We present a detailed radio morphological study and spectral analysis of the wide-angle-tail radio source 4C +24.36 associated with the dominant galaxy in the relaxed galaxy cluster AWM 4. Our study is based on new high sensitivity GMRT observations at 235 MHz, 327 MHz and 610 MHz, and on literature and archival data at other frequencies. We find that the source major axis is likely oriented at a small angle with respect to the plane of the sky. The wide-angle-tail morphology can be reasonably explained by adopting a simple hydrodynamical model in which both ram pressure (driven by the motion of the host galaxy) and buoyancy forces contribute to bend the radio structure. The spectral index progressively steepens along the source major axis from $\alpha \sim$0.3 in the region close to the radio nucleus to beyond 1.5 in the lobes. The results of the analysis of the spectral index image allow us to derive an estimate of the radiative age of the source of $\sim$ 160 Myr. The cluster X-ray emitting gas has a relaxed morphology and short cooling time, but its temperature profile is isothermal out to at least 160 kpc from the centre. Therefore we seek evidence of energy ejection from the central AGN to prevent catastrophic cooling. We find that the energy injected by 4C +24.36 in the form of synchrotron luminosity during its lifetime is far less than the energy required to maintain the high gas temperature in the core. We also find that it is not possible for the central source to eject the requisite energy in the intracluster gas in terms of the enthalpy of buoyant bubbles of relativistic fluid, without creating discernible large cavities in the existing X-ray XMM-Newton observations., Comment: 15 pages, 12 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

We present new high sensitivity observations of the radio relic in A521 carried out with the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope at 327 MHz and with the Very Large Array at 4.9 and 8.5 GHz. We imaged the relic at these frequencies and carried out a detailed spectral analysis, based on the integrated radio spectrum between 235 MHz and 4.9 GHz, and on the spectral index image in the frequency range 327-610 MHz. To this aim we used the new GMRT observations and other proprietary as well as archival data. We also searched for a possible shock front co-located with the relic on a short archival Chandra X-ray observation of the cluster. The integrated spectrum of the relic is consistent with a single power law; the spectral index image shows a clear trend of steepening going from the outer portion of the relic toward the cluster centre. We discuss the origin of the source in the light of the theoretical models for the formation of cluster radio relics. Our results on the spectral properties of the relic are consistent with acceleration of relativistic electrons by a shock in the intracluster medium. This scenario is further supported by our finding of an X-ray surface brightness edge coincident with the outer border of the radio relic. We present a radio morphological study and spectral analysis for a sample of 13 cD galaxies in rich and poor clusters of galaxies.} Our study is based on new high sensitivity Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (GMRT) observations at 1.28 GHz, 610 MHz and 235 MHz, and on archival data. From a statistical sample of cluster cD galaxies we selected those sources with little information available in the literature and promising for the detection of aged radio emission. Beyond the high sensitivity images for all 13 radio galaxies, we present also a detailed spectral analysis for 7 of them. We found a variety of morphologies and linear sizes, as typical for radio galaxies in the radio power range sampled here (low to intermediate power radio galaxies). The spectral analysis shows that 10/13 radio galaxies have steep radio spectrum, with spectral index $\alpha \ge 1$. In general, the radiative ages and growth velocities are consistent with previous findings that the evolution of radio galaxies at the cluster centres is affected by the dense external medium (i.e. low growth velocities and old ages. We suggest that the dominant galaxies in A 2622 and MKW 03s are dying radio sources, which at present are not fed by nuclear activity. On the other hand, the spectacular source at the centre of A 2372 might be a very interesting example of restarted radio galaxy. We present the low frequency (610 MHz) radio source counts of the VVDS-VLA field and investigate the radio spectral index properties of the sub-mJy population. We use new deep (r.m.s.$\simeq 50$ $\mu$Jy/beam) observations of the VVDS-VLA field obtained at 610 MHz with the GMRT and matched in resolution (6 arcsec) with already available VLA data at 1.4 GHz on the same field. We find evidence of a change of the dominant population of radio sources below 0.5 mJy (at 1.4 GHz): between 0.15 and 0.5 mJy the median spectral index is significantly flatter ($\alpha=-0.46\pm 0.03$) than that of brighter sources ($\alpha=-0.67\pm 0.05$). A relevant contribution below 0.5 mJy from a population of flat spectrum low luminosity compact AGNs and radio quiet QSOs could explain this effect. At even fainter flux density, between 0.10 and 0.15 mJy at 1.4 GHz, the median spectral index steepens again ($\alpha=-0.61\pm 0.04$) suggesting that the contribution of starburst galaxies becomes important below $\sim 0.2$ mJy. Finally we present a sample of 58 candidate ultra-steep sources with radio flux density from one to two orders of magnitude lower than any other sample of such objects., Comment: Accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics

We are currently undertaking a large survey for redshifted atomic and molecular absorption ... only one clear and one tentative detection were obtained: HI absorption at z = 0.097 in PKS 1555-140 and OH absorption at z =0.126 in PKS 2300-189, respectively... In order to determine why no clear molecular absorption was detected in any of the 13 sources searched, we investigate the properties of the five redshifted systems currently known to exhibit OH absorption. In four of these, molecules were first detected via millimetre-wave transitions and the flat radio spectra indicate compact background continuum sources, which may suggest a high degree of coverage of the background source by the molecular clouds in the absorber. Furthermore, for these systems we find a relationship between the molecular line strength and red optical--near infrared (V-K) colours, thus supporting the notion that the reddening of these sources is due to dust, which provides an environment conducive to the formation of molecules. Upon comparison with the V-K colours of our sample, this relationship suggests that, presuming the reddening occurs at the host galaxy redshift at least in some of the targets, many of our observations still fall short of the sensitivityrequired to detect OH absorption, although a confirmation of the ``detection'' of OH in 2300-189 could contravene this., Comment: 13 pages, loads of figures, accepted by MNRAS

Context: Wide-field narrowband surveys are an efficient way of searching large volumes of high-redshift space for distant galaxies. Aims: We describe the Wide Field Imager Lyman-Alpha Search (WFILAS) over 0.74 sq. degree for bright emission-line galaxies at z~5.7. Methods: WFILAS uses deep images taken with the Wide Field Imager (WFI) on the ESO/MPI 2.2m telescope in three narrowband (70 A), one encompassing intermediate band (220 A) and two broadband filters, B and R. We use the novel technique of an encompassing intermediate band filter to exclude false detections. Images taken with broadband B and R filters are used to remove low redshift galaxies from our sample. Results: We present a sample of seven Lya emitting galaxy candidates, two of which are spectroscopically confirmed. Compared to other surveys all our candidates are bright, the results of this survey complements other narrowband surveys at this redshift. Most of our candidates are in the regime of bright luminosities, beyond the reach of less voluminous surveys. Adding our candidates to those of another survey increases the derived luminosity density by ~30%. We also find potential clustering in the Chandra Deep Field South, supporting overdensities discovered by other surveys. Based on a FORS2/VLT spectrum we additionally present the analysis of the second confirmed Lya emitting galaxy in our sample. We find that it is the brightest Lya emitting galaxy (1 x 10^-16 erg s^-1 cm^-2) at this redshift to date and the second confirmed candidate of our survey. We assess the global properties of associated C IV 1548,1550 absorption lines measured in the spectra of radio-loud quasars drawn from a near-complete, low-frequency selected sample. The observations span restframe C IV in two redshift ranges -- 0.7

We present a gravitational lensing analysis of the cluster of galaxies MS 1008-1224 (z=0.30), based on very deep observations obtained using the VLT with FORS and ISAAC during the science verification phase. We reconstructed the projected mass distribution from B,V,R,I bands using two different methods independently. The mass maps are remarkably similar, which confirm that the PSF correction worked well. The ISAAC and FORS data were combined to measure the photometric redshifts and constrain the redshift distribution of the lensed sources. The total mass inferred from weak shear is 2.3 10^{14} h^{-1} Mo on large scales, in agreement with the X-ray mass. The measured mass profile is well fit by both Navarro, Frenk and White and isothermal sphere with core radius models although the NFW is slightly better. In the inner regions, the lensing mass is about 2 times higher than the X-ray mass, which supports the view that complex physical processes in the innermost parts of clusters are responsible for the X-ray/lensing mass discrepancy. The central part of the cluster is composed of two mass peaks whose the center of mass is 15 arcsecond north of the cD galaxy. This provides an explanation for the 15 arcsecond offset between the cD and the center of the X-ray map reported elsewhere. The optical, X-ray and the mass distributions show that MS 1008-1224 is composed of many subsystems which are probably undergoing a merger. MS 1008-1224 shows a remarkable case of cluster-cluster lensing. The photometric redshifts show an excess of galaxies located 30 arcseconds south-west of the cD galaxy at a redshift of about 0.9 which is lensed by MS 1008-1224. These results show the importance of getting BVRIJK images silmultenously.
