As the closest $L^{\ast}$ galaxy to our own Milky Way, the Andromeda galaxy (M31) is an ideal laboratory for studies of galaxy evolution. The AMIGA project has recently provided observations of the cool ($T\sim10^4$ K) phase of the circumgalactic medium (CGM) of M31, using HST/COS absorption spectra along $\sim40$ background QSO sightlines, located up to and beyond the galaxy virial radius. Based on these data, and by the means of semi-analytic models and Bayesian inference, we provide here a physical description of the origin and dynamics of the cool CGM of M31. We investigate two competing scenarios, in which (i) the cool gas is mostly produced by supernova(SN)-driven galactic outflows or (ii) it mostly originates from infall of gas from the intergalactic medium. In both cases, we take into account the effect of gravity and hydrodynamical interactions with a hot corona, which has a cosmologically motivated angular momentum. We compare the outputs of our models to the observed covering factor, silicon column density and velocity distribution of the AMIGA absorbers. We find that, to explain the observations, the outflow scenario requires an unphysically large (> 100\%) efficiency for SN feedback. Our infall models, on the other hand, can consistently account for the AMIGA observations and the predicted accretion rate, angular momentum and metallicity are consistent with a cosmological infall from the intergalactic medium., Accepted for publication in MNRAS

Chromospherically active binaries’ (CABs) are late-type evolved stars with strong chromosphere/coronae and high flare activity levels. Starspot evolution in these CABs and binaries reveals strong stellar and chromospheric activities. In binaries, the tidal interaction via the internal dynamo motion, during rapid rotation of the component stars generates magnetic fields. The magnetic activity heats the tenuous coronal plasma, and the reconnection of energetic particles leads to stellar flare formation. Cyclic-variation signatures in brightness and emission lines are indicators of coronal/chromospheric activities. The spatial population densities of CABs are large, and their hard energy spectral characteristics are prominent in our galaxy. Photo-ionization/collisional excitation processes in the coronae of CABs generate a strong thermal emission line at 6.7 keV. In the present work, we re-analyzed stellar flare data of two CABs (Algol & GT Muscae) observed with Suzaku. We resolved the 6.7 keV emission spectrum and equivalent width (EW) in each source’s stellar flare data. The resolved energy spectra are remarkably similar to that of the hard energy spectra at 6.7 keV of X-ray point sources observed in different Galactic regions. The EW of the 6.7 keV emission line obtained in this work compares favorably with the EW range (260 eV – 980 eV) of the 6.7 keV energy spectra of Galactic point sources. Hence, cumulative X-ray emission lines of coronal plasma (and their EWs) emitted by numerous point sources in different Galactic plane positions give clues on the Galactic Ridge X-ray Emission (GRXE) mechanism. We are of the view that CABs could account for a large number of fast-transient X-ray sources that emit thermal emission line at 6.7 keV during their quiescent and flared phases, and these underlying population sources could contribute significantly to the total luminosity of 6.7 keV GRXE.

We present a machine learning model to classify active galactic nuclei (AGNs) and galaxies (AGN-galaxy classifier) and a model to identify type 1 (optically unabsorbed) and type 2 (optically absorbed) AGN (type 1/2 classifier). We test tree-based algorithms, using training samples built from the X-ray Multi-Mirror Mission–Newton (XMM–Newton) catalogue and the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS), with labels derived from the SDSS survey. The performance was tested making use of simulations and of cross-validation techniques. With a set of features including spectroscopic redshifts and X-ray parameters connected to source properties (e.g. fluxes and extension), as well as features related to X-ray instrumental conditions, the precision and recall for AGN identification are 94 and 93 per cent, while the type 1/2 classifier has a precision of 74 per cent and a recall of 80 per cent for type 2 AGNs. The performance obtained with photometric redshifts is very similar to that achieved with spectroscopic redshifts in both test cases, while there is a decrease in performance when excluding redshifts. Our machine learning model trained on X-ray features can accurately identify AGN in extragalactic surveys. We develop a high-performance analytical model of Galactic Chemical Evolution, which accounts for delay time distributions and lock-up of stellar yields in a thermal-phased ISM. The model is capable of searching, for the first time, through the high-dimensional parameter space associated with the r-process enrichment of the Milky Way by its possible sources: Neutron Star Mergers and Collapsar events. Their differing formation mechanisms give these two processes different time dependencies, a property which has frequently been used to argue in favour of collapsars as the dominant r-process source. However, we show that even with large degrees of freedom in the allowed thermal, structural, and chemical properties of the galaxy, large regions of parameter space are in strong tension with the data. In particular, whilst we are able to find models in which neutron star mergers produce the majority of r-process material, the data rule out all models with dominant collapsar yields. With no other identified source, we conclude that Neutron Star Mergers must be the dominant contributors to the modern Milky Way r-process budget., Comment: 20 pages (3 pages appendices), 16 figures

Dual-Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) are a natural consequence of the hierarchical structure formation scenario, and can provide an important test of various models for black hole growth. However, due to their rarity and difficulty to find at high redshift, very few confirmed dual-AGN are known at the epoch where galaxy formation peaks. Here we report the discovery of a gravitationally lensed dual-AGN system at redshift 2.37 comprising two optical/IR quasars separated by 6.5+/-0.6 kpc, and a third compact (R_eff = 0.45+/-0.02 kpc) red galaxy that is offset from one of the quasars by 1.7+/-0.1 kpc. From Very Large Array imaging at 3 GHz, we detect 600 and 340 pc-scale radio emission that is associated with both quasars. The 1.4 GHz luminosity densities of the radio sources are about 10^24.35 W / Hz, which is consistent with weak jets. However, the low brightness temperature of the emission is also consistent with star-formation at the level of 850 to 1150 M_sun / yr. Although this supports the scenario where the AGN and/or star-formation is being triggered through an ongoing triple-merger, a post-merger scenario where two black holes are recoiling is also possible, given that neither has a detected host galaxy., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS Letters

Relativistic jets can interact with the ambient gas distribution of the host galaxy, before breaking out to larger scales. In the past decade several studies have simulated jet-driven outflows to understand how they affect the nearby environment, and over what spatial and temporal scales such interactions occur. The simulations are able to capture the interaction of the jets with the turbulent clumpy interstellar medium and the resultant energetics of the gas. The physical properties of the accretion flow and of the X-ray emitting plasma, in supermassive black holes accreting at extreme Eddington rates, are still very unclear. Here we present the analysis of simultaneous XMM–Newton and NuSTAR observations of the hyper-Eddington Seyfert 1 galaxy IRAS 04416+1215, carried out in 2020. The main goal of these observations is to investigate the properties of the X-ray corona, as well as the structure of the accretion flow and of the circumnuclear environment, in this regime of extreme accretion. IRAS 04416+1215 has one of the highest Eddington ratio (λEdd ≃ 472) in the local Universe. It shows an interesting spectral shape, very similar to the standard narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxy’s spectra, with the presence of multiphase absorption structure composed of three phases, whose estimate of the minimum and maximum distances suggests two different interpretations, one consistent with the three X-ray winds being cospatial, and possibly driven by magnetohydrodynamical processes, the other consistent with the multiphase winds being also multiscale. The X-ray spectrum of IRAS 04416+1215 also has a prominent soft excess component and a hard X-ray emission dominated by a reflection component. Moreover, our detailed spectral analysis shows that IRAS 04416+1215 has the lowest coronal temperature measured so far by NuSTAR (kTe = 3–22 keV, depending on the model). This is consistent with a hybrid coronal plasma, in which the primary continuum emission is driven by pair production due to high-energy tail of the energy distribution of non-thermal electrons.

Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) are carbon-based molecules resulting from the union of aromatic rings and related species, which are likely responsible for strong infrared emission features (3.3, 6.2, 7.7, 8.6, 11.3 and 12.7 microns). In this work, using a sample of 50 Seyfert galaxies (DL300-400) as well as neutral species. By subtracting the spectrum of the central source from the total, we compare the PAH emission in the central vs extended region of a small sample of AGN. In contrast to the findings for the central regions of AGN-dominated systems, the PAH ratios measured in the extended regions of both type 1 and type 2 Seyfert galaxies can be explained assuming similar PAH molecular size distribution and ionized fractions of molecules to those seen in central regions of star-forming galaxies (100, Comment: 29 pages, 21 figures, 6 tables, MNRAS, accepted 2021 October 22

Many lines of reasoning suggest that external galaxies should host planetary systems, but detecting them by methods typically used in our own Galaxy is not possible. An alternative approach is to study the temporal behaviour of X-rays emitted by bright extragalactic X-ray sources, where an orbiting planet would temporarily block the X-rays and cause a brief eclipse. We report on such a potential event in the X-ray binary M51-ULS-1 in the galaxy M51. We examined a range of explanations for the observed X-ray dip, including a variety of transiting objects and enhancements in the density of gas and dust. The latter are ruled out by the absence of changes in X-ray colours, save any with sharp density gradients that cannot be probed with our data. Instead, the data are well fit by a planet transit model in which the eclipser is most likely to be the size of Saturn. We also find that the locations of possible orbits are consistent with the survival of a planet bound to a mass-transfer binary. A brightness dip in the extragalactic X-ray binary M51-ULS-1 can be well fit by a planet transit model in which the eclipser is most likely Saturn-sized. The locations of possible orbits are consistent with the survival of a planet bound to a mass-transfer binary.

According to the standard cosmological scenario, the large galaxies that we observe today have reached their current mass via mergers with smaller galaxy satellites (Moore et al.1999). This hierarchical process is expected to take place on smaller scales for the satellites themselves, that should build-up from the accretion of smaller building blocks (D'Onghia & Lake 2008). The best chance we have to test this prediction is by looking at the most massive satellite of the Milky Way (MW): the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). Smaller galaxies have been revealed to orbit around the LMC (Erkal & Belokurov 2020, Patel et al. 2020), but so far the only evidence for mutual interactions is related to the orbital interplay with the nearby Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC), which is the most massive LMC satellite. In this work, we report the likely discovery of a past merger event that the LMC experienced with a galaxy with a low star formation efficiency and likely having a stellar mass similar to those of dwarf spheroidal galaxies. This former LMC satellite has now completely dissolved, depositing the old globular cluster (GC) NGC 2005 as part of its debris. This GC is the only surviving witness of this ancient merger event, recognizable through its peculiar chemical composition. We present a near-infrared spectroscopic survey of narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxies in the southern hemisphere (using the SOFI instrument on the ESO-NTT telescope), sampled from optical surveys. We examine the kinematics of the broad-line region, probed by the emission line width of hydrogen (Pa$\alpha$ and H$\beta$). We observed 57 objects, of which we could firmly measure Pa$\alpha$ in 49 cases. We find that a single Lorentzian fit (preferred on theoretical grounds) is preferred over multi-component Gaussian fits to the line profiles; a lack of narrow-line region emission, overwhelmed by the pole-on view of the broad line region (BLR) light, supports this. We recompute the catalog black hole (BH) mass estimates, using the values of FWHM and luminosity of H$\beta$, both from catalog values and re-fitted Lorentzian values. We find a relationship slope greater than unity compared to the catalog values. We ascribe this to contamination by galactic light or difficulties with line flux measurements. However, the comparison of masses computed by the fitted Lorentzian and Gaussian measurements show a slope close to unity. Comparing the BH masses estimated from both Pa$\alpha$ and H$\beta$, the line widths and fluxes shows deviations from expected; in general, however, the computed BH masses are comparable. We posit a scenario where an intermixture of dusty and dust-free clouds (or alternately a structured atmosphere) differentially absorbs the line radiation of the BLR, due to dust absorption and hydrogen bound-free absorption., Comment: Accepted for publication by MNRAS. 15 pages, 15 figures

We estimate the 3D density profile of the Galactic dark matter (DM) halo within $r \lesssim 30$ kpc from the Galactic centre by using the astrometric data for halo RR Lyrae stars from Gaia DR2. We model both the stellar halo distribution function and the Galactic potential, fully taking into account the survey selection function, the observational errors, and the missing line-of-sight velocity data for RR Lyrae stars. With a Bayesian MCMC method, we infer the model parameters, including the density flattening of the DM halo $q$, which is assumed to be constant as a function of radius. We find that 99\% of the posterior distribution of $q$ is located at $q>0.963$, which strongly disfavours a flattened DM halo. We cannot draw any conclusions as to whether the Galactic DM halo at $r \lesssim 30$ kpc is prolate, because we restrict ourselves to axisymmetric oblate halo models with $q\leq1$. Our result is inconsistent with predictions from cosmological hydrodynamical simulations that advocate more oblate ($\langle{q}\rangle \sim0.8 \pm 0.15$) DM halos within $\sim 15\%$ of the virial radius for Milky-Way-sized galaxies. An alternative possibility, based on our validation tests with a cosmological simulation, is that the true value $q$ of the Galactic halo could be consistent with cosmological simulations but that disequilibrium in the Milky Way potential is inflating our measurement of $q$ by 0.1-0.2. We investigate a sample of seven edge-on spiral galaxies using Chandra observations. Edge-on spiral galaxies allow us to clearly separate source associated with their star-forming regions versus the outer edges of the system; offering a clear advantage over other systems. We uncover a number of X-ray point sources across these galaxies, and after eliminating contaminating foreground and background sources, we identify 12 candidate ultraluminous X-ray sources. All of these sources are projected onto the central regions, implying that the majority of ULXs in this sample of spiral galaxies are disk/bulge, and thus not halo sources. This also includes two transient ULXs, which may be long-duration transients and low mass X-ray binaries. This finding illustrates the need for further studies of transient ULXs., accepted to MNRAS

We report the discovery of [NeV]3426 emission, in addition to HeII4686 emission, in six compact star-forming galaxies. These observations considerably increase the sample of eight such galaxies discovered earlier by our group. For four of the new galaxies, the optical observations are supplemented by near-infrared spectra. All galaxies, but one, have HII regions that are dense, with electron number densities of ~300-700 cm-3. They are all characterised by high Hbeta equivalent widths EW(Hbeta)~190-520A and high O32=[OIII]5007/[OII]3727 ratios of 10-30, indicating young starburst ages and the presence of high ionization radiation. All are low-metallicity objects with 12+logO/H=7.46-7.88. The spectra of all galaxies show a low-intensity broad component of the Halpha line and five out of six objects show Wolf-Rayet features. Comparison with photoionization models shows that pure stellar ionization radiation from massive stars is not hard enough to produce such strong [NeV] and HeII emission in our galaxies. The [NeV]3426/HeII4686 flux ratio of ~1.2 in J1222+3602 is consistent with some contribution of active galactic nucleus ionizing radiation. An empirical model is presented that links the demographics of AGN to their ensemble X-ray variability properties. Observations on the incidence of AGN in galaxies are combined with (i) models of the Power Spectrum Density (PSD) of the flux variations of AGN and (ii) parameterisations of the black-hole mass vs stellar-mass scaling relation, to predict the mean excess variance of active black-hole populations in cosmological volumes. We show that the comparison of the model with observational measurements of the ensemble excess variance as a function of X-ray luminosity provides a handle on both the PSD models and the black-hole mass vs stellar mass relation. We find strong evidence against a PSD model that is described by a broken power-law and a constant overall normalisation. Instead our analysis indicates that the amplitude of the PSD depends on the physical properties of the accretion events, such as the Eddington ratio and/or the black hole mass. We also find that current observational measurements of the ensemble excess variance are consistent with the black-hole mass vs stellar mass relation of local spheroids based on dynamically determined black-hole masses. We also discuss future prospects of the proposed approach to jointly constrain the PSD of AGN and the black-hole mass vs stellar mass relation as a function of redshift. We present a new study of the 1.7 Mpc KAT-7-discovered giant radio galaxy, J0133$-$1302, which was carried out using GMRT data at 323 and 608 MHz. This source is located at RA $01^h33^m13^s$ and Dec $-13^{\circ}03^\prime00^{\prime\prime}$ and has a photometric redshift of $\sim$0.3. We discovered unusual morphological properties of the source which include lobes that are exceptionally asymmetric, where the upper lobe is much further from the core when compared to the lower lobe, and a complex structure of the upper lobe. This complex structure of the upper lobe hints at the presence of another source, in close proximity to the edge of the lobe, which resembles a bent-double, or distorted bent tail (DBT) radio galaxy. Both the upper lobe and the lower lobe have a steep spectrum, and the synchrotron age of the lower lobe should be less than about 44 Myr. The core has an inverted spectrum, and our results suggest that the parent galaxy in J0133$-$1302 is starting a new jet activity. Our spectral analysis indicates that this source could be a GigaHertz Peaked Spectrum (GPS) radio galaxy., 13 pages, 15 figures. Possible formation scenarios of supermassive black holes in the early universe include rapid growth from less massive seed black holes (BHs) via super-Eddington accretion or runaway mergers, yet both of these scenarios would require seed BHs to efficiently sink to and be trapped in the galactic center via dynamical friction. This may not be true for their complicated dynamics in clumpy high-$z$ galaxies. In this work we study this "sinking problem" with state-of-the-art high-resolution cosmological simulations, combined with both direct $N$-body integration of seed BH trajectories and post-processing of randomly generated test particles with a newly developed dynamical friction estimator. We find that seed BHs less massive than $10^8\,M_\odot$ (i.e., all but the already-supermassive seeds) cannot efficiently sink in typical high-$z$ galaxies. We also discuss two possible solutions: dramatically increasing the number of seeds such that one seed can end up trapped in the galactic center by chance, or seed BHs being embedded in dense structures (e.g. star clusters) with effective masses above the mass threshold. Massive black holes (MBHs) inhabit galaxy centers, power luminous quasars and Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) and shape their cosmic environment with the energy they produce. The origins of MBHs remain a mystery and the recent detection by LIGO/Virgo of an almost 150 solar mass black hole has revitalized the question of whether there is a continuum between "stellar" and "massive" black holes and what the seeds of MBHs are. Seeds could have formed in the first galaxies, or could be also related to the collapse of horizon-sized regions in the early Universe. Understanding the origins of MBHs straddles fundamental physics, cosmology and astrophysics and it bridges the fields of gravitational wave physics and traditional astronomy. With several facilities in the next 10-15 years we foresee the possibility of discovering MBHs' avenues of formation. In this article we link three main topics: the channels of black hole seed formation, the journey from seeds to massive black holes, the diagnostics on the origins of MBHs. We present a novel technique to study Type Ia supernovae by constraining surviving companions of historical extragalactic SN by combining archival photographic plates and Hubble Space Telescope imaging. We demonstrate this technique for Supernova 1972E, the nearest known SN Ia in over 125 years. Some models of Type Ia supernovae describe a white dwarf with a non-degenerate companion that donates enough mass to trigger thermonuclear detonation. Hydrodynamic simulations and stellar evolution models show that these donor stars survive the explosion, and show increased luminosity for at least a thousand years. Thus, late-time observations of the exact location of a supernova after its ejecta have faded can constrain the presence of a surviving donor star and progenitor models. We find the explosion site of SN 1972E by analyzing 17 digitized photographic plates taken with the European Southern Observatory 1m Schmidt and 1 plate taken with the Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory 1.5m telescope from 1972-1974. Using the \textit{Gaia} eDR3 catalog to determine Supernova 1972E's equatorial coordinates yields: $\alpha$ = 13$^h$ 39$^m$ 52.708$^s$ $\pm$ 0.004$^s$ and $\delta$ = $-$31\degree 40' 8\farcs97 $\pm$ 0\farcs04 (ICRS). In 2005, HST/ACS imaged NGC 5253, the host galaxy of SN 1972E, with the $F435W$, $F555W$, and $F814W$ filters covering the explosion site. The nearest source detected is offset by 3.0 times our positional precision, and is inconsistent with the colors expected of a surviving donor star. Thus, the 2005 HST observation rules out all Helium-star companion models, and the most luminous main-sequence companion model currently in the literature. The circumgalactic medium (CGM) encodes signatures of the galaxy-formation process, including the interaction of galactic outflows driven by stellar and supermassive black hole (SMBH) feedback with the gaseous halo. Moving beyond spherically symmetric radial profiles, we study the \textit{angular} dependence of CGM properties around $z=0$ massive galaxies in the IllustrisTNG simulations. We characterize the angular signal of density, temperature, and metallicity of the CGM as a function of galaxy stellar mass, halo mass, distance, and SMBH mass, via stacking. TNG predicts that the CGM is anisotropic in its thermodynamical properties and chemical content over a large mass range, $M_*\sim10^{10-11.5}M_\odot$. Along the minor axis directions, gas density is diluted, whereas temperature and metallicity are enhanced. These feedback-induced anisotropies in the CGM have a magnitude of $0.1-0.3$ dex, extend out to the halo virial radius, and peak at Milky Way-like masses, $M_*\sim10^{10.8}M_\odot$. In TNG, this mass scale corresponds to the onset of efficient SMBH feedback and the production of strong outflows. By comparing the anisotropic signals predicted by TNG versus other simulations -- Illustris and EAGLE -- we find that each simulation produces distinct signatures and mass dependencies, implying that this phenomenon is sensitive to the underlying physical models. Finally, we explore X-ray emission as an observable of this CGM anistropy, finding that future X-ray observations, including the eROSITA all-sky survey, will be able to detect and characterize this signal, particularly in terms of an angular modulation of the X-ray hardness., Comment: 19 pages, 9 figures + Appendix. When the light from a distant object passes very near to a foreground galaxy or cluster, gravitational lensing can cause it to appear as multiple images on the sky. If the source is variable, it can be used to constrain the cosmic expansion rate and dark energy models. Achieving these cosmological goals requires many lensed transients with precise time delay measurements. Lensed supernovae (SN) are attractive for this purpose because they have relatively simple photometric behavior, with well-understood light curve shapes and colours $-$ in contrast to the stochastic variation of quasars. Here we report the discovery of a multiply-imaged supernova, AT2016jka ("SN Requiem"). It appeared in an evolved galaxy at $z=1.95$, gravitationally lensed by a foreground galaxy cluster. It is likely a Type Ia supernova $-$ the explosion of a low-mass stellar remnant, whose light curve can be used to measure cosmic distances. Gravitational waves (GWs) may be magnified or de-magnified due to lensing. This phenomenon will bias the distance estimation based on the matched filtering technique. Via the multi-sphere ray-tracing technique, we study the GW magnification effect and selection effect with particular attention to the stellar-mass binary black holes (BBHs). We find that, for the observed luminosity distance $\lesssim 3~\mathrm{Gpc}$, which is the aLIGO/Virgo observational horizon limit, the average magnification keeps as unity, namely unbiased estimation, with the relative distance uncertainty $\sigma(\hat{d})/\hat{d}\simeq0.5\%\sim1\%$. Beyond this observational horizon, the estimation bias can not be ignored, and with the scatters $\sigma(\hat{d})/\hat{d} = 1\%\sim 15\%$. Furthermore, we forecast these numbers for Einstein Telescope. We find that the average magnification keeps closely as unity for the observed luminosity distance $\lesssim 90~\mathrm{Gpc}$. The luminosity distance estimation error due to lensing for Einstein Telescope is about $\sigma(\hat{d})/\hat{d} \simeq 10\%$ for the luminosity distance $\gtrsim 25~\mathrm{Gpc}$. Unlike the aLIGO/Virgo case, this sizable error is not due to the selection effect. It purely comes from the unavoidably accumulated lensing magnification. Moreover, we investigated the effects of the orientation angle and the BH mass distribution models. We construct a parametric SED model which is able to reproduce the average observed SDSS-UKIDSS-WISE quasar colours to within one tenth of a magnitude across a wide range of redshift $(0M_i>-29)$. This model is shown to provide accurate predictions for the colours of known quasars which are less luminous than those used to calibrate the model parameters, and also those at higher redshifts $z>5$. Using a single parameter, the model encapsulates an up-to-date understanding of the intra-population variance in the rest-frame ultraviolet and optical emission lines of luminous quasars. At fixed redshift, there are systematic changes in the average quasar colours with apparent i-band magnitude, which we find to be well explained by the contribution from the host galaxy and our parametrization of the emission-line properties. By including redshift as an additional free parameter, the model could be used to provide photometric redshifts for individual objects. For the population as a whole we find that the average emission line and host galaxy contributions can be well described by simple functions of luminosity which account for the observed changes in the average quasar colours across $18.1, Comment: 18 pages, 16 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS. The co-evolution between central supermassive black holes (BH), their host galaxies, and dark matter halos is still a matter of intense debate. Present theoretical models suffer from large uncertainties and degeneracies, for example, between the fraction of accreting sources and their characteristic accretion rate. In recent work we showed that Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) clustering represents a powerful tool to break degeneracies when analysed in terms of mean BH mass, and that AGN bias at fixed stellar mass is largely independent of most of the input parameters, such as the AGN duty cycle and the mean scaling between BH mass and host galaxy stellar mass. In this paper we take advantage of our improved semi-empirical methodology and recent clustering data derived from large AGN samples at $z \sim 1.2$, demonstrate that the AGN bias as a function of host galaxy stellar mass is a crucial diagnostic of the BH--galaxy connection, and is highly dependent on the scatter around the BH mass--galaxy mass scaling relation and on the relative fraction of satellite and central active BHs. Current data at $z \sim 1.2$ favour relatively high values of AGN in satellites, pointing to a major role of disc instabilities in triggering AGN, unless a high minimum host halo mass is assumed. The data are not decisive on the magnitude/covariance of the BH-galaxy scatter at $z \sim 1.2$ and intermediate host masses $M_\mathrm{star} \lesssim 10^{11} \,\mathrm{M}_\odot$. The concept of stars being tidally ripped apart and consumed by a massive black hole (MBH) lurking in the center of a galaxy first captivated theorists in the late 1970's. The observational evidence for these rare but illuminating phenomena for probing otherwise dormant MBHs, first emerged in archival searches of the soft X-ray ROSAT All-Sky Survey in the 1990's; but has recently accelerated with the increasing survey power in the optical time domain, with tidal disruption events (TDEs) now regarded as a class of optical nuclear transients with distinct spectroscopic features. Multiwavelength observations of TDEs have revealed panchromatic emission, probing a wide range of scales, from the innermost regions of the accretion flow, to the surrounding circumnuclear medium. I review the current census of 56 TDEs reported in the literature, and their observed properties can be summarized as follows: $\bullet$ The optical light curves follow a power-law decline from peak that scales with the inferred central black hole mass as expected for the fallback rate of the stellar debris, but the rise time does not. $\bullet$ The UV/optical and soft X-ray thermal emission come from different spatial scales, and their intensity ratio has a large dynamic range, and is highly variable, providing important clues as to what is powering the two components. $\bullet$ They can be grouped into three spectral classes, and those with Bowen fluorescence line emission show a preference for a hotter and more compact line-emitting region, while those with only He II emission lines are the rarest class., 46 pages, 10 figures, author's version (before copy-editing) of invited review to appear in Annual Reviews of Astronomy and Astrophysics, Volume 59 (2021)

A general catalog of active galactic nuclei (AGN) has been created from identified optical sources of X-ray data from the Hamburg-ROSAT Catalog (HRC) and the Byurakan-Hamburg ROSAT Catalog (BHRC). Optical and multiwavelength data from both catalogs have been examined in order to eliminate erroneous AGN and add new ones. The result is a new catalog of 4253 AGN with X-ray emission (ROSAT BSC/FSC). All of these sources are either AGN or have been classified as candidates. All the multiwave data (gamma, X-ray, UV, optical, IR, radio) have been retrieved for these objects using new catalogs and statistical studies have been made. Attempts have been made to find the relation between the radiative fluxes in different ranges for various types of sources and to determine their characteristics, thereby confirming their membership as AGN. The X-ray properties of these sources have been analyzed in order to find the boundary between normal galaxies and X-ray AGN, and an attempt has been made to find hidden AGN.

Next generation telescopes such as the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) and the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope (NGRST) will enable us to study the first billion years of our Universe in unprecedented detail. In this work we use the ASTRAEUS (semi-numerical rAdiative tranSfer coupling of galaxy formaTion and Reionization in N-body dArk mattEr simUlationS) framework, that couples galaxy formation and reionization (for a wide range of reionization feedback models), to estimate the cosmic variance expected in the UV Luminosity Function (UV LF) and the Stellar Mass Function (SMF) in JWST surveys. We find that different reionization scenarios play a minor role in the cosmic variance. Most of the cosmic variance is completely driven by the underlying density field and increases above $100\%$ for ${\rm M}_{\rm UV} \sim -17.5 (-20)$ at $z =12 (6)$ for the JADES-deep survey (the deep JWST Advanced Extragalactic Survey with an area of 46 arcmin$^2$); the cosmic variance decreases with an increasing survey area roughly independently of redshift. We find that the faint-end (${\rm M}_{\rm UV} > -17$) slope of the Lyman Break Galaxies (LBGs) UV LF becomes increasingly shallower with increasing reionization feedback and show how JWST observations will be able to distinguish between different models of reionization feedback at $z>9$, even accounting for cosmic variance. We also show the environments (in terms of density and ionization fields)of Lyman Break Galaxies during the EoR, finding that the underlying over-density and ionization fraction scale positively with the UV luminosity. Finally, we also provide a public software tool to allow interested readers to compute cosmic variance for different redshifts and survey areas., 16 pages, 13 figures. A comparative analysis of the observational characteristics of fast radio bursts at the frequencies 111 and 1400 MHz is carried out. The distributions of radio bursts by the dispersion measure are constructed. At both frequencies, they are described by a lognormal distribution with the parameters $\mu =6.2$ $\sigma = 0.7$. The dependence $\tau_{sc}(DM)$ of the scattering value on the dispersion measure at 111 MHz and 1400 MHz is also constructed. This dependence is fundamentally different from the dependence for pulsars. A comparative analysis of the relationship between the scattering of pulses and the dispersion measure at 1400 MHz and 111 MHz showed that for both frequencies it has the form $\tau_{sc}(DM)\sim DM^k$, where $k = 0.49 \pm 0.18$ and $k = 0.43 \pm 0.15$ for the frequencies 111 and 1400 MHz, respectively. The obtained dependence is explained within the framework of the assumption of the extragalactic occurrence of fast radio bursts and an almost uniform distribution of matter in intergalactic space. From the dependence $\tau_{sc}(DM)$ a total estimate of the contribution to the matter of the halo of our and the host galaxy to $DM$ is obtained $DM_{halo} + \frac{DM_{host}}{1+z}\approx 60\;{\rm pc/cm}^3$. Based on the LogN - LogS dependence, the average spectral index of radio bursts is derived $\alpha = - 0.63 \pm 0.20$ provided that the statistical properties of these samples at 111 and 1400 MHz are the same., Comment: 47 pages, 25 figures, 3 tables

We present Ly$\alpha$ and ultraviolet-continuum (UV) luminosity functions (LFs) of galaxies and active galactic nuclei (AGN) at $z=2.0-3.5$ determined by the un-targetted optical spectroscopic survey of the Hobby-Eberly Telescope Dark Energy Experiment (HETDEX). We combine deep Subaru imaging with HETDEX spectra resulting in $11.4$ deg$^2$ of fiber-spectra sky coverage, obtaining $18320$ galaxies spectroscopically identified with Ly$\alpha$ emission, $2126$ of which host type 1 AGN showing broad (FWHM$~>1000$ km s$^{-1}$) Ly$\alpha$ emission lines. We derive the Ly$\alpha$ (UV) LF over 2 orders of magnitude covering bright galaxies and AGN in $\log L_\mathrm{Ly\alpha}/\mathrm{[erg~s^{-1}]}=43.3-45.5$ ($-27-21$) type 1 AGN increases from $z\sim2$ to $z\sim0$ as opposed to the evolution of bright ($M_\mathrm{UV}, Comment: 27 pages, 19 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

The diffuse extragalactic background light (EBL) is formed by ultraviolet (UV), optical, and infrared (IR) photons mainly produced by star formation processes over the history of the Universe, and contains essential information about galaxy evolution and cosmology. Here, we present a new determination of the evolving EBL spectral energy distribution using a novel approach purely based on galaxy data aiming to reduce current uncertainties on the higher redshifts and IR intensities. Our calculations use multiwavelength observations from the UV to the far-IR of a sample of approximately 150,000 galaxies detected up to $z\sim 6$ in the five fields of the Cosmic Assembly Near-Infrared Deep Extragalactic Legacy Survey (CANDELS) from the Hubble Space Telescope. This is one of the most comprehensive and deepest multi-wavelength galaxy datasets ever obtained. These unprecedented resources allow us to derive the overall EBL evolution up to $z\sim 6$ and its uncertainties. Our results agree with cosmic observables estimated from galaxy surveys and $\gamma$-ray attenuation such as monochromatic luminosity densities, including those in the far-IR, and star formation rate densities, also at the highest redshits. Observed rotation curves in star-forming galaxies indicate a puzzling dearth of dark matter in extended flat cores within haloes of mass $\geq\! 10^{12}M_\odot$ at $z\!\sim\! 2$. This is not reproduced by current cosmological simulations, and supernova-driven outflows are not effective in such massive haloes. We address a hybrid scenario where post-compaction merging satellites heat up the dark-matter cusps by dynamical friction, allowing AGN-driven outflows to generate cores. Using analytic and semi-analytic models (SatGen), we estimate the dynamical-friction heating as a function of satellite compactness for a cosmological sequence of mergers. Cosmological simulations (VELA) demonstrate that satellites of initial virial masses $>\!10^{11.3}M_\odot$, that undergo wet compactions, become sufficiently compact for significant heating. Constituting a major fraction of the accretion onto haloes $\geq\!10^{12}M_\odot$, these satellites heat-up the cusps in half a virial time at $z\!\sim\! 2$. Using a model for outflow-driven core formation (CuspCore), we demonstrate that the heated dark-matter cusps develop extended cores in response to removal of half the gas mass, while the more compact stellar systems remain intact. The mergers keep the dark matter hot, while the gas supply, fresh and recycled, is sufficient for the AGN outflows. AGN indeed become effective in haloes $\geq\!10^{12}M_\odot$, where the black-hole growth is no longer suppressed by supernovae and its compaction-driven rapid growth is maintained by a hot CGM. For simulations to reproduce the dynamical-friction effects, they should resolve the compaction of the massive satellites and avoid artificial tidal disruption. We find evidence for large-scale clustering amongst Fermi-selected BL Lac objects but not amongst Fermi-selected flat spectrum radio quasars (FSRQs). Using two-point correlation functions, we have investigated the clustering properties of different classes of objects from the Fermi–LAT(Large Area Telescope) 4FGL catalogue. We wanted to test the idea based on optical polarization observations that there might be large volumes of space in which AGN axes are aligned. To do this, we needed a clean sample of blazars as these are objects with their jet axes pointing towards the observer and Fermi sources provide such a sample. We find that high latitude Fermi sources taken as a whole show a significant clustering signal on scales up to 30°. To investigate if all blazars behave in the same way we used he machine learning classifications from the literature, which are based only on gamma-ray information, to separate BL Lac-like objects from FSRQ-like objects. A possible explanation for the clustering signal we find amongst the BL Lac-like objects is that there are indeed large volumes of space in which AGN axes are aligned. This signal might be washed out in FSRQs since they occupy a much larger volume of space. Thus, our results support the idea that large scale polarization alignments could originate from coherent alignments of AGN axes. We speculate that these axis alignments may be related to the well-known intrinsic alignments of galaxy optical position angles.

We construct a new catalog of extragalactic X-ray binaries (XRBs) by matching the latest Chandra source catalog with local galaxy catalogs. Our XRB catalog contains 4430 XRBs hosted by 237 galaxies within ~130 Mpc. As XRBs dominate the X-ray activity in galaxies, the catalog enables us to study the correlations between the total X-ray luminosity of a galaxy $L_{X,\rm tot}$, star formation rate $\dot{\rho}_\star$, and stellar mass $M_\star$. As previously reported, $L_{X,\rm tot}$ is correlated with $\dot{\rho}_\star$ and $M_\star$. In particular, we find that there is a fundamental plane in those three parameters as $\log L_{X,\rm tot}={38.80^{+0.09}_{-0.12}}+\log(\dot{\rho}_\star + \alpha M_\star)$, where $\alpha = {(3.36\pm1.40)\times10^{-11}}\ {\rm yr^{-1}}$. In order to investigate this relation, we construct a phenomenological binary population synthesis model. We find that the high mass XRB and low mass XRB fraction in formed compact object binary systems is ~9% and ~0.04%, respectively. Utilizing the latest XMM-Newton, and Swift X-ray source catalog data sets, additional XRB candidates are also found resulting in 5757 XRBs hosted by 311 galaxies., Comment: 18 pages, 18 figures, accepted for publication in PASJ

According to radiative models, radio galaxies and quasars are predicted to produce gamma rays from the earliest stages of their evolution. Exploring their high-energy emission is crucial for providing information on the most energetic processes, the origin and the structure of the newly born radio jets. Taking advantage of more than 11 yr of Fermi-LAT data, we investigate the gamma-ray emission of 162 young radio sources (103 galaxies and 59 quasars), the largest sample of young radio sources used so far for such a gamma-ray study. We separately analyse each source and perform the first stacking analysis of this class of sources to investigate the gamma-ray emission of the undetected sources. We detect significant gamma-ray emission from 11 young radio sources, 4 galaxies, and 7 quasars, including the discovery of significant gamma-ray emission from the compact radio galaxy PKS 1007+142 (z = 0.213). The cumulative signal of below-threshold young radio sources is not significantly detected. However, it is about one order of magnitude lower than those derived from the individual sources, providing stringent upper limits on the gamma-ray emission from young radio galaxies (Fγ < 4.6 × 10−11 ph cm−2 s−1) and quasars (Fγ < 10.1 × 10−11 ph cm−2 s−1), and enabling a comparison with the models proposed. With this analysis of more than a decade of Fermi-LAT observations, we can conclude that while individual young radio sources can be bright gamma-ray emitters, the collective gamma-ray emission of this class of sources is not bright enough to be detected by Fermi-LAT.

How does the environment affect active galactic nucleus (AGN) activity? We investigated this question in an extinction-free way, by selecting 1120 infrared galaxies in the $AKARI$ North Ecliptic Pole Wide field at redshift $z$ $\leq$ 1.2. A unique feature of the $AKARI$ satellite is its continuous 9-band infrared (IR) filter coverage, providing us with an unprecedentedly large sample of IR spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of galaxies. By taking advantage of this, for the first time, we explored the AGN activity derived from SED modelling as a function of redshift, luminosity, and environment. We quantified AGN activity in two ways: AGN contribution fraction (ratio of AGN luminosity to the total IR luminosity), and AGN number fraction (ratio of number of AGNs to the total galaxy sample). We found that galaxy environment (normalised local density) does not greatly affect either definitions of AGN activity of our IRG/LIRG samples (log ${\rm L}_{\rm TIR}$ $\leq$ 12). However, we found a different behavior for ULIRGs (log ${\rm L}_{\rm TIR}$ $>$ 12). At our highest redshift bin (0.7 $\lesssim$ z $\lesssim$ 1.2), AGN activity increases with denser environments, but at the intermediate redshift bin (0.3 $\lesssim$ z $\lesssim$ 0.7), the opposite is observed. These results may hint at a different physical mechanism for ULIRGs. The trends are not statistically significant (p $\geq$ 0.060 at the intermediate redshift bin, and p $\geq$ 0.139 at the highest redshift bin). We present for the first time the timing and spectral analyses for a narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxy, SBS 1353+564, using \it{XMM-Newton} and \it{Swift} multi-band observations from 2007 to 2019. Our main results are as follows: 1) The temporal variability of SBS 1353+564 is random, while the hardness ratio is relatively constant over a time span of 13 years; 2) We find a prominent soft X-ray excess feature below 2 keV, which cannot be well described by a simple blackbody component; 3) After comparing the two most prevailing models for interpreting the origin of the soft X-ray excess, we find that the relativistically smeared reflection model is unable to fit the data above 5 keV well and the X-ray spectra do not show any reflection features, such as the Fe K\alpha emission line. However, the warm corona model can obtain a good fitting result. For the warm corona model, we try to use three different sets of spin values to fit the data and derive different best-fitting parameter sets; 4) We compare the UV/optical spectral data with the extrapolated values of the warm corona model to determine which spin value is more appropriate for this source, and we find that the warm corona model with non-spin can sufficiently account for the soft X-ray excess in SBS 1353+564., Comment: 12 pages, 8 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

Most fast radio burst (FRB) models are built from comparatively common astronomical objects: neutron stars, black holes, and supernova remnants. Yet FRB sources are rare, and most of these objects, found in the Galaxy, do not make FRB. Special and rare circumstances may be required for these common objects to be sources of FRB. The recent discovery of a repeating FRB in a globular cluster belonging to the galaxy M81 suggests a model involving a neutron star and a close binary companion, likely a white dwarf; both neutron stars and close binaries are superabundant in globular clusters. Magnetic interaction is a plausible, though unproven, mechanism of acceleration of relativistic particles that may radiate coherently as FRB. In such a model, the energy source is the orbital kinetic energy, and not limited by the magnetostatic energy of a neutron star. Double neutron star binaries cannot be the observed long-lived repeating FRB sources, but might make much shorter lived sources, and perhaps non-repeating FRB.

We report the discovery of an intrinsically faint, quintuply-imaged, dusty galaxy MACS0600-z6 at a redshift $z=$6.07 viewed through the cluster MACSJ0600.1-2008 ($z$=0.46). A $\simeq4\sigma$ dust detection is seen at 1.2mm as part of the ALMA Lensing Cluster Survey (ALCS), an on-going ALMA Large program, and the redshift is secured via [C II] 158 $\mu$m emission described in a companion paper. In addition, spectroscopic follow-up with GMOS/Gemini-North shows a break in the galaxy's spectrum, consistent with the Lyman break at that redshift. We use a detailed mass model of the cluster and infer a magnification $\mu\gtrsim$30 for the most magnified image of this galaxy, which provides an unprecedented opportunity to probe the physical properties of a sub-luminous galaxy at the end of cosmic reionisation. Based on the spectral energy distribution, we infer lensing-corrected stellar and dust masses of $\rm{2.9^{+11.5}_{-2.3}\times10^9}$ and $\rm{4.8^{+4.5}_{-3.4}\times10^6}$ $\rm{M_{\odot}}$ respectively, a star formation rate of $\rm{9.7^{+22.0}_{-6.6} M_{\odot} yr^{-1}}$, an intrinsic size of $\rm{0.54^{+0.26}_{-0.14}}$ kpc, and a luminosity-weighted age of 200$\pm$100 Myr. Strikingly, the dust production rate in this relatively young galaxy appears to be larger than that observed for equivalent, lower redshift sources. We study the distribution of accretion rates onto supermassive black holes (SMBH) in AGNs of the local Universe ($z0.01$) in the local Universe also depends weakly on $M_\ast$ and is 0.2-1%. These results confirm the trends found in previous studies for the earlier Universe and refine the parameters of the dependence $f(\lambda_{Edd}|M_\ast)$ at $z, Comment: 16 pages, 12 figures. We outline theoretical predictions for extended emission from MgII, tracing cool ~10^4 K gas in the circumgalactic medium (CGM) of star-forming galaxies in the high-resolution TNG50 cosmological magnetohydrodynamical simulation. We synthesize surface brightness maps of this strong rest-frame ultraviolet metal emission doublet (2796, 2803), adopting the assumption that the resonant scattering of MgII can be neglected and connecting to recent and upcoming observations with the Keck/KCWI, VLT/MUSE, and BlueMUSE optical integral field unit spectrographs. Studying galaxies with stellar masses 7.5 < log(M*/M_sun) < 11 at redshifts z=0.3, 0.7, 1 and 2 we find that extended MgII halos in emission, similar to their Lyman-alpha counterparts, are ubiquitous across the galaxy population. Median surface brightness profiles exceed 10^-19 erg/s/cm^2/arcsec^2 in the central ~10s of kpc, and total halo MgII luminosity increases with mass for star-forming galaxies, reaching 10^40 erg/s for M* ~ 10^9.5 Msun. MgII halo sizes increase from a few kpc to > 20 kpc at the highest masses, and sizes are larger for halos in denser environments. MgII halos are highly structured, clumpy, and asymmetric, with isophotal axis ratio increasing with galaxy mass. Similarly, the amount and distribution of MgII emission depends on the star formation activity of the central galaxy. Kinematically, inflowing versus outflowing gas dominates the MgII luminosity at high and low galaxy masses, respectively, although the majority of MgII halo emission at z~0.7 traces near-equilibrium fountain flows and gas with non-negligible rotational support, rather than rapidly outflowing galactic winds., MNRAS 2021, comments welcome

We characterized the kinematics, morphology, and stellar population (SP) properties of a sample of massive compact quiescent galaxies (MCGs, $10 \lesssim \log M_\star$/$M_\odot \lesssim 11$ and $r_{\rm e} \sim 1-3 $kpc) in the MaNGA Survey, with the goal of constraining their formation, assembly history and assessing their relation with non-compact quiescent galaxies. We compared their properties with those of a control sample of median-sized quiescent galaxies ($r_{\rm e} \sim 4-8 $kpc) with similar effective velocity dispersions. MCGs have elevated rotational support, as evidenced by a strong anti-correlation between the Gauss-Hermite moment $h_3$ and $V/\sigma$. In contrast, 30$\%$ of control sample galaxies (CSGs) are slow rotators, and fast-rotating CSGs generally show a weak $h_3-V/\sigma$ anti-correlation. MCGs and CSGs have similar ages, but MCGs are more metal-rich and $\alpha$-enhanced. Both MCGs and CSGs have shallow negative metallicity gradients and flat [$\alpha$/Fe] gradients. On average, MCGs and CSGs have flat age gradients, but CSGs have a significantly larger dispersion of gradient values. The kinematics and SP properties of MCGs suggest that they experienced highly-dissipative gas-rich events, such as mergers, followed by an intense, short, and centrally concentrated burst of star formation, between 4 to 10 Gyr ago ($z\sim0.4-2$), and had a quiet accretion history since then. This sequence of events might be analogous to, although less extreme than, the compaction events which formed compact quiescent galaxies at $z \sim 2$. The small sizes of MCGs, and the high efficiency and short duration of their last star formation episode suggest that they are descendants of compact post-starburst galaxies., Comment: 19 pages, 18 figures (not including appendices). Water megamasers at 22 GHz with a gas disk configuration in galaxies provide the most precise measurements of supermassive black hole masses, as well as independent constraints on the Hubble constant in the nearby universe. The existence of other maser types, such as jet or outflow masers, represents another tracer for AGN science. However, the detection rate of water megamasers in galaxies is extremely low. Over 40 years, only $\sim$ 160 galaxies are found to harbour maser emission, and $\sim$ 30\% of them show features in their maser emission that indicate a disk-like geometry. Therefore, increasing the detection rate of masers is a crucial task to allow expanding on maser studies. We present a comparison of mid-infrared spectroscopic data between a maser galaxy sample and a Seyfert 2 control sample. We find that maser galaxies show significant peculiarities in their mid-infrared spectra: (1) Maser galaxies tend to present stronger silicate absorption at $\tau$ 9.7 $\mu$m than the control sample, (2) PAH 11.3 $\mu$m emission in maser galaxies is much weaker than in the control sample, (3) spectral indices at 20-30 $\mu$m are steeper in maser galaxies than in the control sample and tend to be mid-infrared enhanced population. We conclude that there may be good indicators in mid-infrared and far-infrared which could differentiate maser and non-maser Seyfert 2 galaxies. The properties of quasar-host galaxies might be determined by the growth and feedback of their supermassive black holes (SMBHs, 108−10 M⊙). We investigate such connection with a suite of cosmological simulations of massive (halo mass ≈1012 M⊙) galaxies at z ≃ 6 that include a detailed subgrid multiphase gas and accretion model. BH seeds of initial mass 105 M⊙ grow mostly by gas accretion, and become SMBH by z = 6 setting on the observed MBH−M⋆ relation without the need for a boost factor. Although quasar feedback crucially controls the SMBH growth, its impact on the properties of the host galaxy at z = 6 is negligible. In our model, quasar activity can both quench (via gas heating) or enhance (by interstellar medium overpressurization) star formation. However, we find that the star formation history is insensitive to such modulation as it is largely dominated, at least at z > 6, by cold gas accretion from the environment that cannot be hindered by the quasar energy deposition. Although quasar-driven outflows can achieve velocities $\gt 1000~\rm km~s^{-1}$, only ≈4 per cent of the outflowing gas mass can actually escape from the host galaxy. These findings are only loosely constrained by available data, but can guide observational campaigns searching for signatures of quasar feedback in early galaxies.

We study the spectro-temporal characteristics of two repeating fast radio bursts (FRBs), namely, FRB 20180916B and FRB 20180814A, and combine the results with those from our earlier analysis on FRB 20121102A. The relationship between the frequency drift rate, or slope, of individual sub-bursts and their temporal duration is investigated. We consider a broad sample of possible dispersion measure (DM) values for each source to understand the range of valid sub-burst slope and duration measurements for all bursts and to constrain our results. We find good agreement with an inverse scaling law between the two parameters previously predicted using a simple dynamical relativistic model. The remarkably similar behaviour observed in all sources provides strong evidence that a single and common underlying physical phenomenon is responsible for the emission of signals from these three FRBs, despite their associations with different types of host galaxies at various redshifts. We present an analysis of all the archival high resolution spectra of the Narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxy Mrk~335 obtained with Reflection Grating Spectrometer (RGS) on board \textit{XMM-Newton}. The spectra show rich emission and absorption features in low and intermediate flux intervals. We model the emission lines with the \textsc{pion\_xs} grid and try to find any possible correlation between the properties of the emitting gas and the source flux. Current data does not allow detailed trace of the response of the line emitting gas to the X-ray flux of Mrk~335, but the flux of the X-ray lines is significantly less variable than the X-ray continuum. We also find that the warm absorber's properties are not correlated with the flux variability. From the latest \textit{XMM-Newton} observation in 2019 December, we find that the photoionized emission and distant reflection components have not responded to the flux drop of Mrk~335 from 2018 July. However, the possible existence of partial covering absorber in the 2018--2019 low state of Mrk~335 makes it difficult to constrain the scale of the emitting gas using this lack of response., 11 pages, 6 figures

We investigate the contribution of sub-Chandrasekhar mass Type Ia supernovae to the chemical enrichment of the Gaia Sausage galaxy, the progenitor of a significant merger event in the early life of the Milky Way. Using a combination of data from Nissen & Schuster (2010), the 3rd GALAH data release (with 1D NLTE abundance corrections) and APOGEE data release 16, we fit analytic chemical evolution models to a 9-dimensional chemical abundance space (Fe, Mg, Si, Ca, Cr, Mn, Ni, Cu, Zn) in particular focusing on the iron-peak elements, Mn and Ni. We find that low [Mn/Fe] $\sim-0.15\,\mathrm{dex}$ and low [Ni/Fe] $\sim-0.3\,\mathrm{dex}$ Type Ia yields are required to explain the observed trends beyond the [$\alpha$/Fe] knee of the Gaia Sausage (approximately at [Fe/H] $=-1.4\,\mathrm{dex}$). Comparison to theoretical yield calculations indicate a significant contribution from sub-Chandrasekhar mass Type Ia supernovae in this system (from $\sim60$% to $100$% depending on the theoretical model with an additional $\pm10$% systematic from NLTE corrections). We compare to results from other Local Group environments including dwarf spheroidal galaxies, the Magellanic Clouds and the Milky Way's bulge, finding the Type Ia [Mn/Fe] yield must be metallicity-dependent. Our results suggest that sub-Chandrasekhar mass channels are a significant, perhaps even dominant, contribution to Type Ia supernovae in metal-poor systems, whilst more metal-rich systems could be explained by metallicity-dependent sub-Chandrasekhar mass yields, possibly with additional progenitor mass variation related to star formation history, or an increased contribution from Chandrasekhar mass channels at higher metallicity., Comment: 23 pages, 12 figures, resubmitted to MNRAS following referee's comments

For most of their lifetime, super-massive black holes (SMBHs) commonly found in galactic nuclei obtain mass from the ambient at a rate well below the Eddington limit, which is mediated by a radiatively inefficient, hot accretion flow. Both theory and numerical simulations predict that a strong wind must exist in such hot accretion flows. The wind is of special interest not only because it is an indispensable ingredient of accretion, but perhaps more importantly, it is believed to play a crucial role in the evolution of the host galaxy via the so-called kinetic mode AGN feedback. Observational evidence for this wind, however, remains scarce and indirect. Here we report the detection of a hot outflow from the low-luminosity active galactic nucleus in M81, based on {\it Chandra} high-resolution X-ray spectroscopy. The outflow is evidenced by a pair of Fe XXVI Ly$\alpha$ lines redshifted and blueshifted at a bulk line-of-sight velocity of $\pm2.8\times10^3 \rm~km~s^{-1}$ and a high Fe XXVI Ly$\alpha$-to-Fe XXV K$\alpha$ line ratio implying a plasma temperature of $1.3\times10^8$ Kelvin. This high-velocity, hot plasma cannot be produced by stellar activity or the accretion inflow onto the SMBH. Our magnetohydrodynamical simulations show, instead, it is naturally explained by a wind from the hot accretion flow, propagating out to $\gtrsim10^6$ times the gravitational radius of the SMBH. The use of continuum emission radio galaxies as cosmological tracers of the large-scale structure will soon move into a new phase. Upcoming surveys from the Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder (ASKAP), MeerKAT, and the Square Kilometre Array project (SKA) will survey the entire available sky down to an ~100uJy flux limit, increasing the number of detected extra-galactic radio sources by several orders of magnitude. External data and machine learning algorithms will also enable some low resolution radial selection (photometric redshift binning) of the sample, increasing the cosmological utility of the sample observed. In this paper, we discuss the flux limit required to detect enough galaxies to decrease the shot noise term in the error to be 10% of the total. We show how future surveys of this type will be limited by available technology. The confusion generated by the intrinsic sizes of galaxies may have the consequence that surveys of this type eventually reach a hard flux limit of ~100nJy, as is predicted by the current modelling of AGN sizes by simulations such as the Tiered Radio Extragalactic Continuum Simulation (T-RECS). Finally, when considering the multi-tracer approach, where galaxies are split by type to measure some bias ratio, we find that there are not enough AGN present to achieve a reasonable level of shot noise for this kind of measurement., 10 pages, 8 figures, submitted to the journal

We report the complex radio properties of the radio galaxy NGC 2329 that resides in the centre of the galaxy cluster Abell 569. For this study, we have used archival data from the Very Large Array (VLA) at various resolutions and frequencies, as well as the Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA). While the wide-angle tailed (WAT) Fanaroff-Riley type I (FR I) radio morphology of the source has been discussed widely in the literature, the nature of the inner lobes has not been as widely discussed. In particular, we note that the inner lobes resemble the bubble-like radio structures observed in Seyfert galaxies. Polarization-sensitive data from the VLA clearly show magnetic field structures consistent with FR Is for the outer lobes and Seyferts for the inner lobes in NGC 2329. FR Is are classified as radio-loud (RL) active galactic nuclei (AGN) and Seyferts as radio-quiet (RQ) AGN, making this source unique. The VLBA shows a one-sided radio jet suggesting a relativistic pc-scale outflow, leading into the inner lobes. Electron lifetime estimates suggest that the outer FR I-like lobes are nearly twice as old ($\sim$45 Myr) as the inner Seyfert-like lobes ($\sim$25 Myr). Gas inflow in this merging cluster seems to have rejuvenated the AGN about $\sim$25 Myr ago, and may have caused a change in the accretion disc state. The complex composite radio morphology of NGC 2329 suggests that the RL/RQ dichotomy is a function of time in the lifecycle of an AGN., 12 pages, 8 figures, 3 tables. The scanning Fabry-Perot interferometer (FPI) - is the oldest method of optical 3D spectroscopy. It is still in use because of the high spectral resolution it provides over a large field of view. The history of the application of this method for the study of extended ob jects (nebulae and galaxies) and the technique of data reduction and analysis are discussed. The paper focuses on the performing observations with the scanning FPI on the 6-m telescope of the Special Astrophysical Observatory of the Russian Academy of Sciences (SAO RAS). The instrument is currently used as a part of the SCORPIO-2 multimode focal reducer. The results of studies of various galactic and extragalactic objects with the scanning FPI on the 6-m telescope - star-forming regions and young stellar objects, spiral, ring, dwarf and interacting galaxies, ionization cones of active galactic nuclei, galactic winds, etc. are briefly discussed.
