The possibility of a correlation between the radio (cm)- and $\gamma$-ray luminosity of variable AGN seen by EGRET is investigated. We performed Monte-Carlo simulations of typical data sets and applied different correlation techniques (partial correlation analysis, $\chi^2$-test applied on flux-flux relations) in view of a truncation bias caused by sensitivity limits of the surveys. For K-corrected flux densities, we find that with the least squares method only a linear correlation can be recovered. Partial correlation analysis on the other side provides a robust tool to detect correlations even in flux-limited samples if intrinsic scatter does not exceed $\sim 40$ \% of the original $\gamma$-ray luminosity. The analysis presented in this paper takes into account redshift bias and truncation effects simultaneously which was never considered in earlier papers. Applying this analysis to simultaneously observed radio- and $\gamma$-ray data, no correlation is found. However, an artificial correlation appears when using the mean flux. This is probably due to the reduction of the dynamical range in the flux-flux relation. Furthermore, we show that comparing the emission in both spectral bands at a high activity state leads to no convincing correlation. In conclusion, we can not confirm a correlation between radio and $\gamma$-ray luminosities of AGN which is claimed in previous works., Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures, uuencoded + gzipped, latex. During its full-sky survey, the Energetic Gamma Ray Experiment Telescope (EGRET) high-energy instrument aboard the Compton Gamma-Ray Observatory detected gamma-ray emission in the energy range above 30 MeV from a source identified as the blazar PKS 0420-014. This object was observed during two separate viewing periods in 1992 February/March and May/June. An intensity decrease above 100 MeV of a factor of at least 1.5 from a maximum of (5.0 +/- 1.4) x 10(exp -7) photons 1 sq cm/s was observed during that time interval indicating extensive variability. The photon spectrum in the range between 30 and 10,000 MeV at the time of the maximum intensity is well represented by a power law with an exponent of -1.9 +/- 0.3. Some similarities with other EGRET detected blazars are briefly discussed.

The intense gamma-ray burst of 1993 January 31 was detected by the Energetic Gamma Ray Experiment Telescope (EGRET) on the Compton Observatory. Sixteen gamma rays above 30 MeV were imaged in the telescope when only 0.04 gamma rays were expected by chance. Two of these gamma rays have energies of approximately 1 GeV, and the five bin spectrum of the 16 events is fitted by a power law of photon spectral index -2.0 +/- 0.4. The high-energy emission extends for at least 25 s. The most probable direction for this burst is determined from the directions of the 16 gamma rays observed by Egret and also by requiring the position to lie on annulus derived by the Interplanetary Network.

The Energetic Gamma Ray Experiment Telescope (EGRET) on the Compton Gamma Ray Observatory (CGRO) has carried out extensive studies of the gamma-ray source Geminga. Following the detection of pulsed X-rays (Halpern and Holt 1992) from Geminga, Bertsch et al. (1992) reported the same 237 ms periodicity to be visible in the EGRET data. A full analysis of the Geminga source shows that the energy spectrum is compatible with a power law with a spectral index of -1.50 +/- 0.08 between 30 MeV and 2 GeV. A falloff relative to the power law is observed for energies above 2 GeV. Phase-resolved spectra also show power laws with high-energy cutoffs, but with significant variation of the spectral index with phase. No unpulsed emission is observed. No evidence for time variation was found within the EGRET observations.

The quasar CTA 102 (QSO 2230 + 114) was observed four times in 1991-1992 by the EGRET high-energy gamma-ray telescope on the Compton GRO satellite. In the 1992 January 23-February 6 observation, emission was detected at the level (2.4 +/- 0.5) x 10 exp 7 photons/sq cm s (E is greater than 100 MeV). The other observations produced upper limits or detections with lower significance which are consistent with the same flux. The photon spectrum can be represented by a power law with a number index of 2.6 +/- 0.2, the softest so far observed by EGRET. The emitted gamma-ray luminosity, if isotropic, is 5 x 10 exp 47 ergs/s (H(0) = 75 km/s Mpc , q(0) = 0.5), although there are good reasons to believe that the gamma emission is strongly beamed.

The Energetic Gamma Ray Experiment Telescope (EGRET) aboard the Compton Gamma Ray Observatory has detected a high-energy gamma-ray source at a position coincident with that of the radio pulsar PSR 1055-52. Analysis of the EGRET data at the radio pulsar period of 197 ms has revealed pulsed gamma-radiation at energies above 300 MeV, making PSR 1055-52 the fifth detected high-energy gamma-ray pulsar. The pulsed radiation from PSR 1055-52 has a very hard photon spectral index of -1.18 +/- 0.16 and a high efficiency for converting its rotational energy into gamma-rays. No unpulsed emission was observed.

Following the initial detection of 3C 279 as an intense high-energy gamma-ray emitter during a 1991, June 16-28 observation, the EGRET instrument on the Compton Gamma Ray Observatory made a second observation during 1991, October 3-17. Low-sensitivity observations were also made during 1991, October 12-31 and 1992 April. The relatively intense June fluxes allowed the time structure to be determined down to the level of half-days. During this period a flux enhancement of about a factor of 4 is seen, lasting several days. The October exposures show fluxes somewhat below the minimum June flux, with no significant evidence of time variability. The 1992 April fluxes are well off the main instrument axis, and so the statistics are less compelling, but the evidence appears to show additional time variability. The observations are consistent with a model in which the gamma rays result from Compton scattering of low-energy photons by relativistic electrons in a jet.

In the course of a full-sky survey, the EGRET instrument aboard the Compton Observatory detected an intense, high Galactic latitude source, which is identified as the OVV (optically violent variable) quasar 1633 + 382. The spectrum is represented by a power law with an energy spectral index of 0.9 between 30 MeV and 30 GeV. The gamma-ray power per decade is about 100 times larger than typical values at any longer wavelength. Significant variation of the gamma-ray flux density on a time scale as short as two days was observed, limiting the size of the region in which the gamma-rays are produced. Assuming the X-rays detected by the Einstein Observatory from this quasar are produced in the same region as the gamma-rays, and a similar X-ray flux density was extant at the time of the EGRET observation, the emission must be beamed to avoid a pair-production optical depth of 10 exp 4 which would exist otherwise. If beaming arises from bulk relativistic motion, the minimum Doppler factor required is 7.6.

The first several pointing directions of the Compton Gamma Ray Observatory, launched on 1991 April 5, were toward the Galactic anticenter. In addition to the known gamma-ray sources, Crab and Geminga, high-energy gamma-ray emission was observed from the quasar PKS 0528 + 134 by the Energetic Gamma Ray Experiment Telescope (EGRET). A redshift measurement, reported here, of 2.07 confirms the identification of this object as a quasar. The differential photon spectrum is well represented by a power law with an exponent of 2.56 +/- 0.09 and a photon intensity above 100 MeV of (8.4 +/- 1.0) x 10 exp -7 photons sq cm/s. There is evidence for time variability on a time scale of a few days.

High-energy gamma radiation has been observed from the optically violent variable quasar 3C 454.3 (PKS 2251 + 158) by the Energetic Gamma-Ray Experiment Telescope on the Compton Observatory. During the 1992 January-February observation, the emission showed a power-law photon spectrum with an exponent of -2.18 +/- 0.08. The flux density (greater than 100 MeV) was observed to vary within the range (0.4-1.4) x 10 exp -6 photon/sq cm s on a time scale of less than a week. Lower sensitivity observations during 1992 April and May also detected emission within that range, but with lower statistical significance. An earlier low-sensitivity exposure during 1991 August gave a 95 percent confidence upper limit of 0.26 x 10 exp 6 photon/sq cm s. The similarity of the gamma-ray emission of 3C 454.3 to that of 3C 279 parallels the similarity of these two objects at lower frequencies.

High-energy gamma-ray emission has been detected from the quasar PKS 0208-512 in the energy range above 30 MeV by the Energetic Gamma Ray Experiment Telescope (EGRET) on the Compton Gamma Ray Observatory. This region of sky was observed in five different viewing periods, and evidence of time variability in the gamma-ray emission by more than a factor of 3 was found. At the maximum intensity between 1991 September 19 and October 3, the flux density above 100 MeV was (9.1 +/- 0.4) x 10 exp -7 gamma/sq cm per sec. The photon spectrum during this period may be expressed as a power law with an exponent of - 1.69 +/- 0.05 between 30 MeV and 4 GeV. This is the hardest quasar spectrum observed by EGRET up to the present time.

Observations of the SMC using the Energetic Gamma Ray Experimental Telescope (EGRET) on the Compton Observatory are reported. The findings yield an upper limit for gamma-ray emission above 100 MeV of 0.5 x 10 exp -7 photon/sq cm s. The expected flux if the cosmic rays (CR) are universal rather than Galactic in origin is (2.4 +/- 0.5) x 10 exp -7 photon/sq cm s, only a third of which arises from cosmic ray electron interactions. Thus, the bulk of the CR energy density is almost certainly neither metagalactic nor universal, but Galactic in origin. The results add to the evidence that the SMC is in a nonequilibrium state and indicate that the LMC is most likely in quasi-stable equilibrium, with a CR energy density near the maximum that can be contained.

An overview of the early results of EGRET, one of four instruments carried on the Compton Gamma Ray Observatory, is presented with regard to observations of pulsars, bursts, galactic diffuse radiation, and active galaxies. The June 11, 1992 solar flare was observed in gamma rays with energies from the threshold of detection to energies over 1 GeV. Detailed time histories and energy spectra were obtained for the Crab and Vela pulsars, with one of the Vela pulses being quite sharp, approximately 2 percent of the total period. Several gamma-ray bursts were recorded. The one on May 3, 1991 was seen in EGRET's spark chamber system, which made it possible to determine a position. The quasars 3C 279, which has a redshift of 0.538, was seen in high energy gamma rays in both June and October 1992.

The Energetic Gamma-Ray Experiment Telescope (EGRET) on the Compton Gamma-Ray Observatory observed the Cygnus region of the Galaxy during the periods 1991 May 30-June 8 and 1991 August 8-15. We report on a periodicity analysis of the gamma rays originating from the direction of Cygnus X-3. This analysis showed no evidence of periodic modulation during these observations of the gamma-ray emission at the approximately 4.8 hr period observed at X-ray wavelengths.

Following the detection of pulsed X-rays and gamma rays from Geminga, the 1972-1973 SAS 2 data which first revealed this source have been reanalyzed. The 237 ms periodicity is visible in those observations. The phase of the SAS 2 periodicity is consistent with that of COS B suggesting that the gamma-ray data allow an accounting for every revolution of the Geminga pulsar between 1972 and 1982.

Gamma radiation above 100 MeV in energy has been detected from the radio pulsar PSR1706-44. The gamma emission forms a single broad peak within the pulsar period of 102 ms, in contrast to the two narrow peaks seen in the other three known high-energy gamma-ray pulsars. The emission mechanism in all cases is probably the same, the differences arising from the geometry of the magnetic and rotation axes and the line of sight. Gamma-ray emission accounts for as much as 1 percent of the total neutron star spindown energy in these pulsars, much more than emerges at optical or radio frequencies. Thus, study of this emission is important in understanding pulsar emission and evolution.

The detection of pulsed gamma rays with energy above 50 MeV from the soft X-ray source 1E0630 + 178 is reported, confirming the identification of Geminga with this X-ray source. The period derivative (11.4 +/- 1.7) x 10 exp -15 s/s suggests that Geminga is a nearby isolated rotating neutron star with a magnetic field of 1.6 x 10 exp 12 gauss, a characteristic age of 300,000 yr, and a spin-down energy loss rate of 3.5 x 10 exp 34 erg/s.

We describe the Energetic Gamma Ray Experiment Telescope (EGRET) data products which we anticipate will suffice for virtually all guest and archival investigations. The production process, content, availability, format, and the associated software of each product is described. Supplied here is sufficient detail for each researcher to do analysis which is not supported by extant software.

On May 3, 1991, the Energetic Gamma Ray Experiment Telescope on the Compton Gamma Ray Observatory detected a gamma-ray burst both in the energy measurement subsystem and independently in the spark chamber assembly. Six individual photons were detected in the spark chamber, allowing a determination of the burst arrival direction which was l(II) = 171.9 deg +/- 1.3 deg, b(II) = 5.3 deg +/- 1.1 deg. Three energy spectra were measured from 1 to 200 MeV; they were measured during the first second after the Burst and Transient Sources Experiment trigger, the next two seconds, and the subsequent four seconds. The first two spectra exhibit a similar differential spectra index of about -2.2 with no apparent high-energy cut-off. By the time of the third spectrum, an additional soft component is evident.

Recent observations of Cygnus X-3 have shown marked variability of the radiation on short time scales. In particular, the bursts lasting on the order of 10 minutes, seen in both the infrared and very high energy (greater than 10 to the 11th eV) gamma-ray regions, and the time-variations on many scales at high energies, have stimulated a reanalysis of the March 6 to 13, 1973 SAS 2 high-energy gamma-ray data. Although a clear periodicity in the E greater 35 MeV gamma radiation is observed at the 4.79 hr period seen in X-rays, there is no evidence for major variations of the radiation from one day to the next, and no statistically significant evidence for bursts on the 10-minute time scale seen in the infrared or very high energy ranges. If the excess observed had been predominantly in the form of ten minute bursts even at a rate as high as two/day, a clearly significant set of bursts would have been seen.

Gamma ray observations of the solar system, the galaxy and extragalactic radiation are reported. Topics include: planets, comets, and asteroids; solar observations; interstellar medium and galactic structure; compact objects; cosmology; and diffuse radiation. The instrumentation used in gamma ray astronomy in covered along with techniques for the analysis of observational spectra.

Evidence is reported for the observation of gamma-ray emission from the radio pulsar PSR 1747-46 by the gamma-ray telescope aboard SAS 2. The evidence is based on the presence of both an approximately 3-sigma enhancement of gamma rays at the pulsar's location and an approximately 4-sigma peak in the phase plot of 79 gamma-ray events whose phase was calculated from the pulsar's known period. The gamma-ray pulsation is found to appear at a phase lag of about 0.16 from that predicted by the radio observations. The pulsed gamma-ray fluxes above 35 MeV and 100 MeV are estimated, and it is shown that the gamma-ray pulse width is similar to the radio pulse width. It is concluded that PSR 1747-46 is a most likely candidate for pulsed gamma-ray emission.

The Second Small Astronomy Satellite (SAS-2) high-energy (in excess of 35 MeV) gamma-ray telescope has detected pulsed gamma-ray emission at the radio period from PSR 0833-45, the Vela pulsar, as well as an unpulsed flux from the Vela region. The pulsed emission consists of two peaks following the single radio peak by about 13 ms and 48 ms. The luminosity of the pulsed emission above 100 MeV from Vela is about 0.1 that of the pulsar NP 0532 in the Crab nebula, whereas the pulsed emission from Vela at optical wavelengths is less than 0.0002 that from the Crab. The relatively high intensity of the pulsed gamma-ray emission, and the double peak structure, compared with the single pulse in the radio emission, suggest that the high-energy gamma-ray pulsar emission may be produced under different conditions from those at lower energies.

Data are reported which were obtained with a high-energy (exceeding 35 Mev) gamma-ray telescope flown on the second Small Astronomy Satellite (SAS-2). The high-energy galactic gamma radiation is observed to dominate over the general diffuse radiation along the entire galactic plane, and its longitudinal and latitudinal distributions appear to be generally correlated with galactic structural features, particularly with arm segments. Principally on the basis of its angular distribution and magnitude, it is suggested that this radiation results primarily from cosmic-ray interactions with interstellar matter. A uniform celestial gamma radiation appears to have been detected; the form of its differential spectrum over the energy range from about 35 to 170 MeV is obtained, and a cosmological origin is suggested for this radiation. In addition to the general galactic emission, high-energy gamma radiation was detected from the Crab Nebula, Vela X, a general region toward the galactic center, and a region located a few degrees north of the galactic plane. Upper limits to the high-energy gamma ray fluxes are set for a number of localized sources.

The nature of the high-energy spectra of several types of active galaxies and their contribution to the measured diffuse gamma-ray emission between 1 and 150 MeV are considered, using X-ray spectra of active galaxies and SAS 2 data regarding the intensity upper limits to the gamma-ray emission above 35 MeV. It is found that a substantial increase in slope of the photon energy spectrum must occur in the low energy gamma-ray region for Seyfert galaxies, BL Lac objects, and emission line galaxies; the power-law spectra observed in the X-ray range must steepen substantially between 50 keV and 50 MeV. In addition, a cosmological integration shows that Seyfert galaxies, BL Lac objects, and quasars may account for most of the 1-150 MeV diffuse background, even without significant evolution.

Gamma-ray astronomy, which may be defined to include the spectral region from above 100 keV to about 1000 GeV, permits investigation of the most energetic photons originating in the Galaxy and beyond. These observations provide the most direct means of studying the largest transfers of energy occurring in astrophysical processes, including the dynamic effects of the energetic charged cosmic-ray particles, element synthesis, and particle acceleration. Further, gamma-rays suffer negligible absorption or scattering as they travel in straight paths. Hence they may survive billions of years. Studies of the spatial, temporal, and energy distribution of cosmic gamma-rays will, therefore, provide fundamental new information for resolving some of the major problems in astrophysics today. Attention is given to the gamma-ray observations of the solar system, stellar objects, diffuse gamma-ray emission from the Galaxy, other galaxies and cosmology, and future prospects.

Gamma-ray astronomy which includes the spectral region from above approximately 100 keV to greater than or equal to 1000 GeV permits investigation of the most energetic photons originating in our galaxy and beyond and provides the most direct means of studying the largest transfers of energy occurring in astrophysical processes. Of all the electromagnetic spectrum, high-energy gamma-ray astronomy measures most directly the presence and dynamic effects of the energetic charged cosmic ray particles, element synthesis, and particle acceleration. Further, gamma rays suffer negligible absorption or scatterings as they travel in straight paths; hence, they may survive billions of years and still reveal their source. The high energy processes in stellar objects (including our Sun), the dynamics of the cosmic-ray gas, the formation of clouds and nebulae, galactic evolution and even certain aspects of cosmology and the origin of the universe may be explored by gamma-ray observations.

The concept that cosmic-ray density is related to the matter to which cosmic rays are dynamically coupled through magnetic fields on the scale of galactic arm segments is considered with specific reference to gamma-ray astronomy. A model of the galactic-matter and cosmic-ray distributions is developed on the basis of 21-cm radio surveys and recent observations of the 2.6-mm CO emission line by assuming that cosmic rays are galactic in origin, their column density is proportional to the total interstellar-gas column density, their scale height is considerably larger than that of the matter, and the Galaxy is a spiral with an arm/interarm density ratio of about 3 to 1. It is found that there is a good correlation between the observed gamma-ray intensity and that predicted on the basis of essentially complete coupling of cosmic rays to the best estimate of atomic and molecular hydrogen in the Galaxy. Individual maxima observed in gamma-radiation from the central region of the Galaxy are shown to be well correlated with those predicted to result from certain spiral-arm tangents if all the matter is assumed to be modulated in a particular spiral-arm segment pattern.

The experimental development of gamma-ray astronomy and detectors for gamma-ray observations is reviewed together with recent results obtained by the SAS-2, COS-B, and other satellites. Diffuse gamma-ray emission from the galactic plane is discussed, various localized sources are examined, and the primary production processes for celestial gamma-rays are treated in relation to the difficulty involved in detecting this radiation. Several different types of gamma-ray detectors are described in detail, and the production of high-energy gamma-rays by cosmic-ray interactions with interstellar matter is investigated. Observations of gamma-rays from the Crab Nebula and pulsar, the Vela pulsar, Cen A, and other point or localized sources are summarized with observations of nuclear gamma-ray lines during solar flares. Possible interpretations are considered for the diffuse gamma-radiation detected in regions away from the galactic plane.

Recent developments in gamma-ray astronomy due to the results from SAS-2 have focused on two areas. First, the emission from the plane of the Galaxy is the dominant feature in the gamma-ray sky. The galactic latitude and longitude distributions are consistent with the concept that the high-energy radiation originates from cosmic rays interacting with interstellar matter, and the measurements support a galactic origin for cosmic rays. Second, searches of the SAS-2 data for emission from localized sources have shown three strong discrete gamma-ray sources: the Crab nebula and PSR 0531 + 21, the Vela supernova remnant and PSR 0833-45, and a source near galactic coordinates 193 deg longitude, +3 deg latitude, which does not appear to be associated with other known celestial objects. Evidence has also been found for pulsed gamma-ray emission from two other radio pulsars, PSR 1818-04 and PSR 1747-46. A localized source near longitudes 76-80 deg may be associated with the X-ray source Cyg X-3.

Gamma ray astronomy is now beginning to provide a new look at the galactic structure and the distribution of cosmic rays, both electrons and nucleons, within the galaxy. The observations are consistent with a galactic spiral-arm model in which the cosmic rays are linearly coupled to the interstellar gas on the scale of the spiral arms. The agreement between the predictions of the model and the observations for regions of the plane where both 21-cm and 2.6-mm CO surveys exist emphasizes the need to extend these observations to include the entire plane. Future gamma-ray observations with more sensitivity and better angular resolutions, combined with these radio surveys, should shed new light on the distribution of cosmic rays, the nature of the galaxy, and the location and intensity of the spiral arms.

Data from the SAS-2 high-energy (above 35 MeV) gamma-ray experiment have been examined for pulsed emission from each of 75 radio pulsars which were viewed by the instrument and which have sufficiently well-defined period and period-derivative information from radio observations to allow for gamma-ray periodicity searches. When gamma-ray arrival times were converted to pulsar phase using the radio reference timing information, two pulsars, PSR 1747-46 and PSR 1818-04, showed positive effects, each with a probability of less than 1 part in 10,000 of being a random fluctuation in the data for that pulsar. These are in addition to PSR 0531+21 and PSR 0833-45, previously reported. The results of this study suggest that gamma-ray astronomy has reached the detection threshold for gamma-ray pulsars and that work in the near future should give important new information on the nature of pulsars.

Papers are presented dealing with galactic structure drawing on all branches of galactic astronomy with emphasis on the implications of the new gamma ray observations. Topics discussed include: (1) results from the COS-B gamma ray satellite; (2) results from SAS-2 on gamma ray pulsar, Cygnus X-3, and maps of the galactic diffuse flux; (3) recent data from CO surveys of the galaxy; (4) high resolution radio surveys of external galaxies; (5) results on the galactic distribution of pulsars; and (6) theoretical work on galactic gamma ray emission.
