Search

We report on the detection of four new stellar debris streams and a new dwarf galaxy candidate in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. Three of the streams, ranging between 3 and 15 kpc in distance and spanning between 37 and 84 degrees on the sky, are very narrow and are most probably tidal streams originating in extant or disrupted globular clusters. The fourth stream is much broader, roughly 45 kpc distant, at least 53 degrees in length, and is most likely the tidal debris from a dwarf galaxy. As the streams each span multiple constellations, we extend tradition and designate them the Acheron, Cocytos, Lethe, and Styx streams. At the same distance and apparently embedded in the Styx stream is a ~1 kpc-wide concentration of stars with a similar color-magnitude distribution which we designate Bootes III. Given its very low surface density, its location within the stream, and its apparently disturbed morphology, we argue that Bootes III may be the progenitor of Styx and in possibly the final throes of tidal dissolution. We have obtained radial velocity measurements for stars in two, widely-separated fields in the Anticenter Stream. Combined with SDSS/USNO-B proper motions, the new measurements allow us to establish that the stream is on a nearly circular, somewhat inclined, prograde orbit around the Galaxy. While the orbital eccentricity is similar to that previously determined for the Monoceros stream, the sizes, inclinations, and positions of the orbits for the two systems differ significantly. Integrating our best fitting Anticenter Stream orbit forward, we find that it is closely aligned along and lies almost on top of a stream-like feature previously designated the "Eastern Banded Structure". The position of this feature coincides with the apogalacticon of the orbit. We report on the detection in Sloan Digital Sky Survey data of a 63 degree-long tidal stream of stars, extending from Ursa Major to Cancer. The stream has no obvious association with the orbit of any known cluster or galaxy. The contrast of the detected stream is greatest when using a star count filter that is matched to the color-magnitude distribution of stars in M 13, which suggests that the stars making up the stream are old and metal poor. The visible portion of the stream is very narrow and about 8.5 kpc above the Galactic disk, suggesting that the progenitor is or was a globular cluster. While the surface density of the stream varies considerably along its length, its path on the sky is very smooth and uniform, showing no evidence of perturbations by large mass concentrations in the nearby halo. While definitive constraints cannot be established without velocity information, the stream's projected path and estimates of its distance suggest that we are observing the stream near the perigalacticon of its orbit., Comment: 12 pages, 2 figures, accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal Letters. We analyze HST+WFPC2 images of 77 early-type galaxies. Brightness profiles are classed into "core" or "power-law" forms. Cores are typically rounder than power-law galaxies. Nearly all power-laws with central ellipticity >=0.3 have stellar disks, implying that disks are present in power-laws with epsilon <0.3, but are not visible due to unfavorable geometry. A few low-luminosity core galaxies also have disks; these may be transition forms from power-laws. Cores and power-laws both have twisting isophotes at small radii. Core galaxies have somewhat weaker color gradients than power-laws. Nuclei are found in 29% of the cores and 60% of the power-laws. Nuclei are typically bluer than the surrounding galaxy. NGC 4073 and 4382 have central minima in their intrinsic starlight distributions; NGC 4382 resembles the double nucleus of M31. In general, the peak brightness location is coincident with the photocenter of the core to <1 pc. Five galaxies, however, have centers significantly displaced from their cores; these may be unresolved asymmetric double nuclei. Central dust is visible in half of the galaxies. The presence and strength of dust correlates with nuclear emission. The prevalence of dust and its morphology suggests that dust clouds form, settle to the center, and disappear repeatedly on ~10^8 yr timescales. We discuss the hypothesis that cores are created by the decay of a massive black hole binary. Apart from their brightness profiles, there are no strong differences between cores and power-laws that demand this scenario; however, the rounder shapes of cores, their lack of disks, and their reduced color gradients may be consistent with it., Comment: 76 pages, 40 figures, submitted to the Astronomical Journal. We used HST WFPC2 images to identify six early-type galaxies with surface- brightness profiles that decrease inward over a limited range of radii near their centers. The implied luminosity density profiles of these galaxies have local minima interior to their core break radii. NGC 3706 harbors a high surface brightness ring of starlight with radius ~20 pc. Its central structure may be related to that in the double-nucleus galaxies M31 and NGC 4486B. NGC 4406 and NGC 6876 have nearly flat cores that on close inspection are centrally depressed. Colors for both galaxies imply that this is not due to dust absorption. The surface brightness distributions of both galaxies are consistent with stellar tori that are more diffuse than the sharply defined system in NGC 3706. The remaining three galaxies are the brightest cluster galaxies in A260, A347, and A3574. Color information is not available for these objects, but they strongly resemble NGC 4406 and NGC 6876 in their cores. The thin ring in NGC 3706 may have formed dissipatively. The five other galaxies resemble the endpoints of some simulations of the merging of two gas-free stellar systems, each harboring a massive nuclear black hole. In one version of this scenario, diffuse stellar tori are produced when stars initially bound to one black hole are tidally stripped away by the second black hole. A low mass, large core radius, and strong tidal tails suggest that the globular cluster Palomar 5 has lost a large fraction of its initial mass over time. If the dynamical evolution of Palomar 5 has been dominated by the effects of mass loss, then the luminosity function should be deficient in low-mass stars. Using deep WFPC2 F555W and F814W photometry, we determine the main sequence luminosity functions both near the cluster center and in a field near the half-light radius. There is no compelling evidence for mass segregation within the cluster, but a comparison of the global mass function of Palomar 5 with those of Omega Cen and M55 indicates an increasing deficiency of stars with progressively lower masses. A fit of the observed luminosity function to theoretical models yields a power-law mass function with an exponent of -0.5. The flatness of the mass function is consistent with models of the dynamical evolution of globular clusters that have lost on the order of 90% of their original stellar mass. We have observed the center of the Local Group dwarf irregular galaxy IC 1613 with WFPC2 aboard the Hubble Space Telescope in the F439W, F555W, and F814W filters. We find a dominant old stellar population (aged ~7 Gyr), identifiable by the strong red giant branch (RGB) and red clump populations. From the (V-I) color of the RGB, we estimate a mean metallicity of the intermediate-age stellar population [Fe/H] = -1.38 +/- 0.31. We confirm a distance of 715 +/- 40 kpc using the I-magnitude of the RGB tip. The main-sequence luminosity function down to I ~25 provides evidence for a roughly constant SFR of approximately 0.00035 solar masses per year across the WFPC2 field of view (0.22 square kpc) during the past 250-350 Myr. Structure in the blue loop luminosity function implies that the SFR was ~50% higher 400-900 Myr ago than today. The mean heavy element abundance of these young stars is 1/10th solar. The best explanation for a red spur on the main-sequence at I = 24.7 is the blue horizontal branch component of a very old stellar population at the center of IC 1613. We have also imaged a broader area of IC 1613 using the 3.5-meter WIYN telescope under excellent seeing conditions. The AGB-star luminosity function is consistent with a period of continuous star formation over at least the age range 2-10 Gyr. We present an approximate age-metallicity relation for IC 1613, which appears similar to that of the Small Magellanic Cloud. We compare the Hess diagram of IC 1613 to similar data for three other Local Group dwarf galaxies, and find that it most closely resembles the nearby, transition-type dwarf galaxy Pegasus (DDO 216)., Comment: To appear in the September 1999 Astronomical Journal. We investigate the kinematics of a combined sample of 74 globular clusters around NGC 1399. Their high velocity dispersion, increasing with radius, supports their association with the gravitational potential of the galaxy cluster rather than with that of NGC 1399 itself. We find no evidence for rotation in the full sample, although some indication for rotation in the outer regions. The data do not allow us to detect differences between the kinematics of the blue and red sub-populations of globular clusters. A comparison between the globular cluster systems of NGC 1399 and those of NGC 1404 and NGC 1380 indicates that the globular clusters in all three galaxies are likely to have formed via similar mechanisms and at similar epochs. The only property which distinguishes the NGC 1399 globular cluster system from these others is that it is ten times more abundant. We summarize the evidence for associating these excess globulars with the galaxy cluster rather than with NGC 1399 itself, and suggest that the over-abundance can be explained by tidal stripping, at an early epoch, of neighboring galaxies and subsequent accumulation of globulars in the gravitational potential of the galaxy cluster., Comment: AJ accepted (March issue), 27 pages (6 figures included), AAS style, two columns. We examine the luminosity and B-I color distribution of globular clusters for three early-type galaxies in the Fornax cluster using imaging data from the Wide Field/Planetary Camera 2 on the Hubble Space Telescope. The luminosity functions we derive are in most cases better than 50% complete down to B = 26.6. We find that the color distributions of globular clusters in the central region of NGC 1399 and its nearby neighbor NGC 1404 are bimodal and statistically indistinguishable. The metallicity spread, as inferred from the color distributions in these two galaxies, is very similar to that of M 87. NGC 1399's luminosity function is also very similar to that of M 87, and comparing their respective peak magnitudes indicates that the Fornax cluster is at very nearly the same distance from the Local Group as is the Virgo cluster. From this we derive H_0 = 82 +/- 8 km/s/Mpc, where the uncertainty reflects only the effects of random errors. The number of unresolved objects we find at a projected distance of 440 kpc from NGC 1399 is consistent with nothing more than compact background galaxies, though the small field of view of the WFPC2 does not allow us to put strong constraints on the number of intergalactic globular clusters. The luminosity function of objects detected around NGC 1316 is more nearly exponential than log-normal, and both the color and size distribution of these objects distinguishes them from the clusters surrounding NGC 1399. WFPC-2 images are used to study the central structure of M31, M32, and M33. The dimmer peak, P2, of the M31 double nucleus is centered on the bulge to 0.1", implying that it is the dynamical center of M31. P2 contains a compact source discovered by King et al. (1995) at 1700 A. This source is resolved, with r_{1/2} approx0.2 pc. It dominates the nucleus at 3000 A, and is consistent with late B-early A stars. This probable cluster may consist of young stars and be an older version of the cluster of hot stars at the center of the Milky Way, or it may consist of heavier stars built up from collisions in a possible cold disk of stars orbiting P2. In M32, the central cusp rises into the HST limit with gamma approx0.5, and the central density rho_0>10^7M_sol pc^-3. The V-I and U-V color profiles are flat, and there is no sign of an inner disk, dust, or any other structure. This total lack of features seems at variance with a nominal stellar collision time of 2 X 10^10 yr, which implies that a significant fraction of the light in the central pixel should come from blue stragglers. InM33, the nucleus has an extremely steep gamma=1.49 power-law profile for 0.05" 2 10^6M_sol pc^-3, and the implied relaxation time is only ~3 X 10^6 yr, indicating that the nucleus is highly relaxed. We present an analysis of compact star clusters in deep HST/WFPC2 images of NGC 1275. B and R band photometry of roughly 3000 clusters shows a bimodality in the B-R colors, suggesting that distinct old and young cluster populations are present. The small spread in the colors of the blue clusters is consistent with the hypothesis that they are a single age population, with an inferred age of 0.1 to 1 Gyr. The luminosity function shows increasing numbers of blue clusters to the limit of our photometry, which reaches several magnitudes past the turnover predicted if the cluster population were identical to current Galactic globulars seen at a younger age. The blue clusters have a spatial distribution which is more centrally peaked than that of the red clusters. The individual clusters are slightly resolved, with core radii <~ 0.75 pc if they have modified Hubble profiles. We estimate the specific frequencies of the old and young populations and discuss the uncertainties in these estimates. We find that the specific frequency of the young population in NGC 1275 is currently larger than that of the old population and will remain so as the young population evolves, even if the majority of the low mass clusters are eventually destroyed. If the young population formed during a previous merger, this suggests that mergers can increase the specific frequency of globulars in a galaxy. We present deep photometry obtained with the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) in a field in Baade's Window in the Galactic bulge. We derive a luminosity function down to I ~ 24.3, or V ~ 27.5, corresponding to M ~ 0.3 Msun. The luminosity function from the turnoff down to this level appears remarkably similar to that observed in the solar neighborhood. We derive a mass function using both an empirical local mass-luminosity relation and a mass-luminosity relation from recent stellar model calculations, allowing for the presence of binaries and photometric errors. The mass function has a power law form with dN/dM proportional to M^{-2.2} for M >~ 0.7 Msun. However, we find strong evidence for a break in the mass function slope around 0.5-0.7 Msun, with a significantly shallower slope at lower masses. The value of the slope for the low masses depends on the assumed binary fraction and the accuracy of our completeness correction. We discuss recent observational and numerical work on tidal tails in globular clusters. Evidence of tidal tails has now been found in 16 Galactic globulars and 4 globulars in M31. Simulations indicate that mapping of these tidal tails over most of a typical cluster's orbit may be quite feasible. A relatively modest effort in this regard would yield reliable space velocities for those clusters whose tidal tails could be traced to angular separations of a few degrees or more. Mining of forthcoming databases should allow us to trace the individual orbital paths of globular clusters over large portions of the sky. We present HST photometry for three fields in the outer disk of the LMC extending approximately four magnitudes below the faintest main sequence turnoff. We cannot detect any strongly significant differences in the stellar populations of the three fields based on the morphologies of the color-magnitude diagrams, the luminosity functions, and the relative numbers of stars in different evolutionary stages. Our observations therefore suggest similar star formation histories in these regions, although some variations are certainly allowed. The fields are located in two regions of the LMC: one is in the north-east field and two are located in the north-west. Under the assumption of a common star formation history, we combine the three fields with ground-based data at the same location as one of the fields to improve statistics for the brightest stars. We compare this stellar population with those predicted from several simple star formation histories suggested in the literature, using a combination of the R-method of Bertelli et al (1992) and comparisons with the observed luminosity function. The only model which we consider that is not rejected by the observations is one in which the star formation rate is roughly constant for most of the LMC's history and then increases by a factor of three about 2 Gyr ago. Such a model has roughly equal numbers of stars older and younger than 4 Gyr, and thus is not dominated by young stars. This star formation history, combined with a closed box chemical evolution model, is consistent with observations that the metallicity of the LMC has doubled in the past 2 Gyr., Comment: 30 pages, includes 10 postscript figures. We report moderate resolution, high signal-to-noise spectroscopy of globular clusters around NGC 1399, the central cD galaxy in the Fornax cluster. We address issues as diverse as element abundances of globular clusters versus stellar populations in ellipticals, blue horizontal branches in metal-rich globular clusters, broad-band colors as metallicity tracers, possible overestimation of the age-metallicity degeneracy in globular clusters, and dark matter in the halo of NGC 1399. (...) The derived element abundances for the globular clusters span the entire range observed in the Milky Way and M31, with a mean metallicity of our sample around [Fe/H] ~ -0.8 dex. This implies that the two major sub-populations reported from photometry could have formed by the same processes as the ones that formed halo and disk/bulge globular clusters in the Local Group spirals. Two globular clusters (that we associate with a group of very red globular clusters, representing about 5% of the total system) clearly stand out and exhibit metal abundances as high as observed for stellar populations in giant ellipticals. In addition, they display surprisingly high Hbeta and Hgamma indices that are not explained by any age/metallicity combination of existing models. The high Mg and Hbeta values in these clusters could, however, be explained by the presence of blue horizontal branches. We present B and I photometry for ~300 globular cluster candidates in NGC 1379, an E0 galaxy in the Fornax Cluster. Our data are from both Hubble Space Telescope (HST) and ground-based observations. The HST photometry (B only) is essentially complete and free of foreground/background contamination to ~2 mag fainter than the peak of the globular cluster luminosity function. Fitting a Gaussian to the luminosity function we find =24.95+-0.30 and \sigma_B = 1.55+-0.21. We estimate the total number of globular clusters to be 436+- 30. To a radius of 70 arcsec we derive a moderate specific frequency, S_N=3.5 +- 0.4. At radii r~ 3-6 kpc the surface density profile of the globular cluster system is indistinguishable from that of the underlying galaxy light. At r \ltsim 2.5 kpc the profile of the globular cluster system flattens, and at r \ltsim 1 kpc, the number density appears to decrease. The (B-I) colour distribution of the globular clusters (from ground-based data) is similar to that for Milky Way globulars, once corrected for background contamination. It shows no evidence for bimodality or for the presence of a population with [Fe/H]\gtsim -0.5. Unlike in the case of larger, centrally located cluster ellipticals, neither mergers nor a multiphase collapse are required to explain the formation of the NGC 1379 globular cluster system. We stress the importance of correcting for background contamination: the colour distribution of background galaxies is strongly peaked slightly bluer than the peak of a typical globular cluster distribution. We present an F606W-F814W color-magnitude diagram for the Draco dwarf spheroidal galaxy based on Hubble Space Telescope WFPC2 images. The luminosity function is well-sampled to 3 magnitudes below the turn-off. We see no evidence for multiple turnoffs and conclude that, at least over the field of the view of the WFPC2, star formation was primarily single-epoch. If the observed number of blue stragglers is due to extended star formation, then roughly 6% (upper limit) of the stars could be half as old as the bulk of the galaxy. The color difference between the red giant branch and the turnoff is consistent with an old population and is very similar to that observed in the old, metal-poor Galactic globular clusters M68 and M92. Despite its red horizontal branch, Draco appears to be older than M68 and M92 by 1.6 +/- 2.5 Gyrs, lending support to the argument that the ``second parameter'' which governs horizontal branch morphology must be something other than age. The Sombrero galaxy, NGC 4594, contains the most numerous globular cluster system of any nearby spiral. It is an ideal candidate in which to study the globular clusters and contrast them with those in Local Group spirals. Here we present B and I imaging from the CTIO Schmidt telescope which gives a field-of-view of 31' x 31'. Using DAOPHOT we have detected over 400 globular clusters and derived their magnitudes, B--I colors and photometric metallicities. We have attempted to separate our sample into disk and bulge/halo globular cluster populations, based on location in the galaxy. There is some evidence that the disk population is more metal--rich than the bulge/halo globular clusters, however contamination, dust reddening and small number statistics makes this result very tentative. We find that the median metallicity of the bulge/halo globular clusters is [Fe/H] = -0.8. This metallicity is consistent with previous estimates based on smaller samples. It is also similar to the metallicity predicted by the globular cluster metallicity -- galaxy luminosity relation. As with our Galaxy, there is no radial metallicity gradient in the halo globular clusters. We present high-resolution, broad- and narrow-band, pre-refurbishment images of the central region of M51 taken with the Planetary Camera of the Hubble Space Telescope. The V-band images show a rather chaotic distribution of dust lanes, though some are oriented radially, roughly aligned with the major axis of the bar, and may be transporting gas to the AGN in the nucleus. The dust lane obscuring the nucleus of the galaxy, which was previously thought to be an edge-on accretion disk feeding the AGN, is not centered on the nucleus. It is unlikely that this is a stable configuration, suggesting that the material has only recently entered the nuclear region. The nucleus is contained within a cluster of stars having a total luminosity of order 5x10^7 L_0. Fitting a King model to the least obscured portions of the cluster yields a maximum core radius of 14 pc. The morphology apparent in the forbidden-line images of the extra-nuclear cloud is consistent with a narrow jet striking and scattering off the boundary of a relatively dense cocoon of gas in the disk of the galaxy. We present a V-I color-magnitude diagram for a region 1'-2' from the center of M32 based on Hubble Space Telescope WFPC2 images. The broad color-luminosity distribution of red giants shows that the stellar population comprises stars with a wide range in metallicity. This distribution cannot be explained by a spread in age. The blue side of the giant branch rises to M_I ~ -4.0 and can be fitted with isochrones having [Fe/H] ~ -1.5. The red side consists of a heavily populated and dominant sequence that tops out at M_I ~ -3.2, and extends beyond V-I=4. This sequence can be fitted with isochrones with -0.2 < [Fe/H] < +0.1, for ages running from 15 Gyr to 5 Gyr respectively. We do not find the optically bright asymptotic giant branch stars seen in previous ground-based work and argue that the majority of them were artifacts of crowding. Our results are consistent with the presence of the infrared-luminous giants found in ground-based studies, though their existence cannot be directly confirmed by our data. There is little evidence for an extended or even a red horizontal branch, but we find a strong clump on the giant branch itself. If the age spread is not extreme, the distribution of metallicities in M32 is considerably narrower than that of the closed-box model of chemical evolution, and also appears somewhat narrower than that of the solar neighborhood. We present HST Planetary Camera V and I~band images of the central region of the peculiar giant elliptical galaxy NGC 1316. The inner profile is well fit by a nonisothermal core model with a core radius of 0.41" +/- 0.02" (34 pc). At an assumed distance of 16.9 Mpc, the deprojected luminosity density reaches $\sim 2.0 \times 10^3 L_{\sun}$ pc$^{-3}$. Outside the inner two or three arcseconds, a constant mass-to-light ratio of $\sim 2.2 \pm 0.2$ is found to fit the observed line width measurements. The line width measurements of the center indicate the existence of either a central dark object of mass $2 \times 10^9 M_{\sun}$, an increase in the stellar mass-to-light ratio by at least a factor of two for the inner few arcseconds, or perhaps increasing radial orbit anisotropy towards the center. The mass-to-light ratio run in the center of NGC 1316 resembles that of many other giant ellipticals, some of which are known from other evidence to harbor central massive dark objects (MDO's). We also examine twenty globular clusters associated with NGC 1316 and report their brightnesses, colors, and limits on tidal radii. The brightest cluster has a luminosity of $9.9 \times 10^6 L_{\sun}$ ($M_V = -12.7$), and the faintest detectable cluster has a luminosity of $2.4 \times 10^5 L_{\sun}$ ($M_V = -8.6$). The globular clusters are just barely resolved, but their core radii are too small to be measured. The tidal radii in this region appear to be $\le$ 35 pc. We describe the near real-time transient-source discovery engine for the intermediate Palomar Transient Factory (iPTF), currently in operations at the Infrared Processing and Analysis Center (IPAC), Caltech. We coin this system the IPAC/iPTF Discovery Engine (or IDE). We review the algorithms used for PSF-matching, image subtraction, detection, photometry, and machine-learned (ML) vetting of extracted transient candidates. We also review the performance of our ML classifier. For a limiting signal-to-noise ratio of 4 in relatively unconfused regions, bogus candidates from processing artifacts and imperfect image subtractions outnumber real transients by approximately equal to 10:1. This can be considerably higher for image data with inaccurate astrometric and/or PSF-matching solutions. Despite this occasionally high contamination rate, the ML classifier is able to identify real transients with an efficiency (or completeness) of approximately equal to 97% for a maximum tolerable false-positive rate of 1% when classifying raw candidates. All subtraction-image metrics, source features, ML probability-based real-bogus scores, contextual metadata from other surveys, and possible associations with known Solar System objects are stored in a relational database for retrieval by the various science working groups. We review our efforts in mitigating false-positives and our experience in optimizing the overall system in response to the multitude of science projects underway with iPTF.

We report the discovery by the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer of the z = 2.452 source WISEJ181417.29+341224.9, the first hyperluminous source found in the WISE survey. WISE 1814+3412 is also the prototype for an all-sky sample of approximately 1000 extremely luminous "W1W2-dropouts" (sources faint or undetected by WISE at 3.4 and 4.6 micrometers and well detected at 12 or 22 micrometers). The WISE data and a 350 micrometers detection give a minimum bolometric luminosity of 3.7 x 10(exp 13) solar luminosity, with approximately 10(exp 14) solar luminosity plausible. Followup images reveal four nearby sources: a QSO and two Lyman Break Galaxies (LBGs) at z = 2.45, and an M dwarf star. The brighter LBG dominates the bolometric emission. Gravitational lensing is unlikely given the source locations and their different spectra and colors. The dominant LBG spectrum indicates a star formation rate approximately 300 solar mass yr(exp -1), accounting for less than or equal to 10 percent of the bolometric luminosity. Strong 22 micrometer emission relative to 350 micrometer implies that warm dust contributes significantly to the luminosity, while cooler dust normally associated with starbursts is constrained by an upper limit at 1.1 mm. Radio emission is approximately 10? above the far-infrared/radio correlation, indicating an active galactic nucleus is present. An obscured AGN combined with starburst and evolved stellar components can account for the observations. If the black hole mass follows the local MBH-bulge mass relation, the implied Eddington ratio is approximately greater than 4. WISE 1814+3412 may be a heavily obscured object where the peak AGN activity occurred prior to the peak era of star formation.

We present high-resolution, V band images of the central regions of the brightest cluster ellipticals NGC 3311 and NGC 7768 taken with the Planetary Camera of the Hubble Space Telescope. The nuclei of both galaxies are found to be obscured by dust, though the morphology of the dust is quite different in the two cases. The dust cloud which obscures the central 3 arcsec of NGC 3311 is complex and irregular, while the central region of NGC 7768 contains a disk of material similar in appearance and scale to that recently observed in HST images of NGC 4261. The bright, relatively blue source detected in ground-based studies of NGC 3311 is marginally resolved and is likely to be a site of ongoing star formation. We examine the distribution of globular clusters in the central regions of NGC 3311. The gradient in the surface density profile of the cluster system is significantly shallower than that found by previous investigators at larger radii. We find a core radius for the cluster distribution of 12 plus or minus 3 kpc, which is even larger than the core radius of the globular cluster system surrounding M87. It is also an order of magnitude larger than the upper limit on the core radius of NGC 3311's stellar light and suggests that the central field-star population and the globular cluster system are dynamically distinct. We briefly discuss possible sources for the cold/warm interstellar material in early-type galaxies. While the issue has not been resolved, models which involve galactic wind failure appear to be mo st naturally consistent with the observations.
