Active galactic nuclei (AGNs) can act as black hole assembly lines, funneling some of the stellar-mass black holes from the vicinity of the galactic center into the inner plane of the AGN disk where the black holes can merge through dynamical friction and gravitational wave emission. Here, we show that stars near the galactic center are also brought into the AGN disk, where they can be tidally disrupted by the stellar-mass black holes in the disk. Such micro-tidal disruption events (micro-TDEs) could be useful probe of stellar interaction with the AGN disk. We find that micro-TDEs in AGNs occur at a rate of $\sim170$ Gpc$^{-3}$yr$^{-1}$. Their cleanest observational probe may be the detection of tidal disruption in AGNs by heavy supermassive black holes ($M_{\bullet}\gtrsim10^{8}$ M$_{\odot}$) so that cannot tidally disrupt solar-type stars. As of today, we have directly detected exactly one source in both gravitational waves (GWs) and electromagnetic (EM) radiation, the binary neutron star merger GW170817, its associated gamma-ray burst GRB170817A, and the subsequent kilonova SSS17a/AT 2017gfo. Within ten years, we will detect hundreds of events, including new classes of events such as neutron-star-black-hole mergers, core-collapse supernovae, and almost certainly something completely unexpected. As we build this sample, we will explore exotic astrophysical topics ranging from nucleosynthesis, stellar evolution, general relativity, high-energy astrophysics, nuclear matter, to cosmology. The discovery potential is extraordinary, and investments in this area will yield major scientific breakthroughs. Here we outline some of the most exciting scientific questions that can be answered by combining GW and EM observations., submitted to Astro2020

We present the detection of persistent soft X-ray radiation with L_x ~ 10^41-10^42 erg/s at the location of the extremely luminous, double-humped transient ASASSN-15lh as revealed by Chandra and Swift. We interpret this finding in the context of observations from our multiwavelength campaign, which revealed the presence of weak narrow nebular emission features from the host-galaxy nucleus and clear differences with respect to superluminous supernova optical spectra. Significant UV flux variability on short time-scales detected at the time of the re-brightening disfavors the shock interaction scenario as the source of energy powering the long-lived UV emission, while deep radio limits exclude the presence of relativistic jets propagating into a low-density environment. We propose a model where the extreme luminosity and double-peaked temporal structure of ASASSN-15lh is powered by a central source of ionizing radiation that produces a sudden change of the ejecta opacity at later times. As a result, UV radiation can more easily escape, producing the second bump in the light-curve. We discuss different interpretations for the intrinsic nature of the ionizing source. We conclude that, IF the X-ray source is physically associated with the optical-UV transient, ASASSN-15lh most likely represents the tidal disruption of a main-sequence star by the most massive spinning black hole detected to date. In this case, ASASSN-15lh and similar events discovered in the future would constitute the most direct probes of very massive, dormant, spinning, supermassive black holes in galaxies. XTE J1810-197 is the first transient Anomalous X-ray Pulsar ever discovered. Its highly variable X-ray flux allowed us to study the timing and spectral emission properties of a magnetar candidate over a flux range of about two orders of magnitude. We analyzed nine XMM-Newton observations of XTE J1810-197 collected over a four years baseline (September 2003 - September 2007). EPIC PN and MOS data were reduced and used for detailed timing and spectral analysis. Pulse phase spectroscopic studies were also carried out for observations with sufficiently high signal to noise. We find that: (i) a three blackbodies model reproduces the spectral properties of the source over the entire outburst statistically better than the two blackbodies model previously used in the literature, (ii) the coldest blackbody is consistent with the thermal emission from the whole surface, and has temperature and radius similar to those inferred from ROSAT observations before the outburst onset, (iii) there is a spectral feature around 1.1 keV during six consecutive observations (since March 2005); if due to proton resonant cyclotron scattering, it would imply a magnetic field of around 2E14 G. GRB 050904 is the gamma-ray burst with the highest measured redshift. We performed time-resolved X-ray spectroscopy of the late GRB and early afterglow emission. We find robust evidence for a decrease with time of the soft X-ray-absorbing column. We model the evolution of the column density due to the flash ionization of the GRB and early afterglow photons. This allows us to constrain the metallicity and geometry of the absorbing cloud. We conclude that the progenitor of GRB 050904 was a massive star embedded in a dense metal-enriched molecular cloud with. This is the first local measurement of metallicity in the close environment Z greater than or similar to 0.03 Z(.). of a GRB and one of the highest redshift metallicity measurements. We also find that the dust associated with the cloud cannot be similar to that of our Galaxy but must be either sizably depleted or dominated by silicate grains. We discuss the implications of these results for GRB progenitors and high-redshift star formation.

We report on observations aimed at searching for flux variations from the proposed IR counterpart of the Anomalous X-ray Pulsar XTE J1810-197. These data, obtained in March 2004 with the adaptive optics camera NAOS-CONICA at the ESO VLT, show that the candidate proposed by Israel et al. (2004) was fainter by Delta H=0.7+/-0.2 and Delta Ks=0.5+/-0.1 with respect to October 2003, confirming it as the IR counterpart of XTE J1810-197. We also report on an XMM-Newton observation carried out the day before the VLT observations. The 0.5-10 keV absorbed flux of the source was 2.2x10^-11 erg/s/cm^2, which is less by a factor of about two compared to the previous XMM-Newton observation on September 2003. Therefore, we conclude that a similar flux decrease took place in the X-ray and IR bands. We have examined the complete set of X-ray afterglow observations of dark and optically bright gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) performed by BeppoSAX through 2001 February. X-ray afterglows are detected in ~90% of the cases. We do not find significant differences in the X-ray spectral shape, in particular no increased X-ray absorption in GRBs without optical transient (dark GRBs) compared to GRBs with optical transient (OTGRBs). Rather, we find that the 1.6-10 keV flux of OTGRBs is on average about 5 times larger than that of the dark GRBs. A Kolmogorov-Smirnov test shows that this difference is significant at 99.8% probability. Under the assumption that dark and OTGRBs have similar spectra, this could suggest that the first are uncaught in the optical band because they are just faint sources. In order to test this hypothesis, we have determined the optical-to-X-ray flux ratios of the sample. OTGRBs show a remarkably narrow distribution of flux ratios, which corresponds to an average optical-to-X-ray spectral index áOToX=0.794+/-0.054. We find that, while 75% of dark GRBs have flux ratio upper limits still consistent with those of OT GRBs, the remaining 25% are 4-10 times weaker in optical than in X-rays. The significance of this result is >=2.6 ó. If this subpopulation of dark GRBs were constituted by objects assimilable to OTGRBs, they should have shown optical fluxes higher than upper limits actually found. We discuss the possible causes of their behavior, including a possible occurrence in high-density clouds or origin at very high redshift and a connection with ancient, Population III stars

We present a pulsar-atmosphere (PA) model for modulated thermal X-ray emission from cooling magnetized neutron stars. The model synthesizes the spectral properties of detailed stellar atmosphere calculations with the non-uniform surface properties anticipated for isolated, aging radio pulsars, and general relativistic effects on photon trajectories. We analyze the archival Chandra observations of the middle-aged radio pulsar PSR 0656+14 with the PA model and find it is an excellent representation of the phase-averaged X-ray spectrum for a broad range of polar effective temperature T_p and column density N_H ~ 10^{20} cm^{-2}. The spectral fits favor a sub-solar neutron star mass M < 1.0 M_{\sun}, a large radius R=15-16 km for a source distance d ~ 190 pc, while retaining consistency with theoretical neutron star equations-of-state. The modulated spectrum constrains the angular displacement of the pulsar spin axis to 30 +/- 2 \arcdeg with respect to the line of sight., 21 pages, 7 figures

We present the spectral analysis of 14 gamma-ray bursts (GRB) X-ray afterglows in order to investigate the properties of interstellar matter (ISM) along the line of sight of GRB. We carried out a simultaneous analysis of the NIR-optical and X-band for those afterglows with an optical counterpart too, in order to evaluate and strongly constrain the absorption effect on the spectral energy distribution due to dust extinction from GRB environment. We evaluated the equivalent hydrogen column density Nh from X-ray spectroscopy and rest frame visual extinction Av by assuming different type of ISM composition and dust grain size distribution. From our analysis we obtained a distribution of the GRB rest frame consistent with the one expected if GRB were embedded in a Galactic-like molecular cloud. Moreover, values of the visual extinction estimated from the simultaneous analysis of NIR-to-X band favour an environment where small dust grain are destroyed by the interaction with the X-ray and UV photons from GRB.

The association of GRB170817A with GW170817 has confirmed the long-standing hypothesis that binary neutron star (BNS) mergers are the progenitors of at least some short gamma-ray bursts (SGRBs). This connection has ushered in an era in which broadband observations of SGRBs, together with measurements of the time delay between the gravitational waves and the electromagnetic radiation, allow to probe the properties of the emitting outflow and its engine to an unprecedented detail. Since the structure of the radiating outflow is molded by the interaction of a relativistic jet with the binary ejecta, it is of paramount importance to study the system in a realistic setting. Here we present a three-dimensional hydrodynamic simulation of a relativistic jet propagating in the ejecta of a BNS merger, which were computed with a general relativistic magnetohydrodynamic simulation. We find that the jet's centroid oscillates around the axis of the system, due to inhomogeneities encountered in the propagation. These oscillations allow the jet to find the path of least resistance and travel faster than an identical jet in smooth ejecta. In our setup the breakout time is ~0.6 sec, comparable to the expected central engine duration in SGRBs and possibly a non-negligible fraction of the total delay between the gravitational and gamma-ray signals. Our simulation also shows that energy is carried in roughly equal amounts by the jet and by the cocoon, and that about 20 per cent of the injected energy is transferred to the ejecta via mechanical work., Under review for publication in ApJL

We combine sophisticated high-precision scattering experiments, together with results from the Millenium-II simulation, to compute the cosmic merger rate of bound compact object (CO) binaries dynamically interacting with supermassive black hole binaries (SMBHBs). We consider binaries composed of white dwarfs (WDs), neutron stars (NSs), and black holes (BHs). The overall merger rates for WD–WD, NS–NS, BH–BH, BH–NS binaries, and EBBH (eccentric binaries of BHs) from redshift ∼5 are found to be $4.32\times 10^3\, \mathrm{yr}^{-1}(5.93\times 10^2\, \mathrm{yr}^{-1}$ for Type Ia SNe), $82.7\, \mathrm{yr}^{-1}$, $96.3\, \mathrm{yr}^{-1}$, $13.1\, \mathrm{yr}^{-1}$, and $148\, \mathrm{yr}^{-1}$, respectively, for a nominal CO binary fraction in the Galactic centre of 0.1. We calculate the distance (R) distribution of the merger sites with respect to the host galaxies of the binaries. The distribution shows a wide range of distances up to ∼Mpc; this tail is produced by escaped hypervelocity CO binaries. Due to the differences in the matter density of the surrounding environment, merger events with different R are expected to display significantly different signatures in their EM counterparts. In particular, merger events (and especially NS–NS) producing a relativistic jet but occurring in the intergalactic medium will have very weak afterglow radiation relative to their prompt emission. These events, which we call ‘off-centre’, can only be produced from a close encounter between CO binaries and SMBHBs; hence the detection of such merger events would indicate the existence of nearby SMBHBs, and in particular with high mass ratio, produced in the aftermath of a major galaxy merger.

Hypervelocity binaries (HVBs) can be produced by a close encounter between stellar binaries and supermassive black hole (SMBH)-intermediate massive black hole (IMBH) binaries. We perform scattering experiments between tight stellar binaries and an SMBH-IMBH binary (within the observationally allowed parameters), using high-precision N-body integrations. Simulation results show that only a few HVBs can be produced in the Galactic center if it harbors a $4\times10^3M_\odot$ IMBH. However, we find that tight HVBs can be efficiently produced in prograde coplanar orbits with respect to the SMBH-IMBH binary. Therefore, the trajectories of the HVBs provide a promising way to constrain the IMBH orbital plane, if one exists. More importantly, we find that the ejected tight binaries are eccentric. For other galaxies hosting equal-mass SMBH binaries for which the HVB ejection rate is much higher relative to SMBH-IMBH binaries, these ejected compact binaries constitute promising extragalactic merger sources that could be detected by gravitational wave detectors.

The binary neutron star (BNS) merger GW170817 was the first astrophysical source detected in gravitational waves and multi-wavelength electromagnetic radiation. The almost simultaneous observation of a pulse of gamma-rays proved that BNS mergers are associated with at least some short gamma-ray bursts (GRBs). However, the gamma-ray pulse was faint, casting doubts on the association of BNS mergers with the luminous, highly relativistic outflows of canonical short GRBs. Here we show that structured jets with a relativistic, energetic core surrounded by slower and less energetic wings produce afterglow emission that brightens characteristically with time, as recently seen in the afterglow of GW170817. Initially, we only see the relatively slow material moving towards us. As time passes, larger and larger sections of the outflow become visible, increasing the luminosity of the afterglow. The late appearance and increasing brightness of the multi-wavelength afterglow of GW170817 allow us to constrain the geometry of its ejecta and thus reveal the presence of an off-axis jet pointing about 30 degrees away from Earth. Our results confirm a single origin for BNS mergers and short GRBs: GW170817 produced a structured outflow with a highly relativistic core and a canonical short GRB. We did not see the bright burst because it was beamed away from Earth. However, approximately one in 20 mergers detected in gravitational waves will be accompanied by a bright, canonical short GRB., Models updated with new data and added references. Merging binary neutron stars (BNSs) represent the ultimate targets for multimessenger astronomy, being among the most promising sources of gravitational waves (GWs), and, at the same time, likely accompanied by a variety of electromagnetic counterparts across the entire spectrum, possibly including short gamma-ray bursts (SGRBs) and kilonova/macronova transients. Numerical relativity simulations play a central role in the study of these events. In particular, given the importance of magnetic fields, various aspects of this investigation require general relativistic magnetohydrodynamics (GRMHD). So far, most GRMHD simulations focused the attention on BNS mergers leading to the formation of a hypermassive NS, which, in turn, collapses within few tens of ms into a black hole surrounded by an accretion disk. However, recent observations suggest that a significant fraction of these systems could form a long-lived NS remnant, which will either collapse on much longer timescales or remain indefinitely stable. Despite the profound implications for the evolution and the emission properties of the system, a detailed investigation of this alternative evolution channel is still missing. Here, we follow this direction and present a first detailed GRMHD study of BNS mergers forming a long-lived NS. We consider magnetized binaries with different mass ratios and equations of state and analyze the structure of the NS remnants, the rotation profiles, the accretion disks, the evolution and amplification of magnetic fields, and the ejection of matter. Moreover, we discuss the connection with the central engine of SGRBs and provide order-of-magnitude estimates for the kilonova/macronova signal. Short Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs) are explosions of cosmic origin believed to be associated with the merger of two compact objects, either two neutron stars, or a neutron star and a black hole. The presence of at least one neutron star has long been thought to be an essential element of the model: its tidal disruption provides the needed baryonic material whose rapid accretion onto the post-merger black hole powers the burst. The recent tentative detection by the Fermi satellite of a short GRB in association with the gravitational wave signal GW150914 produced by the merger of two black holes has challenged this standard paradigm. Here we show that the evolution of two high-mass, low-metallicity stars with main sequence rotational speeds a few tens of percent of the critical speed eventually undergoing a weak supernova explosion {\em can} produce a short gamma-ray burst. The outer layers of the envelope of the last exploding star remain bound and circularize at large radii. With time, the disk cools and becomes neutral, suppressing the magneto-rotational instability, and hence the viscosity. The disk remains 'long-lived dead' until tidal torques and shocks during the pre-merger phase heat it up and re-ignite accretion, rapidly consuming the disk and powering the short gamma-ray burst., Matches version accepted to ApJL

We present fully GRMHD simulations of the merger of binary neutron star (BNS) systems. We consider BNSs producing a hypermassive neutron star (HMNS) that collapses to a spinning black hole (BH) surrounded by a magnetized accretion disk in a few tens of ms. We investigate whether such systems may launch relativistic jets and power short gamma-ray bursts. We study the effects of different equations of state (EOSs), different mass ratios, and different magnetic field orientations. For all cases, we present a detailed investigation of the matter dynamics and of the magnetic field evolution, with particular attention to its global structure and possible emission of relativistic jets. The main result of this work is that we found the formation of an organized magnetic field structure. This happens independently of EOS, mass ratio, and initial magnetic field orientation. We also show that those models that produce a longer-lived HMNS lead to a stronger magnetic field before collapse to BH. Such larger fields make it possible, for at least one of our models, to resolve the MRI and hence further amplify the magnetic field. However, by the end of our simulations, we do not observe a magnetically dominated funnel and hence neither a relativistic outflow. With respect to the recent simulations of Ruiz et al 2016, we evolve models with lower and more realistic initial magnetic field strengths and, because of computational reasons, we do not evolve the accretion disk for the long timescales that seem to be required in order to see a relativistic outflow. Since all our models produce a similar ordered magnetic field structure, we expect that the results found in Ruiz et al 2016, where they only considered an equal-mass system with an ideal fluid EOS, should be general and, at least from a qualitative point of view, independent from mass-ratio, magnetic field orientation, and EOS., Comment: 23 pages, 26 figures. The merger of binary neutron stars (BNSs) can lead to large amplifications of the magnetic field due to the development of turbulence and instabilities in the fluid, such as the Kelvin-Helmholtz shear instability, which drive small-scale dynamo activity. In order to properly resolve such instabilities and obtain the correct magnetic field amplification, one would need to employ resolutions that are currently unfeasible in global general relativistic magnetohydrodynamic (GRMHD) simulations of BNS mergers. Here, we present a subgrid model that allows global simulations to take into account the small-scale amplification of the magnetic field which is caused by the development of turbulence during BNS mergers. Assuming dynamo saturation, we show that magnetar-level fields ($\sim 10^{16}\,{\rm G}$) can be easily reached, and should therefore be expected from the merger of magnetized BNSs. The total magnetic energy can reach values up to $\sim 10^{51}\,{\rm erg}$ and the post-merger remnant can therefore emit strong electromagnetic signals and possibly produce short gamma-ray bursts., 5 pages, 4 figures, small changes in the text to match version published on ApJ

Binary neutron star (NS) mergers are among the most promising sources of gravitational waves (GWs), as well as candidate progenitors for short Gamma-Ray Bursts (SGRBs). Depending on the total initial mass of the system, and the NS equation of state (EOS), the post-merger phase can see a prompt collapse to a black hole, or the formation of a supramassive NS, or even a stable NS. In the case of post-merger NS (PMNS) formation, magnetic field amplification during the merger will produce a magnetar with a large induced mass quadrupole moment, and millisecond spin. If the timescale for orthogonalization of the magnetic symmetry axis with the spin axis is sufficiently short the NS will radiate its spin down energy primarily via GWs. Here we study this scenario for various outcomes of NS formation: we generalise the set of equilibrium states for a twisted torus magnetic configuration to include solutions that, at a fixed exterior dipole field, carry a larger magnetic energy reservoir; we hence compute their magnetic ellipticity and the strength of the expected GW signal as a function of the magnitude of the dipole and toroidal field. The relative number of GW detections from PMNSs and from binary NSs is a strong function of the NS equation of state (EOS), being higher (~ 1%) for the stiffest EOSs and negligibly small for the softest ones. For intermediate-stiffness EOSs, such as the n=4/7 polytrope recently used by Giacomazzo \& Perna or the GM1 used by Lasky et al., the relative fraction is ~0.3%; correspondingly we estimate a GW detection rate from stable PMNSs of ~ (0.1-1) yr$^{-1}$ with Advanced detectors, and of ~ (100-1000) yr$^{-1}$ with third generation detectors such as the Einstein Telescope. Measurement of such GW signal would provide strong constraints on the NS EOS and on the nature of the binary progenitors giving rise to SGRBs., 10 pages, 6 figures, submitted to Ap.J

Following merger, a neutron star (NS) binary can produce roughly one of three different outcomes: (1) a stable NS, (2) a black hole (BH), or (3) a supra-massive, rotationally-supported NS, which then collapses to a BH following angular momentum losses. Which of these fates occur and in what proportion has important implications for the electromagnetic transient associated with the mergers and the expected gravitational wave signatures, which in turn depend on the high density equation of state (EOS). Here we combine relativistic calculations of NS masses using realistic EOSs with Monte Carlo population synthesis based on the mass distribution of NS binaries in our Galaxy to predict the distribution of fates expected. For many EOSs, a significant fraction of the remnants are NSs or supra-massive NSs. This lends support to scenarios where a quickly spinning, highly magnetized NS may be powering an electromagnetic transient. This also indicates that it will be important for future gravitational wave (GW) observatories to focus on high frequencies to study the post merger GW emission. Even in cases where individual GW events are too low in signal to noise to study the post merger signature in detail, the statistics of how many mergers produce NSs versus BHs can be compared with our work to constrain the EOS. To match short gamma-ray burst (SGRB) X-ray afterglow statistics, we find that the stiffest EOSs are ruled out. Structures in Warm Dark Matter (WDM) models are exponentially suppressed below a certain scale, characterized by the dark matter particle mass, $m_{\rm x}$. Since structures form hierarchically, the presence of collapsed objects at high-redshifts can set strong lower limits on $m_{\rm x}$. We place robust constraints on $m_{\rm x}$ using recent results from the {\it Swift} database of high-redshift gamma-ray bursts (GRBs). We parameterize the redshift evolution of the ratio between the cosmic GRB rate and star formation rate (SFR) as $\propto (1+z)^\alpha$, thereby allowing astrophysical uncertainties to partially mimic the cosmological suppression of structures in WDM models. Using a maximum likelihood estimator on two different $z>4$ GRB subsamples (including two bursts at $z>8$), we constrain $m_{\rm x} \gtrsim 1.6$-1.8 keV at 95% C.L., when marginalized over a flat prior in $\alpha$. We further estimate that 5 years of a SVOM-like mission would tighten these constraints to $m_{\rm x} \gtrsim 2.3 $ keV. In recent years, detailed observations and accurate numerical simulations have provided support to the idea that mergers of compact binaries containing either two neutron stars (NSs) or an NS and a black hole (BH) may constitute the central engine of short gamma-ray bursts (SGRBs). The merger of such compact binaries is expected to lead to the production of a spinning BH surrounded by an accreting torus. Several mechanisms can extract energy from this system and power the SGRBs. Here we connect observations and numerical simulations of compact binary mergers, and use the current sample of SGRBs with measured energies to constrain the mass of their powering tori. By comparing the masses of the tori with the results of fully general-relativistic simulations, we are able to infer the properties of the binary progenitors which yield SGRBs. By assuming a constant efficiency in converting torus mass into jet energy, epsilon_{jet}=10%, we find that most of the tori have masses smaller than 0.01M_{sun}, favoring "high-mass" binary NSs mergers, i.e., binaries with total masses >~1.5 the maximum mass of an isolated NS. This has important consequences for the gravitational-wave signals that may be detected in association with SGRBs, since "high-mass" systems do not form a long-lived hypermassive NS after the merger. While NS-BH systems cannot be excluded to be the engine of at least some of the SGRBs, the BH would need to have an initial spin of ~0.9, or higher., 6 pages, 3 figures. Cosmological models that include suppression of the power spectrum of density fluctuations on small scales exhibit an exponential reduction of high-redshift, non-linear structures, including a reduction in the rate of gamma ray bursts (GRBs). Here we quantify the constraints that the detection of distant GRBs would place on structure formation models with reduced small-scale power. We compute the number of GRBs that could be detectable by the Swift satellite at high redshifts (z > 6), assuming that the GRBs trace the cosmic star formation history, which itself traces the formation of non-linear structures. We calibrate simple models of the intrinsic luminosity function of the bursts to the number and flux distribution of GRBs observed by the Burst And Transient Source Experiment (BATSE). We find that a discovery of high-z GRBs would imply strong constraints on models with reduced small-scale power. For example, a single GRB at z > 10, or 10 GRBs at z > 5, discovered by Swift during its scheduled two-year mission, would rule out an exponential suppression of the power spectrum on scales below R_c=0.09 Mpc (exemplified by warm dark matter models with a particle mass of m_x=2 keV). Models with a less sharp suppression of small-scale power, such as those with a red tilt or a running scalar index, n_s, are more difficult to constrain, because they are more degenerate with an increase in the power spectrum normalization, sigma_8, and with models in which star-formation is allowed in low-mass minihalos. We find that a tilt of ��n_s ~ 0.1 is difficult to detect; however, an observed rate of 1 GRB/yr at z > 12 would yield an upper limit on the running of the spectral index, alpha = d(n_s)/d(ln k) > -0.05., 10 pages, 6 figures; Minor changes to match version published in ApJ

Neutron stars (NSs) in the astrophysical universe are often surrounded by accretion disks. Accretion of matter onto an NS may increase its mass above the maximum value allowed by its equation of state, inducing its collapse to a black hole (BH). Here we study this process for the first time, in three-dimensions, and in full general relativity. By considering three initial NS configurations, each with and without a surrounding disk (of mass ~7% M_{NS}), we investigate the effect of the accretion disk on the dynamics of the collapse and its imprint on both the gravitational wave (GW) and electromagnetic (EM) signals that can be emitted by these sources. We show in particular that, even if the GW signal is similar for the accretion induced collapse (AIC) and the collapse of an NS in vacuum (and detectable only for Galactic sources), the EM counterpart could allow us to discriminate between these two types of events. In fact, our simulations show that, while the collapse of an NS in vacuum leaves no appreciable baryonic matter outside the event horizon, an AIC is followed by a phase of rapid accretion of the surviving disk onto the newly formed BH. The post-collapse accretion rates, on the order of ~10^{-2} M_{sun} s^{-1}, make these events tantalizing candidates as engines of short gamma-ray bursts., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures.
