Search

G292.0+1.8 is the Cas A-like supernova remnant containing the young pulsar PSR J1124-5916, which powers a compact torus-like pulsar wind nebula with a jet visible in X-rays. We have performed deep optical observations of the pulsar field to detect the optical counterpart of the pulsar and its nebula. The observations were carried out using the direct imaging mode of FORS2 at the ESO VLT/UT1 telescope in the V, R, and I bands. We also analyzed archival images obtained with the Chandra/ACIS-I, ACIS-S, and HRC-S in X-rays. In all three optical bands we detect a faint elliptical nebulosity, whose brightness peak and center position are consistent at a sub-arcsecond level with the X-ray position of the pulsar. The field is densely packed with background stars, but after subtraction of these stars the morphology of the object and the orientation of its major axis appear to be in a good agreement with the brightest inner part of the pulsar nebula torus region seen almost edge on in X-rays. Within the nebulosity we do not resolve any point-like optical object that could be identified with the pulsar and estimate its contribution to the observed nebulosity flux as <~20%. Extracting the X-ray spectrum from the physical region equivalent to the optical source position and extent and combining that with the measured optical fluxes, we compile a tentative multi-wavelength spectrum of the inner part of the nebula. Within uncertainties of the interstellar extinction towards G292.0+1.8 it is reminiscent of either the Crab or PSR B540-69 and J0205+6449 pulsar wind nebula spectra. The position, morphology, and spectral properties of the detected nebulosity suggest that it is the likely optical counterpart of the pulsar plus its wind nebula system in G292.0+1.8., Comment: 10 pages, 6 figures, A&A, accepted

The International Gamma-Ray Astrophyiscs Laboratory (INTEGRAL) is discovering a large number of new hard X-ray sources, many of them being HMXBs. The identification and spectral characterization of their optical/infrared counterparts is a necessary step to undertake detailed study of these systems. In particular, the determination of the spectral type is crucial in the case of the new class of Supergiant Fast X-ray Transients (SFXTs), which show X-ray properties common to other objects. We used the ESO/NTT SofI spectrograph to observe proposed IR counterparts to HMXBs, obtaining Ks medium resolution spectra (R = 1320) with a S/N >= 100. We classified them through comparison with published atlases. We were able to spectrally classify the six sources. This allowed us to ascribe one of them to the new class of SFXTs and confirm the membership of two sources to this class. We confirmed the spectral classification, derived from optical spectroscopy, of a known system, 4U 1907-09, showing for the first time its infrared spectrum. The spectral classification was also used to estimate the distance of the sources. We compared the extinction as derived from X-ray data with effective interstellar extinction obtained from our data, discussing the absorption component due to the circumstellar environment, which we observed in four systems; in particular, intrinsic absorption seems to emerge as a typical feature of the entire class of SFXTs., Comment: 8 pages, 6 figures, 3 tables, accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics

We investigate the nature of OGLE05155332-6925581, one of the brightest members of the enigmatic group of Double Periodic Variables (DPVs) recently found in the Magellanic Clouds. The modeling of archival orbital light curves (LCs), along with the analysis of the radial velocities suggest that this object is a semi--detached binary with the less massive star transferring matter to the more massive and less evolved star, in an Algol--like configuration. We find evidence for additional orbital variability and H$\alpha$ emission, likely caused by an accretion disc around the primary star. As in the case of $\beta Lyr$ the circumprimary disc seems to be more luminous than the primary, but we do not detect orbital period changes. We find that the LC follows a loop in the color--magnitude diagram during the long cycle; the system is redder when brighter and the rising phase is bluer than during decline. Infrared excess is also present. The source of the long--term periodicity is not eclipsed, indicating its circumbinary origin. Strong asymmetries, discrete absorption components (DACs) and a $\gamma$ shift are new and essential observational properties in the infrared H I lines. The DACs strength and RV follow a saw--teeth pattern during the orbital cycle. We suggest that the system experiences supercycles of mass outflow feeding a circumbinary disc. Mass exchange and mass loss could produce comparable but opposite effects in the orbital period on a long time scale, resulting in a quasi--constancy of this parameter., Comment: submitted to MNRAS

We present an analysis of UVES and MIKE (ground based) high resolution and Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer spectra of two novel and photometrically variable bright blue stars in the SMC; OGLE004336.91-732637.7 and the periodically occulted star OGLE004633.76-731204.3. The light curves of these stars exhibit multiple frequencies, and their spectra are similar. The latter are dominated by absorption/emission features produced in a circumstellar (CS) envelope whereas photospheric features are barely visible and forbidden emission lines are not visible. Modeling of spectral features indicates similar physical conditions for the CS envelope in both stars. An optically thick, slowly and thermally stratified disk. OGLE004633.76-731204.3 is noteworthy in showing blue discrete absorption components ("BACs") in their spectra possibly indicating the shock interaction between high velocity and low velocity material. Optical spectra from two spectra separated by 5 years show little change in the radial velocity over this period. However because these observations happen to be made in roughly similar phases over their long period, these suggest only that the stars are not in close binaries. We interpret the occultations and additional photometric nearly periodic variability in OGLE004633.76-731204.3 as due to covering of the star by a density modulation in a sector of a quasi-Keplerian circumstellar disk. Altogether, we suggest that these stars are prototypes of a larger group of stars, which we dub the "bgBe's" and discuss their similarities and differences with respect to the well known sgB[e] variables. Although OGLE004336.91-732637.7 appears to be a member the open cluster NGC 242, the evolutionary context of these stars is unclear., Comment: 26 pages, 10 figures

The supersoft X-ray binary RX J0513.9-6951 shows cyclic changes between optical-low / X-ray-on states and optical-high / X-ray-off states. It is supposed to be accreting close to the Eddington-critical limit and driven by "accretion wind evolution". We seek to derive the variations in the characteristic time scales of the long-term optical light curve and to determine the implications for the physical parameters of the system. We used existing and new optical monitoring observations covering a total time span of 14 years and compared the durations of the low and high states with the model calculations of Hachisu & Kato. The cycle lengths and especially the durations of the optical high states show a longterm modulation with variations that, according to the accretion wind evolution model, would imply variations in the mass transfer rate by a factor of 5 on timescales of years., Comment: 6 Pages, 5 Figures

Aims: We performed deep optical observations of the field of an old, fast-moving radio pulsar PSR B1133+16 in an attempt to detect its optical counterpart and a bow shock nebula. Methods: The observations were carried out using the direct imaging mode of FORS1 at the ESO VLT/UT1 telescope in the B, R, and H_alpha bands. We also used archival images of the same field obtained with the VLT in the B band and with the Chandra/ACIS in X-rays. Results: In the B band we detected a faint (B=28.1+/-0.3) source that may be the optical counterpart of PSR B1133+16, as it is positionally consistent with the radio pulsar and with the X-ray counterpart candidate published earlier. Its upper limit in the R band implies a color index B-R <0.5, which is compatible with the index values for most pulsars identified in the optical range. The derived optical luminosity and its ratio to the X-ray luminosity of the candidate are consistent with expected values derived from a sample of pulsars detected in both spectral domains. No Balmer bow shock was detected, implying a low density of ambient matter around the pulsar. However, in the X-ray and H_alpha images we found the signature of a trail extending ~4"-5" behind the pulsar and coinciding with the direction of its proper motion. If confirmed by deeper studies, this is the first time such a trail has been seen in the optical and X-ray wavelengths. We present new optical spectroscopy and photometry, 2MASS infrared observations and 24 years of combined AAVSO and AFOEV photometry of the symbiotic star candidate \ae. The long-term light curve is characterized by outbursts lasting several years and having a slow decline of $\sim 2 \times 10^{-4}$ mag/day. The whole range of variability of the star in the $V$ band is about 4 magnitudes. The periodogram of the photometric data reveals strong signals at $\sim$ 342 and 171 days. The presence of the emission feature at $\lambda$ 6830 \AA at minimum and the detection of absorption lines of a $\sim$ K5 type star confirm the symbiotic classification and suggest that AE Cir is a new member of the small group of s-type yellow symbiotic stars. We estimate a distance of 9.4 kpc. Our spectrum taken at the high state shows a much flatter spectral energy distribution, the disappearance of the $\lambda$ 6830 \AA emission feature and the weakness of the He II 4686 emission relative to the Balmer emission lines. Our observations indicate the presence of emission line flickering in time scales of minutes in 2001. The peculiar character of \ae is revealed in the visibility of the secondary star at the high and low state, the light curve resembling a dwarf nova superoutburst and the relatively short low states. Detailed studies of Be stars in environments with different metallicities like the Magellanic Clouds or the Galactic bulge are necessary to understand the formation and evolution mechanisms of the circumstellar disks. However, a detailed study of Be stars in the direction of the bulge of our own galaxy has not been performed until now. We report the first systematic search for Be star candidates in the direction of the Galactic Bulge. We present the catalogue, give a brief description of the stellar variability seen, and show some light curve examples. We searched for stars matching specific criteria of magnitude, color and variability in the I band. Our search was conducted on the 48 OGLE II fields of the Galactic Bulge.This search has resulted in 29053 Be star candidates, 198 of them showing periodic light variations. Nearly 1500 stars in this final sample are almost certainly Be stars, providing an ideal sample for spectroscopic multiobject follow-up studies., Comment: Accepted for publication in A & A

System parameters of the object LTT560 are determined in order to clarify its nature and evolutionary status. We apply time-series photometry to reveal orbital modulations of the light curve, time-series spectroscopy to measure radial velocities of features from both the primary and the secondary star, and flux-calibrated spectroscopy to derive temperatures of both components. We find that LTT560 is composed of a low temperature T~7500K DA white dwarf as the primary and an M5.5+-1 main-sequence star as the secondary component. The current orbital period is Porb=3.54(07)h. We derive a mass ratio Msec/Mwd = 0.36(03) and estimate the distance to d=25-40pc. Long-term variation of the orbital light curve and an additional H-alpha emission component on the white dwarf indicate activity in the system, probably in the form of flaring and/or accretion events., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A

We have taken K-band spectroscopy of a sample of 13 pre-CVs in order to examine them for anomalous chemical abundances. In particular, we study the strength of the 12CO and 13CO absorption bands that have been found diminished and enhanced, respectively, in similar studies of CVs. All our systems show CO abundances that are within the range observed for single stars. The weakest 12CO bands with respect to the spectral type are found in the pre-CV BPM 71214, although on a much smaller scale than observed in CVs. Furthermore there is no evidence for enhanced 13CO. Taking into account that our sample is subject to the present observational bias that favours the discovery of young pre-CVs with secondary stars of late spectral types, we can conclude the following: 1) our study provides observational proof that the CO anomalies discovered in certain CVs are not due to any material acquired during the common envelope phase, and 2) if the CO anomalies in certain CVs are not due to accretion of processed material during nova outburst, then the progenitors of these CVs are of a significantly different type than the currently known sample of pre-CVs., Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures, A&A, accepted

We have conducted an extensive wide-field imaging survey for Cepheid variables in the Local Group irregular galaxy WLM. From data obtained on 101 nights, we have discovered 60 Cepheids which include 14 of the 15 Cepheid variables previously detected by Sandage and Carlson. Down to a period of 3 days, our Cepheid survey in WLM should be practically complete. Importantly, we have found for the first time a long-period Cepheid (P=54.2 days) in this galaxy, alleviating the puzzle that WLM with its many blue, massive stars does not contain Cepheids with periods longer than about 10 days. Our data define tight period-luminosity relations in V, I and the reddening-free Wesenheit magnitude ${\rm W}_{\rm I}$ which are all extremely well fit by the corresponding slopes of the LMC Cepheid PL relation, suggesting no change of the PL relation slope down to a Cepheid metal abundance of about -1.0 dex, in agreement with other recent studies. We derive a true distance modulus to WLM of 25.144 $\pm$0.03 (r) $\pm$0.07 (s) mag from our data, in good agreement with the earlier 24.92 $\pm$ 0.21 mag determination of Lee, Freedman and Madore (1993a) from Cepheid variables. The quoted value of the systematic uncertainty does not include the contribution from the LMC distance which we have assumed to be 18.50 mag, as in the previous papers in our project., Comment: AJ accepted

We have detected, for the first time, Cepheid variables in the Sculptor Group SB(s)m galaxy NGC 55. From wide-field images obtained in the optical V and I bands during 77 nights in 2002-2003, we have found 143 Cepheids with periods ranging from 5.6 to 175.9 days. 133 of these objects have periods longer than 10 days, making NGC 55 to-date the galaxy with the largest known number of long-period Cepheids in the Sculptor Group. We construct period-luminosity relations from our data and obtain distance moduli corrected for the small foreground reddening to NGC 55 of 26.79 $\pm$ 0.04 mag (internal error) in V, 26.66 $\pm$ 0.03 mag in I and 26.40 $\pm$ 0.05 mag in the reddening-independent V-I Wesenheit index. The trend of increasing distance moduli with shorter wavelength hints at the existence of significant reddening intrinsic to NGC 55 which affects the measured Cepheid magnitudes. From our data, we determine the intrinsic mean reddening of the Cepheids in NGC 55 as E(B-V) = 0.102 mag which brings the distance determinations from the different bands into excellent agreement. Our best distance estimate for NGC 55 from the present optical Cepheid photometry is 26.40 mag $\pm$ 0.05 mag (internal error) $\pm$ 0.09 mag (systematic error). This value is tied to an assumed LMC distance of 18.50 mag. Our quoted systematic error of the present NGC 55 Cepheid distance does not take into account the current uncertainty on the distance of the fiducial LMC galaxy itself. Within the small respective uncertainties, the Sculptor Group galaxies NGC 55 and NGC 300 are at the same distance of 1.9 Mpc, strengthening the case for a physical association of these galaxies, Comment: Astronomical Journal in press (December issue)

We have obtained the spectrum of a middle-aged PSR B0656+14 in the 4300-9000 AA range with the ESO/VLT/FORS2. Preliminary results show that at 4600-7000 AA the spectrum is almost featureless and flat with a spectral index $\alpha_nu ~ -0.2 that undergoes a change to a positive value at longer wavelengths. Combining with available multiwavelength data suggests two wide, red and blue, flux depressions whose frequency ratio is about 2 and which could be the 1st and 2nd harmonics of electron/positron cyclotron absorption formed at magnetic fields ~10^8G in upper magnetosphere of the pulsar., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, To appear in Astrophysics and Space Science, Proceedings of "Isolated Neutron Stars: from the Interior to the Surface", eds. We have obtained mosaic images of NGC 3109 in the V and I bands on 74 nights, spanning approximately one year. From these data, we have conducted an extensive search for Cepheid variables over the entire field of the galaxy, resulting in the discovery of 113 variables with periods ranging from 3.4 to 31.4 days. In this sample, 76 Cepheids, including many long-period variables, were not known before. For the previously known 45 Cepheids in this galaxy, our data proved that reported periods were wrong for 14 objects; for nearly all other previously known Cepheid variables we were able to significantly improve on the periods. We construct period-luminosity relations from our data and obtain reddening-corrected distance moduli of 25.72 $\pm$ 0.05 mag in V, and 25.66 $\pm$ 0.04 mag in I. The distance modulus derived form the reddening-independent V-I Wesenheit index turns out to be significantly shorter (25.54 $\pm$ 0.05 mag), which indicates that in addition to the foreground extinction of E(B-V) = 0.05 mag, there is an intrinsic to NGC 3109 redening of about 0.05 mag. Our distance obtained based on the reddening-free Wesenheit magnitudes is consistent with earlier distance determinations of NGC 3109 from Cepheids, and the tip of the red giant branch. We have performed a search for variable stars in the dwarf irregular galaxy NGC 6822 using wide-field multi-epoch VI photometry down to a limiting magnitude $V$ $\sim$ 22. Apart from the Cepheid variables in this galaxy already reported in an earlier paper by Pietrzynski et al. (2004), we have found 1019 "non-periodic" variable stars, 50 periodically variable stars with periods ranging from 0.12 to 66 days and 146 probably periodic variables. Twelve of these stars are eclipsing binaries and fifteen are likely new, low-amplitude Cepheids. Interestingly, seven of these Cepheid candidates have periods longer than 100 days, have very low amplitudes (less than 0.2 mag in $I$), and are very red. They could be young, massive Cepheids still embedded in dusty envelopes. The other objects span a huge range in colours and represent a mixture of different types of luminous variables. Many of the variables classified as non-periodic in the present study may turn out to be {\it periodic} variables once a much longer time baseline will be available to study them. We provide the catalogue of photometric parameters and show the atlas of light curves for the new variable stars. Our present catalogue is complementary to the one of Baldacci et al. We present preliminary results on spectroscopic data of the candidate pre-cataclysmic variable LTT 560. A fit to the flux-calibrated spectrum reveals the temperature of the white-dwarf primary to be T_eff = 7000 - 7500 K, and confirms the result of previous studies on the detection of an M5V secondary star. We report optical photometric observations of four superoutbursts of the short-period dwarf nova TV Crv. This object experiences two types of superoutbursts; one with a precursor and the other without. The superhump period and period excess of TV Crv are accurately determined to be 0.065028 +/- 0.000008 d and 0.0342 +/- 0.0021, respectively. This large excess implies a relatively large mass ratio of the binary components (M_2/M_1), though it has a short orbital period. The two types of superoutbursts can be explained by the thermal-tidal instability model for systems having large mass ratios. Our observations reveal that superhump period derivatives are variable in distinct superoutbursts. The variation is apparently related to the presence or absence of a precursor. We propose that the superhump period derivative depends on the maximum disk radius during outbursts. We investigate the relationship of the type of superoutbursts and the superhump period derivative for known sources. In the case of superoutbursts without a precursor, superhump period derivatives tend to be larger than those in precursor-main type superoutbursts, which is consistent with our scenario., Comment: 13 pages, 11 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

In the course of a long-term project investigating classical novae with large outburst amplitudes, we have performed optical spectroscopy of several old-nova candidates. We here present the spectra of the candidates V630 Sgr, XX Tau, CQ Vel, V842 Cen, and V529 Ori, that hitherto lacked such classification. While the first four show typical spectra for cataclysmic variables, and can thus be identified as such, V529 Ori is probably misclassified. Of special interest are the two systems XX Tau and V842 Cen, which show all signs for being low mass transfer systems. As such they can be used to judge the evolution scenarios for novae. In particular, given the rather young age of their outburst, it appears more likely that these systems are not on their way into hibernation, (i.e., cutting off mass transfer for a longer period of time), but are simply settling down towards their original configuration of comparatively low, but steady, mass transfer, such as for dwarf novae., Comment: 7 pages, 6 figures, to be published in A&A

We have taken near-infrared (JHK) spectroscopic data of a sample of pre-CVs, in order to examine them for signatures of nuclear evolution. We have examined VTL/ISAAC 1-2.5 $\umu$m spectroscopy of a sample of short orbital period cataclysmic variables which are candidates for harboring substellar companions. We provide descriptions of the infrared spectrum of \hbox{EI Psc}, \hbox{V834 Cen}, \hbox{WX Cet}, \hbox{VW Hyi}, \hbox{TY PsA} and \hbox{BW Scl}. Fitting of the IR spectral energy distribution (SED) was performed by comparing the observed spectrum with late-type templates. Absorption features of the secondary star were detected in \hbox{EI Psc} and \hbox{V834 Cen}, consistent with dwarf secondaries of spectral type K 5 $\pm$ 1 and M 8 $\pm$ 0.5, respectively. In addition, we report the first detection of the secondary star in \hbox{VW Hyi}. The SED in this case is well matched by an L 0 $\pm$ 2 type secondary contributing 23 per cent to the overall flux at $\lambda$ = 1.15 $\umu$m. This is a surprising result for a system with a relatively high mass transfer rate. We present optical spectroscopy and multi colour photometry of the old nova V840 Oph. We rediscovered the nova based on its position in the colour--colour diagrams. It stands out as a very blue object with an additional red component. We present the first optical spectroscopy of this candidate and confirm its nova character. Furthermore, V840\,Oph has been found as one of very few cataclysmic variables showing C IV emission at lambda = 580/1 nm. From the analysis of the carbon lines it seems probable that V840 Oph contains actually a carbon-rich secondary star. So far, only the nova-like QU Car has been known to have such a companion. We furthermore find spectroscopic evidence that V840 Oph has a hot, dense accretion disc or stream and is probably a magnetic system., Comment: 7 pages, 6 figures, accepted by A&A

We present H-alpha line-profile analyses for the seven SU UMa type dwarf novae AK Cnc, WX Cet, AQ Eri, VW Hyi, RZ Leo, TU Men, and HS Vir. All data sets are treated in the same manner, applying a sequence of techniques for each system. The basic ingredients of this sequence are the diagnostic diagram to determine the zero point of the orbital phase, and Doppler tomography to visualise the emission distribution. We furthermore introduce a new qualitative way of to evaluate the Doppler fit, by comparing the line profile of the reconstructed with the original spectrum in the form of the V/R plot. We present the results of the analysis in the compact form of an atlas, allowing a direct comparison of the emission distribution in our targets. Although most of the data sets were not taken with the intention of a line-profile analysis, we obtain significant results and are able to indicate the type of the additional emission in these systems. Our objects should have in principle very similar physical properties, i.e. they cover only a small range in orbital periods, mass ratios, and mass-transfer rates. Nevertheless, we find a large variety of phenomena both with respect to the individual systems and also within individual data sets of the same object. This includes `canonical' additional emission components from the secondary star and the bright spot, but also emission from the leading side of the accretion disc., Comment: 20 pages, 25 figures, accepted for publication in A&A, figures have been diminished in size and quality

We have observed several magnetic cataclysmic variables located in the range between 2 and 3 hours, known as the period gap. This work was prompted by the recent discovery of RX J1554.2+2721. It has 2.54 hours orbital period and shows almost pure cyclotron continuum in a low luminosity state, similar to HS1023+3900, HS0922+1333 and RBS206. These are low accretion rate polars (LARPs) known to have mass transfer rates of order of a few 10^-13Msun/year. The aim of the study was to find out, if magnetic systems filling the period gap are in any way different from their counterparts outside that range of periods. We report the discovery, based on an inspection of the OGLE-II database, of a group of blue variables in the Magellanic Clouds showing simultaneously two kinds of photometric variability: a short-term cyclic variability with typical amplitude $\Delta I \sim$ 0.05 mag and period $P_{1}$ between 4 and 16 days and a sinusoidal, long-term cyclic oscillation with much larger amplitude $\Delta I \sim$ 0.2 mag with period $P_{2}$ in the range of 150-1000 days. We find that both periods seems to be coupled through the relationship $P_{2}$ = 35.2 $\pm$ 0.8 $P_{1}$. In general, the short term variability is reminiscent of those shown by Algol-type binaries. We propose that the long-term oscillation could arise in the precession of a elliptical disc fed by a Roche-lobe filling companion in a low mass ratio Algol system., Comment: submitted to A&A letters

The recent discovery, based on a search of public OGLE data, of Be star candidates in the Small Magellanic Cloud showing spectacular photometric variations (Mennickent et al. 2002), has motivated further analysis of their light curves. Here we report the results of a statistical study of the light curves of Type-1, Type-2 and Type-3 stars. Type-3 stars show a bimodal period distribution, with a main, broad peak, between 20 and 130 days, and a narrower, secondary peak, between 140 and 210 days. We also find that, among Type-3 stars, the maximum amplitude of oscillation correlates with the system luminosity, in the sense that only low luminosity systems show large amplitude oscillations. In general, the amplitude of these oscillations tends to increase with the photometric period. We present a spectroscopic study of the long-recurrence-time dwarf nova V592 Herculis based on observations obtained during its August 1998 superoutburst. From the analysis of the radial velocities of the Halpha emission line we find a most likely orbital period of 85.5 +- 0.4 minutes, but the 91.2 +- 0.6 minutes alias cannot be completely discarded. We present VTL/ISAAC infrared spectroscopy of a sample of short orbital period cataclysmic variables which are candidates for harboring substellar companions. We have detected the KI and NaI absorption lines of the companion star in VY Aqr. The overall spectral distribution in this system is best fit with a M9.5 type dwarf spectra, implying a distance of $100 \pm 10$ pc. VY Aqr seems to fall far from the theoretical distribution of secondary star temperatures around the orbital period minimum. Fitting of the IR spectral energy distribution (SED) was performed by comparing the observed spectrum with late-type templates. The application of such a spectral fitting procedure suggests that the continuum shape in the 1.1-2.5 $\mu$m spectral region in short orbital period cataclysmic variables may be an useful indicator of the companion spectral type. The SED fitting for RZ Leo and CU Vel suggests M5 type dwarf companions, and distances of 340 $\pm$ 110 and 150 $\pm$ 50 pc, respectively. Recently the OGLE experiment has provided accurate light curves and colours for about 2 millions stars in the Small Magellanic Cloud. We have examined this database for its content of Be stars, applying some selection criteria, and we have found a sample of $\sim$ 1000 candidates. Some of these stars show beautiful light curves with amazing variations never observed in any Galactic variable. We find outbursts in 13% of the sample (Type-1 stars), high and low states in 15%, periodic variations in 7%, and the usual variations seen in Galactic Be stars in 65% of the cases. The Galactic counterparts of Type-1 objects could be the outbursting Be stars found by Hubert & Floquet (1998) after the analysis of Hipparcos photometry. We discuss the possibility that Type-1 stars could correspond to Be stars with accreting white dwarf companions or alternatively, blue pre-main sequence stars surrounded by thermally unstable accretion disks. We present V and Rc band photometry and optical near-infrared spectroscopy of the cataclysmic variable 1RXS J094432.1+035738. We detected features of a cool secondary star, which can be modeled with a red dwarf of spectral type M2 (+0.5 -1.0) V at a distance of 433 +- 100 pc., Comment: Accepted for publication in Astronomy and Astrophysics

We present high resolution time-resolved optical spectra of the high inclination short orbital period dwarf nova V893 Sco. We performed spectral analysis through radial velocity measurements, Doppler mapping, and ratioed Doppler maps. Our results indicate that V893 Sco's accretion disk is dissimilar to WZ Sge's accretion disk, and does not fit any of the current accretion disk models. We derive the system parameters M1 and i, and present evidence for V893 Sco as a very young cataclysmic variable and an ER UMa star. We find that the ROSAT source 1RXS J105010.3-140431 is a cataclysmic variable with orbital period of 88.6 minutes and a spectrum closely resembling WZ Sge. In particular, emission lines are flanked by Stark-broadened absorption wings probably originating in the photosphere of a compact object. The Balmer absorption lines can be modeled by the spectrum of a DA white dwarf with 13 000 $< T_{eff} <$ 24 000 K. The strong absorption lines allowed us to obtain direct radial velocities of the white dwarf using the cross-correlation technique. We find an extremely low white dwarf radial velocity half amplitude, $K_{wd}$ = 4 $\pm$ 1 km s$^{-1}$. This is consistent with the upper limit obtained from the H$\alpha$ emission line wing K < 20 km s$^{-1}$. The corresponding mass function is incompatible with a main sequence secondary, but is compatible with a post orbital period minimum cataclysmic variable with a brown dwarf-like secondary. The formal solution gives a secondary mass of 10-20 jovian masses. Doppler maps for the emission lines and the hypothesis of black-body emission indicate a steady state (T $\sim r^{-3/4}$) accretion disk mainly emitting in H$\alpha$ and an optically thicker hotspot with a strong contribution to the higher order Balmer lines and \ion{He}{I} 5875. As in other long cycle length dwarf novae, evidence for inner disk removal is found from the analysis of the emission lines., Comment: 14 figures, 2 of them composed. Total 20 figures. We report on the results of medium-resolution spectroscopy of GRS 1915+105 in the near-infrared H and K band using the 8m VLT at ESO. We clearly identify absorption bandheads from 12CO and 13CO. Together with other features this results in a classification of the mass-donating star in this binary as a K-M III star, clearly indicating that GRS 1915+105 belongs to the class of low-mass X-ray binaries (LMXB)., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, to appear as A&A Lett

In this research note we present a time-resolved study of the Balmer emission lines of RZ Leo. From the analysis of the radial velocities we find an orbital period of 0.07651(26) d. This is in excellent agreement with the photometrically determined periods in quiescence and during the early stages of superoutburst. We report on a first application of the infrared surface brightness technique on a Cepheid in the Large Magellanic Cloud, the variable HV 12198 in the young globular cluster NGC 1866. From this one star, we determine a distance modulus of 18.42 +- 0.10 (random and systematic uncertainty) to the cluster. When the results on further member Cepheids in NGC 1866 become available, we expect to derive the distance to the LMC with a +- 3-4 percent accuracy, including systematic errors, from this technique., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, accepted in ApJ Letters

We present results of differential photometry of the dwarf nova RZ Leonis spanning a 11-year baseline. The most striking feature of the light curve is a non-coherent periodic hump of variable amplitude. A seasonal time series analysis yields a photometric period of 0.0756(12) d. In addition, low amplitude fluctuations of the mean magnitude in time scale of months are observed. We find that the hump's amplitude is anti-correlated with the star's mean magnitude and becomes "negative" (i.e. an absorption feature or "anti-hump") when the system is very faint. Secondary humps and "anti-humps" are also observed. The transition from "anti-humps" to fully developed humps occurs on a time scale of 70 days. We interprete the observations as a rapid response of the accretion disk to the increase of mass transfer rate. In this case we deduce a viscosity parameter alpha ~ 0.08, i.e. much larger than often claimed for WZ Sge-like stars. We note that the secondary star in RZ Leo is close to a main-sequence red dwarf and not a brown-dwarf like star as suggested for other long cycle-length SU UMa stars like WZ Sge and V592 Her.
