We present extensive ugrizYHJK photometry and optical spectroscopy of SN 2005gj obtained by the SDSS-II and CSP Supernova Projects, which give excellent coverage during the first 150 days after the time of explosion. These data show that SN 2005gj is the second clear case, after SN 2002ic, of a thermonuclear explosion in a dense circumstellar environment. Both the presence of singly and doubly ionized iron-peak elements (FeIII and weak SII, SiII) near maximum light as well as the spectral evolution show that SN 2002ic-like events are Type Ia explosions. Independent evidence comes from the exponential decay in luminosity of SN 2005gj, pointing to an exponential density distribution of the ejecta. The interaction of the supernova ejecta with the dense circumstellar medium is stronger than in SN 2002ic: (1) the supernova lines are weaker; (2) the Balmer emission lines are more luminous; and (3) the bolometric luminosity is higher close to maximum light. The velocity evolution of the Halpha components suggest that the CSM around SN 2005gj is clumpy and it has a flatter density distribution compared with the steady wind solution, in agreement with SN 2002ic. We present phase resolved optical photometry and spectroscopy of the accreting millisecond pulsar HETE J1900.1-2455. Our R-band light curves exhibit a sinusoidal modulation, at close to the orbital period, which we initially attributed to X-ray heating of the irradiated face of the secondary star. However, further analysis reveals that the source of the modulation is more likely due to superhumps caused by a precessing accretion disc. Doppler tomography of a broad Halpha emission line reveals an emission ring, consistent with that expected from an accretion disc. Using the velocity of the emission ring as an estimate for the projected outer disc velocity, we constrain the maximum projected velocity of the secondary to be 200 km/s, placing a lower limit of 0.05 Msun on the secondary mass. For a 1.4 Msun primary, this implies that the orbital inclination is low, < 20 degrees. Utilizing the observed relationship between the secondary mass and orbital period in short period cataclysmic variables, we estimate the secondary mass to be ~0.085 Msun, which implies an upper limit of ~2.4 Msun for the primary mass., 8 pages, 6 figures; Accepted for publication in MNRAS. We report on two recent z~4 gamma-ray bursts (GRBs), GRB 060206 and GRB 060210, for which we have obtained well-sampled optical light curves. Our data, combined with early optical data reported in the literature, shows unusual behavior for both afterglows. In R-band GRB 060206 (z=4.045) experienced a slow early decay, followed by a rapid increase in brightness by factor ~2.5 about 1 hour after the burst. Its afterglow then faded in a broken power-law fashion, with a smooth break at t_b=0.6 days, but with additional, less dramatic (~10%) ``bumps and wiggles'', well detected in the densely sampled light curve. The R-band afterglow of GRB 060210 (z=3.91) is also unusual: the light curves was more or less flat between 60 and 300 sec after the burst, followed by ~70% increase at ~600 sec after the burst, after which the light curve declined as a t^{-1.3} power-law. Despite earlier reports to the contrary, we find that for GRB 060206 X-rays also more or less follow the optical decay, but with significant variations on short timescales. However, the X-ray afterglow is contaminated by a nearby, variable source, which especially at late times obscures the behavior of the X-ray afterglow. We argue that ``anomalous'' optical afterglows are likely to be the norm, and that the rapid variations often seen in Swift-XRT data would also be seen in the optical light curves, given good enough sampling. As a result, some of the often employed procedures, such as deriving the jet opening angle using a smooth broken power-law fit to the optical light curves, in many cases might have a poor statistical significance. We argue that the early increase in brighness for both bursts might be due to the turn-on of the external shock. We identify a light echo candidate from Hubble Space Telescope (HST) imaging of NGC 2441, the host galaxy of the Type Ia supernova 1995E. From the echo's angular size and the estimated distance to the host galaxy, we find a distance of 207 +/- 35 pc between the dust and the site of the supernova. If confirmed, this echo brings the total number of observed non-historical Type Ia light echoes to three -- the others being SN 1991T and SN 1998bu -- suggesting they are not uncommon. We compare the properties of the known Type Ia supernova echoes and test models of light echoes developed by Patat et al. (2005). HST photometry of the SN 1991T echo shows a fading which is consistent with scattering by dust distributed in a sphere or shell around the supernova. Light echoes have the potential to answer questions about the progenitors of Type Ia supernovae and more effort should be made for their detection given the importance of Type Ia supernovae to measurements of dark energy., Comment: 19 pages, 4 postscript figures, 3 tables, accepted for publication in the ApJ

We report on the discovery of strongly variable FeII and MgII absorption lines seen at z=1.48 in the spectra of the z=4.05 GRB 060206 obtained between 4.13 to 7.63 hours (observer frame) after the burst. In particular, the FeII line equivalent width (EW) decayed rapidly from 1.72+-0.25 AA to 0.28+-0.21 AA, only to increase to 0.96+-0.21 AA in a later date spectrum. The MgII doublet shows even more complicated evolution: the weaker line of the doublet drops from 2.05+-0.25 AA to 0.92+-0.32 AA, but then more than doubles to 2.47+-0.41 AA in later data. The ratio of the EWs for the MgII doublet is also variable, being closer to 1:1 (saturated regime) when the lines are stronger and becoming closer to 2:1 (unsaturated regime) when the lines are weaker, consistent with expectations based on atomic physics. We have investigated and rejected the possibility of any instrumental or atmospheric effects causing the observed strong variations. Our discovery of clearly variable intervening FeII and MgII lines lends very strong support to their scenario, in which the characteristic size of intervening patches of MgII ``clouds'' is comparable to the GRB beam size, i.e, about 10^16 cm. We study the effect of environment on the properties of type Ia supernovae by analyzing the integrated spectra of 57 host galaxies. Integrated spectra of galaxies best represent the global properties of the host and can be used to directly compare with spectra of high-redshift galaxies. From the spectra we deduce the metallicity, current star-formation rate and star-formation history of the hosts and compare these to the supernova decline rate which is an indicator of the luminosity. Our results show no significant correlation between spiral host galaxy metallicity and SNIa light curve decline rate. The Hydrogen-alpha equivalent width (EW) of the host galaxy is an indicator the current star-formation rate compared to average rate in the past. We present time-resolved CCD photometry of V2275 Cyg 790 days after the nova outburst. The data show a 20% peak-to-peak oscillation with a period of 24 minutes. We present a long-slit spectrum of the Herbig-Haro object HH 111, obtained with SITS on the Hubble Space Telescope. This spectrum has a spectral resolution of approx. 50 km/s, so it gives a good picture of the kinematical properties of the observed object at very high angular resolution. We find that some of the knots along the jet are associated with sudden drops in the radial velocity (modulus), confirming that the emission from the knots is formed in shocks. We interprt the observed position-velocity diagrams in terms of a model of a jet from a variable source, and we attempt to carry out a reconstruction of the ejection variability necessary for reproducing the observed kinematical structure., Comment: 9 pages, 5 figures, ApJLett. accepted

Observations of the quiescent X-ray nova XTE J1118+480 with the new 6.5-m MMT have revealed that the velocity amplitude of the dwarf secondary is 698 +/- 14 km/s and the orbital period of the system is 0.17013 +/- 0.00010 d. The implied value of the mass function, f(M) = 6.00 +/- 0.36 solar masses, provides a hard lower limit on the mass of the compact primary that greatly exceeds the maximum allowed mass of a neutron star. Thus we conclude that the compact primary is a black hole. Among the eleven dynamically established black-hole X-ray novae, the large mass function of XTE J1118+480 is rivaled only by that of V404 Cyg. We estimate that the secondary supplies 34% +/- 8% of the total light at 5900A and that its spectral type is in the range K5V to M1V. A double-humped I-band light curve is probably due to ellipsoidal modulation, although this interpretation is not entirely secure because of an unusual 12-minute offset between the spectroscopic and photometric ephemerides. Assuming that the light curve is ellipsoidal, we present a provisional analysis which indicates that the inclination of the system is high and the mass of the black hole is correspondingly modest. The broad Balmer emission lines (FWHM = 2300-2900 km/s) also suggest a high inclination. We present $BVRI$ observations of the optical counterpart to the Gamma-Ray Burst (GRB) 990510 obtained with the Las Campanas 1.0-m telescope between 15 and 48 hours after the burst. The temporal analysis of the data indicates steepening decay, independent of wavelength, approaching asymptotically $t^{-0.76\pm 0.01}$ at early times ($t\ll 1 day)$ and $t^{-2.40\pm 0.02}$ at late times, with the break time at $t_0=1.57\pm 0.03 days$. GRB 990510 is the most rapidly fading of the well-documented GRB afterglows. It is also the first observed example of broad-band break for a GRB optical counterpart. The optical spectral energy distribution, corrected for significant Galactic reddening, is well fitted by a single power-law with $\nu^{-0.61\pm 0.12}$. However, when the $B$-band point is dropped from the fit, the power-law becomes $\nu^{-0.46\pm 0.08}$, indicating a possible deviation from the power-law in the spectrum, either intrinsic or due to additional extinction near the source or from an intervening galaxy at $z=1.62$. Following an approach by Paczy��ski & Stanek we compare red clump stars with parallaxes known to better than 10% in the Hipparcos catalog with the red clump stars observed in three fields in M31 using the HST. There are $\sim 600$ and $\sim 6,300$ such stars in the two data sets, respectively. The local red clump luminosity function is well represented by a Gaussian with the peak at $M_{I,m}=-0.23$, and the dispersion $��_{RC}\approx0.2 $mag. This allows a single step determination of the distance modulus to M31 $��_{0,M31} = 24.471\pm 0.035 \pm 0.045 $mag (statistical plus systematic error) and the corresponding distance $R_{M31}= 784\pm 13\pm 17 kpc$. The number of red clump stars is large enough that the formal statistical error in the distance is only $\lesssim 2$%. We also correct the treatment of the local interstellar extinction by Paczy��ski & Stanek and we obtain the Galactocentric distance modulus $��_{0,GC}=14.57 \pm0.04 \pm 0.04 $mag (statistical plus systematic error), and the corresponding Galactocentric distance $R_0=8.2 \pm0.15 \pm 0.15 kpc$., accepted by the ApJ Letters, 11 pages, 4 figures

We have coordinated Hubble Space Telescope photometry with ground-based discovery for three supernovae: two SN Ia near z~0.5 (SN 1997ce, SN 1997cj) and a third event at z=0.97 (SN 1997ck). The superb spatial resolution of HST separates each supernova from its host galaxy and leads to good precision in the light curves. The HST data combined with ground-based photometry provide good temporal coverage. We use these light curves and relations between luminosity, light curve shape, and color calibrated from low-z samples to derive relative luminosity distances which are accurate to 10% at z~0.5 and 20% at z=1. The redshift-distance relation is used to place constraints on the global mean matter density, Omega_matter, and the normalized cosmological constant, Omega_Lambda. When the HST sample is combined with the distance to SN 1995K (z=0.48), analyzed by the same precepts, it suggests that matter alone is insufficient to produce a flat Universe. Specifically, for Omega_matter+Omega_Lambda=1, Omega_matter is less than 1 with >95% confidence, and our best estimate of Omega_matter is -0.1 +/- 0.5 if Omega_Lambda=0. Although the present result is based on a very small sample whose systematics remain to be explored, it demonstrates the power of HST measurements for high redshift supernovae., Submitted to ApJ Letters, 3 figures, 1 plate, additional table
