Search

We review the observational properties and possible carriers of the 21 and 30 μm features seen in the spectra of evolved carbon-rich objects. The 30 μm feature is generally taken to be due to MgS, possibly in combination with other sulfides. It is commonly assumed that the sulfides coat grains of SiC or amorphous carbon, but it remains unclear if coated grains can produce the observed feature given the low relative abundance of sulfur and the optical constraints on the thickness of the coating and size of the grains. The lack of optical constants for MgS at wavelengths below 1 μm hampers attempts to model the dust shells of these objects. A small number of alternative carriers have been proposed, but these have not been investigated thoroughly. The situation for the 21 μm feature is more ambiguous. Many carriers have been proposed, but each has issues, and none have gained broad support. The feature only appears in carbon-rich objects which have evolved off of the asymptotic giant branch but have not yet become planetary nebulae. The spectral class of the central star is typically F or G. The transient nature of the 21 μm feature is an important clue to the nature of its carrier. It appears with a variety of other infrared emission features related to complex hydrocarbons, including aliphatic species and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, but correlations with specific features have proven difficult to quantify.

We selected a sample of post-AGB candidates in the Magellanic Clouds on the basis of their near- and mid-infrared colour characteristics. Fifteen of the most optically bright post-AGB candidates were observed with the South African Large Telescope in order to determine their stellar parameters and thus to validate or discriminate their nature as post-AGB objects in the Magellanic Clouds. The spectral types of absorption-line objects were estimated according to the MK classification, and effective temperatures were obtained by means of stellar atmosphere modelling. Emission-line objects were classified on the basis of the fluxes of the emission lines and the presence of the continuum. Out of 15 observed objects, only 4 appear to be genuine post-AGB stars (27\%). In the SMC, 1 out of 4 is post-AGB, and in the LMC, 3 out 11 are post-AGB objects. Thus, we can conclude that the selected region in the colour-colour diagram, while selecting the genuine post-AGB objects, overlaps severely with other types of objects, in particular young stellar objects and planetary nebulae. Additional classification criteria are required to distinguish between post-AGB stars and other types of objects. In particular, photometry at far-IR wavelengths would greatly assist in distinguishing young stellar objects from evolved ones. Commission 25 (C25) deals with the techniques and issues involved with the measurement of optical and infrared radiation intensities and polarization from astronomical sources. As such, in recent years attention has focused on photometric standard stars, atmospheric extinction, photometric passbands, transformation between systems, nomenclature, and observing and reduction techniques. At the start of the trimester C25 changed its name from Stellar Photometry and Polarization to Astronomical Photometry and Polarization so as to explicitly include in its mandate particular issues arising from the measurement of resolved sources, given the importance of photometric redshifts of distant galaxies for many of the large photometric surveys now underway. We begin by summarizing commission activities over the 2012-2014 period, follow with a report on Polarimetry, continue with Photometry topics that have been of interest to C25 members, and conclude with a Vision for the Future.

We present an analysis and comparison of the 30 micron dust features seen in the Spitzer Space Telescope spectra of 207 carbon-rich asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars, post-AGB objects, and planetary nebulae located in the Milky Way, the Magellanic Clouds (MCs), or the Sagittarius dwarf spheroidal galaxy (Sgr dSph), which are characterised by different average metallicities. We investigated whether the formation of the 30 micron feature carrier may be a function of the metallicity. Through this study we expect to better understand the late stages of stellar evolution of carbon-rich stars in these galaxies. Our analysis uses the `Manchester method' as a basis for estimating the temperature of dust for the carbon-rich AGB stars and the planetary nebulae in our sample. We used a black-body function with a single temperature deduced from the Manchester method or its modification to approximate the continuum under the 30 micron feature. The most important conclusion of our work is the fact that the formation of the 30 micron feature is affected by metallicity. Specifically that, as opposed to more metal-poor samples of AGB stars in the MCs, the feature is seen at lower mass-loss rates, higher temperatures, and has seen to be more prominent in Galactic carbon stars. The averaged feature (profile) in the AGB, post-AGB objects, and PNe seems unaffected by metallicity at least between a fifth and solar metallicity, but in the case of PNe it is shifted to significantly longer wavelengths., Comment: 46 pages, 46 figures

We present diffraction limited, 10um imaging polarimetry data for the central regions of the archetypal Seyfert AGN, NGC1068. The position angle of polarization is consistent with three dominant polarizing mechanisms. We identify three distinct regions of polarization: (a) north of the nucleus, arising from aligned dust in the NLR, (b) south, east and west of the nucleus, consistent with dust being channeled toward the central engine and (c) a central minimum of polarization consistent with a compact (, 12 pages, 2 figures, 1 table, to be published in ApJL

The Infrared Spectrograph on the Spitzer Space Telescope observed 184 carbon stars in the Magellanic Clouds. This sample reveals that the dust-production rate (DPR) from carbon stars generally increases with the pulsation period of the star. The composition of the dust grains follows two condensation sequences, with more SiC condensing before amorphous carbon in metal-rich stars, and the order reversed in metal-poor stars. MgS dust condenses in optically thicker dust shells, and its condensation is delayed in more metal-poor stars. Metal-poor carbon stars also tend to have stronger absorption from C2H2 at 7.5 um. The relation between DPR and pulsation period shows significant apparent scatter, which results from the initial mass of the star, with more massive stars occupying a sequence parallel to lower-mass stars, but shifted to longer periods. Accounting for differences in the mass distribution between the carbon stars observed in the Small and Large Magellanic Clouds reveals a hint of a subtle decrease in the DPR at lower metallicities, but it is not statistically significant. The most deeply embedded carbon stars have lower variability amplitudes and show SiC in absorption. In some cases they have bluer colors at shorter wavelengths, suggesting that the central star is becoming visible. Spitzer MIPS 24 um images were obtained for 36 Galactic planetary nebulae (PNe) whose central stars are hot white dwarfs (WDs) or pre-WDs with effective temperatures of ~100,000 K or higher. Diffuse 24 um emission is detected in 28 of these PNe. The eight non-detections are angularly large PNe with very low H-alpha surface brightnesses. We find three types of correspondence between the 24 um emission and H-alpha line emission of these PNe: six show 24 um emission more extended than H-alpha emission, nine have a similar extent at 24 um and H-alpha, and 13 show diffuse 24 um emission near the center of the H-alpha shell. The sizes and surface brightnesses of these three groups of PNe and the non-detections suggest an evolutionary sequence, with the youngest ones being brightest and the most evolved ones undetected. The 24 um band emission from these PNe is attributed to [O IV] 25.9 um and [Ne V] 24.3 um line emission and dust continuum emission, but the relative contributions of these three components depend on the temperature of the central star and the distribution of gas and dust in the nebula., 24 pages, 8 figures, to appear in the Astronomical Journal, September issue. We report on an analysis of the gas and dust budget in the the interstellar medium (ISM) of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). Recent observations from the Spitzer Space Telescope enable us to study the mid-infrared dust excess of asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars in the LMC. This is the first time we can quantitatively assess the gas and dust input from AGB stars over a complete galaxy, fully based on observations. The integrated mass-loss rate over all intermediate and high mass-loss rate carbon-rich AGB candidates in the LMC is 8.5x10^-3 solar mass per year, up to 2.1x10^-2 solar mass per year. This number could be increased up to 2.7x10^-2 solar mass per year, if oxygen-rich stars are included. This is overall consistent with theoretical expectations, considering the star formation rate when these low- and intermediate-mass stars where formed, and the initial mass functions. AGB stars are one of the most important gas sources in the LMC, with supernovae (SNe), which produces about 2-4x10^-2 solar mass per year. At the moment, the star formation rate exceeds the gas feedback from AGB stars and SNe in the LMC, and the current star formation depends on gas already present in the ISM. This suggests that as the gas in the ISM is exhausted, the star formation rate will eventually decline in the LMC, unless gas is supplied externally. Our estimates suggest `a missing dust-mass problem' in the LMC, which is similarly found in high-z galaxies: the accumulated dust mass from AGB stars and possibly SNe over the dust life time (400--800 Myrs) is significant less than the dust mass in the ISM. Using the data obtained with the Spitzer Space telescope as part of the Surveying the Agents of a Galaxy's Evolution (SAGE) legacy survey, we have studied the variations of the dust composition and abundance across the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). Such variations are expected, as the explosive events which have lead to the formation of the many HI shells observed should have affected the dust properties. Using a model and comparing with a reference spectral energy distribution from our Galaxy, we deduce the relative abundance variations of small dust grains across the LMC. We examined the infrared color ratios as well as the relative abundances of very small grains (VSGs) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) relative to the big grain (BG) abundance. Results show that each dust component could have different origins or evolution in the interstellar medium (ISM). The VSG abundance traces the star formation activity and could result from shattering of larger grains, whereas the PAH abundance increases around molecular clouds as well as in the stellar bar, where they could have been injected into the ISM during mass loss from old stars., Received 2009 February 13; Accepted 2009 April 28

We have carried out mid-infrared spectroscopy of seven Galactic proto-planetary nebulae (PPNs) using the Spitzer Space Telescope. They were observed from 10-36 microns at relatively high spectral resolution, R~600. The sample was chosen because they all gave some evidence in the visible of a carbon-rich chemistry. All seven of the sources show the broad, unidentified 21 micron emission feature; three of them are new detections (IRAS 06530-0213, 07430+1115, and 19477+2401) and the others are observed at higher S/N than in previous spectra. These have the same shape and central wavelength (20.1 microns) as found in the ISO spectra of the brighter PPNs. The 30 micron feature was seen in all seven objects. However, it is not resolved into two separate features (26 and 33 microns) as was claimed on the basis of ISO spectra, which presumably suffered from the noisy detector bands in this region. All showed the infrared aromatic bands (AIB) at 11.3, 12.4, and 13.3 microns. Five of these also appear to have the C2H2 molecular band at 13.7 microns, one in absorption and four in emission. This is extremely rare, with only one other evolved star, IRC+10216, in which C2H2 emission has been observed. Four also possessed a broad, unidentified emission feature at 15.8 microns that may possibly be related to the 21 micron feature. Model fits were made to the spectral energy distributions for these PPNs to determine properties of the detached circumstellar envelopes. The 21 micron feature has been seen in all Galactic carbon-rich PPNs observed, and thus its carrier appears to be a common component of the outflow around these objects.

Early results from the SAGE-SMC (Surveying the Agents of Galaxy Evolution in the tidally-disrupted, low-metallicity Small Magellanic Cloud) Spitzer legacy program are presented. These early results concentrate on the SAGE-SMC MIPS observations of the SMC Tail region. This region is the high H i column density portion of the Magellanic Bridge adjacent to the SMC Wing. We detect infrared dust emission and measure the gas-to-dust ratio in the SMC Tail and find it similar to that of the SMC Body. In addition, we find two embedded cluster regions that are resolved into multiple sources at all MIPS wavelengths.

We present ~1000 new candidate Young Stellar Objects (YSOs) in the Large Magellanic Cloud selected from Spitzer Space Telescope data, as part of the Surveying the Agents of a Galaxy's Evolution (SAGE) Legacy program. The YSOs, detected by their excess infrared (IR) emission, represent early stages of evolution, still surrounded by disks and/or infalling envelopes. Previously, fewer than 20 such YSOs were known. The candidate YSOs were selected from the SAGE Point Source Catalog from regions of color-magnitude space least confused with other IR-bright populations. The YSOs are biased toward intermediate- to high-mass and young evolutionary stages, because these overlap less with galaxies and evolved stars in color-magnitude space. The YSOs are highly correlated spatially with atomic and molecular gas, and are preferentially located in the shells and bubbles created by massive stars inside. They are more clustered than generic point sources, as expected if star formation occurs in filamentary clouds or shells. We applied a more stringent color-magnitude selection to produce a subset of "high-probability" YSO candidates. We fitted the spectral-energy distributions (SEDs) of this subset and derived physical properties for those that were well fitted. The total mass of these well-fitted YSOs is ~2900 M_☉ and the total luminosity is ~2.1 × 10^6 L_☉ . By extrapolating the mass function with a standard initial mass function and integrating, we calculate a current star-formation rate of ~0.06 M_☉ yr^(–1), which is at the low end of estimates based on total ultraviolet and IR flux from the galaxy (~0.05 – 0.25 M_☉ yr^(–1)), consistent with the expectation that our current YSO list is incomplete. Follow-up spectroscopy and further data mining will better separate the different IR-bright populations and likely increase the estimated number of YSOs. The full YSO list is available as electronic tables, and the SEDs are available as an electronic figure for further use by the scientific community.

Mid-infrared imaging of two bipolar proto-planetary nebulae, IRAS 17150-3224 and IRAS 17441-2411, was obtained with the Gemini telescope. Dust emissions are detected in both the bipolar lobes and in the equatorial region of IRAS 17441-2411. In particular, the orientation of the axis of the infrared torus is found to be offset by 23° from the bipolar axis. If the torus is responsible for or related to the collimation of the bipolar outflow, this raises the possibility that the outflow has undergone precession over the last 100 years.

Excess emission from a point-like source coincident with the central star of the Helix Nebula is detected with Spitzer at 8, 24, and 70 um. At 24 um, the central source is superposed on an extended diffuse emission region. While the [OIV] 25.89 um line contributes to the diffuse emission, a 10-35 um spectrum of the central source shows a strong thermal continuum. The excess emission from the star most likely originates from a dust disk with blackbody temperatures of 90--130 K. Assuming a simple optically thin debris disk model, the dust is distributed in a ring between ~35 and ~150 AU from the central star, possibly arising from collisions of Kuiper-Belt-like Objects or the break-up of comets from an Oort-like cloud that have survived from the post-main-sequence evolution of the central star., Comment: emulateapj format, accepted for publication in ApJ Letters

We have investigated the light variability in a sample of 22 carbon-rich post-AGB stars in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) and Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC), based primarily on photometric data from the OGLE survey. All are found to vary. Dominant periods are found in eight of them; these periods range from 49 to 157 days, and most of these stars have F spectral types. These eight are found to be similar to the Milky Way Galaxy (MWG) carbon-rich proto-planetary nebulae (PPNs) in several ways: (a) they are in the same period range of ~38 to ~160 days, (b) they have similar spectral types, (c) they are (all but one) redder when fainter, (d) they have multiple periods, closely spaced in time, with a average ratio of secondary to primary period of ~1.0, and as an ensemble, (e) they show a trend of decreasing period with increasing temperature, and (f) they show a trend of decreasing amplitude with decreasing period. However, they possibly differ in that the decreasing trend of period with temperature may be slightly offset from that of the MWG. These eight are classified as PPNs. The other 14 all show evidence of variability on shorter timescales. They are likely hotter PPNs or young planetary nebulae. However, in the MWG the numbers of PPNs peak in the F-G spectral types, while it appears that in the LMC they peak at a hotter B spectral type. High-resolution mid-infrared images have been obtained in N-band and Q-band for the proto-planetary nebula IRAS 16594-4656. A bright equatorial torus and a pair of bipolar lobes can clearly be seen in the infrared images. The torus appears thinner at the center than at the edges, suggesting that it is viewed nearly edge-on. The infrared lobes correspond to the brightest lobes of the reflection nebula seen in the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) optical image, but with no sign of the point-symmetric structure seen in the visible image. The lobe structure shows a close correspondence with a molecular hydrogen map obtained with HST, suggesting that the dust emission in the lobes traces the distribution of the shocked gas. The shape of the bipolar lobes shows clearly that the fast outflow is still confined by the remnant circumstellar envelope of the progenitor asymptotic giant branch (AGB) star. However, the non-detection of the dust outside of the lobes suggests that the temperature of the dust in the AGB envelope is too low for it to be detected at 20 microns., Comment: Accepted by the Astrophysical Journal

The bright ORB 050408 was localized by HETE-2 near local midnight in the Western Hemisphere, enabling an impressive ground-based follow-up effort, as well as space-based follow-up from Swift. The Swift data from the XRT and our own optical photometry and spectrum of the afterglow provide the cornerstone for our analysis. Under the traditional assumption that the visible wave band was above the peak synchrotron frequency and below the cooling frequency, the optical photometry of 0.03-5.03 days shows an afterglow decay corresponding to an electron energy index of plc = 2.05±0.04, without a jet break as suggested by others. A break is seen in the X-ray data at early times (at ∼ 12,600 s after the GRB). The spectral slope of the optical spectrum is consistent with plc assuming a host galaxy extinction of A v = 1.18 mag. The optical-NIR broadband spectrum is also consistent with p = 2.05 but prefers Av = 0.57 mag. The X-ray afterglow shows a break at 1.26×104 s, which may be the result of a refreshed shock. This burst stands out in that the optical and X-ray data suggest a large H I column density of NH I ≈ 1022 cm-2; it is very likely a damped Lyα system, so the faintness of the host galaxy (Mv > -18 mag) is noteworthy. Moreover, we detect extraordinarily strong Ti II absorption lines with a column density through the GRB host that exceeds the largest values observed for the Milky Way by 1 order of magnitude. Furthermore, the Ti II equivalent width is in the top 1% of Mg II absorption-selected QSOs. This suggests that the large-scale environment of GRB 050408 has significantly lower Ti depletion than our Galaxy and a large velocity width (δv > 150 km s-1). © 2006. We present high-resolution, nearly diffraction-limited narrow- and broadband mid-IR images of bipolar reflection nebula Hen 3-401. The deconvolved images yield a pixel-limited spatial resolution of 009, demonstrating the superior imaging quality of the Gemini telescope. The infrared image of Hen 3-401 consists of a prominent core region of size 1'' and extended emissions along the walls of the bipolar lobes. We find that the distribution of aromatic infrared band (AIB) emission is different from that of the continuum emission and that the star has undergone multiple ejection of the AIB emission feature carrier at the end stages of its evolution. From the observed temperature gradient in the core, we suggest that the core has a flared disk geometry.

Submillimeter lines of H2O and NH3 have been detected in the carbon star IRC +10216 (CW Leo) with the Odin submillimeter satellite. The detection of the J = 110 → 101 557 GHz line of ortho-H2O confirms the earlier detection in the same source with SWAS. The detection of the JK = 10 → 00 572 GHz line represents the first observation of the ground-state rotational transition of NH3 in a stellar envelope. By fitting a molecular line transfer model to the observed lines, we derive an ortho-H2O abundance of 2.4 × 10-6, which is consistent with estimates from the SWAS observation. The derived ortho-NH3 abundance of 1 × 10-6 relative to H2 is significantly higher than those derived from 24 GHz inversion transitions and is slightly higher than those from vibrational transitions in the infrared band. The high H2O and NH3 abundances in the carbon-rich star IRC +10216 underscore shortcomings in the conventional gas-phase LTE and non-LTE chemical models.

We present Odin observations of the AGB star W Hya in the ground-state transition of ortho-H2O, 1(10)-1(01), at 557GHz. The line is clearly of circumstellar origin. Radiative transfer modelling of the water lines observed by Odin and ISO results in a mass-loss rate of (2.5 +/- 0.5)E-7 Msol/yr, and a circumstellar H2O abundance of (2.0 +/- 1.0)E-3. The inferred mass-loss rate is consistent with that obtained from modelling the circumstellar CO radio line emission, and also with that obtained from the dust emission modelling combined with a dynamical model for the outflow. The very high water abundance, higher than the cosmic oxygen abundance, can be explained by invoking an injection of excess water from evaporating icy bodies in the system. High-resolution (015) 2.12 μm H2 and narrowband K images have been obtained of one cool proto-planetary nebula, IRAS 20028+3910, and two hot proto-planetary/young planetary nebulae, IRAS 19306+1407 and IRAS 22023+5249. The observations were made with an adaptive optics system and near-infrared imager on the Gemini North 8 m telescope. All three nebulae are seen to be extended, and in two and possibly all three of them H2 is found to be emitting from bipolar lobes. In IRAS 19306+1407, H2 emission is seen arising from a ring close to the star and from the edges of emerging bipolar lobes. In IRAS 20028+3910, one bright lobe and a very faint second lobe are seen in the H2 and K-band images, similar to the published visible images, but in the H2 and K-band images a faint filament appears to connect the two lobes. The central star is not seen in IRAS 20028+3910, indicating that the nebula is optically thick even at 2 μm, which is unusual. The images suggest that extended H2 emission is often the manifestation of fast-slow wind interactions in the bipolar lobes.

We present the first high spatial resolution mid-IR and far-IR images of the planetary nebula NGC 2346 using the Multiband Imaging Photometer for Spitzer (MIPS) on board the Spitzer Space Telescope. The morphology at 24 μm is strikingly similar to that seen in the optical image, with an additional unresolved hot dust component at the center. The 70 μm image reveals a torus-like structure near the narrow waist of the bipolar nebula, while the 160 μm image shows a very extended cold dust envelope around the nebula. Our new MIPS data provide direct evidence that the mass loss in the end of the asymptotic giant branch (AGB) phase diverts from spherical symmetry to axisymmetry and that the binary central star has played an important role in the bipolar nebular evolution.

An Artificial Neural Network (ANN) has been employed using a supervised back-propagation scheme to classify 2000 bright sources from the Calgary database of IRAS (Infrared Astronomy Satellite) spectra in the wavelength region of 8-23 microns. The data base has been classified into 17 pre-determined classes based on spectral morphology. We have been able to classify more than 80 percent of the 2000 sources correctly at the first instance. The speed and robustness of the scheme will allow us to classify the whole of LRS database, containing more than 50,000 sources in the future., Comment: 26 pages, To appear in ApJS after July 2004

Odin has successfully observed the molecular core rho Oph A in the 572.5 GHz rotational ground state line of ammonia, NH3 (J,K = 1,0 - 0,0). The interpretation of this result makes use of complementary molecular line data obtained from the ground (C17O and CH3OH) as part of the Odin preparatory work. Comparison of these observations with theoretical model calculations of line excitation and transfer yields a quite ordinary abundance of methanol, X(CH3OH) = 3e-9. Unless NH3 is not entirely segregated from C17O and CH3OH, ammonia is found to be significantly underabundant with respect to typical dense core values, viz. X(NH3) = 8e-10.

The Odin satellite, which can observe the 1 1 0 -1 0 1 rotational line at 557 GHz of ortho water with a high spectral resolution (80 m s - 1 ) and a spatial resolution of 2.1', is well suited for cometary studies. The intensity of this line provides an estimate of the water production rate. The line width gives a direct measure of the coma expansion velocity. The line centre position and shape are affected by the anisotropy of the outgassing and by optical depth effects. Comets observed with Odin up to now are C/2001 A2 (LINEAR) during the commissioning phase of the satellite, 19P/Borrelly at the time of the Deep Space 1 flyby, C/2000 WM 1 (LINEAR), and 153P/2002 Cl (Ikeya-Zhang). For this last comet, thorough observations were made at the moment of its closest approach to Earth at the end of April 2002. A deep integration resulted in the detection of the 1 1 0 -1 0 1 line of H 2 1 8 O at 548 GHz. No 1 6 O/ 1 8 O isotopic anomaly is found.

The intrinsic emission profile of the unidentified broad 30 μm emission feature is derived from Infrared Space Observatory (ISO) spectra of proto-planetary nebulae (PPNs). The feature is resolved into two components: a narrower feature at 26 μm and a broader feature at 33 μm. The intrinsic profiles of these two features and their varying strengths in PPNs are determined. The chemical origin of these features and the processes responsible for their changing strengths from asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars to PPNs to planetary nebulae are discussed.

The emission profiles of the 8 and 12 μm plateau features are derived from the Infrared Space Observatory spectra of proto-planetary nebulae. We suggest that these plateau features are primarily the result of alkane and alkene side groups on very large aromatic molecules and small carbonaceous particles. The relationship between the narrow aromatic hydrocarbon features and the 8 and 12 μm plateau features is discussed in a model of circumstellar chemical evolution where photochemical processing transforms the more aliphatic material in proto-planetary nebulae into more aromatic matter in planetary nebulae.

1858 OH satellite line (1612 MHz) maser sources associated with the IRAS counterparts were assembled from the literature. Cross-correlation between collected OH/IR - IRAS sources and the recent catalogue of the IRAS LRS spectra (Kwok et al. 1997) allows us to subdivide 1024 of them (after excluding OH sources with uncertain IRAS associations) into 10 groups according to the Volk & Cohen (1989) classification scheme. We have found that sources with silicate emission form the largest group (about 57%), followed by the group with silicate absorption (only about 16%). For more sensitive individual OH maser surveys these numbers differentiate even more and the ratio between silicate emission and absorption sources reaches a value close to 6. Surprisingly, we found an association of OH maser emission with a small number of stars with carbon-rich atmospheres. The distribution of these subgroups of OH/IR stars in the IRAS colour-colour and the period-colour diagrams as well as histograms of some physical properties are presented. The galactic distribution of important parameters (periods, IRAS colours, expansion and stellar velocities) for different classes of OH/IR sources is analyzed from the point of view of the stars' evolutionary status. The correlations among the periods, colours, expansion and star velocities and the pumping efficiencies for selected subgroups of OH/IR stars are also investigated. These analyses allow us to demonstrate that a significant fraction of silicate emission group sources do not form an evolutionary sequence with the silicate absorption objects- as is suggested e.g. by the IRAS colour-colour diagram, but rather form a lower initial mass sequence, i.e. these sources will never develop sufficient mass loss to manifest silicate absorption.

Infrared Space Observatory (ISO )2 ¨45 km observations of seven protoplanetary nebulae (PPNs) and two other carbon-rich objects are presented. The unidenti—ed emission features at 21 and 30 km are detected in six sources, including four new detections of the 30 km feature. This previously unresolved 30 km feature is now resolved and found to consist of a broad feature peaking at 27.2 km (the ii 30 k mˇ ˇ feature) and a narrower feature at 25.5 km (the ii 26 km ˇˇ feature). This new 26 km feature is detected in eight sources and is particularly strong in IRAS Z02229)6208 and 16594(4656. The unidenti—ed infra- red (UIR) emission features at 3.3, 6.2, 7.7, and 11.3 km, which are commonly observed in planetary nebulae and H II regions, are also seen in these PPNs. However, their strengths relative to the contin- uum plateaus at 8 and 12 km are weaker than in planetary nebulae. The 6.9 km feature, seen almost exclusively in PPNs, is strong. New millimeter CO and HCN observations were made; they support the carbon-rich nature of the objects and yield the expansion velocities of the gaseous envelopes. The spec- tral energy distributions of these PPNs were —tted with a radiative-transfer model, taking into account the emission features at 21, 26, and 30 km. A signi—cant fraction of the total energy output is emitted in these features: as high as 20% in the 30 km feature and 8% in the 21 km feature. The fact that so much energy is carried in these features suggests that the material responsible for these features must be made of abundant elements and most likely involves carbon. appears to be ruled out as the emitter of the SiS 2 21 km feature due to the absence of a predicted companion feature. In response to the recent molecular observations by ISO and millimeter-wave telescopes, we have developed a spherically symmetric, steady state chemical model for the planetary nebula NGC 7027. In our model, the neutral envelope consists of a geometrically thin, high-density shell of constant density and an outer stellar wind region with an inverse-square law density profile. The neutral envelope is subjected to ultraviolet (UV) radiation both from the central star and from the external interstellar field. Under an assumed visual extinction of 4 mag for the neutral envelope, the gas in our model is half molecular and half atomic. Simple molecules such as CH, CH+, OH are abundantly formed at an assumed gas temperature of 800 K in the partially molecular shell. The presence of molecular ions such as HCO+ and CO+ is well explained by photochemistry at high temperatures. The model CN/HCN ratio is almost constant at about 30 throughout the wind region and is 1-10 in the dense shell, comparable to observed values in planetary nebulae. Our model suggests that molecules are as efficiently formed with timescales shorter than 100 yr as they are photodissociated in the neutral envelope of NGC 7027 and probably in other young planetary nebulae.

We present Infrared Space Observatory (ISO) SWS01 (2-43 μm) and LWS01 (43-195 μm) observations of five highly evolved carbon stars with extremely thick circumstellar envelopes. The unidentified 30 μm emission feature is detected in the SWS01 spectra of all five sources. This feature seems to be resolved into two subfeatures at 25.5 and 28.3 μm in two sources. These same two sources show a weak emission feature near 20 μm which may be the same as the 21 μm feature seen in carbon-rich proto-planetary nebulae. Absorption features at 13.7 μm attributed to C2H2 are also detected in four sources. No dust feature is detected in the LWS spectra. The only line present is the 157.74 μm line of C+, which could be interstellar in origin. We present radiative transfer models for the spectra of these five stars assuming that the dust is amorphous carbon. The derived optical depths at 11.2 μm range from 1.4 to 4.5, corresponding to optical depths at V = 190-600, making these stars among the asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars with the most optically thick dust envelopes. From the model fittings, we found the 30 μm features to be optically thick with 5%-8% of the total stellar luminosities being emitted in the feature. For four of the five stars, the models also suggest that their mass-loss rates have been increasing rapidly over the last few 104 yr periods, with current mass-loss rates as high as 4 × 10-4 (D/kpc) M☉ yr-1. Such high mass-loss rates imply that these stars are in the final stages of AGB evolution. The observations of these extreme carbon stars therefore represent the best cases to study the transition from AGB to proto-planetary nebulae.

Baade-Wesselink analyses of this important Galactic classical Cepheid provide new values for the radius, luminosity, distance, and mass and show SU Cas likely to be pulsating in the first overtone. Application of a modified Baade-Wesselink technique and the maximum likelihood method, which we have previously applied to δ Scuti–type variables, yield values of = 33.0 ± 1.1 R⊙, L = 1536 ± 291 L⊙, = -3.28, r = 486 ± 52 pc, mass (from the Baade-Wesselink radius), M = 6.5 ± 0.6 M⊙ (assuming first-overtone pulsation), and evolutionary mass, Mev = 5.5 ± 0.3 M⊙. The results are consistent with the Hipparcos satellite parallax, 2.31 ± 0.58 mas (433 pc), providing further support for overtone pulsation of SU Cas. In the course of the analyses, a modification to the maximum likelihood method, devised by one of us (W. J. F. W.), is presented as an alternative to the modifications of Laney & Stobie and Coulson, Caldwell, & Gieren.

We present Infrared Space Observatory SWS06 mode observations of the 21 micron feature in eight sources, including a first "detection of the feature in IRAS Z02229+6208. The observed feature peak-to-continuum ratios range from 0.13 in IRAS Z02229+6208 to 1.30 in IRAS 07134+1005. The normalized spectra, obtained by the removal of the underlying continua and by scaling the features to the same peak flux value. show that all features have the same intrinsic profile and peak wavelength. There is no evidence for any discrete substructure due to molecular bands in the observed spectra, suggesting that the 21 micron feature is due to either a solid substance or a mixture of many similarly structured large molecules.

The unidentified emission feature at 21 μm is now observed in 12 sources, all being objects in transition between the asymptotic giant branch and planetary nebulae phases. The relations between the 21 μm and other emission features, such as the PAH features and the broad 30 μm feature, and the possible origins of the 21 μm feature are discussed.

We analyze the dust emission features seen in Spitzer Space Telescope Infrared Spectrograph (IRS) spectra of red supergiant (RSG) and oxygen-rich asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars in the Large Magellanic Cloud and Small Magellanic Cloud galaxies and in various Milky Way globular clusters. The spectra come from the Spitzer Legacy program SAGE-Spectroscopy (PI: F. Kemper), the Spitzer program SMC-Spec (PI: G. Sloan), and other archival Spitzer-IRS programs. The broad 10 and 20 micron emission features attributed to amorphous dust of silicate composition seen in the spectra show evidence for systematic differences in the centroid of both emission features between O-rich AGB and RSG populations. Radiative transfer modeling using the GRAMS grid of models of AGB and RSG stars suggests that the centroid differences are due to differences in dust properties. We investigate differences in dust composition, size, shape, etc that might be responsible for these spectral differences. We explore how these differences may arise from the different circumstellar environments around RSG and O-rich AGB stars and assess effects of varying metallicity (LMC versus SMC versus Milky Way globular cluster) and other properties (mass-loss rate, luminosity, etc.) on the dust originating from these stars. The bipolar proto-planetary nebula IRAS 17441-2411 (the "Silkworm Nebula") was observed with the Hubble Space Telescope. By fitting the observed spectral energy distribution and the V-band image by a two-dimensional radiation transfer model, we derive the properties of the circumstellar wind and a proposed circumstellar "disk." We suggest that bipolar structures are probably more common than actually observed, because objects with similar intrinsic structures may simply appear stellar because of their orientation in the sky.

IRAS low-resolution spectra were extracted for 11,224 IRAS sources. These spectra were classified into astrophysical classes, based on the presence of emission and absorption features and on the shape of the continuum. Counterparts of these IRAS sources in existing optical and infrared catalogs are identified, and their optical spectral types are listed if they are known. The correlations between the photospheric/optical and circumstellar/infrared classification are discussed.

A model to simulate the entire spectrum (1000 A to 1 cm) of the high-excitation young planetary nebula NGC 7027 is presented. The ionized, dust, and molecular components of the object are modeled using geometric parameters obtained from visible, radio, infrared, and CO data. The physical processes considered include recombination lines of H and He, collisional excited lines of metals, bf and ff continuum radiations, two-photon radiation, dust continuum radiation, and molecular rotational and vibrational transitions. The dust component is assumed to be heated by a combination of direct starlight and the line and continuum radiation from the ionized nebula. The molecular component of the nebula is coupled to the dust component through the stimulated absorption of the dust continuum radiation. Specifically, we compare the predicted fluxes of the CO rotational lines and the 179.5 μm water rotational line to those observed by the Infrared Space Observatory satellite (Liu et al. 1996, A&A in press).

We present an analysis and comparison of the 30 µm dust feature in the spectra of carbon-rich objects located in the Milky Way, Magellanic Clouds and the Sagittarius dwarf spheroidal galaxy. These spectra were collected by Spitzer Space Telescope. All of these galaxies are characterized by the different metallicities. We expect that some physical and chemical processes related to the formation of the feature are a function of the metallicity. Our study should allow us to better understand the mass loss process and thus late stages of stellar evolution of carbon-rich stars in these four galaxies. Our analysis uses the "Manchester method" as a basis of estimating the temperature of dust for the carbon-rich stars and the planetary nebulae in our sample. In the case of post-AGB objects we changed the spectral ranges used for the temperature estimation, because of the presence of the 21 µm feature. We used a blackbody function with a single temperature deduced from the Manchester method to approximate the continuum under the 30 µm feature. We have produced on-line catalogues of photometric and Spitzer IRS spectra for all objects that show the 30 µm feature. These resources are available on-line for use by the community.

High-resolution HST imaging of the compact planetary nebula NGC 6644 has revealed two pairs of bipolar lobes and a central ring lying close to the plane of the sky. From mid-infrared imaging obtained with the Gemini Telescope, we have found a dust torus which is oriented nearly perpendicular to one pair of the lobes. We suggest that NGC 6644 is a multipolar nebula and have constructed a 3-D model which allows the visualization of the object from different lines of sight. These results suggest that NGC 6644 may have similar intrinsic structures as other multipolar nebulae and the phenomenon of multipolar nebulosity may be more common than previously believed., 31 pages, 13 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

We present a 2Dust model for the dust shell around a LMC long-period variable (LPV) previously studied as part of the OGLE survey. OGLE LMC LPV 28579 (SAGE J051306.40-690946.3) is a carbon-rich asymptotic giant branch (AGB) star for which we have photometry and spectra from the Spitzer SAGE and SAGE-Spec programs along with UBVIJHK_s photometry. By modeling this source, we obtain a baseline set of dust properties to be used in the construction of a grid of models for carbon stars. We reproduce its spectral energy distribution using a mixture of AmC and SiC (15% by mass). The grain sizes are distributed according to the KMH model. The best-fit model has an optical depth of 0.28 for the shell at the peak of the SiC feature, with R_in~1430 R_sun or 4.4 R_star. The temperature at this inner radius is 1310 K. Assuming an expansion velocity of 10 km s^-1, we obtain a dust mass-loss rate of 2.5x10^-9 M_sun yr-1. We calculate a 15% variation in this rate by testing the fit sensitivity against variation in input parameters. We also present a simple model for the molecular gas in the extended atmosphere that could give rise to the 13.7 \mu m feature seen in the spectrum. We find that a combination of CO and C_2H_2 gas at an excitation temperature of about 1000 K and column densities of 3x10^21 cm^-2 and 10^19 cm^-2 respectively are able to reproduce the observations. Given that the excitation temperature is close to T_dust(R_in), most of the molecular contribution probably arises from the inner shell region. The luminosity corresponding to the first epoch of SAGE observations is 6580 L_sun. For an effective temperature of about 3000 K, this implies a stellar mass of 1.5-2 M_sun and an age of 1-2.5 Gyr. For a gas:dust ratio of 200, we obtain a gas mass-loss rate of 5.0x10^-7 M_sun yr^-1, consistent with the gas mass-loss rates estimated from the period, color and 8 \mu m flux of the source., Comment: 14 pages, 5 figures, accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics

The SAGE-Spec Spitzer Legacy program is a spectroscopic follow-up to the SAGE-LMC photometric survey of the Large Magellanic Cloud carried out with the Spitzer Space Telescope. We present an overview of SAGE-Spec and some of its first results. The SAGE-Spec program aims to study the life cycle of gas and dust in the Large Magellanic Cloud, and to provide information essential to the classification of the point sources observed in the earlier SAGE-LMC photometric survey. We acquired 224.6 hours of observations using the InfraRed Spectrograph and the SED mode of the Multiband Imaging Photometer for Spitzer. The SAGE-Spec data, along with archival Spitzer spectroscopy of objects in the Large Magellanic Cloud, are reduced and delivered to the community. We discuss the observing strategy, the specific data reduction pipelines applied and the dissemination of data products to the scientific community. Initial science results include the first detection of an extragalactic "21 um" feature towards an evolved star and elucidation of the nature of disks around RV Tauri stars in the Large Magellanic Cloud. Towards some young stars, ice features are observed in absorption. We also serendipitously observed a background quasar, at a redshift of z~0.14, which appears to be host-less., 33 pages, 12 figures, 8 tables; accepted for publication by PASP

The goal of this paper is to present the results of a preliminary analysis of the extended infrared (IR) emission by dust in the interstellar medium (ISM) of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). We combine Spitzer Surveying the Agents of Galaxy Evolution (SAGE) and Infrared Astronomical Satellite (IRAS) data and correlate the infrared emission with gas tracers of H I, CO, and Hα. We present a global analysis of the infrared emission as well as detailed modeling of the spectral energy distribution (SED) of a few selected regions. Extended emission by dust associated with the neutral, molecular, and diffuse ionized phases of the ISM is detected at all IR bands from 3.6 μm to 160 μm. The relative abundance of the various dust species appears quite similar to that in the Milky Way (MW) in all the regions we have modeled. We construct maps of the temperature of large dust grains. The temperature map shows variations in the range 12.1-34.7 K, with a systematic gradient from the inner to outer regions, tracing the general distribution of massive stars and individual H II regions as well as showing warmer dust in the stellar bar. This map is used to derive the far-infrared (FIR) optical depth of large dust grains. We find two main departures in the LMC with respect to expectations based on the MW: (1) excess mid-infrared (MIR) emission near 70 μm, referred to as the 70 μm excess, and (2) departures from linear correlation between the FIR optical depth and the gas column density, which we refer to as FIR excess emission. The 70 μm excess increases gradually from the MW to the LMC to the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC), suggesting evolution with decreasing metallicity. The excess is associated with the neutral and diffuse ionized gas, with the strongest excess region located in a loop structure next to 30 Dor. We show that the 70 μm excess can be explained by a modification of the size distribution of very small grains with respect to that in the MW, and a corresponding mass increase of ≃13% of the total dust mass in selected regions. The most likely explanation is that the 70 μm excess is due to the production of large very small grains (VSG) through erosion of larger grains in the diffuse medium. This FIR excess could be due to intrinsic variations of the dust/gas ratio, which would then vary from 4.6 to 2.3 times lower than the MW values across the LMC, but X_(CO) values derived from the IR emission would then be about three times lower than those derived from the Virial analysis of the CO data. We also investigate the possibility that the FIR excess is associated with an additional gas component undetected in the available gas tracers. Assuming a constant dust abundance in all ISM phases, the additional gas component would have twice the known H I mass. We show that it is plausible that the FIR excess is due to cold atomic gas that is optically thick in the 21 cm line, while the contribution by a pure H_2 phase with no CO emission remains a possible explanation.

The evolution of the IR spectra of asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars has been obtained by time-dependent radiative transfer models. These models are compared with IRAS photometric and spectroscopic observations. Extrapolation of the models to beyond the AGB lead to predictions of the spectra of proto-planetary nebulae. Candidates of protoplanetary nebulae have been successfully found from these predictions.
