We apply detailed observations of the Color-Magnitude Relation (CMR) with the ACS/HST to study galaxy evolution in eight clusters at z~1. The early-type red sequence is well defined and elliptical and lenticular galaxies lie on similar CMRs. We analyze CMR parameters as a function of redshift, galaxy properties and cluster mass. For bright galaxies (M_B < -21mag), the CMR scatter of the elliptical population in cluster cores is smaller than that of the S0 population, although the two become similar at faint magnitudes. While the bright S0 population consistently shows larger scatter than the ellipticals, the scatter of the latter increases in the peripheral cluster regions. If we interpret these results as due to age differences, bright elliptical galaxies in cluster cores are on average older than S0 galaxies and peripheral elliptical galaxies (by about 0.5Gyr). CMR zero point, slope, and scatter in the (U-B)_z=0 rest-frame show no significant evolution out to redshift z~1.3 nor significant dependence on cluster mass. Two of our clusters display CMR zero points that are redder (by ~2sigma) than the average (U-B)_z=0 of our sample. We also analyze the fraction of morphological early-type and late-type galaxies on the red sequence. We find that, while in the majority of the clusters most (80% to 90%) of the CMR population is composed of early-type galaxies, in the highest redshift, low mass cluster of our sample, the CMR late-type/early-type fractions are similar (~50%), with most of the late-type population composed of galaxies classified as S0/a. Using a magnitude-limited, spectroscopic survey of the X-ray luminous galaxy cluster MS1054-03, we isolate 153 cluster galaxies and measure MS1054's redshift and velocity dispersion to be z=0.8307 and sigma_z=1156 km/s. The absorption-line, post-starburst (``E+A''), and emission-line galaxies respectively make up 63%, 15%, and 23% of the cluster population. With photometry from HST/ACS, we find that the absorption-line members define an exceptionally tight red sequence over a span of ~3.5 magnitudes in i775: their intrinsic scatter in (V-i) color is only 0.048, corresponding to a (U-B)_z scatter of 0.041. Their color scatter is comparable to that of the ellipticals (sigma_Vi=0.055), but measurably smaller than that of the combined E+S0 sample (sigma_Vi=0.072). The color scatter of MS1054's absorption-line population is approximately twice that of the ellipticals in Coma; this difference is consistent with passive evolution where most of the absorption-line members (>75%) formed by z~2, and all of them by z~1.2. For red members, we find a trend (>95% confidence) of weakening Hdelta absorption with redder colors that we conclude is due to age: in MS1054, the color scatter on the red sequence is driven by differences in mean stellar age of up to ~1.5 Gyr. We also generate composite spectra and estimate that the average S0 in MS1054 is ~0.5-1 Gyr younger than the average elliptical; this difference in mean stellar age is mainly due to a number of S0s that are blue (18%) and/or are post-starburst systems (21%)., Comment: Accepted by ApJ

Black hole masses predicted from the Mbh-sigma relationship conflict with those predicted from the Mbh-L relationship for the most luminous galaxies, such as brightest cluster galaxies (BCGs). This is because stellar velocity dispersion, sigma, increases only weakly with L for BCGs and other giant ellipticals. The Mbh-L relationship predicts that the most luminous BCGs may have Mbh approaching 10^{10}M_sol, while the M-sigma relationship always predicts Mbh<3X10^9M_sol. We argue that the Mbh-L relationship is a plausible or even preferred description for BCGs and other galaxies of similar luminosity. If cores in central stellar density are formed by binary BHs, then the inner-core cusp radius, r_gamma, may be an independent witness of Mbh. Using structural parameters derived from a large sample of early-type galaxies observed by HST, we argue that L is superior to sigma as an indicator of r_gamma in luminous galaxies. The observed r_gamma-Mbh relationship for 11 core galaxies with measured Mbh appears to be consistent with the Mbh-L relationship for BCGs. BCGs have large cores appropriate for their large luminosities that may be difficult to generate with the modest BH masses inferred from the Mbh-sigma relationship. Mbh~L may be expected to hold for BCGs, if they were formed in dissipationless mergers, which should preserve ratio of BH to stellar mass. This picture appears to be consistent with the slow increase in sigma with L and the more rapid increase in effective radii with L seen in BCGs. If BCGs have large BHs commensurate with their luminosities, then the local BH mass function for Mbh>3X10^9M_sol may be nearly an order of magnitude richer than that inferred from the Mbh-sigma relationship. Color-magnitude relations have been derived in the clusters RX J0849+4452 and RX J0848+4453 at z~1.26. The color-magnitude relation was determined from Advanced Camera for Surveys imaging in the WFC F775W (i_775) and F850LP (z_850) filters combined with ground-based spectroscopy. Early-type cluster candidates have been identified according to the Postman et al. morphological classification. In both clusters the bright red early-type population defines a tight color-magnitude relation very similar in color, although the two clusters present different X-ray luminosities and shapes, with RX J0849+4452 being three times more X-ray luminous and more compact, and having a temperature two times higher. The elliptical galaxy color-magnitude relations (CMR) in RX J0849+4452 and RX J0848+4453 show an intrinsic (i_775-z_850) color scatter of 0.026 +/- 0.012 mag and 0.024 +/- 0.015 mag, respectively, within 2 arcminutes (~1Mpc at z=1.26) from the cluster X-ray emission centers. Simple modeling of the scatters using stellar population models from Bruzual and Charlot, gives a mean luminosity-weighted age t > 2.5 Gyr (z_f > 2.75). S0 galaxies follow the elliptical CMR; they show larger scatters about the CMR. The intrinsic scatter decreases and the CMR slopes are steeper at smaller radii, within both clusters. We conclude that old stellar populations in cluster elliptical galaxies are already in place at z=1.26, both in the more evolved cluster RX J0849+4452, and in its less evolved companion RX J0848+4453. Even at a lookback time of 9 Gyr, in the early merging and buildup of massive clusters, the bulk of the stellar content of the bright elliptical galaxy population was in place - apparently formed some 2.5~Gyr earlier at z~3, Comment: 22 pages, 8 figures; ApJ, in press

We present the "C4 Cluster Catalog", a new sample of 748 clusters of galaxies identified in the spectroscopic sample of the Second Data Release (DR2) of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). The C4 cluster--finding algorithm identifies clusters as overdensities in a seven-dimensional position and color space, thus minimizing projection effects which plagued previous optical clusters selection. The present C4 catalog covers ~2600 square degrees of sky with groups containing 10 members to massive clusters having over 200 cluster members with redshifts. We provide cluster properties like sky location, mean redshift, galaxy membership, summed r--band optical luminosity (L_r), velocity dispersion, and measures of substructure. We use new mock galaxy catalogs to investigate the sensitivity to the various algorithm parameters, as well as to quantify purity and completeness. These mock catalogs indicate that the C4 catalog is ~90% complete and 95% pure above M_200 = 1x10^14 solar masses and within 0.03 <=z <= 0.12. The C4 algorithm finds 98% of X-ray identified clusters and 90% of Abell clusters within 0.03 <= z <= 0.12. We show that the L_r of a cluster is a more robust estimator of the halo mass (M_200) than the line-of-sight velocity dispersion or the richness of the cluster. L_r. We present new measurements of the galaxy luminosity function (LF) and its dependence on local galaxy density, color, morphology, and clustocentric radius for the massive z=0.83 cluster MS1054-0321. Our analyses are based on imaging performed with the ACS onboard the HST in the F606W, F775W and F850LP passbands and extensive spectroscopic data obtained with the Keck LRIS. Our main results are based on a spectroscopically selected sample of 143 cluster members with morphological classifications derived from the ACS observations. Our three primary findings are (1) the faint-end slope of the LF is steepest in the bluest filter, (2) the LF in the inner part of the cluster (or highest density regions) has a flatter faint-end slope, and (3) the fraction of early-type galaxies is higher at the bright end of the LF, and gradually decreases toward fainter magnitudes. These characteristics are consistent with those in local galaxy clusters, indicating that, at least in massive clusters, the common characteristics of cluster LFs are established at z=0.83. We also find a 2sigma deficit of intrinsically faint, red galaxies (i-z>0.5, Mi>-19) in this cluster. This trend may suggest that faint, red galaxies (which are common in z<0.1 rich clusters) have not yet been created in this cluster at z=0.83. The giant-to-dwarf ratio in MS1054-0321 starts to increase inwards of the virial radius or when Sigma>30 Mpc^-2, coinciding with the environment where the galaxy star formation rate and the morphology-density relation start to appear. We present the first detailed X-ray observations of optically-selected clusters at high redshift. Two clusters, Cl 1324+3011 at z = 0.76 and Cl 1604+4304 at z = 0.90, were observed with XMM-Newton. The optical center of each cluster is coincident with an extended X-ray source whose emission is detected out to a radius of 0.5 Mpc. The emission from each cluster appears reasonably circular, with some indication of asymmetries and more complex morphologies. Similarly to other optically-selected clusters at redshifts of z > 0.4, both clusters are modest X-ray emitters with bolometric luminosities of only Lx = 1.4 - 2.0 x 10^(44) erg/s. We measure gas temperatures of T = 2.88 (+0.71/-0.49) keV for Cl 1324+3011 and 2.51 (+1.05/-0.69) keV for Cl 1604+4304. The X-ray properties of both clusters are consistent with the high-redshift Lx-T relation measured from X-ray-selected samples at z > 0.5. However, based on the local relations, their X-ray luminosities and temperatures are low for their measured velocity dispersions (sigma). The clusters are cooler by a factor of 2 - 9 compared to the local sigma-T relation. We present a catalog of 799 clusters of galaxies in the redshift range z_est = 0.05 - 0.3 selected from ~400 deg^2 of early SDSS commissioning data along the celestial equator. The catalog is based on merging two independent selection methods -- a color-magnitude red-sequence maxBCG technique (B), and a Hybrid Matched-Filter method (H). The BH catalog includes clusters with richness \Lambda >= 40 (Matched-Filter) and N_gal >= 13 (maxBCG), corresponding to typical velocity dispersion of \sigma_v >~ 400 km s^{-1} and mass (within 0.6 h^{-1) Mpc radius) >~ 5*10^{13} h^{-1} M_sun. This threshold is below Abell richness class 0 clusters. The average space density of these clusters is 2*10^{-5} h^3 Mpc^{-3}. All NORAS X-ray clusters and 53 of the 58 Abell clusters in the survey region are detected in the catalog; the 5 additional Abell clusters are detected below the BH catalog cuts. The cluster richness function is determined and found to exhibit a steeply decreasing cluster abundance with increasing richness. We derive observational scaling relations between cluster richness and observed cluster luminosity and cluster velocity dispersion; these scaling relations provide important physical calibrations for the clusters. The catalog can be used for studies of individual clusters, for comparisons with other sources such as X-ray clusters and AGNs, and, with proper correction for the relevant selection functions, also for statistical analyses of clusters., Comment: AASTeX, 62 pages, including 14 figures and 4 tables, submitted to ApJS. We present a new sample of 35 quasars selected from the FIRST radio survey and the Deeprange I-band survey (Postman et al. 1998, 2002). A comparison with the FIRST Bright Quasar survey samples reveals that this I-band selected sample is redder by 0.25-0.5 mag in B-R, and that the color difference is not explained by the higher mean redshift of this sample but must be intrinsic. Our small sample contains five quasars with unusually red colors, including three that appear very heavily reddened. Our data are fitted well with normal blue quasar spectra attenuated by more than 2.5 magnitudes of extinction in the I-band. The red quasars are only seen at low redshifts (z<1.3). Even with a magnitude limit I<20.5, our survey is deep enough to detect only the most luminous of these red quasars at z~1; similar objects at higher redshifts would fall below our in I-band limit. Indeed, the five most luminous objects (using dereddened magnitudes) with z<1.3 are all red. Our data strongly support the hypothesis that radio quasars are dominated by a previously undetected population of red, heavily obscured objects. Unless highly reddened quasars are preferentially also highly luminous, there must be an even larger, as yet undiscovered, population of red quasars at lower luminosity. We are likely to be finding only the most luminous tip of the red quasar iceberg. Five of our six z<1 quasars are associated with Deeprange cluster candidates of similar estimated redshifts. This association is very unlikely to be the result of chance. We used the HST WFPC2 to obtain I-band images of the centers of 81 brightest cluster galaxies (BCGs), drawn from a volume-limited sample of nearby BCGs. The images show a rich variety of morphological features, including multiple or double nuclei, dust, stellar disks, point source nuclei, and central surface brightness depressions. High resolution surface brightness profiles could be inferred for 60 galaxies. Of those, 88% have well-resolved cores. Twelve percent of the BCG sample lacks a well-resolved core; all but one of these BCGs have ``power-law'' profiles. Some of these galaxies have higher luminosities than any power-law galaxy identified by Faber et al. (1997), and have physical upper limits on the break radius well below the values observed for core galaxies of the same luminosity. These results support the idea that the central structure of early-type galaxies is bimodal in its physical properties, but also suggest that there exist high luminosity galaxies with power-law profiles (or unusually small cores). The BCGs in the latter category tend to fall at the low end of the BCG luminosity function and tend to have low values of the quantity alpha (the logarithmic slope of the metric luminosity as a function of radius, at 10 kpc). Since theoretical calculations have shown that the luminosities and alpha values of BCGs grow with time as a result of accretion, this suggests a scenario in which elliptical galaxies evolve from power-law profiles to core profiles through accretion and merging. We have carried out additional spectroscopic observations in the field of cluster Cl 1324+3011 at z = 0.76. Combined with the spectroscopy presented in Postman, Lubin & Oke (2001, AJ, 122, 1125), we now have spectroscopically confirmed 47 cluster members. With this significant number of redshifts, we measure accurately the cluster velocity dispersion to be 1016 (+126/-93) km/s. The distribution of velocity offsets is consistent with a Gaussian, indicating no substantial velocity substructure. As previously noted for other optically-selected clusters at redshifts of z > 0.5, a comparison between the X-ray luminosity (L_x) and the velocity dispersion (sigma) of Cl 1324+3011 implies that this cluster is underluminous in X-rays by a factor of ~3 - 40 when compared to the L_x - sigma relation for local and moderate-redshift clusters. We also examine the morphologies of those cluster members which have available high-angular-resolution imaging with the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). There are 22 spectroscopically-confirmed cluster members within the HST field-of-view. Twelve of these are visually classified as early-type (elliptical or S0) galaxies, implying an early-type fraction of 0.55 (+0.17/-0.14) in this cluster. This fraction is a factor of ~1.5 lower than that observed in nearby rich clusters. Confirming previous cluster studies, the results for cluster Cl 1324+3011, combined with morphological studies of other massive clusters at redshifts less than z = 1, suggest that the galaxy population in massive clusters is strongly evolving with redshift. This evolution implies that early-type galaxies are forming out of the excess of late-type (spiral, irregular, and peculiar) galaxies over the ~7 Gyr timescale., Comment: 22 pages, 7 figures; accepted for publication in Astronomical Journal

We used HST WFPC2 images to identify six early-type galaxies with surface- brightness profiles that decrease inward over a limited range of radii near their centers. The implied luminosity density profiles of these galaxies have local minima interior to their core break radii. NGC 3706 harbors a high surface brightness ring of starlight with radius ~20 pc. Its central structure may be related to that in the double-nucleus galaxies M31 and NGC 4486B. NGC 4406 and NGC 6876 have nearly flat cores that on close inspection are centrally depressed. Colors for both galaxies imply that this is not due to dust absorption. The surface brightness distributions of both galaxies are consistent with stellar tori that are more diffuse than the sharply defined system in NGC 3706. The remaining three galaxies are the brightest cluster galaxies in A260, A347, and A3574. Color information is not available for these objects, but they strongly resemble NGC 4406 and NGC 6876 in their cores. The thin ring in NGC 3706 may have formed dissipatively. The five other galaxies resemble the endpoints of some simulations of the merging of two gas-free stellar systems, each harboring a massive nuclear black hole. In one version of this scenario, diffuse stellar tori are produced when stars initially bound to one black hole are tidally stripped away by the second black hole. Alternatively, some inward-decreasing surface-brightness profiles may reflect the ejection of stars from a core during the hardening of the binary black hole created during the merger., Comment: 35 pages, 17 postscript figures, submitted to the Astronomical Journal

We have conducted an automated search for galaxy clusters within a contiguous 16 square degree I-band survey in the north Galactic hemisphere. A matched filter detection algorithm identifies 444 cluster candidates in the range 0.2 <= z <= 1.2. The full catalog is presented along with the results from a follow-up spectroscopic survey. The estimated redshift distribution of the cluster candidates is consistent with a constant comoving density over the range 0.2 <= z_est <= 0.8. A decline in the cluster space density by more than a factor of 3 over this redshift range is rejected at >99.9% confidence level. We find that the space density of Lambda_CL >= 40 clusters in our survey lies in the range (1.6 - 1.8) x 10^{-5} h_{75}^{3} Mpc^{-3}, ~1.5 times higher than the local distribution of comparably rich Abell RC >= 0 clusters. The Lambda_CL distribution is consistent with a power-law. The discrepancy between the space density of Abell clusters and the clusters in this survey declines quickly as Lambda_CL increases, suggesting that the difference at lower richness is due to significant incompleteness in the Abell catalog. A percolation analysis reveals that 10 - 20% of the spectroscopically confirmed distant clusters are linked into superclusters at overdensities between 10 < {\delta\rho \over \rho} < 50, similar to what is seen in the local cluster distribution. The mass function of clusters of galaxies is determined from 400 deg^2 of early commissioning imaging data of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey; ~300 clusters in the redshift range z = 0.1 - 0.2 are used. Clusters are selected using two independent selection methods: a Matched Filter and a red-sequence color magnitude technique. The two methods yield consistent results. The cluster mass function is compared with large-scale cosmological simulations. We find a best-fit cluster normalization relation of sigma_8*omega_m^0.6 = 0.33 +- 0.03 (for 0.1 ~< omega_m ~< 0.4), or equivalently sigma_8 = (0.16/omega_m)^0.6. The amplitude of this relation is significantly lower than the previous canonical value, implying that either omega_m is lower than previously expected (omega_m = 0.16 if sigma_8 = 1) or sigma_8 is lower than expected (sigma_8 = 0.7 if omega_m = 0.3). The best-fit mass function parameters are omega_m = 0.19 (+0.08,-0.07) and sigma_8 = 0.9 (+0.3,-0.2). We present a comparison of X-ray and optical luminosities and luminosity functions of cluster candidates from a joint optical/X-ray survey, the ROSAT Optical X-Ray Survey. Completely independent X-ray and optical catalogs of 23 ROSAT fields (4.8 deg2) were created by a matched-filter optical algorithm and by a wavelet technique in the X-ray. We directly compare the results of the optical and X-ray selection techniques. The matched-filter technique detected 74% (26 out of 35) of the most reliable cluster candidates in the X-ray-selected sample; the remainder could be either constellations of X-ray point sources or z>1 clusters. The matched-filter technique identified approximately 3 times the number of candidates (152 candidates) found in the X-ray survey of nearly the same sky (57 candidates). While the estimated optical and X-ray luminosities of clusters of galaxies are correlated, the intrinsic scatter in this relationship is very large. We can reproduce the number and distribution of optical clusters with a model defined by the X-ray luminosity function and by an LX Lambda cl relation if H0=75 km s-1 Mpc-1 and if the LX Lambda cl relation is steeper than the expected LX Lambda 2cl. On statistical grounds, a bimodal distribution of X-ray luminous and X-ray faint clusters is unnecessary to explain our observations. Follow-up work is required to confirm whether the clusters without bright X-ray counterparts are simply X-ray faint for their optical luminosity because of their low mass or youth or are a distinct population of clusters that do not, for some reason, have dense intracluster media. We suspect that these optical clusters are low-mass systems, with correspondingly low X-ray temperatures and luminosities, or that they are not yet completely virialized systems., Comment: 11 pages, 3 figures. We present and analyze the optical and X-ray catalogs of moderate-redshift cluster candidates from the ROSAT Optical X-ray Survey, or ROXS. The survey covers 4.8 square degrees (23 ROSAT PSPC pointings). The cross-correlated cluster catalogs were constructed by comparing two independent catalogs extracted from the optical and X-ray bandpasses, using a matched filter technique for the optical data and a wavelet technique for the X-ray data. We cross-id cluster candidates in each catalog. In Paper II we present the cluster catalogs and a numerical simulation of ROXS. We also present color-magnitude plots for several cluster candidates, and examine the prominence of the red sequence in each. We find that the X-ray clusters analyzed in this way do not all have a prominent red sequence. We conclude that while the red sequence may be distinct for massive, virialized clusters, it may be less so for lower-mass clusters at even moderate redshifts. Given the importance of clusters to the fields of cosmology and galaxy evolution, it is critical to understand how the cluster detection process affects (biases) ones scientific conclusions derived from a given cluster sample. I review the astrophysics, algorithms, and observational constraints that must be considered when attempting to assess cluster selection biases and their impact on the scientific constraints derived from multi-wavelength cluster surveys. One of the most vital observational clues for unraveling the origin of Brightest Cluster Galaxies (BCG) is the observed alignment of the BCGs with their host cluster and its surroundings. We have examined the BCG-cluster alignment effect, using clusters of galaxies detected from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). We find that the BCGs are preferentially aligned with the principal axis of their hosts, to a much higher redshift (z >~ 0.3) than probed by previous studies (z <~ 0.1). The alignment effect strongly depends on the magnitude difference of the BCG and the second and third brightest cluster members: we find a strong alignment effect for the dominant BCGs, while less dominant BCGs do not show any departure from random alignment with respect to the cluster. We therefore claim that the alignment process originates from the same process that makes the BCG grow dominant, be it direct mergers in the early stage of cluster formation, or a later process that resembles the galactic cannibalism scenario. We present a comparison of three cluster finding algorithms from imaging data using Monte Carlo simulations of clusters embedded in a 25 deg^2 region of Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) imaging data: the Matched Filter (MF; Postman et al. 1996), the Adaptive Matched Filter (AMF; Kepner et al. 1999) and a color-magnitude filtered Voronoi Tessellation Technique (VTT). Among the two matched filters, we find that the MF is more efficient in detecting faint clusters, whereas the AMF evaluates the redshifts and richnesses more accurately, therefore suggesting a hybrid method (HMF) that combines the two. The HMF outperforms the VTT when using a background that is uniform, but it is more sensitive to the presence of a non-uniform galaxy background than is the VTT; this is due to the assumption of a uniform background in the HMF model. We thus find that for the detection thresholds we determine to be appropriate for the SDSS data, the performance of both algorithms are similar; we present the selection function for each method evaluated with these thresholds as a function of redshift and richness. For simulated clusters generated with a Schechter luminosity function (M_r^* = -21.5 and alpha = -1.1) both algorithms are complete for Abell richness >= 1 clusters up to z ~ 0.4 for a sample magnitude limited to r = 21. While the cluster parameter evaluation shows a mild correlation with the local background density, the detection efficiency is not significantly affected by the background fluctuations, unlike previous shallower surveys., Comment: 38 pages, 15 figures, Accepted for publication in AJ

The Sloan Digital Sky Survey is one of the first multicolor photometric and spectroscopic surveys designed to measure the statistical properties of galaxies within the local Universe. In this Letter we present some of the initial results on the angular 2-point correlation function measured from the early SDSS galaxy data. The form of the correlation function, over the magnitude interval 18

New photometric and spectroscopic observations of galaxies in the directions of three distant clusters are presented as part of our on-going high-redshift cluster survey. The clusters are CL1324+3011 at z = 0.76, CL1604+4304 at z = 0.90, and CL1604+4321 at z = 0.92. The observed x-ray luminosities in these clusters are at least a factor of 3 smaller than those observed in clusters with similar velocity dispersions at z <= 0.4. These clusters contain a significant population of elliptical-like galaxies, although these galaxies are not nearly as dominant as in massive clusters at z <= 0.5. We also find a large population of blue cluster members. Defining an active galaxy as one in which the rest equivalent width of [OII] is greater than 15 Angstroms, the fraction of active cluster galaxies, within the central 1.0 Mpc, is 45%. In the field population, we find that 65% of the galaxies with redshifts between z = 0.40 and z = 0.85 are active, while the fraction is 79% for field galaxies at z > 0.85. The star formation rate normalized by the rest AB B-band magnitude, SFRN, increases as the redshift increases at a given evolving luminosity. At a given redshift, however, SFRN decreases linearly with increasing luminosity indicating a remarkable insensitivity of the star formation rate to the intrinsic luminosity of the galaxy over the range -18 >= ABB >= -22. Cluster galaxies in the central 1 Mpc regions exhibit depressed star formation rates. We are able to measure significant evolution in the B-band luminosity function over the range 0.1 <= z <= 1. We measured infrared surface brightness fluctuation (SBF) distances to an isotropically-distributed sample of 16 distant galaxies with redshifts reaching 10,000 km/s using the near-IR camera and multi-object spectrometer (NICMOS) on the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). The excellent spatial resolution, very low background, and brightness of the IR fluctuations yielded the most distant SBF measurements to date. Twelve nearby galaxies were also observed and used to calibrate the F160W (1.6 micron) SBF distance scale. Of these, three have Cepheid variable star distances measured with HST and eleven have optical I-band SBF distance measurements. A distance modulus of 18.5 mag to the Large Magellanic Cloud was adopted for this calibration. We present the F160W SBF Hubble diagram and find a Hubble constant Ho=76 +/- 1.3 (1-sigma statistical) +/- 6 (systematic) km/s/Mpc. This result is insensitive to the velocity model used to correct for local bulk motions. Restricting the fit to the six most distant galaxies yields the smallest value of Ho=72 +/- 2.3 km/s/Mpc consistent with the data. This 6% decrease in the Hubble constant is consistent with the hypothesis that the Local Group inhabits an under-dense region of the universe, but is also consistent with the best-fit value of Ho=76 km/s/Mpc at the 1.5-sigma level., Comment: 39 pages, 7 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

Constraints on the validity of the hierarchical gravitational instability theory and the evolution of biasing are presented based upon measurements of higher order clustering statistics in the Deeprange Survey, a catalog of $\sim710,000$ galaxies with $I_{AB} \le 24$ derived from a KPNO 4m CCD imaging survey of a contiguous $4^{\circ} \times 4^{\circ}$ region. We compute the 3-point and 4-point angular correlation functions using a direct estimation for the former and the counts-in-cells technique for both. The skewness $s_3$ decreases by a factor of $\simeq 3-4$ as galaxy magnitude increases over the range $17 \le I \le 22.5$ ($0.1 \lesssim z \lesssim 0.8$). This decrease is consistent with a small {\it increase} of the bias with increasing redshift, but not by more than a factor of 2 for the highest redshifts probed. Our results are strongly inconsistent, at about the $3.5-4 \sigma$ level, with typical cosmic string models in which the initial perturbations follow a non-Gaussian distribution - such models generally predict an opposite trend in the degree of bias as a function of redshift. We also find that the scaling relation between the 3-point and 4-point correlation functions remains approximately invariant over the above magnitude range. The simplest model that is consistent with these constraints is a universe in which an initially Gaussian perturbation spectrum evolves under the influence of gravity combined with a low level of bias between the matter and the galaxies that decreases slightly from $z \sim 0.8$ to the current epoch., Comment: 28 pages, 4 figures included, ApJ, accepted, minor changes

Cosmological simulations predict that a large fraction of the baryonic mass of the Universe exists as 10^5-10^7 K diffuse, X-ray emitting gas, tracing low density filament and sheet-like structures exterior to massive clusters of galaxies. If present, this gas helps reconcile the current shortfall in observed baryon counts relative to the predictions of the standard Big Bang model. We present here the discovery and analysis of a 5-sigma significance half-degree filamentary structure, present in both I-band galaxy surface density and unresolved X-ray emission in a deep ROSAT PSPC field. The estimated diffuse X-ray emission component of this structure has a surface brightness of \~ 1.6 x 10^(-16) erg/s/cm^2/arcmin^2 (0.5- 2 keV), comparable to the predictions for inter-cluster gas and may represent a direct detection of this currently unconfirmed baryonic component., Comment: 10 pages, uses aaspp4.sty, 2 figures included, accepted ApJ Letters

Our understanding of the cosmic history of galaxy clusters has recently been enhanced due to an extensive series of observations including faint spectroscopic data (especially those obtained at the Keck Observatory), deep optical and NIR imaging from the ground and in space, morphological data from HST, and new constraints on the evolution of the intracluster medium from ROSAT and ASCA. When such observations are applied to complete, objectively derived catalogs of clusters, our constraints on cluster formation and evolution become quite confined. A picture is emerging in which the bulk of cluster formation starts at z >= 2, yielding cluster potentials that are well established by z ~ 1, and there is little substantial evolution of the cluster galaxy population since z ~ 0.4. By virtue of their high galaxy space densities and their large spatial separations, clusters are efficient and accurate tracers of the large-scale density and velocity fields. Substantial progress has been made over the past decade in the construction of homogeneous, objectively derived cluster catalogs and in characterizing the spatial distribution of clusters. Consequently, the constraints on viable models for the growth of structure have been refined. A review of the status of cluster-based observations of large-scale structure is presented here, including discussions of the second and higher order moments, the dependence of clustering on richness (mass), recent and new measurements of bulk flows, and a new constraint on the cluster mass function in the range 0.7 < z < 1., Comment: 13 pages, 5 figures. We present an extensive photometric and spectroscopic study of two high-redshift clusters of galaxies based on data obtained from the Keck 10m telescopes and the Hubble Space Telescope. The clusters CL0023+0423 (z=0.84) and CL1604+4304 (z=0.90) are part of a multi-wavelength program to study nine candidate clusters at z > 0.6 (Oke, Postman & Lubin 1998). Based on these observations, we study in detail both the field and cluster populations. From the confirmed cluster members, we find that CL0023+0423 actually consists of two components separated by ~2900 km/s. A kinematic analysis indicates that the two components are a poor cluster with ~3 x 10^{14} solar masses and a less massive group with 10^{13} solar masses. CL1604+4304 is a centrally concentrated, rich cluster at z = 0.8967 with a velocity dispersion of 1226 km/s and a mass of ~3 x 10^{15} solar masses. Approximately 57% and 50% of the galaxies show high levels of star formation in CL0023+0423 and CL1604+4304, respectively. These numbers are significantly larger than those found in intermediate redshift clusters. We also observe many old, red galaxies. Found mainly in CL1604+4304, they have spectra consistent with passive stellar evolution, typical of the early-type galaxies in low and intermediate-redshift clusters. We have calculated their ages by comparing their spectral energy distributions to standard Bruzual & Charlot evolutionary models. We find that their colors are consistent with models having an exponentially decreasing star formation rate with a time constant of 0.6 Gyr. We observe a significant luminosity brightening in our brightest cluster galaxies. Compared to BCGs at z < 0.1, we find a luminosity increase of ~1 mag in the rest B-band and ~0.8 mag in the rest V-band., Comment: 65 pages, 21 figures. We present a description of the observations and data reduction procedures for an extensive spectroscopic and multi-band photometric study of nine high redshift, optically-selected cluster candidates. The primary goal of the survey is to establish new constraints on cluster and galaxy evolution, with specific emphasis on the evolution of galaxy morphology and on the star-formation history of the galaxies within and around distant clusters. We have measured 892 new redshifts for galaxies with R <= 23.3. The data will also serve as deep probes of the foreground and background large-scale structures. The observations include broad band optical imaging and spectroscopy with the Low Resolution Imaging Spectrograph at the 10 meter W. M. Keck Observatory telescope; K-band imaging with IRIM at the 4 meter Kitt Peak National Observatory telescope; and deep, high angular resolution imaging with the WFPC2 onboard the Hubble Space Telescope. We also describe the procedures used to obtain morphological information. We have established that six of the nine cluster candidates are indeed real space density enhancements and are representative of those typically associated with clusters of galaxies. The remaining three candidates appear to be projections of several smaller groups at widely separated distances. We present constraints on the evolution of large-scale structure from a catalog of 710,000 galaxies with I_AB <= 24 derived from a KPNO 4m CCD imaging survey of a contiguous 4 deg x 4 deg region. The advantage of using large contiguous surveys for measuring clustering properties on even modest angular scales is substantial: the effects of cosmic scatter are strongly suppressed. We provide highly accurate measurements of the two-point angular correlation function, w(theta), as a function of magnitude on scales up to 1.5 degrees. The amplitude of w(theta) declines by a factor of ~10 over the range 16 <= I <= 20 but only by a factor of 2 - 3 over the range 20 < I <= 23. For a redshift dependence of the spatial correlation function, xi(r), parameterized as xi(r,z)=(r/r_o)^(-gamma)(1 + z)^(-[3+epsilon]), we find r_o=5.2 +/- 0.4 Mpc/h, and epsilon >= 0 for I <= 20. This is in good agreement with the results from local redshift surveys. At I > 20, our best fit values shift towards lower r_o and more negative epsilon. A strong covariance between r_o and epsilon prevent us from rejecting epsilon > 0 even at faint magnitudes but if epsilon > 1, we strongly reject r_o <= 4/h Mpc (co-moving). The above expression for xi(r,z) and our data give a correlation length of r_o(z=0.5) approx 3.0 +/- 0.4 Mpc/h, about a factor of 2 larger than the correlation length at z = 0.5 derived from the Canada--France Redshift Survey (CFRS). The small volume sampled by the CFRS and other deep redshift probes, however, make these spatial surveys strongly susceptible to cosmic scatter and will tend to bias their derived correlation lengths low. Our galaxy counts agree well with those from the HDF survey and, thus, argue against a significant inclusion of sub-galactic components in the latter census for I < 24., Comment: 31 pages, including 11 figures. We used HST to obtain surface brightness fluctuation (SBF) observations of four nearby brightest cluster galaxies (BCG) to calibrate the BCG Hubble diagram of Lauer & Postman (1992). This BCG Hubble diagram contains 114 galaxies covering the full celestial sphere and is volume limited to 15,000 km/s, providing excellent sampling of the far field Hubble flow. The SBF zero point is based on the Cepheid calibration of the ground I_KC method (Tonry et al. 1997) as extended to the WFPC2 F814W filter by Ajhar et al. (1997). The BCG globular cluster luminosity functions give distances essentially identical to the SBF results. Using the velocities and SBF distances of the four BCG alone gives H_0 = 82 +/- 8 km/s/Mpc in the CMB frame, valid on ~4,500 km/s scales. Use of BCG as photometric redshift estimators allows the BCG Hubble diagram to be calibrated independently of recession velocities, yielding a far field H_0 = 89 +/- 10 km/s/Mpc with an effective depth of ~11,000 km/s. The error in this case is dominated by the photometric cosmic scatter in using BCG as distance estimators. The concordance of the present results with other recent H_0 determinations, and a review of theoretical treatments on perturbations in the near field Hubble flow, argue that going to the far field removes an important source of uncertainty, but that there is not a large systematic error to be corrected for to begin with. We model the surface brightness profiles of a sample of 119 Abell Brightest Cluster Galaxies (BCG), finding a generalised deVaucouleurs R^{1/n} law, where n is a free parameter, to be appropriate. Departures from the R^{1/4} law are shown to be a real feature of galaxy profiles, not due to observational errors or coupling of n with the other model parameters. BCG typically have values of n greater than 4. The shape parameter n is shown to correlate with effective half-light radius, such that the larger BCG have larger values of n. This continues a trend noticed amongst ordinary elliptical galaxies and dwarf ellipticals, such that the fainter galaxies have smaller values of n., Comment: To appear in Ap.J., 16 pages

We present a study of the surface density profiles of the clusters of galaxies from the Palomar Distant Cluster Survey (Postman et al. 1996). The survey contains a total of 79 clusters of galaxies, covering the estimated redshift range of $0.2 \simless z \simless 1.2$. We have analyzed the richest clusters in this sample and find that the typical Palomar cluster has a surface density profile of $r^{-1.4}$ ($r \ge 0.10~h^{-1}~{\rm Mpc}$) and a core radius of $0.05~h^{-1}~{\rm Mpc}$. There may be an indication that the slope of the surface density profile steepens with increasing redshift, though the observational uncertainty is at present too large to be conclusive. We report observations of three gravitationally lensed supernovae (SNe) in the Cluster Lensing And Supernova survey with Hubble (CLASH) Multi-Cycle Treasury program. These objects, SN CLO12Car (z = 1.28), SN CLN12Did (z = 0.85), and SN CLA11Tib (z = 1.14), are located behind three different clusters, MACSJ1720.2+3536 (z = 0.391), RXJ1532.9+3021 (z = 0.345), and A383 (z = 0.187), respectively. Each SN was detected in Hubble Space Telescope optical and infrared images. Based on photometric classification, we find that SNe CLO12Car and CLN12Did are likely to be Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia), while the classification of SN CLA11Tib is inconclusive. Using multi-color light-curve fits to determine a standardized SN Ia luminosity distance, we infer that SN CLO12Car was approx. 1.0 +/- 0.2 mag brighter than field SNe Ia at a similar redshift and ascribe this to gravitational lens magnification. Similarly, SN CLN12Did is approx. 0.2 +/- 0.2 mag brighter than field SNe Ia. We derive independent estimates of the predicted magnification from CLASH strong+weak-lensing maps of the clusters (in magnitude units, 2.5 log10 μ): 0.83 +/- 0.16 mag for SN CLO12Car, 0.28 +/- 0.08 mag for SN CLN12Did, and 0.43 +/- 0.11 mag for SN CLA11Tib. The two SNe Ia provide a new test of the cluster lens model predictions: we find that the magnifications based on the SN Ia brightness and those predicted by the lens maps are consistent. Our results herald the promise of future observations of samples of cluster-lensed SNe Ia (from the ground or space) to help illuminate the dark-matter distribution in clusters of galaxies, through the direct determination of absolute magnifications.

The Advance Mirror Technology Development (AMTD) project is a three year effort initiated in FY12 to mature by at least a half TRL step six critical technologies required to enable 4 to 8 meter UVOIR space telescope primary mirror assemblies for both general astrophysics and ultra-high contrast observations of exoplanets. AMTD uses a science-driven systems engineering approach. We mature technologies required to enable the highest priority science AND result in a high-performance low-cost low-risk system. To provide the science community with options, we are pursuing multiple technology paths. We have assembled an outstanding team from academia, industry, and government with extensive expertise in astrophysics and exoplanet characterization, and in the design/manufacture of monolithic and segmented space telescopes. A key accomplishment is deriving engineering specifications for advanced normal-incidence monolithic and segmented mirror systems needed to enable both general astrophysics and ultra-high contrast observations of exoplanets missions as a function of potential launch vehicles and their mass and volume constraints.

Advanced Mirror Technology Development (AMTD) is a multi-year effort to systematically mature to TRL-6 the critical technologies needed to produce 4-m or larger flight-qualified UVOIR mirrors by 2018 so that a viable mission can be considered by the 2020 Decadal Review. This technology must enable missions capable of both general astrophysics & ultra-high contrast observations of exoplanets. To accomplish our objective, we use a science-driven systems engineering approach. We mature technologies required to enable the highest priority science AND result in a high-performance low-cost low-risk system.

The Advanced Technology Large-Aperture Space Telescope (ATLAST) is a concept for an 8-meter to 16-meter UVOIR space observatory for launch in the 2025-2030 era. ATLAST will allow astronomers to answer fundamental questions at the forefront of modern astrophysics, including "Is there life elsewhere in the Galaxy?" We present a range of science drivers and the resulting performance requirements for ATLAST (8 to 16 milliarcsecond angular resolution, diffraction limited imaging at 0.5 m wavelength, minimum collecting area of 45 square meters, high sensitivity to light wavelengths from 0.1 m to 2.4 m, high stability in wavefront sensing and control). We also discuss the priorities for technology development needed to enable the construction of ATLAST for a cost that is comparable to current generation observatory-class space missions. NASA s planned Ares V cargo vehicle with its 10 meter diameter fairing and ~60,000 kg payload mass to L2 offers the potential to launch entirely new classes of space science missions such as 8-meter monolithic aperture telescopes, 12- meter aperture x-ray telescopes, 16 to 24 meter segmented telescopes and highly capable outer planet missions. The paper will summarize the current Ares V baseline performance capabilities and review potential mission concepts enabled by these capabilities.

The technologies needed to build an affordable larger Ultraviolet/Optical Space Telescope are presented.

This grant final report lists bibliographic citations for three papers published through support of NAG5-11347 "A Detailed Study of Two Optically-Selected, High Red-Shift Clusters of Galaxies."

Lauer and Postman (LP) observed that all Abell clusters with redshifts less than 15,000 km/s appear to be participating in a bulk flow of 689 km/s with respect to the cosmic microwave background. We find this result difficult to reconcile with all popular models for large-scale structure formation that assume Gaussian initial conditions. This conclusion is based on Monte Carlo realizations of the LP data, drawn from large particle-mesh N-body simulations for six different models of the initial power spectrum (standard, tilted, and Omega(sub 0) = 0.3 cold dark matter, and two variants of the primordial baryon isocurvature model). We have taken special care to treat properly the longest-wavelength components of the power spectra. The simulations are sampled, 'observed,' and analyzed as identically as possible to the LP cluster sample. Large-scale bulk flows as measured from clusters in the simulations are in excellent agreement with those measured from the grid: the clusters do not exhibit any strong velocity bias on large scales. Bulk flows with amplitude as large as that reported by LP are not uncommon in the Monte Carlo data stes; the distribution of measured bulk flows before error bias subtraction is rougly Maxwellian, with a peak around 400 km/s. However the chi squared of the observed bulk flow, taking into account the anisotropy of the error ellipsoid, is much more difficult to match in the simulations. The models examined are ruled out at confidence levels between 94% and 98%.

We study the topology of large-scale structure through a genus curve measurement of the recent Abell catalog redshift survey of Postman, Huchra, and Geller (1992). The structure is found to be spongelike near median density and to exhibit isolated superclusters and voids at high and low densities, respectively. The genus curve shows a slight shift toward 'meatball' topology, but remains consistent with the hypothesis of Gaussian random phase initial conditions. The amplitude of the genus curve corresponds to a power-law spectrum with index n = 0.21(sub -0.47 sup +0.43) on scales of 48/h Mpc or to a cold dark matter power spectrum with omega h = 0.36(sub -0.17 sup +0.46).

The IRAS data base is used to compare the mid-FIR properties of two classes of radio-loud AGN whose LF radio emission arises in large-scale radio lobes. The two primary samples consist of 42 quasars and 75 narrow-line radio galaxies selected on the basis of their 178 MHz radio flux density from the 3 CR catalog and having redshifts of not less than 0.3 and Galactic latitudes of not less than 20 deg. The mid-FIR emission was found to be about four times stronger on average in the quasars than in the radio galaxies. Even though the radio galaxies are systematically weaker mid-FIR sources than the quasars, they are still exceptionally luminous (about 10 exp 12 solar luminosities) in the mid-FIR. These powerful radio galaxies contain potent sources of radiation that are either hidden or energetically unimportant at shorter wavelengths.

Redshifts are acquired for a complete sample of 351 Abell clusters with tenth-ranked galaxy magnitudes (m10) less than or equal to 16.5, including 115 entirely new cluster redshifts. Analysis of the spatial distribution of these clusters reveals no clustering on scales larger than 75/h Mpc. The correlation length is 20.0 (+/-4.3)/h Mpc, consistent with the results from other surveys. The frequency of voids with radii of order 60/h Mpc or less is consistent with the form and amplitude of the observed two-point correlation function. There is no significant difference between the clustering properties of clusters with RC = 0 and RC not less than 1. A percolation analysis yields 23 superclusters, 17 of which are new. The superclusters are not significantly elongated in the radial direction; large-scale peculiar motions are of order 1000 km/s or less.

Redshifts have been measured for a complete sample of 145 Abell clusters of galaxies of median redshift 0.16 covering a 561 sq deg region at high Galactic latitude. Clustering on scales greater than about 70/h Mpc cannot be detected. A large void of diameter about 20,000 km/s seen in maps of the cluster distribution is consistent with smaller scale behavior of the correlation function of the survey. Large-scale peculiar motions are about 1000 km/s or less, a limit inconsistent with the claimed detection by Bahcall et al. (1986) of peculiar motions of about 2000 km/s.

The spatial distributions of the IRAS and the optical galaxies in the first CfA slice are compared. The IRAS galaxies are generally less clustered than optical ones, but their distribution is essentially identical to that of late-type optical galaxies. The discrepancy between the clustering properties of the IRAS and optical samples in the CfA slice region is found to be entirely due to the paucity of IRAS galaxies in the core of the Coma cluster. The spatial distributions of the IRAS and the optical galaxies, both late and early types, outside the dense core of the Coma cluster are entirely consistent with each other. This conflicts with the prediction of the linear biasing scenario.
