Search

We present analysis and results of a coordinated CCD photometry campaign to observe the 2006 June superoutburst of the cataclysmic variable V1316 Cyg involving 8 longitudinally-distributed observers. The outburst peaked at magnitude 15.03 on June 10, declined at a rate of 0.14 mag/day, lasted 11 days and had an amplitude above quiescence of 2.4 magnitudes. We detected common superhumps for the first time, thereby confirming that V1316 Cyg is a member of the UGSU class of dwarf novae. We observed a transition to late superhumps two-thirds of the way through the outburst with an associated phase shift of 0.50 +/- 0.06 cycles. The mean common superhump period before this transition was 0.07685 +/- 0.00003 d and the mean late superhump period following the transition was 0.07654 +/- 0.00002 d. The common superhump period decreased at a rate dP/dt = -5.1 +/- 1.7 x10^-5 /cycle. At the onset of late superhumps, there was a transient shift in power from the superhump fundamental frequency to its first harmonic and back again. We detected an orbital period of 0.0740 +/- 0.0002 d giving a fractional superhump period excess of 0.038 +/- 0.003 and a mass ratio of 0.167 +/- 0.010. A scalegram analysis of the flickering behaviour of V1316 Cyg found that the alpha and sigma parameters characterising flickering changed significantly during the superoutburst. We report the serendipitous detection of a very bright, very nearby microlensing event. In late October 2006, an otherwise unremarkable A0 star at a distance ~1 kpc (GSC 3656-1328) brightened achromatically by a factor of nearly 40 over the span of several days and then decayed in an apparently symmetrical way. We present a light curve of the event based on optical photometry from the Center for Backyard Astrophysics and the All Sky Automated Survey, as well as near-infrared photometry from the Peters Automated Infrared Imaging Telescope. This light curve is well-fit by a generic microlensing model. We also report optical spectra, and Swift X-ray and UV observations that are consistent with the microlensing interpretation. We discuss and reject alternative explanations for this variability. The lens star is probably a low-mass star or brown dwarf, with a relatively high proper motion of >20 mas/yr, and may be visible using precise optical/infrared imaging taken several years from now. A modest, all-sky survey telescope could detect ~10 such events per year, which would enable searches for very low-mass planetary companions to relatively nearby stars., Comment: 11 pages, 5 figures. We report on successes and failures in searching for positive superhumps in cataclysmic variables, and show the superhumping fraction as a function of orbital period. Basically, all short-period systems do, all long-period systems don't, and a 50% success rate is found at P_orb=3.1+-0.2 hr. We can use this to measure the critical mass ratio for the creation of superhumps. With a mass-radius relation appropriate for cataclysmic variables, and an assumed mean white-dwarf mass of 0.75 M_sol, we find a mass ratio q_crit=0.35+-0.02. We also report superhump studies of several stars of independently known mass ratio: OU Virginis, XZ Eridani, UU Aquarii, and KV UMa (= XTE J1118+480). The latter two are of special interest, because they represent the most extreme mass ratios for which accurate superhump measurements have been made. We use these to improve the epsilon(q) calibration, by which we can infer the elusive q from the easy-to-measure epsilon (the fractional period excess of P_superhump over P_orb). This relation allows mass and radius estimates for the secondary star in any CV showing superhumps. The consequent mass-radius law shows an apparent discontinuity in radius near 0.2 M_sol, as predicted by the disrupted magnetic braking model for the 2.1-2.7 hour period gap. We report a photometric study of the WZ Sagittae-type dwarf nova PQ Andromedae. The light curve shows strong (0.05 mag full amplitude) signals with periods of 1263(1) and 634(1) s, and a likely double-humped signal with P=80.6(2) min. We interpret the first two as nonradial pulsation periods of the underlying white dwarf, and the last as the orbital period of the underlying binary. We estimate a distance of 150(50) pc from proper motions and the two standard candles available: the white dwarf and the dwarf-nova outburst. At this distance, the K magnitude implies that the secondary is probably fainter than any star on the main sequence -- indicating a mass below the Kumar limit at 0.075 M_sol. We report time-series photometry of the quiescent optical counterpart of the EUV transient RE J1255+266. The star appears as a DA white dwarf with bright emission lines and a complex spectrum of periodic signals in its light curve. A signal at 0.0829 d is likely to be the orbital period of the underlying cataclysmic binary (probably a dwarf nova). Characteristic periods of 1344, 1236, and 668 s are seen, and a host of weaker signals. We interpret these noncommensurate signals as (nonradial) pulsation periods of the white dwarf. The donor star is unseen at all wavelengths, and the accretion rate is very low. We estimate a distance of 180+-50 pc, and M_v=14.6+-1.3 for the accretion light. The binary probably represents a very late stage of evolution, with the donor star whittled down to M_2<0.05 M_sol. Such binaries stubbornly resist discovery due to their faintness and reluctance to erupt, but are probably a very common type of cataclysmic variable. If the signal at 0.0829 d is indeed the orbital period, then the binary is an excellent candidate as a "period bouncer". Plausible colleagues in this club include four dwarf novae and the (so far) noneruptive stars GD 552 and 1RXS J105010.3-140431 (hereafter RX 1050). The 1994 EUV eruption implies a soft X-ray/EUV luminosity of 10^(34-35) erg/s, greater than that of any other dwarf nova. We attribute that to a favorable blend of properties: a high-mass white dwarf; a very transparent line of sight (the "Local Chimney"); and a low binary inclination. We report photometry of the helium-rich cataclysmic variable ES Ceti during 2001-2004. The star is roughly stable at V ~ 17.0 and has a light curve dominated by a single period of 620 s, which remains measurably constant over the 3 year baseline. The weight of evidence suggests that this is the true orbital period of the underlying binary, not a "superhump" as initially assumed. We report GALEX ultraviolet magnitudes, which establish a very blue flux distribution (F_nu ~ nu^1.3), and therefore a large bolometric correction. Other evidence (the very strong He II 4686 emission, and a ROSAT detection in soft X-rays) also indicates a strong EUV source, and comparison to helium-atmosphere models suggests a temperature of 130+-10 kK. For a distance of 350 pc, we estimate a luminosity of (0.8-1.7)x10^34 erg/s, yielding a mass accretion rate of (2-4)x10^-9 M_sol/yr onto an assumed 0.7 M_sol white dwarf. This appears to be about as expected for white dwarfs orbiting each other in a 10 minute binary, assuming that mass transfer is powered by gravitational radiation losses. We estimate mean accretion rates for other helium-rich cataclysmic variables, and find that they also follow the expected M-dot ~ P_o^-5 relation. We report photometry and spectroscopy of the novalike variable DW Cancri. The spectra show the usual broad H and He emission lines, with an excitation and continuum slope characteristic of a moderately high accretion rate. A radial-velocity search yields strong detections at two periods, 86.1015(3) min and 38.58377(6) min. We interpret these as respectively the orbital period P_orb of the binary, and the spin period P_spin of a magnetic white dwarf. The light curve also shows the spin period, plus an additional strong signal at 69.9133(10) min, which coincides with the difference frequency 1/P_spin-1/P_orb. These periods are stable over the 1 year baseline of measurement. This triply-periodic structure mimics the behavior of several well-credentialed members of the "DQ Herculis" (intermediate polar) class of cataclysmic variables. DQ Her membership is also suggested by the mysteriously strong sideband signal (at nu_spin-nu_orb), attesting to a strong pulsed flux at X-ray/EUV/UV wavelengths. We report the results of long observing campaigns on two novalike variables: V442 Ophiuchi and RX J1643.7+3402. These stars have high-excitation spectra, complex line profiles signifying mass loss at particular orbital phases, and similar orbital periods (respectively 0.12433 and 0.12056 d). They are well-credentialed members of the SW Sex class of cataclysmic variables. Their light curves are also quite complex. V442 Oph shows periodic signals with periods of 0.12090(8) and 4.37(15) days, and RX J1643.7+3402 shows similar signals at 0.11696(8) d and 4.05(12) d. We interpret these short and long periods respectively as a "negative superhump" and the wobble period of the accretion disk. The superhump could then possibly arise from the heating of the secondary (and structures fixed in the orbital frame) by inner-disk radiation, which reaches the secondary relatively unimpeded since the disk is not coplanar. At higher frequencies, both stars show another type of variability: quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) with a period near 1000 seconds. Underlying these strong signals of low stability may be weak signals of higher stability. Similar QPOs, and negative superhumps, are quite common features in SW Sex stars. Both can in principle be explained by ascribing strong magnetism to the white dwarf member of the binary; and we suggest that SW Sex stars are borderline AM Herculis binaries, usually drowned by a high accretion rate. We present photometry and spectroscopy of HT Camelopardalis, a recently discovered X-ray-bright cataclysmic variable. The spectrum shows bright lines of H, He I, and He II, all moving with a period of 0.059712(1) d, which we interpret as the orbital period. The star's brightness varies with a strict period of 515.0592(2) s, and a mean full amplitude of 0.11 mag. These properties qualify it as a /bona fide/ DQ Herculis star (intermediate polar) -- in which the magnetism of the rapidly rotating white dwarf channels accretion flow to the surface. Normally at V=17.8, the star shows rare and very brief outbursts to V=12-13. We observed one in December 2001, and found that the 515 s pulse amplitude had increased by a factor of ~100 (in flux units). We report photometry of 1RXS J232953.9+062814, a recently discovered dwarf nova with a remarkably short 64.2-minute orbital period. In quiescence, the star's light curve is that of a double sinusoid, arising from the "ellipsoidal" distortion of the Roche-lobe-filling secondary. During superoutburst, common superhumps develop with a period 3-4% longer than P_orb. This indicates a mass ratio M_2/M_1=0.19+-0.02, a surprisingly large value in so compact a binary. This implies that the secondary star has a density 2-3 times higher than that of other short-period dwarf novae, suggesting a secondary enriched by H-burning prior to the common-envelope phase of evolution. We estimate i=50+-5 deg, M_1=0.63 (+0.12, -0.09) M_sol, M_2=0.12 (+0.03, -0.02) M_sol, R_2=0.121 (+0.010, -0.007) R_sol, and a distance to the binary of 180+-40 pc., Comment: PDF, 17 pages, 3 tables, 5 figures; accepted, in press, to appear June 2002, PASP; more info at http://cba.phys.columbia.edu/

We present spectroscopy and time-series photometry of the newly discovered dwarf nova 1RXS J232953.9+062814. Photometry in superoutburst reveals a superhump with a period of 66.06(6) minutes. The low state spectrum shows Balmer and HeI emission on a blue continuum, and in addition shows a rich absorption spectrum of type K4 +- 2. The absorption velocity is modulated sinusoidally at P_orb = 64.176(5) min, with semi-amplitude K = 348(4) km/s. The low-state light curve is double-humped at this period, and phased as expected for ellipsoidal variations. The absorption strength does not vary appreciably around the orbit. The orbital period is shorter than any other cataclysmic variable save for a handful of helium-star systems and V485 Centauri (59 minutes). The secondary is much hotter than main sequence stars of similar mass, but is well-matched by helium-enriched models, indicating that the secondary evolved from a more massive progenitor. We use the hot spot eclipse times of the newly discovered deeply-eclipsing dwarf nova IY UMa to trace out the shape of its disc during the late superhump era. We find an eccentric disc. We show that the brightness of the stream-disc impact region varies as expected with |deltaV|^2, where deltaV is the differential velocity of the stream with respect to the velocity of the disc at the impact point. The eclipsing novalike cataclysmic variable star V348 Pup exhibits a persistent luminosity modulation with a period 6 per cent longer than its 2.44 hour orbital-period (Porb). This has been interpreted as a `positive superhump' resulting from a slowly precessing non-axisymmetric accretion disc gravitationally interacting with the secondary. We find a clear modulation of mid-eclipse times on the superhump period, which agrees well with the predictions of a simple precessing eccentric disc model. Our modelling shows that the disc light centre is on the far side of the disc from the donor star when the superhump reaches maximum light. This phasing suggests a link between superhumps in V348 Pup and late superhumps in SU UMa systems. Modelling of the full lightcurve and maximum entropy eclipse mapping both show that the disc emission is concentrated closer to the white dwarf at superhump maximum than at superhump minimum. This proposal was designed to study pulse and orbital modulations in candidate DQ Herculis stars. Data on 5 stars were obtained. The best results were obtained on YY Draconis, which exhibited a strongly pulsed hard X-ray flux, and even suggested a transition between one-pole and two-pole emission during the course of the observation. This result is being readied for inclusion in a comprehensive study of YY Draconis. A strong pulsation appeared to be present also in H0857-242, but with a period of about 50 minutes, confusion with the first harmonic of the satellite's orbital frequency is possible. So that result is uncertain. A negative result was obtained on 4UO608-49 (V347 Pup), suggesting either that the X-ray identification is incorrect, or that the source is very transient. Finally, data was obtained on V1432 Aql and WZ Sge, respectively the slowest and fastest of these stars. Combined with the Advanced Satellite for Cosmology and Astrophysics (ASCA) data, the high-energy data demonstrates the latter to contain a white dwarf rotating with P = 27.87 s. Optical photometry contemporaneous with the X-ray data was obtained of V1432 Aql, in order to study the variations in the eclipse waveform. As anticipated, the width and centroid of the eclipse appeared to vary with the 50-day "supercycle". A paper reporting this study is now in preparation.

We obtained multiwavelength coverage of the soft X-ray transient GRO J1655-40 during its 1996 outburst, using HST, RXTE, CGRO, and ground-based facilities. This outburst was qualitatively different from other SXT outbursts and from previous outbursts of this source. The onset of hard X-ray activity occurred very slowly, over several months, and was delayed relative to the soft X-ray rise. During this period, the optical fluxes declined steadily. This apparent anticorrelation is not consistent with with the standard disk instability model of SXT outbursts, nor is it expected if the optical output is dominated by reprocessed X-rays, as in persistent low-mass X-ray binaries. .

We carried out an Advanced Satellite for Cosmology and Astrophysics (ASCA) observation of WZ Sagittae, to obtain the first X-ray spec- trum and to search for an X-ray counterpart near the well-known optical signal of 27.87 s. At around the same epoch, we carried out a similar search in ultraviolet radiation with the Faint Object Spectrograph (FOS) aboard the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). These experiments were done to test the hypothesis that the signal arises from rapid white dwarf rotation. The result generally confirmed that hypothesis, because signals were apparently detected at 27.87 s in both UV and hard X-ray light. But the detailed results were somewhat confusing, not exactly as simple as we dreamed in the proposal. The X-ray signal only emerges with fairly subtle methods of data analysis: either a "period-biased" search, or a sorting of X-ray photons into hard/soft - thus the detections are slightly marred by the taint of a posterz'ori reasoning. The UV data suffer a different but also worrisome problem: although 27.87 s is definitely detected, it's weaker than two other signals, at 28.22 and 29.69 s. That's quite surprising - we expected that the UV power spectrum would be simple, on the grounds that the UV flux distribution is nearly a pure white dwarf. Considered in isolation, such behavior from a white dwarf should be considered evidence for the pulsation hypothesis. The X-ray spectrum was interesting, mostly by virtue of what it did not show. It was essentially a pure thermal bremsstrahlung with kT = 5 keV, with only a very weak Fe K complex. This probably signifies origin near the central white dwarf and heating from accretion (propellor heating farther out would give lower densities and more cooling by emission lines). We published a paper reporting most of these details (Patterson et al. (1998), PASP, 110, 403), Much of the world accepts now that WZ Sge contains a rapidly spinning white dwarf - the fastest spin of any accreting white dwarf.

Work on NAG5-3288 ("White Dwarf Pulsars") has been fully integrated with the identically titled project NAG5-4734. The final report below is the same, since the data analysis and interpretative work are integrated, as are the resulting (previous and in-pipeline) publications. The proposal was designed to study pulse and orbital modulations in candidate DQ Herculis stars. Data on 5 stars were obtained. We review the properties of the DQ Herculis stars: cataclysmic variables containing an accreting, magnetic, rapidly rotating white dwarf. These stars are characterized by strong X-ray emission, high-excitation spectra, and very stable optical and X-ray pulsations in their light curves. There is considerable resemblance to their more famous cousins, the AM Herculis stars, but the latter class is additionally characterized by spin-orbit synchronism and the presence of strong circular polarization. We list eighteen stars passing muster as certain or very likely DQ Her stars. The rotational periods range from 33 s to 2.0 hr. Additional periods can result when the rotating searchlight illuminates other structures in the binary. A single hypothesis explains most of the observed properties: magnetically channeled accretion within a truncated disk. Some accretion flow still seems to proceed directly to the magnetosphere, however. The white dwarfs' magnetic moments are in the range 10(sup 32) - 10(sup 34) G cc, slightly weaker than in AM Her stars but with some probable overlap. The more important reason why DQ Hers have broken synchronism is probably their greater accretion rate and orbital separation. The observed L(sub x)/L(sub V) values are surprisingly low for a radially accreting white dwarf, suggesting that most of the accretion energy is not radiated in a strong shock above the magnetic pole. The fluxes can be more satisfactorily explained if most of the radial infall energy manages to bypass the shock and deposit itse lf directly in the white dwarf photosphere, where it should emerge as extreme ultraviolet (EUV) radiation. This also provides an adequate source of ionizing photons to power the high-excitation optical and UV emission lines. This is probably the DQ Her analog to the famous 'soft X-ray excess' in AM Her stars. However, unlike the AM Her case, this radiation has not been directly observed, so the analogy must not (yet) be embraced too firmly. There is some conventional wisdom today which segregates the short-period from the long-period DQ Her stars. But the observational grounds for this distinction are slim, except in one respect: X-ray emission from short-period systems appears to be weaker and softer. This must be due to the shallower depth of the potential well, and/or the greater difficulty the fast rotators have in enforcing radial accretion flow.

We have acquired light curves at a wavelength of 6 cm of the eclipsing binary V471 Tauri around the orbit, in order to determine the geometrical location of the radio emission in the binary. Each light curve shows a broad minimum near the time of optical eclipse, suggesting that the radio luminosity originates between the two stars. Other observations at X-ray, UV, and visual wavelengths are also supportive of the idea of a gas cloud more or less permanently located between the stars. This could be explained if the radio emission arises from the interaction of the magnetic fields of the secondary and the white dwarf near the line of centers.

Photometry of the X-ray-selected cataclysmic variable TW Pictoris (=H 0534-581) reveals a periodic signal at P = 6.1 hr, which is approximately the orbital period of the binary. In addition, a highly probable signal is found at P = 119.76 +/- 0.09 min. Coupled with the high excitation, the high L(x)/L(opt) ratio, and the probable detection of a similar spectroscopic period, this makes it likely that the star belongs to the 'DQ Herculis' class of cataclysmic variable in which the stable short period is the spin period of an accreting magnetic white dwarf. Theory suggests that TW Pic is a particularly attractive candidate for showing circular polarization at visual or near-infrared wavelengths.

The results are reported of an extensive 1991 campaign to determine an accurate value of the period of the old nova V603 Aquilae, free from aliasing, in at least one season. Phase drift of +/- 0.3 cycles around the mean period is present on a time scale of about six months. The period is shown to be unstable. There is an interesting resemblance of the 0.146 day photometric signal to the 'superhumps' of dwarf novae. However, the light variations are irregular and not similar to those of dwarf novae. The relationship between observed orbital and superhump period is studied, and it is predicted that V603 Aql is the first of many noneruptive cataclysmic variables which will be recognized as showing superhumps.

Results of a 10-yr photometric program on BG Canis Minoris, a novalike variable distinguished by the presence of a strictly coherent 913-s wave in its light curve, are presented. Long-term ephemerides for the orbital clock, which manifests itself through a 3.2-h light modulation, and the 913-s clock, are presented. The light curve exhibits a persistent 0.3 mag modulation at a period consistent with the 3.2-h spectroscopic period. Well-distributed timings of the orbital minima prove that the period is 0.1347486 day. It is inferred from the shape of the waveform and from the existence of X-ray dips with a sharp energy dependence that the modulation is caused by absorption. Power spectra of the nightly light curves show variable secondary features, in addition to the regular 913-s pulse. The 913-s period, presumably the first harmonic of the true white-dwarf spin period, is decreasing by 0.0022 s/yr.

We report the identification of the infrared counterpart of the pulsating X-ray source HO253 + 193. It is a highly reddened star varying in K light with a period near 3 hr, but an apparent even-odd effect in the light curve implies that the true period is 6.06 hr. Together with the recent report of X-ray eclipses at the latter period, this establishes the close binary nature of the source. Infrared minimum occurs at X-ray minimum, certifying that the infrared variability arises from the tidal distortion of the lobe-filling secondary. The absence of a point source at radio wavelengths, plus the distance derived from the infrared data, suggests that the binary system is accidentally located behind the dense core of the molecular cloud Lynds 1457. The eclipses and pulsations in the X-ray light curve, coupled with the hard X-ray spectrum and low luminosity, demonstrate that HO253 + 193 contains an accreting magnetic white dwarf, and hence belongs to the 'DQ Herculis' class of cataclysmic variables.

The discovery of a stable short-period oscillation in the UV light curve of the old nova GK Persei during 1989-91 is reported. The period is consistent with the 351.34-second pulse period seen in hard X-rays, due to the rotation of the white dwarf. In blue light, a quasi-periodic signal appears in the low-frequency wings of the coherent signal. There is evidence for long-term spin-up of the white dwarf; the most probable mean rate is 0.0008 sec/yr.

Results are reported from a search for periodicities in the X-ray emission from cataclysmic variables observed with the Einstein Observatory's IPC at 0.16-3.5 keV and 0.01-2.5 Hz. Power spectra are shown for 51 observations of 31 systems, and upper limits are derived to the pulse fractions of signals that are not detected. The majority of systems show no coherent periodicities in their X-ray emission, which is consistent with a model in which the X-rays are produced in a disk/white-dwarf boundary layer.

X ray spectral parameters of cataclysmic variables observed with the 'Einstein' imaging proportional counter were determined by fitting an optically thin, thermal bremsstrahlung spectrum to the raw data. Most of the sources show temperatures of order a few keV, while a few sources exhibit harder spectra with temperatures in excess of 10 keV. Estimated 0.1 to 3.5 keV luminosities are generally in the range from 10(exp 30) to 10(exp 32) erg/sec. The results are consistent with the x rays originating in a disk/white dwarf boundary layer of non-magnetic systems, or in a hot, post-shock region in the accretion column of DQ Her stars, with a negligible contribution from the corona of the companion. In a few objects column densities were found that are unusually high for interstellar material. It was suggested that the absorption occurs in the system itself.
