AIMS. A recent catalogue by Flesch & Hardcastle presents two major anomalies in the spatial distribution of QSO candidates: i/ an apparent excess of such objects near bright galaxies, and ii/ an excess of very bright QSO candidates compared to random background expectations in several regions of the sky. Because anyone of these anomalies would be relevant in a cosmological context, we carried out an extensive analysis of the probabilities quoted in that catalogue. METHODS. We determine the nature and redshift of a subsample of 30 sources in that catalogue by analysing their optical spectra (another 11 candidates were identified from existing public databases). These have allowed us to statistically check the reliability of the probabilities QSO status quoted by Flesch & Hardcastle for their candidates. RESULTS. Only 12 of the 41 candidates turned out QSOs (7 of which have been identified here for the first time). CONCLUSIONS. The probabilities of the QSOs' being the candidates given by Flesch & Hardcastle are overestimated for m_B<17 and for objects projected near (<1 arcmin) bright galaxies. We present observations with the new 11 GHz radiometer of the COSMOSOMAS experiment at the Teide Observatory (Tenerife). The sky region between 0 deg <= RA <= 360 deg and 26 deg <= DEC 49 deg (ca. 6500 square degrees) was observed with an angular resolution of 0.9 deg. Two orthogonal independent channels in the receiving system measured total power signals from linear polarizations with a 2 GHz bandwidth. Maps with an average sensitivity of 50 microK per beam have been obtained for each channel. At high Galactic latitude (|b|>30deg) the 11 GHz data are found to contain the expected cosmic microwave background as well as extragalactic radiosources, galactic synchrotron and free-free emission, and a dust-correlated component which is very likely of galactic origin. At the angular scales allowed by the window function of the experiment, the dust-correlated component presents an amplitude \Delta T aprox. 9-13 microK while the CMB signal is of order 27 microK. The spectral behaviour of the dust-correlated signal is examined in the light of previous COSMOSOMAS data at 13-17 GHz and WMAP data at 22-94 GHz in the same sky region. We detect a flattening in the spectral index of this signal below 20 GHz which rules out synchrotron radiation as being responsible for the emission. This anomalous dust emission can be described by a combination of free-free emission and spinning dust models with a flux density peaking around 20 GHz., Comment: 17 pages, 10 tables, 20 figures. AIMS. To check whether the polar angle distribution of QSOs around nearby spiral galaxies is isotropic or not. METHODS. A statistical analysis of the polar angle distribution of large samples of QSOs from the SDSS survey and Monte Carlo simulations to calculate their significance are carried out. RESULTS. There is a clear excess of QSOs near the minor axis with respect to the major axis of nearby edge-on spiral galaxies, significant at a level 3.5-sigma up to angular distances of 3 deg. (or ~1.7 Mpc) from the centre of each galaxy. The significance is increased to 3.9-sigma with the z>0.5 QSOs, and it reaches 4.8-sigma if we include galaxies whose circles of radius 3 degrees are covered by the SDSS in more than 98% (instead of 100%) of the area. CONCLUSIONS. Gravitational lensing in the halo of nearby galaxies or extinction seem insufficient to explain the observed anisotropic distribution of QSOs. The anisotropic distribution agrees qualitatively with the predictions of Arp's models, which claim that QSOs are ejected by galaxies along the rotation axis, although Arp's prediction give a distance of the QSOs ~3 times smaller than that found here. In any case, a chance fluctuation, although highly improbable, might be a possibility rather than a true anisotropy, and the present results should be corroborated by other groups and samples, so we prefer to consider it as just a first tentative detection., Comment: 16 pages, accepted to be published in A&A

We present narrow-band observations of the H$\alpha$ emission in a sample of 31 satellite orbiting isolated giant spiral galaxies. The sample studied spans the range $-19

The anomalous microwave emission detected in the Perseus molecular complex by Watson \ea has been observed at 11 GHz through dual orthogonal polarizations with the COSMOSOMAS experiment. Stokes U and Q maps were obtained at a resolution of \sim 0.9deg. for a 30deg. X 30deg. region including the Perseus molecular complex. A faint polarized emission has been measured; we find Q=-0.2 % \pm1.0%, while U=-3.4^{+1.8}_{-1.4}% both at the 95% confidence level with a systematic uncertainty estimated to be lower than 1% determined from tests of the instrumental performance using unpolarized sources in our map as null hypothesis. The resulting total polarization level is \Pi = 3.4^{+1.5}_{-1.9}%. These are the first constraints on the polarization properties of an anomalous microwave emission source. The low level of polarization seems to indicate that the particles responsible for this emission in the Perseus molecular complex are not significantly aligned in a common direction over the whole region, as a consequence of either a high structural symmetry in the emitting particle or a low-intensity magnetic field. Our weak detection is fully consistent with predictions from electric dipole emission and resonance relaxation at this frequency., Comment: 11 pages, 1 figure, accepted ApJL. CONTEXT. Observational follow-up programmes for the characterization of ultra-luminous X-ray sources (ULXs) require the construction of clean samples of such sources in which the contamination by foreground/background sources is minimum. AIMS. In this article we calculate the degree of foreground/background contaminants among the ULX sample candidates in the Colbert & Ptak (2002) catalogue and compare these computations with available spectroscopical identifications. METHODS. We use statistics based on known densities of X-ray sources and AGN/QSOs selected in the optical. The analysis is done individually for each parent galaxy. The existing identifications of the optical counterparts are compiled from the literature. RESULTS. More than a half of the ULXs, within twice the distance of the major axis of the 25 mag/arcsec$^2$ isophote from RC3 nearby galaxies and with X-ray luminosities $L_X$[2-10 keV] $\ge 10^{39}$ erg/s, are expected to be high redshift background QSOs. A list of 25 objects (clean sample) confirmed to be real ULXs or to have a low probability of being contaminant foreground/background objects is provided., Comment: 9 pages, accepted in A&A

(Abridged) We present the analysis of the first 18 months of data obtained with the COSMOSOMAS experiment at the Teide Observatory (Tenerife). Three maps have been obtained at 12.7, 14.7 and 16.3 GHz covering 9000 square degrees each with a resolution of ~1 degree and with sensitivities 49, 59 and 115 muK per beam respectively. These data in conjuction with the WMAP first year maps have revealed that the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) is the dominant astronomical signal at high galatic latitude in the three COSMOSOMAS channels with an average amplitude of 29.7+/- 1.0 \muK (68% c.l. not including calibration errors). This value is in agreement with the predicted CMB signal in the COSMOSOMAS maps using the best fit Lambda-CDM model to the WMAP power spectrum. Cross-correlation of COSMOSOMAS data with the DIRBE map at 100 \mu m shows the existence of a common signal with amplitude 7.4+/- 1.1, 7.5+/- 1.1, and 6.5+/-2.3 muK in the 12.7, 14.7 and 16.3 GHz COSMOSOMAS maps at |b|>30^\deg. Using the WMAP data we find this DIRBE correlated signal rises from high to low frequencies flattening below ~20 GHz. At higher galactic latitudes the average amplitude of the correlated signal with the DIRBE maps decreases slightly. The frequency behaviour of the COSMOSOMAS/WMAP correlated signal with DIRBE is not compatible with the expected tendency for thermal dust. A study of the H-alpha emission maps do not support free-free as a major contributor to that signal. Our results provide evidence of a new galactic foreground with properties compatible with those predicted by the spinning dust models., Comment: 11 pages, 21 figures. Submitted to MNRAS. (Abridged:) The paradox of apparent optical associations of galaxies with very different redshifts, the so-called anomalous redshift problem, is around 35 years old, but is still without a clear solution and is surprisingly ignored by most of the astronomical community. Statistical correlations among the positions of these galaxies have been pointed out by several authors. Gravitational lensing by dark matter has been proposed as the cause of these correlations, although this seems to be insufficient to explain them and does not work at all for correlations with the brightest and nearest galaxies. Some of these cases may be just fortuitous associations in which background objects are close in the sky to a foreground galaxy, although the statistical mean correlations remain to be explained and some lone objects have very small probabilities of being a projection of background objects. The sample of discordant redshift associations given in Arp's atlas is indeed quite large, and most of the objects remain to be analysed thoroughly. For about 5 years, we have been running a project to observe some of these cases in detail, and some new anomalies have been added to those already known; For instance, in some exotic configurations such as NGC 7603 or NEQ3, which can even show bridges connecting four object with very different redshifts. Not only QSOs but also emission-line galaxies in general are found to take part in this kind of event. We present direct evidence for anomalous microwave emission in the Perseus molecular cloud, which shows a clear rising spectrum from 11 to 17 GHz in the data of the COSMOSOMAS experiment. By extending the frequency coverage using WMAP maps convolved with the COSMOSOMAS scanning pattern we reveal a peak flux density of 42 (+/-) 4 Jy at 22 GHz integrated over an extended area of 1.65 x 1.0 deg centered on RA = 55.4 (+/-) 0.1 deg and Dec = 31.8 (+/-) 0.1 deg (J2000). The flux density that we measure at this frequency is nearly an order of magnitude higher than can be explained in terms of normal galactic emission processes (synchrotron, free-free and thermal dust). An extended IRAS dust feature G159.6-18.5 is found near this position and no bright unresolved source which could be an ultracompact HII region or gigahertz peaked source could be found. An adequate fit for the spectral density distribution can be achieved from 10 to 50 GHz by including a very significant contribution from electric dipole emission from small spinning dust grains., Comment: 5 pages, 2 postscript figures, accepted ApJ Lett

We present spectroscopic observations of six optical counterparts of intermediate luminosity X-ray sources (ULXs) around nearby galaxies. The spectra of the six objects show the presence of broad emission features. The identification of these allow us to classify all of the objects as quasars at higher redshift than their assigned parent galaxy. This is one of the first and largest identifications of such objects using unambigous optical spectral features. These results, in conjuction with previous similar identifications of other sources, indicate that high redshift quasars represent an important fraction of catalogued ULX sources. We estimate the density of such sources and compare this with expectations for a population of randomly distributed background quasars., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ Letters

Distant clusters of galaxies provide a powerful method to study the formation and evolution of galaxies, and large scale structure of the Universe. However, the number of known clusters at high redshift (z> 0.5) is still very reduced. As a preparatory work for detailed studies wigh GTC, we are searching for high redshift clusters in public wide optical surveys. We will complement this with near IR observations in 4 m telescopes. Here, we present some preliminary results. We summarize our work on structures in different stages of aggregation, and spanning a wide range in redshift. We emphasize our work on high resdhift clusters. This comprises the analysis of ~7 square degrees using deep images with several broad-band optical filters. We plan to complement these with near IR observations in 4 m telescopes. Preliminary results of the analysis in a field of 35 x 35 arcmin^2 indicate the detection of several candidates to be clusters at redshifst z> 0.5. In this second paper dedicated to the study of satellite galaxies we present broad-band photometry in the B, V, R and I filters of 49 satellite galaxies orbiting giant isolated spiral galaxies. First analysis of the properties of these objects are presented by means of color--color and color--magnitude diagrams for early- and late-type satellites. Although we find differences in the slope of the V-I vs. Mv color magnitude diagram, as a whole, the relations are in agreement with the trends known to date for galaxies of similar magnitudes in nearby clusters of galaxies. Comparison with the relations found for satellites in the Local Group allows us to sample better the bright end of the luminosity function of satellite galaxies and extends for brighter objects the validity of the color--magnitude relation found for dwarf galaxies in the Local Group. Most of the E/S0 galaxies in our sample show a negative color gradient with values similar to those known for early type galaxies in other environments., Comment: 16 pages, 4 figures, Accepted for publication in Astrophys. Spectroscopy and deep imaging of the group NEQ3 are presented. This system is formed by three compact objects with relative separations of ~2.6 and ~2.8 arcsec, and a lenticular galaxy at ~17 arcsec from the geometric centre of the group. A diffuse filament is located on a line joining the three compact objects and the main galaxy. Analysis of these observations confirms the redshift previously known for three of the objects (z=0.1239 for the main galaxy, and z=0.1935 and 0.1939 for two of the compact objects). We have also determined the previously unknown redshift of the third compact object as z=0.2229. Using the relative strength and width of the main spectral lines, we have classified the compact objects as two HII galaxies and one QSO (the object at z=0.1935). With cross-correlation techniques, we have tentatively estimated the redshift of the filament as z=0.19 (although a weaker component also appears at z=0.12) so that it is probably associated with the halo of the two compact objects at this redshift. The two objects at redshift ~0.19 represent possibly one of the more clear examples of starburst (and perhaps QSO activity) driven by interaction. These, and the relation between these two objects and the other two at (~0.12 and ~0.22) make the nature of this system intriguing, being difficult to explain the whole association on conventional scenarios., Comment: 15 pages, 3 figures, ApJ Letter accepted

We present new observations of the field surrounding the Seyfert galaxy NGC 7603, where four galaxies with different redshifts--NGC 7603 (z=0.029), NGC 7603B (z=0.057) and two fainter emission line galaxies (z=0.245 and z=0.394)--are apparently connected by a narrow filament, leading to a possible case of anomalous redshift. The observations comprise broad and narrow band imaging and intermediate resolution spectroscopy of some of the objects in the field. The new data confirm the redshift of the two emission-line objects found within the filament connecting NGC 7603 and NGC 7603B, and settles their type with better accuracy. Although both objects are point-like in ground based images, using HST archive images we show that the objects have structure with a FWHM=0.3-0.4 arcsec. This and the relative strength and width of the main spectral lines allow us to classify these as HII galaxies with very vigorous star formation, while the rest of the filament and NGC 7603B lack star formation. We delineate the halo of NGC 7603 out to 26.2 mag/square arcsec in the Sloan r band filter and find evidence for strong internal distortions. New narrow emission line galaxies at z=0.246, 0.117 and 0.401 are also found at respectively 0.8, 1.5 and 1.7 arcmin to the West of the filament within the fainter contour of this halo. The probability of three background galaxies of any type with apparent B-magnitudes up to 16.6, 21.1 and 22.1 (the observed magnitudes, extinction correction included) being randomly projected on the filament of the fourth galaxy (NGC 7603) is computed resulting ~ 3 x 10^(-9)., Comment: 34 pages, 9 figures, Astronomy & Astrophysics accepted

We present spectroscopic observations of three Ultra Luminous X-ray sources (ULX's). Two of them are very close to the active galaxy NGC 720 and the other is near NGC 1073. The two around NGC 720 turn out to be quasars at z=0.964 and z= 2.216, the one near NGC 1073 seems to be associated to an HII region at the redshift of NGC 1073. We concentrate our analysis on the two quasars and analyze them in conjunction with a set of 20 additional X-ray sources close to nearby galaxies which also fit the criteria of ULX's and which also have been identified as quasars of medium to high redshift. This sample shows an unusually large fraction of rare BL Lac type objects. The high redshifts of these ULX's and their close proximity to their low redshift, supposedly parent galaxies is a surprising result in the light of standard models. We present a quantitative morphological analysis of 187 galaxies in a region covering the central 0.28 square degrees of the Coma cluster. Structural parameters from the best-fitting Sersic r^{1/n} bulge plus, where appropriate, exponential disc model, are tabulated here. This sample is complete down to a magnitude of R=17 mag. By examining the Edwards et al. (2002) compilation of galaxy redshifts in the direction of Coma, we find that 163 of the 187 galaxies are Coma cluster members, and the rest are foreground and background objects. For the Coma cluster members, we have studied differences in the structural and kinematic properties between early- and late-type galaxies, and between the dwarf and giant galaxies. Analysis of the elliptical galaxies reveals correlations among the structural parameters similar to those previously found in the Virgo and Fornax clusters. Comparing the structural properties of the Coma cluster disc galaxies with disc galaxies in the field, we find evidence for an environmental dependence: the scale lengths of the disc galaxies in Coma are 30% smaller. A kinematical analysis shows marginal differences between the velocity distributions of ellipticals with Sersic index n<2 (dwarfs) and those with n>2 (giants); the dwarf galaxies having a greater (cluster) velocity dispersion. Finally, our analysis of all 421 background galaxies reveals a non-uniform distribution in redshift with contrasts in density ~3, characterized by a void extending from ~10,000 to ~20,000 km s^{-1}, and two dense and extended structures centred at ~20,000 and ~47,000 km s^{-1}., Comment: 34 pages, 12 figures, Accepted for publication in ApJ

We are analyzing a sample of closeby galaxy systems, each comprising a bright isolated spiral and its satellites. We find an excess (56%) of prograde satellites over retrograde, which basically holds for all angular displacements from the primary major axis. Monte Carlo simulations show that interlopers and mixing systems at different distances in the sample should not affect porcentages sensibly., Comment: 4 pages, 1 figure, proceedings of the conference "Satellites and tidal streams"

We present extensive new spectroscopy and imaging of PN G 135.9+55.9. We use these data as constraints to photoionization models to derive limits on the oxygen abundance. We find that PN G 135.9+55.9 has an oxygen abundance less than 1/50 of the solar value. Our models favour a value of 12 + \log O/H between 5.8 and 6.5 dex, confirming that PN G 135.9+55.9 is the most oxygen-poor planetary nebula known (Tovmassian et al. 2001). We also derive Ne/O = 0.5 +/- 0.3, S/O < 0.094, and Ar/O < 0.23. Although the value of Ne/O is nominally high, it need not imply that the progenitor of PN G 135.9+55.9 converted any of its initial oxygen abundance to neon. The helium abundance appears to be very low, He/H ~ 0.08, but a precise determination will require a much more detailed study. Using photometric and redshift data for the Virgo and Coma clusters, we present evidence for a correlation between the light concentration of elliptical galaxies (including dwarf ellipticals) and the local 3-D (i.e. non-projected) density of the clusters: more concentrated ellipticals are located in denser regions. The null hypothesis (i.e. the absence of any relation) is rejected at a significance level better than 99.9%. In order to explain the observed relation, a power law relating the galaxy light concentration and the cluster 3-D density is proposed. We study how the projection effects affect the form and dispersion of the data-points in the light concentration-projected density diagram. The agreement between our model and the observed data suggests that there is a paucity of dwarf elliptical galaxies in the cluster central regions., Comment: 7 pages, 2 figures, ApJL accepted

We present deep broad-band R and narrow-band Halpha images of Stephan's Quintet. The observations in the R band show that the diffuse halo of the Stephan's Quintet is larger than previously thought and extends out to NGC 7320C. However, we have not found emission connecting NGC 7331 and NGC 7320 to R ~ 26.7 mag/arcsec^2 (at more than 3-sigma level), so there is no direct evidence up to this limiting magnitude of a relation between the peculiar kinematical structure found in NGC 7331 and an ongoing or past interaction between this galaxy and NGC 7320. The Halpha emission at high-velocity (6000-7000 km/s) is distributed in a diffuse structure running NS between NGC 7319 and NGC 7318B and in some other more concentrated features. Some of these are located in the tidal tails produced by the interaction between the galaxies of the group. With the Halpha images we have made a two-dimensional velocity map which helps to identify the origin of each structure detected. This map does not show features at intermediate velocities between the high- and low-redshift members of the group. This is in agreement with the standard scenario in which the apparent proximity of NGC 7320 to the rest of the galaxies of the Quintet is merely a projection effect. The only point which is unclear in this interpretation, is an Halpha filament which is seen extending throughout NGC 7320 with velocity at 6500 km/s instead of the 800 km/s expected for this galaxy., Comment: Accepted for publication in Astrophys. We have investigated the structural and dynamical properties of triaxial stellar systems whose surface brightness profiles follow the r^{1/n} luminosity law - extending the analysis of Ciotti (1991) who explored the properties of spherical r^{1/n} systems. A new `analytical' expression that accurately reproduces the spatial (i.e. deprojected) luminosity density profiles (error < 0.1%) is presented for detailed modelling of the Sersic family of luminosity profiles. We evaluate both the symmetric and the non--axisymmetric components of the gravitational potential and force, and compute the torques as a function of position. For a given triaxiality, stellar systems with smaller values of n have a greater non-axisymmetric gravitational field component. We also explore the strength of the non-axisymmetric forces produced by bulges with differing n and triaxiality on systems having a range of bulge-to-disc ratios. The increasing disc-to-bulge ratio with increasing galaxy type (decreasing n) is found to heavily reduce the amplitude of the non-axisymmetric terms, and therefore reduce the possibility that triaxial bulges in late-type systems may be the mechanism or perturbation for nonsymmetric structures in the disc. Using seeing-convolved r^{1/n}-bulge plus exponential-disc fits to the K-band data from a sample of 80 nearby disc galaxies, we probe the relations between galaxy type, Sersic index n and the bulge-to-disc luminosity ratio. These relations are shown to be primarily a consequence of the relation between n and the total bulge luminosity. In the K-band, the trend of decreasing bulge-to-disc luminosity ratio along the spiral Hubble sequence is predominantly, although not entirely, a consequence of the change in the total bulge luminosity; the trend between the total disc luminosity and Hubble type is much weaker., Comment: 8 pages, 7 figures, MNRAS accepted

We present the first results of an ongoing project to study the morphological, kinematical, dynamical, and chemical properties of satellite galaxies of external giant spiral galaxies. The sample of objects has been selected from the catalogue by Zaritsky et al. (1997). The paper analyzes the morphology and structural parameters of a subsample of 60 such objects. The satellites span a great variety of morphologies and surface brightness profiles. About two thirds of the sample are spirals and irregulars, the remaining third being early-types. The effects of seeing on Sersic r^{1/n} profile parameters are extensively studied using a Moffat function. This analytical approximation to the point spread function (PSF) is shown to provide the best fit to the PSF predicted from atmospheric turbulence theory when beta=4.765. The Moffat PSF is additionally shown to contain the Gaussian PSF as a limiting case beta->infinity. The Moffat function is also shown to be numerically well behaved when modelling narrow PSFs in HST images. Seeing effects are computed for elliptically symmetric surface brightness distributions. The widely used assumption of circular symmetry when studying the effects of seeing on intrinsically elliptical sources is shown to produce significant discrepancies with respect to the true effects of seeing on these sources. We describe the first instrument of a Cosmic Microwave Background experiment for mapping cosmological structures on medium angular scales (the COSMOSOMAS experiment) and diffuse Galactic emission. The instrument is located at Teide Observatory (Tenerife) and is based on a circular scanning sky strategy. It consists of a 1 Hz spinning flat mirror directing the sky radiation into a 1.8 m off-axis paraboloidal antenna which focuses it on to a cryogenically cooled HEMT-based receiver operating in the frequency range 12--18 GHz. The signal is split by a set of three filters, allowing simultaneous observations at 13, 15 and 17 GHz, each with a 1 GHz bandpass. A 1-5 degree resolution sky map complete in RA and covering 20 degrees in declination is obtained each day at these frequencies. The observations presented here correspond to the first months of operation, which have provided a map of ~9000 square degrees on the sky centred at DEC = +31 degrees with sensitivities of 140, 150 and 250 microK per beam area in the channels at 13, 15 and 17 GHz respectively. We present broad-band photometry and provide a quantitative analysis of the structure of galaxies in the inner region of the Abell Cluster 2443 (z~0.1). The galaxy parameters have been derived by fitting a two-component model (Sersic r^{1/n} bulge and exponential disk) to a magnitude-limited sample. Using a new method of analysis which takes into account the effects of seeing on the structural parameters and considers the ellipticity as an active parameter, we avoid systematic errors arising from assumptions of circular symmetry. 76% of the sample galaxies were classified with these models, the rest were morphologically peculiar. For the spiral galaxies, the relation between n and B/D is consistent with the trend observed in nearby field galaxy samples. The Sersic index n (which can be considered as a concentration index) of the elliptical galaxies is correlated with the local surface density of the cluster. We report results of a spectrophotometric study of SBS 1150+599A and discuss the nature of this object based upon our data. Our study shows that SBS 1150+599A is most probably a planetary nebula located in the Galactic halo and not a cataclysmic variable as originally proposed by the authors of the Second Byurakan Survey from low resolution spectroscopy. We have further elaborated on the properties of SBS 1150+599A (now becoming PN G135.9+55.9) with tools used for planetary nebula analysis. Our photoionization models show that, in order to match the observational constraints, the oxygen abundance in the nebula is probably extremely low, around 1/500 solar, which is one order of magnitude lower than the most oxygen-poor planetary nebulae known so far. This finding has strong implications on our understanding of the formation of planetary nebulae and of the evolution of the Galactic halo., Comment: 13 pages, 5 figures, accepted for publication in Astronomy and Astrophysics

The effects of seeing on the parameters of the S\`ersic profile are studied in an analytical form using a Gaussian point spread function. The surface brightness of S\`ersic profiles is proportional (in magnitudes) to $r^{1/n}$. The parameter $n$ serves to classify the type of profile and is related to the central luminosity concentration. It is the parameter most affected by seeing; furthermore, the value of $n$ that can be measured is always smaller than the real one. It is shown that the luminosity density of the S\`ersic profile with $n$ less than 0.5 has a central depression, which is physically unlikely. Also, the intrinsic ellipticity of the sources has been taken into account and we show that the parameters are dependent when the effects of seeing are non-negligible. Finally, a prescription for correcting raw effective radii, central intensities and $n$ parameters is given., Comment: 7 pages, 5 figure. Accepted for publication in MNRAS

This paper presents the results from the Jodrell Bank-IAC two-element 33 GHz interferometer operated with an element separation of 32.9 wavelengths and hence sensitive to 1 deg scale structure on the sky. The level of CMB fluctuations, assuming a flat CMB spatial power spectrum over the range of multipoles l = 208 +- 18, was found using a likelihood analysis to be \Delta T_l = 63^{+7}_{-6} mu K at the 68% confidence limit, after the subtraction of the contribution of monitored point sources. The paper presents the first results obtained with the Jodrell Bank - IAC two-element 33 GHz interferometer. The instrument was designed to measure the level of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) fluctuations at angular scales of 1 - 2 degrees. The observations analyzed here were taken in a strip of the sky at Dec = +41 deg with an element separation of 16.7 lambda, which gives a maximum sensitivity to ~1.6 deg structures on the sky. The data processing and calibration of the instrument are described. The sensitivity achieved in each of the two channels is 7 micro K per resolution element. A reconstruction of the sky at Dec = +41 deg using a maximum entropy method shows the presence of structure at a high level of significance. A likelihood analysis, assuming a flat CMB spatial power spectrum, gives a best estimate of the level of CMB fluctuations of Delta Tl = 43 (+13,-12) micro K for the range l = 109 +/- 19; the main uncertainty in this result arises from sample variance. We consider that the contamination from the Galaxy is small. These results represent a new determination of the CMB power spectrum on angular scales where previous results show a large scatter; our new results are in agreement with the theoretical predictions of the standard inflationary cold dark matter models., Comment: 11 pages, 11 figures. We describe a new high sensitivity experiment for observing cosmic microwave background (CMB) anisotropies. The instrument is a 2-element interferometer operating at 33 GHz with a ~3 GHz bandwidth. It is installed on the high and dry Teide Observatory site on Tenerife where successful beam-switching observations have been made at this frequency. Two realizations of the interferometer have been tested with element separations of 11.9 lambda and 16.7 lambda. The resulting angular resolution of ~2 deg was chosen to explore the amplitude of CMB structure on the large angular scale side of the Doppler (acoustic) peak. It is found that observations are unaffected by water vapour for more than 70 per cent of the time when the sensitivity is limited by the receiver noise alone. Observations over several months are expected to give an rms noise level of ~10 - 20 micro K covering ~100 resolution elements. Preliminary results show stable operation of the interferometer with the detection of discrete radio sources as well as the Galactic plane at Dec = +41 deg and -29 deg., Comment: 11 pages, 12 figures. We present a detailed study of the stellar kinematics in the barred galaxy NGC 5728 based on I-band photometry and long-slit spectroscopic observations in the region of the near-IR Ca II triplet. The analysis of the stellar line-of-sight velocity distribution (LOSVD) has revealed, in the central regions of the bar, the presence of a cold (v/sigma~2.5) prograde $S$-shaped velocity component that coexists in the central 4 kpc with a fainter and hotter (v/sigma~0.5) counterrotating component. Beyond 4 kpc from the nucleus the LOSVD shows the stellar bar kinematics. The comparison of the radial surface brightness profile of the velocity components with that obtained from an I-band image shows that the counterrotating core follows a r^(1/4) profile, while the S-shaped component does not follows the flat bar surface brightness profile. Several possible scenarios accounting for such kinematic signatures found in the center of the bar in NGC 5728 are discussed., Comment: 11 pages, 8 figures, accepted for publication in Astrophysical Journal

We use data from the Tenerife 10, 15 and 33 GHz beamswitching experiments along with the COBE 53 and 90 GHz data to separate the cosmic microwave background (CMB) signal from the Galactic signal and create two maps at high Galactic latitude. The new multi-MEM technique is used to obtain the best reconstruction of the two channels. The two maps are presented and known features are identified within each. We find that the Galactic contribution to both the 15 and 33 GHz Tenerife data is small enough to be ignored when compared to the errors in the data and the magnitude of the CMB signal., Comment: 5 pages, 6 figures, submitted to MNRAS

The complete set of data from the Tenerife 10 GHz (8 degree FWHM) twin-horn, drift scan experiment is described. These data are affected by both long-term atmospheric baseline drifts and short term noise. A new maximum entropy procedure, utilising the time invariance and spatial continuity of the astronomical signal, is used to achieve a clean separation of these effects from the astronomical signal, and to deconvolve the effects of the beam-switching. We use a fully positive/negative algorithm to produce two-dimensional maps of the intrinsic sky fluctuations. Known discrete sources and Galactic features are identified in the deconvolved map. The data from the 10 GHz experiment, after baseline subtraction with MEM, is then analysed using conventional techniques and new constraints on Galactic emission are made., Comment: 11 pages, 10 figures, accepted by MNRAS

We present the results of a Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) anisotropy ground-based millimetric experiment sensitive to fluctuations on angular scales of $\sim 2\degg$. Four independent bands centered at 3.3, 2.1, 1.3 and 1.1 mm collected $\sim 550$ hours of observation during the Summer of 1994. The instrument was located on the island of Tenerife at an altitude of 2400 m. The low water-vapor content and the atmospheric stability of the site, combined with new techniques to subtract atmospheric noise, result in the reduction of atmospheric contamination in the lowest frequency channel to a level of $\sim 1.5$~times the instrument noise. Detailed estimations of Galactic foreground contamination show that this contribution is negligible at $|b| \stackrel{>}{_\sim} 12\degg$. Two different multipole bands ($\ell=53^{+22}_{-13}$ and $33^{+24}_{-13}$) are analyzed showing that our technique to subtract the atmospheric contribution is more effective in the multipole band at $\ell=53$. A likelihood analysis of these data reveals the presence of a common signal between the channels at 3.3, 2.1 and 1.3 mm corresponding to a band power estimate of $ \sqrt{\lla (\lla+1) C_{\lla}/(2 \pi)} = 2.0^{+1.0}_{-0.8} \cdot 10^{-5}$ and $\sqrt{\lla (\lla+1) C_{\lla}/(2 \pi)} = 4.1^{+2.4}_{-2.2} \cdot 10^{-5}$ for the $\ell =53$ and 33 multipole bands respectively. Calibration uncertainty has been treated as a systematic effect. The level of fluctuations in the $\ell =53$ band is in good agreement with our preliminary analysis presented in Piccirillo \et 1997, with measurements by other experiments working at similar angular scales, and with the predictions of standard Cold Dark Matter (CDM) models., Comment: 14 figures, accepted for publication on Ap. A key prediction of cosmological theories for the origin and evolution of structure in the Universe is the existence of a `Doppler peak' in the angular power spectrum of cosmic microwave background (CMB) fluctuations. We present new results from a study of recent CMB observations which provide the first strong evidence for the existence of a `Doppler Peak' localised in both angular scale and amplitude. This first estimate of the angular position of the peak is used to place a new direct limit on the curvature of the Universe, corresponding to a density of $\Omega=0.7^{+0.8}_{-0.5}$, consistent with a flat Universe. Very low density `open' Universe models are inconsistent with this limit unless there is a significant contribution from a cosmological constant. For a flat standard Cold Dark Matter dominated Universe we use our results in conjunction with Big Bang nucleosynthesis constraints to determine the value of the Hubble constant as $\ho=30-70\kmspmpc$ for baryon fractions $\Omega_b=0.05$ to 0.2. For $\ho=50\kmspmpc$ we find the primordial spectral index of the fluctuations to be $n=1.1 \pm 0.1$, in close agreement with the inflationary prediction of $n \simeq 1.0$, Comment: 7 pages LaTeX, including 6 PostScript figures. We present a detailed analysis of the cosmic microwave background structure in the Tenerife Dec=+40 degrees data. The effect of local atmospheric contributions on the derived fluctuation amplitude is considered, resulting in an improved separation of the intrinsic CMB signal from noise. Our analysis demonstrates the existence of common structure in independent data scans at 15 and 33 GHz. For the case of fluctuations described by a Gaussian auto-correlation function, a likelihood analysis of our combined results at 15 and 33 GHz implies an intrinsic rms fluctuation level of 48^{+21}_{-15} uK on a coherence scale of 4 degrees; the equivalent analysis for a Harrison-Zel'dovitch model gives a power spectrum normalisation of Q_{rms-ps} = 22^{+10}_{-6} uK. The fluctuation amplitude is seen to be consistent at the 68% confidence level with that reported for the COBE two-year data for primordial fluctuations described by a power law model with a spectral index in the range 1.0 \le n \le 1.6. This limit favours the large scale CMB anisotropy being dominated by scalar fluctuations rather than tensor modes from a gravitational wave background. The large scale Tenerife and COBE results are considered in conjunction with observational results from medium scale experiments in order to place improved limits on the fluctuation spectral index; we find n=1.10 +/- 0.10 assuming standard CDM with H_{0}=50 kms^{-1}Mpc^{-1}., Comment: 10 pages LaTeX, including 8 PostScript figures. We present observations at 10 and 15 GHz taken with the Tenerife experiments in a band of the sky at Dec.=+35 degrees. These experiments are sensitive to multipoles in the range l=10-30. The sensitivity per beam is 56 and 20 microK for the 10 and the 15 GHz data, respectively. After subtraction of the prediction of known radio-sources, the analysis of the data at 15 GHz at high Galactic latitude shows the presence of a signal with amplitude Delta Trms ~ 32 microK. In the case of a Harrison-Zeldovich spectrum for the primordial fluctuations, a likelihood analysis shows that this signal corresponds to a quadrupole amplitude Q_rms-ps=20.1+7.1-5.4 microK, in agreement with our previous results at Dec.+=40 degrees and with the results of the COBE DMR. There is clear evidence for the presence of individual features in the RA range 190 degrees to 250 degrees with a peak to peak amplitude of ~110 microK. A preliminary comparison between our results and COBE DMR predictions for the Tenerife experiments clearly indicates the presence of individual features common to both. The constancy in amplitude over such a large range in frequency (10-90 GHz) is strongly indicative of an intrinsic cosmological origin for these structures., Comment: ApJ Letters accepted, 13 pages Latex (uses AASTEX) and 4 encapsulated postscript figures.

Even the most sensitive cosmic microwave background anisotropy experiments have signal to noise ratios <=5, so that an accurate determination of the properties of the cosmological signal requires a careful assessment of the experimental noise. Most of the experiments combine simultaneous multi-channel observations in which the presence of correlated noise is likely. This case is common for ground-based experiments in which an important fraction of the noise could be atmospheric in origin. Here, the way to compute and determine the effects produced by this correlated noise is discussed; in particular, the paper considers the Tenerife experiments (three radiometers at 10, 15 and 33 GHz with two independent receivers each) showing how this effect has been taking into account properly in the more recent analysis of these data. It will be demonstrated that for each of the three radiometers of these experiments, the atmospheric noise is equivalent to a Gaussian noise common to both channels with a coherence time smaller than the binning time, the net effect being an enhancement of the error-bars in the stacked scan as compared with the estimation for the case of pure uncorrelated noise. As expected from the spectral index of the atmosphere, the effect is more important at higher frequencies. We have found that the bulge of the large, nearby Sb galaxy NGC 7331 rotates retrograde to its disk. Analysis of spectra in the region of the near-IR Ca II triplet along the major axis shows that, in the radial range between 5'' and ~20'', the line of sight velocity distribution of the absorption lines has two distinct peaks, and can be decomposed into a fast-rotating component with v/sigma > 3, and a slower rotating, retrograde component with v/sigma between 1 -- 1.5. The radial surface brightness profile of the counter-rotating component follows that of the bulge, obtained from a 2-dimensional bulge-disk decomposition of a near-infrared K-band image, while the fast rotating component follows the disk. At the radius where the disk starts to dominate the isophotes change from being considerably boxy to very disky. Although a number of spiral galaxies have been found that contain cold, couter-rotating disks, this is the first galaxy known to have a boxy, probably triaxial, fairly warm, counter-rotating component, which is dominating in the central regions. If it is a bar seen end-on, this bar has to be thicker than the disk. We find that NGC 7331, even though it is a fairly early-type spiral, does not have a conventional, co-rotating bulge. The fact that the inner component is retrograde makes us believe that it was formed from infalling material, in either stellar or gaseous form (e.g. Balcells & Quinn 1990). Another possibility however is that the structure has been there since the formation of the galaxy. In this case it will be a challenge to explain the large change in orientation of the angular momentum when going outward radially., Comment: 13 pages latex, including 4 figures and 1 B/W plate.
