We present a mechanism for chondrules to stick together by means of compaction of a porous dust rim they sweep up as they move through the dusty nebula gas. It is shown that dust aggregates formed out of micron-sized grains stick to chondrules, forming a porous dust rim. When chondrules collide, this dust can be compacted by means of rolling motions within the porous dust layer. This mechanism dissipates the collisional energy, compacting the rim and allowing chondrules to stick. The structure of the obtained chondrule-dust agglomerates (referred to as compounds) then consists of three phases: chondrules, porous dust, and dust that has been compacted by collisions. Subsequently, these compounds accrete their own dust and collide with other compounds. The evolution of the compound size distribution and the relative importance of the phases is calculated by a Monte Carlo code. Growth ends, and a simulation is terminated when all the dust in the compounds has been compacted. Numerous runs are performed, reflecting the uncertainty in the physical conditions at the chondrule formation time. It is found that compounds can grow by 1-2 orders of magnitudes in radius, upto dm-sizes when turbulence levels are low. However, relative velocities associated with radial drift form a barrier for further growth. Earlier findings that the dust sweep-up by chondrules is proportional to their sizes are confirmed. In this note we present complete, closed-form expressions for random relative velocities between colliding particles of arbitrary size in nebula turbulence. These results are exact for very small particles (those with stopping times much shorter than the large eddy overturn time) and are also surprisingly accurate in complete generality (that is, also apply for particles with stopping times comparable to, or much longer than, the large eddy overturn time). We discuss the results of laboratory measurements and theoretical models concerning the aggregation of dust in protoplanetary disks, as the initial step toward planet formation. Small particles easily stick when they collide and form aggregates with an open, often fractal structure, depending on the growth process. Larger particles are still expected to grow at collision velocities of about 1m/s. Experiments also show that, after an intermezzo of destructive velocities, high collision velocities above 10m/s on porous materials again lead to net growth of the target. Considerations of dust-gas interactions show that collision velocities for particles not too different in surface-to-mass ratio remain limited up to sizes about 1m, and growth seems to be guaranteed to reach these sizes quickly and easily. For meter sizes, coupling to nebula turbulence makes destructive processes more likely. Global aggregation models show that in a turbulent nebula, small particles are swept up too fast to be consistent with observations of disks. An extended phase may therefore exist in the nebula during which the small particle component is kept alive through collisions driven by turbulence which frustrates growth to planetesimals until conditions are more favorable for one or more reasons., Comment: Protostars and Planets V (PPV) review. 18 pages, 5 figures

Solid material in a protoplanetary nebula is subject to vigorous redistribution processes relative to the nebula gas. Meter-sized particles drift rapidly inwards near the nebula midplane, and material evaporates when the particles cross a condensation/evaporation boundary. The material cannot be removed as fast in its vapor form as it is being supplied in solid form, so its concentration increases locally by a large factor (more than an order of magnitude under nominal conditions). As time goes on, the vapor phase enhancement propagates for long distances inside the evaporation boundary (potentially all the way in to the star). Meanwhile, material is enhanced in its solid form over a characteristic lengthscale outside the evaporation boundary. This effect is applicable to any condensible (water, silicates, {\it etc.}). Three distinct radial enhancement/depletion regimes can be discerned by use of a simple model. Meteoritics applications include oxygen fugacity and isotopic variations, as well as isotopic homogenization in silicates. Planetary system applications include more robust enhancement of solids in Jupiter's core formation region than previously suggested. Populations of compositionally distinct particles are fundamental components of undifferentiated chondritic meteorites. Many theories explain the formation of chondrites, one class of which includes mechanisms for sorting the component particles in the solar nebula prior to their accretion. Mechanisms include sorting by mass, turbulent concentration, X-winds, and photophoresis, which will produce characteristic distributions of observable properties such as particle size. Distinguishing processes that occur in specific astrophysical environments requires characterization of particle types, which include refractory Ca-Al-rich Inclusions (CAIs) and less-refractory chondrules. Previous investigations of modal abundances of CAIs and chondrules exist, but differences within and between these two groups, both of which are made up of diverse subgroups with different thermal histories and chemical compositions, remain mostly unstudied. The presence of rims, a significant event occurring after the formation of at least some chondrules, have also yet to be considered with respect to sorting. Here we present the sizes of CAIs and chondrules in Allende with attention to the smallest sizes, subgroups, and particle rims.

The initial accretion of primitive bodies (here, asteroids in particular) from freely-floating nebula particles remains problematic. Traditional growth-by-sticking models encounter a formidable "meter-size barrier" (or even a mm-to-cm-size barrier) in turbulent nebulae, making the preconditions for so-called "streaming instabilities" difficult to achieve even for so-called "lucky" particles. Even if growth by sticking could somehow breach the meter size barrier, turbulent nebulae present further obstacles through the 1-10km size range. On the other hand, nonturbulent nebulae form large asteroids too quickly to explain long spreads in formation times, or the dearth of melted asteroids. Theoretical understanding of nebula turbulence is itself in flux; recent models of MRI (magnetically-driven) turbulence favor low-or- no-turbulence environments, but purely hydrodynamic turbulence is making a comeback, with two recently discovered mechanisms generating robust turbulence which do not rely on magnetic fields at all. An important clue regarding planetesimal formation is an apparent 100km diameter peak in the pre-depletion, pre-erosion mass distribution of asteroids; scenarios leading directly from independent nebula particulates to large objects of this size, which avoid the problematic m-km size range, could be called "leapfrog" scenarios. The leapfrog scenario we have studied in detail involves formation of dense clumps of aerodynamically selected, typically mm-size particles in turbulence, which can under certain conditions shrink inexorably on 100-1000 orbit timescales and form 10-100km diameter sandpile planetesimals. There is evidence that at least the ordinary chondrite parent bodies were initially composed entirely of a homogeneous mix of such particles. Thus, while they are arcane, turbulent concentration models acting directly on chondrule size particles are worthy of deeper study. The typical sizes of planetesimals and the rate of their formation can be estimated using a statistical model with properties inferred from large numerical simulations of turbulence. Nebula turbulence is described by its Reynolds number Re = (L/eta)(exp 4/3), where L = H alpha(exp 1/2) is the largest eddy scale, H is the nebula gas vertical scale height, alpha the turbulent viscosity parameter, and eta is the Kolmogorov or smallest scale in turbulence (typically about 1km), with eddy turnover time t(sub eta). In the nebula, Re is far larger than any numerical simulation can handle, so some physical arguments are needed to extend the results of numerical simulations to nebula conditions. In this paper, we report new physics to be incorporated into our statistical models.

CaAl rich refractory mineral inclusions (CAIs) found at 1 - 10% mass fraction in primitive chondrites appear to be several million years older than the dominant (chondrule) components in the same parent bodies. A prevalent concern is that it is difficult to retain CAIs for this long against gas-drag-induced radial drift into the sun. We assess a hot inner (turbulent) nebula context for CAI formation, using analytical models of nebula evolution and particle diffusion. We show that outward radial diffusion in a weakly turbulent nebula can prevent significant numbers of CAI-size particles from being lost into the sun for times of 1 - 3 x 10(exp 6) years. To match the CAI abundances quantitatively, we advocate an enhancement of the inner hot nebula in silicate-forming material, due to rapid inward migration of very primitive, silicate and carbon rich, meter-sized objects. 'Combustion' of the carbon into CO would make the CAI formation environment more reduced than solar, as certain observations imply. Abundant CO might also play a role in mass-independent chemical fractionation of oxygen isotopes as seen in CAIs and associated primitive, high-temperature condensates.

Chondrite constituents display signs of aerodynamic sorting. In prior work we have shown that plausible conditions of nebula turbulence aerodynamically select chondrule-sized particles for strong concentration into zones 5-6 orders of magnitude denser than average. We refer to this process as Turbulent Concentration (TC). The TC hypothesis also predicts a particle size distribution within densely concentrated zones which is in very good agreement with that of chondrules; disaggregated from CV chondrites by Paque and Cuzzi and, from an LL UOC, by Hughes. Here we present results from the TC hypothesis relating to other aspects of the properties of chondrules and chondrites specifically, the thickness of fine-grained rims, which am often referred to as 'accretion rims'. The physical structure of primitive (chondritic) meteorites, even after some geological processing and modification, is thought by most to contain clues as to the first stage of accretion of solid matter into objects that might be called planetesimals. However, theoretical understanding of the processes responsible for this important stage is shaky. We note what we believe are fundamental obstacles for the Goldreich-Ward version of rapid and direct planetesimal formation via gravitational instability in a settled particle layer, and describe an alternative scenario which might lead from grainy nebula gas to primitive planetesimals in a way that has intriguing connections to the meteorite evidence.

Turbulence is known to possess structure on many scales. The largest or integral scale L is usually taken to be the largest dimension of the system. Two different turbulent regimes are likely to be of importance. Early stage convective turbulence in a hot nebula probably extends over the entire nebula scale height, and probably has typical eddy frequency comparable to the orbit frequency. At a later stage, midplane shear layer turbulence can be driven by the presence of a differently rotating, densely settled particle layer, with different length and timescales.
