Typically, integrated radio frequency continuum spectra of supernova remnants (SNRs) exhibit a power-law form due to their synchrotron emission. In numerous cases, these spectra show an exponential turnover, long assumed due to thermal free-free absorption in the interstellar medium. We use a compilation of Galactic radio continuum SNR spectra, with and without turnovers, to constrain the distribution of the absorbing ionized gas. We introduce a novel parameterization of SNR spectra in terms of a characteristic frequency v_*, which depends both on the absorption turnover frequency and the power-law slope. Normalizing to v_* and to the corresponding flux density, S_*, we demonstrate that the stacked spectra of our sample reveal a similarity in behavior with low scatter (r.m.s. ~15%), and a unique exponential drop-off fully consistent with the predictions of a free-free absorption process. Observed SNRs, whether exhibiting spectral turnovers or not, appear to be spatially well mixed in the Galaxy without any evident segregation between them. Moreover, their Galactic distribution does not show a correlation with general properties such as heliocentric distance or Galactic longitude, as might have been expected if the absorption were due to a continuous distribution of ionized gas. However, it naturally arises if the absorbers are discretely distributed, as suggested by early low-frequency observations. Modeling based on HII regions tracking Galactic spiral arms successfully reproduces the patchy absorption observed to date. While more extensive statistical datasets should yield more precise spatial models of the absorbing gas distribution, our present conclusion regarding its inhomogeneity will remain robust., Comment: Accepted for A&A. The prominent radio source Hercules A features complex structures in its radio lobes. Although it is one of the most comprehensively studied sources in the radio sky, the origin of the ring structures in the Hercules A radio lobes remains an open question. We present the first sub-arcsecond angular resolution images at low frequencies (<300 MHz) of Hercules A, made with the International LOFAR Telescope. With the addition of data from the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array, we mapped the structure of the lobes from 144 MHz to 7 GHz. We explore the origin of the rings within the lobes of Hercules A, and test whether their properties are best described by a shock model, where shock waves are produced by the jet propagating in the radio lobe, or by an inner-lobe model, where the rings are formed by decelerated jetted plasma. From spectral index mapping our large frequency coverage reveals that the curvature of the different ring spectra increases with distance away from the central active galactic nucleus. We demonstrate that the spectral shape of the rings is consistent with synchrotron aging, which speaks in favor of an inner-lobe model where the rings are formed from the deposition of material from past periods of intermittent core activity., Comment: Accepted for a special issue of A&A on sub-arcsecond imaging with LOFAR

We have identified a new supernova remnant (SNR), G51.04+0.07 (G51.04), using observations at 74 MHz from the VLA Low-Frequency Sky Survey Redux. Earlier, higher frequency radio continuum, recombination line, and infrared data had correctly inferred the presence of nonthermal radio emission within a large complex including ionised nebulae and active star formation. However, our observations have allowed us to redefine at least one SNR as a relatively small source (7'.5 x 3' in size) located at the southern periphery of the originally defined SNR candidate. The integrated flux density of G51.04 at 74 MHz is 6.1 +/- 0.8 Jy, while its radio continuum spectrum has a slope alpha=-0.52 +/- 0.05, typical of a shell-type remnant. We also measured spatial variations in the spectral index between 74 and 1400~MHz across the source, ranging from a steeper spectrum (alpha~-0.50) coincident with the brightest emission to a flatter component (alpha~-0.30) in the surrounding fainter region. To probe the interstellar medium into which the redefined SNR is likely evolving, we have analysed the surrounding atomic and molecular gas using the 21~cm neutral hydrogen (HI) and 13CO (J=1-0) emissions. We found that G51.04 is confined within an HI cavity and that its radio emission is consistent with the remains of a stellar explosion that occurred ~6300 yr ago at a distance of ~7.7 kpc. Kinematic data suggest that the newly discovered SNR lies in front of HII regions in the complex, consistent with the lack of a low frequency turnover in the continuum spectrum. The CO observations revealed molecular material that traces the central and northern parts of G51.04. The interaction between the cloud and the radio source is not conclusive. The relatively low flux density (~1.5 Jy at 1400 MHz) of G51.04 is consistent with many similar SNRs hidden along complex lines of sight towards inner Galactic emission complexes., Comment: 8 pages, 7 figures. A community meeting on the topic of "Radio Astronomy in the LSST Era" was hosted by the National Radio Astronomy Observatory in Charlottesville, VA (2013 May 6--8). The focus of the workshop was on time domain radio astronomy and sky surveys. For the time domain, the extent to which radio and visible wavelength observations are required to understand several classes of transients was stressed, but there are also classes of radio transients for which no visible wavelength counterpart is yet known, providing an opportunity for discovery. From the LSST perspective, the LSST is expected to generate as many as 1 million alerts nightly, which will require even more selective specification and identification of the classes and characteristics of transients that can warrant follow up, at radio or any wavelength. The LSST will also conduct a deep survey of the sky, producing a catalog expected to contain over 38 billion objects in it. Deep radio wavelength sky surveys will also be conducted on a comparable time scale, and radio and visible wavelength observations are part of the multi-wavelength approach needed to classify and understand these objects. Radio wavelengths are valuable because they are unaffected by dust obscuration and, for galaxies, contain contributions both from star formation and from active galactic nuclei. The workshop touched on several other topics, on which there was consensus including the placement of other LSST "Deep Drilling Fields," inter-operability of software tools, and the challenge of filtering and exploiting the LSST data stream. There were also topics for which there was insufficient time for full discussion or for which no consensus was reached, which included the procedures for following up on LSST observations and the nature for future support of researchers desiring to use LSST data products., Comment: Conference summary, 29 pages, 1 figure; to be published in the Publ. We investigated in detail the morphology at low radio frequencies of the supernova remnant IC443 and accurately established its radio continuum spectral properties. We used the VLA in multiple configurations to produce high resolution radio images of IC443 at 74 and 330 MHz. The changes with position in the radio spectral index were correlated with data in near infrared from 2MASS, in gamma-rays from VERITAS, and with the molecular 12^CO line emission. The new image at 74 MHz has HPBW=35", rms=30 mJy/beam and at 330 MHz HPBW= 17" and rms=1.7 mJy/beam. The integrated flux densities for the whole SNR are S_74MHz=470+/-51 Jy and S_330MHz=248+/-15 Jy. For the pulsar wind nebula associated with the compact source CXOUJ061705.3+222127, we calculated S_330MHz=0.23+/-0.05 Jy, S_1420MHz=0.20+/-0.04 Jy, and alpha~0.0. Substantial variations are observed in spectral index between 74 and 330 MHz across IC443. The flattest spectral components (-0.25< alpha<-0.05) coincide with the brightest parts of the SNR along the eastern border, with an impressive agreement with ionic lines as observed in the 2MASS J and H bands. This result strongly suggests that the passage of a fast dissociating J-type shock across the interacting molecular cloud dissociated the molecules and ionized the gas. We therefore conclude that thermal absorption at 74 MHz is responsible for the localized spectral index flattening observed along the eastern border of IC443. The diffuse interior of IC443 has a spectrum steeper than found anywhere in the SNR (-0.85

This paper presents a search for radio transients at a frequency of 73.8 MHz (4 m wavelength) using the all-sky imaging capabilities of the Long Wavelength Demonstrator Array (LWDA). The LWDA was a 16-dipole phased array telescope, located on the site of the Very Large Array in New Mexico. The field of view of the individual dipoles was essentially the entire sky, and the number of dipoles was sufficiently small that a simple software correlator could be used to make all-sky images. From 2006 October to 2007 February, we conducted an all-sky transient search program, acquiring a total of 106 hr of data; the time sampling varied, being 5 minutes at the start of the program and improving to 2 minutes by the end of the program. We were able to detect solar flares, and in a special-purpose mode, radio reflections from ionized meteor trails during the 2006 Leonid meteor shower. We detected no transients originating outside of the solar system above a flux density limit of 500 Jy, equivalent to a limit of no more than about 10^{-2} events/yr/deg^2, having a pulse energy density >~ 1.5 x 10^{-20} J/m^2/Hz at 73.8 MHz for pulse widths of about 300 s. This event rate is comparable to that determined from previous all-sky transient searches, but at a lower frequency than most previous all-sky searches. We believe that the LWDA illustrates how an all-sky imaging mode could be a useful operational model for low-frequency instruments such as the Low Frequency Array, the Long Wavelength Array station, the low-frequency component of the Square Kilometre Array, and potentially the Lunar Radio Array., Comment: 20 pages; accepted for publication in AJ

This paper considers the suitability of a number of emerging and future instruments for the study of radio recombination lines (RRLs) at frequencies below 200 MHz. These lines arise only in low-density regions of the ionized interstellar medium, and they may represent a frequency-dependent foreground for next-generation experiments trying to detect H I signals from the Epoch of Reionization and Dark Ages ("21-cm cosmology"). We summarize existing decametre-wavelength observations of RRLs, which have detected only carbon RRLs. We then show that, for an interferometric array, the primary instrumental factor limiting detection and study of the RRLs is the areal filling factor of the array. We consider the Long Wavelength Array (LWA-1), the LOw Frequency ARray (LOFAR), the low-frequency component of the Square Kilometre Array (SKA-lo), and a future Lunar Radio Array (LRA), all of which will operate at decametre wavelengths. These arrays offer digital signal processing, which should produce more stable and better defined spectral bandpasses; larger frequency tuning ranges; and better angular resolution than that of the previous generation of instruments that have been used in the past for RRL observations. Detecting Galactic carbon RRLs, with optical depths at the level of 10^-3, appears feasible for all of these arrays, with integration times of no more than 100 hr. The SKA-lo and LRA, and the LWA-1 and LOFAR at the lowest frequencies, should have a high enough filling factor to detect lines with much lower optical depths, of order 10^-4 in a few hundred hours. The amount of RRL-hosting gas present in the Galaxy at the high Galactic latitudes likely to be targeted in 21-cm cosmology studies is currently unknown. We have used archival 74 MHz VLA data spanning the last 15 years in combination with new data from the Long Wavelength Demonstrator Array (LWDA) and data from the literature covering the last 50 years to explore the evolution of Cas A at low radio frequencies. We find that the secular decrease of the flux density of Cas A at ~80 MHz is rather stable over five decades of time, decreasing at a rate of 0.7-0.8% yr^-1. This is entirely consistent with previous estimates at frequencies as low as 38 MHz, indicating that the secular decrease is roughly the same at low frequencies, at least between 38 and 80 MHz. We also find strong evidence for as many as four modes of flux density oscillation about the slower secular decrease with periods of 3.10+/-0.02$ yr, 5.1+/-0.3 yr, 9.0+/-0.2 yr, and 24+/-2 yr. These are also consistent with fluctuations seen previously to occur on scales of a few years. These results provide compelling motivation for a thorough low frequency monitoring campaign of Cas A to constrain the nature and physical origins of these fluctuations, and to be able to better predict the flux density of Cas A at any given epoch so that it may be used as a reliable low frequency calibrator., Comment: accepted for publication in AJ
