Abstract

Based on a new approach to the detection of radio transients associated with extensive air showers induced by ultra high energy cosmic rays, the experimental apparatus CODALEMA is in operation, measuring about 1 event per day corresponding to an energy threshold ~ 5. 10^16 eV. Its performance makes possible for the first time the study of radio-signal features on an event-by-event basis. The sampling of the magnitude of the electric field along a 600 meters axis is analyzed. It shows that the electric field lateral spread is around 250 m (FWHM). The possibility to determine with radio both arrival directions and shower core positions is discussed., Comment: Accepted for publication in Astroparticle Physics

Abstract

We have measured the gamma-ray fluxes of the blazars Mrk 421 and Mrk 501 in the energy range between 50 and 350 GeV (1.2 to 8.3 x 10^25 Hz). The detector, called CELESTE, used first 40, then 53 heliostats of the former solar facility "Themis" in the French Pyrenees to collect Cherenkov light generated in atmospheric particle cascades. The signal from Mrk 421 is often strong. We compare its flux with previously published multi-wavelength studies and infer that we are straddling the high energy peak of the spectral energy distribution. The signal from Mrk 501 in 2000 was weak (3.4 sigma). We obtain an upper limit on the flux from 1ES 1426+428 of less than half that of the Crab flux near 100 GeV. Abstract

The principle and performances of the CODALEMA experimental device, set up to study the possibility of high energy cosmic rays radio detection, are presented. Radio transient signals associated to cosmic rays have been identified, for which arrival directions and shower's electric field topologies have been extracted from the antenna signals. The measured rate, about 1 event per day, corresponds to an energy threshold around 5.10^16 eV. These results allow to determine the perspectives offered by the present experimental design for radiodetection of UHECR at a larger scale., Comment: 4 pages and 3 figures. Abstract

Taking advantage of recent technical progress which has overcome some of the difficulties encountered in the 1960's in the radio detection of extensive air showers induced by ultra high energy cosmic rays (UHECR), a new experimental apparatus (CODALEMA) has been built and operated. We will present the characteristics of this device and the analysis techniques that have been developed for observing electrical transients associated with cosmic rays. We find a collection of events for which both time and arrival direction coincidences between particle and radio signals are observed. The counting rate corresponds to shower energies $\geq 5\times 10^{16}$ eV. Abstract

Firm evidence for a radio emission counterpart of cosmic ray air showers is presented. By the use of an antenna array set up in coincidence with ground particle detectors, we find a collection of events for which both time and arrival direction coincidences between particle and radio signals are observed. The counting rate corresponds to shower energies $\gtrsim 5\times 10^{16}$ eV. These results open overwhelming perspectives to complete existing detection methods for the observation of ultra high-energy cosmic rays., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures

Abstract

We present the characteristics and performance of a demonstration experiment devoted to the observation of ultra high- energy cosmic ray extensive air showers using a radiodetection technique. In a first step, one antenna narrowed band filtered acting as trigger, with a 4 $\sigma$ threshold above sky background-level, was used to tag any radio transient in coincidence on the antenna array. Recently, the addition of 4 particle detectors has allowed us to observe cosmic ray events in coincidence with antennas.

Abstract

We have converted the former solar electrical plant THEMIS (French Pyrenees) into an atmospheric Cherenkov detector called CELESTE, which records gamma rays above 30 GeV (7E24 Hz). Here we present the first sub-100 GeV detection by a ground based telescope of a gamma ray source, the Crab nebula, in the energy region between satellite measurements and imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes. At our analysis threshold energy of 60 +/- 20 GeV we measure a gamma ray rate of 6.1 +/- 0.8 per minute. Allowing for 30% systematic uncertainties and a 30% error on the energy scale yields an integral gamma ray flux of I(E>60 GeV) = 6.2^{+5.3}_{-2.3} E-6 photons m^-2 s^-1. The analysis methods used to obtain the gamma ray signal from the raw data are detailed. In addition, we determine the upper limit for pulsed emission to be <12% of the Crab flux at the 99% confidence level, in the same energy range. Our result indicates that if the power law observed by EGRET is attenuated by a cutoff of form e^{-E/E_0} then E_0 < 26 GeV. This is the lowest energy probed by a Cherenkov detector and leaves only a narrow range unexplored beyond the energy range studied by EGRET., Comment: 34 pages, accepted by the Astrophysical Journal

Abstract

Three months of data taken by the Engineering Array Surface Detector of the Pierre Auger Observatory have been analyzed with the aim of setting a procedure for the study of showers at E_0 ~ 10^18 eV. We present the results, concerning: (i) the selection procedure and the check of its efficiency; (ii) the event rate and its stability; (iii) the characteristics of such events (i.e., angular direction, energy estimator S(1000), rise time vs core distance, correlation with pressure) showing their consistency with the expectations. Abstract

The Pierre Auger Southern Observatory in Argentina has begun taking data as it is being developed up to a final enclosed area of 3000 square kilometres. A key aspect of the project is to provide information on the origin of the highest energy cosmic rays through understanding the arrival directions of those particles. To avoid claims of a spurious anisotropy detection because trials have not been properly accounted, the Auger Collaboration has agreed 'a priori' to the analysis prescription presented here. It specifies the following: 1. The accumulation time for the (future) data set to be analyzed. 2. The anisotropy 'targets', each assigned a chance probability level. 3. The analysis procedure for each trial. A positive result will be claimed for any target search only if its chance probability is less than its assigned level. The levels are chosen so that the total chance probability for one or more positive results is 0.001. Exploratory searches beyond this prescription will be encouraged, but the Auger Collaboration will not assign any confidence level to anisotropies that may be discovered that way. Any such discovery would identify a good target for a prescription to be used with a subsequent Auger data set., 4 pages

Abstract

The absolute calibration of an air fluorescence detector (FD) is an important element in correctly determining the energy of detected cosmic rays. The absolute calibration relates the flux of photons of a given wavelength at the detector aperture to the electronic signal recorded by the FD data acquisition system. For the Auger FDs, the primary absolute calibration method uses a diffusive surface which is placed in front of a telescope aperture to uniformly illuminate the telescope field of view with a known light signal. This single-wavelength measurement (375 nm) will be made at intervals of several months until the stability of the telescopes is determined. The relative wavelength dependence of the calibration is determined through independent measurements. The error in absolute calibration at a single wavelength is estimated to be less than 10%. Two other absolute calibration methods are used to provide an independent verification of the primary measurement. The stability of the calibration with time is monitored nightly by a relative calibration system. In this paper we will provide descriptions of the absolute and relative calibration methods used by the Auger air fluorescence observatory. Abstract

The Pierre Auger Observatory is a``hybrid'' UHECR detector. The surface detector (SD) and air fluorescence detector (FD) of the observatory are designed for observation of cosmic ray showers in coincidence, with a 10% duty cycle. The resulting data are expected to be superior in quality to those of either the SD or FD operating individually. Hybrid operation, triggering, data acquisition, and event reconstruction were successfully demonstrated during the prototype phase of the project. This paper focuses on 75 hybrid events recorded during a four month period of running with the prototype detectors in late 2001 and early 2002. The geometric technique for reconstruction of the hybrid events is described and its advantages over the traditional FD-only method are demonstrated. Abstract

The CELESTE experiment uses the heliostats of an old solar farm in the French Pyrenees to detect gamma ray air showers by the atmospheric Cerenkov technique. CELESTE has been operating since November 1999 with an array of 40 heliostats fully instrumented with 1GHz flash ADCs. Significant advances have been made in the detector simulations and in the data analysis techniques. We report here on results from recent observations of the Crab nebula above an energy threshold of 50GeV. Abstract

The CELESTE experiment uses the heliostats of an old solar farm in the French Pyrenees to detect gamma ray air showers by the atmospheric Cerenkov technique. Observations of the TeV blazar Markarian 421 have been made with the fully instrumented CELESTE experiment since December 1999. The detection of gamma ray emission from this source at energies greater than 50 GeV is presented here. A comparison is made with the light curve from the CAT experiment at the same site which shows correlation between the observed gamma ray fluxes and the detection of short duration flaring episodes., 4 pages, 4 figures. Abstract

The THEMISTOCLE array of 18 Cherenkov detectors which has a 3 TeV gamma energy threshold, has detected a signal from the Crab nebula at a 5.8 standard deviation level. Information on the energy spectrum is obtained in the range 3–15 TeV. The integrated flux can be fitted with the form, Φ (> E) = (3.7 ± 0.5) × 10-12 (E/5)-−1.5 ± 0.20 cm−2 s−1 (E in TeV) compatible with the extrapolation of results at lower energies. The Crab signal is used to measure the angular resolution of the multi-telescope technique. The value obtained is 2.3 mr (0.15°) in agreement with the results of simulations, and confirms the interest of this new method for multi-TeV gamma-ray detection.

Abstract

The surface detector (SD) array of the southern Pierre Auger Observatory will consist of a triangular grid of 1600 water Cherenkov tanks with 1.5 km spacing. For zenith angles less than 60deg the primary energy can be estimated from the signal S(1000) at a distance of about 1000m from the shower axis, solely on basis of SD data. A suitable lateral distribution function (LDF) S(r) is fitted to the signals recorded by the water tanks and used to quantify S(1000). Therefore, knowledge of the LDF is a fundamental requirement for determining the energy of the primary particle. The Engineering Array (EA), a prototype facility consisting of 32 tanks, has taken data continuously since late 2001. Abstract

The Pierre Auger Observatory is designed to elucidate the origin and nature of Ultra High Energy Cosmic Rays using a hybrid detection technique. A first run of data taking with a prototype version of both detectors (the so called Engineering Array) took place in 2001-2002, allowing the Collaboration to evaluate the performance of the two detector systems and to approach an analysis strategy. In this contribution, after a brief description of the system, we will report some results on the behavior of the Fluorescence Detector (FD) Prototype. Performance studies, such as measurements of noise, sensitivity and duty cycle, will be presented. We will illustrate a preliminary analysis of selected air showers. Abstract

The detectors of the surface array of the Pierre Auger Observatory are water Cherenkov tanks. The signals from each tank are read out using three photomultipliers. The energy of the primary particle is inferred from signal densities and requires good linearity of the PMTs and a large dynamic range. The absolute time of arrival of the shower front at each tank is obtained from the Global Positioning System (GPS) with a resolution of about 10 ns, ensuring an accurate primary angular reconstruction. Additionally, it is intended to use the rise time and shape of the signals to constrain the nature of the primary particle: this sets further requirements on the signal processing.
