Aims: Massive stars in low-metallicity environments may produce exotic explosions such as long-duration gamma-ray bursts and pair-instability supernovae when they die as core-collapse supernovae (CCSNe). Here we determine the feasibility of searching for these CCSNe in metal-poor dwarf galaxies using various survey strategies. Methods: We determine oxygen abundances and star-formation rates for all spectroscopically typed star-forming galaxies in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey, Data Release 5, within z = 0.04. We then estimate the CCSN rates for sub-samples of galaxies with differing upper-metallicity limits. Using Monte-Carlo simulations we then predict the fraction of these CCSNe that we can expect to detect using different survey strategies. Results: Using a single 2m telescope (with a standard CCD camera) search we predict a detection rate of ~1.3 CCSNe/yr in galaxies with metallicities below 12 + log(O/H) < 8.2 which are within a volume that will allow detailed follow-up with 4m and 8m telescopes (z = 0.04). With a network of seven 2m telescopes we estimate ~9.3 CCSNe/yr could be found, although this would require more than 1,000 hrs of telescope time allocated to the network. Within the same radial distance, a volume-limited search in the future Pan-STARRS PS1 all-sky survey should uncover 12.5 CCSNe/yr in low-metallicity galaxies. Over a period of a few years this would allow a detailed comparison of their properties. We then extend our calculations to determine the total numbers of CCSNe that can potentially be found in magnitude-limited surveys with PS1 (24,000/yr, within z < 0.6), PS4 (69,000/yr, within z < 0.8) and LSST (160,000/yr, within z < 0.9) surveys., Comment: Accepted by journal Astronomy & Astrophysics

We calculate the one-photon loop radiative corrections to charged pion Compton scattering, $\pi^- \gamma \to \pi^- \gamma $. Ultraviolet and infrared divergencies are both treated in dimensional regularization. Analytical expressions for the ${\cal O}(\alpha)$ corrections to the invariant Compton scattering amplitudes, $A(s,u)$ and $B(s,u)$, are presented for 11 classes of contributing one-loop diagrams. Infrared finiteness of the virtual radiative corrections is achieved (in the standard way) by including soft photon radiation below an energy threshold $\lambda$, and its relation to the experimental detection threshold is discussed. We find that the radiative corrections are maximal in backward directions, reaching e.g. -2.4% for a center-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s}=4m_\pi$ and $\lambda=5 $MeV. Furthermore, we extend our calculation of the radiative corrections by including the leading pion structure effect (at low energies) in form of its electric and magnetic polarizability difference, $\alpha_\pi - \beta_\pi \simeq 6\cdot 10^{-4} $fm$^3$. We find that this structure effect does not change the relative size and angular dependence of the radiative corrections to pion Compton scattering. Our results are particularly relevant for analyzing the COMPASS experiment at CERN which aims at measuring the pion electric and magnetic polarizabilities with high statistics using the Primakoff effect., Comment: 14 pages, 5 figures

The evolution of the B-band galaxy luminosity function is measured using a sample of more than 11,000 galaxies with spectroscopic redshifts from the DEEP2 Redshift Survey. The rest-frame M_B versus U-B color-magnitude diagram of DEEP2 galaxies shows that the color-magnitude bi-modality seen in galaxies locally is still present at redshifts z > 1. Dividing the sample at the trough of this color bimodality into predominantly red and blue galaxies, we find that the luminosity function of each galaxy color type evolves differently. Blue counts tend to shift to brighter magnitudes at constant number density, while the red counts remain largely constant at a fixed absolute magnitude. Using Schechter functions with fixed faint-end slopes we find that M*_B for blue galaxies brightens by ~ 1.3 magnitudes per unit redshift, with no significant evolution in number density. For red galaxies M*_B brightens somewhat less with redshift, while the formal value of phi* declines. The DEEP2 and COMBO-17 surveys are used to study the evolution of the luminosity function of red and blue galaxies to $z \sim 1$. Schechter function fits show that, since $z = 1$, $M^*_B$ dims by $\sim$ 1.3 mag per unit redshift for both color classes, $\phi^*$ of blue galaxies shows little change, while $\phi^*$ for red galaxies has formally nearly quadrupled. At face value, the number density of blue galaxies has remained roughly constant since $ z = 1$, whereas that of red galaxies has been rising. Luminosity densities support both conclusions, but we note that most red-galaxy evolution occurs between our data and local surveys and in our highest redshift bin, where the data are weakest. We discuss the implications of having most red galaxies emerge after $z = 1$ from precursors among the blue population, taking into account the properties of local and distant E/S0s. We suggest a ``mixed'' scenario in which some blue galaxies have their star-formation quenched in gas-rich mergers, migrate to the red sequence with a variety of masses, and merge further on the red sequence in one or more purely stellar mergers. We present our image processing system for the reduction of optical imaging data from multi-chip cameras. In the framework of the Garching Bonn Deep Survey (GaBoDS; Schirmer et al. 2003) consisting of about 20 square degrees of high-quality data from WFI@MPG/ESO 2.2m, our group developed an imaging pipeline for the homogeneous and efficient processing of this large data set. Having weak gravitational lensing as the main science driver, our algorithms are optimised to produce deep co-added mosaics from individual exposures obtained from empty field observations. However, the modular design of our pipeline allows an easy adaption to different scientific applications. Our system has already been ported to a large variety of optical instruments and its products have been used in various scientific contexts. In this paper we give a thorough description of the algorithms used and a careful evaluation of the accuracies reached. This concerns the removal of the instrumental signature, the astrometric alignment, photometric calibration and the characterisation of final co-added mosaics. We present photometric and spectroscopic observations of 23 high redshift supernovae spanning a range of z=0.34-1.03, 9 of which are unambiguously classified as Type Ia. These supernovae were discovered during the IfA Deep Survey, which began in September 2001 and observed a total of 2.5 square degrees to a depth of approximately m=25-26 in RIZ over 9-17 visits, typically every 1-3 weeks for nearly 5 months, with additional observations continuing until April 2002. We give a brief description of the survey motivations, observational strategy, and reduction process. This sample of 23 high-redshift supernovae includes 15 at z>0.7, doubling the published number of objects at these redshifts, and indicates that the evidence for acceleration of the universe is not due to a systematic effect proportional to redshift. In combination with the recent compilation of Tonry et al. (2003), we calculate cosmological parameter density contours which are consistent with the flat universe indicated by the CMB (Spergel et al. 2003). Adopting the constraint that Omega_total = 1.0, we obtain best-fit values of (Omega_m, Omega_Lambda)=(0.33, 0.67) using 22 SNe from this survey augmented by the literature compilation. We show that using the empty-beam model for gravitational lensing does not eliminate the need for Omega_Lambda > 0. We use weak lensing shear measurements of six z>0.5 clusters of galaxies to derive the mean lensing redshift of the background galaxies used to measure the shear. Five of these clusters are compared to X-ray mass models and verify a mean lensing redshift for a 23

The Galactic Exoplanet Survey Telescope (GEST) will observe a 2 square degree field in the Galactic bulge to search for extra-solar planets using a gravitational lensing technique. This gravitational lensing technique is the only method employing currently available technology that can detect Earth-mass planets at high signal-to-noise, and can measure the frequency of terrestrial planets as a function of Galactic position. GEST's sensitivity extends down to the mass of Mars, and it can detect hundreds of terrestrial planets with semi-major axes ranging from 0.7 AU to infinity. GEST will be the first truly comprehensive survey of the Galaxy for planets like those in our own Solar System., Comment: 17 pages with 13 figures, to be published in Proc. The DEIMOS spectrograph has now been installed on the Keck-II telescope and commissioning is nearly complete. The DEEP2 Redshift Survey, which will take approximately 120 nights at the Keck Observatory over a three year period and has been designed to utilize the power of DEIMOS, began in the summer of 2002. The multiplexing power and high efficiency of DEIMOS enables us to target 1000 faint galaxies per clear night. Our goal is to gather high-quality spectra of \~60,000 galaxies with z>0.75 in order to study the properties and large scale clustering of galaxies at z ~ 1. The survey will be executed at high spectral resolution, $R=\lambda/\Delta \lambda \approx 5000$, allowing us to work between the bright OH sky emission lines and to infer linewidths for many of the target galaxies (for several thousand objects, we will obtain rotation curves as well). The linewidth data will facilitate the execution of the classical redshift-volume cosmological test, which can provide a precision measurement of the equation of state of the Universe. In the course of a weak gravitational lensing survey of 39 clusters of galaxies,covering a total sky area of ~1 square degree, we have serendipitously discovered mass concentrations in the fields of A1705 and A1722 which are most probably not associated with the main cluster target. By combining weak lensing information with two-color galaxy photometry in fields centered on our sample clusters, we identify a new cluster candidate at z~0.5 in the field of A1705. This cluster candidate also displays strong lensing in the form of a giant luminous arc. The new mass concentration in the field of A1722 also seems to be associated with an optically luminous cluster of galaxies at z~0.5, but in this case there is some evidence for additional structures along the line of sight that may contribute to the lensing signal. A third cluster, A959, has a dark sub-clump which shows interesting morphological evidence in the mass map for being associated with the main cluster. This is the first case where there is any significant evidence for a physical association between a dark sub-clump (discovered from weak lensing) and a normal cluster. We present the results of a weak lensing survey of six high-redshift (z > 0.5), X-ray selected clusters of galaxies. We have obtained ultra-deep R-band images of each cluster with the Keck Telescope, and have measured a weak lensing signal from each cluster. From the background galaxy ellipticities we create two-dimensional maps of the surface mass density of each cluster. We find that the substructure seen in the mass reconstructions typically agree well with substructure in both the cluster galaxy distributions and X-ray images of the clusters. We also measure the one-dimensional radial profiles of the lensing signals and fit these with both isothermal spheres and "universal" CDM profiles. We propose a new strategy for obtaining enhanced resolution (FWHM = 0.12 arcsec) deep optical images over a wide field of view. As is well known, this type of image quality can be obtained in principle simply by fast guiding on a small (D = 1.5m) telescope at a good site, but only for target objects which lie within a limited angular distance of a suitably bright guide star. For high altitude turbulence this 'isokinetic angle' is approximately 1 arcminute. With a 1 degree field say one would need to track and correct the motions of thousands of isokinetic patches, yet there are typically too few sufficiently bright guide stars to provide the necessary guiding information. Our proposed solution to these problems has two novel features. The first is to use orthogonal transfer charge-coupled device (OTCCD) technology to effectively implement a wide field 'rubber focal plane' detector composed of an array of cells which can be guided independently. The second is to combine measured motions of a set of guide stars made with an array of telescopes to provide the extra information needed to fully determine the deflection field. We present results of a weak gravitational lensing survey of six X-ray selected high-redshift clusters of galaxies. We find that the masses of the clusters derived from weak lensing are comparable to those derived from the X-ray observations. We describe in detail the processing of a set of images of the z = 0.42 supercluster MS0302 taken with the UH8K camera at CFHT. The result of this is a pair of seamless combined V- and I-band images of the field, along with a characterization of the noise properties and of the point spread function (PSF), and catalogs of about 30,000 faint galaxies. The analysis involves the following steps: image preparation; detection of stars and registration to find the transformation from detector to sky coordinates; correction for extinction and/or gain variations; modeling of the PSF; generation of images with a circular PSF; image warping and averaging; modeling of the noise auto-correlation function; faint object detection, aperture photometry, and shape measurement. We describe the 2dF Galaxy Redshift Survey (2dFGRS), and the current status of the observations. In this exploratory paper, we apply a Principal Component Analysis to a preliminary sample of 5869 galaxy spectra and use the two most significant components to split the sample into five spectral classes. These classes are defined by considering visual classifications of a subset of the 2dF spectra, and also by comparing to high quality spectra of local galaxies. We calculate a luminosity function for each of the different classes and find that later-type galaxies have a fainter characteristic magnitude, and a steeper faint-end slope. For the whole sample we find M*=-19.7 (for Omega=1, H_0=100 km/sec/Mpc), alpha=-1.3, phi*=0.017. For class 1 (`early-type') we find M*=-19.6, alpha=-0.7, while for class 5 (`late-type') we find M*=-19.0, alpha=-1.7. We perform a weak lensing and photometric study of the z=0.42 supercluster MS0302+17 using deep I and V band images taken with the UH8K CCD mosaic camera at the CFHT. We use archival ROSAT HRI data to estimate fluxes, gas masses and, in one case, the binding mass of the three major clusters. We then use our CCD data to determine the optical richness and luminosities of the clusters and to map out the spatial distribution of the early type galaxies in the supercluster and in other foreground and background structures. We measure the gravitational shear from a sample of \simeq 30,000 faint background galaxies in the range 22 < m_I < 26 and find this correlates strongly with that predicted from the early type galaxies if they trace the mass with M/L_B \simeq 250 h. We make 2-dimensional reconstructions of the mass surface density. These recover all of the major concentrations of galaxies and indicate that most of the supercluster mass, like the early type galaxies, is concentrated in the three X-ray clusters, and we obtain mean mass-to-light ratios for the clusters of M/L_B \simeq 260 h. Cross-correlation of the measured mass surface density with that predicted from the early type galaxy distribution shows a strong peak at zero lag (significant at the \simeq 9-sigma level), and that at separations \gsim 200 h^{-1}$kpc the early galaxies trace the mass very accurately. This conclusion is supported by cross-correlation in Fourier space; we see little evidence for any variation of M/L or `bias' with scale, and from the longest wavelength modes with \lambda = 1.5-6 h^{-1}Mpc we find M/L \simeq (280 \pm 40)h, quite similar to that obtained for the cluster centers. We report the detection of weak gravitational lensing of distant background galaxies by two rich, X-ray luminous clusters of galaxies, MS 1137+66 at z=0.783 and RXJ 1716+67 at z=0.813. We report on the detection of dark matter in the cluster of galaxies Abell~2163 using the weak gravitational distortion of background galaxies, and an analysis of the cluster X-ray emission. We find that while the qualitative distributions of the cluster light and the dark matter are similar -- shallow and extended, with significant substructure -- the X-ray morphology shows a more regular overall appearance. We interpret the joint lensing and X-ray observations as a signature of a merger event in the cluster. We present new ROSAT/HRI data and reanalyze ROSAT/PSPC data, accounting for the effect of a varying background to determine the best fit parameters in the $\beta$-model formalism. We combine the surface brightness fits with two determinations of the radial temperature profile to determine the total mass. Although there are slight variations in the total mass determinations introduced by the uncertainties in the $\beta$-fit, the main contributor to the error arises from the uncertainties in the temperature determinations. Even though the morphologies of the dark matter/light and X-ray gas are quite different, we find that the total mass determined from the X-ray and weak lensing estimates are consistent with each other within the $2\sigma$ error bars, with the X-ray inferred mass a factor of $\simeq 2$ larger. However, as the lensing mass estimates are differential (the surface density at any point is determined relative to the mean in a control annulus), the shallow, extended nature of the mass profile biases the lensing inferred mass downwards. We estimate the correction for this effect and find very good agreement between the corrected lensing and X-ray results. We determine the gas mass fraction and find $f_g \simeq 0.07h^{-3/2}$ at all radii and a constant mass-to-light ratio of $M/L_V, Comment: 30 pages, latex file. We report on the detection of dark matter in the cluster Abell 2390 using the weak gravitational distortion of background galaxies. We find that the cluster light and total mass distributions are quite similar over an angular scale of $\simeq 7^\prime \;(1 \Mpc$). The cluster galaxy and mass distributions are centered on the cluster cD galaxy and exhibit elliptical isocontours in the central $\simeq 2^\prime \; (280 \kpc)$. The major axis of the ellipticity is aligned with the direction defined by the cluster cD and a ``straight arc'' located $\simeq 38^{\prime\prime}$ to the northwest. We determined the radial mass-to-light profile for this cluster and found a constant value of $(320 \pm 90) h\; M_\odot/L_{\odot V}$, which is consistent with other published determinations. We also compared our weak lensing azimuthally averaged radial mass profile with a spherical mass model proposed by the CNOC group on the basis of their detailed dynamical study of the cluster. We find good agreement between the two profiles, although there are weak indications that the CNOC density profile may be falling more steeply for $\theta\geq 3^\prime$ $(420\kpc)$., Comment: 14 pages, latex file. We report on the detection of dark matter in the cluster Abell 2218 using the weak gravitational distortion of background galaxies. We find a highly significant, coherent detection of the distortion in the images of the background galaxies. The inferred 2D mass distribution has a peak that is coincident with the optical and X-ray centroid. The qualitative distributions of the cluster light, the X-ray emission and the dark matter are similar and the projected total mass, gas, and light surface densities are consistent with a $r^{-1}$ profile at distance of $r > 180^{\prime\prime}$ from the cluster cD galaxy. Using the weak lensing technique, we determine a lower bound for the total mass in A2218 of $(3.9 \pm 0.7) \times 10^{14}$~h$^{-1}$~M$_\odot$ within a fiducial aperture of radius 0.4~h$^{-1}$Mpc. The associated cluster mass-to-light ratio is $(440 \pm 80)$~h~$M_\odot/L_{\odot B}$. The mass estimated by the weak lensing method is consistent with that inferred from the X-ray data under the assumption of hydrostatic equilibrium and we derive an upper bound for the gas-to-total mass ratio at 400~h$^{-1}$kpc of $M_{gas}/M_{tot} = (0.04 \pm 0.02)$h$^{-3/2}$., Comment: 25 pages, Latex, no figures. We apply a likelihood analysis to the data of \markcite{Lauer \& Postman 1994} With $P(k)$ parametrized by $(\sigma_8, \Gamma)$, the likelihood function peaks at $\sigma_8\simeq0.3$, $\Gamma\lesssim0.025$, indicating at face value very strong large-scale power, though at a level incompatible with COBE\@. There is, however, a ridge of likelihood such that more conventional power spectra do not seem strongly disfavored. The likelihood calculated using as data only the components of the bulk flow solution peaks at higher $\sigma_8$, in agreement with other analyses, but is rather broad. The likelihood incorporating both bulk flow and shear gives a different picture. The components of the shear are all low, and this pulls the peak to lower amplitudes as a compromise. The Lauer \& Postman velocity data alone are therefore {\em consistent}\/ with models with very strong large scale power which generates a large bulk flow, but the small shear (which also probes fairly large scales) requires that the power would have to be at {\em very}\/ large scales, which is strongly disfavored by COBE\@. The velocity data also seem compatible with more conventional $P(k)$ with $0.2\lesssim\Gamma\lesssim0.5$, and the likelihood is peaked around $\sigma_8\sim1$, in which case the bulk flow is a moderate, but not extreme, statistical fluctuation. Applying the same techniques to the data of \markcite{Riess, Press, \& Kirshner 1995}, the results are quite different. The flow is not inconsistent with the microwave dipole and we derive only an upper limit to the amplitude of the power spectrum: $\sigma_8\lesssim1.5$ at roughly 99\%., Comment: uuencoded, gzipped postscript. We investigate the production of dark matter with non-standard momentum distributions arising from the decay of a relativistic massive neutrino into a lighter fermion and boson H$\rightarrow$F$+$B. We develop the Boltzmann equations for this process, paying particular attention to spin polarisation effects. Such decays can, under certain circumstances, lead to a process of runaway stimulated decays or `neutrino-lasing' resulting, for suitable boson mass, in the production of mixed-dark-matter. We discuss a number of variations on the model; we show how the yield of cold particles can be increased by a simple modification to our original proposal. Recently, Madsen has argued that relativistic decays of massive neutrinos into lighter fermions and bosons may lead, via thermalization, to the formation of a Bose condensate. If correct, this could generate mixed hot and cold dark matter, with important consequences for structure formation. From a detailed study of such decays, we arrive at substantially different conclusions; for a wide range of masses and decay times, we find that stimulated emission of bosons dominates the decay. This phenomenon can best be described as a neutrino laser, pumped by the QCD phase transition. We present the selection and classification of over a thousand ultraviolet (UV) variable sources discovered in approximately 40 deg(exp 2) of GALEX Time Domain Survey (TDS) NUV images observed with a cadence of 2 days and a baseline of observations of approximately 3 years. The GALEX TDS fields were designed to be in spatial and temporal coordination with the Pan-STARRS1 Medium Deep Survey, which provides deep optical imaging and simultaneous optical transient detections via image differencing. We characterize the GALEX photometric errors empirically as a function of mean magnitude, and select sources that vary at the 5 sigma level in at least one epoch. We measure the statistical properties of the UV variability, including the structure function on timescales of days and years. We report classifications for the GALEX TDS sample using a combination of optical host colors and morphology, UV light curve characteristics, and matches to archival X-ray, and spectroscopy catalogs. We classify 62% of the sources as active galaxies (358 quasars and 305 active galactic nuclei), and 10% as variable stars (including 37 RR Lyrae, 53 M dwarf flare stars, and 2 cataclysmic variables). We detect a large-amplitude tail in the UV variability distribution for M-dwarf flare stars and RR Lyrae, reaching up to absolute value(Δm) = 4.6 mag and 2.9 mag, respectively. The mean amplitude of the structure function for quasars on year timescales is five times larger than observed at optical wavelengths. The remaining unclassified sources include UV-bright extragalactic transients, two of which have been spectroscopically confirmed to be a young core-collapse supernova and a flare from the tidal disruption of a star by dormant supermassive black hole. We calculate a surface density for variable sources in the UV with NUV less than 23 mag and absolute value(Δm) greater than 0.2 mag of approximately 8.0, 7.7, and 1.8 deg(exp −2) for quasars, active galactic nuclei, and RR Lyrae stars, respectively. We also calculate a surface density rate in the UV for transient sources, using the effective survey time at the cadence appropriate to each class, of approximately 15 and 52 deg(exp −2 yr−1 for M dwarfs and extragalactic transients, respectively.

It is pointed out that most schemes for determining the mass function of virialized objects from the statistics of the initial density perturbation field suffer from the cloud-in-cloud problem of miscounting the number of low-mass clumps, many of which would have been subsumed into larger objects. The paper proposes a solution based on the theory of the excursion sets of F(r, R sub f), the four-dimensional initial density perturbation field smoothed with a continuous hierarchy of filters of radii R sub f.

A set of new mathematical results on the theory of Gaussian random fields is presented, and the application of such calculations in cosmology to treat questions of structure formation from small-amplitude initial density fluctuations is addressed. The point process equation is discussed, giving the general formula for the average number density of peaks. The problem of the proper conditional probability constraints appropriate to maxima are examined using a one-dimensional illustration. The average density of maxima of a general three-dimensional Gaussian field is calculated as a function of heights of the maxima, and the average density of 'upcrossing' points on density contour surfaces is computed. The number density of peaks subject to the constraint that the large-scale density field be fixed is determined and used to discuss the segregation of high peaks from the underlying mass distribution. The machinery to calculate n-point peak-peak correlation functions is determined, as are the shapes of the profiles about maxima.

High peaks in Gaussian noise display enhanced clustering. The enhancement takes two forms: on large scales one obtains a linear amplification of the correlation function which is independent of scale. On smaller scales, but larger than the mass scale of the peaks themselves, a nonlinear (exponential) enhancement of the number density of high peaks in overdense regions arises. The large-scale correlations of Abell's rich clusters can be understood as a manifestation of this phenomenon. If the formation of bright galaxies favors the high overdensity peaks then the number of galaxies (per unit mass) in clusters and groups may be considerably enhanced. Consequences of these ideas for the density parameter and the large-scale matter distribution are discussed.

It is pointed out that correlation studies of galaxy positions have been widely used in the search for information about the large-scale matter distribution. The study of rare condensations on large scales provides an approach to extend the existing knowledge of large-scale structure into the weakly clustered regime. Shane (1975) provides a description of several apparent massive condensations within the Shane-Wirtanen catalog, taking into account the Serpens-Virgo cloud and the Corona cloud. In the present study, a description is given of a model for estimating the frequency of condensations which evolve from initially Gaussian fluctuations. This model is applied to the Corona cloud to estimate its 'rareness' and thereby estimate the rms density contrast on this mass scale. An attempt is made to find a conflict between the density fluctuations derived from the Corona cloud and independent constraints. A comparison is conducted of the estimate and the density fluctuations predicted to arise in a universe dominated by cold dark matter.

If rich clusters formed where the primordial density enhancement, when averaged over an appropriate volume, was unusually large, then they give a biased measure of the large-scale density correlation function determiend by the probability distribution of the density fluctuations on a rich cluster mass scale. If this distribution was Gaussian, the correlation function is amplified. The amplification for rich clusters is estimated to be eaual about ten and predicted trend of amplification with richness agrees qualitatively with that observed. Some implications of these results for the large-scale density correlations are discussed.
