly perpendicular to this axis. Comparing the Lya flux to that of the continuum, and conservatively assuming that the continuum is highly polarized (20-100%) and aligned with the total polarization, we place lower limits on the polarization of the Lya emission P(Lya) ranging from no significant polarization at ~5 kpc from the blob center to ~ 3--17% at 10--25kpc. We present stacking analyses on our ALMA deep 1.1 mm imaging in the SXDF using 1.6 {\mu}m and 3.6 {\mu}m selected galaxies in the CANDELS WFC3 catalog. We detect a stacked flux of ~0.03-0.05 mJy, corresponding to LIR < 10^11 Lsun and a star formation rate (SFR) of ~ 15 Msun/yr at z = 2. We find that galaxies brighter in the rest-frame near-infrared tend to be also brighter at 1.1 mm, and galaxies fainter than m[3.6um] = 23 do not produce detectable 1.1 mm emission. This suggests a correlation between stellar mass and SFR, but outliers to this correlation are also observed, suggesting strongly boosted star formation or extremely large extinction. We also find tendencies that redder galaxies and galaxies at higher redshifts are brighter at 1.1 mm. Our field contains z ~ 2.5 H-alpha emitters and a bright single-dish source. However, we do not find evidence of bias in our results caused by the bright source. By combining the fluxes of sources detected by ALMA and fluxes of faint sources detected with stacking, we recover a 1.1 mm surface brightness of up to 20.3 +/- 1.2 Jy/deg, comparable to the extragalactic background light measured by COBE. Based on the fractions of optically faint sources in our and previous ALMA studies and the COBE measurements, we find that approximately half of the cosmic star formation may be obscured by dust and missed by deep optical surveys, Much deeper and wider ALMA imaging is therefore needed to better constrain the obscured cosmic star formation history., Comment: accepted for publication in ApJ

The central structure in three of the brightest unlensed z=3-4 submillimeter galaxies are investigated through 0.015" - 0.05" (120 -- 360~pc) 860 micron continuum images obtained using the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA). The distribution in the central kpc in AzTEC1 and AzTEC8 are extremely complex, and they are composed of multiple ~200 pc clumps. AzTEC4 consists of two sources that are separated by ~1.5 kpc, indicating a mid-stage merger. The peak star formation rate densities in the central clumps are ~300 - 3000 Msun/yr/kpc^2, suggesting regions with extreme star formation near the Eddington Limit. By comparing the flux obtained by ALMA and Submillimeter Array (SMA), we find that 68-90% of the emission is extended (> 1 kpc) in AzTEC 4 and 8. For AzTEC1, we identify at least 11 additional compact (~200 pc) clumps in the extended 3 - 4 kpc region. Overall, the data presented here suggest that the luminosity surface densities observed at < 150 pc scales are roughly similar to that observed in local ULIRGs, as in the eastern nucleus of Arp 220.
