1. Post Common Envelope Binaries from SDSS. V: Four eclipsing white dwarf main sequence binaries

Abstract: We identify SDSS011009.09+132616.1, SDSS030308.35+005444.1, SDSS143547.87+373338.5 and SDSS154846.00+405728.8 as four eclipsing white dwarf plus main sequence (WDMS) binaries from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey, and report on follow-up observations of these systems. Orbital periods and ephemerides have been established from multi-season photometry. SDSS1435+3733, with Porb=3h has the shortest orbital period of all known eclipsing WDMS binaries. Time-resolved spectroscopic observations have been obtained and the radial velocities of the secondary stars in all four systems were measured. A spectral decomposition/fitting technique was then employed to determine the white dwarf effective temperatures and surface gravities, as well as the spectral types of the companion stars. We used a light curve modeling code to further constrain the masses and radii of the components in all systems. All three DA white dwarfs have masses of Mwd~0.4-0.6Msun, in line with the expectations from close binary evolution. The DC white dwarf in SDSS0303+0054 has a mass of Mwd>0.85Msun, making it unusually massive for a post-common envelope system. Our new additions raise the number of known eclipsing WDMS binaries to fourteen, and we find that the average white dwarf mass in this sample is =0.57+/-0.16Msun, only slightly lower than the average mass of single white dwarfs. The majority of all eclipsing WDMS binaries contain low-mass (<0.6Msun) secondary stars, and will eventually provide valuable observational input for the calibration of the mass-radius relations of low-mass main sequence stars and of white dwarfs., Comment: 17 pages, 19 figures, 9 tables, accepted for publication in MNRAS

2. A planetary nebula around nova V458 Vul undergoing flash ionization

Abstract: Nova V458 Vul erupted on 2007 August 8th and reached a visual magnitude of 8.1 a few days later. H$\alpha$ images obtained six weeks before the outburst as part of the IPHAS galactic plane survey reveal an 18th magnitude progenitor surrounded by an extended nebula. Subsequent images and spectroscopy of the nebula reveal an inner nebular knot increasing rapidly in brightness due to flash ionization by the nova event. We derive a distance of 13 kpc based on light travel time considerations, which is supported by two other distance estimation methods. The nebula has an ionized mass of 0.2 M$_{\odot}$ and a low expansion velocity: this rules it out as ejecta from a previous nova eruption, and is consistent with it being a ~14,000 year old planetary nebula, probably the product of a prior common envelope (CE) phase of evolution of the binary system. The large derived distance means that the mass of the erupting WD component of the binary is high. We identify two possible evolutionary scenarios, in at least one of which the system is massive enough to produce a Type Ia supernova on merging., Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures. 3. Post Common Envelope Binaries from SDSS - III. Seven new orbital periods

Abstract: We present follow-up spectroscopy and photometry of 11 post common envelope binary (PCEB) candidates identified from multiple Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) spectroscopy in an earlier paper. Radial velocity measurements using the \Lines{Na}{I}{8183.27,8194.81} absorption doublet were performed for nine of these systems and provided measurements of six orbital periods in the range $\Porb= 2.7-17.4$ h. Three PCEB candidates did not show significant radial velocity variations in the follow-up data, and we discuss the implications for the use of SDSS spectroscopy alone to identify PCEBs. Differential photometry confirmed one of our spectroscopic orbital periods and provided one additional \Porb measurement. Binary parameters are estimated for the seven objects for which we have measured the orbital period and the radial velocity amplitude of the low-mass companion star, $K_\mathrm{sec}$. So far, we have published nine SDSS PCEBs orbital periods, all of them $\Porb<1$ d. We perform Monte-Carlo simulations and show that $3\sigma$ SDSS radial velocity variations should still be detectable for systems in the orbital period range of $\Porb\sim1-10$ days. Consequently, our results suggest that the number of PCEBs decreases considerably for $\Porb>1$ day, and that during the common envelope phase the orbital energy of the binary star is maybe less efficiently used to expell the envelope than frequently assumed., Comment: 13 pages, 8 figures, 5 tables Accepted in MNRAS

4. Orbital periods of cataclysmic variables identified by the SDSS. III. Time-series photometry obtained during the 2004/5 International Time Project on La Palma

Abstract: We present time resolved CCD photometry of 15 cataclysmic variables (CVs) identified by the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). The data were obtained as part of the 2004/05 International Time Programme on La Palma. We discuss the morphology of the light curves and the CV subtypes and give accurate orbital periods for 11 systems. Nine systems are found below the 2-3h orbital period gap, of which five have periods within a few minutes of the ~80min minimum orbital period. One system each is found within and above the gap. This confirms the previously noted trend for a large fraction of short-period systems among the SDSS CVs. Objects of particular interest are SDSSJ0901+4809 and SDSSJ1250+6655 which are deeply eclipsing. SDSSJ0854+3905 is a polar with an extremely modulated light curve, which is likely due to a mixture of cyclotron beaming and eclipses of the accretion region by the white dwarf. Abstract: The INT/WFC Photometric H-alpha Survey of the Northern Galactic Plane (IPHAS) is an imaging survey being carried out in H-alpha, r' and i' filters, with the Wide Field Camera (WFC) on the 2.5-metre Isaac Newton Telescope (INT) to a depth of r'=20 (10 sigma). The survey is aimed at revealing large scale structure in our local galaxy, and also the properties of key early and late populations making up the Milky Way. Mapping emission line objects enables a particular focus on objects in the young and old stages of stellar evolution ranging from early T-Tauri stars to late planetary nebulae. In this paper we present the IPHAS Initial Data Release, primarily a photometric catalogue of about 200 million unique objects, coupled with associated image data covering about 1600 square degrees in three passbands. We note how access to the primary data products has been implemented through use of standard virtual observatory publishing interfaces. Simple traditional web access is provided to the main IPHAS photometric catalogue, in addition to a number of common catalogues (such as 2MASS) which are of immediate relevance. Access through the AstroGrid VO Desktop opens up the full range of analysis options, and allows full integration with the wider range of data and services available through the Virtual Observatory. The IDR represents the largest dataset published primarily through VO interfaces to date, and so stands as an examplar of the future of survey data mining. Examples of data access are given, including a cross-matching of IPHAS photometry with sources in the UKIDSS Galactic Plane Survey that validates the existing calibration of the best data., Comment: 17 pages, 23 figures, MNRAS in press. 6. Post Common Envelope Binaries from SDSS. I: 101 white dwarf main sequence binaries with multiple SDSS spectroscopy

Abstract: We present a detailed analysis of 101 white dwarf-main sequence binaries (WDMS) from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) for which multiple SDSS spectra are available. We detect significant radial velocity variations in 18 WDMS, identifying them as post common envelope binaries (PCEBs) or strong PCEB candidates. Strict upper limits to the orbital periods are calculated, ranging from 0.43 to 7880 d. Given the sparse temporal sampling and relatively low spectral resolution of the SDSS spectra, our results imply a PCEB fraction of >=15% among the WDMS in the SDSS data base. Using a spectral decomposition/fitting technique we determined the white dwarf effective temperatures and surface gravities, masses, and secondary star spectral types for all WDMS in our sample. Two independent distance estimates are obtained from the flux scaling factors between the WDMS spectra, and the white dwarf models and main sequence star templates, respectively. Approximately one third of the systems in our sample show a significant discrepancy between the two distance estimates. In the majority of discrepant cases, the distance estimate based on the secondary star is too large. A possible explanation for this behaviour is that the secondary star spectral types that we determined from the SDSS spectra are systematically too early by 1-2 spectral classes. This behaviour could be explained by stellar activity, if covering a significant fraction of the star by cool dark spots will raise the temperature of the inter-spot regions. 7. HS1857+5144: A hot and young pre-cataclysmic variable

Abstract: We report the discovery of a new white dwarf/M dwarf binary, HS1857+5144, identified in the Hamburg Quasar Survey (HQS). Time-resolved optical spectroscopy and photometry were carried out to determine the properties of this new cataclysmic variable progenitor pre-CV). The light curves of HS1857+5144 display a sinusoidal variation with a period of Porb=383.52 min and peak-to-peak amplitudes of 0.7 mag and 1.1 mag in the B-band and R-band, respectively. The large amplitude of the brightness variation results from a reflection effect on the heated inner hemisphere of the companion star, suggesting a very high temperature of the white dwarf. Our radial velocity study confirms the photometric period as the orbital period of the system. A model atmosphere fit to the spectrum of the white dwarf obtained at minimum light provides limits to its mass and temperature of Mwd=~0.6-1.0 Msun and Twd=~70000-100000 K, respectively. The detection of HeII 4686 absorption classifies the primary star of HS1857+5144 as a DAO white dwarf. Combining the results from our spectroscopy and photometry, we estimate the mass of the companion star and the binary inclination to be Msec=~0.15-0.30 Msun and i=~45-55 deg, respectively. We classify HS1857+5144 as one of the youngest pre-CV known to date. The cooling age of the white dwarf suggests that the present system has just emerged from a common envelope phase ~10^5 yr ago. 8. SW Sextantis stars: the dominant population of CVs with orbital periods between 3-4 hours

Abstract: [Abridged] We present time-series optical photometry of five new CVs identified by the Hamburg Quasar Survey. The eclipses observed in HS 0129+2933, HS 0220+0603, and HS 0455+8315 provided very accurate orbital periods of 3.35129827(65), 3.58098501(34), and 3.56937674(26) h, respectively. HS 0805+3822 shows grazing eclipses and has a likely orbital period of 3.2169(2) h. Time-resolved optical spectroscopy of the new CVs (with the exception of HS 0805+3822) is also presented. Radial velocity studies provided an orbital period of 3.55 h for HS 1813+6122, which allowed us to identify the observed photometric signal at 3.39 h as a negative superhump wave. The spectroscopic behaviour clearly identifies these new CVs as new SW Sextantis stars. These new additions increase the number of known SW Sex stars to 35. Almost 40 per cent of the total SW Sex population do not show eclipses, invalidating the requirement of eclipses as a defining characteristic of the class and the models based on a high orbital inclination geometry alone. On the other hand, the predominance of orbital periods in the narrow 3-4.5 h range is becoming more pronounced. In fact, almost half the CVs which populate the 3-4.5 h period interval are definite members of the class. These statistics are confirmed by our results from the Hamburg Quasar Survey CVs. Remarkably, 54 per cent of the Hamburg nova-like variables have been identified as SW Sex stars with orbital periods in the 3-4.5 h range. The observation of this pile-up of systems close to the upper boundary of the period gap is difficult to reconcile with the standard theory of CV evolution, as the SW Sex stars are believed to have the highest mass transfer rates among CVs. 9. Observations of the 599 Hz Accreting X-ray Pulsar IGR J00291+5934 during the 2004 Outburst and in Quiescence

Abstract: We report on optical and NIR observations obtained during and after the 2004 December discovery outburst of the X-ray transient and accretion-powered millisecond pulsar IGR J00291+5934. Our observations monitored the evolution of the brightness and the spectral properties of J00291 during the outburst decay towards quiescence. We also present optical, NIR and Chandra observations obtained during true quiescence. Photometry of the field during outburst reveals an optical and NIR counterpart that brightened from R~23 to R~17 and from K=19 to K~16. Spectral analysis of the RIJHK broadband photometry shows excess in the NIR bands that may be due to synchrotron emission. The Halpha emission line profile suggests the orbital inclination is ~22-32 degrees. The preferred range for the reddening towards the source is 0.7 < E(B-V) < 0.9, which is equivalent to 4.06E21 cm^-2 < NH < 5.22E21 cm^-2. The Chandra observations of the pulsar in its quiescent state gave an unabsorbed 0.5-10 keV flux for the best-fitting power-law model to the source spectrum of (7.0 +/- 0.9)E-14 ergs/cm^2/s (adopting a hydrogen column of 4.6E21 cm^-2. The fit resulted in a power-law photon index of 2.4 +/- 0.5. The (R-K)o color observed during quiescence supports an irradiated donor star and accretion disk. We estimate a distance of 2 to 4 kpc towards J00291 by using the outburst X-ray light curve and the estimated critical X-ray luminosity necessary to keep the outer parts of the accretion disk ionized. Using the quiescent X-ray luminosity and the spin period, we constrain the magnetic field of the neutron star to be < 3E8 Gauss., Comment: 10 pages, 7 figures, 3 tables. 10. Spectroscopic search for new SW Sextantis stars in the 3-4 hour orbital period range -- I

Abstract: [Abridged] We report on time-resolved optical spectroscopy of ten non-eclipsing nova-like cataclysmic variables in the orbital period range between 3 and 4 hours. Of the ten systems so far observed, HL Aqr, BO Cet, AH Men, V380 Oph, AH Pic, and LN UMa are identified as new members of the SW Sex class. We present improved orbital period measurements for HL Aqr (Porb = 3.254 +- 0.001 h) and V380 Oph (Porb = 3.69857 +- 0.00002 h). BO Cet and V380 Oph exhibit emission-line flaring with periodicities of 20 min and 47 min, respectively. The Halpha line of HL Aqr shows significant blueshifted absorption modulated at the orbital period. Similarly to the emission S-wave of the high-inclination SW Sex stars, this absorption S-wave has its maximum blue velocity at orbital phase ~0.5. We estimate an orbital inclination for HL Aqr in the range 19 < i < 27 deg, which is much lower than that of the emission-dominated, non-eclipsing SW Sex stars (i ~ 60-70 deg). This gives rise to the interesting possibility of many low-inclination nova-likes actually being SW Sex stars, but with a very different spectroscopic appearance as they show significant absorption. The increasing blueshifted absorption with decreasing inclination points to the existence of a mass outflow with significant vertical motion. This six new additions to the SW Sex class increase the presence of non-eclipsing systems to about one third of the whole SW Sex population, which therefore makes the requirement of eclipses as a defining criterion for SW Sex membership no longer valid. 11. VLT/FORS spectroscopy of faint cataclysmic variables discovered by the Sloan Digital Sky Survey

Abstract: We present medium-resolution VLT/FORS2 spectroscopy of six cataclysmic variables discovered by the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. We determine orbital periods for SDSS J023322.61+005059.5 (96.08 +/- 0.09 min), SDSS J091127.36+084140.7 (295.74 +/- 0.22 min), SDSS J103533.02+055158.3 (82.10 +/- 0.09 min), and SDSS J121607.03+052013.9 (most likely 98.82 +/- 0.16 min, but the one-day aliases at 92 min and 107 min are also possible) using radial velocities measured from their H_alpha and H_beta emission lines. Three of the four orbital periods measured here are close to the observed 75--80 min minimum period for cataclysmic variables, indicating that the properties of the population of these objects discovered by the SDSS are substantially different to those of the cataclysmic variables found by other means. Additional photometry of SDSS J023322.61+005059.5 reveals a periodicity of approximately 60 min which we interpret as the spin period of the white dwarf, suggesting that this system is an intermediate polar with a low accretion rate. SDSS J103533.02+055158.3 has a period right at the observed minimum value, a spectrum dominated by the cool white dwarf primary star and exhibits deep eclipses, so is an excellent candidate for an accurate determination of the parameters of the system. The spectroscopic orbit of SDSS J121607.03+052013.9 has a velocity amplitude of only 13.8 +/- 1.6 km/s, implying that this system has an extreme mass ratio. From several physical constraints we find that this object must contain either a high-mass white dwarf or a brown-dwarf-mass secondary component or both., Comment: 15 pages, 13 figures, accepted for publication by MNRAS. 12. Dwarf novae in the Hamburg Quasar Survey: Rarer than expected

Abstract: We report the discovery of five new dwarf novae from the Hamburg Quasar Survey (HQS), and discuss the properties of the sample of dwarf novae in the HQS. The orbital periods of the new dwarf novae are ~105.1 min or ~109.9 min, 114.3+-2.7 min, 92.66+-0.17 min, 272.317+-0.001 min, 258.02+-0.56 min for HS0417+7445, HS1016+3412, HS1340+1524, HS1857+7127, and HS2214+2845, respectively. HS1857+7127 is found to be partially eclipsing. In HS2214+2845 the secondary star of spectral type M3+-1 is clearly detected, and we estimate the distance to the system to be d=390+-40 pc. We recorded one superoutburst of the SU UMa system HS0417+7445. HS1016+3412 and HS1340+1524 have rare outbursts, and their subtype is yet undetermined. HS1857+7127 frequently varies in brightness and may be a Z Cam-type dwarf nova. HS2214+2845 is a U Gem-type dwarf nova with a most likely cycle length of 71 d. To date, 14 new dwarf novae have been identified in the HQS. The ratio of short-period (<3 h) to long-period (>3 h) systems of this sample is 1.3, much smaller compared to the ratio of 2.7 found for all known dwarf novae. The HQS dwarf novae display typically infrequent or low-amplitude outburst activity, underlining the strength of spectroscopic selection in identifying new CVs independently of their variability. The spectroscopic properties of short-period CVs in the HQS suggest that most of them are still evolving towards the minimum period. Their total number agrees with the predictions of population models within an order of magnitude. However, the bulk of all CVs is predicted to have evolved past the minimum period, and those systems remain unidentified. Those post-bounce systems may have markedly weaker Hbeta emission lines compared to the average known short-period CVs, and probably undergo no or extremely rare outbursts., Comment: accepted for publication in A&A, 17 pages, 18 figures, low-quality figures to comply with astro-ph size limit

Abstract: We report on the properties of 71 known cataclysmic variables (CVs) in photometric Halpha emission line surveys. Our study is motivated by the fact that the Isaac Newton Telescope (INT) Photometric Halpha Survey of the northern galactic plane (IPHAS) will soon provide r', i' and narrow-band Halpha measurements down to r' \simeq 20 for all northern objects between -5 degrees < b < +5 degrees. IPHAS thus provides a unique resource, both for studying the emission line properties of known CVs and for constructing a new CV sample selected solely on the basis of Halpha excess. Our goal here is to carry out the first task and prepare the way for the second. In order to achieve this, we analyze data on 19 CVs already contained in the IPHAS data base and supplement this with identical observations of 52 CVs outside the galactic plane. Our key results are as follows: (i) the recovery rate of known CVs as Halpha emitters in a survey like IPHAS is \simeq 70 per cent; (ii) of the \simeq 30 per cent of CVs which were not recovered \simeq 75 per cent were clearly detected but did not exhibit a significant Halpha excess at the time of our observations; (iii) the recovery rate depends only weakly on CV type; (iv) the recovery rate depends only weakly on orbital period; (v) short-period dwarf novae tend to have the strongest Halpha lines. 14. The 2005 outburst of the halo black hole X-ray transient XTE J1118+480

Abstract: We present optical and infrared monitoring of the 2005 outburst of the halo black hole X-ray transient XTE J1118+480. We measured a total outburst amplitude of ~5.7+-0.1 mag in the R band and ~5 mag in the infrared J, H and K_s bands. The hardness ratio HR2 (5-12 keV/3-5 keV) from the RXTE/ASM data is 1.53+-0.02 at the peak of the outburst indicating a hard spectrum. Both the shape of the light curve and the ratio L_X (1-10 keV)/L_opt resemble the mini-outbursts observed in GRO J0422+32 and XTE J1859+226. During early decline, we find a 0.02-mag amplitude variation consistent with a superhump modulation, like the one observed during the 2000 outburst. Similarly, XTE J1118+480 displayed a double-humped ellipsoidal modulation distorted by a superhump wave when settled into a near-quiescence level, suggesting that the disk expanded to the 3:1 resonance radius after outburst where it remained until early quiescence. The system reached quiescence at R=19.02+-0.03 about three months after the onset of the outburst. The optical rise preceded the X-ray rise by at most 4 days. The spectral energy distributions (SEDs) at the different epochs during outburst are all quasi-power laws with F_nu proportional to nu^alpha increasing toward the blue. At the peak of the outburst we derived alpha=0.49+-0.04 for the optical data alone and alpha=0.1+-0.1 when fitting solely the infrared. This difference between the optical and the infrared SEDs suggests that the infrared is dominated by a different component (a jet?) whereas the optical is presumably showing the disk evolution., Comment: Accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal

Abstract: We present time-resolved spectroscopy and photometry of the cataclysmic variable (CV) SDSSJ133941.11+484727.5 (SDSS1339) which has been discovered in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 4. The orbital period determined from radial velocity studies is 82.524(24)min, close to the observed period minimum. The optical spectrum of SDSS1339 is dominated to 90% by emission from the white dwarf. The spectrum can be successfully reproduced by a three-component model (white dwarf, disc, secondary) with Twd=12500K for a fixed log g=8.0, d=170pc, and a spectral type of the secondary later than M8. The mass transfer rate corresponding to the optical luminosity of the accretion disc is very low,~1.7x10^-13Msun/yr. Optical photometry reveals a coherent variability at 641s with an amplitude of 0.025mag, which we interpret as non-radial pulsations of the white dwarf. In addition, a long-period photometric variation with a period of either 320min or 344min and an amplitude of 0.025mag is detected, which bears no apparent relation with the orbital period of the system. Abstract: We present time-resolved optical spectroscopy and photometry of four relatively bright (V~14.0-15.5) long-period cataclysmic variables (CVs) discovered in the Hamburg Quasar Survey: HS0139+0559, HS0229+8016, HS0506+7725 and HS0642+5049. Their respective orbital periods, 243.69+-0.49min, 232.550+-0.049min, 212.7+-0.2min and 225.90+-0.23min are determined from radial velocity and photometric variability studies. HS0506+7725 is characterised by strong Balmer and He emission lines, short-period (~10-20min) flickering and weak X-ray emission in the ROSAT All Sky Survey. The detection of a deep low state (~18.5) identifies HS0506+7725 as a member of the VY Scl stars. HS0139+0559, HS0229+8016 and HS0642+5049 display thick-disc like spectra and no or only weak flickering activity. HS0139+0559 and HS0229+8016 exhibit clean quasi-sinusoidal radial velocity varations of their emission lines but no or very little orbital photometric variability. In contrast, we detect no radial velocity variation in HS0642+5049 but a noticeable orbital brightness variation. We identify all three systems either as UX UMa-type novalike variables or as Z Cam-type dwarf novae. Our identification of these four new systems underlines that the currently known sample of CVs is rather incomplete even for bright objects. 17. HS 0943+1404, a true intermediate polar

Abstract: We have identified a new intermediate polar, HS 0943+1404, as part of our ongoing search for cataclysmic variables in the Hamburg Quasar Survey. The orbital and white dwarf spin periods determined from time-resolved photometry and spectroscopy are Porb ~= 250 min and Pspin = 69.171 +- 0.001 min, respectively. The combination of a large ratio Pspin/Porb ~= 0.3 and a long orbital period is very unusual compared to the other known intermediate polars. The magnetic moment of the white dwarf is estimated to be mu1 ~ 10^{34} G cm^3, which is in the typical range of polars. Our extensive photometry shows that HS 0943+1404 enters into deep (~ 3 mag) low states, which are also a characteristic feature of polars. We therefore suggest that the system is a true ``intermediate'' polar that will eventually synchronise, that is, a transitional object between intermediate polars and polars. 18. Cataclysmic variables from a ROSAT/2MASS selection I: Four new intermediate polars

Abstract: We report the first results from a new search for cataclysmic variables (CVs) using a combined X-ray (ROSAT) / infrared (2MASS) target selection that discriminates against background AGN. Identification spectra were obtained at the Isaac Newton Telescope for a total of 174 targets, leading to the discovery of 12 new CVs. Initially devised to find short-period low-mass-transfer CVs, this selection scheme has been very successful in identifying new intermediate polars. Photometric and spectroscopic follow-up observations identify four of the new CVs as intermediate polars: 1RXSJ063631.9+353537 (Porb~201min, Pspin=1008.3408s or 930.5829), 1RXSJ070407.9+262501 (Porb~250min, Pspin=480.708s), 1RXSJ173021.5-055933 (Porb=925.27min, Pspin=128.0s), and 1RXSJ180340.0+401214 (Porb=160.21min, Pspin=1520.51s). RXJ1730, also a moderately bright hard X-ray source in the INTEGRAL/IBIS Galactic plane survey, resembles the enigmatic AE Aqr. 19. Time-resolved photometry of the nova remnants DM Gem, CP Lac, GI Mon, V400 Per, CT Ser and XX Tau

Abstract: We present the first results of a photometric survey of poorly studied nova remnants in the Northern Hemisphere. The main results are as follows: DM Gem shows a modulation at 0.123 d (probably linked to the orbit) and rapid variations at ~22 min. A moderate resolution spectrum taken at the time of the photometric observations shows intense HeII 4686 and Bowen emission, characteristic of an intermediate polar or a SW Sex star. Variability at 0.127 d and intense flickering (or quasi-periodic oscillations) are the main features of the light curve of CP Lac. A 0.1-mag dip lasting for ~45 min is observed in GI Mon, which could be an eclipse. A clear modulation (probably related to the orbital motion) either at 0.179 d or 0.152 d is observed in the B-band light curve of V400 Per. The results for CT Ser point to an orbital period close to 0.16 d. Intense flickering is also characteristic of this old nova. Finally, XX Tau shows a possible periodic signal near 0.14 d and displays fast variability at ~24 min. Its brightness seems to be modulated at ~5 d. 20. Detection of the white dwarf and the secondary star in the new SU UMa dwarf nova HS 2219+1824

Abstract: We report the discovery of a new, non-eclipsing SU UMa-type dwarf nova, HS 2219+1824. Photometry obtained in quiescence (V ~ 17.5) reveals a double-humped light curve from which we derive an orbital period of ~ 86.2 min. Additional photometry obtained during a superoutburst reaching V ~ 12.0 clearly shows superhumps with a period of ~ 89.05 min. The optical spectrum contains double-peaked Balmer and HeI emission lines from the accretion disc as well as broad absorption troughs of Hbeta, Hgamma, and Hdelta from the white dwarf primary star. Modelling of the optical spectrum implies a white dwarf temperature of 13000 K <~ Twd <~ 17000 K, a distance of 180 pc <~ d <~ 230 pc, and suggests that the spectral type of the donor star is later than M5. Phase-resolved spectroscopy obtained during quiescence reveals a narrow Halpha emission line component which has a radial velocity amplitude and phase consistent with an origin on the secondary star, possibly on the irradiated hemisphere facing the white dwarf. We show that the system is a new eclipsing member of the SW Sex class of CVs with an orbital period of 3.21 hours. We derive an orbital inclination of ~85 +- 4 degrees from the average eclipse profile, making HS 0728+6738 the highest inclination SW Sex star known. The optical and far-ultraviolet emission lines are not or only weakly occulted during the eclipse, indicating the presence of line-emission sites either far outside the Roche lobe of the primary or, more likely, above the orbital plane of the binary. 23. DW Cancri: a magnetic VY Scl star with an orbital period of 86 minutes

Abstract: We present the first time-resolved spectroscopic study of the cataclysmic variable DW Cancri. We have determined an orbital period of 86.10 +- 0.05 min, which places the system very close to the observed minimum period of hydrogen-rich cataclysmic variables. This invalidates previous speculations of DW Cnc being either a permanent superhumper below the period minimum or a nova-like variable with an orbital period longer than 3 hours showing quasi-periodic oscillations. The Balmer and HeI lines have double-peaked profiles and exhibit an intense S-wave component moving with the orbital period. Remarkably, the Balmer and HeI radial velocity curves are modulated at two periods: 86.10 +- 0.05 min (orbital) and 38.58 +- 0.02 min. The same short period is found in the equivalent width variations of the single-peaked HeII 4686 line. We also present time-resolved photometry of the system which shows a highly-coherent variation at 38.51 min, consistent with the short spectroscopic period. The large number of similarities with the short-period intermediate polar V1025 Cen lead us to suggest that DW Cnc is another intermediate polar below the period gap, and we tentatively identify the photometric and spectroscopic 38-min signals with the white dwarf spin period. Abstract: We report the identification of the cataclysmic variable 1RXSJ062518.2+733433 as an intermediate polar. The orbital period of the system is determined to be 283.0+-2 min from the radial velocity variation of Halpha, measured in an extensive set of time-resolved spectroscopy. Differential optical photometry obtained over a base line of three weeks reveals the presence of coherent variability with a period of 19.788+-0.002 min, which we suggest to be the white dwarf spin period. The power spectrum of our photometry also contains a strong signal near the spectroscopically determined orbital period. The emission lines in 1RXSJ062518.2+733433 display a complex multicomponent structure. In the trailed spectrogram of HeI 6678 we detect a narrow component with a radial velocity semi-amplitude of ~140kms, consistent with a possible origin on the irradiated face of the secondary. 25. Discovery of variable circular polarization from the remnant of Nova Chamaeleontis 1953 (RR Cha)

Abstract: We report on the discovery of variable circular polarization from the remnant of Nova Chamaeleontis 1953 (RR Cha). The circular polarization appears to be modulated on the primary's spin period and harmonics of the positive superhump period, with an amplitude peak-to-peak of almost ~10 per cent with both negative and positive polarization. A recent study by Woudt & Warner of RR Cha shows it to have both positive and negative superhumps, indicating the presence of a precessing/tilted accretion disc. In addition, they also find a stable period at 1950 s, characteristic of an Intermediate Polar. RR Cha also shows deep eclipses with variable depth. We propose a possible explanation for the origin of the polarized emission. We assume that it is of cyclotron origin. The variations of the circular polarization with the proposed spin period are caused by the rotation of the compact object. The long period variability arise as a result of a precessing/tilted accretion disc, periodically obscuring either of two accretion regions on the surface of the white dwarf. We also point out several similarities of RR Cha with the SW Sex stars. The lack of a time resolved spectroscopic study prevents to make any conclusion regarding its possible SW Sex nature. Hence, such spectroscopic study is encouraged. Abstract: We present optical photometry and spectroscopy of the X-ray transient XTE J1859+226, obtained during outburst and its subsequent decay to quiescence. Both the X-ray and optical properties are very similar to those of well-studied black hole soft X-ray transients. We have detected 3 minioutbursts, when XTE J1859+226 was approaching quiescence, as has been previously detected in the Soft X-Ray Transients GRO J0422+32 and GRS 1009-45. By 24 Aug 2000 the system had reached quiescence with R=22.48+/-0.07. The estimated distance to the source is ~11 kpc. Photometry taken during quiescence shows a sinusoidal modulation with a peak to peak amplitude of about 0.4 mag. A period analysis suggests that periods from 0.28 to 0.47 days are equally possible at the 68% confidence level. The amplitude of the quiescent light curve and the relatively low ratio of X-ray to optical flux, indicates that the binary inclination should be high. Abstract: We present the results of our monitoring of the halo black-hole soft X-ray transient (SXT) XTE J1118+480 during its decline to quiescence. The system has decayed 0.5 mags from December 2000 to its present near quiescent level at R=18.65 (June 2001). The ellipsoidal lightcurve is distorted by an additional modulation that we interpret as a superhump of P_sh=0.17049(1) d i.e. 0.3% longer than the orbital period. This implies a disc precession period P_prec= 52 d. After correcting the average phase-folded light curve for veiling, the amplitude difference between the minima suggests that the binary inclination angle lies in the range i=71-82 deg. However, we urge caution in the interpretation of these values because of residual systematic contamination of the ellipsoidal lightcurve by the complex form of the superhump modulation. The orbital--mean H-alpha profiles exhibit clear velocity variations with ~500 km/s amplitude. 29. V348 Puppis: a new SW Sex star in the period gap

Abstract: We present time-resolved optical spectroscopy and photometry of the nova-like cataclysmic variable V348 Puppis. The system displays the same spectroscopic behaviour as SW Sex stars, so we classify V348 Pup as a new member of the class. V348 Pup is the second SW Sex system (the first is V795 Herculis) which lies in the period gap. The spectra exhibit enhanced HeII 4686 emission, reminiscent of magnetic cataclysmic variables. The study of this emission line gives a primary velocity semi-amplitude of K1 ~= 100 km/s. We have also derived the system parameters, obtaining: M1 ~= 0.65 Msun, M2 ~= 0.20 Msun (q ~= 0.31), i ~= 80 deg and K2 ~= 323 km/s. The spectroscopic behaviour of V348 Pup is very similar to that of V795 Her, with the exception that V348 Pup shows deep eclipses. We have computed the ``0.5-absorption'' spectrum of both systems, obtaining spectra which resemble the absorption spectrum of a B0 V star. We propose that absorption in SW Sex systems can be produced by a vertically extended atmosphere which forms where the gas stream re-impacts the system, either at the accretion disc or at the white dwarf's magnetosphere (assuming a magnetic scenario)., Comment: 6 pages, 10 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

Abstract: We present the results of a photometric CCD monitoring of the gravitational lens system UM 673, that took place from 1995 to 2000. In total, the doubly-imaged quasar was observed in the R-band during 29 photometric nights, using optical telescopes with dimensions in the range 0.6 m to 1.3 m. We detected a significant variability in the total light of the UM 673 system, that is, in the light of the two QSO images plus the lensing galaxy. With respect to the magnitude of the gravitational lens system at its discovery, in 1986, UM 673 was 0.3 magnitude brighter. Furthermore, our December 1996 measurements show that between November 1995 and October 1997 the system became even brighter, reaching a magnitude difference of 0.5 magnitude with respect to its discovery value. 31. Evidence of magnetic accretion in an SW Sex star: discovery of variable circular polarization in LS Pegasi

Abstract: We report on the discovery of variable circular polarization in the SW Sex star LS Pegasi. The observed modulation has an amplitude of ~0.3 % and a period of 29.6 minutes, which we assume as the spin period of the magnetic white dwarf. We also detected periodic flaring in the blue wing of Hbeta, with a period of 33.5 minutes. The difference between both frequencies is just the orbital frequency, so we relate the 33.5-min modulation to the beat between the orbital and spin period. We propose a new accretion scenario in SW Sex stars, based on the shock of the disk-overflown gas stream against the white dwarf's magnetosphere, which extends to the corotation radius. From this geometry, we estimate a magnetic field strength of B(1) ~ 5-15 MG. Our results indicate that magnetic accretion plays an important role in SW Sex stars and we suggest that these systems are probably Intermediate Polars with the highest mass accretion rates., Comment: Accepted by ApJ Letters. 32. Long-term photometry of WX Arietis: evidence for eclipses and dips

Abstract: We present R-band photometry of the SW Sex-type cataclysmic variable WX Arietis made in October 1995 and August 1998-February 1999. Contrary to previous results, we find that WX Ari is an eclipsing system with an orbital inclination of ~72 deg. The R-band light curves display highly variable, shallow eclipses ~0.15-mag deep and ~40 min long. The observed eclipse depth suggests a partial eclipse of the accretion disc. The light curves also show a wide dip in brightness centred at orbital phase ~0.75 and a hump close to the opposite phase at ~0.2. The observed dip may be explained by the probable vertical thickening of the outer rim of the accretion disc downstream from the bright spot. We also demonstrate that the disc brightness in all SW Sex systems is nearly the same. Abstract: The Large Observatory For x-ray Timing (LOFT) is a mission concept which was proposed to ESA as M3 and M4 candidate in the framework of the Cosmic Vision 2015-2025 program. Thanks to the unprecedented combination of effective area and spectral resolution of its main instrument and the uniquely large field of view of its wide field monitor, LOFT will be able to study the behaviour of matter in extreme conditions such as the strong gravitational field in the innermost regions close to black holes and neutron stars and the supra-nuclear densities in the interiors of neutron stars. The science payload is based on a Large Area Detector (LAD, >8m2 effective area, 2-30 keV, 240 eV spectral resolution, 1 degree collimated field of view) and a Wide Field Monitor (WFM, 2-50 keV, 4 steradian field of view, 1 arcmin source location accuracy, 300 eV spectral resolution). The WFM is equipped with an on-board system for bright events (e.g., GRB) localization. The trigger time and position of these events are broadcast to the ground within 30 s from discovery.
