We report the results of a 3-weeks multi-wavelength campaign on the flat spectrum radio quasar 3C 273 carried out with the AGILE gamma-ray mission, covering the 30 MeV -50 GeV and 18-60 keV, the REM observatory (covering the near-IR and optical), Swift (near-UV/Optical, 0.2-10 keV and 15-50 keV), INTEGRAL (3 - 200 keV) and Rossi XTE (2-12 keV). This is the first observational campaign including gamma-ray data, after the last EGRET observations, more than 8 years ago. Our study was carried out using simultaneous light curves of the source flux from all the involved instruments, in the different energy ranges, in search for correlated variability. Then a time-resolved SED was used for a detailed physical modelling of the emission mechanisms. The source was detected in gamma-rays only in the second week of our campaign. We found indication of a possible anti-correlation between the emission at gamma-rays and at soft and hard X-rays, supported by the complete set of instruments. Instead, optical data do not show short term variability. Only in two EGRET observations (in 1993 and 1997) 3C 273 showed intra-observation variability in gamma-rays. The SED with almost simultaneous data, partially covers the regions of the synchrotron emission, the big blue bump, and the inverse-Compton. The soft X-ray emission is consistent with combined SSC and EC mechanisms, while hard X and gamma-ray emissions are compatible with EC from thermal photons of the disk. Context. We report the detection by the AGILE satellite of an intense gamma-ray flare from the gamma-ray source 3EG J1255-0549, associated to the Flat Spectrum Radio Quasar 3C 279, during the AGILE pointings towards the Virgo Region on 2007 July 9-13. Aims. The simultaneous optical, X-ray and gamma-ray covering allows us to study the spectral energy distribution (SED) and the theoretical models relative to the flaring episode of mid-July. Methods. AGILE observed the source during its Science Performance Verification Phase with its two co-aligned imagers: the Gamma- Ray Imaging Detector (GRID) and the hard X-ray imager (Super-AGILE) sensitive in the 30 MeV - 50 GeV and 18 - 60 keV respectively. During the AGILE observation the source was monitored simultaneously in optical band by the REM telescope and in the X-ray band by the Swift satellite through 4 ToO observations. Results. During 2007 July 9-13 July 2007, AGILE-GRID detected gamma-ray emission from 3C 279, with the source at ~2 deg from the center of the Field of View, with an average flux of (210+-38) 10^-8 ph cm^-2 s^-1 for energy above 100 MeV. No emission was detected by Super-AGILE, with a 3-sigma upper limit of 10 mCrab. During the observation lasted about 4 days no significative gamma-ray flux variation was observed. Conclusions. The Spectral Energy Distribution is modelled with a homogeneous one-zone Synchrotron Self Compton emission plus the contributions by external Compton scattering of direct disk radiation and, to a lesser extent, by external Compton scattering of photons from the Broad Line Region., Comment: Accepted for publication in Astronomy and Astrophysics

We report the detection by the AGILE (Astro-rivelatore Gamma a Immagini LEggero) satellite of an intense gamma-ray flare from the source AGL J1511-0909, associated with the powerful quasar PKS 1510-089, during ten days of observations from 23 August to 1 September 2007. During the observation period, the source was in optical decrease following a flaring event monitored by the GLAST-AGILE Support Program (GASP) of the Whole Earth Blazar Telescope (WEBT). The simultaneous gamma-ray, optical, and radio coverage allows us to study the spectral energy distribution and the theoretical models based on the synchrotron and inverse Compton (IC) emission mechanisms. AGILE observed the source with its two co-aligned imagers, the Gamma-Ray Imaging Detector and the hard X-ray imager Super-AGILE sensitive in the 30 MeV - 50 GeV and 18 - 60 keV bands, respectively. Between 23 and 27 August 2007, AGILE detected gamma-ray emission from PKS 1510-089 when this source was located about 50 degrees off-axis, with an average flux of (270 +/- 65) x 10^{-8} photons cm^{-2} s^{-1} for photon energy above 100 MeV. In the following period, 28 August - 1 September, after a satellite re-pointing, AGILE detected the source at about 35 degrees off-axis, with an average flux (E > 100 MeV) of (195 +/- 30) x 10^{-8} photons cm^{-2} s^{-1}. No emission was detected by Super-AGILE, with a 3-sigma upper limit of 45 mCrab in 200 ksec. The spectral energy distribution is modelled with a homogeneous one-zone synchrotron self Compton (SSC) emission plus contributions by external photons: the SSC emission contributes primarily to the X-ray band, whereas the contribution of the IC from the external disc and the broad line region match the hard gamma-ray spectrum observed., Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

AGILE is a small gamma-ray astronomy satellite mission of the Italian Space Agency dedicated to high-energy astrophysics launched in 2007 April. Its 1 microsecond absolute time tagging capability coupled with a good sensitivity in the 30 MeV-30 GeV range, with simultaneous X-ray monitoring in the 18-60 keV band, makes it perfectly suited for the study of gamma-ray pulsars following up on the CGRO/EGRET heritage. In this paper we present the first AGILE timing results on the known gamma-ray pulsars Vela, Crab, Geminga and B 1706-44. The data were collected from 2007 July to 2008 April, exploiting the mission Science Verification Phase, the Instrument Timing Calibration and the early Observing Pointing Program. Thanks to its large field of view, AGILE collected a large number of gamma-ray photons from these pulsars (about 10,000 pulsed counts for Vela) in only few months of observations. We report on the catalog of Gamma--Ray Bursts (GRBs) detected with the Gamma Ray Burst Monitor aboard the BeppoSAX satellite. It includes 1082 GRBs with 40--700 keV fluences in the range from $1.3\times 10^{-7}$ to $4.5\times 10^{-4}$ erg cm$^{-2}$, and with 40--700 keV peak fluxes from $3.7\times 10^{-8}$ to $7.0\times 10^{-5}$ erg cm$^{-2}$s$^{-1}$. The Mini-Calorimeter (MCAL) instrument on-board the AGILE satellite is a non-imaging gamma-ray scintillation detector sensitive in the 300keV-100MeV energy range with a total on-axis geometrical area of 1400cm^2. Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs) are one of the main scientific targets of the AGILE mission and the MCAL design as an independent self-triggering detector makes it a valuable all-sky monitor for GRBs. Furthermore MCAL is one of the very few operative instruments with microsecond timing capabilities in the MeV range. In this paper the results of GRB detections with MCAL after one year of operation in space are presented and discussed. A flexible trigger logic implemented in the AGILE payload data-handling unit allows the on-board detection of GRBs. For triggered events, energy and timing information are sent to telemetry on a photon-by-photon basis, so that energy and time binning are limited by counting statistics only. When the trigger logic is not active, GRBs can be detected offline in ratemeter data, although with worse energy and time resolution. Between the end of June 2007 and June 2008 MCAL detected 51 GRBs, with a detection rate of about 1 GRB/week, plus several other events at a few milliseconds timescales. Since February 2008 the on-board trigger logic has been fully active. Comparison of MCAL detected events and data provided by other space instruments confirms the sensitivity and effective area estimations. [Abridged] We report on a multiwavelength observation of the blazar 3C 454.3 (which we dubbed "crazy diamond") carried out on November 2007 by means of the astrophysical satellites AGILE, INTEGRAL, Swift, the WEBT Consortium, and the optical-NIR telescope REM. 3C 454.3 is detected at a $\sim 19-\sigma$ level during the 3-week observing period, with an average flux above 100 MeV of $F_{\rm E>100MeV} = (170 \pm 13) \times 10^{-8}$ \phcmsec. The gamma-ray spectrum can be fit with a single power-law with photon index $\Gamma_{\rm GRID} = 1.73 \pm 0.16$ between 100 MeV and 1 GeV. We detect significant day-by-day variability of the gamma-ray emission during our observations, and we can exclude that the fluxes are constant at the 99.6% ($\sim 2.9 \sigma$) level. The source was detected typically around 40 degrees off-axis, and it was substantially off--axis in the field of view of the AGILE hard X-ray imager. However, a 5-day long ToO observation by INTEGRAL detected 3C 454.3 at an average flux of about $F_{\rm 20-200 keV} = 1.49 \times 10^{-3}$ \phcmsec with an average photon index of $\Gamma_{\rm IBIS} = 1.75 \pm 0.24$ between 20--200 keV. Swift also detected 3C 454.3 with a flux in the 0.3--10 keV energy band in the range $(1.23-1.40) \times 10^{-2}$ \phcmsec{} and a photon index in the range $\Gamma_{\rm XRT} = 1.56-1.73$. In the optical band, both WEBT and REM show an extremely variable behavior in the $R$ band. A correlation analysis based on the entire data set is consistent with no time-lags between the gamma-ray and the optical flux variations. Our simultaneous multifrequency observations strongly indicate that the dominant emission mechanism between 30 MeV and 30 GeV is dominated by inverse Compton scattering of relativistic electrons in the jet on the external photons from the broad line region., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ. GRB 080514B is the first gamma ray burst (GRB), since the time of EGRET, for which individual photons of energy above several tens of MeV have been detected with a pair-conversion tracker telescope. This burst was discovered with the Italian AGILE gamma-ray satellite. The GRB was localized with a cooperation by AGILE and the interplanetary network (IPN). The gamma-ray imager (GRID) estimate of the position, obtained before the SuperAGILE-IPN localization, is found to be consistent with the burst position. The hard X-ray emission observed by SuperAGILE lasted about 7 s, while there is evidence that the emission above 30 MeV extends for a longer duration (at least ~13 s). Similar behavior was seen in the past from a few other GRBs observed with EGRET. However, the latter measurements were affected, during the brightest phases, by instrumental dead time effects, resulting in only lower limits to the burst intensity. Thanks to the small dead time of the AGILE/GRID we could assess that in the case of GRB 080514B the gamma-ray to X-ray flux ratio changes significantly between the prompt and extended emission phase., Comment: A&A letters, in press

We report the gamma-ray activity from the intermediate BL Lac S5 0716+714 during observations acquired by the AGILE satellite in September and October 2007. These detections of activity were contemporaneous with a period of intense optical activity, which was monitored by GASP-WEBT. This simultaneous optical and gamma-ray coverage allows us to study in detail the light curves, time lags, gamma-ray photon spectrum, and Spectral Energy Distributions (SEDs) during different states of activity. AGILE observed the source with its two co-aligned imagers, the Gamma-Ray Imaging Detector (GRID) and the hard X-ray imager (Super-AGILE), which are sensitive to the 30 MeV-50 GeV and 18-60 keV energy ranges, respectively. Observations were completed in two different periods, the first between 2007 September 4-23, and the second between 2007 October 24-November 1. Over the period 2007 September 7-12, AGILE detected gamma-ray emission from the source at a significance level of 9.6-sigma with an average flux (E>100 MeV) of (97 +/- 15) x 10^{-8} photons cm^{-2} s^{-1}, which increased by a factor of at least four within three days. No emission was detected by Super-AGILE for the energy range 18-60 keV to a 3-sigma upper limit of 10 mCrab in 335 ksec. In October 2007, AGILE repointed toward S5 0716+714 following an intense optical flare, measuring an average flux of (47 +/- 11) x 10^{-8} photons cm^{-2} s^{-1} at a significance level of 6.0-sigma. The gamma-ray flux of S5 0716+714 detected by AGILE is the highest ever detected for this blazar and one of the most intense gamma-ray fluxes detected from a BL Lac object. We present the AGILE gamma-ray observations of the field containing the puzzling gamma-ray source 3EG J1835+5918. This source is one of the most remarkable unidentified EGRET sources. An unprecedentedly long AGILE monitoring of this source yields important information on the positional error box, flux evolution, and spectrum. 3EG J1835+5918 has been in the AGILE field of view several times in 2007 and 2008 for a total observing time of 138 days from 2007 Sept 04 to 2008 June 30 encompassing several weeks of continuous coverage. With an exposure time approximately twice that of EGRET, AGILE confirms the existence of a prominent gamma-ray source (AGL J1836+5926) at a position consistent with that of EGRET, although with a remarkably lower average flux value for photon energies greater than 100 MeV. A 5-day bin temporal analysis of the whole data set of AGL J1836+5926 shows some evidence for variability of the gamma-ray flux. The source spectrum between 100 MeV and 1 GeV can be fitted with a power law with photon index in the range 1.6-1.7, fully consistent with the EGRET value. The faint X-ray source RX J1836.2+5925 that has been proposed as a possible counterpart of 3EG J1835+5918 is well within the AGILE error box. Future continuous monitoring (both by AGILE and GLAST) is needed to confirm the gamma-ray flux variability and to unveil the source origin, a subject that is currently being pursued through a multiwavelength search for counterparts., Comment: accepted for publication by Astron. & Astrophys, 4 pages, 2 figures, 2 tables

In May 2008 the soft gamma-ray repeater SGR 1627-41 resumed its bursting activity after nearly a decade of quiescence. After detection of a bright burst, Swift pointed its X-ray telescope in the direction of the source in less than five hours and followed it for over five weeks. In this paper we present an analysis of the data from these Swift observations and an XMM-Newton one performed when SGR 1627-41 was still in a quiescent state. The analysis of the bursts detected with Swift/BAT shows that their temporal and spectral properties are similar to those found in previous observations of SGR 1627-41 and other soft gamma-ray repeaters. The maximum peak luminosity of the bursts was about 2E+41 erg/s. We report the first blazar detection by the AGILE satellite. AGILE detected 3C 454.3 during a period of strongly enhanced optical emission in July 2007. AGILE observed the source with a dedicated repointing during the period 2007 July 24-30 with its two co-aligned imagers, the Gamma-Ray Imaging Detector and the hard X-ray imager Super-AGILE sensitive in the 30 MeV-50 GeV and 18-60 keV, respectively. Over the entire period, AGILE detected gamma-ray emission from 3C 454.3 at a significance level of 13.8-$\sigma$ with an average flux (E$>$100 MeV) of $(280 \pm 40) \times 10^{-8}$ photons cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$. The gamma-ray flux appears to be variable towards the end of the observation. No emission was detected by Super-AGILE in the energy range 20-60 keV, with a 3-$\sigma$ upper limit of $2.3 \times 10^{-3}$ photons cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$. The success of the SWIFT/BAT and INTEGRAL missions has definitely opened a new window for follow-up and deep study of the transient gamma-ray sky. This now appears as the access key to important progresses in the area of cosmological research and deep understanding of the physics of compact objects. To detect in near real-time explosive events like Gamma-Ray bursts, thermonuclear flashes from Neutron Stars and other types of X-ray outbursts we have developed a concept for a wide-field gamma-ray coded mask instrument working in the range 8-200 keV, having a sensitivity of 0.4 ph cm-2 s-1 in 1s (15-150 keV) and arcmin location accuracy over a sky region as wide as 3sr. This scientific requirement can be achieved by means of two large area, high spatial resolution CZT detection planes made of arrays of relatively large (~1cm2) crystals, which are in turn read out as matrices of smaller pixels. To achieve such a wide Field-Of-View the two units can be placed at the sides of a S/C platform serving a payload with a complex of powerful X-ray instruments, as designed for the EDGE mission. GRB 070724B is the first Gamma Ray Burst localized by SuperAGILE, the hard X-ray monitor aboard the AGILE satellite. The coordinates of the event were published $\sim 19$ hours after the trigger. The Swift X-Ray Telescope pointed at the SuperAGILE location and detected the X-ray afterglow inside the SuperAGILE error circle. The AGILE gamma-ray Tracker and Minicalorimeter did not detect any significant gamma ray emission associated with GRB 070724B in the MeV and GeV range, neither prompt nor delayed. Searches of the optical afterglow were performed by the Swift UVOT and the Palomar automated 60-inch telescopes without any significant detection. Similarly the Very Large Array did not detect a radio afterglow. In December 2004, the soft gamma-ray repeater SGR 1806-20 emitted the most powerful giant flare ever observed. This probably involved a large-scale rearrangement of the magnetosphere leading to observable variations in the properties of its X-ray emission. Here we present the results of the first Suzaku observation of SGR 1806-20, together with almost simultaneous observations with XMM-Newton and INTEGRAL. The source seems to have reached a state characterized by a flux close to the pre-flare level and by a relatively soft spectrum. Despite this, SGR 1806-20 remained quite active also after the giant flare, allowing us to study several short bursts observed by Suzaku in the 1-100 keV range. We discuss the broad-band spectral properties of SGR 1806-20, covering both persistent and bursting emission, in the context of the magnetar model, and consider its recent theoretical developments., Comment: Accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics

SuperAGILE is a coded mask experiment based on silicon microstrip detectors. It operates in the 15-45 keV nominal energy range, providing crossed one-dimensional images of the X-ray sky with an on-axis angular resolution of 6 arcmin, over a field of view in excess of 1 steradian. It was designed as the hard X-ray monitor of the AGILE space mission, a small satellite of the Italian Space Agency devoted to image the gamma-ray sky in the 30 MeV - 50 GeV energy band. The AGILE mission was launched in a low-earth orbit on 23^{rd} April 2007. We present a systematic analysis of all the BeppoSAX data of SGR 1900+14. The observations spanning five years show that the source was brighter than usual on two occasions: ~20 days after the August 1998 giant flare and during the 10^5 sec long X-ray afterglow following the April 2001 intermediate flare. In the latter case, we explore the possibility of describing the observed short term softening only with a change of the temperature of a blackbody-like component. In the only BeppoSAX observation performed before the giant flare, the spectrum of the SGR 1900+14 persistent emission was significantly harder and possibly detected also above 10 keV with the PDS instrument. The XAA1.2 is a custom ASIC chip for silicon microstrip detectors adapted by Ideas for the SuperAGILE instrument on board the AGILE space mission. The chip is equipped with 128 input channels, each one containing a charge preamplifier, shaper, peak detector and stretcher. The most important features of the ASIC are the extended linearity, low noise and low power consumption. The XAA1.2 underwent extensive laboratory testing in order to study its commandability and functionality and evaluate its scientific performances. We present a systematic analysis of all the BeppoSAX data of SGR1900+14. We present a systematic analysis of all the BeppoSAX data of the soft gamma-ray repeater SGR 1900+14: these observations allowed us to study the long term properties of the source quiescent emission. In the observation carried out before the 1998 giant flare the spectrum in the 0.8-10 keV energy range was harder and there was evidence for a 20-150 keV emission, possibly associated with SGR 1900+14. This possible hard tail, if compared with the recent INTEGRAL detection of SGR 1900+14, has a harder spectrum (power-law photon index ~1.6 versus ~3) and a 20-100 keV flux ~4 times larger. In the last BeppoSAX observation (April 2002), while the source was entering the long quiescent period that lasted until 2006, the 2-10 keV flux was ~25% below the historical level. We also studied in detail the spectral evolution during the 2001 flare afterglow. A ~50 ks XMM-Newton observation of SGR 1900+14 has been carried out in September 2005, after almost three years during which no bursts were detected from this soft gamma-ray repeater. The 0.8-10 keV spectrum was well fit by a power law plus blackbody model with photon index 1.9+/-0.1, temperature kT=0.47+/-0.02 keV and N_H = (2.12+/-0.08)x10^22 cm^-2, similar to previous observations of this source. The flux was ~5x10^{-12} erg/cm2/s, a factor 2 dimmer than the typical value and the smallest ever seen from SGR 1900+14. The long term fading of the persistent emission has been interrupted by the recent burst reactivation of the source. A target of opportunity XMM-Newton observation performed in April 2006 showed a flux ~15% higher. This variation was not accompanied by significant changes in the spectrum, pulsed fraction and light curve profile. We searched for emission and absorption lines in the spectra of the two observations, with negative results and setting tight upper limits of 50-200 eV (3 sigma), depending on the assumed line energy and width, on the equivalent width of lines in the 1-9 keV range., Comment: accepted for publication on The Astrophysical Journal

An extensive theoretical literature predicts that X-ray Polarimetry can directly determine relevant physical and geometrical parameters of astrophysical sources, and discriminate between models further than allowed by spectral and timing data only. X-ray Polarimetry can also provide tests of Fundamental Physics. A high sensitivity polarimeter in the focal plane of a New Generation X-ray telescope could open this new window in the High Energy Sky., Comment: 8 pages 1 table 14 figures

The sky region containing the soft gamma-ray repeater SGR 1627-41 has been observed three times with XMM-Newton in February and September 2004. SGR 1627-41 has been detected with an absorbed flux of ~9x10^{-14} erg cm^{-2} s^{-1} (2-10 keV). For a distance of 11 kpc, this corresponds to a luminosity of ~3x10^{33} erg s^{-1}, the smallest ever observed for a Soft Gamma Repeater and possibly related to the long period of inactivity of this source. The observed flux is smaller than that seen with Chandra in 2001-2003, suggesting that the source was still fading and had not yet reached a steady quiescent level. The spectrum is equally well fit by a steep power law (photon index \~3.2) or by a blackbody with temperature kT~0.8 keV. We also report on the INTEGRAL transient IGR J16358-4726 that lies at ~10' from SGR 1627-41. SGR 1806-20 has been observed for more than 2 years with the INTEGRAL satellite. In this period the source went from a quiescent state into a very active one culminating in a giant flare on December 27 2004. Here we report on the properties of all the short bursts detected with INTEGRAL before the giant flare. We derive their number-intensity distribution and confirm the hardness-intensity correlation for the bursts found by Gotz et al. (2004a). Our sample includes a very bright outburst that occurred on October 5 2004, during which over one hundred bursts were emitted in 10 minutes, involving an energy release of 3 x 1E42 erg. We present the X-ray afterglow catalog of BeppoSAX from the launch of the satellite to the end of the mission. Thirty-three X-ray afterglows were securely identified based on their fading behavior out of 39 observations. We have extracted the continuum parameters (decay index, spectral index, flux, absorption) for all available afterglows. We point out a possible correlation between the X-ray afterglow luminosity and the energy emitted during the prompt $\gamma$-ray event. We do not detect a significant jet signature within the afterglows, implying a lower limit on the beaming angle, neither a standard energy release when X-ray fluxes are corrected for beaming. Our data support the hypothesis that the burst should be surrounded by an interstellar medium rather than a wind environment, and that this environment should be dense. This may be explained by a termination shock located near the burst progenitor. We finally point out that some dark bursts may be explained by an intrinsic faintness of the event, while others may be strongly absorbed., Comment: 24 pages, 12 figures. We report on the BeppoSAX and multiwavelength data analysis of the afterglow of Gamma-Ray Burst (GRB) 990123. Mainly due to its exceptional brightness, this is the only source for which the Wide Field Cameras have allowed an early detection of the X-ray afterglow between about 20 and 60 min after the GRB trigger. Besides, again for the first time, high-energy emission from the afterglow was detected up to 60 keV. The backwards extrapolation of the afterglow decay smoothly reconnects with the late GRB emission, thus indicating that both are consistent with being produced by the same phenomenon. For the X-ray afterglow we found a power-law decay with index alpha_X = 1.46 +/- 0.04; the spectrum has a power-law shape with photon index Gamma about 2. An extensive set of multiwavelength observations on the afterglow, collected from the literature and made during the BeppoSAX pointing, allowed constructing a Spectral Flux Distribution. We report on BeppoSAX simultaneous X- and gamma-ray observations of the bright GRB 990123. We present the broad-band spectrum of the prompt emission, including optical, X- and gamma-rays, confirming the suggestion that the emission mechanisms at low and high frequencies must have different physical origins. In the framework of the standard fireball model, we discuss the X-ray afterglow observed by the NFIs and its hard X-ray emission up to 60 keV several hours after the burst, detected for about 20 ks by the PDS. Considering the 2-10 keV and optical light curves, the 0.1-60 keV spectrum during the 20 ks in which the PDS signal was present and the 8.46 GHz upper limits, we find that the multi-wavelength observations cannot be readily accommodated by basic afterglow models. While the temporal and spectral behavior of the optical afterglow is possibly explained by a synchrotron cooling frequency between the optical and the X-ray energy band during the NFIs observations, in X-rays this assumption only accounts for the slope of the 2-10 keV light curve, but not for the flatness of the 0.1-60 keV spectrum. Including the contribution of Inverse Compton (IC) scattering, we solve the problem of the flat X-ray spectrum and justify the hard X-ray emission; we suggest that the lack of a significant detection of 15-60 keV emission in the following 75 ks and last 70 ks spectra, should be related to poorer statistics rather than to an important suppression of IC contribution. However, considering also the radio band data, we find the 8.46 GHz upper limits violated. On the other hand, leaving unchanged the emission mechanism requires modifying the hydrodynamics by invoking an ambient medium whose density rises rapidly with radius and by having the shock losing energy. The low energy (<10 keV) X-ray emission of the Soft Gamma-ray Repeater SGR1806-20 has been studied by means of four XMM-Newton observations carried out in the last two years, the latter performed in response to a strong sequence of hard X-ray bursts observed on 2004 October 5. The source was caught in different states of activity: over the 2003-2004 period the 2-10 keV flux doubled with respect to the historical level observed previously. The long term raise in luminosity was accompanied by a gradual hardening of the spectrum, with the power law photon index decreasing from 2.2 to 1.5, and by a growth of the bursting activity. The pulse period measurements obtained in the four observations are consistent with an average spin-down rate of 5.5x10e-10 s/s, higher than the values observed in the previous years. The long-term behavior of SGR1806-20 exhibits the correlation between spectral hardness and spin-down rate previously found only by comparing the properties of different sources (both SGRs and Anomalous X-ray Pulsars). The best quality spectrum (obtained on 6 September 2004) cannot be fitted by a single power law, but it requires an additional blackbody component (kT=0.79 keV, R_BB = 1.9 (d/15 kpc)^2 km), similar to the spectra observed in other SGRs and in Anomalous X-ray Pulsars. No spectral lines were found in the persistent emission, with equivalent width upper limits in the range 30-110 eV. Marginal evidence for an absorption feature at 4.2 keV is present in the cumulative spectrum of 69 bursts detected in September-October 2004., Comment: Revised version (several changes in text, figures and tables). In this paper we present BeppoSax and XMM observations of two long Gamma-ray bursts, the X-ray rich event of December 11, 2001 (GRB011211) and the hard and very bright event of November 21, 2001 (GRB011121). In both events we find evidence of a late X-ray burst, taking place several minutes after the prompt emission. The temporal and spectral behaviour of this phenomenon suggest that it represents the onset of the afterglow. Broad band spectral modelling of the afterglow indicate that the fireball evolution in the December burst takes place in a ISM environment. On the contrary in the November burst the wind case is revealed by an X-ray decay slower than that observed in the optical ($\delta_{\rm X}=1.29\pm0.04$ vs $\delta_{\rm O}=1.66\pm0.06$). The wind profile should change into a constant density profile at large radii, in order to reconcile late-time radio data with a jet. Two other results are obtained for this burst. An X-ray burst is preceding by about 30 s the much harder GRB. Contrary to the prediction of simple models of precursor activity for collapsars, its spectrum is not consistent with a black body. Finally, a substantial absorption column ($\NH=(7\pm2)\times10^{22}$ cm$^{-2}$) is detected during the early part of the prompt emission. This is much greater than that of the wind, and it is thus likely associated with the region surrounding the burst., Comment: Accepted for publication in Astrophysical Journal

We present Interplanetary Network (IPN) detection and localization information for 211 gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) observed as untriggered events by the Burst and Transient Source Experiment (BATSE), and published in catalogs by Kommers et al. (2001) and Stern et al. (2001). IPN confirmations have been obtained by analyzing the data from 11 experiments. For any given burst observed by BATSE and one other distant spacecraft, arrival time analysis (or ``triangulation'') results in an annulus of possible arrival directions whose half-width varies between 14 arcseconds and 5.6 degrees, depending on the intensity, time history, and arrival direction of the burst, as well as the distance between the spacecraft. This annulus generally intersects the BATSE error circle, resulting in a reduction of the area of up to a factor of ~650. When three widely separated spacecraft observed a burst, the result is an error box whose area is as much as 30000 times smaller than that of the BATSE error circle. Because the IPN instruments are considerably less sensitive than BATSE, they generally did not detect the weakest untriggered bursts, but did detect the more intense ones which failed to trigger BATSE when the trigger was disabled. In a few cases, we have been able to identify the probable origin of bursts as soft gamma repeaters. The vast majority of the IPN-detected events, however, are GRBs, and the confirmation of them validates many of the procedures utilized to detect BATSE untriggered bursts., Comment: Minor revisions. We report on observation results of the prompt X- and gamma-ray emission from GRB011211. This event was detected with the Gamma-Ray Burst Monitor and one of the Wide Field Cameras aboard the BeppoSAX satellite. The optical counterpart to the GRB was soon identified and its redshift determined (z = 2.140), while with the XMM-Newton satellite, the X-ray afterglow emission was detected. Evidence of soft X-ray emission lines was reported by Reeves et al. (2002), but not confirmed by other authors. In investigating the spectral evolution of the prompt emission we find the possible evidence of a transient absorption feature at 6.9^{+0.6}_{-0.5} keV during the rise of the primary event. The significance of the feature is derived with non parametric tests and numerical simulations, finding a chance probability which ranges from 3x10^{-3} down to 4x10^{-4}. The feature shows a Gaussian profile and an equivalent width of 1.2^{+0.5}_{-0.6} keV. We discuss our results and their possible interpretation., Comment: 23 pages, 3 Tables, 6 Figures. We report on the X-ray observations of the X-ray flash (XRF) which occurred on 2002 April 27, three days before BeppoSAX was switched off. The event was detected with the BeppoSAX Wide Field Cameras but not with the Gamma ray Burst Monitor. A follow-up observation with the BeppoSAX Narrow Field Instruments was soon performed and a candidate afterglow source was discovered. We present the results obtained. We also include the results obtained from the observations of the XRF field with the Chandra X-ray satellite. The spectral analysis of the prompt emission shows that the peak energy of the EF(E) spectrum is lower than 5.5 keV, with negligible spectral evolution. The X-ray afterglow spectrum is consistent with a power law model with photon index of about 2, while the 2-10 keV flux fades as a power law with a decay index -1.33. Both these indices are typical of GRBs. A very marginal excess around 4.5-5 keV is found in the afterglow spectrum measured by BeppoSAX . As for many GRBs, the extrapolation of the 2-10 keV fading law back to the time of the prompt emission is consistent with the X-ray flux measured during the second part of the event. We report observation results of the prompt X-- and $\gamma$--ray emission from GRB 000528. This event was detected with the Gamma-Ray Burst Monitor and one of the two Wide Field Cameras aboard the BeppoSAX satellite. The GRB was promptly followed on with the BeppoSAX Narrow Field Instruments and with ground optical and radio telescopes. The X-ray afterglow source was identified, but no optical or radio counterpart found. We report here results from the prompt and afterglow emission analysis. The main feature derived from spectral evolution of the prompt emission is a high hydrogen-equivalent column density with evidence of its decrease with time. We model this behavior in terms of a time-dependent photoionization of the local circum-burst medium, finding that a compact and dense environment is required by the data. We also find a fading of the late part of the 2--10 keV prompt emission which is consistent with afterglow emission. We report on the X-ray spectral properties of 10 short bursts from SGR1900+14 observed with the Narrow Field Instruments onboard BeppoSAX in the hours following the intermediate flare of 2001 April 18. Burst durations are typically shorter than 1 s, and often show significant temporal structure on time scales as short as $\sim$10 ms. Burst spectra from the MECS and PDS instruments were fit across an energy range from 1.5 to above 100 keV. We fit several spectral models and assumed Nh values smaller than 5$\times 10^{22}$ cm$^{-2}$, as derived from observations in the persistent emission. Our results show that the widely used optically thin thermal bremsstrahlung law provides acceptable spectral fits for energies higher than 15 keV, but severely overestimated the flux at lower energies. Similar behavior had been observed several years ago in short bursts from SGR 1806-20, suggesting that the rollover of the spectrum at low energies is a universal property of this class of sources. Alternative spectral models - such as two blackbodies or a cut-off power law - provide significantly better fits to the broad band spectral data, and show that all the ten bursts have spectra consistent with the same spectral shape., Comment: Accepted for Publication in The Astrophysical Journal

GRB 020410 is by far the longest gamma-ray burst (with a duration of about 1600 s) to have been followed up from the X-ray through the radio regime. Afterglow emission was detected in X-rays and at optical wavelengths while no emission was detected at 8 GHz brighter than 120 microJy. The decaying X-ray afterglow, back extrapolated to 11 hr after the burst, had a flux of 7.9 10^-12 cgs (2-10 keV); the brightest detected so far. No direct redshift determination is available yet for this GRB, but according to the empirical relationship between the peak energy in the \nu F_\nu spectrum and the isotropic energy output, z is constrained in the range 0.9-1.5. The reconstructed optical afterglow light curve implies at least two breaks in the simple power-law decay. This may be related to emergence of a SN, or refreshment of the external shock by a variation in the circumstellar medium. By comparing the backward extrapolation of the 2-10 keV afterglow decay it is shown that the long duration of the prompt emission is not related to an early onset of afterglow emission, but must be related to prolonged activity of the ``central engine''., Comment: 8 pages, 6 figures; submitted to A&A

We report on spectral and temporal results of the 40-700 keV observations, obtained with the Gamma-Ray Burst Monitor (GRBM) on board BeppoSAX, of the two large flares from the Soft Gamma-ray Repeater SGR1900+14 occurred on August 27, 1998 and April 18, 2001. From their intensity, fluence and duration, the first one was classified as "giant" and the second as "intermediate". The spectral results have been obtained with an improved response function of the GRBM. We find that the two events have similar spectral properties, but different temporal properties. The major difference concerns the time profiles of the light curves, whereas the lack of evidence in the 2001 flare for the erratic time variability found at high frequencies (10-1000 Hz) in the 1998 flare could be ascribed to lower counting statistics. We present data from the first of six monitoring Open Time observations of GRS 1915+105 undertaken with the orbiting INTEGRAL satellite. The source was clearly detected with all three X-ray and gamma-ray instruments on board. GRS 1915+105 was in a highly variable state, as demonstrated by the JEM X-2 and ISGRI lightcurves. These and simultaneous RXTE/PCA lightcurves point to a novel type of variability pattern in the source. In addition, we fit the combined JEM X-2 and ISGRI spectrum between 3-300 keV with a disk blackbody + powerlaw model leading to typical parameter values found earlier at similar luminosity levels. A new transient, IGR J19140+098, was discovered during the present observation., Comment: 5 pages, 7 figures. A long Gamma-Ray Burst (GRB) was detected with the instruments on board the INTEGRAL satellite on January 31 2003. Although most of the GRB, which lasted $\sim$150 seconds, occurred during a satellite slew, the automatic software of the INTEGRAL Burst Alert System was able to detect it in near-real time. Here we report the results obtained with the IBIS instrument, which detected GRB 030131 in the 15 keV - 200 keV energy range, and ESO/VLT observations of its optical transient. The burst displays a complex time profile with numerous peaks. The peak spectrum can be described by a single power law with photon index $\Gamma\simeq$1.7 and has a flux of $\sim$2 photons cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$ in the 20-200 keV energy band. The high sensitivity of IBIS has made it possible for the first time to perform detailed time-resolved spectroscopy of a GRB with a fluence of 7$\times10^{-6}$ erg cm$^{-2}$ (20-200 keV)., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A, 5 pages, 4 figures, latex

We report on observations of SGR 1900+14 made with the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer (RXTE) and BeppoSAX during the April 2001 burst activation of the source. Using these data, we measure the spindown torque on the star and confirm earlier findings that the torque and burst activity are not directly correlated. We compare the X-ray pulse profile to the gamma-ray profile during the April 18 intermediate flare and show that (i) their shapes are similar and (ii) the gamma-ray profile aligns closely in phase with the X-ray pulsations. The good phase alignment of the gamma-ray and X-ray profiles suggests that there was no rapid spindown following this flare of the magnitude inferred for the August 27 giant flare. After nearly two years of quiescence, the soft gamma-ray repeater SGR 1900+14 again became burst-active on April 18 2001, when it emitted a large flare, preceded by few weak and soft short bursts. After having detected the X and gamma prompt emission of the flare, BeppoSAX pointed its narrow field X-ray telescopes to the source in less than 8 hours. In this paper we present an analysis of the data from this and from a subsequent BeppoSAX observation, as well as from a set of RossiXTE observations. Our data show the detection of an X-ray afterglow from the source, most likely related to the large hard X-ray flare. In fact, the persistent flux from the source, in 2-10 keV, was initially found at a level $\sim$5 times higher than the usual value. Assuming an underlying persistent (constant) emission, the decay of the excess flux can be reasonably well described by a t$^{-0.9}$ law. A temporal feature - a $\sim$half a day long bump - is observed in the decay light curve approximately one day after the burst onset. This feature is unprecedented in SGR afterglows. GRB 020321 is a faint GRB that received wide follow-up attention in X-rays (BeppoSAX/NFI, Chandra/ACIS-S, XMM-Newton), radio (ATCA) and optical (ESO, HST). We identify a weak X-ray afterglow by a combined study of the Chandra and XMM-Newton observations. Its decay index of 1.2 is typical for GRB afterglows. Inside the 4"-accurate error box there is a weak optical counterpart candidate with a much shallower decay index., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, to be published in Proc. The error box of GRB980425 has been observed by XMM-Newton in March 2002, with the aim of measuring the late epoch X-ray emission of the supernova 1998bw and of clarifying its supposed association with the GRB itself. We present here the preliminary results obtained with the EPIC PN camera. Our observations confirm the association between SN 1998bw and GRB980425. The EPIC PN measurement of the SN 1998bw flux is significantly below the extrapolation of the power-law temporal trend fitted to the BeppoSAX points and implies a faster temporal decay. We report on the prompt and afterglow emission observations of the dark burst GRB010214 with BeppoSAX. The prompt emission shows possible evidence of variable absorption from N_H = 3.0^{+5.1}_{-2.0} x 10^23 cm-2 in the first 6 s of the event to a value consistent with the Galactic column density (N_H^(G) = 2.66 x 10^20 cm-2) in the GRB direction. An X-ray afterglow emission in the 2-10 keV energy band was detected with BeppoSAX, but an analogue search at lower wavelengths (optical, IR and radio) was unsuccessful. The X-ray afterglow spectrum is consistent with a power-law with Galactic absorption. The light curve shows a complex decay, if the tail of the prompt emission is assumed as the onset of the afterglow: if the origin of the afterglow is coincident with the GRB onset, a bump before ~ 3 x 10^4 s is inferred, while if the afterglow is assumed to start later, a steepening of the power-law light curve at t ~ 3 x 10^4 s is deduced. We discuss these results in the light of the current models of afterglows and the possible origin of the GRB darkness. We have examined the complete set of X-ray afterglow observations of dark and optically bright GRBs performed by BeppoSAX until February 2001. X-ray afterglows are detected in 90% of the cases. We do not find significant differences in the X-ray spectral shape, in particular no higher X-ray absorption in GRBs without optical transient (dark GRBs) compared to GRBs with optical transient (OTGRBs). Rather, we find that the 1.6-10 keV flux of OTGRBs is on average about 5 times larger than that of the dark GRBs. A K-S test shows that this difference is significant at 99.8% probability. Under the assumption that dark and OTGRB have similar spectra, this could suggest that the first are uncaught in the optical band because they are just faint sources. In order to test this hypothesis, we have determined the optical-to-X ray flux ratios of the sample. OTGRBs show a remarkably narrow distribution of flux ratios, which corresponds to an average optical-to-x spectral index 0.794\pm 0.054. We find that, while 75% of dark GRBs have flux ratio upper limits still consistent with those of OT GRBs, the remaining 25% are 4 - 10 times weaker in optical than in X-rays. The significance of this result is equal to or higher than 2.6 sigma. If this sub-population of dark GRBs were constituted by objects assimilable to OTGRBs, they should have shown optical fluxes higher than upper limits actually found. We discuss the possible causes of their behaviour, including a possible occurrence in high density clouds or origin at very high redshift and a connection with ancient, Population III stars., Comment: 19 pages, 5 figures. X-ray Polarimetry is almost as old as X-ray Astronomy. Since the first discovery of X-ray sources theoretical analysis suggested that a high degree of linear polarization could be expected due either to the, extremely non thermal, emission mechanism or to the transfer of radiation in highly asymmetric systems. The actual implementation of this subtopic was, conversely, relatively deceiving. This is mainly due to the limitation of the conventional techniques based on the Bragg diffraction at 45deg, or on Thomson scattering around 90deg. Acually no X-ray Polarimeter has been launched since 25 years. Nevertheless the expectations from such measurement on several astrophysical targets including High and Low Mass X-Ray Binaries, isolated neutron Stars, Galactic and Extragalactic Black Holes is extremely attractive. We developed a new technique to measure the linear polarization of X-ray sources. It is based on the visualization of photoelectron tracks in a, finely subdivided, gas filled detector (micropattern). The initial direction of the photoelectron is derived and from the angular distribution of the tracks the amount and angle of polarization is computed. This technique can find an optimal exploitation in the focus of XEUS-1. Even in a very conservative configuration (basically the already existing prototype) the photoelectric polarimeter could perform polarimetry at % level on many AGNs.
