The Antares nebula is a peculiar emission nebula seen in numerous Fe II lines and in radio free-free emission, probably associated with the H II region caused by alpha Sco B in the wind of alpha Sco A. We report on the discovery of six new ZZ Ceti stars. They were selected as candidates based on preparatory photometric observations of objects from the Hamburg Quasar Survey (HQS), and based on the spectra of the Supernova Ia Progenitor Survey (SPY). Time-series photometry of 19 candidate stars was carried out at the Nordic Optical Telescope (NOT) at Roque de Los Muchachos Observatory, Spain. We probe the evolution of the fine-structure constant, alpha, with cosmic time. Accurate positions of the FeII lines 1608, 2382,and 2600 A are measured in the z = 1.84 absorption system from a high-resolution (FWHM = 3.8 km/s) and high signal-to-noise (S/N >= 100) spectrum of the quasar Q1101-264 (z_em = 2.15, V = 16.0), integrated for 15.4 hours. The Single Ion Differential alpha Measurement (SIDAM) procedure and the Delta chi^2 method are used to set constraints on Delta alpha/alpha. We have found a relative radial velocity shift between the 1608 A and 2382,2600 A lines of Delta v = -180 +/- 85 m/s (both random and systematic errors are included), which, if real, would correspond to Delta alpha/alpha = (5.4 +/- 2.5) 10^{-6} (1sigma C.L.). Considering the strong implications of a such variability, additional observations with comparable accuracy at redshift z ~ 1.8 are required to confirm this result., 8 pages, 5 figures, accepted for publication as a research note in A&A

We present a detailed spectroscopic analysis of the stars with helium-dominated spectra in the ESO Supernova Ia Progenitor Survey (SPY). Atmospheric parameters, masses, and abundances of trace hydrogen are determined and discussed in the context of spectral evolution of white dwarfs. Our final sample contains 71 objects, of which 6 are new detections and 14 are reclassified from DB to DBA because of the presence of H lines. 55% of the DB sample show hydrogen and are thus DBA, a significantly higher fraction than found before. The large incidence of DBA, and the derived total hydrogen masses are compatible with the scenario that DBs ``reappear'' around 30000 K from the DB gap by mixing and diluting a thin hydrogen layer of the order of E-15 Msun. This hydrogen mass is then during the evolution continuously increased by interstellar accretion. There are indications that the accretion rate increases smoothly with age or decreasing temperature, a trend which continuous even below the current low temperature limit (Dufour 2006). A remaining mystery is the low accretion rate of H compared to that of Ca observed in the DBZA, but a stellar wind extending down to the lowest temperatures with decreasing strength might be part of the solution., Comment: accepted for publication in Astronomy and Astrophysics

The shape of the UV ionizing background is reconstructed from optically thin metal absorption-line systems identified in spectra of HE2347-4342, Q1157+3143, and HS1700+6416 in the redshift interval 1.8 < z < 2.9. The systems are analyzed by means of the Monte Carlo Inversion method completed with the spectral shape recovering procedure. The UVB spectral shape fluctuates at 2.4 < z < 2.9 mostly due to radiative transfer processes in the clumpy IGM. At z < 1.8, the IGM becomes almost transparent both in the HI and HeII Lyman continua and the variability of the spectral shape comes from diversity of spectral indices describing the QSO/AGN intrinsic radiation. At z > 2.4, the recovered spectral shapes show intensity depression between 3 and 4 Ryd due to HeII Ly-alpha absorption in the IGM clouds (line blanketing) and continuous medium (true Gunn-Petersen effect). The mean HeII Ly-alpha opacity estimated from the depth of this depression corresponds within 1-2sigma to the values directly measured from the HI/HeII Ly-alpha forest towards the quasars studied. The observed scatter in eta = N(HeII)/N(HI) and anti-correlation between N(HI) and eta can be explained by the combined action of variable spectral softness and differences in the mean gas density between the absorbing clouds. Neither of the recovered spectral shapes show features which can be attributed to the putative input of radiation from soft sources like starburst galaxies., 20 pages, 20 figures. We study metal abundances in the z=0.9313 damped Lya system observed in the two lines-of-sight, A and B, toward the gravitationally-lensed double QSO HE0512-3329. Spatially resolved STIS spectra constrain the neutral-gas column density to be LogN(HI)=20.5 in both Aand B. UVES spectra (spectral resolution FWHM=9.8 km/s) show, in contrast, significant line-of-sight differences in the column densities of MnII and FeII; these are not due to observational systematics. We find that [Mn/H]=-1.44 and [Fe/H]=-1.52 in damped Lya system A, while [Mn/H]=-0.98 and [Fe/H]>-1.32, and possibly as high as [Fe/H] approx. -1 in damped Lya system B. A careful assessment of possible systematic errors leads us to conclude that these transverse differences are significant at a 5 sigma level or greater. Although nucleosynthesis effects may also be at play, we favor differential dust-depletion as the main mechanism producing the observed abundance gradient. The transverse separation is 5 kpc at the redshift of the absorber, which is also likely to be the lensing galaxy. The derived abundances therefore probe two opposite sides of a single galaxy hosting both damped Lya systems. This is the first time firm abundance constraints have been obtained for a single damped system probed by two lines-of-sight. Verification of theoretical predictions of an oscillating behavior of the fine-structure constant alpha with cosmic time requires high precision Delta alpha/alpha measurements at individual redshifts, while in earlier studies the mean Delta alpha/alpha values averaged over wide redshift intervals were usually reported. This requirement can be met via the single ion differential alpha measurement (SIDAM) procedure proposed in Levshakov et al. (2005). We apply the SIDAM to the FeII lines associated with the damped Ly-alpha system observed at z=1.15 in the spectrum of HE0515-4414. The weighted mean calculated on base of carefully selected 34 FeII pairs {1608,X} (X = 2344, 2374, and 2586 A) is = (-0.07+/-0.84) 10^{-6} (1sigma C.L.). The precision of this estimate improves by a factor 2 the previous one reported for the same system by Quast et al. (2004). We report on high resolution spectra of the bright QSO HS0747+4259 (zem = 1.90, V = 15.8) observed to search for intermediate redshift OVI absorption systems. The spectra were obtained by means of the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (STIS) at the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) and the High Resolution Echelle Spectrometer (HIRES) at the W. M. Keck telescope. We identify 16 OVI systems in the range 1.07 3 Ryd compared to the model spectrum of Haardt and Madau (1996). This is in line with the observational evidence of a deficiency of strong Ly-alpha absorbers with N(HI) > 10^{15} cm^{-2}, at z < 2. The UV background shows significant local variations: the spectral shape estimated at z = 1.59 differs from that obtained at z = 1.81 and 1.73. A possible cause of these variations is the presence of a QSO/AGN at z ~= 1.54-1.59 close to the line of sight. No features favoring the input of stellar radiation to the ionizing background are detected, limiting the escape fraction of the galactic UV photons to f_esc < 0.05., 14 pages, 7 figures, 5 tables; accepted for publication in A&A

Spectroscopy of QSO absorption lines provides essential observational input for the study of nucleosynthesis and chemical evolution of galaxies at high redshift. But new observations may indicate that present chemical abundance data are biased due to deficient spectral resolution and unknown selection effects: Recent high-resolution spectra reveal the hitherto unperceived chemical nonuniformity of a molecule-bearing damped Lyman-alpha (DLA) system, and the still ongoing H/ESO DLA survey produces convincing evidence for the effect of dust attenuation. We present a revised analysis of the moleculecular hydrogen-bearing DLA complex toward the QSO HE 0515-4414 showing nonuniform differential depletion of chemical elements onto dust grains, and introduce the H/ESO DLA survey and its implications. Conclusively, we aim at starting an unbiased chemical abundance database established on high-resolution spectroscopic observations. Using an artificial HI Lyman alpha spectrum we simulate the corresponding HeII forest with fixed values of eta and a Doppler parameter consisting of a thermal and a turbulent part. In addition metal lines with line strengths and line density as expected in the case of HS 1700+6416 are superimposed. FUSE-like noise is added. The analysis of the simulated spectra in terms of Doppler profiles recovers the input eta = N(HeII)/N(HI) with a scatter by a factor of 10. About 10 % have significantly lower eta-values for various reasons. The majority of the extremely high eta-values (up to 1000) are evidently caused by metal lines. We conclude that part of the scatter in eta of previous analyses of the HeII forest in HE 2347-4342 can be regarded as an artifact. We report on a large survey for double degenerate (DD) binaries as potential progenitors of type Ia supernovae with the UVES spectrograph at the ESO VLT (SN Ia Progenitor surveY - SPY). About 560 white dwarfs were checked for radial velocity variations until now. We have started a large survey for double degenerate (DD) binaries as potential progenitors of type Ia supernovae with the UVES spectrograph at the ESO VLT (ESO SN Ia Progenitor surveY - SPY). About 400 white dwarfs were checked for radial velocity variations during the first 15 months of this project, twice the number of white dwarfs investigated during the last 20 years. We give an overview of the SPY project and present first results Fifty four new DDs have been discovered, seven of them double lined (only 18 and 6 objects of these groups were known before, respectively). The final sample is expected to contain 150 to 200 DDs. Eight new pre-cataclysmic binaries were also detected. SPY is the first DD survey which encompasses also non-DA white dwarfs. SPY produces an immense, unique sample of very high resolution white dwarf spectra, which provides a lot of spin-off opportunities. We describe our projects to exploit the SPY sample for the determination of basic parameters, kinematics, and rotational velocities of white dwarfs. We use digitized Schmidt direct and prism plates taken for the northern hemisphere Hamburg Quasar Survey (HQS) to obtain optical identifications for all high galactic latitude X-ray sources in the ROSAT Bright Source Catalogue (RASS-BSC) at |b|>=30 deg and DEC >= 0deg. In this part of the sky the RASS-BSC contains about 5300 X-ray sources. We present a new sample of 415 bright QSOs and Seyfert~1 nuclei drawn from the Hamburg/ESO survey (HES). The sample is spectroscopically 99 % complete and well-defined in terms of flux and redshift limits. Optical magnitudes are in the interval 13 < B_J < 17.5, redshifts range within 0< z < 3.2. More than 50 % of the objects in the sample are new discoveries. We describe the selection techniques and discuss sample completeness and potential selection effects. There is no evidence for redshift-dependent variations of completeness; in particular, low-redshift QSOs - notoriously missed by other optical surveys - are abundant in this sample, since no discrimination against extended sources is imposed. For the same reason, the HES is not biased against multiply imaged QSOs due to gravitational lensing. The sample forms the largest homogeneous set of bright QSOs currently in existence, useful for a variety of statistical studies. We have redetermined the bright part of the optical quasar number-magnitude relation. We confirm that the Palomar-Green survey is significantly incomplete, but that its degree of incompleteness has recently been overestimated., 12 pages, accepted by A&A

Detailed analysis of the spectral lines from two low redshift damped Lyman alpha absorbers (DLA) confirms that they are a heterogeneous population. Both systems have low metal abundances of approximately 0.05 to 0.1 solar. The abundance pattern of the DLA at z=1.15 towards HE 0515-4414 shows dust depletion comparable to that found in our Galaxy, while the system at z=0.68 towards HE 1122-1649 shows abundance ratios resembling metal-poor halo stars with no dust depletion, for a comparable HI column. Constraints for N/Fe and N/Si also hint at z=0.68 DLA as a galaxy with recent star formation. The trend of increasing CI/HI with decreasing z is discussed. Only weak absorption from highly-ionized species associated with the DLA at moderate z have been detected and it probably originates in regions distinct from the low ionization gas. The low-ion profiles show very complex structures and are too large to be explained by the rotation of a disk: the system at z=0.68 spans over approximately 300 km/s and the z=1.15 DLA presents substructure over more than 700 km/s, the largest velocity extent found up to date for a DLA., Comment: 35 pages, 8 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

We present an analysis of 40 cool helium-rich white dwarfs found in the Hamburg/ESO survey. They were selected for follow-up spectroscopy because of their U-B colour below -0.18, the absence of strong absorption lines, and a continuum shape similar to that of a quasar. Effective temperatures for individual stars were determined by fitting model atmospheres of nearly pure helium with a small admixture of hydrogen. As a consequence of the selection criteria all but one sample stars have Teff below 20000 K. Four stars clearly show helium and hydrogen lines in their spectra. In the spectra of another three, helium, hydrogen, and metal lines can be detected. For these stars hydrogen and metal abundances were also determined by fitting appropriate model atmospheres containing these elements. Seven sample stars most likely have helium-rich atmospheres but do not show any helium lines. They either have featureless spectra or show calcium lines., Comment: in press

We present the analysis of a new flux-limited sample of bright quasars and Seyfert 1 galaxies in an effective area of 611 square deg, drawn from the Hamburg/ESO survey. We confirm recent claims that bright quasars have a higher surface density than previously thought. Special care was taken to avoid morphological and photometric biases against low-redshift quasars, and about 50 % of the sample objects are at z < 0.3, spanning a range of three decades in luminosity. While our derived space densities for low-luminosity Seyfert 1 nuclei are consistent with those found in the literature, we find that luminous QSOs, M_B < -24, are much more numerous in the local universe than previous surveys indicated. The optical luminosity functions of Seyfert 1 nuclei and QSOs join smoothly, and if the host galaxy contributions are taken into account, a single power-law of slope alpha = -2.2 describes the combined local luminosity function adequately, over the full range in absolute magnitude. Comparing our data with published results at higher redshifts, we can rule out pure luminosity evolution as an acceptable parametrisation; the luminosity function of quasars changes shape and slope with z, in the sense that the most luminous quasars show the weakest evolution., 10 pages, 6 PostScript figures, uses A&A l-aa.sty

We report on observations of redshifted HeII 304 A absorption in the QSO HE 2347-4342 (z=2.885, V=16.1) with the GHRS on board HST (FWHM=0.7 A). At the expected position of HeII 304 A absorption, HE 2347-4342 is the most UV-bright high redshift QSO discovered so far. We show that the HeII opacity as a function of redshift is patchy showing spectral regions with low HeII opacity (voids) and regions with high HeII opacity (troughs) and no detectable flux. Combination with high-resolution optical spectra of the Ly_alpha forest using CASPEC at the ESO 3.6m telescope shows that the voids can be explained either exclusively by Ly_alpha forest cloud absorption with a moderate N(HeII)/N(HI) ratio of 100 and turbulent line broadening or by a combination of Ly_alpha forest with N(HeII)/N(HI)=45 and thermal broadening plus a diffuse medium with tau_GP_HeII=0.3. Thus a strict upper limit to a diffuse medium is Omega_diff 2.8 is required. In case of photoionization, the troughs would require a diffuse component with a density close to Omega = 0.059 h_50^(-1.5), i.e. all baryons in the universe, which is inconsistent with the observed absence of such a component in the voids. A tentative interpretation is that we observe the epoch of partial HeII reionization of the universe with patches not yet reionized. In that case a diffuse component with Omega_diff >= 1.3 10^(-4) h_50^(-1) would be sufficient to explain the ``trough'' opacity., 12 pages, 6 figures, uses A&A l-aa.sty. To appear in A&A

Four magnetic white dwarfs have been found in the course of the Hamburg/ESO Survey for bright QSOs. The objects have been selected as QSO candidate on the basis of its blue continuum and the apparent absence of strong hydrogen or helium lines. One star, HE1211-1707, shows a rather fast spectral variability: both the strength and the position of the shallow absorption features change on a time scale of 20 minutes. We interpret this variability as being due to a magnetic field on the surface of a rotating white dwarf, having a relatively uniform magnetic field on one hemisphere and a much larger spread of field strengths visible during other phases of the rotational period. All attempts to determine the magnetic field structure in detail with the help of synthetic spectra have failed so far because the star must have a rather complicated field geometry. However, both the optical and the UV spectra indicate that a significant part of the surface is dominated by a magnetic field strength of about 80 MG. The spectrum of HE 0127-3110 is also rotationally modulated. This star (approximate range of magnetic fields: 85-345 MG) as well as HE 2201-2250 (a spectroscopic twin of HE 0127-3110) and HE 0000-3430 (43-118 MG) could be reasonably well reproduced with the help of theoretical spectra calculated assuming magnetic dipoles which are offset by 0.1 and 0.2 stellar radii along the magnetic axis. We present FUSE observations of the HeII Lyman alpha forest in the redshift range 2.3 < z < 2.7 towards HS1700+6416. Between October 2002 and February 2003, the brightness of the QSO increased by a factor 2. Therefore, with an exposure time of 203 ks during orbital night, the quality of the resulting spectrum is comparable to the HE2347-4342 data. This second line of sight with a resolved HeII Lyman alpha forest reveals a similar variation of several orders of magnitude of the column density ratio eta = N(HeII)/N(HI) and confirms the results of previous studies. We report on systematic radial velocity surveys for white dwarf - white dwarf binaries (double degenerates - DDs) including SPY (ESO Supernovae Ia progenitor survey) recently carried out at the VLT. A large sample of DD will allow us to put strong constrains on the phases of close binary evolution of the progenitor systems and to perform an observational test of the DD scenario for supernovae of type Ia. We explain how parameters of the binaries can be derived from various methods.
