1. The Spectral Shape and Photon Fraction as Signatures of the GZK-Cutoff

Abstract: With the prospect of measuring the fraction of arriving secondary photons, produced through photo-pion energy loss interactions of ultra high energy cosmic ray (UHECR) protons with the microwave background during propagation, we investigate how information about the local UHECR source distribution can be inferred from the primary (proton) to secondary (photon) ratio. As an aid to achieve this, we develop an analytic description for both particle populations as a function of propagation time. Through a consideration of the shape of the GZK cut-off and the corresponding photon fraction curve, we investigate the different results expected for both different maximum proton energies injected by the sources, as well as a change in the local source distribution following a perturbative deformation away from a homogeneous description. At the end of the paper, consideration is made as to how these results are modified through extra-galactic magnetic field effects on proton propagation. The paper aims to demonstrate how the shape of the cosmic ray flux in the cut-off region, along with the photon fraction, are useful indicators of the cutoff origin as well as the local UHECR source distribution., Comment: Accepted for publication in PRD, 12 pages, 9 figures

2. The TeV emitter structure in LS 5039

Abstract: LS 5039 is an X-ray binary detected at very high energies. Along the orbit, there is a significant detection even during the superior conjunction of the compact object, when very large gamma-ray opacities are expected. Electromagnetic cascades, which may make the system more transparent to gamma-rays, are hardly efficient for reasonable magnetic fields in the massive star surroundings. A jet-like flow could transport energy to regions where the photon-photon absorption is much lower and the TeV radiation is not so severely absorbed. Otherwise, in the standard pulsar scenario for LS 5039, the emitter would be located between the star and the compact object, which would imply the violation of the observational constraints at X-rays., Comment: 4 pages and 2 figures. 3. Non-thermal radiation from molecular clouds illuminated by cosmic rays from nearby supernova remnants

Abstract: Molecular clouds are expected to emit non-thermal radiation due to cosmic ray interactions in the dense magnetized gas. Such emission is amplified if a cloud is located close to an accelerator of cosmic rays and if cosmic rays can leave the accelerator and diffusively reach the cloud. We consider the situation in which a molecular cloud is located in the proximity of a supernova remnant which is accelerating cosmic rays and gradually releasing them into the interstellar medium. We calculate the multiwavelength spectrum from radio to gamma rays which emerges from the cloud as the result of cosmic ray interactions. The total energy output is dominated by the gamma ray emission, which can exceed the emission from other bands by an order of magnitude or more. 4. Study of Nonthermal Emission from SNR RX J1713.7-3946 with Suzaku

Abstract: We present results obtained from a series of observations of the supernova remnant RX J1713.7-3946 by the Suzaku satellite. The observations cover about two-thirds of the remnant surface. We successfully detected hard X-rays up to ~ 40 keV from each pointing. The hard X-ray spectra are described by power-law functions with photon indices of ~ 3.0, which are larger than those in the energy region below 10 keV. Connection of the spatially-integrated XIS and HXD spectra clearly reveals a spectral cutoff in the 0.4--40 keV X-ray spectrum. This cutoff is interpreted to correspond to the maximum acceleration energy of electrons emitting synchrotron radiation. The wide-band coverage of Suzaku for the first time allows us to derive the parent electron spectrum in the cutoff region, which shows good agreement with theoretical predictions. The inferred cutoff energy in the spatially-integrated X-ray spectrum indicates that particle acceleration in the remnant is so efficient that it is almost at the theoretical limit, the so-called Bohm limit. Based on the Suzaku data, we present results of multi-wavelength studies from spectral and morphological points of view. The spectral energy distribution favors the hadronic scenario rather than the leptonic scenario. For the morphology studies, we compare the surface brightness maps from the Suzaku XIS and the H.E.S.S. telescope. We confirm the strong correlation between X-ray and TeV gamma-ray emission. 5. Fast Variability of Nonthermal X-Ray Emission in Cassiopeia A: Probing Electron Acceleration in Reverse-Shocked Ejecta

Abstract: Recent discovery of the year-scale variability in the synchrotron X-ray emission of the supernova remnant (SNR) RX J1713.7-3946 has initiated our study of multi-epoch X-ray images and spectra of the young SNR Cassiopeia A based on the Chandra archive data taken in 2000, 2002, and 2004. We have found year-scale time variations in the X-ray intensity for a number of X-ray filaments or knots associated with the reverse-shocked regions. The X-ray spectra of the variable filaments are characterized by a featureless continuum, and described by a power law with a photon index within 1.9-2.3. The upper limits on the iron K-line equivalent width are 110 eV, which favors a synchrotron origin of the X-ray emission. The characteristic variability timescale of 4 yr can be explained by the effects of fast synchrotron cooling and diffusive shock acceleration with a plausible magnetic field of 1 mG. 7. On the formation of TeV radiation in LS 5039

Abstract: The recent detections of TeV gamma-rays from compact binary systems show that relativistic outflows (jets or winds) are sites of effective acceleration of particles up to multi-TeV energies. In this paper, we discuss the conditions of acceleration and radiation of ultra-relativistic electrons in LS 5039, the gamma-ray emitting binary system for which the highest quality TeV data are available. Assuming that the gamma-ray emitter is a jet-like structure, we performed detailed numerical calculations of the energy spectrum and lightcurves accounting for the acceleration efficiency, the location of the accelerator, the speed of the emitting flow, the inclination angle of the system, as well as specific features related to anisotropic inverse Compton scattering and pair production. We conclude that the accelerator should not be deep inside the binary system unless we assume a very efficient acceleration rate. We show that within the IC scenario both the gamma-ray spectrum and flux are strongly orbital phase dependent. Formally, our model can reproduce, for specific sets of parameter values, the energy spectrum of gamma-rays reported by HESS for wide orbital phase intervals. 8. Searching for galactic cosmic ray pevatrons with multi-TeV gamma rays and neutrinos

Abstract: The recent HESS detections of supernova remnant shells in TeV gamma-rays confirm the theoretical predictions that supernova remnants can operate as powerful cosmic ray accelerators. If these objects are responsible for the bulk of galactic cosmic rays, then they should accelerate protons and nuclei to 10^15 eV and beyond, i.e. act as cosmic PeVatrons. The model of diffusive shock acceleration allows, under certain conditions, acceleration of particles to such high energies and their gradual injection into the interstellar medium, mainly during the Sedov phase of the remnant evolution. The most energetic particles are released first, while particles of lower energies are more effectively confined in the shell, and are released at later epochs. Thus the spectrum of nonthermal paticles inside the shell extends to PeV energies only during a relatively short period of the evolution of the remnant. For this reason one may expect spectra of secondary gamma-rays and neutrinos extending to energies beyond 10 TeV only from T \lesssim 1000 yr old supernova remnants. On the other hand, if by a chance a massive gas cloud appears in the \lesssim 100 pc vicinity of the supernova remnant, ``delayed'' multi-TeV signals of gamma-rays and neutrinos arise when the most energetic partices emerged from the supernova shell reach the cloud. 9. Galactic Sources of High Energy Neutrinos

Abstract: The undisputed galactic origin of cosmic rays at energies below the so-called knee implies an existence of a nonthemal population of galactic objects which effectively accelerate protons and nuclei to TeV-PeV energies. The distinct signatures of these cosmic accelerators are high energy neutrinos and gamma-rays produced through hadronic interactions. While gamma-rays can be produced also by directly accelerated electrons, high energy neutrinos provide the most straightforward and unambiguous information about the nucleonic component of accelerated particles. The planned km-cube class high energy neutrino detectors are expected to be sensitive enough to provide the first astrophysically meaningful probes of potential VHE neutrino sources. This optimistic prediction is based on the recent discovery of high energy gamma-ray sources with hard energy spectra extending to 10 TeV and beyond. Amongst the best-bet candidates are two young shell-type supernova remnants - RXJ1713.7-4946 and RXJ0852.0-4622, and perhaps also two prominent plerions - the Crab Nebula and Vela X. 10. Gamma ray signatures of ultra high energy cosmic ray accelerators: electromagnetic cascade versus synchrotron radiation of secondary electrons

Abstract: We discuss the possibility of observing ultra high energy cosmic ray sources inhigh energy gamma rays. Protons propagating away from their accelerators produce secondary electrons during interactions with cosmic microwave background photons. These electrons start an electromagnetic cascade that results in a broad band gamma ray emission. We show that in a magnetized Universe ($B \gtrsim 10^{-12}$ G) such emission is likely to be too extended to be detected above the diffusebackground. A more promising possibility comes from the detection of synchrotron photons from the extremely energetic secondary electrons. 11. Gamma rays from molecular clouds

Abstract: It is believed that the observed diffuse gamma ray emission from the galactic plane is the result of interactions between cosmic rays and the interstellar gas. Such emission can be amplified if cosmic rays penetrate into dense molecular clouds. The propagation of cosmic rays inside a molecular cloud has been studied assuming an arbitrary energy and space dependent diffusion coefficient. If the diffusion coefficient inside the cloud is significantly smaller compared to the average one derived for the galactic disk, the observed gamma ray spectrum appears harder than the cosmic ray spectrum, mainly due to the slower penetration of the low energy particles towards the core of the cloud. 12. Potential Neutrino Signals from Galactic Gamma-Ray Sources

Abstract: The recent progress made in Galactic gamma-ray astronomy using the High Energy Stereoskopic System (H.E.S.S.) instrument provides for the first time a population of Galactic TeV gamma-rays, and hence potential neutrino sources, for which the neutrino flux can be estimated. Using the energy spectra and source morphologies measured by H.E.S.S., together with new parameterisations of pion production and decay in hadronic interactions, we estimate the signal and background rates expected for these sources in a first-generation water Cherenkov detector (ANTARES) and a next-generation neutrino telescope in the Mediterranean Sea, KM3NeT, with an instrumented volume of 1 km^3. We find that the brightest gamma-ray sources produce neutrino rates above 1 TeV, comparable to the background from atmospheric neutrinos. The expected event rates of the brightest sources in the ANTARES detector make a detection unlikely. However, for a 1 km^3 KM3NeT detector, event rates of a few neutrinos per year from these sources are expected, and the detection of individual sources seems possible. 13. TeV lightcurve of PSR B1259-63/SS2883

Abstract: The inverse Compton scattering of ultrarelativistic electrons accelerated at the pulsar wind termination shock is believed to be responsible for TeV gamma-ray signal recently reported from the binary system PSR B1259-63/SS2883. While this process can explain the energy spectrum of the observed TeV emission, the detected gamma-ray fluxes do not agree with the published theoretical predictions of the TeV lightcurve. The main objective of this paper is to show that the HESS results can be explained, under certain reasonable assumptions, by inverse Compton scenarios of gamma-ray production in the system. In this paper we study evolution of the energy spectra of relativistic electrons under different assumptions about the acceleration and energy-loss rates of electrons, and the impact of these processes on the lightcurve of IC gamma-rays. We demonstrate that the observed TeV lightcurve can be explained (i) by adiabatic losses which dominate over the entire trajectory of the pulsar with a significant increase towards the periastron, or (ii) by the sub-TeV cutoffs in the energy spectra of electrons due to the enhanced rate of Compton losses close to the periastron. The Compton deceleration of the pulsar wind contributes to the decrease of the nonthermal power released in the accelerated electrons, and thus to the reduction of the IC and synchrotron components of radiation close to the periastron. Although this effect alone cannot explain the observed lightcurves, the Comptonization of the pulsar wind leads to the formation of gamma-radiation with a line-type energy spectrum. 15. The X-ray Jet in Centaurus A: Clues on the Jet Structure and Particle Acceleration

Abstract: We report detailed studies of the X-ray emission from the kpc scale jet in the nearest active galaxy, Cen A. 41 compact sources were found within the jet, 13 of which were newly identified. We construct the luminosity function for the detected jet-knots and argue that the remaining emission is most likely to be truly diffuse, rather than resulting from the pile-up of unresolved faint knots. The transverse jet profile reveals that the extended emission has the intensity peak at the jet boundaries. We note that limb-brightened jet morphologies have been observed previously at radio frequencies in some jet sources, but never so clearly at higher photon energies. Our result therefore supports a stratified jet model, consisting of a relativistic outflow including a boundary layer with a velocity shear. In addition, we found that the X-ray spectrum of the diffuse component is almost uniform across and along the jet. We discuss this spectral behavior within a framework of shock and stochastic particle acceleration processes. We note some evidence for a possible spectral hardening at the outer sheath of the jet. Due to the limited photon statistics of the present data, further deep observations of Cen A are required to determine the reality of this finding, however we note that the existence of the hard X-ray features at outer jet boundaries would provide an important challenge to theories for the evolution of ultra-relativistic particles within the jets., Comment: 27page, 8 figures, ver2, accepted for publication in the ApJ

16. Microquasar LS 5039: a TeV gamma-ray emitter and a potential TeV neutrino source

Abstract: The recent detection of TeV gamma-rays from the microquasar LS 5039 by HESS is one of the most exciting discoveries of observational gamma-ray astronomy in the very high energy regime. This result clearly demonstrates that X-ray binaries with relativistic jets (microquasars) are sites of effective acceleration of particles (electrons and/or protons) to multi-TeV energies. Whether the gamma-rays are of hadronic or leptonic origin is a key issue related to the origin of Galactic Cosmic Rays. We discuss different possible scenarios for the production of gamma-rays, and argue in favor of hadronic origin of TeV photons, especially if they are produced within the binary system. If so, the detected gamma-rays should be accompanied by a flux of high energy neutrinos emerging from the decays of \pi^\pm mesons produced at pp and/or p \gamma interactions. The flux of TeV neutrinos, which can be estimated on the basis of the detected TeV gamma-ray flux, taking into account the internal \gamma \gamma \to e^+e^- absorption, depends significantly on the location of gamma-ray production region(s). The minimum neutrino flux above 1 TeV is expected to be at the level of 10^{-12} cm^{-2} s^{-1}; however, it could be up to a factor of 100 larger. 17. Hard X-ray and Gamma-ray Emission Induced by Ultra-High Energy Protons in Cluster Accretion Shocks and their Detectability

18. Hard X-ray and Gamma-ray Emission Induced by Ultra-High Energy Protons in Cluster Accretion Shocks

Abstract: All sufficiently massive clusters of galaxies are expected to be surrounded by strong accretion shocks, where protons can be accelerated to $\sim 10^{18}$-$10^{19}$ eV under plausible conditions. Such protons interact with the cosmic microwave background and efficiently produce very high energy electron-positron pairs, which then radiate synchrotron and inverse Compton emission, peaking respectively at hard X-ray and TeV gamma-ray energies. Characterized by hard spectra (photon indices $\sim 1.5$) and spatial distribution tracing the accretion shock, these can dominate over other nonthermal components depending on the shock magnetic field. HESS and other Cerenkov telescopes may detect the TeV emission from nearby clusters, notwithstanding its extended nature. The hard X-rays may be observable by future imaging facilities such as NeXT, and possibly also by ASTRO-E2/HXD. 19. Klein-Nishina Effects in the Spectra of Non-Thermal Sources Immersed in External Radiation Fields

Abstract: We study Klein-Nishina (KN) effects in the spectrum produced by a steady state, non-thermal source where rapidly accelerated electrons cool by emitting synchrotron radiation and Compton upscattering ambient photons produced outside the source. We focus on the case where the radiation density inside the source exceeds that of the magnetic field. We show that the KN reduction in the electron Compton cooling rate causes the steady-state electron spectrum to harden at energies above \gamma_{KN}, where \gamma_{KN}= 1/4\epsilon_0 and \epsilon_0=h\nu_0/m_ec^2 is the characteristic ambient photon energy. The source synchrotron spectrum thus shows a high-energy ``bump'' or excess even though the electron acceleration spectrum has no such excess. In contrast, the low-energy Compton gamma-ray spectrum shows little distortion because the electron hardening compensates for the KN decline in the scattering rate. For sufficiently high electron energies, however, Compton cooling becomes so inefficient that synchrotron cooling dominates -- an effect omitted in most previous studies. The hardening of the electron distribution thus stops, leading to a rapid decline in Compton gamma-ray emission, i.e., a strong spectral break whose location does not depend on the maximum electron energy. This break can limit the importance of Compton gamma-ray pair production on ambient photons and implies that a source's synchrotron luminosity may exceed its Compton luminosity even though the source magnetic field energy density is smaller than the ambient radiation energy density. 20. High energy gamma rays from the massive black hole in the Galactic Center

Abstract: Accreting black holes are believed to be sites of possible particle acceleration with favorable conditions also for effective gamma-ray production. However, because of photon-photon pair production, only low energy (MeV) gamma-rays can escape these compact objects with typically very large compactness parameter, given that in most cases the accretion disks within 10 Schwarzschild radii radiate with a power exceeding 10 percent of the Eddington luminosity. Therefore, the high-energy gamma-ray emission of these objects (both stellar mass and supermassive BHs) is generally suppressed, and consequently the unique information on possible particle acceleration process near the event horizon of the BH is essentially lost. Fortunately, this is not the case for the super-massive BH located at the dynamical center of our Galaxy (Sgr A*) which, thanks to its extraordinary low bolometric luminosity is transparent fo gamma-rays up to very high energies, about 10 TeV. We discuss different scenarios of gamma-ray production in Sgr A* and show that for a reasonable set of parameters one can expect detectable gamma-ray fluxes of both hadronic and electronic origin. Some of these scenarios are applicable not only for the TeV gamma-ray emission recently reported from the direction of Galactic Center, but may have broader implications relevant to highly variable nonthermal emission of Sgr A* in radio, IR and X-ray bands., Comment: submitted to Astrophysical Journal

21. Spectral properties of nonthermal X-ray emission from the shell-type SNR RX J1713.7-3946 as revealed by XMM-Newton

Abstract: We present the results of our morphological and spectral study of properties of the supernova remnant RX J1713.7-3946 based on data obtained with XMM-Newton. Highly inhomogeneous structures, such as the bright spots, filaments and dark voids, noted by Uchiyama et al. (2003), appear in the entire bright western portion of the shell. In addition two narrow rims are found which run parallel to each other from north to south in the western part of the remnant. No complex structures are seen in the interior region of the remnant. The X-ray spectra everywhere can be well represented with a power-law function of photon index ranging within Gamma = 2.0-2.8. A clear difference of spectra between the central dim region and the bright western portion is seen at lower energies. This differences can be ascribed either to an additional thermal component with electron temperature, kTe= 0.56keV from the center or, alternatively, to an increase in column density of Delta NH ~ 0.3 x 10^22 cm^-2 in the western region. In the context of the recent discovery by the NANTEN telescope of a molecular cloud apparently interacting with the western part of the supernova remnant, the second possibility seems to be the more likely scenario., Comment: 10 pages, 9 figures. 22. Neutrinos from Accreting Neutron Stars

Abstract: The magnetospheres of accreting neutron stars develop electrostatic gaps with huge potential drops. Protons and ions, accelerated in these gaps along the dipolar magnetic field lines to energies greater than 100 TeV, can impact onto a surrounding accretion disc. A proton-induced cascade so develops, and $\nu$-emission is produced from charged pion decays. Using GEANT4, a computer code that tracks particles produced in high energy collisions, we have calculated the resulting $\nu$-spectrum with extensive disc shower simulations. We show that the $\nu$-spectrum produced out of the proton beam is a power law. We use this result to propose accretion-powered X-ray binaries (with highly magnetized neutron stars) as a new population of point-like $\nu$-sources for km-scale detectors, such as ICECUBE. As a particular example we discuss the case of A0535+26. We show that ICECUBE should find A0535+26 to be a periodic $\nu$-source: one for which the formation and loss of its accretion disc can be fully detected. Finally, we briefly comment on the possibility that smaller telescopes, like AMANDA, could also detect A0535+26 by folding observations with the orbital period., Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures. 23. Time Dependent Modeling of the Markarian 501 X-ray and TeV Gamma-Ray Data Taken During March and April, 1997

Abstract: If the high-energy emission from TeV blazars is produced by the Synchrotron Self-Compton (SSC) mechanism, then simultaneous X-ray and Gamma-ray observations of these objects are a powerful probe of the electron (and/or positron) populations responsible for this emission. Understanding the emitting particle distributions and their evolution in turn allow us to probe physical conditions in the inner blazar jet and test, for example, various acceleration scenarios. By constraining the SSC emission model parameters, such observations also allow us to predict the intrinsic (unabsorbed) Gamma-ray spectra of these sources, a major uncertainty in current attempts to use the observed Gamma-ray spectra to constrain the intensity of the extragalactic background at optical/infrared wavelengths. As a next step in testing the SSC model and as a demonstration of the potential power of coordinated X-ray and Gamma-ray observations, we attempt to model in detail the X-ray and Gamma-ray light curves of the TeV Blazar Mrk 501 during its April-May 1997 outburst using a time dependent SSC emission model. Extensive, quasi-simultaneous X-ray and gamma-ray coverage exists for this period. We discuss and explore quantitatively several of the flare scenarios presented in the literature. We show that simple two-component models (with a soft, steady X-ray component plus a variable SSC component) involving substantial pre-acceleration of electrons to Lorentz factors on the order of 1E+5 describe the data train surprisingly well. 24. ASCA View of the Supernova Remnant Gamma Cygni (G78.2+2.1): Bremsstrahlung X-ray Spectrum from Loss-flattened Electron Distribution

Abstract: We perform X-ray studies of the shell-type supernova remnant (SNR) gamma-Cygni associated with the brightest EGRET unidentified source 3EG J2020+4017. In addition to the thermal emissions with characteristic temperature of kT = 0.5-0.9 keV, we found an extremely hard X-ray component from several clumps localized in the northern part of the remnant. This component is described by a power-law with a photon index of 0.8-1.5. Both the absolute flux and the spectral shape of the nonthermal X-rays cannot be explained by the synchrotron or inverse-Compton mechanisms. We argue that the unusually hard X-ray spectrum can be naturally interpreted in terms of nonthermal bremsstrahlung from Coulomb-loss-flattened electron distribution in dense environs with the gas density about 10 to 100 cm^-3 . For given spectrum of the electron population, the ratio of the bremsstrahlung X- and gamma-ray fluxes depends on the position of the ``Coulomb break'' in the electron spectrum. The bulk of gamma-rays detected by EGRET would come from the radio-bright and X-ray dim cloud at southeast, where very dense gas and strong magnetic field would illuminate the cloud in the radio and gamma-ray bands, but suppress the bremsstrahlung X-ray emission due to the shift of the ``Coulomb break'' in the electron spectrum towards higher energies., Comment: 14 pages, 8 figures, emulateapj5, accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal

25. Simultaneous X-Ray and Gamma-Ray Observations of TeV Blazars: Testing Synchro-Compton Emission Models and Probing the Infrared Extragalactic Background

Abstract: The last years have seen a revolution in ground-based gamma-ray detectors. We can now detect the spectra of nearby TeV blazars like Mrk 421 and 501 out to approximately 20 TeV, and during the strongest flares, we can now follow fluctuations in these spectra on timescales close to the shortest ones likely in these objects. We point out that this represents a unique opportunity. Using these and future detectors in combination with broadband X-ray satellites like SAX and RXTE, we will be able to simultaneously follow all significant X-ray/gamma-ray variations in a blazar's emission. This will provide the most stringent test yet of the synchrotron-Compton emission model for these objects. In preparation for the data to come, we present sample SSC model calculations using a fully self-consistent, accurate code to illustrate the variability behavior one might see (the range of behavior is wider than many expect) and to show how good timing information can probe physical conditions in the source. If the model works, i.e., if X-ray/TeV variations are consistent with being produced by a common electron distribution, then we show it is possible to robustly estimate the blazar's intrinsic TeV spectrum from its X-ray spectrum. Knowing this spectrum, we can then determine the level of absorption in the observed spectrum. Constraining this absorption, due to gamma-ray pair production on diffuse radiation, provides an important constraint on the infrared extragalactic background intensity. Without the intrinsic spectrum, we show that detecting absorption is very difficult and argue that Mrk 421 and 501, as close as they are, may already be absorbed by a factor 2 at approximately 3 TeV. Abstract: The present paper investigates the temperature structure of the X-ray emitting plasma in the core of the Perseus cluster using the 1.8-20.0 keV data obtained with the Soft X-ray Spectrometer (SXS) onboard the Hitomi Observatory. A series of four observations were carried out, with a total effective exposure time of 338 ks and covering a central region _ 7′ in diameter. The SXS was operated with an energy resolution of _5 eV (full width at half maximum) at 5.9 keV. Not only fine structures of K-shell lines in He-like ions but also transitions from higher principal quantum numbers are clearly resolved from Si through Fe. This enables us to perform temperature diagnostics using the line ratios of Si, S, Ar, Ca, and Fe, and to provide the first direct measurement of the excitation temperature and ionization temperature in the Perseus cluster. The observed spectrum is roughly reproduced by a single temperature thermal plasma model in collisional ionization equilibrium, but detailed line ratio diagnostics reveal slight deviations from this approximation. In particular, the data exhibit an apparent trend of increasing ionization temperature with increasing atomic mass, as well as small differences between the ionization and excitation temperatures for Fe, the only element for which both temperatures can be measured. The best-fit two-temperature models suggest a combination of 3 and 5 keV gas, which is consistent with the idea that the observed small deviations from a single temperature approximation are due to the effects of projection of the known radial temperature gradient in the cluster core along the line of sight. Comparison with the Chandra/ACIS and the XMM-Newton/RGS results on the other hand suggests that additional lower-temperature components

Abstract: The Hitomi (ASTRO-H) mission is the sixth Japanese X-ray astronomy satellite developed by a large international collaboration, including Japan, USA, Canada, and Europe. The mission aimed to provide the highest energy resolution ever achieved at E greater than 2 keV, using a microcalorimeter instrument, and to cover a wide energy range spanning four decades in energy from soft X-rays to gamma-rays. After a successful launch on 2016 February 17, the spacecraft lost its function on 2016 March 26, but the commissioning phase for about a month provided valuable information on the on-board instruments and the spacecraft system, including astrophysical results obtained from first light observations. The paper describes the Hitomi (ASTRO-H) mission, its capabilities, the initial operation, and the instruments/spacecraft performances confirmed during the commissioning operations for about a month.

Abstract: 37th International Cosmic Ray Conference, ICRC 2021, Berlin, Germany - Online, 12 Jul 2021 - 23 Jul 2021; Proceedings of Science / International School for Advanced Studies (ICRC2021), 779 (2021). doi:10.22323/1.395.0779, Detecting and studying galactic gamma-ray sources emitting very-high energy photons sheds light on the acceleration and propagation of cosmic rays presumably created in these sources. Currently, there are few sources emitting photons with energies exceeding 100 TeV. In this work we revisit the unidentified source MGRO J1908+06, initially detected by Milagro, using an updated H.E.S.S. dataset and analysis pipeline. The vicinity of the source contains a supernova remnant and pulsars as well as molecular clouds. This makes the identification of the primary source(s) of galactic cosmic rays as well as the nature of the gamma-ray emission challenging, especially in light of the recent HAWC and LHAASO detection of the high energy tail of its spectrum. Abstract: 37th International Cosmic Ray Conference, ICRC2021, Berlin, Germany - Online, 12 Jul 2021 - 23 Jul 2021; Proceedings of Science / International School for Advanced Studies (ICRC2021), 777 (2021). doi:10.22323/1.395.0777, Fast radio bursts (FRB) are enigmatic powerful single radio pulses with durations of several milliseconds and high brightness temperatures suggesting coherent emission mechanism. For the time being a number of extragalactic FRBs have been detected in the high-frequency radio band including repeating ones. The most plausible explanation for these phenomena is magnetar hyperflares. The first observational evidence of this scenario was obtained in April 2020 when an FRB was detected from the direction of the Galactic magnetar and soft gamma repeater SGR1935+2154. The FRB was preceded with a number of soft gamma-ray bursts observed by Swift-BAT satellite, which triggered the follow-up program of the H.E.S.S. imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes (IACTs). H.E.S.S. has observed SGR1935+2154 over a 2 hour window few hours prior to the FRB detection by STARE2 and CHIME. The observations overlapped with other X-ray bursts from the magnetar detected by INTEGRAL and Swift-BAT, thus providing first observations of a magnetar in a flaring state in the very-high energy domain. Abstract: High-resolution X-ray spectroscopy with Hitomi was expected to resolve the origin of the faint unidentified E=3.5 keV emission line reported in several low-resolution studies of various massive systems, such as galaxies and clusters, including the Perseus cluster. We have analyzed the Hitomi first-light observation of the Perseus cluster. The emission line expected for Perseus based on the XMM-Newton signal from the large cluster sample under the dark matter decay scenario is too faint to be detectable in the Hitomi data. However, the previously reported 3.5 keV flux from Perseus was anomalously high compared to the sample-based prediction. We find no unidentified line at the reported high flux level. Taking into account the XMM measurement uncertainties for this region, the inconsistency with Hitomi is at a 99% significance for a broad dark-matter line and at 99.7% for a narrow line from the gas. We do not find anomalously high fluxes of the nearby faint K line or the Ar satellite line that were proposed as explanations for the earlier 3.5 keV detections. We do find a hint of a broad excess near the energies of high-n transitions of Sxvi (E=3.44 keV rest-frame) -- a possible signature of charge exchange in the molecular nebula and another proposed explanation for the unidentified line. While its energy is consistent with XMM pn detections, it is unlikely to explain the MOS signal. Abstract: Recent discovery of the year-scale variability in the synchrotron X-ray emission of the supernova remnant (SNR) RX J1713.7-3946 has initiated our study of multi-epoch X-ray images and spectra of the young SNR Cassiopeia A based on the Chandra archive data taken in 2000, 2002, and 2004. We have found year-scale time variations in the X-ray intensity for a number of X-ray filaments or knots associated with the reverse-shocked regions. The X-ray spectra of the variable filaments are characterized by a featureless continuum, and described by a power law with a photon index within 1.9-2.3. The upper limits on the iron K-line equivalent width are 110 eV, which favors a synchrotron origin of the X-ray emission. The characteristic variability timescale of 4 yr can be explained by the effects of fast synchrotron cooling and diffusive shock acceleration with a plausible magnetic field of 1 mG. Abstract: The active galactic nucleus PKS 0301−243 (z = 0.266) is a high-synchrotron-peaked BL Lac object that is detected at high energies (HE, 100 MeV 100 GeV) by the High Energy Stereoscopic System (H.E.S.S.) from observations between September 2009 and December 2011 for a total live time of 34.9 h. Gamma rays above 200 GeV are detected at a significance of 9.4σ. A hint of variability at the 2.5σ level is found. An integral flux I(E > 200 GeV) = (3.3 ± 1.1stat ± 0.7syst) × 10-12 ph cm-2 s-1 and a photon index Γ = 4.6 ± 0.7stat ± 0.2syst are measured. Multi-wavelength light curves in HE, X-ray and optical bands show strong variability, and a minimal variability timescale of eight days is estimated from the optical light curve. A single-zone leptonic synchrotron self-Compton scenario satisfactorily reproduces the multi-wavelength data. In this model, the emitting region is out of equipartition and the jet is particle dominated. Because of its high redshift compared to other sources observed at TeV energies, the very high energy emission from PKS 0301−243 is attenuated by the extragalactic background light (EBL) and the measured spectrum is used to derive an upper limit on the opacity of the EBL. Abstract: Strong iron fluorescence at 6.4 keV and hard-X-ray emissions from giant molecular clouds in the Galactic center region have been interpreted as reflections of a past outburst of the Sgr A* supermassive black hole. Careful treatment of multiple interactions of photons in a complicated geometry is essential to modeling the reprocessed emissions from the dense clouds. We develop a new calculation framework of X-ray reflection from molecular clouds based on Monte Carlo simulations for accurate interpretation of high-quality observational data. By utilizing this simulation framework, we present the first calculations of morphologies and spectra of the reflected X-ray emission for several realistic models of Sgr B2, which is the most massive molecular cloud in our Galaxy. The morphology of scattered hard X-rays above 20 keV is significantly different from that of iron fluorescence due to their large penetrating power into dense regions of the cloud, probing the structure of the cloud. High-resolution spectra provide quantitative evaluation of the iron line including its Compton shoulder to constrain the mass and the chemical composition of the cloud as well as the luminosity of the illuminating source. Abstract: We argue that the bright flare of the binary pulsar \object{PSR B1259$-$63/LS2883} detected by the {\it Fermi} Large Area Telescope (LAT), is due to the inverse Compton (IC) scattering of the unshocked electron-positron pulsar wind with a Lorentz factor $\Gamma_0 \approx 10^4$. The combination of two effects both linked to the circumstellar disk (CD), is a key element in the proposed model. The first effect is related to the impact of the surrounding medium on the termination of the pulsar wind. Inside the disk, the "early" termination of the wind results in suppression of its gamma-ray luminosity. When the pulsar escapes the disk, the conditions for termination of the wind undergo significant changes. This would lead to a dramatic increase of the pulsar wind zone, and thus to the proportional increase of the gamma-ray flux. On the other hand, if the parts of the CD disturbed by the pulsar can supply infrared photons of density high enough for efficient Comptonization of the wind, almost the entire kinetic energy of the pulsar wind would be converted to radiation, thus the gamma-ray luminosity of the wind could approach to the level of the pulsar's spin-down luminosity as reported by the {\it Fermi} collaboration., Comment: 14 pages, 4 figures

Abstract: Only a few binary systems with compact objects display TeV emission. The physical properties of the companion stars represent basic input to understand the physical mechanisms behind the particle acceleration, emission, and absorption processes in these so-called gamma-ray binaries. Here we present high-resolution and high signal-to-noise optical spectra of LS2883, the Be star forming a gamma-ray binary with the young non-accreting pulsar PSR B1259-63, showing it to rotate faster and be significantly earlier and more luminous than previously thought. Analysis of the interstellar lines suggest that the system is located at the same distance as (and thus is likely a member of) CenOB1. Taking the distance to the association, d=2.3kpc, and a color excess of E(B-V)=0.85 for LS2883, results in Mv=-4.4. Because of fast rotation, LS2883 is oblate (R_eq=9.7R_sun and R_pole=8.1R_sun) and presents a temperature gradient (T_eq=27500K, log g_eq=3.7; T_pole=34000K, log g_pole=4.1). If the star did not rotate, it would have parameters corresponding to a late O-type star. We estimate its luminosity at log(L*/L_sun)=4.79, and its mass at M=30M_sun. The mass function then implies an inclination of the binary system i_orb=23deg,slightly smaller than previous estimates. We discuss the implications of these new astrophysical parameters of LS2883 for the production of high energy and very high energy gamma rays in the PSR B1259-63/LS2883 gamma-ray binary system. In particular, the stellar properties are very important for prediction of the line-like bulk Comptonization component from the unshocked ultra-relativistic pulsar wind., Accepted for publication in ApJL

Abstract: We report on the discovery of a hard X-ray source with ASCA from a molecular cloud in the vicinity of the SNR RX J1713.7-3946. The energy spectrum (1--10 keV) shows a flat continuum which is described by a power-law with photon index 1.0 +-0.4. We argue that this unusually flat spectrum can be best interpreted in terms of characteristic bremsstrahlung emission from the ionization-loss-flattened distribution of either sub-relativistic protons or mildly-relativistic electrons. The strong shock of the SNR RX J1713.7-3946, which presumably interacts with the molecular cloud, as evidenced by observations of CO-lines, seems to be a natural site of acceleration of such sub- or mildly-relativistic nonthermal particles. However, the observed X-ray luminosity of 1.7 10^35 erg/s (for 6 kpc distance) requires that a huge kinetic energy of about 10^50 erg be released in the form of nonthermal particles to illuminate the cloud. The shock-acceleration at RX J1713.7-3946 can barely satisfy this energetic requirement, unless (i) the source is located much closer than 6 kpc and/or (ii) the mechanical energy of the explosion essentially exceeds 10^51 erg. Another possibility would be that an essential part of the "lost" energy is somehow converted to plasma waves, which return this energy to nonthermal particles through their turbulent reacceleration on plasma waves. 41. Gamma ray signatures of ultra high energy cosmic ray accelerators: electromagnetic cascade versus synchrotron radiation of secondary electrons.

Abstract: We discuss the possibility of observing ultra high energy cosmic ray sources in high energy gamma rays. Protons propagating away from their accelerators produce secondary electrons during interactions with cosmic microwave background photons. These electrons start an electromagnetic cascade that results in a broad band gamma ray emission. We show that in a magnetized Universe (B≳10−12 G) such emission is likely to be too extended to be detected above the diffuse background. A more promising possibility comes from the detection of synchrotron photons from the extremely energetic secondary electrons. Although this emission is produced in a rather extended region of size ∼10 Mpc, it is expected to be point-like and detectable at GeV energies if the intergalactic magnetic field is at the nanogauss level. Abstract: It is believed that the observed diffuse gamma-ray emission from the galactic plane is the result of interactions between cosmic rays and the interstellar gas. Such emission can be amplified if cosmic rays penetrate into dense molecular clouds. The propagation of cosmic rays inside a molecular cloud has been studied assuming an arbitrary energy and space dependent diffusion coefficient. If the diffusion coefficient inside the cloud is significantly smaller compared to the average one derived for the galactic disk, the observed gamma-ray spectrum appears harder than the cosmic ray spectrum, mainly due to the slower penetration of the low energy particles towards the core of the cloud. Abstract: The inverse Compton (IC) scattering of ultrarelativistic electrons accelerated at the pulsar wind termination shock is generally believed to be responsible for TeV gamma-ray signal recently reported from the binary system PSR B1259-63/SS2883. In such a system the acceleration takes place in the presence of a dense radiation field provided by a companion Be2-type star. Thus it is natural to expect an orbital phase dependence of the acceleration efficiency in the system. The HESS collaboration reported the tendency of reduction of TeV γ-rays around the periastron. In this paper we study a possible explanation of this effect by the "early" (sub-TeV) cutoffs in the energy spectrum of accelerated electrons due to the enhanced rate of Compton losses close to the periastron. Abstract: The recent detection of TeV gamma-radiation from the direction of the Galactic Center within several arc-minutes around Sgr A* is the first model-independent evidence of existence of high-energy particle accelerator(s) in the central 10 pc region of our Galaxy. This is an extraordinary site that harbours many remarkable objects with the compact radio source Sgr A* — a hypothetical super-massive black hole (SMBH) — in the dynamical center of the Galaxy. Here we explore the possible direct and indirect links of the reported TeV emission to the SMBH. We show that at least three γ-ray production scenarios that take place close to the event horizon of theSMBHcan explain the reported TeV fluxes. An alternative (or additional) channel of TeV radiation is related to the run-away protons accelerated in Sgr A*. Quasi-continuous injection of relativistic protons into the surrounding dense gas environment initiates detectable high-energy gamma-ray emission. The absolute flux and the energy spectrum of this radiation component strongly depend on the history of particle injection and the character of diffusion of protons during the last 105 yr. 46. Limitations on the photo-disintegration process as a source of VHE photons

Abstract: Abstract: We consider whether photo-disintegration is ever able to provide an effective mechanism for the production of VHE γ-ray emission from astrophysical sources. We find that the efficiency of this process is always smaller by a factor A/Z 2 (∼4/A) than that of nuclei cooling through Bethe–Heitler pair-production. Furthermore, for sources optically thin to TeV emission, we find that the efficiency of this process can be no more than 3×10−5(R source/R Larmor), where R source is the source size and R Larmor is the CR nuclei Larmor radius. 48. Transient phenomena in the high energy sky

Abstract: In this thesis I explore some of the brightest transient phenomena we observe in the highnenergy sky. I consider some of the observational difficulties we encounter in studying these highly variable sources, in particular the importance of the level of photon statistics, especially in the difficult region that sits between 10 and 100 GeV, where we have the overlap between the energy domain of space telescopes and the energy range more suited to ground-based Cherenkov telescopes. The specific sources I study here belong to various classes of gamma-ray emitters: Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN), compact binaries, and powerful flare events in the Sun's magnetosphere. The first chapter provides an introduction to the field of high energy gamma-ray astronomy. There, I cover the basic gamma-ray emission mechanisms and give an overview of the sources that I have investigated as well as a description of the telescopes and instruments involved in my gamma-ray observations of these sources. The second and third chapters discuss the work I have done together with colleagues in the H.E.S.S. Collaboration to enable the delivery of the first results from phase II of H.E.S.S. for two bright AGNs and the gamma-ray binary PSR B1259-63. The fourth chapter covers my work on analysing the gamma-ray emission from solar flares in order to put constraints on hadronic models of the are emission. The fifth chapter discusses the evidence for multiple components in the high energy spectrum of the blazar AGN called Mrk 501. The sixth chapter highlights the importance of the study of the cut-off region in bright gamma-ray sources detected by the Fermi- LAT, investigating also the possible improvements that will be brought about by the next generation of ground-based gamma-ray telescopes. Finally, the conclusions summarise my findings and explore future perspectives in the field.

Abstract: We report the correlation between the X-ray and γ-ray emission found in our analysis of the Fermi/LAT and Swift/BAT data from 8 years of observations of the nearby Seyfert 2 galaxy NGC 4945. Using the BAT light-curves we determined summed periods of low and high X-ray flux and we found that the average γ-ray spectrum is harder in the latter (higher X-ray flux level), with the difference of the γ-ray spectral index of ~0.4. The correlation indicates that the γ-rays are produced in the active nucleus of this Seyfert galaxy rather than by cosmic rays interacting with the interstellar medium (as assumed in the alternative starburst model). We compare NGC 4945 with two other γ-ray loud galaxies showing both starburst and AGN activities, NGC 1068 and Circinus. 50. High energy radiation from jets and accretion disks near rotating black holes

Abstract: We model the low/hard state in X-ray binaries as a magnetically arrested accretion flow, and calculate the resulting radiation using a general-relativistic radiative transport code. Firstly, we investigate the origin of the high-energy emission. We find the following indications of a significant jet contribution at high energies: (i) a pronounced γ-ray peak at ∼ 1023 Hz, (ii) a break in the optical/UV band where the spectrum changes from disk to jet dominated, and (iii) a low-frequency synchrotron peak ≲ 1014 Hz implies that a significant fraction of any observed X-ray and γ-ray emission originates in the jet. Secondly, we investigate the effects of black hole spin on the high-energy emission. We find that the X-ray and γ-ray power depend strongly on spin and inclination angle. Surprisingly, this dependence is not a result of the Blandford-Znajek mechanism, but instead can be understood as a redshift effect. For rapidly rotating black holes, observers with large inclinations see deeper into the hot, dense, highly-magnetized inner regions of the accretion flow. Since the lower frequency emission originates at larger radii, it is not significantly affected by the spin. Therefore, the ratio of the X-ray to near-infrared power is an observational probe of black hole spin.
