Aims. We study the connection between spatially resolved star formation and young star clusters across the disc of M51. Methods. We combine star cluster data based on B, V, and I-band Hubble Space Telescope ACS imaging, together with new WFPC2 U-band photometry to derive ages, masses, and extinctions of 1580 resolved star clusters using SSP models. This data is combined with data on the spatially resolved star formation rates and gas surface densities, as well as Halpha and 20cm radio-continuum (RC) emission, which allows us to study the spatial correlations between star formation and star clusters. Two-point autocorrelation functions are used to study the clustering of star clusters as a function of spatial scale and age. Results. We find that the clustering of star clusters among themselves decreases both with spatial scale and age, consistent with hierarchical star formation. The slope of the autocorrelation functions are consistent with projected fractal dimensions in the range of 1.2-1.6, which is similar to other galaxies, therefore suggesting that the fractal dimension of hierarchical star formation is universal. Both star and cluster formation peak at a galactocentric radius of 2.5 and 5 kpc, which we tentatively attribute to the presence of the 4:1 resonance and the co-rotation radius. The positions of the youngest (<10 Myr) star clusters show the strongest correlation with the spiral arms, Halpha, and the RC emission, and these correlations decrease with age. The azimuthal distribution of clusters in terms of kinematic age away from the spiral arms indicates that the majority of the clusters formed 5-20 Myr before their parental gas cloud reached the centre of the spiral arm., Comment: 14 pages, 21 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

The initial cluster mass function (ICMF) in spiral galaxy discs is constrained and compared with data for old globular clusters and young clusters in starbursts. It is found that the observed ages and luminosities of the brightest clusters in spiral discs can be reproduced if the ICMF is a Schechter function with a cut-off mass (Mc) of a few times 10^5 Msun and disruption of optically visible clusters is dominated by relatively slow secular evolution. A direct Schechter function fit to the combined cluster MF for all spirals in the sample studied here yields Mc = (2.1+/-0.4)x10^5 Msun. The MFs in cluster-poor and cluster-rich spirals are statistically indistinguishable. An Mc=2.1x10^5 Msun Schechter function also fits the MF of young clusters in the Large Magellanic Cloud. If the same ICMF applies in the Milky Way, a bound cluster with M>10^5 Msun will form about once every 10 Myr, while an M>10^6 Msun cluster will form only once every 50 Gyr. Luminosity functions (LFs) of model cluster populations drawn from an Mc=2.1x10^5 Msun Schechter ICMF generally agree with LFs observed in spiral galaxies. It is thus concluded that the ICMF in present-day spiral discs can be modelled as a Schechter function with Mc = 200,000 Msun. However, the presence of significant numbers of M>10^6 Msun (and even M>10^7 Msun) clusters in some starburst galaxies makes it unlikely that the Mc value derived for spirals is universal. In high-pressure environments, such as those created by complex gas kinematics and feedback in mergers, Mc can shift to higher masses than in quiescent discs., Comment: 14 pages, 8 figures. CONTEXT: Extragalactic globular clusters have been studied in elliptical galaxies and in a few luminous spiral galaxies, but little is known about globular clusters in low-luminosity spirals. AIMS: Past observations with the ACS have shown that NGC 45 hosts a large population of globular clusters (19), as well as several young star clusters. In this work we aim to confirm the bona fide globular cluster status for 8 of 19 globular cluster candidates and to derive metallicities, ages, and velocities. METHODS: VLT/FORS2 multislit spectroscopy in combination with the Lick/IDS system was used to derive velocities and to constrain metallicities and [alpha/Fe] element ratio of the globular clusters. RESULTS: We confirm the 8 globular clusters as bona fide globular clusters. Their velocities indicate halo or bulge-like kinematics, with little or no overall rotation. From absorption indices such as H_beta, H_gamma, and H_delta and the combined [MgFe]' index, we found that the globular clusters are metal-poor [Z/H]<=-0.33 dex and [alpha/Fe]<=0.0 element ratio. Whether or not there exists a physical upper mass limit for star clusters is still unclear. HST/ACS data for the rich cluster population in the interacting galaxy M51 enables us to investigate this in more detail. We investigate whether the cluster luminosity function (LF) in M51 shows evidence for an upper limit to the mass function. The variations of the LF parameters with position on the disk are addressed. We determine the cluster LF for all clusters in M51 falling within our selection criteria, as well as for several subsets of the sample. In that way we can determine the properties of the cluster population as a function of galactocentric distance and background intensity. By comparing observed and simulated LFs we can constrain the underlying cluster initial mass function and/or cluster disruption parameters. A physical upper mass limit for star clusters will appear as a bend dividing two power law parts in the LF, if the cluster sample is large enough to sample the full range of cluster masses. The location of the bend in the LF is indicative of the value of the upper mass limit. The slopes of the power laws are an interplay between upper masses, disruption and fading. The LF of the cluster population of M51 is better described by a double power law than by a single power law. We show that the cluster initial mass function is likely to be truncated at the high mass end. We conclude from the variation of the LF parameters with galactocentric distance that both the upper mass limit and the cluster disruption parameters are likely to be a function of position in the galactic disk. CONTEXT: Until now, only one planetary nebula (PN) has been known in the Fornax dwarf spheroidal galaxy. AIMS: The discovery of a second PN candidate, associated with one of the 5 globular clusters in the Fornax dwarf, is reported. METHODS: Spectra of the globular cluster H5, obtained with the UVES echelle spectrograph on the ESO Very Large Telescope, show [O III] line emission at a radial velocity consistent with membership of the Fornax dwarf. A possible counterpart of the [O III] emission is identified in archival images from the Wide Field Planetary Camera 2 on board the Hubble Space Telescope. The source of the emission is located about 1.5" (less than one core radius) southwest of the centre of the cluster. RESULTS: The emission line source is identified as a likely PN, albeit with several peculiar properties. No Hbeta, He I, or He II line emission is detected and the [O III]/Hbeta ratio is >25 (2 sigma). The expansion velocity inferred from the [O III] 5007 AA line is about 55 km/s, which is large for a PN. The diameter measured on the HST images is about 0.23" or 0.15 pc at the distance of the Fornax dSph. CONCLUSIONS: This object doubles the number of known PNe in Fornax, and is only the 5th PN associated with an old GC for which direct imaging is available. Aims: We study a peculiar object with a projected position close to the nucleus of M51. It is unusually large for a star cluster in M51 and we therefore investigate the three most likely options to explain this object: (a) a background galaxy, (b) a cluster in the disk of M51 and (c) a cluster in M51, but in front of the disk. Methods: We use HST/ACS and HST/NICMOS broad-band photometry to study the properties of this object. Assuming the object is a star cluster, we fit the metallicity, age, mass and extinction using simple stellar population models. Assuming the object is a background galaxy, we estimate the extinction from the colour of the background around the object. We study the structural parameters of the object by fitting the spatial profile with analytical models. Results: We find de-reddened colours of the object which are bluer than expected for a typical elliptical galaxy, and the central surface brightness is brighter than the typical surface brightness of a disc galaxy. It is therefore not likely that the object is a background galaxy. Assuming the object is a star cluster in the disc of M51, we estimate an age and mass of 0.7 Gyr and 2.2 x 10^5 \msun, respectively (with the extinction fixed to E(B-V) = 0.2). Considering the large size of the object, we argue that in this scenario we observe the cluster just prior to final dissolution. If we fit for the extinction as a free parameter, a younger age is allowed and the object is not close to final dissolution. Alternatively, the object could be a star cluster in M51, but in front of the disc, with an age of 1.4 Gyr and mass M = 1.7 x 10^5 \msun. Its effective radius is between ~12-25 pc. We present new H-band echelle spectra, obtained with the NIRSPEC spectrograph at Keck II, for the massive star cluster "B" in the nearby dwarf irregular galaxy NGC 1569. From spectral synthesis and equivalent width measurements we obtain abundances and abundance patterns. We derive an Fe abundance of [Fe/H]=-0.63+/-0.08, a super-solar [alpha/Fe] abundance ratio of +0.31+/-0.09, and an O abundance of [O/H]=-0.29+/-0.07. We also measure a low 12C/13C = 5+/-1 isotopic ratio. Using archival imaging from the Advanced Camera for Surveys on board HST, we construct a colour-magnitude diagram (CMD) for the cluster in which we identify about 60 red supergiant (RSG) stars, consistent with the strong RSG features seen in the H-band spectrum. The mean effective temperature of these RSGs, derived from their observed colours and weighted by their estimated H-band luminosities, is 3790 K, in excellent agreement with our spectroscopic estimate of Teff = 3800+/-200 K. From the CMD we derive an age of 15-25 Myr, slightly older than previous estimates based on integrated broad-band colours. We derive a radial velocity of -78+/-3 km/s and a velocity dispersion of 9.6+/-0.3 km/s. In combination with an estimate of the half-light radius of 0.20"+/-0.05" from the HST data, this leads to a dynamical mass of (4.4+/-1.1)E5 Msun. The dynamical mass agrees very well with the mass predicted by simple stellar population models for a cluster of this age and luminosity, assuming a normal stellar IMF. The cluster core radius appears smaller at longer wavelengths, as has previously been found in other extragalactic young star clusters., Comment: 14 pages, incl. 12 figures and 4 tables. We present observations obtained with the Advanced Camera for Surveys on board the Hubble Space Telescope of the "fossil" starburst region B in the nearby starburst galaxy M82. By comparing UBVI photometry with models, we derive ages and extinctions for 35 U-band selected star clusters. We find that the peak epoch of cluster formation occurred ~ 150 Myr ago, in contrast to earlier work that found a peak formation age of 1.1 Gyr. The difference is most likely due to our inclusion of U-band data, which are essential for accurate age determinations of young cluster populations. We further show that the previously reported turnover in the cluster luminosity function is probably due to the neglect of the effect of extended sources on the detection limit. The much younger cluster ages we derive clarifies the evolution of the M82 starburst. The M82-B age distribution now overlaps with the ages of: the nuclear starburst; clusters formed on the opposite side of the disk; and the last encounter with M81, some 220 Myr ago., Comment: 11 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ Letters

With HST, colour-magnitude diagrams (CMDs) can be obtained for young star clusters well beyond the Local Group. Such data can help constrain cluster ages and metallicities, and also provide a reference against which intermediate- and high mass stellar models can be compared. Here, CMDs are presented for two massive (>10^5 Msun) clusters and compared with Padua and Geneva isochrones. We use HST/ACS observations of the spiral galaxy M51 in F435W, F555W and F814W to select a large sample of star clusters with accurate effective radius measurements in an area covering the complete disc of M51. We present the dataset and study the radius distribution and relations between radius, colour, arm/interarm region, galactocentric distance, mass and age. We select a sample of 7698 (F435W), 6846 (F555W) and 5024 (F814W) slightly resolved clusters and derive their effective radii by fitting the spatial profiles with analytical models convolved with the point spread function. The radii of 1284 clusters are studied in detail. We find cluster radii between 0.5 and ~10 pc, and one exceptionally large cluster candidate with a radius of 21.6 pc. The median radius is 2.1 pc. We find 70 clusters in our sample which have colours consistent with being old GC candidates and we find 6 new "faint fuzzy" clusters in, or projected onto, the disc of M51. The radius distribution can not be fitted with a power law, but a log-normal distribution provides a reasonable fit to the data. This indicates that shortly after the formation of the clusters from a fractal gas, their radii have changed in a non-uniform way. We find an increase in radius with colour as well as a higher fraction of redder clusters in the interarm regions, suggesting that clusters in spiral arms are more compact. We find a correlation between radius and galactocentric distance which is considerably weaker than the observed correlation for old Milky Way GCs. We find weak relations between cluster luminosity and radius, but we do not observe a correlation between cluster mass and radius., Comment: 17 pages, 23 figures. Accepted for publication in A&A

We present radial stellar population parameters for a subsample of 12 galaxies from the 36 isolated early-type galaxies of Reda et al. Using new long-slit spectra, central values and radial gradients for the stellar age, metallicity [Z/H] and alpha-element abundance [E/Fe] are measured. Similarly, the central stellar population parameters are derived for a further 5 isolated early-type galaxies using their Lick indices from the literature. On average, the seventeen isolated galaxies have mean central [Z/H]o and [E/Fe]o of 0.29+/-0.03 and 0.17+/-0.03 respectively and span a wide range of ages from 1.7 to 15 Gyrs. We find that isolated galaxies follow similar scaling relations between central stellar population parameters and galaxy velocity dispersion to their counterparts in high density environments. However, we note a tendency for isolated galaxies to have slightly younger ages, higher [Z/H] and lower [E/Fe]. Such properties are qualitatively consistent with the expectation of an extended star formation history for galaxies in lower density environments. Generally we measure constant age and [E/Fe] radial gradients. We find that the age gradients anti-correlate with the central galaxy age. Metallicity gradients range from near zero to strongly negative. For our high mass galaxies metallicity gradients are shallower with increasing mass. Such behaviour is not predicted in dissipational collapse models but might be expected in multiple mergers. The metallicity gradients correlate with the central age and metallicity, as well as to the age gradients. In conclusion, our stellar population data for isolated galaxies are more compatible with an extended merger/accretion history than early dissipative collapse., Comment: The paper contains 8 figures and 5 tables. We present first results from an HST/ACS imaging survey of stars and star clusters in five nearby spiral galaxies. This contribution concentrates on NGC 1313, a highly distorted late-type barred spiral. We compare the field star and cluster formation histories in our three ACS pointings for this galaxy. We present results from ACS and WFPC observations in the low luminosity galaxy NGC 45. We identified 28 young star cluster candidates. While the exact values of age, mass, and extinction depend somewhat on the choice of SSP models, we find no young clusters with masses higher than a few 1000 Msun for any model choice. We derive the luminosity function of young star clusters and find a slope of alpha=-1.94+-0.28. We also identified 19 old globular clusters and we estimate a specific frequency of globular clusters of S_N=1.4-1.9 which is significantly higher than observed for other late-type galaxies (e.g. SMC, LMC, M33). Most of these globular clusters appear to belong to a metal-poor population, although they coincide spatially with the location of the bulge of NGC 45., Comment: 16 pages,18 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

Current observational constraints on the dynamical evolution of star clusters are reviewed. Theory and observations now agree nicely on the mass dependency and time scales for disruption of young star clusters in galactic disks, but many problems still await resolution. The origin of the mass function of old globular clusters, and its (near) invariance with respect to host galaxy properties and location within the host galaxy remain prominent puzzles. Most current models fail to reproduce the globular cluster mass function as a result of dynamical evolution from an initial power-law, except under very specific conditions which are not generally consistent with observations. How well do we actually know the proper initial conditions? The cluster initial mass function (CIMF) seems to be consistent with a power-law with exponent alpha~ -2 in most present-day star forming galaxies, but the limits of the mass range over which this approximation is valid remain poorly constrained both observationally and theoretically. Furthermore, there are hints that some dwarf galaxies may have CIMFs which deviate from a power-law., Comment: 14 pages, 4 figures. We study the luminosity function (LF) of the star clusters in M51. During an analysis of optical spectra of 80 young star clusters in several nearby spiral galaxies, [O III] and [N II] emission lines were noted in some cases. Three of these emission line sources are identified as likely planetary nebula (PN) candidates and may represent a rare opportunity to study PNe whose progenitor stars are known to be of intermediate masses. This paper presents and discusses basic properties of the PN candidates and their host clusters. Based on the observed emission line fluxes, the excitation parameters and luminosities of the nebulae are derived. This allows a crude placement of the central stars in two of the objects on the H-R diagram, and their temperatures and luminosities are found to be consistent with post-AGB model tracks for a central star mass of about 0.60 Msun. Host cluster ages and masses are estimated from broad-band colours and by comparison with model SSP spectra. One of the host clusters has an age of 32-65 Myrs, corresponding to a main sequence turn-off mass of M(TO) = 6.6-9.0 Msun. For the other cluster the age is 282-407 Myrs, corresponding to M(TO) = 3.2-3.6 Msun. By estimating the number of stars evolving off the main sequence per year, a total of 6 PNe are expected in our full sample of 80 clusters for aPN lifetime of 10000 years. The factor of two disagreement with the actual observed number may be due, among other things, to uncertainties in PN lifetimes. It is interesting to note that all three PN candidates are associated with clusters which are more diffuse than average. While PNe have previously been found in some old globular clusters, the candidates identified here are among the first identified in young star clusters., Comment: 10 pages, 9 figures. Globular clusters are often assumed to be good tracers of major star formation episodes in their host galaxies. While observations over the past 2 decades have confirmed the presence of young objects with globular cluster-like properties in many galaxies, it is still not well understood exactly how the formation efficiency of bound star clusters relative to field stars and their mass spectrum depend on external factors. The cluster initial mass function typically appears to be consistent with a power-law with a slope of about -2, but most attempts to constrain any upper limit on the CIMF have been limited by size-of-sample effects. However, evidence is starting to accumulate for possible truncation of the cluster mass function. It is tentatively suggested that the upper mass limit may currently be at about 10^5 Msun in the Milky Way disk, while there are indications that it is about 5x10^5 Msun in M51 and about 2x10^6 Msun in the Antennae. Some extreme starbursts (e.g. Arp 220, NGC 7252) are (or were) able to form clusters as massive as 10^7 Msun. The overall formation efficiency of star clusters (relative to field stars) in the Galactic bulge may not have been much different from that in the disk today, but was probably significantly higher for metal-poor GCs in halos., Comment: 8 pages. A detailed imaging analysis of the globular cluster (GC) system of the Sombrero galaxy (NGC 4594) has been accomplished using a six-image mosaic from the Hubble Space Telescope Advanced Camera for Surveys. The quality of the data is such that contamination by foreground stars and background galaxies is negligible for all but the faintest 5% of the GC luminosity function (GCLF). This enables the study of an effectively pure sample of 659 GCs until ~2 mags fainter than the turnover magnitude, which occurs at M_V=-7.60+/-0.06 for an assumed m-M=29.77. Two GC metallicity subpopulations are easily distinguishable, with the metal-poor subpopulation exhibiting a smaller intrinsic dispersion in color compared to the metal-rich subpopulation. Three new discoveries include: (1) A metal-poor GC color-magnitude trend. (2) Confirmation that the metal-rich GCs are ~17% smaller than the metal-poor ones for small projected galactocentric radii (less than ~2 arcmin). However, the median half-light radii of the two subpopulations become identical at ~3 arcmin from the center. This is most easily explained if the size difference is the result of projection effects. (3) The brightest (M_V < -9.0) members of the GC system show a size-magnitude upturn where the average GC size increases with increasing luminosity. Evidence is presented that supports an intrinsic origin for this feature rather than a being result from accreted dwarf elliptical nuclei. In addition, the metal-rich GCs show a shallower positive size-magnitude trend, similar to what is found in previous studies of young star clusters., Comment: 18 pages, including 23 figures and 4 tables. We exploit the superb resolution of the new HST/ACS mosaic image of M51 to select a large sample of young (< 1 Gyr) star clusters in the spiral disk, based on their sizes. The image covers the entire spiral disk in B, V, I and H_alpha, at a resolution of 2 pc per pixel. The surface density distribution of 4357 resolved clusters shows that the clusters are more correlated with clouds than with stars, and we find a hint of enhanced cluster formation at the corotation radius. The radius distribution of a sample of 769 clusters with more accurate radii suggests that young star clusters have a preferred effective radius of ~3 pc, which is similar to the preferred radius of the much older GCs. However, in contrast to the GCs, the young clusters in M51 do not show a relation between radius and galactocentric distance. When an universal untruncated star cluster initial mass function (CIMF) described by a power-law distribution is assumed, the mass of the most massive star cluster in a galaxy (M_max) is the result of the size-of-sample (SoS) effect. This implies a dependence of M_max on the total number of star clusters (N). The SoS effect also implies that M_max within a cluster population increases with equal logarithmic intervals of age. This is because the number of clusters formed in logarithmic age intervals increases (assuming a constant cluster formation rate). This effect has been observed in the SMC and LMC. Based on the maximum pressure (P_int) inside molecular clouds, it has been suggested that a physical maximum mass (M_max[phys]) should exist. The theory predicts that M_max[phys] should be observable, i.e. lower than M_max that follows from statistical arguments, in big galaxies with a high star formation rate. We compare the SoS relations in the SMC and LMC with the ones in M51 and model the integrated cluster luminosity function (CLF) for two cases: 1) M_max is determined by the SoS effect and 2) M_max=M_max[phys]=constant. The observed CLF of M51 and the comparison of the SoS relations with the SMC and LMC both suggest that there exists a M_max[phys] of 5*10^5 M_sun in M51. The CLF of M51 looks very similar to the one observed in the ``Antennae'' galaxies. We present the first dynamical study of the globular cluster system of NGC 4636. This giant elliptical galaxy is claimed to be extremely dark matter dominated, according to X-ray observations. Using the VLT with FORS2/MXU, we obtained velocities for 174 globular clusters. The clusters have projected galactocentric distances in the range 4 to 70 kpc, the overwhelming majority lie within 30 kpc. We find some indication for a rotation of the red (metal-rich) clusters about the minor axis. Out to a radius of 30 kpc, we find a roughly constant projected velocity dispersion for the blue clusters of ~200 km/s. The red clusters exhibit a distinctly different behavior: at a radius of about 13 kpc, the velocity dispersion drops by ~50 km/s to about 170 km/s which then remains constant out to a radius of 30 kpc. Using only the blue clusters as dynamical tracers, we perform Jeans-analyses for different assumptions of the orbital anisotropy. Depending on the anisotropy and the adopted M/L-values, we find that the dark matter fraction within one effective radius can vary between 20% and 50% with most a probable range between 20% and 30%. A main source of uncertainty is the ambiguity of the velocity dispersion in the outermost bin. Although the dark halo mass still cannot be strongly constrained, NGC 4636 does not seem to be extremely dark matter dominated. Using the NIRSPEC spectrograph at Keck II, we have obtained H and K-band echelle spectra for a young (10-15 Myr), luminous (MV=-13.2) super-star cluster in the nearby spiral galaxy NGC 6946. From spectral synthesis and equivalent width measurements we obtain for the first time accurate abundances and abundance patterns in an extragalactic super-star cluster. We find [Fe/H]=-0.45+/-0.08 dex, an average alpha-enhancement of +0.22+/-0.1 dex, and a relatively low 12C/13C~ 8+/-2 isotopic ratio. We also measure a velocity dispersion of ~9.1 km/s, in agreement with previous estimates. We conclude that integrated high-dispersion spectroscopy of massive star clusters is a promising alternative to other methods for abundance analysis in extragalactic young stellar populations., Comment: 5 pages, incl. 2 figures. The Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS) enables low resolution slitless spectroscopic imaging in the three channels. The most-used modes are grism imaging with the WFC and the HRC at a resolution of 40 and 24 A/pixel, respectively. In the far UV there are two prisms for the SBC and a prism for the HRC in the near-UV. An overview of the slitless spectroscopic modes of the ACS is presented together with the advantages of slitless spectroscopy from space. The methods and strategies developed to establish and maintain the wavelength and flux calibration for the different channels are outlined. Since many slitless spectra are recorded on one deep exposure, pipeline science quality extraction of spectra is a necessity. To reduce ACS slitless data, the aXe spectral extraction software has been developed at the ST-ECF. aXe was designed to extract large numbers of ACS slitless spectra in an unsupervised way based on an input catalogue derived from a companion direct image. In order to handle dithered slitless spectra, drizzle, well-known in the imaging domain, has been applied. For ACS grism images, the aXedrizzle technique resamples 2D spectra from individual images to deep, rectified images before extracting the 1D spectra. aXe also provides tools for visual assessment of the extracted spectra and examples are presented., Comment: 10 pages, incl. 8 figures. The software package aXe provides comprehensive spectral extraction facilities for all the slitless modes of the ACS, covering the Wide Field Channel (WFC) grism, the High Resolution Channel (HRC) grism and prism and the Solar Blind Channel (SBC) prisms. The latest developments to the package apply to all ACS slitless modes leading to improved spectral extraction. Many thousands of spectra may be present on a single deep ACS WFC G800L image such that overlap of spectra is a significant nuisance. Two methods of estimating the contamination of any given spectrum by its near neighbours have been developed: one is based on the catalogue of objects on the direct image; another uses the flux information on multi-filter direct images. An improvement to the extracted spectra can also result from weighted extraction and the Horne optimal extraction algorithm has been implemented in aXe. A demonstrated improvement in signal-to-noise can be achieved. These new features are available in aXe-1.5 with the STSDAS 3.4 release., Comment: 6 pages, incl. 4 figures. The Advanced Camera for Surveys is equipped with three prisms in the Solar Blind (SBC) and High Resolution (HRC) Channels, which together cover the 1150 - 3500 A range, albeit at highly non-uniform spectral resolution. We present new wavelength- and flux calibrations of the SBC (PR110L and PR130L) and HRC (PR200L) prisms, based on calibration observations obtained in Cycle 13. The calibration products are available to users via the ST-ECF/aXe web pages, and can be used directly with the aXe package. We determined ages for 52 star clusters with masses < 10^6 solar masses in the low surface brightness spiral galaxy NGC 45. Four of these candidates are old globular clusters located in the bulge. The remaining ones span a large age range. The cluster ages suggest a continuous star/cluster formation history without evidence for bursts, consistent with the galaxy being located in a relatively unperturbed environment in the outskirts of the Sculptor group., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures. We present observations in a search for neutral hydrogen associated with the recently detected field dwarf galaxy APPLES1, performed with the Parkes radiotelescope. The observed radio spectrum shows no evident (> 3sigma rms) line emission indicating an upper limit for the HI content of the galaxy of ~ 10E6 solar masses and providing an upper value for the M(HI)/L(B) ratio equal to 2.4 solar masses/solar luminosities. The low value of the HI content suggested by the observations, together with the galaxy optical morphology, might indicate that APPLES1 is a dwarf spheroidal. This indication is in contrast with the evidence of recent star formation, which is typical for dwarf irregular galaxies. This may suggest that APPLES1 belongs to the class of mixed dwarf irregular/spheroidal transition-type galaxies. We also conclude that the relatively low neutral gas mass in APPLES1 can be explained by an extended and inefficient star formation process, without the need for a dramatic event such as enhanced star formation or a past encounter with a massive galaxy or galaxy group., Comment: 5 pages including 2 figures, accepted for publication in A&A Main Journal

We study the globular cluster (GC) system of the Virgo giant elliptical galaxy NGC 4365, using new wide-field VIK imaging. The GC colour distribution has (at least) two peaks, but the colours of the red GCs appear more strongly weighted towards intermediate colours compared to most other large ellipticals and the integrated galaxy light. The intermediate-color/red peak may itself be composed of two sub-populations, with clusters of intermediate colours more concentrated towards the centre of the galaxy than both the blue and red GCs. Nearly all intermediate-colour and red GCs in our sample show an offset towards red V-K and/or blue V-I colours compared to SSP models for old ages in a (V-K,V-I) diagram. This has in the past been interpreted as evidence for intermediate ages. We also combine our VIK data with previously published spectroscopy. The differences between observed and model colour-metallicity relations are consistent with the offsets observed in the two-colour diagram, with the metal-rich GCs being too red (by about 0.2 mag) in V-K and too blue (by about 0.05 mag) in V-I compared to the models at a given metallicity. These offsets cannot easily be explained as an effect of younger ages. We conclude that, while intermediate GC ages cannot be definitively ruled out, an alternative scenario is more likely whereby all the GCs are old but the relative number of intermediate-metallicity GCs is greater than typical for giant ellipticals. The main obstacle to reaching a definitive conclusion is the lack of robust calibrations of integrated spectral and photometric properties for stellar populations with near-solar metallicity. In any case, it is puzzling that the intermediate-colour GCs in NGC 4365 are not accompanied by a corresponding shift of the integrated galaxy light towards bluer colours., Comment: 23 pages, including 20 figures and 5 tables. High signal-to-noise, low-resolution spectra have been obtained for 22 globular clusters (GCs) in NGC 4365. Some of these were selected as probable representatives of an intermediate-age (2-5 Gyr), extremely metal-rich GC subpopulation. The presence of such a subpopulation had been inferred from the unusual optical and near-IR color distributions of GCs in this otherwise typical Virgo elliptical galaxy. However, ages derived from Lick indices are consistent with uniformly old mean ages for all GCs in our sample. The metallicities of the clusters show some evidence for a trimodal distribution. The most metal-poor and metal-rich peaks are consistent with the values expected for an elliptical galaxy of this luminosity, but there appears to be an additional, intermediate-metallicity peak lying between them. New Hubble Space Telescope photometry is consistent with this result. A plausible scenario is that in earlier data these three peaks merged into a single broad distribution. Our results suggest that it is difficult to identify intermediate-age GC subpopulations solely with photometry, even when both optical and near-infrared colors are used., Comment: 30 pages, including 11 figures. Young star clusters with masses well in excess of 100.000 Msun have been observed not only in merger galaxies and large-scale starbursts, but also in fairly normal, undisturbed spiral and irregular galaxies. HST is very well tailored for observations of extragalactic star clusters. One obvious reason is HST's high spatial resolution, but equally important is the wavelength range offered by the instruments on board HST, in particular the blue and near-UV coverage which is essential for age-dating young clusters. HST observations have helped establish the ubiquity of young massive clusters (YMCs) in a wide variety of star-forming environments, from dwarf galaxies and spiral disks to nuclear starbursts and mergers. These YMCs have masses and sizes similar to those of old globular clusters (GCs), and the two may be closely related. A large fraction of all stars seem to be born in clusters, but most clusters disrupt rapidly and the stars disperse to become part of the field population. In most cases studied to date the luminosity functions of young cluster systems are well fit by power-laws dN(L)/dL ~ L^-2, and the luminosity of the brightest cluster can (with few exceptions) be predicted from simple sampling statistics. Mass functions have only been constrained in a few cases, but appear to be well approximated by similar power-laws. The absence of any characteristic mass scale for cluster formation suggests that star clusters of all masses form by the same basic process, without any need to invoke special mechanisms for the formation of YMCs. It is possible, however, that special conditions can lead to the formation of a few YMCs in some dwarfs where the mass function is discontinuous. Using new data from the UVES spectrograph on the ESO Very Large Telescope and archive images from the Hubble Space Telescope, we have measured projected velocity dispersions and structural parameters for two bright young star clusters in the nearby spiral galaxy NGC 5236. One cluster is located near the nuclear starburst of NGC 5236, at a projected distance of 440 pc from the centre, while the other is located in the disk of the galaxy at a projected galactocentric distance of 2.3 kpc. We estimate virial masses for the two clusters of (4.2+/-0.7)x10^5 Msun and (5.2+/-0.8)x10^5 Msun and ages (from broad-band photometry) of 10^(7.1+/-0.2} years and 10^(8.0+/-0.1) years, respectively. Comparing the observed mass-to-light (M/L) ratios with simple stellar population models, we find that the data for both clusters are consistent with a Kroupa-type stellar mass function (MF). In particular, we rule out any MF with a significantly lower M/L ratio than the Kroupa MF, such as a Salpeter-like MF truncated at a mass of 1 Msun or higher. These clusters provide a good illustration of the fact that massive, globular cluster-like objects ("super star clusters") can form at the present epoch even in the disks of seemingly normal, undisturbed spiral galaxies., Comment: 11 pages, including 6 figures and 6 tables. We have obtained high-dispersion spectra for four massive star clusters in the dwarf irregular galaxies NGC 4214 and NGC 4449, using the HIRES spectrograph on the Keck I telescope. Combining the velocity dispersions of the clusters with structural parameters and photometry from images taken with HST, we estimate mass-to-light ratios and compare these with simple stellar population (SSP) models in order to constrain the stellar mass functions (MFs). For all clusters we find mass-to-light ratios which are similar to or slightly higher than for a Kroupa MF, and thereby rule out any MF which is deficient in low-mass stars compared to a Kroupa-type MF. The four clusters have virial masses ranging between 2.1E5 Msun and 1.5E6 Msun, half-light radii between 3.0 and 5.2 pc, estimated core densities in the range 2E3 Msun pc^-3 to 2E5 Msun pc^-3 and ages between 200 Myr and 800 Myr. We also present new high-dispersion near-infrared spectroscopy for a luminous young (about 15 Myr) cluster in the nearby spiral galaxy NGC 6946, which we have previously observed with HIRES. The new measurements in the infrared agree well with previous estimates of the velocity dispersion, yielding a mass of about 1.7E6 Msun. The properties of the clusters studied here are all consistent with the clusters being young versions of the old globular clusters found around all major galaxies., Comment: 30 pages, including 7 figures and 9 tables. Young star clusters with masses similar to those of classical old globular clusters are observed not only in starbursts, mergers or otherwise disturbed galaxies, but also in normal spiral galaxies. Some young clusters with masses as high as ~10^6 Msun have been found in the disks of isolated spirals. Dynamical mass estimates are available for a few of these clusters and are consistent with Kroupa-type IMFs. The luminosity (and possibly mass-) functions of young clusters are usually well approximated by power-laws. Thus, massive clusters at the tail of the distribution are naturally rare, but appear to be present whenever clusters form in large numbers. Observations indicate that young massive star clusters in spiral and dwarf galaxies follow a relation between luminosity of the brightest young cluster and the star-formation rate (SFR) of the host galaxy, in the sense that higher SFRs lead to the formation of brighter clusters. Assuming that the empirical relation between maximum cluster luminosity and SFR reflects an underlying similar relation between maximum cluster mass (M_ecl,max) and SFR, we compare the resulting SFR(M_ecl,max) relation with different theoretical models. The empirical correlation is found to suggest that individual star clusters form on a free-fall time-scale with their pre-cluster molecular-cloud-core radii typically being a few pc independent of mass. The cloud cores contract by factors of 5 to 10 while building-up the embedded cluster. A theoretical SFR(M_ecl,max) relation in very good agreement with the empirical correlation is obtained if the cluster mass function of a young population has a Salpeter exponent beta approx. 2.35 and if this cluster population forms within a characteristic time-scale of a few-10 Myr. This short time-scale can be understood if the inter-stellar medium is pressurised thus precipitating rapid local fragmentation and collapse on a galactic scale. Such triggered star formation on a galactic scale is observed to occur in interacting galaxies. With a global SFR of 3-5 Msol/yr the Milky Way appears to lie on the empirical SFR(M_ecl,max) relation, given the recent detections of very young clusters with masses near 10^5 Msol in the Galactic disk. The observed properties of the stellar population of very massive young clusters suggests that there may exist a fundamental maximum cluster mass, 10^6 < M_ecl,max*/Msol < 10^7., Comment: 8 pages, 9 figures, to be published in MNRAS

A search for stellar clusters has been carried out in 18 nearby spiral galaxies, using HST/WFPC2 archive images. All of the galaxies have previously been imaged from the ground in UBVI. A catalogue of structural parameters, photometry and comments based on visual inspection of the clusters is compiled and used to investigate correlations between cluster structure, environment, age and mass. Least-squares fits to the data suggest correlations between both the FWHM and half-light radius (Reff) of the clusters and their masses (M) at about the 3-sigma level. Although both relations show a large scatter, the fits have substantially shallower slopes than for a constant-density relation. However, many of the youngest clusters have extended halos which make the Reff determinations uncertain. There is no evidence for galaxy-to-galaxy variations in the mean cluster sizes. In particular, the mean sizes do not appear to depend on the host galaxy star formation rate surface density. Many of the youngest objects (age < 10 Myr) are located in strongly crowded regions, and about 1/3-1/2 of them are double or multiple sources. The HST images are also used to check the nature of cluster candidates identified in a previous ground-based survey. The contamination rate in the ground-based sample is generally less than about 20%, but some cluster identifications remain ambiguous because of crowding even with HST imaging, especially for the youngest objects., Comment: 18 pages, 16 figures. The HST data archive contains images of several nearby spirals, suitable for detailed studies of the properties of individual star clusters and their surroundings. By combining structural information derived from HST images with ground-based photometry, it is possible to study cluster properties as a function of age and mass. While both the core- and effective radii of young clusters correlate with mass, the slopes of these relations are shallower than for a constant-density relation, implying that the mean density increases with cluster mass. Several recent studies have reported a mean size difference of about 20% between the metal-rich and metal-poor subpopulations of globular clusters (GCs) in a variety of galaxies. In this paper we investigate the possibility that the size difference might be a projection effect, resulting from a correlation between cluster size and galactocentric distance, combined with different radial distributions of the GC subpopulations. We find that projection effects may indeed account for a size difference similar to the observed one, provided that there is a steep relation between GC size and galactocentric distance in the central parts of the GC system and that the density of GCs flattens off near the center in a manner similar to a King profile. For more centrally peaked distributions, such as a de Vaucouleurs law, or for shallower size-radius relations, projection effects are unable to produce the observed differences in the size distributions., Comment: 30 pages, including 14 figures and 2 tables. We present new accurate CCD uvby light curves for the LMC eclipsing binaries HV982 and HV12578, and for the SMC systems HV1433 and HV11284 obtained at the Danish 1.5m telescope at ESO, La Silla. The light curves were derived from DoPHOT photometry, and typical accuracies are between 0.007 and 0.012 mag per point. Standard uvby indices have also been established for each binary, primarily for determination of interstellar reddening and absorption. For HV982 and HV12578, accurate photometric elements have been established. Both systems consist of two detached components of comparable sizes in an eccentric orbit. Adopting the spectroscopic elements given by Fitzpatrick et al. 2002 for HV982, we derive absolute dimensions of its components which agree well with their results. A distance modulus of V_0-M_V = 18.63 +/- 0.08 is obtained, corresponding to a distance of 52.6 +/- 2.0 kpc, which is in formal agreement with (although slightly larger than) their determination. HV1433 and HV11284 both consist of two rather close, deformed and quite different stars. As the mass ratios between the components (and their rotation rates) are not known, definitive photometric elements can not yet be obtained, but we present a sample of possible photometric solutions. In a series of forthcoming papers we will combine our uvby observations with high-dispersion spectra from the UVES spectrograph on the ESO Very Large Telescope (VLT) and present absolute dimensions, chemical abundances and distances for selected LMC and SMC systems, including HV12578 and refined results for HV982., Comment: 24 pages, 16 figures, 40 tables. We present spectroscopy for globular clusters (GCs) in the elliptical galaxy NGC 4365, obtained with the LRIS spectrograph on the Keck I telescope. Previous studies have shown that the optical color distribution of GCs in NGC 4365 lacks the bimodal structure that is common in globular cluster systems, showing only a single broad peak. Measurements of Balmer line indices (Hbeta, Hgamma and Hdelta) on the GC spectra support recent suggestions by Puzia et al., based on optical and near-infrared photometry, that some of the clusters in NGC 4365 are intermediate-age (2-5 Gyrs) and metal-rich (-0.4<[Z/H]<0) rather than old (~10-15 Gyrs) and metal-poor. We also find some genuinely metal-poor, old clusters, suggesting that the ages and metallicities of the two populations conspire to produce the single broad distribution observed in optical colors., Comment: 19 pages, including 6 figures and 3 tables. We present moderate-resolution Keck spectra of nine candidate globular clusters in the possible merger-remnant elliptical galaxy NGC 3610. Eight of the objects appear to be bona fide globular clusters of NGC 3610. We find that two of the clusters belong to an old metal-poor population, five to an old metal-rich population, and only one to an intermediate-age metal-rich population. The estimated age of the intermediate-age cluster is 1-5 Gyr, which is in agreement with earlier estimates of the merger age, and suggests that this cluster was formed during the merger. However, the presence of five old metal-rich clusters indicates that a substantial number of the metal-rich clusters in NGC 3610 likely came from the progenitor galaxies, although the global ratio of old to intermediate-age metal-rich clusters remains very uncertain., Comment: 25 pages, including 8 figures. Using high-dispersion spectra from the HIRES echelle spectrograph on the Keck I telescope, we measure velocity dispersions for 4 globular clusters in M33. Combining the velocity dispersions with integrated photometry and structural parameters derived from King-Michie model fits to WFPC2 images, we obtain mass-to-light ratios for the clusters. The mean value is M/LV = 1.53 +/- 0.18, very similar to the M/LV of Milky Way and M31 globular clusters. The M33 clusters also fit very well onto the fundamental plane and binding energy - luminosity relations derived for Milky Way GCs. Star clusters in 6 nearby spiral galaxies are examined using archive images from HST/WFPC2. The galaxies have previously been studied from the ground and some of them are known to possess rich populations of "young massive clusters" (YMCs). Comparison with the HST images indicates a success-rate of about 75% for the ground-based cluster detections, with typical contaminants being blends or loose groupings of several stars in crowded regions. The luminosity functions (LFs) of cluster candidates identified on the HST images are analyzed and compared with existing data for the Milky Way and the LMC. The LFs are well approximated by power-laws of the form dN(L)/dL ~ L^alpha, with slopes in the range -2.4

We describe the results of a long-slit spectroscopic study of an unusual star complex in the nearby spiral galaxy NGC 6946 using the SAO 6-m telescope and the Keck 10-m telescope. The complex resembles a circular bubble 600 pc in diameter with a young super star cluster (SSC) near the center. The kinematics of ionized gas is studied through Ha emission with several slit positions. Position-velocity diagrams show two distinct features with high speed motions. One is an irregularly shaped region to the east of the SSC, 270 pc in size, in which most of the Ha emission is blue shifted by 120 km/s, and another is a 350 pc shell centered on the SSC with positive and negative velocity shifts of 60 km/s. Balmer and HeI absorption lines in the SSC give an age of 12-13 Myr, which is consistent with the photometric age but significantly older than the kinematic ages of the high speed regions. The energetics of the SSC and its interaction with the environment are considered. The expansion energies exceed 10^52 ergs, but the power outputs from winds and supernova in the SSC are large enough to account for this. The intensities of Balmer, [NII], and [SII] emission lines within and around the complex indicate that shock excitation makes a significant contribution to the emission from the most energetic region., Comment: LaTeX, 11 pages and 11 GIF files in tar-archive with figures. We analyze high signal-to-noise spectra for 14 globular clusters (GCs) in the Sombrero galaxy, NGC 4594 = M104, obtained with the LRIS spectrograph on the Keck I telescope. We find generally good agreement between spectroscopic metallicities and previous photometric metallicities based on V-I colors. Further, we use measurements of various Balmer line indices on co-added spectra of metal-poor and metal-rich GCs to estimate ages for the GC subpopulations and find ages of 10-15 Gyr, with preferred ages around 11-12 Gyr and no detectable differences between the metal-rich and metal-poor subpopulations. However, because of model and measurement uncertainties, age differences of a few (2-3) Gyrs cannot be be ruled out. We also measure alpha-to-iron abundance ratios from Mg and TiO features and find enhancements on the order of +0.4 dex relative to the Sun, similar to the alpha/Fe abundance ratios observed in other old stellar populations. Finally, we combined our sample with radial velocities for 34 GCs from Bridges et al. 1997 and obtain virial and projected masses for the Sombrero of M(Vir) = 8.1+/-1.8 x 10^11 M(sun) and M(P) = 5.3+/-1.0 x 10^11 Msun within 17 kpc, respectively. Using 12 clusters within the central 4.5 kpc, the corresponding numbers are M(Vir) = 2.1+/-1.1 x 10^11 Msun and M(P) = 2.0+/-1.3 x 10^11 Msun., Comment: 24 pages, including 9 figures and 3 tables. Using spectra obtained with the Keck I telescope we have demonstrated conclusively that the faint (237--8 Gyr), moderately metal-rich ([Fe/H]=-0.58+/-0.24) and, having a system rotation curve which is very similar to that of the host galaxy, are associated with the lenticular disk. Alpha-element to iron abundance ratios are highly supersolar with [alpha/Fe] between +0.3 and +0.6. With moderately high metallicities and luminosities, and effective radii in the range 7--15 pc (compared to the 2--3 pc sizes typical of normal globular and open clusters), this population of clusters has no known analog in the Milky Way or elsewhere in the Local Group., Comment: 24 pages, 10 figures, 4 tables. We present Keck/LRIS spectra for 11 old globular clusters in the S0-type galaxy NGC 1023 and 2 young blue clusters in the nearby companion NGC 1023A. Analysis of the spectra of 7 old clusters with sufficient S/N shows generally good agreement between spectroscopic and previous photometric metallicity estimates, but the integrated colors of two clusters are too blue for their spectroscopic metallicities. Although the cluster ages are not well constrained, they are most likely similar to those of Milky Way globular clusters and certainly older than about 5 Gyr. The brightest GC in the sample shows enhanced cyanogen, possibly indicating an abundance anomaly similar to that observed in some M31 globular clusters. For the two blue clusters in NGC 1023A we estimate ages between 125 and 500 Myr, based on their strong Balmer lines. The total masses are about 80000 Msun and 60000 Msun for a Miller-Scalo IMF and Z=0.004, making these objects similar to the young populous clusters in the LMC. It is suggested that the two young clusters might have formed during a period of enhanced star formation activity in NGC 1023A, stimulated by a close encounter with NGC 1023., Comment: 32 pages, including 7 figures and 6 tables. The stellar populations in a stellar complex in NGC 6946 are analyzed on images taken with the Wide Field Planetary Camera 2 on board the Hubble Space Telescope. The complex is peculiar by its very high density of stars and clusters and semicircular shape. Its physical dimensions are about the same as for the local Gould Belt, but the stellar density is 1 - 2 orders of magnitude higher. In addition to an extremely luminous, 15 Myr old cluster discussed in an earlier paper, accounting for about 17% of the integrated V-band light, we identify 18 stellar clusters within the complex with luminosities similar to the brightest open clusters in the Milky Way. The color-magnitude diagram of individual stars in the complex shows a paucity of red supergiants compared to model predictions in the 10-20 Myr age range for a uniform star formation rate. We thus find tentative evidence for a gap in the dispersed star formation history, with a concentration of star formation into a young globular cluster during this gap. Confirmation of this result must, however, await a better understanding of the late evolution of stars in the corresponding mass range (> 12 Msun). A reddening map based on individual reddenings for 373 early-type stars is presented, showing significant variations in the absorption across the complex. These may be responsible for some of the arc-like structures previously identified on ground-based images. We explore the rich globular cluster (GC) system of the nearby Sa galaxy M104, the "Sombrero" (NGC 4594), using archive WFPC2 data. The GC colour distribution is found to be bimodal at the > 99% level, with peaks at V-I = 0.96+/-0.03 and 1.21+/-0.03 (corrected for foreground reddening). The inferred metallicities are very similar to those of globular clusters in our Galaxy and M31. However the Sombrero reveals a much enhanced number of red (metal-rich) GCs compared to other well-studied spirals. Because the Sombrero is dominated by a huge bulge and only has a modest disk, we associate the two sub-populations with the halo and bulge components respectively. Thus our analysis supports the view that the metal-rich GCs in spirals are associated with the bulge rather than with the disk. The Sombrero GCs have typical effective (half-light) radii of about 2 pc with the red ones being about 30% smaller than the blue ones. We identify many similarities between the Sombrero's GC system and those of both late type spirals and early-type galaxies. Thus both the GC system and the Hubble type of the Sombrero galaxy appear to be intermediate in their nature., Comment: 12 pages, including 11 figures and 2 tables. Accepted for publication in MNRAS

The structure of a very bright (MV = -10.9) globular cluster in NGC 1023 is analyzed on two sets of images taken with the Hubble Space Telescope. From careful modeling of King profile fits to the cluster image, a core radius of 0.55+/-0.1 pc, effective radius 3.7+/-0.3 pc and a central V-band surface brightness of 12.9+/-0.5 mag / square arcsec are derived. This makes the cluster much more compact than Omega Cen, but very similar to the brightest globular cluster in M31, G1 = Mayall II. The cluster in NGC 1023 appears to be very highly flattened with an ellipticity of about 0.37, even higher than for Omega Cen and G1, and similar to the most flattened clusters in the Large Magellanic Cloud., Comment: 14 pages, 3 figures, 1 table.
