We present the expected observational properties of a general relativistic instability supernova (GRSN) from the 55,500 Msun primordial (Population III) star. Supermassive stars exceeding 1e4 Msun may exist in the early Universe. They are generally considered to collapse through the general relativistic instability to be seed black holes to form supermassive (~ 1e9 Msun) black holes observed as high-redshift quasars. Some of them, however, may explode as GRSNe if the explosive helium burning unbinds the supermassive stars following the collapse triggered by the general relativistic instability. We perform the radiation hydrodynamics simulation of the GRSN starting shortly before the shock breakout. We find that the GRSN is characterized by a long-lasting (550 d) luminous (1.5e44 erg/s) plateau phase with the photospheric temperature of around 5000 K in the rest frame. The plateau phase lasts for decades when it appears at high redshifts and it will likely be observed as a persistent source in the future deep near-infrared imaging surveys. Especially, the near-infrared images reaching 29 AB magnitude that can be obtained by Galaxy and Reionization EXplorer (G-REX) and James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) allow us to identify GRSNe up to z ~ 15. Deeper images enable us to discover GRSNe at even higher redshifts. Having extremely red color, they can be distinguished from other persistent sources such as high-redshift galaxies by using color information. Multicolor photometric observations in the optical band and a comprehensive study in the X-ray, gamma-ray, and radio bands are presented for GRB 181201A and its afterglow. The optical observations began $${\sim}0.5$$ day after the burst and lasted almost continuously for $${\sim}24$$ days. They were resumed after eight months, which allowed us to determine the contribution of the host galaxy to the measured fluxes and to estimate the related extinction. Such complete coverage of the light curve became possible owing to the coordinated work of a network of nine telescopes worldwide. Convincing evidence of an incipient supernova explosion at the location of the burst source was obtained at the end of the first series of observations. Thus, GRB 181201A became yet another event that confirmed the association of gamma-ray bursts with supernovae. Thirty such events based on photometric observations of burst afterglows were known before it. A comparison of the supernova-induced excess emission in the light curve of the afterglow from GRB 181201A with other events has allowed some of the supernova parameters to be determined.

Population (Pop) III stars, first stars, or metal-free stars are made of primordial gas. We have examined if they can be dominant origins of merging binary black holes (BHs) and extremely metal-poor stars. The abundance pattern of EMP stars is helpful to trace back the properties of Pop III stars. We have confirmed previous arguments that the observed BH merger rate needs Pop III star formation efficiency 10 times larger than theoretically predicted values, while the cosmic reionization history still permits such a high Pop III star formation efficiency. On the other hand, we have newly found that the elemental abundance pattern of EMP stars only allows the Pop III initial mass function with the minimum mass of $\sim 15 - 27$ $M_\odot$. In other words, the minimum mass must not deviate largely from the critical mass below and above which Pop III stars leave behind neutron stars and BHs, respectively. We infer the expected detection number of pair instability supernovae (PISNe) during the operation of the Euclid space telescope based on binary population models. Our models reproduce the global maximum of the rate at the primary BH mass of $\sim 9-10$ $M_\odot$, and the overall gradient of the primary BH mass distribution in the binary BH merger rate consistent with recent observations. We consider different PISN conditions depending on the $^{12}$C$(\alpha, \gamma)^{16}$O reaction rate. The fiducial and $3\sigma$ models adopt the standard and $3\sigma$-smaller reaction rate, respectively. Our fiducial model predicts that Euclid detects several hydrogen-poor PISNe. For the $3\sigma$ model, detection of $\sim 1$ hydrogen-poor PISN by Euclid is expected if the stellar mass distribution extends to $M_{\max} = 600 M_\odot$, but the expected number becomes significantly smaller if $M_{\max} = 300 M_\odot$. We may be able to distinguish the fiducial and $3\sigma$ models by the observed PISN rate. This will help us to constrain the origin of binary BHs and the reaction rate, although there remains degeneracy between $M_{\max}$ and the reaction rate. Recent observations of active galactic nuclei (AGNs) have shown a high Fe~II/Mg~II line-flux ratio in their broad-line regions, nearly independent of redshift up to $z \gtrsim 6$. The high flux ratio requires rapid production of iron in galactic nuclei to reach an abundance ratio of ${\rm [Fe/Mg]} \gtrsim 0.2$ as high as those observed in matured galaxies in the local universe. We propose a possible explanation of rapid iron enrichment in AGNs by massive star formation that follows a top-heavy initial mass function (IMF) with a power-law index of $\Gamma$ larger than the canonical value of $\Gamma=-2.35$ for a Salpeter IMF. Taking into account metal production channels from different types of SNe, we find that the high value of ${\rm [Fe/Mg]} \gtrsim 0.2$ requires the IMF to be characterized with $\Gamma \gtrsim -1$ ($\Gamma \gtrsim 0$) and a high-mass cutoff at $M_{\rm max} \simeq 100$--$150~{\rm M_\odot}$ $(M_{\rm max} \gtrsim 250~{\rm M_\odot})$. Given the conditions, core-collapse SNe with $M_\ast \gtrsim 70~{\rm M_\odot}$ and pair-instability SNe give a major contribution for iron enrichment. Such top-heavy stellar IMFs would be a natural consequence from mass growth of stars formed in dense AGN disks under Bondi-like gas accretion that is regulated by feedback at $M_\ast \gtrsim 10~{\rm M_\odot}$. The massive stellar population formed in AGN disks also leave stellar-mass black hole remnants, whose mergers associated with gravitational-wave emission account for at most 10 \% of the merger rate inferred from LIGO/Virgo observations to simultaneously explain the high ${\rm [Fe/Mg]}$ ratio with metal ejection., Comment: 9 pages, 5 figures, submitted to MNRAS

In the transitional mass range (~8–10 solar masses) between white dwarf formation and iron core-collapse supernovae, stars are expected to produce an electron-capture supernova. Theoretically, these progenitors are thought to be super-asymptotic giant branch stars with a degenerate O + Ne + Mg core, and electron capture onto Ne and Mg nuclei should initiate core collapse1–4. However, no supernovae have unequivocally been identified from an electron-capture origin, partly because of uncertainty in theoretical predictions. Here we present six indicators of electron-capture supernovae and show that supernova 2018zd is the only known supernova with strong evidence for or consistent with all six: progenitor identification, circumstellar material, chemical composition5–7, explosion energy, light curve and nucleosynthesis8–12. For supernova 2018zd, we infer a super-asymptotic giant branch progenitor based on the faint candidate in the pre-explosion images and the chemically enriched circumstellar material revealed by the early ultraviolet colours and flash spectroscopy. The light-curve morphology and nebular emission lines can be explained by the low explosion energy and neutron-rich nucleosynthesis produced in an electron-capture supernova. This identification provides insights into the complex stellar evolution, supernova physics, cosmic nucleosynthesis and remnant populations in the transitional mass range. Electron-capture supernovae are thought to come from progenitors with a narrow range of masses, and thus they are rare. 9 pags., 5 figs., 3 tabs., In this Letter, we report the discovery of an ultraluminous fast-evolving transient in rest-frame UV wavelengths, MUSSES2020J, soon after its occurrence by using the Hyper Suprime-Cam (HSC) mounted on the 8.2 m Subaru telescope. The rise time of about 5 days with an extremely high UV peak luminosity shares similarities to a handful of fast blue optical transients whose peak luminosities are comparable with the most luminous supernovae while their timescales are significantly shorter (hereafter "fast blue ultraluminous transient,"FBUT). In addition, MUSSES2020J is located near the center of a normal low-mass galaxy at a redshift of 1.063, suggesting a possible connection between the energy source of MUSSES2020J and the central part of the host galaxy. Possible physical mechanisms powering this extreme transient such as a wind-driven tidal disruption event and an interaction between supernova and circumstellar material are qualitatively discussed based on the first multiband early-phase light curve of FBUTs, although whether the scenarios can quantitatively explain the early photometric behavior of MUSSES2020J requires systematical theoretical investigations. The detections of gravitational waves (GW) by the LIGO/Virgo collaborations provide various possibilities for both physics and astronomy. We are quite sure that GW observations will develop a lot, both in precision and in number, thanks to the continuous work on the improvement of detectors, including the expected new detector, KAGRA, and the planned detector, LIGO-India. On this occasion, we review the fundamental outcomes and prospects of gravitational wave physics and astronomy. We survey the development, focusing on representative sources of gravitational waves: binary black holes, binary neutron stars, and supernovae. We also summarize the role of gravitational wave observations as a probe of new physics.

We conduct 24.4~fps optical observations of repeating Fast Radio Burst (FRB) 20190520B using Tomo-e Gozen, a high-speed CMOS camera mounted on the Kiso 105-cm Schmidt telescope, simultaneously with radio observations carried out using the Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical radio Telescope (FAST). We succeeded in the simultaneous optical observations of 11 radio bursts that FAST detected. However, no corresponding optical emission was found. The optical fluence limits as deep as 0.068 Jy ms are obtained for the individual bursts (0.029 Jy ms on the stacked data) corrected for the dust extinction in the Milky Way. The fluence limit is deeper than those obtained in the previous simultaneous observations for an optical emission with a duration $\gtrsim 0.1$ ms. Although the current limits on radio--optical spectral energy distribution (SED) of FRBs are not constraining, we show that SED models based on observed SEDs of radio variable objects such as optically detected pulsars, and a part of parameter spaces of theoretical models in which FRB optical emission is produced by inverse-Compton scattering in a pulsar magnetosphere or a strike of a magnetar blastwave into a hot wind bubble, can be ruled out once a similar fluence limit as in our observation is obtained for a bright FRB with a radio fluence $\gtrsim 5$ Jy ms., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ, metadata corrected

Stellar and supernova nucleosynthesis in the first few billion years of the cosmic history have set the scene for early structure formation in the Universe, while little is known about their nature. Making use of stellar physical parameters measured by GALAH Data Release 3 with accurate astrometry from the Gaia EDR3, we have selected $\sim 100$ old main-sequence turn-off stars (ages $\gtrsim 12$ Gyrs) with kinematics compatible with the Milky Way stellar halo population in the Solar neighborhood. Detailed homogeneous elemental abundance estimates by GALAH DR3 are compared with supernova yield models of Pop~III (zero-metal) core-collapse supernovae (CCSNe), normal (non-zero-metal) CCSNe, and Type Ia supernovae (SN Ia) to examine which of the individual yields or their combinations best reproduce the observed elemental abundance patterns for each of the old halo stars ("OHS"). We find that the observed abundances in the OHS with [Fe/H]$>-1.5$ are best explained by contributions from both CCSNe and SN~Ia, where the fraction of SN~Ia among all the metal-enriching SNe is up to 10-20 % for stars with high [Mg/Fe] ratios and up to 20-27 % for stars with low [Mg/Fe] ratios, depending on the assumption about the relative fraction of near-Chandrasekhar-mass SNe Ia progenitors. The results suggest that, in the progenitor systems of the OHS with [Fe/H]$>-1.5$, $\sim$ 50-60% of Fe mass originated from normal CCSNe at the earliest phases of the Milky Way formation. Some metal-poor stars have abundance patterns which are midway between the slow (s) and rapid (r) neutron capture processes. We show that the helium shell of a fast rotating massive star experiencing a jet-like explosion undergoes two efficient neutron capture processes: one during stellar evolution and one during the explosion. It eventually provides a material whose chemical composition is midway between the s- and r-process. A low metallicity 40~$M_{\odot}$ model with an initial rotational velocity of $\sim 700$~km~s$^{-1}$ was computed from birth to pre-supernova with a nuclear network following the slow neutron capture process. A 2D hydrodynamic relativistic code was used to model a $E = 10^{52}$~erg relativistic jet-like explosion hitting the stellar mantle. The jet-induced nucleosynthesis was calculated in post-processing with a network of 1812 nuclei. During the star's life, heavy elements from $30 \lesssim Z \lesssim 82$ are produced thanks to an efficient s-process, which is boosted by rotation. At the end of evolution, the helium shell is largely enriched in trans-iron elements and in (unburnt) $^{22}$Ne, whose abundance is $\sim 20$ times higher than in a non-rotating model. During the explosion, the jet heats the helium shell up to $\sim 1.5$ GK. It efficiently activates ($\alpha,n$) reactions, such as $^{22}$Ne($\alpha,n$), and leads to a strong n-process with neutron densities of $\sim 10^{19} - 10^{20}$~cm$^{-3}$ during $0.1$~second. This has the effect of shifting the s-process pattern towards heavier elements (e.g. Eu). The resulting chemical pattern is consistent with the abundances of the carbon-enhanced metal-poor r/s star CS29528-028, provided the ejecta of the jet model is not homogeneously mixed. Wide-field optical surveys have begun to uncover large samples of fast (t_rise < 5d), luminous (M_peak < -18), blue transients. While commonly attributed to the breakout of a supernova shock into a dense wind, the great distances to the transients of this class found so far have hampered detailed investigation of their properties. We present photometry and spectroscopy from a comprehensive worldwide campaign to observe AT2018cow (ATLAS18qqn), the first fast-luminous optical transient to be found in real time at low redshift. Our first spectra (10 days. The spectrum remains extremely hot throughout its evolution, and the photospheric radius contracts with time (receding below R, Corrected Figure 8 / Table 4 to use final fits. We present optical and near-infrared observations of the nearby Type Iax supernova (SN) 2014dt from 14 to 410 days after the maximum light. The velocities of the iron absorption lines in the early phase indicated that SN 2014dt showed slower expansion than the well-observed Type Iax SNe 2002cx, 2005hk and 2012Z. In the late phase, the evolution of the light curve and that of the spectra were considerably slower. The spectral energy distribution kept roughly the same shape after ~100 days, and the bolometric light curve flattened during the same period. These observations suggest the existence of an optically thick component that almost fully trapped the {\gamma}-ray energy from 56 Co decay. These findings are consistent with the predictions of the weak deflagration model, leaving a bound white dwarf remnant after the explosion., Comment: 39 pages, 14 figures, accepted for publication in PASJ

In recent years, millisecond-duration radio signals originating in distant galaxies appear to have been discovered in the so-called fast radio bursts. These signals are dispersed according to a precise physical law and this dispersion is a key observable quantity, which, in tandem with a redshift measurement, can be used for fundamental physical investigations. Every fast radio burst has a dispersion measurement, but none before now have had a redshift measurement, because of the difficulty in pinpointing their celestial coordinates. Here we report the discovery of a fast radio burst and the identification of a fading radio transient lasting ~6 days after the event, which we use to identify the host galaxy; we measure the galaxy’s redshift to be z = 0.492 ± 0.008. The dispersion measure and redshift, in combination, provide a direct measurement of the cosmic density of ionized baryons in the intergalactic medium of ΩIGM = 4.9 ± 1.3 per cent, in agreement with the expectation from the Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe, and including all of the so-called ‘missing baryons’. The ~6-day radio transient is largely consistent with the radio afterglow of a short γ-ray burst, and its existence and timescale do not support progenitor models such as giant pulses from pulsars, and supernovae. This contrasts with the interpretation of another recently discovered fast radio burst, suggesting that there are at least two classes of bursts.

Rapidly evolving transients form a new class of transients which show shorter timescales of the light curves than those of typical core-collapse and thermonuclear supernovae. We performed a systematic search for rapidly evolving transients using the deep data taken with the Hyper Suprime-Cam Subaru Strategic Program Transient Survey. By measuring the timescales of the light curves of 1824 transients, we identified 5 rapidly evolving transients. Our samples are found in a wide range of redshifts (0.3 $\le$ z $\le$ 1.5) and peak absolute magnitudes ($-$17 $\ge$ $M_i$ $\ge$ $-$20). The properties of the light curves are similar to those of the previously discovered rapidly evolving transients. They show a relatively blue spectral energy distribution, with the best-fit blackbody of 8,000 - 18,000 K. We show that some of the transients require power sources other than the radioactive decays of $^{56}$Ni because of their high peak luminosities and short timescales. The host galaxies of all the samples are star-forming galaxies, suggesting a massive star origin for the rapidly evolving transients. The event rate is roughly estimated to be $\sim$4,000 events yr$^{-1}$ Gpc$^{-3}$, which is about 1 $\%$ of core-collapse supernovae., 19 pages, 13 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

We have searched for optical variability in the host galaxy of the radio variable source which is possibly associated with fast radio burst (FRB) 150418. We compare images of the galaxy taken 1 day after the burst using Subaru/Suprime-Cam with images taken $\sim$ 1 year after the burst using Gemini-South/GMOS. No optical variability is found between the two epochs with a limiting absolute magnitude $\gtrsim -19$ (AB). This limit applies to optical variability of the putative active galactic nucleus in the galaxy on a timescale of $\sim$ 1 year, and also to the luminosity of an optical counterpart of FRB~150418 one day after the burst should it have occurred in this galaxy., 5 pages, 3 figures, 1 Table, accepted for publication in PASJ Letters

A pulsar wind is a relativistic outflow dominated by Poynting energy at its base. Based on the standard ideal magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) model of pulsar wind nebulae (PWNe) with the ordered magnetic field, the observed slow expansion $v_{\rm PWN} \ll c$ requires the wind to be dominated by kinetic energy at the upstream of its termination shock, which conflicts with the pulsar wind theory ($\sigma$-problem). In this paper, we extend the standard model of PWNe by phenomenologically taking into account conversion of the ordered to turbulent magnetic field and dissipation of the turbulent magnetic field. Disordering of the magnetic structure is inferred from the recent three-dimensional relativistic ideal MHD simulations, while magnetic dissipation is a non-ideal MHD effect requiring a finite resistivity. We apply this model to the Crab Nebula and find that the conversion effect is important for the flow deceleration, while the dissipation effect is not. Even for Poynting-dominated pulsar wind, we obtain the Crab Nebula's $v_{\rm PWN}$ by adopting a finite conversion time-scale of $\sim 0.3$ yr. Magnetic dissipation primarily affects the synchrotron radiation properties. Any values of the pulsar wind magnetization $\sigma_{\rm w}$ are allowed within the present model of the PWN dynamics alone, and even a small termination shock radius of $\ll 0.1$ pc reproduces the observed dynamical features of the Crab Nebula. Low-mass population III (PopIII) stars could survive up until the present. They would be found in the halo of Our Galaxy, if they exist. Non-detection of low-mass PopIII stars in our Galaxy suggests that PopIII stars have a top-heavy IMF. On the other hand, some claims that the lack of such stars is as a result of metal enrichment of their surface by accretion of heavy elements from interstellar medium (ISM). We investigate effects of the stellar wind on the metal accretion onto low-mass PopIII stars because accretion of the local ISM onto the Sun is prevented by the solar wind even for neutrals. We find that low-mass PopIII stars traveling across the Galaxy forms the stellar magnetosphere in most of their life. Once the magnetosphere is formed, most of neutral interstellar particles are photoionized before reaching to the stellar surface and are blown away by the wind. This demonstrates that low-mass PopIII stars remain pristine and will be found as metal free stars and that further searches for them are valuable to constrain the IMF of PopIII stars.

Ji-An Jiang et al. -- 16 pags., 4+6 figs., 2 tabs., Type Ia supernovae arise from the thermonuclear explosion of white-dwarf stars that have cores of carbon and oxygen. The uniformity of their light curves makes these supernovae powerful cosmological distance indicators, but there have long been debates about exactly how their explosion is triggered and what kind of companion stars are involved. For example, the recent detection of the early ultraviolet pulse of a peculiar, subluminous type Ia supernova has been claimed as evidence for an interaction between a red-giant or a main-sequence companion and ejecta from a white-dwarf explosion. Here we report observations of a prominent but red optical flash that appears about half a day after the explosion of a type Ia supernova. This supernova shows hybrid features of different supernova subclasses, namely a light curve that is typical of normal-brightness supernovae, but with strong titanium absorption, which is commonly seen in the spectra of subluminous ones. We argue that this early flash does not occur through previously suggested mechanisms such as the companion¿ejecta interaction. Instead, our simulations show that it could occur through detonation of a thin helium shell either on a near-Chandrasekhar-mass white dwarf, or on a sub-Chandrasekhar-mass white dwarf merging with a less-massive white dwarf. $^{56}$Ni is an important indicator of the supernova explosions, which characterizes light curves. Nevertheless, rather than $^{56}$Ni, the explosion energy has often been paid attention from the explosion mechanism community, since it is easier to estimate from numerical data than the amount of $^{56}$Ni. The final explosion energy, however, is difficult to estimate by detailed numerical simulations because current simulations cannot reach typical timescale of saturation of explosion energy. Instead, the amount of $^{56}$Ni converges within a short timescale so that it would be a better probe of the explosion mechanism. We investigated the amount of $^{56}$Ni synthesized by explosive nucleosynthesis in supernova ejecta by means of numerical simulations and an analytic model. For numerical simulations, we employ Lagrangian hydrodynamics code in which neutrino heating and cooling terms are taken into account by light-bulb approximation. Initial conditions are taken from Woosley & Hegel (2007), which have 12, 15, 20, and 25 $M_\odot$ in zero age main sequence. We additionally develop an analytic model, which gives a reasonable estimate of the amount of $^{56}$Ni. We found that, in order to produce enough amount of $^{56}$Ni, $\mathcal{O}(1)$ Bethe s$^{-1}$ of growth rate of the explosion energy is needed, which is much larger than that found in recent exploding simulations, typically $\mathcal{O}(0.1)$ Bethe s$^{-1}$., 11 pages, 7 figures, 3 tables

We report on the detection of a remarkable new fast high-energy transient found in the Chandra Deep Field-South, robustly associated with a faint (mR = 27.5 mag, zph ∼ 2.2) host in the CANDELS survey. The X-ray event is comprised of 115(+12)(−11) net 0.3–7.0 keV counts, with a light curve characterized by an ≈100 s rise time, a peak 0.3–10 keV flux of ≈5 × 10(−12) erg s(−1) cm(−2) and a power-law decay time slope of −1.53 ± 0.27. The average spectral slope is Γ=1.43(+0.23)(−0.13), with no clear spectral variations. The X-ray and multiwavelength properties effectively rule out the vast majority of previously observed high-energy transients. A few theoretical possibilities remain: an ‘orphan’ X-ray afterglow from an off-axis short-duration gamma-ray burst (GRB) with weak optical emission, a low-luminosity GRB at high redshift with no prompt emission below ∼20 keV rest frame, or a highly beamed tidal disruption event (TDE) involving an intermediate-mass black hole and a white dwarf with little variability. However, none of the above scenarios can completely explain all observed properties. Although large uncertainties exist, the implied rate of such events is comparable to those of orphan and low-luminosity GRBs as well as rare TDEs, implying the discovery of an untapped regime for a known transient class, or a new type of variable phenomena whose nature remains to be determined., Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society, 467 (4), ISSN:0035-8711, ISSN:1365-2966, ISSN:1365-8711

We investigate light-curve and spectral properties of ultra-stripped core-collapse supernovae. Ultra-stripped supernovae are the explosions of heavily stripped massive stars which lost their envelopes via binary interactions with a compact companion star. They eject only ~ 0.1 Msun and may be the main way to form double neutron-star systems which eventually merge emitting strong gravitational waves. We follow the evolution of an ultra-stripped supernova progenitor until iron core collapse and perform explosive nucleosynthesis calculations. We then synthesize light curves and spectra of ultra-stripped supernovae using the nucleosynthesis results and present their expected properties. Ultra-stripped supernovae synthesize ~ 0.01 Msun of radioactive 56Ni, and their typical peak luminosity is around 1e42 erg/s or -16 mag. Their typical rise time is 5 - 10 days. Comparing synthesized and observed spectra, we find that SN 2005ek, some of the so-called calcium-rich gap transients, and SN 2010X may be related to ultra-stripped supernovae. If these supernovae are actually ultra-stripped supernovae, their event rate is expected to be about 1 per cent of core-collapse supernovae. Comparing the double neutron-star merger rate obtained by future gravitational-wave observations and the ultra-stripped supernova rate obtained by optical transient surveys identified with our synthesized light-curve and spectral models, we will be able to judge whether ultra-stripped supernovae are actually a major contributor to the binary neutron star population and provide constraints on binary stellar evolution., 15 pages, 18 figures, 2 tables, accepted by Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society

We report the discovery of an SN1988Z-like type IIn supernova KISS15s found in a low-mass star-forming galaxy at redshift z=0.038 during the course of the Kiso Supernova Survey (KISS). KISS15s shows long-duration optical continuum and emission line light curves, indicating that KISS15s is powered by a continuous interaction between the expanding ejecta and dense circumstellar medium (CSM). The H$\alpha$ emission line profile can be decomposed into four Gaussians of narrow, intermediate, blue-shifted intermediate, and broad velocity width components, with a full width at half maximum of $\lesssim 100$, $\sim 2,000$, and $\sim 14,000$ km s${}^{-1}$ for the narrow, intermediate, and broad components, respectively. The presence of the blue-shifted intermediate component, of which the line-of-sight velocity relative to the systemic velocity is about $-5,000$ km s${}^{-1}$, suggests that the ejecta-CSM interaction region has an inhomogeneous morphology and anisotropic expansion velocity. We found that KISS15s shows increasing infrared continuum emission, which can be interpreted as hot dust thermal emission of $T \sim 1,200$ K from newly formed dust in a cool, dense shell in the ejecta-CSM interaction region. The progenitor mass-loss rate, inferred from bolometric luminosity, is $\dot{M} \sim 0.4 M_{\odot} \text{yr}^{-1} (v_{w}/40 \text{km}~\text{s}^{-1})$, where $v_{w}$ is the progenitor's stellar wind velocity. After the Big Bang, production of heavy elements in the early Universe takes place starting from the formation of the first stars, their evolution, and explosion. The first supernova explosions have strong dynamical, thermal, and chemical feedback on the formation of subsequent stars and evolution of galaxies. However, the nature of the Universe's first stars and supernova explosions has not been well clarified. The signature of the nucleosynthesis yields of the first stars can be seen in the elemental abundance patterns observed in extremely metal-poor stars. Interestingly, those patterns show some peculiarities relative to the solar abundance pattern, which should provide important clues to understanding the nature of early generations of stars. We thus review the recent results of the nucleosynthesis yields of mainly massive stars for a wide range of stellar masses, metallicities, and explosion energies. We also provide yields tables and examine how those yields are affected by some hydrodynamical effects during supernova explosions, namely, explosion energies from those of hypernovae to faint supernovae, mixing and fallback of processed materials, asphericity, etc. Those parameters in the supernova nucleosynthesis models are constrained from observational data of supernovae and metal-poor stars. Nucleosynthesis yields are then applied to the chemical evolution model of our Galaxy and other types of galaxies to discuss how the chemical enrichment process occurred during evolution.

We show model light curves of superluminous supernova 2006gy on the assumption that the supernova is powered by the collision of supernova ejecta and its dense circumstellar medium. The initial conditions are constructed based on the shock breakout condition, assuming that the circumstellar medium is dense enough to cause the shock breakout within it. We perform a set of numerical light curve calculations by using a one-dimensional multigroup radiation hydrodynamics code STELLA. We succeeded in reproducing the overall features of the early light curve of SN 2006gy with the circumstellar medium whose mass is about 15 Msun (the average mass-loss rate ~ 0.1 Msun/yr). Thus, the progenitor of SN 2006gy is likely a very massive star. The density profile of the circumstellar medium is not well constrained by the light curve modeling only, but our modeling disfavors the circumstellar medium formed by steady mass loss. The ejecta mass is estimated to be comparable to or less than 15 Msun and the explosion energy is expected to be more than 4e51 erg. No 56Ni is required to explain the early light curve. We find that the multidimensional effect, e.g., the Rayleigh-Taylor instability, which is expected to take place in the cool dense shell between the supernova ejecta and the dense circumstellar medium, is important in understanding supernovae powered by the shock interaction. We also show the evolution of the optical and near-infrared model light curves of high-redshift superluminous supernovae. A fading radio source, coincident in time and position with the fast radio burst FRB150418, has been associated with the galaxy WISE J071634.59-190039.2. Subsequent observations of this galaxy have revealed that it contains a persistent, but variable, radio source. We present e-MERLIN, VLBA, and ATCA radio observations and Subaru optical observations of WISE J071634.59-190039.2 and find that the persistent radio source is unresolved and must be compact (, 5 pages, 1 figure, accepted for publication in MNRAS Letters

The properties of the first generation of stars and their supernova (SN) explosions remains unknown due to the lack of their actual observations. Recently many transient surveys are conducted and the feasibility of the detection of supernovae (SNe) of Pop III stars is growing. In this paper we study the multicolor light curves for a number of metal-free core-collapse SN models (25-100 M$_{\odot}$) to provide the indicators for finding and identification of first generation SNe. We use mixing-fallback supernova explosion models which explain the observed abundance patterns of metal poor stars. Numerical calculations of the multicolor light curves are performed using multigroup radiation hydrodynamic code STELLA. The calculated light curves of metal-free SNe are compared with non-zero metallicity models and several observed SNe. We have found that the shock breakout characteristics, the evolution of the photosphere's velocity, the luminosity, the duration and color evolution of the plateau - all the SN phases are helpful to estimate the parameters of SN progenitor: the mass, the radius, the explosion energy and the metallicity. We conclude that the multicolor light curves can be potentially used to identify first generation SNe in the current (Subaru/HSC) and future transient surveys (LSST, JWST). We observed the Cygnus Loop with XMM-Newton (9 pointings) and Suzaku (32 pointings) between 2002 and 2008. The total effective exposure time is 670.2 ks. By using all of the available data, we intended to improve a signal-to-noise ratio of the spectrum. Accordingly, the accumulated spectra obtained by the XIS and the EPIC show some line features around 3 keV that are attributed to the S He$\beta$ and Ar He$\alpha$ lines, respectively. The birth properties of neutron stars yield important information on the still debated physical processes that trigger the explosion and on intrinsic neutron-star physics. These properties include the high space velocities of young neutron stars with average values of several 100 km/s, whose underlying "kick" mechanism is not finally clarified. There are two competing possibilities that could accelerate NSs during their birth: anisotropic ejection of either stellar debris or neutrinos. We here present new evidence from X-ray measurements that chemical elements between silicon and calcium in six young gaseous supernova remnants are preferentially expelled opposite to the direction of neutron star motion. There is no correlation between the kick velocities and magnetic field strengths of these neutron stars. Our results support a hydrodynamic origin of neutron-star kicks connected to asymmetric explosive mass ejection, and they conflict with neutron-star acceleration scenarios that invoke anisotropic neutrino emission caused by particle and nuclear physics in combination with very strong neutron-star magnetic fields., Comment: 24 pages, 12 figures, accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal

We present optical spectroscopic and photometric observations of supernova (SN) 2008D, associated with the luminous X-ray transient 080109, at >300 days after the explosion (nebular phases). We also give flux measurements of emission lines from the H II region at the site of the SN, and estimates of the local metallicity. The brightness of the SN at nebular phases is consistent with the prediction of the explosion models with an ejected 56Ni mass of 0.07 Msun, which explains the light curve at early phases. The [O I] line in the nebular spectrum shows a double-peaked profile while the [Ca II] line does not. The double-peaked [O I] profile strongly indicates that SN 2008D is an aspherical explosion. The profile can be explained by a torus-like distribution of oxygen viewed from near the plane of the torus. We suggest that SN 2008D is a side-viewed, bipolar explosion with a viewing angle of > 50^{\circ} from the polar direction., 6 pages, 7 figures, Accepted for publication in ApJ

Theoretically expected natures of a supernova driven by a wind/jet are discussed. Approximate analytical formulations are derived to clarify basic physical processes involved in the wind/jet-driven explosions, and it is shown that the explosion properties are characterized by the energy injection rate (Edot_iso) and the mass injection rate (Mdot_iso). To explain observations of SN 1998bw associated with Gamma-Ray Burst (GRB) 980425, the following conditions are required: Edot_iso Mdot_iso > ~ 10^{51} erg M_sun s^{-2} and Edot_iso > ~ 2 x 10^{52} erg s^{-1} (if the wind Lorentz factor Gamma_w ~ 1) or Edot_iso > ~ 7 x 10^{52} erg s^{-1} (if Gamma_w >> 1). In SN 1998bw, 56Ni (~ 0.4M_sun) is probably produced in the shocked stellar mantle, not in the wind. The expected natures of SNe, e.g., ejected 56Ni masses and ejecta masses, vary depending on Edot_iso and Mdot_iso. The sequence of the SN properties from high Edot_iso and Mdot_iso to low Edot_iso and Mdot_iso is the following: SN 1998bw-like -- intermediate case -- low mass ejecta (< ~ 1M_sun$) where 56Ni is from the wind -- whole collapse. This diversity may explain the diversity of supernovae associated with GRBs. Our result can be used to constrain natures of the wind/jet, which is linked to the central engine of GRBs, by studying properties of the associated supernovae., 10 pages, 5 figures. Jet-induced supernovae (SNe) have been suggested to occur in gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) and highly-energetic SNe (hypernovae). I investigate hydrodynamical and nucleosynthetic properties of the jet-induced explosion of a population III $40_\odot$ star with a two-dimensional special relativistic hydrodynamical code. The abundance distribution after the explosion and the angular dependence of the yield are obtained for the models with high and low energy deposition rates $\dot{E}_{\rm dep}=120\times10^{51} {\rm ergs s^{-1}}$ and $1.5\times10^{51} {\rm ergs s^{-1}}$. The ejection of Fe-peak products and the fallback of unprocessed materials in the jet-induced SNe account for the abundance patterns of the extremely metal-poor (EMP) stars. It is also found that the peculiar abundance pattern of a Si-deficient metal-poor star HE 1424--0241 is reproduced by the angle-delimited yield for $\theta=30^\circ-35^\circ$ of the model with $\dot{E}_{\rm dep}=120\times10^{51} {\rm ergs s^{-1}}$. Furthermore, I compare the yield of the jet-induced explosion with that of the spherical explosion and confirm the ejection and fallback in the jet-induced explosion is almost equivalent to the "mixing-fallback" in spherical explosions. In contrast to the spherical models, however, the high-entropy environment is realized in the jet-induced explosion and thus [(Sc, Ti, V, Cr, Co, Zn)/Fe] are enhanced. We investigate the evolution of dust that formed at Population III supernova (SN) explosions and its processing through the collisions with the reverse shocks resulting from the interaction of the SN ejecta with the ambient medium. In particular, we investigate the transport of the shocked dust within the SN remnant (SNR), and its effect on the chemical composition, the size distribution, and the total mass of dust surviving in SNR. We find that the evolution of the reverse shock, and hence its effect on the processing of the dust depends on the thickness of the envelope retained by the progenitor star. Furthermore, the transport and survival of the dust grains depend on their initial radius, a_{ini}, and composition: For Type II SNRs expanding into the interstellar medium (ISM) with a density of n_{H,0}=1 cm^{-3}, small grains with a_{ini} < ~ 0.05 micron are completely destroyed by sputtering in the postshock flow, while grains with a_{ini}= 0.05--0.2 micron are trapped into the dense shell behind the forward shock. Very large grains of a_{ini} > ~ 0.2 micron are ejected into the ISM without decreasing their sizes significantly. We find that the total mass fraction of dust that is destroyed by the reverse shock ranges from 0.2 to 1.0, depending on the energy of the explosion and the density of the ambient ISM. The results of our calculations have significant impact on the abundance pattern of subsequent generation of stars that form in the dense shell of primordial SNRs., 35 pages including 10 figures and 5 tables. Long-duration gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) are thought to be connected to luminous and energetic supernovae (SNe), called hypernovae (HNe), resulting from the black-hole (BH) forming collapse of massive stars. For recent nearby GRBs~060505 and 060614, however, the expected SNe have not been detected. The upper limits to the SN brightness are about 100 times fainter than GRB-associated HNe (GRB-HNe), corresponding to the upper limits to the ejected $^{56}$Ni masses of $M({\rm ^{56}Ni})\sim 10^{-3}M_\odot$. SNe with a small amount of $^{56}$Ni ejection are observed as faint Type II SNe. HNe and faint SNe are thought to be responsible for the formation of extremely metal-poor (EMP) stars. In this Letter, a relativistic jet-induced BH forming explosion of the 40 $M_\odot$ star is investigated and hydrodynamic and nucleosynthetic models are presented. These models can explain both GRB-HNe and GRBs without bright SNe in a unified manner. Their connection to EMP stars is also discussed. We suggest that GRBs without bright SNe are likely to synthesize $\Mni\sim 10^{-4}$ to $10^{-3}M_\odot$ or $\sim 10^{-6}M_\odot$., 7 pages, 3 figures. We develop a time-dependent multi-group multidimensional relativistic radiative transfer code, which is required to numerically investigate radiation from relativistic fluids involved in, e.g., gamma-ray bursts and active galactic nuclei. The code is based on the spherical harmonic discrete ordinate method (SHDOM) that evaluates a source function including anisotropic scattering in spherical harmonics and implicitly solves the static radiative transfer equation with a ray tracing in discrete ordinates. We implement treatments of time dependence, multi-frequency bins, Lorentz transformation, and elastic Thomson and inelastic Compton scattering to the publicly available SHDOM code. Our code adopts a mixed frame approach; the source function is evaluated in the comoving frame whereas the radiative transfer equation is solved in the laboratory frame. This implementation is validated with various test problems and comparisons with results of a relativistic Monte Carlo code. These validations confirm that the code correctly calculates intensity and its evolution in the computational domain. The code enables us to obtain an Eddington tensor that relates first and third moments of intensity (energy density and radiation pressure) and is frequently used as a closure relation in radiation hydrodynamics calculations., Comment: 13 pages, 12 figures. Recent studies of core-collapse supernovae have revealed the existence of two distinct classes of massive supernovae (SNe): 1) very energetic SNe (Hypernovae), whose kinetic energy exceeds 10 52 erg , about 10 times the KE of normal core-collapse SNe, and 2) very faint and low energy SNe ( E ≲ 0.5 × 10 51 erg ; Faint supernovae). These two classes of supernovae are likely to be "black-hole-forming" supernovae with rotating or non-rotating black holes. Nucleosynthesis in Hypernovae is characterized by larger abundance ratios (Zn,Co,V,Ti)/Fe and smaller (Mn,Cr)/Fe than normal supernovae, which can explain the observed trend of these ratios in extremely metal-poor stars. Nucleosynthesis in Faint supernovae is characterized by a large amount of fall-back. We show that the abundance pattern of the most Fe-poor star, HE0107-5240, and other extremely metal-poor (EMP) stars are in good accord with those of black-hole-forming supernovae, but not pair-instability supernovae. This suggests that black-hole-forming supernovae made important contributions to the early Galactic (and cosmic) chemical evolution. Finally we discuss the nature of First (Pop III) Stars.

The abundance patterns of extremely metal-poor (EMP) stars provide us with important information on nucleosynthesis in supernovae (SNe) formed in a Pop III or EMP environment, and thus on the nature of the first stars in the Universe. We review nucleosynthesis yields of various types of those SNe, focusing on core-collapse (black-hole-forming) SNe with various progenitor masses, explosion energies (including Hypernovae), and asphericity. We discuss the implications of the observed trends in the abundance ratios among iron-peak elements, and the large C/Fe ratio observed in certain EMP stars with particular attention to recently discovered hyper metal-poor (HMP) stars. We show that the abundance pattern of the HMP stars with [Fe/H] < -5 and other EMP stars are in good accord with those of black-hole-forming supernovae, but not pair-instability supernovae. This suggests that black-hole-forming supernovae made important contributions to the early Galactic (and cosmic) chemical evolution. Natures of very energetic supernovae, i.e., hypernovae, are discussed. They are the explosive deaths of stars more massive than ∼ 20-25M, probably being linked to enigmatic Gamma-Ray Bursts: Optical properties of hypernovae indicate that they are significantly aspherical, while so far no detailed modeling of such an explosion is available. We present light curves and late-phase spectra of aspherical supernova/hypernova models, showing that the optical observations of SNe 1998bw and 2002ap can be well accounted for. The abundance patterns of hypernovae are characterized by large ratios (Zn, Co)/Fe and small ratios (Mn, Cr)/Fe, indicating significant contribution to the early Galactic chemical evolution.

Low-mass population III (PopIII) stars of $\lesssim 0.8 M_{\odot}$ could survive up until the present. Non-detection of low-mass PopIII stars in our Galaxy has already put a stringent constraint on the initial mass function (IMF) of PopIII stars, suggesting that PopIII stars have a top-heavy IMF. On the other hand, some claims that the lack of such stars stems from metal enrichment of their surface by accretion of heavy elements from interstellar medium (ISM). We investigate effects of the stellar wind on the metal accretion onto low-mass PopIII stars because accretion of the local ISM onto the Sun is prevented by the solar wind even for neutrals. The stellar wind and radiation of low-mass PopIII stars are modeled based on knowledge of nearby low-mass stellar systems including our Sun. We find that low-mass PopIII stars traveling across the Galaxy forms the stellar magnetosphere in most of their life. Once the magnetosphere is formed, most of neutral interstellar particles are photoionized before reaching to the stellar surface and are blown away by the wind. Especially, the accretion abundance of iron will be reduced by a factor of $< 10^{-12}$ compared with Bondi-Hoyle-Lyttleton accretion. The metal accretion can enhance iron abundance [Fe/H] only up to $\sim -14$. A rapidly rotating neutron star with strong magnetic fields, called magnetar, is a possible candidate for the central engine of long gamma-ray bursts and hypernovae (HNe). We solve the evolution of a shock wave driven by the wind from magnetar and evaluate the temperature evolution, by which we estimate the amount of $^{56}$Ni that produces a bright emission of HNe. We obtain a constraint on the magnetar parameters, namely the poloidal magnetic field strength ($B_p$) and initial angular velocity ($\Omega_i$), for synthesizing enough $^{56}$Ni mass to explain HNe ($M_{^{56}\mathrm{Ni}}\gtrsim 0.2M_\odot$), i.e. $(B_p/10^{16}~\mathrm{G})^{1/2}(\Omega_i/10^4~\mathrm{rad~s}^{-1})\gtrsim 0.7$., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures; accepted for publication in MNRAS

The most massive stars on the asymptotic giant branch (AGB), so called super-AGB stars, are thought to produce supernovae (SNe) triggered by electron captures in their degenerate O+Ne+Mg cores. Super-AGB stars are expected to have slow winds with high mass-loss rates, so their wind density is high. The explosions of super-AGB stars are therefore presumed to occur in this dense wind. We provide the first synthetic light curves (LCs) for such events by exploding realistic electron-capture supernova (ecSN) progenitors within their super-AGB winds. We find that the early LC, i.e. before the recombination wave reaches the bottom of the H-rich envelope of SN ejecta (the plateau phase), is not affected by the dense wind. However, after the plateau phase, the luminosity remains higher when the super-AGB wind is taken into account. We compare our results to the historical LC of SN 1054, the progenitor of the Crab Nebula, and show that the explosion of an ecSN within an ordinary super-AGB wind can explain the LC features. We conclude that SN 1054 could have been a Type IIn SN without any extra extreme mass loss which was previously suggested to be necessary to account for its early high luminosity. We also show that our LCs match Type IIn SNe with an early plateau phase (`Type IIn-P') and suggest that they are ecSNe within super-AGB winds. Although some ecSNe can be bright in the optical spectral range due to the large progenitor radius, their X-ray luminosity from the interaction does not necessarily get as bright as other Type IIn SNe whose optical luminosities are also powered by the interaction. Thus, we suggest that optically-bright X-ray-faint Type IIn SNe can emerge from ecSNe. Optically-faint Type IIn SNe, such as SN 2008S, can also originate from ecSNe if their H-rich envelope masses are small. We show that the low ratios of $\alpha$ elements (Mg, Si, and Ca) to Fe recently found for a small fraction of extremely metal-poor stars can be naturally explained with the nucleosynthesis yields of core-collapse supernovae, i.e., $13-25M_\odot$ supernovae, or hypernovae. For the case without carbon enhancement, the ejected iron mass is normal, consistent with observed light curves and spectra of nearby supernovae. On the other hand, the carbon enhancement requires much smaller iron production, and the low [$\alpha$/Fe] of carbon enhanced metal-poor stars can also be reproduced with $13-25M_\odot$ faint supernovae or faint hypernovae. An electron-capture supernova (ECSN) is a core-collapse supernova explosion of a super-asymptotic giant branch (SAGB) star with a main-sequence mass MMs ∼ 7 - 9.5M⊙. The explosion takes place in accordance with core bounce and subsequent neutrino heating and is a unique example successfully produced by first-principle simulations. This allows us to derive a first self-consistent multicolor light curves of a core-collapse supernova. Adopting the explosion properties derived by the first-principle simulation, i.e., the low explosion energy of 1.5 × 1050 erg and the small 56Ni mass of 2.5 × 10−3 M⊙, we perform a multigroup radiation hydrodynamics calculation of ECSNe and present multicolor light curves of ECSNe of SAGB stars with various envelope mass and hydrogen abundance. We demonstrate that a shock breakout has peak luminosity of L ∼ 2 × 1044 erg s−1 and can evaporate circumstellar dust up to R ∼ 1017 cm for a case of carbon dust, that plateau luminosity and plateau duration of ECSNe are L ∼ 1042 erg s−1...

The properties of the first generation of stars and their supernova (SN) explosions remain unknown due to the lack of their actual observations. Pop III stars may have been very massive and predicted to be exploded as pair-instability SNe, but the observed metal-poor stars show the abundance patterns which are more consistent with yields of core-collapse SNe. We study the multicolor light curves for a metal-free core-collapse SN models (massive stars of 25-100 solar mass range) to determine the indicators for the detection and identification of first generation SNe. We use mixing-fallback supernova explosion models which explain the observed abundance patterns of metal poor stars. Numerical calculations of the multicolor light curves are performed using the multigroup radiation hydrodynamic code STELLA. The calculated light curves of metal-free SNe are compared with our calculations of non-zero metallicity models and observed SNe.

We demonstrate that a shock breakout has peak luminosity of $L\sim2\times10^{44}$ erg/s and can evaporate circumstellar dust up to $R\sim10^{17}$ cm for a case of carbon dust, that plateau luminosity and plateau duration of ECSNe are $L\sim10^{42}$ erg/s and $t\sim60-100$ days, respectively, and that a plateau is followed by a tail with a luminosity drop by $\sim4$ mag. The ECSN shows a bright and short plateau that is as bright as typical Type II plateau supernovae, and a faint tail that might be influenced by spin-down luminosity of a newborn pulsar. Furthermore, the theoretical models are compared with ECSN candidates: SN 1054 and SN 2008S. We find that SN 1054 shares the characteristics of the ECSNe. For SN 2008S, we find that its faint plateau requires an ECSN model with a significantly low explosion energy of $E\sim10^{48}$ erg., Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures. Recently, thermal radiation from gamma-ray burst (GRB) jets attracts attention as the origin of the GRB prompt emission. In order to treat the thermal radiation from GRB jets properly, both the radiative transfer in the jets and the complicated inner structures of the jets should be taken into account. We developed a numerical code to calculate the radiative transfer in relativistic jets, based on the Monte-Carlo method. The code enables us to calculate the Compton scatterings by energetic electrons as a postprocessing in relativistic media with complicated structures obtained by 2D relativistic hydrodynamical calculations. In this paper, we investigated the influence of the location of the photon injection site on a GRB spectrum of the location. We show that the GRB spectrum has a higher peak energy for the deeper photon injection site.

Although the explosion mechanisms of Gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) and Supernovae (SNe) have been investigated theoretically for a long while, they have not been clarified yet and thus it is required to obtain information from the other point of view. In this presentation, I focus on constraints of the extremely metal-poor (EMP) stars. Since the first metal enrichment in the universe was made by GRBs and/or SNe, the EMP stars, formed in the early universe, preserve the nucleosynthetic features of GRBs and/or SNe in their abundance patterns and thus the abundance patterns of the EMP stars can reveal the explosion properties of GRBs and/or SNe. I present nucleosynthesis in explosions with relativistic jets or non-relativistic mildly aspherical energy deposition, assuming GRBs or SNe, and compare the abundance ratios of their yields with those of the EMP stars. The explosion with non-relativistic mildly aspherical energy deposition can explain [Mg/Fe], [Ca/Fe], and [Zn/Fe] but not [Ti/Fe], while the explosion with relativistic jets can explain [Ca/Fe], [Ti/Fe], and [Zn/Fe] but not [Mg/Fe]. This illustrates that the explosion with relativistic jets or non-relativistic mildly aspherical energy deposition cannot fully reproduce the EMP stars solely and implies that the explosion with relativistic jets and non-relativistic mildly aspherical energy deposition, like GRB-SNe, could explain the abundance ratios of EMP stars simultaneously.
