The epoch of reionization is one of the most exciting frontiers in astrophysics. Here we describe how the combination of galaxy surveys and direct 21-cm measurements of reionization can illuminate numerous mysteries of this fascinating era.

The early phases of galaxy formation constitute one of the most exciting frontiers in astrophysics. It is during this era that the first luminous sources reionize the intergalactic medium - the moment when structure formation affects every baryon in the Universe. Here we argue that we will obtain a complete picture of this era by combining observations of galaxies with direct measurements of the reionization process: the former will provide a detailed understanding of bright sources, while the latter will constrain the (substantial) faint source population. We further describe how optimizing the comparison of these two measurements requires near-infrared galaxy surveys covering large volumes and retaining redshift information and also improvements in 21-cm analysis, moving those experiments into the imaging regime., 9 pages, 3 figures

The cosmic dawn and epoch of reionization mark the time period in the universe when stars, galaxies, and blackhole seeds first formed and the intergalactic medium changed from neutral to an ionized one. Despite substantial progress with multi-wavelength observations, astrophysical process during this time period remain some of the least understood with large uncertainties on our existing models of galaxy, blackhole, and structure formation. This white paper outlines the current state of knowledge and anticipated scientific outcomes with ground and space-based astronomical facilities in the 2020s. We then propose a number of scientific goals and objectives for new facilities in late 2020s to mid 2030s that will lead to definitive measurements of key astrophysical processes in the epoch of reionization and cosmic dawn., Comment: Science White paper submitted to Astro2020 Decadal Survey

Simulations based on ΛCDM cosmology predict thousands of substructures under galactic scale have not been detected in the local universe. One hypothesis proposes that most of these substructures are dark for various astrophysical reasons. Gravitational lensing provides a powerful alternative way to probe dark substructures in distant galaxies by detecting their gravitational perturbations and therefore provides insights into the nature of dark matter. Lensed quasars with certain image configurations are especially promising for probing substructure abundance in lens galaxy halos. When the observed flux ratios of the lensed quasar images deviate from the smooth mass model predictions, these “flux-ratio anomalies” are considered to be the evidence of gravitational perturbations. While the standard analysis of flux-ratio anomalies assumes that substructures are the only cause of anomalies, we found that in two edge-on disk lenses, B1555+375 and B0712+472, their flux anomalies can be explained by including disk components into their mass models. Our results bring up a concern with a potential bias in the previous analyses of flux-ratio anomalies. To further investigate the baryonic effects in flux-ratio anomalies, we create mock quasar lenses by selecting disk and elliptical galaxies in the Illustris simulation. Our analysis shows that baryon-induced flux anomalies can be found in all morphological types of lens galaxies. The baryonic effects increase the probability of finding lenses with strong anomalies by 8% in ellipticals and 10~20% in disk lenses, showing that the baryonic effects are unneglectable in the analysis. As future large-scale surveys are expected to bring numerous lensed quasar samples, further investigations on baryonic effects should be done in order to achieve precise constraints on dark matter in the future.

The existence of mass substructure is an inevitable consequence of the LCDM paradigm. Depite this clear theoretical prediction, a glaring discrepancy with the number of luminous satellites around the Milky Way {MW} has been identified, i.e. the "missing satellite problem". Notwithstanding great progress to address this problem, it remains unsolved. Moreover, the MW could be a biased environment, not representative of the typical universe. Surface brightness aberrations of gravitationally lensed images provide a complementary channel to detect substructure beyond the local Universe in mostly massive early-type galaxies. Simulations suggest a substructure mass fraction of f_sub99% CL. We request 30 orbits with HST WFC3-F390W to accomplish this goal.

Stars and dark matter account for most of the mass of early-type galaxies, but uncertainties in the stellar population and the dark matter profile make it challenging to distinguish between the two components. Nevertheless, precise observations of stellar and dark matter are extremely valuable for testing the many models of structure formation and evolution. We present a measurement of the stellar mass and inner slope of the dark matter halo of a massive early-type galaxy at $z=0.222$. The galaxy is the foreground deflector of the double Einstein ring gravitational lens system SDSSJ0946+1006, also known as the "Jackpot". By combining the tools of lensing and dynamics, we first constrain the mean slope of the total mass density profile ($\rho_{\rm{tot}}\propto r^{-\gamma'}$) within the radius of the outer ring to be $\gamma' = 1.98\pm0.02\pm0.01$. Then we obtain a bulge-halo decomposition, assuming a power-law form for the dark matter halo. Our analysis yields $\gamma_{\rm{DM}} = 1.7\pm0.2$ for the inner slope of the dark matter profile, in agreement with theoretical findings on the distribution of dark matter in ellipticals, and a stellar mass from lensing and dynamics $M_*^{\rm{LD}} = 5.5_{-1.3}^{+0.4}\times10^{11}M_\Sun$. By comparing this measurement with stellar masses inferred from stellar population synthesis fitting we find that a Salpeter IMF provides a good description of the stellar population of the lens while the probability of the IMF being heavier than Chabrier is 95%. Our data suggest that growth by accretion of small systems from a compact red nugget is a plausible formation scenario for this object., Comment: 18 pages, 17 figures. We combine in a self-consistent way the constraints from both gravitational lensing and stellar kinematics to perform a detailed investigation of the internal mass distribution, amount of dark matter, and dynamical structure of the 16 early-type lens galaxies from the Sloan Lens ACS Survey (SLACS Survey), at z = 0.08-0.33, for which both Hubble Space Telescope/Advanced camera for Surveys and NICMOS high-resolution imaging and Very Large Telescope VI-MOS integral-field spectroscopy are available. Based on this data set, we analyse the inner regions of the galaxies, that is, typically within one (three-dimensional) effective radius r(e), under the assumption of axial symmetry and by constructing dynamical models supported by two-integral stellar distribution functions. For all systems, the total mass density distribution is found to be well approximated by a simple power law rho(tot) proportional to m(-gamma)' (with m being the ellipsoidal radius): this profile is on average slightly super-isothermal, with a logarithmic slope = 2.074(-0.041)(+0.043) (errors indicate the 68 per cent confidence interval) and an intrinsic scatter sigma(gamma)' = 0.144-(+0.055)(0.014), and is fairly round, with an average axial ratio = 0.77 +/- 0.04. The lower limit for the dark matter fraction (f(DM)) inside r(e) ranges, in individual systems, from nearly zero to almost a half, with a median value of 12 per cent. By including stellar masses derived from stellar population synthesis models with a Salpeter initial mass function (IMF), we obtain an average f(DM) = 31 per cent, and the corresponding stellar profiles are physically acceptable, with the exception of two cases where they only marginally exceed the total mass profile. f(DM) rises to 61 per cent if, instead, a Chabrier IMF is assumed. For both IMFs, the dark matter fraction increases with the total mass of the galaxy (correlation significant at the 3 sigma level). Based on the intrinsic angular momentum parameter calculated from our models, we find that the galaxies can be divided into two dynamically distinct groups, which are shown to correspond to the usual classes of the (observationally defined) slow and fast rotators. Overall, the SLACS systems are structurally and dynamically very similar to their nearby counterparts, indicating that the inner regions of early-type galaxies have undergone little, if any, evolution since redshift z approximate to 0.35.

We study the internal dynamical structure of the early-type lens galaxy SDSS J0728+3835 at z = 0.206. The analysis is based on two-dimensional kinematic maps extending out to 1.7 effective radii obtained from Keck spectroscopy, on lensing geometry and on stellar mass estimates obtained from multiband Hubble Space Telescope imaging. The data are modelled under the assumptions of axial symmetry supported by a two-integral distribution function, by applying the combined gravitational lensing and stellar dynamics code cauldron and by yielding high-quality constraints for an early-type galaxy at cosmological redshifts. Modelling the total density profile as a power law of the form , we find that it is nearly isothermal (logarithmic slope gamma' = 2.08+0.04(-0.02)) and quite flattened (axial ratio q = 0.60+0.08(-0.03)). The galaxy is mildly anisotropic (delta = 0.08 +/- 0.02) and shows a fair amount of rotational support, in particular towards the outer regions. We determine a dark matter fraction lower limit of 28 per cent within the effective radius. The stellar contribution to the total mass distribution is close to maximal for a Chabrier initial mass function (IMF), whereas for a Salpeter IMF the stellar mass exceeds the total mass within the galaxy inner regions. We find that the combination of a Navarro, Frenk and White dark matter halo with the maximally rescaled luminous profile provides a remarkably good fit to the total mass distribution over a broad radial range. Our results confirm and expand the findings of the Sloan Lens ACS Survey for early-type galaxies of comparable velocity dispersion (Sigma(SDSS) = 214 +/- 11 km s-1). The internal structure of SDSS J0728 is consistent with that of local early-type galaxies of comparable velocity dispersion as measured by the Spectrographic Areal Unit for Research on Optical Nebulae (SAURON) project, suggesting lack of evolution in the past two billion years.

We outline the case for a comprehensive wide and deep survey ultimately targeted at obtaining 21-cm HI line emission spectroscopic observations of more than a billion galaxies to redshift z=1.5 and greater over half the sky. This survey provides a database of galaxy redshifts, HI gas masses, and galaxy rotation curves that would enable a wide range of science, including fundamental cosmology and studies of Dark Energy. This science requires the next generation of radio arrays, which are being designed under the umbrella of the Square Kilometer Array (SKA) project. We present a science roadmap, extending to 2020 and beyond, that would enable this ambitious survey. We also place this survey in the context of other multi-wavelength surveys.

We present the first results of a combined VLT VIMOS integral-field unit and Hubble Space Telescope (HST)/ACS study of the early-type lens galaxy SDSS J2321-097 at z = 0.0819, extending kinematic studies to a look-back time of 1 Gyr. This system, discovered in the Sloan Lens ACS Survey, has been observed as part of a VLT Large Programme with the goal of obtaining two-dimensional stellar kinematics of 17 early-type galaxies to z approximate to 0.35 and Keck spectroscopy of an additional dozen lens systems. Bayesian modelling of both the surface brightness distribution of the lensed source and the two-dimensional measurements of velocity and velocity dispersion has allowed us, under the only assumptions of axisymmetry and a two-integral stellar distribution function (DF) for the lens galaxy, to dissect this galaxy in three dimensions and break the classical mass-anisotropy, mass-sheet and inclination-oblateness degeneracies. Our main results are that the galaxy (i) has a total density profile well described by a single power law p alpha r(-gamma') with gamma' = 2.06(-0.06)(+0.03); (ii) is a very slow rotator (specific stellar angular momentum parameter lambda(R) = 0.075); (iii) shows only mild anisotropy (delta approximate to 0.15); and (iv) has a dark matter contribution of similar to 30 per cent inside the effective radius. Our first results from this large combined imaging and spectroscopic effort with the VLT, Keck and HST show that the structure of massive early-type galaxies beyond the local Universe can now be studied in great detail using the combination of stellar kinematics and gravitational lensing. Extending these studies to look-back times where evolutionary effects become measurable holds great promise for the understanding of formation and evolution of early-type galaxies.

The structure, formation and evolution of early-type galaxies is still largely an open problem in cosmology: how does the Universe evolve from large linear scales dominated by dark matter to the highly non-linear scales of galaxies, where baryons and dark matter both play important, interacting, roles? To understand the complex physical processes involved in their formation scenario, and why they have the tight scaling relations that we observe today {e.g. the Fundamental Plane}, it is critically important not only to undertstand their stellar structure, but also their dark-matter distribution from the smallest to the largest scales.Over the last three years the SLACS collaboration has developed a toolbox to tackle these issues in a unique and encompassing way by combining new non-parametric strong lensing techniques, stellar dynamics, and most recently weak gravitational lensing, with high-quality Hubble Space Telescope imaging and VLT/Keck spectroscopic data of early-type lens systems. This allows us to break degeneracies that are inherent to each of these techniques seperately and probe the mass structure of early-type galaxies from 0.1 to 100 effective radii. The large dynamic range to which lensing is sentive allows us both to probe the clumpy substructure of these galaxies, as well as their low-density outer haloes. These methods have convincingly been demonstrated, by our team, using smaller pilot-samples of SLACS lens systems with HST data.In this proposal, we request observing time with WFPC2 and NICMOS to observe 53 strong lens systems from SLACS, to obtain complete multi-color imaging for each system. This would bring the total number of SLACS lens systems to 87 with completed HST imaging and effectively doubles the known number of galaxy-scale strong lenses. The deep HST images enable us to fully exploit our new techniques, beat down low-number statistics, and probe the structure and evolution of early-type galaxies, not only with a uniform data-set an order of magnitude larger than what is available now, but also with a fully coherent and self-consistent methodological approach!

As part of an ongoing program to test Newton’s law of gravity in the low acceleration regime using globular clusters, we present here new results obtained for NGC 6171. Combining VLT spectra for 107 stars with data from the literature, we were able to trace the velocity dispersion profile up to 16 pc from the cluster center, probing accelerations of gravity down to 3 5 10 9 cm s 2 . The velocity dispersion is found to remain constant at large radii (with an asymptotic values of 2 7 km s 1 ) rather than follow the Keplerian falloff. Similar results were previously found for the globular clusters ω Centauri and M15. We have now studied three clusters and all three have been found to have a flat dispersion profile beyond the radius where their internal acceleration of gravity is a0 1 2 10 8 cm s 2 . Whether this indicates a failure of Newtonian dynamics or some more conventional dynamical effect (e.g., tidal heating) is still unclear. However, the similarities emerging between globular clusters and elliptical galaxies seem to favor the first of the two possibilities.

Recent developments in the spectropolarimetric study of compact objects, specifically black holes (stellar and massive) and neutron stars are reviewed. The lectures are organized around five topics: disks, jets, outflows, neutron stars and black holes. They emphasize physical mechanisms and are intended to bridge the gap between the fundamentals of polarimetry and the phenomenology of observed cosmic sources of polarized radiation, as covered by the other lecturers. There has been considerable recent progress in spectropolarimetry from radio through optical frequencies and this is producing some unique diagnostics of the physical conditions around compact objects. Strong gravitational lenses with measured time delays between the multiple images allow a direct measurement of the time-delay distance to the lens, and thus a measure of cosmological parameters, particularly the Hubble constant, H-0. We present a blind lens model analysis of the quadruply imaged quasar lens HE 0435-1223 using deep Hubble Space Telescope imaging, updated time-delay measurements from the COSmological MOnitoring of GRAvItational Lenses (COSMOGRAIL), a measurement of the velocity dispersion of the lens galaxy based on Keck data, and a characterization of the mass distribution along the line of sight. HE 0435-1223 is the third lens analysed as a part of the H-0 Lenses in COSMOGRAIL's Wellspring (HOLiCOW) project. We account for various sources of systematic uncertainty, including the detailed treatment of nearby perturbers, the parametrization of the galaxy light and mass profile, and the regions used for lens modelling. We constrain the effective time delay distance to be D-Delta t = 2612(191)(+208) Mpc, a precision of 7.6 per cent. From HE 0435-1223 alone, we infer a Hubble constant of H-0 = 73.1(6.0)(+5.7) km s(-1) Mpc(-1) assuming a flat ACDM cosmology. The cosmographic inference based on the three lenses analysed by HOLiCOW to date is presented in a companion paper (HOLiCOW Paper V).
